Hello Peter!

PG I'm probably stupid but I didn't figure out how to send messages using
PG S/MIME.

MM Did you fail to encrypt your message or to sign it?

PG I got certificate and tried to import it to TB! but the Access
PG violation error appeared. So I cannot install the certificate in the
PG system.

   What certificate format did you use?

Hello Nick!

NA I am including a small jpeg image of what Outlook shows when clicking on
NA the S/MIME signature, as I think it much more informative than what TB!
NA shows you. I am also including a jpeg image of TB!'s version of the same
NA for comparison purposes.

NA I wonder if it would be too difficult to change TB!'s to something more
NA along the lines of Outlook's?

  At a time or release, user interface of S/MIME will definitely be

Re[2]: RC/3i - hangs

2001-06-10 Thread Maxim Masiutin

Hello A!

NA Max, it seems that while the Program Files are being copied over, it
NA calls thebat.exe at the same time... causing the hang, because if
NA you kill one process, TB is already running.

ACM I did notice that the installation process started TB! automatically. This
ACM happened without the 'standard' prompt that the installation is complete
ACM and the question of whether or not the user wishes to load the newly
ACM installed application upon closing the installation dialog.

  Does it hangs after displaying the licence, readme, prompting
  destination directory and finishing copying the files? Does this
  hang only occur under Win9598?

Re: S/MIME double headers assumption

MG I made a few tests with Günther Eisele and we have come to the
MG conclusion that the Bat also encrypts the headers of S/MIME mails. We
MG observed that once an encrypted message is decrypted certain headers

MG generates before sending out a message.

  This did only occur if the compression in S/MIME was turned on.

  As about integration with Kaspersky AV, some components should be

  As about .bav-files, we are also working on the specification. As
  soon as it will be released, third-party developers will be able to

Hello Marck!

 The Address auto-view always on top option isn't optional. No
 matter what the setting, the window is always on top.

 Currently, the always on top in the address auto-view and memo view
 is the global option. It affects how are these windows are ordered
 among windows of other applications. Within The Bat!, these windows
 are always on top, because these windows are tool-tip windows, and
 they work like floating toolbar windows which are also always on top
 as well. I guess the behaviour was the same in 1.53.

 I don't know how to determine it because the log file gives no note if

  If you speak about Beta/22, the only TLS configuration controls were
  available, no TLS itself. Whichever TLS settings has been
  configured, they've been ignored. If you have suggestions on the TLS

Re[2]: The Bat! - bug report : Common folders not included

2002-01-06 Thread Maxim Masiutin

Hello Krzysztof!

 The command 'Folder | Kill dupes in all folders' does not kill
 duplicate messages in common folders.

KK This bug is still present in beta 25

  Right, beta 25 did only fix TLS, nothing more.

Hello Peter!

PP So I'd not know what to configure ... TB! default Secure-SMTP-Port
PP suggestion is 4433, what is an absolutely unknown port number to
PP me. My SSL-SMTP implementation suggestions for Linux all suggest
PP port 465 for this (without special reasons, it's just what is
PP written in default/example configurations) and even this was
PP unknown to me before.

  OK, let 465 be the default port for SMTP-TLS, not 4433.

Re: Beta 41 - NT FIX.. OK!

2002-02-20 Thread Maxim Masiutin

Hi Graham,

On Tue, 19 Feb 2002, at 22:35:07 [GMT +] (which was 0:35 where I
live) in msgid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] you wrote:

 Do tell..

  In Beta/40, the bas was loading a DLL for NTML (MSN) authentication
  at startup. The DLL file name is secur32.dll. Under NT4, this DLL is
  called security.dll, and the error was caused by the absence of
  secur32.dll.

  In Beta/41, the DLL isn't been loaded at startup, but only when
  needed, directly before the NTLM authentication.

  In Beta/42, The Bat! will gracefully handle the absence of
  secur32.dll. It will first try to load secur32.dll, and, in case of
  absence, it will try to load security.dll. Even in case of absence
  of security.dll, the MSN authentication will just fail, but the
  program won't give an exception.

 As you can see it all works now.. (and quickly too!)

  Thank you very much for the good news! Did anyone estimate the
  speed difference between the recent beta, Beta/39 and 1.53, for
  example? The difference should be noticeable when entering large
  folders, with five thousand messages or more. On network drives, the
  difference should be even more sufficient.

Re: Unproportional horizontal scrollbars

2002-02-23 Thread Maxim Masiutin

Hello Marek!

 The grapic control in folder tree, messages list, address list is
 called grid. Unlike rows, columns in the grids have different
 width. The horizontal scroller scrolls by rows, not by pixels, which
 makes this bug not fixable.

 In Shortcuts Editor is no column and horizontal scroll bar is
 unproportional. Why?

   There is also the grid with two columns: Action and HotKey.

MSI Installation

2004-06-11 Thread Maxim Masiutin
Hello Peter,

MMWe've compiled an MSI Installation (experimental), it is
MM available in the Beta Download Area.

It seems to work ok here, but as I'm a single user on a single
computer, the advantages don't apply to me, or do they?

The advantage is that the MSI file is digitally signed and you can verify the
signature before installing the program to ensure that the contents haven't been
infected in transit by a virus or a mailicious user.

Another andantage is that MSI uninstalls absolutely everything it has installed. So
The Bat! folder under the Program Files will be accurately cleaned after the
uninstallation.

We have also implemented a smarter algorithm to clean the Working Directory.
Previously, the uninstaller did merely delete the Working Directory with all its
subdirectories. If the user had configured C:\ as a working directory, he/she has
been lost after the program data removal because the uninstaller did delete
everyithing on disk C. Now the uninstaller distinguishes between account
configuration, message base, address books, and other files which are not of The Bat!

I like the idea of rogue smiles (but didn't submit my rogue yet)!! :-)

I would suggest the limitation on size for the smily image file of 7KB or 10KB, and

There is no rationale for the JPEG image of 64x86 pixels to be 39058 bytes.

RA improvements because of this.

Which plugins exactly are you speaking about?

1. Send me an empty email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject S/MIME Broken?
2. I will reply with a signed message
3. You will import my certificate and send me an encrypted message
4. I will try to figure out what's wrong.

You have turned on Compress data before encryption which is off by default. It
conforms to rfc3274, but is not yet supported by a majority of S/MIME clients. The
help file has a note about it.

Should we give an additional warning message box if the user turns on this option?

Friendly Forums

2004-09-21 Thread Maxim Masiutin
*** cross-posted to TBUDL

We have created friendly, easy-to use resource for the beginners and the occasional
visitors to familiarize with some specific topics related to The Bat!. This resource
is presented as web-based forums at the www.ritlabs.com website:

English: http://www.ritlabs.com/en/forum/
German: http://www.ritlabs.com/de/forum/
Russian: http://www.ritlabs.com/ru/forum/

These forums arent intended for discussing bugs, drawbacks in the implementation,
problems, etc. It is just a friendly resource to show the users what The Bat! can do.

The main difference between these new forums and the already established ones
(http://www.batboard.de/, http://www.nobat.ru/, TBUDL, etc.) is that there will be no
bug reports at the forums at www.ritlabs.com. The moderators have an opportunity to
move a message from the forum to the technical support database. So if a user will
suddenly submit a bug report or a negative message, the moderator will either move it
to the technical support database or will delete it from the forum if this message
does not require support. This way we accomplish friendliness. There is no such strict
moderation at the already established forums (http://www.batboard.de/,
http://www.nobat.ru/, TBUDL, etc.) and the users can freely communicate there.

Marck Pearlstone, Peter Palmreuther, Roelof Otten and Peter Meyns made a step forward
and agreed to be the moderators of these forums.

Marck Pearlstone did create the English descriptions for the forums, and Peter
Palmreuther did create the German. If you have suggestions to improve these
descriptions, please contact them.

  If during the installation you see that a particular feature occupies 0 KB or an

batskin.ini file format

2004-10-25 Thread Maxim Masiutin
.

GlyphID = BitmapID,Column,Row[,[OffsetX][,[OffsetY]]]
defines one glyph for this glyph set. the program scans each glyph set for a
specific program-defined name, case insensitively. custom names may be defined,
but will be not used. and vice versa - if programs tries to find a name which does
not exists, no drawing would be performed for this name.
BitmapID the code of loaded bitmap ([bitmaps] section) which contains this
glyph.
Column, Row grid cell position, starting with 0 (first row / first column is 0,0)
OffsetX, OffsetY offset position of this only glyph by specified pixels.
  defaults to 0 or fixup-specified numbers.
  (good aligned glyphs do not require these)

Example:
[my_workicons]
Options=0,3,4
Cookies=0,12,4
...
fixup=32,32,16,16
Memo=1,14,4
Chat=1,18,8
...
Templates=1,5,4,15,10
AddrBook=1,0,4,,11

add glyphs to my_workicons glyph set.
assuming, my_workicons is a 16x16 glyph set:
Options is taken from bitmap with code 0, fourth column, fifth row, no additional
offset. Cookies is taken from the same bitmap, respective col,row to 12,4.
fixup follows, which makes virtual grid 32x32, and icons are taken from 16,16 in
each cell. Memo is placed in a bitmap with code 1 at column/row - 14,4.
Templates is taken from bitmap 1, row/column 5/4, but moved to 15,10 inside grid
cell. AddrBook is only moved to 11 in the cell.

the file may contain any amount of comments - any text after semicolon (;) is
ignored until the end of line.

the batskin.ini story still evolves, since GUI customization is a work in progress
and these two things are closely related. that's why I feel reluctantly to post
batskin.ini documentation officially, to avoid versioning hell.
it is possible, that .ini will be mutated into a more TheBat! general format soon.
and glyph ids (names) could became not program-dependent, but GUI definition file
dependent.
however, the principle it is built upon, will not be changed and very easy porting
will be
possible, with few lines changed in the file.
so, batskin.ini creation is welcomed, anyway!

Related Notes:
 when program loads bitmaps, it makes necessary image crops, if specified, to save
 memory usage, which could be huge. small png files having large unused space could
 be small due to good compression, but after they load they may consume many
 megabytes of RAM.
 glyphs are drawn directly from source bitmaps, no duplications are made, the file
 mostly defines where to draw from each specified glyph.

Regarding Missing NFS Icons problem:
For those, who may want to add those few missing icons, a file batskin.ini could be
supplied along with a missing icons only additional file (3 files altogether)

[bitmaps]
Bitmap0=glyphs.bmp
Bitmap1=GlyphBMP-patch.png

filter-related part of glyphs should look like:

; filters in a separate file
fixup=24,24,0,0
bLeft=1,0,0
bDown=1,1,0
bUp=1,2,0
bRight=1,3,0
bNewFilter=1,4,0

  if icons follow in the same order in the GlyphBMP-patch.png

of course, GlyphBMP-patch.png may be named gbpatch.png, be of type .bmp (file
extension must be changed accordingly!) or .jpg, as you want.

 batskin.ini -  ,

GUI - Options/Preferences.

There is no menu to switch it. Only when doing a clean install (when not The
Bat! entry is in the Registry), you can select the encryption node.

This is quite right that that The Bat! didn't ask you about the encryption, you
did already have an installed instance of the program.

From what I've seen in Maxim's note (cited by you) I'd say this is a
little bit useless at the moment since no MSI installer has been
published, yet ...

The MSI installer just saves the user from the question whether it is Home or
Professional edition.

If you simply run this EXE, it will ask the user what edition it is.

I'd really like to see an option later on to enable message base
encryption without having to do a clean install.

What will happen with the old (unencrypted) data if you enable encryption?

If this isn't possible just encrypt the complete message base.

Save old message base unencrypted and only encrypt message base from now on
might have been possible, but not secure.

If you switch between encrypted and unencrypted mode, how would we deal with
the attachements that are kept in a separate directory? In encrypted mode,
attachments aren't stored separately. This is needed to protect the attachments.

You need to delete The Bat! registry branch before running this beta.
