[nysbirds-l] Midtown Birding

2012-06-12 Thread Alan Drogin
Could it be like last winter, Bryant Park is keeping the migrants around as
much as the tourists? And so too us birders. Matthew helped me locate the
female Wilsons on Monday along the bushes south of the lawn. That area proved
to be rewarding, besides the summer resident Ovenbird, Common Yellow-throats
and the year-round Catbirds and occasional White-throated Sparrows, I spotted a
Wood Thrush and Matthew and I saw a Brown Thrasher fly across the lawn.
Tuesday morning before the rain, I finally caught the first-year "Mourning",
despite the strong eye-ring, darting and hopping very unlike a Connecticut (and
making it very difficult to check out the undertail covert). Matthew caught
the Wilsons again and I was surprised to still spot a Northern Waterthrush.
Could this little park keep us birding year-round?

Happy Birding,
Alan Drogin

Re: [nysbirds-l] bands on female kite?

2012-06-12 Thread Ardith Bondi

I noticed the appearance in that post of the left bird's legs, as well.
I believe it is a photographic artifact, given the light conditions and
the apparent crop and lightening of the image.

This is the only photo I've posted of the birds, and their legs look
pretty normal to me. http://www.ardithbondi.com/slideshow55.html#20

looks more closely at pictures and sees different.

Although I am not advocating this as an explanation here, it is worth
remembering that nesting Mississippi Kites will tolerate a 'helper',
usually a subadult. Multiple observers stated that the pair that nested
in Root (Montgomery Co) were joined at times by a third bird. Apparently
this cooperative behavior is especially common at the northern edges of
the range were conditions may not be optimal.

NYSARC has received a couple of reports on the kites but I would have
expected (hoped for) a few more considering the hundreds of people
who've been to see them so far. The next stage in documentation will be
to obtain evidence of egg laying, chicks etc.

One last thing, looking at the picture sent by Steve Sachs (BTW a no-no
on this list), I was struck by how thin the legs look on the left hand
bird (female?) compared to the right hand bird. Is this due to the angle
or a genuine difference?

Or perhaps they didn't actually see a band (which would also be more likely
than "bands" plural) on the female.

re:[nysbirds-l] banded kite

2012-06-12 Thread Spsdmd

having been to sterling forest to photograph the kites on at least 8 different
days so far (my office is only 15 min. away from the site), my guess is that
someone mistakenly saw the white leg feathers and orange leg skin color and
thought there were white/orange bands. these 2 birds are the same birds each
time i have been there. the female has some fairly distinctive white patches on
her back. their behavior in terms of where they perch and bring nesting
material is consistent each day. and having established this area as their
territory, i am sure they would not tolerate any other raptors around. twice i
have seen them chase out bald eagles that have drifted into the area. if
someone has photos of a banded female, then i stand corrected

re:[nysbirds-l] banded kite

Re: [nysbirds-l] bands on female kite?

2012-06-12 Thread Scott Haber
Or perhaps they didn't actually see a band (which would also be more likely
than bands plural) on the female.

Is it at all possible that there are two pairs of kites? Someone saw

Re: [nysbirds-l] bands on female kite?

2012-06-12 Thread Angus Wilson
I agree with Ardith and others that the onus now is on finding photos that
definitively show a band - after all, these must already be some of the
most photographed Mississippi Kites in history! Usually it's the other way
around, birds are reported as being unbanded until someone looks more
closely at pictures and sees different.

Although I am not advocating this as an explanation here, it is worth
remembering that nesting Mississippi Kites will tolerate a 'helper',
usually a subadult. Multiple observers stated that the pair that nested in
Root (Montgomery Co) were joined at times by a third bird. Apparently this
cooperative behavior is especially common at the northern edges of the
range were conditions may not be optimal.

NYSARC has received a couple of reports on the kites but I would have
expected (hoped for) a few more considering the hundreds of people who've
been to see them so far. The next stage in documentation will be to obtain
evidence of egg laying, chicks etc.

One last thing, looking at the picture sent by Steve Sachs (BTW a no-no on
this list), I was struck by how thin the legs look on the left hand bird
(female?) compared to the right hand bird. Is this due to the angle or a
genuine difference?

Cheers, Angus Wilson

Re: [nysbirds-l] bands on female kite?

2012-06-12 Thread Ardith Bondi

I noticed the appearance in that post of the left bird's legs, as well.
I believe it is a photographic artifact, given the light conditions and
the apparent crop and lightening of the image.

This is the only photo I've posted of the birds, and their legs look
pretty normal to me. http://www.ardithbondi.com/slideshow55.html#20
