SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) conducts fundamental research
focusing on climate related problems. The institute closely cooperates with the
University of Hamburg, the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) and the GKSS
Research Centre within the Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Climate System
Analysis and Prediction” (CliSAP). The goal is to analyze ongoing and past
changes of the state of the climate system, in response to natural and
human-driven perturbations, to determine predictable elements of the climate
system over a broad range of space and time scales, and to determine
uncertainties intrinsic to predictions of important climate system and
environmental indices.

Within the MPI-M department “The Ocean in the Earth System” we are looking for a

Scientist / Postdoc (m/f)

The project aims at a better understanding of the role of meso-scale oceanic
eddies on the sensitivity of the ocean circulation and an assessment of the
impact of these eddies on long-term climate projections. Using the coupled
high-resolution ECHAM5/MPIOM GCM, oceanic eddy fluxes will be analyzed. With
the aid of the analysis result, a stochastic parameterization of eddy fluxes
will be developed and implemented in a coarse resolution version of the
ECHAM5/MPIOM GCM. The impact of oceanic eddies on climate prediction will be
studied by performing climate change integrations with the ECHAM5/MPI-OM model
loaded with the previously derived stochastic parameterization.

We expect an academic degree in one of the above academic subject areas plus
doctoral degree in Oceanography, Meteorology or Physics.

The position is offered for 2 years starting 1 September 2009. Payment will be
in accordance with German public service positions (TVöD E13), including
extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including
upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the
Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female
scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable
qualifications receive preferential status.
