SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) conducts fundamental research
focusing on climate related problems. The institute closely cooperates with the
University of Hamburg, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) and the GKSS
Research Centre within the Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Climate System
Analysis and Prediction” (CliSAP). The goal is to analyze ongoing and past
changes of the state of the climate system, in response to natural and
human-driven perturbations, to determine predictable elements of the climate
system over a broad range of space and time scales, and to determine
uncertainties intrinsic to predictions of important climate system and
environmental indices.

For the subproject: “Evaluation and improvement of the cloud parameterisation
in an Earth System Model using statistics of ground-based remote sensing
observations and implications for cloud-climate feedbacks” we are seeking a

Scientist / Postdoc (m/f)

The project aims at utilizing high-quality ground-based remote sensing
observations to evaluate and improve advanced cloud process parameterizations
developed for the ECHAM5 GCM, such as the prognostic total water PDF and the
double-moment microphysical scheme.

The successful applicant will be responsible for statistical analysis of
ground-based remote sensing data, development of statistical methods to
evaluate GCM cloud parameterizations with ground-based remote sensing data,
sensitivity studies and implementation of modifications to the GCM cloud
parameterization, as well as contributions to PhD thesis advice and analysis of
field campaign data.

The incumbent is expected to have a Ph.D. in meteorology, geosciences, physics
or related areas. The applicant must have a thorough proven knowledge of
experience with cloud modelling in large-scale models and/or with remote
sensing as well as good skills in programming (Fortran), experience with
advanced data processing and visualization tools, experience in supervising
student’s research projects, and the ability to conduct independent
research. For more information please contact Johannes Quaas
(johannes.qu...@zmaw.de) or Felix Ament (felix.am...@zmaw.de).

The position is offered for 2 years starting 1 September 2009. Payment will be
in accordance with German public service positions (TVöD E13), including
extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including
upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the
Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck
Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and
encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications
receive preferential status.

Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses,
and telephone numbers of two references before 29 June 2009 to:
