You've certainly my gratitude and appreciation.

Might we convince you to make a single tarball available, to bypass any
administrative hastle with access and such.

The reason why Musica Viva is down now has nothing whatsoever to do with
the real issue. Apparently the domain name has been blocked due to
communication problems between VeriSign and their Norwegian agent,
ActiveISP. That's what happened last year at least, and I know I paid
that bill two months ago (I just checked just to be absolutely sure). At
first I saw no reason to bother, but on second thought I realized this
is a golden opportunity to vent off some of my built-up frustration.
Some poor bloke down at ActiveISP is gonna get a hell of a start of the
day tomorrow. ;-)
Maybe I should sue them, btw? Does anybody know anything about the legal
aspect of such a situation?
Anyway, the site will be back again soon, It probably won't be for long,
but at least it'll get a proper funeral. Musica Viva ain't gonna just
softly and suddenly vanish away!

Yep. All the best anyway.

I've got a feeling that when I get some distance to the whole thing,
getting rid of that greedy and ungrateful monster called Musica Viva
will have been one of the best things ever to happen to me. Somehow that
doesn't feel very comforting...

[abcusers] Musica Viva, latest news (Was: Goodbye)

2002-11-20 Thread Frank Nordberg
I've received so many messages both on- and off list now, I beginning to
conuse them. This reply was meant for the whole list, but somehow I
ended up sending it to just one person:

---

Seems things are really out of my hand right now.
I just had a talk with sysop at my web host, and he simply refused to
take the site down!!!
So no matter what I do, it seems Musica Viva will stay online at least
until it's time to re-register the domain name (and that's not until
September 2003).

The site is down right now because of that domain name trouble, but that
shouldn't take long to fix.
A few very important question here:
Like any law-abiding citizen I pay my bills to my domain name registrar
every year, right on time. Then, for the second year in a row, the
registrar messes up the renweal, causing my site to drop out.
Has anybody had any experience with such a situation? What is my legal
position? Can I sue them? If I can can, for how much?
Active ISP is Europe's largest domain name registrar. What can I do to
ruin their reputation so thoroughly they never ever see buiness again?

And finally a warning to all who is going to - or know someone who is
going to - register a domain name in Europe: Whatever you do, dON't USE
Active ISP!!!

I'd really love to, but the site is just too big. The abc files alone
takes up 20 MB.

Anyway, Musica Viva should be back again tomorrow, and apparently it's
back for good whether I want it or not ;-)

But you maintain the site ? Just go in there, rm -r * and replace
with a page, er, explaining the situation ? Being very careful not to say
anything that could be considered libellous, Of Course.

You have my sympathy, Frank, you really do. It's not _entirely_ a
thankless task running a good website, but it doesn't need much to go
wrong before you can feel it's not worth it.

A good deed never goes unpunished, someone told me once.

And it's only a few days since I went there, wondering if I could check
the notes of Dowland's Mistress Winters' Jump, which I've been learning
from a local melodeon player (!!). Intriguing title, good tune.

[abcusers] Goodbye

2002-11-20 Thread Forgeot Eric
Frank, I'm so sorry you can't maintain Musicaviva any longer...
It was a good place on the web.

Is there a hope it will come back again ?
Is it a money problem (cost of servers...) ? If so it's a real
pity then. Can't you move to a free account ?

I've seen also you speak about a job problem. I'm not good a
saying things in such cases so I'll keep quiet then.

I choose Windows Media Player as my midi device
...I expected to be able to choose Play
midi ... and the midi player would pop up and play the
 current tune.
However, I found I had to export the tune to midi and
...with File/Open. Is this how it's supposed to work?
No, its supposed to work like you expected, the player pops up and starts playing.
Kind of hokey, but its the best I can do for now. You have to choose the media player
.exe file (or a different program) as your player, which in my machine is in Program
Files/Windows Media Player, and in some older machines might be in the windows
directory.

If you're doing this and its still not working, let me know what OS you're running and
I'll try and reproduce it.

Thanks,
Aaron
