[kmail2] [Bug 484327] Bad initial window sizes

2024-03-23 Thread Kevin Krammer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484327

New observation: main window and composer seem to access the same size
information.

I just realized that the observed 760x830 mentioned in the report are the size
of my non-maximized composer window.

To verify I resized the composer to some new shape and then quit Kmail after
closing the composer.
On restart Kmail came up with that new geometry.

If I do not un-maximize the composer and quit Kmail then it restarts in
maximized state.

[kmail2] [Bug 484328] New: Kmail config dialog takes about 40 seconds to show up

2024-03-23 Thread Kevin Krammer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484328

Bug ID: 484328
Summary: Kmail config dialog takes about 40 seconds to show up
Classification: Applications
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 6.0.1
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: config dialog
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kram...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 167655
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=167655=edit
Kmail log entries from journald

SUMMARY

Since upgrade to 6.0 opening the Kmail config dialog for the first time after
startup takes 30-40 seconds, with CPU load spiking.

Most likely related to querying font information because it spams the log with
OpenType messages (see attachment).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start Kmail
2. Settings -> Configure Kmail
3.

OBSERVED RESULT

30-40 seconds of high CPU load before dialog shows up.
log (via journalctl) gets hundreds of entries related to OpenType

EXPECTED RESULT

Config dialog shows up in a couple of seconds.

[kmail2] [Bug 484327] New: Bad initial window sizes

2024-03-23 Thread Kevin Krammer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484327

Bug ID: 484327
   Summary: Bad initial window sizes
Classification: Applications
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 6.0.1
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kram...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

After upgrading to 6.0 the initial size of the Kmail main window, the composer
window and the attachment selection window are not what I would expect them to
be.

When I start Kmail after logging in, it appears in a rather small window, about
760x830.
I had it maximized before ending the session and I can reproduce this even when
just quitting Kmail and restarting it.
So I have to maximize it after every start.

Once maximized, it will open composer windows also maximized (it does not do
that before it got maximized itself)
After manually unmaximizing the composer window (and closing it either by
canceling or sending) any new composer is created in non-maximized form for a
while (have not been able to determine yet when it resets to maximized).

In almost ironic opposition, the dialog for selecting attachments is always
opened with minimal size (screenshot attached).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start Kmail
2. Open composer (new mail or reply, shortcut or toolbar)

OBSERVED RESULT

Kmail main window does not restore its maximized state.
Composer window seems to follow the main windows maximized state.
Attachment dialog is too small.

EXPECTED RESULT

Kmail main window is restored to the size it had when closing.
Composer opens in the size it had last.
Attachment dialog can be used right away without needing to be resized to
actually see files.

[Akonadi] [Bug 482891] New: Kolab resource gone after upgrade to 6.0.0 mega release and not migrated to IMAP either

2024-03-08 Thread Kevin Krammer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=482891

Bug ID: 482891
Summary: Kolab resource gone after upgrade to 6.0.0 mega
release and not migrated to IMAP either
Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
   Product: Akonadi
   Version: 6.0.0
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Kolab Resource
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: kram...@kde.org
CC: c...@carlschwan.eu
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

I've upgraded KDE Neon last weekend and most things went very smoothly.

It seems this release does no longer contain akonadi_kolab_resource but neither
is its config migrated to an IMAP resource.

Had to manually create an IMAP account which lost all folder customizations
(e.g. "contains mailinglist", "use specific identity, etc).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Upgrade to KDE PIM 6.0.0 from 5.x version
2. Start KMail

OBSERVED RESULT

Entry for Kolab account is marked as "offline".
Log has many entries of akonadiserver not being able to contact the resource
/usr/bin/akonadi_kolab_resource does not exist

EXPECTED RESULT

Either akonadi_kolab_resource to run and handle its config or IMAP resource
being in its place.
Ideally with the same collections.

In the worst case some info that the user has to re-create an IMAP "incoming"
configuration manually.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE Neon 6.0.0
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.0 (24.02.0)
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
Qt Version: 6.6.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Annoying side effect of the IMAP resource is that it shows all non-mail folders
such as calendars.
I now have several folders with exactly the same name, just (luckily) in
different locations in the tree.

As far as I can tell this works with either using the MBox folder as the target
mail folder (default) or any other folder (using a filter).

While I myself use the spool file as a folder directly, moving or deleting
mails as needed, one can also set up a filter and treat the spool file more
like a POP3 account.

Just verfied this using a filter with:
* applies to incoming mails
* move to ... and selected a folder in my local maildir
* enable the filter only for the spool account (advanced filter settings)

Also changed the MBox resource's settings to compact on 1 Message

Testing with mailx this is what happens:
* the mail appears in the selected target folder
* the spool file is of zero length

I think what Laurent is says is that the notifications are in the language of
the workspace, since their trigger is not one single application in particular.

Like when you copy files and you get a progress notification, it is always the
same kind of notification no matter if you started the copy in Dolphin or
Konqueror or through kioclient in a terminal.

Similar any program sending a mail, e.g. KOrganizer when sending out event
invitations, will do that through the same service and trigger the same mail
sent notification popup.

I have seen this as well any my workaround is to look at a couple of other

2013-10-17 Thread Kevin Krammer

--- Comment #6 from Kevin Krammer kram...@kde.org ---
The configuration I am concerned about is $HOME and $XDG_DATA_HOME overlapping
but $XDG_DATA_HOME being set.

If $XDG_DATA_HOME is $HOME/data, then the default locations for a couple of
resources would be in $HOME/data, e.g. $HOME/data/local-mails.

On that system/account using data/local-mail relative based on $HOME would be
OK, but is that what the user would assume? Or would the user assume that the
relative paths are based on $XDG_DATA_HOME?

As for test setup: I use identical configurations, just not a copy of Akonadi's
data directory.

While Dan is obviously addressing Akonadi server internals, this is most likely
an issue with most file based resources.

I guess the RID of the top level collection would not only need a relative path
but also information what it is relative to.
Like KConfigGroup replacing the homedir path with $HOME.

The question is what is the most expected behavior if the path is relative to a
sub variable.
I.e. the default maildir resource points to $HOME/.local/share/local-mail but
that in fact is $XDG_DATA_HOME/local-mail and $XDG_DATA_HOME defaults to
$HOME/.local/share if unset.
what should we use as a base then?

This resource is unfortunately very difficult to fix since the plugins have
basically been developed for KOrganizer and sometimes assume certain things
that are not true when being plugged into the resource.

Does over webdavs mean you are using an ics file with an webdavs:// URL?

If so, you could try the standard ical resource instead, it should have support
for remote files and was developed from scratch without any legacy to conform
to

Git commit f7a29b54327876508e834c407173084e0f626252 by Kevin Krammer.

Treat \N as a valid new line sequence in vcard input

The vCard RFC has a note on fields of type text that suggests that
both \n and \N are to be treated as new line sequences:

. The method for specifying CRLF character sequences in text
type values has been changed. The CRLF character sequence in
a text type value is specified with the backslash character
  sequence \n or \N.

[Bug 298254] KAddressbook crashes on reconfiguring IMAP account with new credentials

2012-04-23 Thread Kevin Krammer

Since IMAP is mentioned a couple of times, does this mean this is an
addressbook on an IMAP server?

If so, can you try using the actual Kolab resource instead of the compatibility
resource with the IMAP plugin?

[Bug 298164] Newly created mixedmaildir accounts do not show up

2012-04-15 Thread Kevin Krammer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=298164

--- Comment #1 from Kevin Krammer kram...@kde.org ---
Most likely explanation:
KMail does not show the top level collection because it only has
Collection::mimeType as its contentMimeTypes.
Maybe KMail could always show top level folders of resources that specify
message mime type in their agent data, or maybe even all structural collections
of such resources.
Another option could be to have the top level collection always have all of the
resource's supported MIME types or only MIME types that it doesn't have child
collections for

Since the use case is access to a single vcard file, I'd recommend using the
VCard resource instead.

The KABC resource is intended to be a temporary solution to provide access to
data storage facilities for which there was a KABC plugin but for which no
native new resource exists yet.

For single vcard that is not the case anymore

Is there some confidence that the job doesn't finish before the step 2b is
executed? I _guess_ this is multi-threaded application, and from the
information that the job isn't explicitly started I _think_ it is done by
the session (asynchronously). So it might finish before the signal/slot is
connected, so the slot isn't called.

This is a single threaded application.
The job is started through delayed invocation so all connects have been
executed before that happens

Hmm. Summary says that KOrganizer crashes, but backtrace looks like a crash of
the Akonadi KCal resource like in bug 294485 so this is most likely a duplicate
of that one.

In any case: which plugin do you use with the traditional calendar resource?

How do I tell which plugin I am using? Config file location perhaps?

It is the first selection step in the wizard for creating a traditional KDE
calendar resource.

But you can also determine it from the config file.
In your KDE config directory, look for config files names
akonadi_kcal_resource_Nrc (where N is a number).

check the entry called ResourceType

Can anyone confirm that this still does not work for KMail Folders?

Interesting observation.

I haven't had time yet to try this myself, but my guess is the problem is the
compaction of the source mbox.

Could you check if copying from an mbox to an mbox inside mixedmaildir shows

I think this report mixes a couple of problems, e.g. comment #2 seems to refer
to a problem with the imap resource.

Anyway. I think the main problem has been fixed in 4.7.4 and 4.8, i.e. I could
not reproduce the extremely well done test case in comment #9 (indeed thanks a
lot Marco).

Since I am still seeing the other problem (the one that generates the error
message about missing folder name), I am leaving this report open.

But again I think the problem where it gets stuck has been fixed now. Please
add a new comment if you still get it into that state on 4.7.4 or 4.8

I suppose the agents could not set up change monitoring when Nepomuk is not
running, do a full re-check/re-indexing when the service comes up and stop
monitoring again when it is stopped.

IMHO quite some additional complexity for encouraging the move of 22MB memory
usage from RAM to swap.

converting that to QString and then converting with output codec
resulted in a broken chain conversions.

Now check if output codec is not UTF-8 and then recode vcard output

converter.

Git commit c2ff3d4dc89883773d9cf3cb9fb206520cf22e45 by Kevin Krammer.
Committed on 16/06/2011 at 17:12.
Pushed by krake into branch 'master'.

Fix output encoding for vcard output

KABC::VCardConverter creates UTF-8 encoded output, so implicitly
converting that to QString and then converting with output codec
resulted in a broken chain conversions.

Now check if output codec is not UTF-8 and then recode vcard output
from UTF-8 to QString before passing that to the chosen output
converter.

[Bug 275561] akonadi_mixedmaildir_resource crashes when fetching mail

2011-06-15 Thread Kevin Krammer

--- Comment #5 from Kevin Krammer kevin krammer gmx at 2011-06-15 09:04:47

KMail Folders is a special handler for KMail's potentially mixed mail tree,
i.e. supporting folders in either maildir or mbox format.

The backtrace indicates that there was a problem when dealing with one of the
mbox folders. This folder has either been created as mbox by choice (KMail
allowed to choose the format when creating a new folder) or very old (mbox used
to be the default format way back in the old days).

If your POP3 inbox folder is a top level folder under KMail folders you can
find either a file or a directory with its name in the KMail mail path (e.g.
.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail or $HOME/Mail, etc)

If it is a file, the type is mbox, a directory means maildir

(In reply to comment #6)

I'm currently in the process of shifting everything to the Local Folders
resource. Let's see if this solves the crashes.

Very likely, this is a totally different implementation due to not having to
support mbox subfolders.

Alternatively creating a new subfolder in KMail Folders will also result in a
maildir folder, so doing that for the POP3 inbox folder should also help (since
it is the one getting messages added and removed a lot)

--- Comment #3 from Kevin Krammer kevin krammer gmx at 2011-06-14 21:47:31

(In reply to comment #2)
Maybe the problem is related to filtering. I have several filters that sort
 POP
 mails into folders.

Could you provide some information about the involved folders? Which one is the
MBox? The one which gets the mail from POP at download or the one which is the
filter target?

It seems to me that the crash happens while the messages are being copied.

The crash happens when moving message data in the mbox file due to compacting
it after some message(s) got deleted.

So my guess is that is the folder which the mail got downloaded to orginally
before it gets moved (i.e. the POP3 inbox).

As to the setup change: I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Sure, I just wanted to be sure you know the options.

Depending on your setup, if the POP3 target folder is really the mbox in this
crash, I would actually recommend to make that a maildir.

MBox is by its single file nature very bad for deleting messages. The program
working with the mbox (in this case the resource) needs to remember the
deletion somewhere else and at some point create a new mbox file with all
messages but the delete ones.

In the worst case (first message being deleted) this requires the whole mbox
file to be processed.

Hmm, difficult to tell what actually went wrong since we don't have any
indication which parameters were passed to the memmove() function.

Bertjan: could this be QFile::map() failing?

Juergen: unless you needs this folder to be an MBox file, you could probably
avoid this problem by creating a new folder (which will be a Maildir directory)
and adjusting POP3 account settings to use it as destination.

For IMAP this might be OK, I think the INBOX folder is the actual top level
provided by the IMAP server.

As far as the mixed maildir resource is concerned, the meta data looks correct
(all collection rights, no item rights, just collection MIME type).

Is the create folder action also disabled in Akonadiconsole?

I've tried to reproduce this with the executable shipped on Debian and the one
I built from master.
Also tried running the excutable from Debian (KDEPIM 4.4.10 I think) with newer
KDE.

All tests so far worked.

Since both backtraces indicate a problem when writing the results to output, it
is probably dependent on some data in one of your address book entries.

Maybe one of you has time to try finding the problematic entry using
kabcclient -S name

This is almost certainly related to the encoding problem, so it is most likely
an entry with any field containing non ASCII characters.

 Hej Marco,

BDAY:1900-5-19 is simply _invalid_ according to the RFC (2426/2425), so I see
no point in supporting broken vCards. Please inform the creator of the
 software
which creates such broken vCards so that he will fix his product.

It is very likely that the broken vcards come from a highly proprietary
product. Only those do not care about implementing standards correctly.

Since it seems to we have a not to complex way to fix these vcards on reading
(if I understand John's comment correctly), we should consider this at least
for import vcards

That could be a problem with the resource's use of KWallet.

Maybe KWallet is denying access by the resource or it is disabled for that user
account.

kwalletmanager is usually available in the system tray area of the main panel
to check either possibility.

Do any other applications use the wallet successfully? E.g. KMail or Kopete for
account passwords?

It appeared on every start of KMail unless something else had started Akonadi
before.

And it was a very stupid bug indeed.

Fortunately the fix is part of the recently released (April 30th) 4.4.5
version.

SVN commit 1135440 by krake:

If the AgentManager instance is created before Akonadi is running, its D-Bus
interface is not valid yet.
However, it never becomes valid afterwards, so it never knows any types or
instances, even if they are available.

This lead to ServerManager believing that Akonadi did not start correctly,
letting it run into the safety timeout and producing a self test log.
Unfortunately this self test log then contains wrong information (no resource
agents found)

The observed behavior suggests that Akonadi is actually starting correctly but
KMail, or rather code in libakonadi-kde used by KMail, is not detecting this
correctly.

After several attempts to get to the cause of the problem or at least find a
way to improve the situation, I might have found at least a partial fix.

Partial in the sense that I haven't tested it a lot yet, but it seems to always
work for me (using a patched Debian package so the olther components are
exactly as before).

Now working on a cleaned up version of the patch for a review request

Does this happen right away?

Because I have a weird behavior here:
KMail starts and nothing bad happens (probably its not doing anything yet)
I then check Akonadi's status on the console using
akonadictl start

Akonadi is running nicely. Just to be sure I run akonadiconsole and even all
agents are running as expected.

Then, I guess this is when KMail starts actually downloading mails, I get the
self test log.

Can anyone else confirm this?
You might have to deactivate (check Mail on startup)

KMail's mail directory is now handled by a Mixed maildir resource, which
understands maildir and mbox folders within each other.

It also has read-only access to the index files generated by KMail, so it can
read flags and tags stored there.

Flags are then stored in Akonadi as metadata to the message item object, tags
are imported to Nepomuk and message objects are associated with these tags
accordingly.

When being used with the migration tool that the new KMail starts on first
invokation, tag information such as color are added to the respective tag in
Nepomuk.

Maybe we could change this bugreport to be a wish for having some of the
different panes in dockers of some sort, i.e. movable.

By default it could be all three in one row but allow users to e.g. move the
collection tree above or below the contact list.

In case you mean that the KABC resource is working on a local vcf file, try

Well, if I (the developer) can't reproduce it, I have no way to fix it...

 simply not true

Unfortunately it is. With no way of reproducing a problem there is no way of
checking whether a change fixes the problem or even improves the situation.

Under some circumstances it might be possible to guess what the problem could
be, create a patch for that, have the user build the software with the patch
applied and check whether it works and repeat whether it doesn't.

It is therefore usually more viable to determine whether there is a different
solution to the actual goal, in this case using the specialized VCard resource.

The compatibility resource is actually just a temporary mechanism that will be
removed once all backends are supported natively, i.e. by respective
specialized Akonadi resources.

Maybe it would make sense to have some kind of blacklisting where plugins that
provide functionality which is already available natively are no longer shown
in the plugin selection dialog, thus avoiding them being used instead of the
respective native resource.

This might need some changes on the forum side as well, i.e. machine

Adding a bit more context.

Kontact and the other KDE PIM applications are released together with other KDE
applications whenever there is a KDE release.

So your wish item could have also been closed as RESOLVED FIXED because it
has already been that way.

If a distribution update somehow managed to remove Kontact or install an
incompatible version, it could have been a problem with the packages or with
the package manager. In both these cases something the distributor has to look
into.

Need to handle clear() in the type specific subclass because distribution list

During clear those need to be handled as internal changes and must not be
