As a multi-platform solution, Mozilla mail's trainable spam filters do a pretty
good job.  Presumably their Thunderbird standalone mail system would be at
least as good, too.

The problem is that the argyll.wisemagic.com mailserver
acts as an open relay which tranfers any incomming
spam message to the subscribers of this e-mail list.

In the meanwhile, I managed to block the spam by using
the following .procmailrc file:

LOGFILE=$HOME/procmail.log
LOGABSTRACT=yes

setting for my .procmailrc file that frees me from all the abcusers spam
messages. 

But it would be better if the SPAM would be removed in an earlier stage,
on the abcusers server.

SpamPal works on Windows systems.  It behaves as an e-mail
server that gets between e-mail addresses and any Windows
e-mail program in use.  It ain't perfect, but can be
configured to filter most spam.  There are probably other
programs that do a similar job.

There's evidence that this message didn't come from the list.  One of
the bits of evidence is that messages to the list have the line:

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The above message has a Reply-To line giving another  address,  which
is  probably  a machine that will deal with your reply (and list your
address as a known-good address ;-).

This message  probably  came  from  someone  who  has  both  you  and
abcusers-list  in their address book.  Their machine is infected with
one of the Outlook viruses or such that is turning their machine into
a  spam  relay.  Most of them cover the tracks, so you can't trace it
back to the original spam sender.
