It's a rather special document containing ABC transcriptions of a
privately owned late 18th/ealry 19th Century tune book. Definitely not
something you'll find mirrored all over the web.

I got your first message, and sent Mark Fitzsimons' email address to John
off-list. I got your repeat message, but not the message describing the
document. It's been very quiet on the list for a while now - is that
because it's summer/exam season or because a lot of messages have got
lost?

I'm intrigued. There are Winders with manuscripts in Wyresdale, just down
the way from Lancaster. Is this a copy of the one I typed up
(http://www.leeds.ac.uk/music/Info/RRTuneBk/Winder/Winder.abc) or a copy
of the Village Music Project's more complete version of the earliest
stuff, or is it a third thing (_was_ it. Damn. perhaps we'll never know)
?

Nope; I don't seem to have any such message. This sounds
like something that might be better on your web site, with
just the URL posted to the list. Do you know about the
tradtunes list?

That's the one. I didn't realize it came from you site, Richard. The way
it was presented at the Geocities web site made it look like an original
for that site.

Anyways, seems there's no real problem after all then. Everything at the
SoHo/9618/ site is present elsewhere on the web.

actually it's a less complete copy, just 144 tunes while you have 147.

Yes we do know. I have a copy of the entire page - even tried to post
the damn thing at abcusers.

Well it's not that important after all, since it turns out Richard's
already got it.

No, I don't. Should I?

The usual unfortunate combination. Grab a copy, don't check for updates,
and fail to attribute so that anybody who copies from that site can't
check for themselves. It's several years since the last 3 tunes were
added.

seem to be a lot of mirroring of others' abc tunes. So far I haven't
heard of any problems with it, other than the obvious observation of
the difficulty of getting typos fixed.

In a few cases, I've put up a copy of someone else's tune with added
chords, when they didn't have chords. I also include the URL of the
original in such cases. For a couple of the tunes, I've mentioned
this to the composers, and so far they've never objected. (If they
did, I'd remove the tune, but I get the impression that most people
enjoy seeing their tunes around on the net like this.)

Geocities is becoming somewhat known for snafus, but this does seem a
bit strange. I looked around a bit, but couldn't discover any email
address associated with this tune collection. Does anyone know who it
 belongs to?

On a somewhat smaller scale, there used to be a few dozen tunes at
www.celticmusic.co.nz, and they've all disappeared. Does anyone
recognize this site, or know who it belonged to? Did they maybe move
 somewhere?

That site belonged to someone named Mark Fitzsimons, and contained music
in Celtic style composed by the webmaster.
He is also supposed to have a home page at
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~markf/
but that's only an empty directory at the moment.

A Google search for Mark Fitzsimons comes up with 96 hits, so I suppose
it shouldn't be too hard to track him down.

These were the only sites that lost tunes this time. The overall
 totals were:

TUNES diff | TITLES diff | FILES diff | HOST
   82378 -7049 | 92635 -8122 | 30849 1206 | TOTAL

The file cou increasing while the tune count decreases is explained
by the fact that most of the disappearances are large files with lots
of tunes, while most of the new files contain only a single tune.
There were the usual couple dozen sites whose counts increased,
including more than 700 at www.capecod.net/~bblack/, plus 300 at
www.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/abc/ which puts his count at over
 1000 tunes.

The geocities collection does seem to be mostly a mirror of other
people's files, so there were probably few actual tunes lost. But
mirrors are valuable when the network gets flakey, which is all too
common, so it's useful to keep sites like this in working order.
