Hmm.. Plenty of good ideas, but I have to admit if you find MOM difficult and don't want to spend the time, most of the solutions talked about will have similar issues. I admit MOM interface is terrible for what you sound like you want to do. Then again, can it be simpler (the answer's yes, but that's another discussion.)

The benefit of MOM is that it comes out of the box configured with plenty of thresholds already configured from the vendor that made your directory service. If you go looking for another product, ensure that the product you look at does the same. If they don't you'll spend oodles of time configuring and tweaking the product. In fact, I've seen implementations that finish tweaking just in time for the next upgrade cycle ;)

I certainly have found the AM interface a
lot less overwhelming and pleasant to work with as opposed to MOM although MOM
2005 SP1 is a vast improvement.

Al makes a good point Enterprise
Management is not typically an open-the-box, fire-and-forget solution. In fact
I havent seen a single product out there that comes close at least not one
that I havent been terribly disappointed with. WUG (Whats Up Gold) used to
be pretty close (talking 6 years ago). But once you get the concepts, and
figure out what you want to monitor, it gets much easier. If you had all Cisco
Catalyst 4000 routers and 7000 routers and HP servers with all the same config,
and all running W2K3R2 with the same config (brands are for example), itd be
much simpler. But I doubt anyone has a homogenous system, so we get 400 EM
products all trying to be all things to all people, because as soon as one of those
vendors drops support for something, the support phones start ringing asking
for it back. Hmmm. I think thats the story of Windows as well, come to think
of it (what do you mean, no 8.3 filename support?! J)

What aspects of MOM do you find difficult in the GUI?

What price-point are you looking to maintain?

Hi Neil

Just standard system availability checks and alerting,
simple sms or email would do.

Monitor things like

1) Availability - ping test (packet
latency) etc, port availability, ldap binding tests (how long it takes to makes
ldap object query)
2) Eventlog - eventlog searches and
triggers (no need for consolidation - such as what Intrust is
doing)
3) Reporting - monthly or management type
of reporting or trending, say disk space utilization over the past few months
trends
4) Performance counters - perfmon
counters to monitor other things such as Exchange queue length
etc
5) Email Round trip test - sends smtp
mails or mapi mails to a destination, opens it with pop3 or mapi and check if
emails receives within x amount of minutes.

Things like that, am using Argent currently (cost a bomb) -
was evaluating SiteScope (quite user friendly) but the pricing model of per

Freddy,

I would imagine an app such as MOM or Appman could meet
most of these reqs.

As one activeDir poster says tho, you can only choose 2
from the following 3 options: cheap, secure and fast. [I would add "robust" to
that list and offer 2 from 4!]

I would add that 'you get what you pay for' and would
personally always expect to pay a premium for a serious monitoring solution,
since it is of paramount importance to most orgs.

Server monitoring tools

Hi Neil

Just standard system availability checks and alerting,
simple sms or email would do.

Monitor things like

1) Availability - ping test (packet
latency) etc, port availability, ldap binding tests (how long it takes to makes
ldap object query)
2) Eventlog - eventlog searches and
triggers (no need for consolidation - such as what Intrust is
doing)
3) Reporting - monthly or management type
of reporting or trending, say disk space utilization over the past few months
trends
4) Performance counters - perfmon
counters to monitor other things such as Exchange queue length
etc
5) Email Round trip test - sends smtp
mails or mapi mails to a destination, opens it with pop3 or mapi and check if
emails receives within x amount of minutes.

Things like that, am using Argent currently (cost a bomb) -
was evaluating SiteScope (quite user friendly) but the pricing model of per
points monitoring may be a disadvantage...

Thank you and have a splendid
day!

What do you mean by "monitoring"?

I normally split this into several sub

3. Audit and Compliance
4. Archival

Too true. Try getting some procurement

Freddy,

I would imagine an app such as MOM or
Appman could meet most of these reqs.

As one activeDir poster says tho, you can
only choose 2 from the following 3 options: cheap, secure and fast. [I would
add robust to that list and offer 2 from 4!]

I would add that 'you get what you pay
for' and would personally always expect to pay a premium for a serious
monitoring solution, since it is of paramount importance to most orgs.

You will get as many different answers as people that
respond to this. Monitoring tends to be a big personal feeling item, especially
when you start asking for cheap solutions. Most of the bigger well known names
are not inexpensive such as MOM, HP OVO, etc.

Something I used for a long time for various things
including a majority of the monitoring of the DCs of a very largeAD
Deployment I used to do ops forwas called HostMonitor.

http://www.ks-soft.com/hostmon.eng/index-price.htm

The tool is (or at least was I haven't looked in a while)
primarily agentless, in fact agents were an addon if you wanted them. That is
one of the things I liked about it. I have personal issues with depending on a
server completely monitoring itself. The issues being additional overhead for
the agents, the fact that the agents can impact the functioning of the server,
and that if the server is bad enough off, the agent can't tell anyone anyway. I
much prefer service availability based monitoring, test the services remotely
like a client would.

I was able to pull most of my custom perl scripts into the
engine and let it do the driving of the scripts and the notification for all
sorts of things like AD replication, WINS name resolution, etc.
