I agree with you Toby, if we're talking about the big picture. But Rita is talking about a list to help people decide which books to buy first, then second, and so on. I'd still think the *priority* of purchase would have to be determined by each individual's needs. If someone was a beginning harper, I'd tell them to first get Alison Kinnaird's tutor. It's a good source for some great tunes...I sure wouldn't send them to the Gesto Collection! But if that someone was an accomplished violinist who wants to start playing dance tunes, Alison's book would be pretty useless and the Gesto might be just the thing. And then was it Ted who pointed out that some folks may want to concentrate on new music, while others are looking for old music? So, no matter what instrument they play, if they're looking for newly composed music I'd put the Scots Musical Museum near the bottom of the list. Despite the fact that the SMM was one of the first collections I bought for my personal library. I think the fact that no one is jumping in here with their prioritized list illustrates that it's just too hard. Not to mention putting ourselves in the position of having our priorities questioned! --Cynthia Cathcart http://www.cynthiacathcart.net/ Posted to Scots-L - The Traditional Scottish Music & Culture List - To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
