Re: I keep getting lan-free backup errors, but we have migrated away from lanfree backups

2018-10-23 Thread Stefan Folkerts
Hi Marc,

Thank you for your reply.

1 - the wrong stanza was edited
There was only one stanza using lanfree on the host, the other (b/a backup)
always used lan-based backups, I checked that at least 3 times and my
colleague looked over my shoulder because I felt like I was going a bit
crazy. ;-)

2 - DSM_DIR is set and the wrong dsm.sys file is edited
I searched the entire machine, al dsm.sys files are links to the same file
that was edited, all have * in front of all lanfree components.

3 - there's another machine also configured to use that nodename
This appears to be it because the fqdn I see in the messages resolved to a
different server that I know nothing about. Maybe they have something
standby that is connecting using the same nodename.
The other server also has an IP that's not on the server that I migrated.
:-)
Thanks for this, I was a bit stuck thinking it had to come from the same
machine!

Sometimes you just need a little nudge in the right direction, so thanks
again.

2018-10-23 Thread Marc Lanteigne
Hi Stefan,

It's likely one of those things:
1 - the wrong stanza was edited
2 - DSM_DIR is set and the wrong dsm.sys file is edited
3 - there's another machine also configured to use that nodename
4 - there's more than one dsmcad and the wrong one was restarted. You
should be able to see the IP in the activity log when the session is
established, that will at least help you narrow down which machine it's
coming from.
5 - if enablelanfree is specified more than once in a stanza, the last
reference to it will be the one taking effect.

-
Thanks,
Marc...

Subject: [ADSM-L] I keep getting lan-free backup errors, but we have
migrated away from lanfree backups

Hi,

Quick question, I can't seem to solve this little problem.

I've migrated a couple of nodes from making lanfree backups to making
lan-based backups over 10Gb/s to another server (exported node definitions
only).
Everything works fine except for the fact that actlog is filled with these
warnings for all nodes that made lanfree backups in the past:

ANE4048W (Session: 755286, Node: ) LAN-Free connection failed.
(SESSION: 755286)

Now, I removed everythink lanfree related from the stanza of these nodes
and restarted the cad (no scheduler active).
The dsmsta isn't running.
I still get these warnings, I'm a bit at a loss as to why.
I thought enablelanfree yes->no would do the trick but now I have removed
all lanfree entry's and restarted the dsmcad as I said, but still the
messages keep popping up.

Haven't worked with this in a while, so there is a good chance I'm just
forgetting something.
Any suggestions?

Regards,
   Stefan

Hi Tom,

Take a look at this APAR and see if it is a possible match:

If that is not a match, you should open a PMR with support.

I am setting up a new TSM for VE VBS server and first I got the standard
BACLIENT set up to back up the VBS server itself (standard file level
backup of the TSM for VE server). I then got the LANFREE working and was
able do a test backup to the nodename used by the standard file level
backup (of a VM which backed up LANFREE). The problem I am having is
that
when LANFREE is enabled I cannot authenticate. I put the new TSM for VE
scheduler nodename into the BACLIENT DSM.OPT to set the password, but I
could only set it if lanfree was off. In the DSM.OPT for the data mover
scheduler service I have the same problem. If I turn off LANFREE it
pulls
a schedule and will probably back up tonight. If I turn on LANFREE it
just
logs that it can't prompt for PW as it is running in the background.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

That sounds kinda like the problem but I am already running TSM Storage
Agent 6.3.3.2 (the fix is to use SA 6.3 or greater). Here are the
versions I currently have installed:

TSM Storage Agent 6.3.3.2
TSM for VE 7.1.1.0
TSM Client 7.1.1.0

Do you think upgrading any of these would help? The APAR also states this
will be fixed in 7.1.3 but the latest I see for download is 7.1.2.0 right
now.

2015-03-04 Thread Remco Post
maybe you should write a note to management that you cannot support such
seriously outdated client operating systems, that you will not compromise the
operation by staying downlevel with your servers, asking them to accept the
risk of running unsupported OS without any viable backup (I assume LAN based
backups are not possible either) and urge them to upgrade that outdated
environment because it is insecure (no patches for bash and ssl bugs)
unmaintained and cannot be backed up.

alternatively, run a dedicated ‘old shit’ TSM server, outdated itself, so still
a huge risk to operation. Good stuff that you don’t fly any aircraft in an
organization that cannot even keep it’s IT infra up 2 date ;-)

 Hi,

We have a tsm 6.2 server with 3 libs. Lib A hold copypool, B hold data
migrated from disk pool and C hold lanfree backup data.

Customer reports rman restore fails. Looking at the error log it reports
data currently not available on server. Looking at the client config it
had beem configured to write to dp instead of lib C.

We set enable lanfree to no and sure enough restore started running over
 lan.

In the past we had to place our copy pool vols to offsite to prevent
sta's from failing restore from copy vols due to not having paths to that
library. Same seems to go for prim data.

Why isnt the client/sta failing back to lan restore (same with path
failures) if the only possible path available is lan?

Re: San question on Lanfree backup

2013-09-24 Thread Huebner, Andy
Your storage agent should not see the changer. The TSM server owns the library
and will mount and unmount all tapes.

Verify that the zoning is correct for the missing drives. The STA must the
zoned to the ports you present the drives on.

Verify that the access group(s) are correct for the missing drives. The DD
must allow access (masking for the SAN people) to the drives from the port that
the STA is zoned to. This access is controlled by the WWN, so if you have more
than 1 access group be sure the correct WWN is in all of the groups.

Another lanfree backup dsmsta

2013-02-18 Thread Robert Ouzen
Hi To All

I have a lanfree backup working fine from ages , now need to run for DRM
purpose from another backup server connected to physical tapes LTO5.

My question is how to configure another :

· Dsmsta.opt

· Devconfig.txt with the command: dsmsta setstorageserver with the
appropriate new server

· And how to load it in addition to the original dsmsta

Of course I need to keep old definitions to continue to backup on a daily
base to the original server on VTL tapes (as I am working now)

Can anybody point to a relevant article how to configure it or to give me some
tips

Re: simultaneous write and lanfree

2012-05-12 Thread Mehdi Salehi
Thanks Neil, it works if copystg is set to blank.
But what I understand from the following excerpt is that autocopy=none
should be enough:
(Reference: TSM 6.2 Problem Determination Guide)
*If the storage pool is set for simultaneous-write operations*, the
“Copy Storage Pool(s):” value references one or more other storage pool
names
and Tivoli Storage Manager interprets the simultaneous-write operation to
be a
higher priority than the LAN-free data transfer. Because simultaneous-write
operations are considered a higher priority operation, this storage pool is
not
reported as LAN-free enabled and as such, the client will send the data
directly to
the server. The storage agent does not support simultaneous-write
operations.

Mehdi

It may be worth blanking out the COPYSTGPOOL value for the storage pool as
well as changing the AUTOCOPY value.

I know that in TSM prior to 6.x, the AUTOCOPY property of the storage pool
did not exist - simultaneous write was determined by whether or not
COPYSTGPOOL was defined for the storage pool. It's possible the validate
lanfree code is still using this as the basis for deciding whether a pool
 is lanfree-capable.

Re: simultaneous write and lanfree

2012-05-10 Thread Neil Schofield

Re: LANfree to multiple tape drives concurrently

2012-03-26 Thread Jim Young
Hi

In the case of a simple filesystem backup (BA), set the RESOURCEUTILIZATION
parameter in the client dsm.opt/sys file to allow for multiple mounts and set
the MAXIMUM MOUNT POINTS (maxnummp) in the Node config to allow for how many
drives you want to let them use.

I tend to set it like this for my four drive clients.

update node NODENAME maxnummp 4

Add this to dsm.sys file in the Windows world or dsm.opt for Unix.
resourceutilization 10

This page explains the setting a littl better than I could as the numbering
system is just strange.

The problem is that changes are not gradual. Files are actually monthly
backups coming from other backup software like Acronis, BackupExec and even
native MS SQL backup files (yes, it is weird!) . I don't think journal
could help a lot, because there are not many files, but some large ones.

LANfree to multiple tape drives concurrently

2012-03-25 Thread Mehdi Salehi
Hi,
Can a TSM client (BA or TDP) be configured to use multiple tape drives
concurrently? A filesystem with tens of Terabytes of incremental data
should be backed up which evidently takes lots of hours with a single LTO4
drive. Say there are enough ports/paths/ISLs available to support at least
two parallel backup sessions from the client to the library. The source
disk's read performance is approximately twice the write performance of a
tape drive.

Thank you

Re: LANfree to multiple tape drives concurrently

2012-03-25 Thread Stefan Folkerts
Yes it can, if it is just one filesystem you will have to manually split it
in the TSM BA configuration but this can also be done.
I am not sure if it is going to be faster than a backup via disk, that will
depend on the size and the amount of the files to be backed up I think.
How many files are there and what is your changerate on the data in amount
of files and TB's?
I am sure you know about the BA journaling feature, that could be a life
saver when you have large amounts of files and you are on a supported
filesystem platform.

Ok, well..

Step 1: Set up a server with StorageAgent

Step 2: Install ba client on the other servers, and insert in dsm.sys the

lanfreecommmethod tcpip
lanfreetcpserveraddress IP_STORAGE_AGENT_PROXY

Step 3: On TSM server execute for every client to be proxyed: validate lanfree
node_name storage_agent_name

Launche a backup test and verify with storage_agent_name: q se

Hope this helps.

2010-11-23 Thread Ullrich Mänz
Hi peppix,

you are using incremental backup for an offline database backup. I wonder,
how you deal with 5 tape drives. Normally, backup incremental is using one
session per mountpoint. set max. number of mountpoints in node definition
for parallelism.

The throughput reported is ok for single session backup via LAN, It is
slow for a large file backup via LANfree for a completely fibre channel
based RAID system, but acceptable for SATA storage.

Have a look at your storage environment and node definitions with respect
to the directory layout of the database environment.

regards
Ulli

Hi all,
I'm trying to backup an oracle db (5TB) by lanfree, but the transfer speed

backup.

The client configuration (v.5.5.2.2):

SErvername X
   COMMMethodTCPip
   TCPPort 1500
   TCPServeraddress XXX
   DISKBUFFSIZE 1023

   passwordaccess generate
   nodename XXX
   RESOURCEUTILIZATION 10
   TCPNOdelay YES
   TXNByteLimit 2097152
   LargeCommBuffer NO

   inclexcl /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/inclexcl.lst
   enablelanfreeyes
   LANFREECommmethod TCPIP
   LANFREETCPPort1500

Server configuration (v.5.5.4.0):
   COMMmethod TCPIP
   TCPPort1500
   TCPWindowsize 1024
   TCPBufsize32
   TCPNODELAY YES
   COMMmethod HTTP
   HTTPPort 1580
   COMMmethod SHaredmem
   SHMPort 1510

   DATEformat 2
   TIMEformat 1

   EXPInterval 0

   MIRRORREAD DB NORMAL
   MIRRORWRITE LOG PARALLEL
   MIRRORWRITE DB SEQUENTIAL
   VOLUMEHistory /tsmdblog/config/volhistory.txt
   VOLUMEHistory /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/volhistory.txt

Considerations:
- 12 drives installed in the library
- SAN and TSM work good (with the same tsm server in the same SAN I backup
a lot of SAP by TDP at 300MB/s)
- all server backupped by incremental have the same problem (same
configuration but different san switch and different hba).

Can you help me please?
thanks,
best regards

session summary report from the client for a backup operation which
exhibited this poor performance.

Hi peppix,

you are using incremental backup for an offline database backup. I wonder,
how you deal with 5 tape drives. Normally, backup incremental is using one
session per mountpoint. set max. number of mountpoints in node definition
for parallelism.

The throughput reported is ok for single session backup via LAN, It is
slow for a large file backup via LANfree for a completely fibre channel
based RAID system, but acceptable for SATA storage.

Have a look at your storage environment and node definitions with respect
to the directory layout of the database environment.

regards
Ulli

a lot of SAP by TDP at 300MB/s)

configuration but different san switch and different hba).

2010-11-23 Thread Hart, Charles A
A couple questions

1) How is this 5TB laid out, 1,2,3,4 or more file systems?

2) How many streams do you see when the backup is running? (Resource
utilization / mutli streaming is by File System for flat file backups.

3) Are the tape drives on dedicated HBA's?

4) Are you sure that the Data is going over the fibre? If not configured
properly TSM will automatically direct the backups over the LAN (sounds right
for 70MBS)

Using DB2 lanfree with TSM

2010-07-08 Thread tuncel.mu...@akbank.com
Hi,

Lanfree Client AIX 6.1.0.0
TSM Server AIX 5.3.0.0
Server, client and Storage Agents TSM v5.4.1.0
Sun StorageTek SL8500 with 22 Sun StorageTek T1 drives
Gresham 8.1.1.0

I am trying to backup a huge DB2 database lanfree, but the archive logs should
go to the LAN.
 - What TSM manual should I read for this ? I have found a Redbook from 2001.
 - We have a lot an experince with file, Oracle and SQL server lanfree, but
first time with DB2, is anything different here, parameter setting maybe ?
 - Google in the issue suggest 2 different server stanza for backups to go
lanfree and logs go LAN, but in the Redbook says it is enough to set a archive
copygroup with copy destination to disk pool, which is true ?

Tuncel Mutlu

It is NOT the DP/Exchange options file that you need to update.
You need to configure the options file for the TSM Remote Client

Hi Del

Thanks for the reply .. I already add the option lines to enable
lanfree in the dsm.opt client (by the way did I need those lines in
the dsm.opt on the TDP side )

But got the error:

Unable to obtain model type for '\\.\Tape4', rc = 46

I think is a driver problem, I install the device driver from the
installation package 5.5.2.0.

It install the storage agent under program files(x86) as an 32bit
application and the driver install is LTO tape drive , my tapes are
virtual tapes library under Data Domain.

In my previous TDP it's worked fine

Thanks,

For VSS backups, the Windows BA Client performs the data transfer.
You must configure the Windows BA Client options file, (more
specifically, the option file for the TSM Remote Client Agent aka
DSMAGENT)
for LANFREE communications.

 Hi to all

I implant today the new TDP for Microsoft Exchange server 2010
version 6.1.2.0 on an OS Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64Bit,
succeed to install and configure correctly with the new configuration
like:

Grant proxynode and new VSS feature (running by the TSM client).

My next stage was to implant lanfree backup, my TSM server version
is 5.5.2.0 and my Storage agent is 5.5.2.0.

I add in my dsm.opt on the TDP side the lines:

 ENABLELANFREEYES

 Lanfreecommmethodtcpip

 lanfreetcpserveraddress 132.74.XX.XXX

 lanfreetcpport1502

I had a HBA and configure it with a correct zone and see the correct
VTL drives of my Data Domain VTL in the device manager.

Configure paths on the TSM server side as:

Source Name: EXCHSRVB_SA

Source Type: SERVER

 Last Update by (administrator): ROBERT

  Last Update Date/Time: 06/07/2010 20:57:15

I validate the connection with validate lanfree command successfully:

Re: TDP Microsoft Exchange 2010 with lanfree

2010-06-08 Thread Robert Ouzen
Hi Del

Thanks for the reply .. I already add the option lines to enable lanfree in the
dsm.opt client (by the way did I need those lines in the dsm.opt on the TDP
side )

But got the error:

Unable to obtain model type for '\\.\Tape4', rc = 46

I think is a driver problem, I install the device driver from the installation
package 5.5.2.0.

It install the storage agent under program files(x86) as an 32bit application
and the driver install is LTO tape drive , my tapes are virtual tapes library
under Data Domain.

In my previous TDP it's worked fine

Thanks,

Robert

Robert,

For VSS backups, the Windows BA Client performs the data transfer.
You must configure the Windows BA Client options file, (more specifically, the
option file for the TSM Remote Client Agent aka
DSMAGENT)
for LANFREE communications.

Thanks,

Del

For VSS backups, the Windows BA Client performs the data transfer.
You must configure the Windows BA Client options file, (more

Re: Implementing LANFree data Movement - WIN Storage Agent Server Requirements

2010-01-14 Thread David McClelland
Yes, you'll certainly need Fibre Channel cards for your Storage Agent client
- the whole point of LANfree data movement is that data is being moved
(backed up/restored) does not traverse the LAN but instead moves directly
between the host and the data storage device (be it tape or, more rarely,
SANergy disk etc), thereby reducing LAN contention, removing potential LAN
bottleneck and hopefully improving data throughput. You'll need a transport
other than the LAN in order to achieve this. I've only ever implemented/seen
this with fibre channel SAN for which FC adapter cards are required.

Hope that helps, and I hope I've understood your question properly!

Without an HBA you wont be able to acces your tape drives from the storage

dEAR all,

I had a problem with archive in AIX client,TSM Client 5.5.0.0, TSM STA

When i do an archive , client session is disconnected again and again,
archive process seems never finished (it takes so long so i cancel it) and
the act log show this error:

Is it bug in TSM STA 5.5.3 as in

Because when i turn the STA off, the process runs smoothly.
Thanks for any help

2009-10-17 Thread Richard Sims

If your server and client fully evidence the indicators as described
in the cited IC62348 APAR, you could pursue that. Otherwise, pursue
applying the current maintenance level to your 5.5.0 client, which is
unhealthily running at base level, with no maintenance. Once that is
done, if the problem persists, I would perform some isolation
testing, and turn on client tracing if that depth of information is
necessary.

OK, new thing, I've TWO TS3100, so I'm going to make a copy of the

Re: TSM 5.5 using LANFree backup really slow

You didn't say what your client machine is. How about an image copy and
a complete incremental on the weekend and a incremental-by-date on other
days. For a full restore you can restore the image and then apply the
incrementals. This should be reasonably quick. Incremental-by-date is
the fastest form of incremental backup, but is not complete, hence you
need a normal incremental periodically.

I'm a little perplexed by your stated need for a full backup. Most TSM
installations do not bother with fulls, as they are unnecessary. Using
a separate storage pool for this node, or a shared but collocated
storage pool will provide the necessary restore speed. If that is not
sufficient consider an active pool, and if that is still not fast enough
you can go with the image plus incremental.

Hi,
Maybe You can try this first:, using Operating system backup, try to backup
direct to tape, and see the result.
I've been facing this kind of problem, file server backup using LANFree.
Total data approximately 900 GB - 1 TB, number of files approx 1,1 millions,
and it took more than 24 hours. But when i used Operating system backup,
backup direct to tape, the result much better than TSM LANFree backups.
So i check all recomended setting for performance tuning, and there's an
increasing in speed and transfer time.

With this setup I've got, as said above, 60~80GB/h.

So, I decide to setup TSM for SAN.. Download a lot of docs/books and
start reading/doing.
I end up with:

- Fabric zoning changes, isolating a HBA port on each dual-port
cards for

nodes
- Installed StorageAgent on node2
- Installed TSM Client on node2
- - Configured the client to connect on storageagent
- Redefine all my TSM Server setup
- - Make Library as shared=yes, configure storage agent as a server,
configure path, configure datawritepath=lanfree and so on...

Ok, time to backup.
And, for my surprise i got only ~500MB per minute.. I thought it
very

strange.. I've no idea what is the problem, I've tried with
compression and without, DATAREADPATH=LAN and SAN,
VirtualMountPoints

or Physical ...

Does anybody have an idea the reason of that bad transfer rate?? The
servers are Samba Servers, with all kind of file and all size

As I said before, I'm really new with TSM so is really possible that
I've misconfigured something :)

Anyway, thanks in advance, and any help will be appreciated.

Hi David,

Well FileServer is exact what i'm backup ;/
A lot of files with sizes between 100k and 20Mb.

So, there is nothing that can be done to improve this, at least for 100GB/h?
Just to point my head toward right direction.. LANFree backups or LAN backups.

Thanks,

LANFree to disk restore from deduplicated storage pool

2009-05-04 Thread Bill Mansfield
Suppose I do a LANFree backup to a GPFS sequential disk storage pool,
then deduplicate that pool. On restore, is the storage agent smart
enough to access the deduplicated data, or will this turn into a LAN
restore?

good question. The answer is that, yes, the LANfree client is mart
enough to do a LAN-free restore (so I've been told by IBM).

Does LANFREE work on VMware

Hello All,

Thanks for your help!!

I have a client with 3 Exchange serves w/2.5TB of mail, running the TDP and
they are using LAN-FREE. They want to vitrualize the three servers onto a

saw on the Info Center that a guest is not supported directly for LAN-FREE

Does anyone have experience with this configuration? Any help or info would

in theory, yes, but, VMWare doesn't allow you to route FC tape drives
to your guest OS, so that is a bit of a problem. If you have SCSI or
SAS drives, this should work

LanFree on Solaris10 or as TSM server

2009-03-10 Thread sunguy
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Solaris/IBMtape.README

if you are running Emulex FC HBA driver -- lpfc with this Emulex HBA -
3). Configure with Emulex FC HBA
   a) Run Emulex HBAnyware or lputil utilities to find and record the target and
   lun of tape device
   b) For lpfc.30g or later, change these parameters for IBMtape driver in
/kernel/drv/lpfc.conf and reboot.
If you want the IBMtape driver as the default tape driver, set the
parameter
 target-tape=IBMtape;
If IBMtape is used as the default changer driver, modify the setting
 target-tapechanger=IBMtape;

These parameters can also be made hba specific, by prefixing the
parameter with lpfcX-,
where X is the lpfc instance number.
   c) Add the entry in the end of /usr/kernel/drv/IBMtape.conf
   name=IBMtape parent=lpfc target=0;
If failed to configure the changer, you may need to add the entries:
   name=IBMtape parent=lpfc target=X lun=0;
   name=IBMtape parent=lpfc target=X lun=1;
   d) Update the entry for the device in IBMtape.conf if needed, the current
entry in
IBMtape.conf is added up to target 255 with Lun 0 and 1.
For instance, add an entry for a mapped device with a traget 200 and lun 3
name=IBMtape class=scsi target=200 lun=3;
   e) Unload and reload IBMtape driver
   # /opt/IBMtape/tmd -s
   # rem_drv IBMtape
   # add_drv -m '* 0666 bin bin' IBMtape
   # /opt/IBMtape/tmd
   f) Display the configured devices information running /opt/IBMtape/tapelist
-l

- if you are using Sun branded Emuelx HBA driver -- emlxs with this HBA

4). Configure with Sun FC or SAS HBA
   a) Attach IBM tape devices on the host
   b) Install the appropriate version of Sun HBA driver
   c) Run # cfgadm -al to display the configuration between HBA and the tape
device
Run # cfgadm -al -o show_FCP_dev Ap_Id to show the medium changer
configuration with HBA
Run # cfgadm -c configure device to configure the tape device with the
HBA if needed
   d) Install the IBMtape tape driver running # pkgadd command.
   e) Add the following appropriate lines in /etc/driver_aliases
  IBMtape scsiclass,01.vIBM.pXXX
  IBMtape scsiclass,08.vIBM.pXXX

where 01 is the type of tape drive and 08 is the type of medium changer,
XXX is the product ID string in the standard inquiry data. In an example,
for IBM

   IBMtape scsiclass,08.vIBM.p3577-TL
   IBMtape scsiclass,08.vIBM.p3572-TL

   Note:
The entry is also added running # update_drv command on Solaris 8
(need patch 111804-03),
Solaris 9 and later version OS. For example,
# update_drv -av -i 'scsiclass,01.vIBM.pULT3580-TD2' IBMtape

   f) Reboot the system running # reboot -- -r
   g) Run # /opt/IBMtape/tapelist -l to display the configured tape devices
information

   Note:
All of the added entries will be removed by the operating system
automatically once IBMtape is
unloaded from the kernel running # pkgrm, rem_drv, or modunload commands.
We recommend the user
to backup these entries in a file, and re-enter the entries when you
upgrade IBMtape driver
before to run #pkgadd command.

i have only quick one: can i do lanfree backups from machine which
doesn't have storage agent installed ?

i mean another machine has sta installed and sees tsm tape drives as
 local ... and stuff ?

i was always confused with LANFreetcpserveraddress parameter which in my
sick logic tells me that LANfree server can be anywhere ...

 ... or am i babbling ?

 thanks for your time.

anyone has configured LanFree on Solaris10?
I'm doing this in our environment but stuck with getting the devices in the

rman/tdpo/lanfree monitoring question !

2009-02-25 Thread goc
hi all,
is there any (any) way to monitor backup speed via rman/tdpo/lanfree
method ... i'm really puzzled
here considering normal file level backups/transfers are really
transparent and stuff

all i see on storage agent is q ses which tells me how many gigs are
transferred in current session,
which is kind of stupid coz' i know it will end at 130GiB because of
estimated backup set size ...

in rman backup log i can see time in which one backup set was backed
up but i was thinking
on realtime monitoring , not event on host level via motoring fc ports
... or maybe on brocades/switches ?

ah.

the usual scripts of course don't work on STA ... and so on...

thanks in advance, i would really like to know how all of you are doing it

sta hpux 11.23
tsm 5.4.1
tdpo 5.4.1

Lanfree behaviour question

2008-06-05 Thread Robert Ouzen Ouzen
Hi to all

I have a TDP for Oracle version 5.3.3-0 on a linux machine RHEL3 u8 with Oracle

During the backup I got the following messages: (the TSM server version is

06/05/2008 02:05:14 ANR8302E (Session: 4481, Origin: NEWALEPHPROD_SA) I/O

But the backup continue with the same drive and tape and finish correctly, I
got the statistics of:

NEWALEPHPROD_ORA 6001.250 2008-06-05 02:03:14 00:48:30

The DBA of this server check the log message on the oracle side and looks O.K

The volume in the TSM side dismount correctly: 06/05/2008 03:01:43
ANR8325I Dismounting volume 14L2 - 10 minute mount retention expired.

But in the log around 1 / 2 minutes after I got this message:

06/05/2008 03:03:01 ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt2, error

The drive /dev/rmt2 in the TSM side is O.K I can work with it Did I need
to make some adjusting as maybe the retention time in the devclass or on the
linux side in some configuration files ???

Any advice what to do !

Hi, Abid,

Did you define paths on the library manager between the storage agent and
the drives it will use? For the Device parameter in the path definitions,
you need to use the tape drive device names as they appear on the client
machine.

Good luck and let us know how it's going,

LANfree issue

2008-04-02 Thread Bell, Charles (Chip)
Storage agent machine is Windows 2003 SP2, 64-bit. Client v 5.4.1.6, storage
agent version 5.4.2

TSM server is AIX 5.3, server v5.4.2.

Storage agent config seems to be correct, but the devices under device
manager will not start. I have updated them to the correct IBM device
drivers. Has anyone struggled with this before? I can see the library and
drives in the storage agent console, including the WWNs, serial numbers, etc.
The devices will show up in device manager, but will not start. The 'validate
lanfree' and 'q san' commands show things to be in order.

Is this a device driver issue, or what?

AIX/Linux Lpar, Vio Server and Lanfree

2008-03-28 Thread Francisco Molero
Hello,

We want to create several partitions controller by AIX/Linux Vio Server. I am
interesting in run lanfree backups and I am looking info about that.

Questions:

If I want to run lan free backup over a Lpar controlled by Vio Server, need I
to define a dedicated HBA for this LPar ?

Can I share a Hba for two Lpars and run lanfree, is it supported ?

Could anybody tell me where can I find docs about AIX/Linux/Lpar/Vio and TSM

as far as I know, not. VIO servers can only emulate/share disks, not
tapedevices. so you'll need dedicated HBAs for the LPARs that require
tape access.

Francisco,

How about installing a small TSM Server on one of your LPARs. It would be
a library management client to your main TSM server and back up itself and
the other LPARs across the virtual ethernet. The only local disk you would
need is the TSM DB and log, backups could go straight to tape just as if
it was a storage agent..

I just ran into a similar problem. It was the first time I dealt with
paths on a windows machine.
My problem was that I rebooted a couple times after the initial define
path and never set up persistent bindings.

You can either try and get SAN Discovery working, or set up persistent
bindings on your HBA driver.

Then work out the serial number/path mapping

Robert,

rc = 418 means that the Exchange Server is reporting a problem.
Check the TDPEXC.LOG file and the output of the operation.
It should provide more details on the Exchange Server error code.
You can also check the Windows Event Log on the Exchange Server.

2008-01-21 Thread Robert Ouzen Ouzen
Del,

Thanks for your reply , but just now after a lot of debugging I found that two
tapes was mismatch with serial number and the backup via Lanfree didn't
recognize the correct device and TSM automatically try to reconfigure the path .

I update the path with the correct number device (after matching the serial
number) and everything work now fine

Thanks again

Robert,

rc = 418 means that the Exchange Server is reporting a problem.
Check the TDPEXC.LOG file and the output of the operation.
It should provide more details on the Exchange Server error code.
You can also check the Windows Event Log on the Exchange Server.

Thanks,

Del

TDPO/LanFree setup questions

2007-11-05 Thread Richard Rhodes
Hi Everyone,

We're struggling on how to setup TDPO and LanFree. Not the mechanics on
making it work, but on the best way to use it.

We would like to do the following:

1) Oracle DB backups go LanFree straight to tape.
2) Archive logs go LAN to a disk pool, then migrated to tape.
3) Archive logs also go immediately sent to a offsite TSM instance (disk
pool) (lan).

If we set it up for lan to the disk pool, and then use the filesize option
to write big db files straight to tape, they still go
LAN. . . not LanFree. I read that TDPO/LanFree will honor incl/excl
options with different management classes. This
sounds good, but all the data is coming from RMAN/TDPO. I don't know what I
would use for a incl/excl for the
archive logs.

Also, we would like to get an immediate offsite copy of archive logs.
Again, we would like this offsite copy be
to a disk pool so as not to wait for tape mounts and drive contention. We
found a way to do this via a second
archive log destination with a completely separate rman setup to a offsite
TSM server. There didn't seem to be
a way in RMAN to send a archive log to multiple destinations, and then
delete the archive log.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Rick

Re: TDPO/LanFree setup questions

2007-11-05 Thread CAYE PIERRE
Hi,

You can find in the Data Protection for Oracle for UNIX and Linux Installation
and User's Guide (SC32-9064-02):

- Please note that the Tivoli Storage Manager client user options file (dsm.opt
by default) you must edit for Data Protection for Oracle is located in the
directory specified by the dsmi_orc_config option. If this option is not
specified, Data Protection for Oracle looks for this options file in the Data
Protection for Oracle installation directory.

- include
Add an include statement to the dsm.sys file (used by the Oracle node) when a
management class (other than the default management class) is defined within an
existing policy domain. This include statement binds the Oracle backup objects
to the management class that is defined for managing these objects. The include
statement uses the following naming convention:
/FilespaceName//ObjectName
The FORMAT parameter in the RMAN script can also be used to assist with object
naming. For example, if the FORMAT parameters (in the RMAN script) specified
the following values for databases and logs:
format 'DB_%u_%p_%c'
format 'LOG_%u_%p_%c'
The include statement in the dsm.sys file (used by the Oracle node) would be as
follows:
INCLUDE /adsmorc/.../DB* mgmtclassnameforDBs
INCLUDE /adsmorc/.../LOG* mgmtclassnameforLogs

Fw: TDPO/LanFree setup questions

2007-11-05 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis
Rick,

For the backups going LAN to your tape drives, and not LANFree, since you
are setup for LAN to your DASD pool, and initiating the session via LAN,
the LANFree agent won't be engaged, so when you spill over to tape, you're
still going over the LAN. You have to send directly to a sequential pool
(tape or sequential disk with Sanergy) to get LANFree to work.

Don't forget, you don't send data to storage pool, you're sending it to a
management class, which specifies the storagepool to use. So you can
direct the data to the appropriate location with INCLUDE statements.
Rather than cut/paste, here's the manual for TSM for Databases 5.4.1 for
Oracle on Unix and Linux: (Everyone know about the InfoCenter at:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/index.jsp ,don't
they???)

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/topic/com.ibm.itsmfd.doc/ab5u0003.pdf

Page 48 (64 in the PDF file) has examples for what you want to do. With
the management classes configured on your TSM Server, you can have backups
LANFree to a tape pool and Logs go LAN to DASD.

Now, for Want #3, look at Page 52 in the manual (68 of the PDF file) and
see if that will do what you want it to. It's not a separate TSM Server,
but it could be a storage pool on the local TSM Server that is located
elsewhere, and could use Virtual Volumes, if you so desire.

Sorry, too busy...

so you want to define two nodes, each one using a different STA, and all that
on the same machine...

I'd never configure two sta on the same machine and it is not possible.
There are no way to use two different base directory for your sta.
You can't indicate an other option file than the default one.
And, last, the sta create a lock file on the sta base directory, so it is not
possible, even if you script something to bluff the sta, to start a second
one...
