Re: [9fans] Strange 'uintptr' behavior

2022-01-24 Thread Pavel Klinkovský
Sorry, I was not precise enough.
I prepared arrays in the initiated data segment:

This program cannot be compiled:

#include
#include

uintptr frst[] = {nil, nil, nil, nil, nil};
uintptr scnd[] = {nil, nil, frst, [1]};

void main(void) {
exits(nil);
}

...because of:

cpu% 5c t.c
t.c:5 initializer is not a constant: scnd

This program can be compiled:

#include
#include

void* frst[] = {nil, nil, nil, nil, nil};
void* scnd[] = {nil, nil, frst, [1]};

void main(void) {
exits(nil);
}

Perhaps when you said, quote, "I think you are not bipolar, you are just
another piece of Mr. Hankey.”

That is an instance that comes to mind. You literally telling a kind, creative
person who is manages his own mental health/neurodivergence (and is open about
it), that is he not in fact bipolar, but is instead a talking piece of faeces.

I think we have a kinder space than that here, rather, I think we *should* have
a kinder space than this.

Insulting people... First this moron that is polluting the mailing

time when you'll try to search the archives.

Then this person starts with this social justice hunting crap,
attributing political views to a plan9 contributor because "maybe
I have heard secondhand..." and then trying to censor his book
"[...]support oppression[...]", the most complete introductory book
to plan9 (language faults apart) that exists nowadays. For those
who don't know, he wrote also an extensive commentary to the Plan
9 source code following John Lions' style, there is nothing like
that anywhere else.

And now he is a victim.

And all the trolling around... give me a break.

I don't know J. Ballesteros. I don't know what are his political
views. I don't bloody care. This is not a twitter morons'
group.

Just for curiosity, in what thread people has been harassed here

add to the list social champion?

A decade ago this list was still a pleasant space, with the typical
well known trolls vomiting now and then, yes, but still full of
knowledge and good spirits.

I don't think there is a point to be subscribed to what is left of
9fans anymore.

Sorry Rux Cox, last reply.

contrary to your claims, mycroftiv has always stood by his opinions
(which often differed from mine) and always backed everything up with
good reason. his reasoning is actually sound.

mycroftiv has been keeping on dialog for a long time, for everybody
who was actually interested.

he is also presenting this opinion in some rare emails to bigger
public like 9fans. i think this is meant to be an invitation for
further discourse, as it's never quite overwhelming, not like the
constant flooding of shitty bots on this list.

it's also quite believable that he is *overly* concerned about the
reaction on here, which might make it very hard to say anything at all

of our very unalike personalities i seem to relate, much better than

maybe what you (cowardly) are trying to express is that mycroftiv is a

*trickery* in his arguments. not much *playing around* with people.

Hi mycroftiv!

I'd be happy to lend some support and at least match your bounty. There's a
lot to explore in the 9 universe beyond what has been covered so far, and I
think the work you've done with ants and grid has been fantastic - and
shows your dedication to growing the ecosystem and welcoming new people.

For those who haven't, I'd recommend trying out the grid. It's connectable
from any 9 system, instructions are here:
http://wiki.9gridchan.org/Connecting/index.html
For those who would like to check out the grid's discussion but run linux
like myself, Sigrid created a client '9gc' that's able to access the
gridchat. It's here: https://git.sr.ht/~ft/9pro

I've found the community to be welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable - and,
unlike my lurker self, very active.

Thank you mycroftiv,

Re: [9fans] Sponsoring a new Intro book by the Flan 9 Poundation

2022-01-24 Thread Keith Gibbs
Oh no. Someone doesn’t like Intro to OS abstractions! Someone on the internet
has an opinion about someone that you may not agree with!

*clutches pearls* *swoons*

You are an adult, right? You can understand people have different opinions and
motivations. He and others don’t like Mr. Ballesteros’ position. Others happy
to “death of the author” 9intro and appreciate the work as a text. Others don’t
care.

Even if you don’t agree with his motivations, I think we do need efforts for
additional documentation, monograph-length books, and introductory material.
We, as a point of fact, have a diverse community.

Whether is it specifically about ANTS [which is a very cool project, but
perhaps a more limited circle than necessary], documentation and enabling new
people to discover and graduate CS students to continue working on projects
exploring the Plan 9 system is kind of a good thing. We don’t just need one
book. We can have lots of books.

maybe a more recent book could be a community effort at least a bit, I
would be interested in contributing to such a project.

as for nemo... I have no idea who he is really, but that book is pretty
good, although very specific to the setup in his lab

Re: [9fans] Sponsoring a new Intro book by the Flan 9 Poundation

2022-01-24 Thread Keith Gibbs
+1

Instead of responding to an idea that would potentially benefit the whole of
the community, several people got *personally offended* about the fact that the
original author wanted to make sure that the effort was inclusive [as there
*are* LGBTQ+, differently abled, and neurodivergent developers in this
community].

Mr. Babic: “Snowflake" has long changed from being a reference to the
stereotype of over-sensitive liberals, but has become more apropos for
conservative types who lose their mind and become verbally abusive [“garbage”,
“Fuck you”, “9f*gs”], because there is even the most casual reference to
non-heterosexual, non-cisgendered people *existing*. Which they do, by the way.
Including in this mailing list.

If that cannot be countenanced without abuse, I guess you and Mr. Normandin are
in the wrong place. I take personal offence to mycroftiv being called
“garbage”, as he is a demonstrably valuable member of the Plan 9 community.

Re: [9fans] Sponsoring a new Intro book by the Flan 9 Poundation

2022-01-24 Thread Lucas Francesco
khm is absolutely right, some of you are entirely missing the point.
If you REALLY want 9fans to be about "no politics" y'all shall
discuss what should be done or should be avoided in a new book, what
other books got wrong and maybe if theres something to save about the
one op is paying to substitute, maybe then you'll stop being a
dretiment noise on the ML and help the next introduction of a nice
book.

this "no politics discussion" is bullshit btw, 9fans has always been a
politics mess, plan9-adjacent communities conflicting, some not
getting the respect they deserve and whatnot

I don't care if some of the bigots in here are internalising the fact
that the OP is paying up for other people to literally write a
technical book due to reasons that currently affect the wellbeing of a
lot of contributors of some of those 9 projects, the fact is:
mycroftiv is paying for a technical book about 9, don't care about the
political motivations? don't discuss that aspect. Better plan9
material is good even for you "snowflakes".

Re: [9fans] Sponsoring a new Intro book by the Flan 9 Poundationy

2022-01-24 Thread adr

People has different points of view about how sociaty is organized.
This can change with time along the way of ones life, sometimes
not. The only way you can promote ideas you think are best for the
future is through dialog, engaging _all_ different kinds of people
in the conversation.

There is a trend now which has came up thanks to the application
of technology to the most stupid behavior of people in general,
the so called social media. This allows people who doesn't do really
anything for anyone to pretend to others and themselves that they
are some kind of brave justice warriors, but acting in the most
cowardly way, twisting words getting them out of context, making
up _rules_ so they can justify attacks and insults to the next poor
bastard. Yes, the next because there is going to be another one,
always.

Witnessing this on this mailing list makes me sick.

One thing I like of old school computer science mailing list is
that complete different people engage in conversations and work
together no matter what political views these people have. There
is room for some healthy discussion on these matters, and normally
it ends by itself when boundaries are crossed. I've seen this
discussions in other lists, and always -when no child(mental) are
involved- there is an effort to keep a friendly atmosphere at the
end.

I've read the books of Ballesteros. Yes, say the name you coward.
The only thing I can say about them is that they need a revision
to a most correct English. Is not easy when you are not a native
speaker. I can notice it when I read it, but I can make the same
mistakes in this very same mail I'm writing.

Maybe some native speaker could help on this.

"support oppression"
"maybe I have heard secondhand"
"fight against right wing ideas"

You see, I don't know you, either Ballesteros, and maybe I would
agree more with the ideas you could _recite_ over a cup of coffee,
but I'm pretty sure a conversation with Ballesteros (whatever ideas
he has) would be more exiting and productive.

This "Tell me only what I want to hear, or we'll ban you" crap...

I think you are not bipolar, you are just another piece of Mr. Hankey.

This list is becoming a South Park Christmas special...

Hi 9fans, Got some new ideas im excited about right now.
Apparently the author of the well-known 'intro to OS abstractions'
book has political views that are not cool and support oppression
maybe I have heard secondhand.
We need a better book to introduce people to 9.
I'd like to see something created that talks about all forms of 9 and
of the ANTS variant especially since if im bipolar and spending my
money to try to help plan 9, im obviously also gonna be hyping my
stuff along with trying to fight against right wing ideas.
The cause to make plan 9 an accepting welcoming community for all
humans requires good information resources and support.
The funny-named organization I just thought up, The Flan 9 Poundation,
offers a bounty from me personally of at least $200 for producing this
content. The name is an obvious namespace pun. We want to work in a
friendly way with everyone but we also want good stuff and peace and
support for minority trans disabled mentally wacked out
counterculture.

Peace and love and lets make Plan 9 amazing and full of rainbow love,
JenBen

definitely you. Someone wants to write a book about a technical topic,
and all you and that other idiot can talk about are the motivations,
because you are intellectually incapable of contributing to technical
work.

If you don't want to or are incapable of helping with the book, just

khm, you are using snowflake here in wrong context :-(

first letter from original author was snowflakish,
there's no need to use words like "not cool political views, support

[9fans] Strange 'uintptr' behavior

2022-01-24 Thread Pavel Klinkovský
Hi all,

I tried some artificial example for Plan9 compiler (5c)...

This code is compiled without any problem:
uintptr frst[] = {nil, nil, nil, nil, nil};
uintptr scnd[] = {nil, nil, frst, [0]};

But this one fails:
uintptr frst[] = {nil, nil, nil, nil, nil};
uintptr scnd[] = {nil, nil, frst, [1]};

...with message:
cpu% 5c -p t.c
/usr/pavel/t.c:16[t.c:888] initializer is not a constant: scnd

OTOH, replacement of 'uintptr' by 'void*' is compiled without any problem:
void* frst[] = {nil, nil, nil, nil, nil};
void* scnd[] = {nil, nil, frst, [1]};

Any explanation is appreciated.

Pavel

Maybe so! However it’s all the other bullshit that this list and Plan 9 doesn’t
need.

Too many opinions! Remember! Opinions are like assholes - everybody has one.
And you know what comes out of both more often than not!

Let’s play with Plan 9 and friends and keep the bizarro bullshit at home.

David,
How do your drivers handle a virtio-based CD-ROM?
qemu by default uses IDE, or can be configured to use SATA CD-ROM devices,
however, OpenBSD's vmd(8) strictly uses a virtio-based CD-ROM.

I don't know how the interactions end up differing between hard drive and
CD-ROM access in that case, but its something to look at if you weren't aware
of it.
