Re: Buffer to XML problem
Once loaded into a .net string, it is Unicode. So then the encoding stated in the Xml preamble (UTF-8) is then wrong. By passing a stream to the XmlDocument (directly, or via XmlTextReader(stream)) then the Encoding associated with the stream (which is sniffed from the BOM) is passed as well. If they match, much happiness. A related point (and what Jano said) is by passing via a Stream surely the BOM is consumed to detect the encoding, and as a result is not passed to the reader? Either way, the moral is to avoid loading Xml from System.Strings. From: Greg Keogh Sent: Friday, January 31, 2014 5:09 AM To: ozDotNet Folks, I can't convert to byte buffer to an XML document. The input buffer contains a serialized string with a UTF8 BOM which starts like this: EFBBBF3C3F786D6C2076657273696F6E3D22312E302220656E636F64696E673D227574662D38223F3E0D0A3C5573 [cut] . . . ? x m l v e r s i o n = 1 . 0e n c o d i n g = u t f - 8 ? . . U s So I do this: string xml = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(buffer); var doc = XDocument.Parse(xml); However the Parse dies with System.Xml.XmlException : Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1. What am I missing here? Greg K

Re: Buffer to XML problem
Once loaded into a .net string, it is Unicode. [cut] That's the rub, but it's so obvious you can forget it. The problem exists in the reverse direction because you will see countless people in web searches asking why is my saved XML coming out as UTF-16?. It turns out they're using a StringWriter or similar. Either way, the moral is to avoid loading Xml from System.Strings. I know you most often get X-DOM objects out of files or streams, but sometimes you have to make them from strings. I'm getting raw xml strings back from a native DLL. Although my BOM crash was caused by me doing something wrong inside a faulty WEB API media formatter (which I decided I didn't need anyway). Greg K

RE: Today was very quiet on ozdotnet ...
The 4% seems remarkably low – according to MSFT’s last annual report 65% of the Windows BG’s revenue comes from OEMs, and assuming 50% of that is destined for consumers, that’s already $6bn (out of $78bn). Add in revenue from Entertainment GB (Xbox etc.), plus, some dribs and drabs from other groups (part of Office would be consumers as well), I’m guessing it’s probably around 20% That all said, I don’t think David’s conclusion is incorrect. Microsoft’s an incredibly diversified operation. It also has significant tentacles embedded into larger organisations, where the cost of migration is large. Additionally, it’s ramping up significantly in areas that Anthony identified as “the future” (e.g. cloud-based products/services) Cheers Ken From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Nathan Chere Sent: Thursday, 6 February 2014 9:44 AM To: ozDotNet Subject: RE: Today was very quiet on ozdotnet ... I read about 8-10 “IT press” articles about Nadella yesterday, and a few are looking for the controversy – usual for any media reporting, I suppose. Additionally, it’s ramping up significantly in areas that Anthony identified as “the future” (e.g. cloud-based products/services) As I read it, Nadella’s roles over the past few years have been achieving exactly that. To use the acronyms - PaaS, IaaS and SaaS. Equally interesting is his emphasis (in all the snippets of interviews that I have seen) on devices. Scott, you're so burnt and twisted man. You need to see someone. Got a good therapist or is that why we are here? ;) Perhaps Microsoft can organise something with those two, similar to how Apple did.
