Divesting at least temporarily from S scale modeling to Radio Control boat restauration recently ;I came across a huge sselection of 'off the shelves' universal joints and driveshafts designed to couple motors and propellers shaftt on R/C motor boats (but also used for R/C trucks and the like).
The item which would best filt most of our S scale locomitives (at least the OMI diesels) is this very part from welll known german R/C leader : RObbe.

It is very well distributed in Europe (germany, france, UK..) and I guess that it can be easily found in north america too.
Main benefits of this really clever part is that
a) it is built in flexible plastic and absorbs most of the vibrations
b) the nuts fitting in both ends come in a variety of standard motor shafts dia. (1.8mm, 2mm, 2.3mm... etc) and allow coupling of different shaft dia. on each end.

Excellent solution, Bill! I have done things like this in the past to eliminate drive shaft slippage, most notably in my ALCO models RS-2. Another technique I have used is to drill out a driveshaft socket for a press fit a 1/16" styrene strip, then drill out the strip for a press fit on the motor shaft. Not quite the skill and finesse you exhibit with your work, but satisfactory in situations where the extreme stresses you mention are not present.
