Re: [Alsa-user] can't get mic to work on snd-intel8x0

2008-02-26 Thread Daniel Sanabria
Do you have more than one soundcard? have you try -c 1, -c 2 etc ...?

also I've read we must have the IGAin control all the way up to 100 ... you
can change this with aumix.

But we still need to control the AC97 level ... hope someone is able to see
this and give us a hand.

Daniel,

I have already looked at that setup (see earlier posts) and it seems to
be fine - what are you getting at? I was responding to your original
post about a lack of an AC97 control and demonstrating it with the
results of:

amixer -c 0

ie, the only thing I see with AC97 in it is:

Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 3

Re: [Alsa-user] can't get mic to work on snd-intel8x0

2008-02-16 Thread Daniel Sanabria
Hi All,

Here's an update in the situation ...

When I do arecord -d 10 -f S16_LE -r 48000 -c 2 -t wav foobar.wav and I
literally put one of the speaker at full volume in one of my ears I can hear
a very vere low volume version of myself.

Here's the Kmix settings currently in use (kmix is what I'm using to control
my sound settings but any suggestions are more than welcome):

Output: No problems here as I can listen to music and sounds without
problems.

Input: Mic is unmuted (bright green led) and selected for recording (bright
red led) with slider all the way to the top. Capture is selected for
recording (bright red light) with slider all the way to the top however
every time I quit kmix I can see that the slider gets lowered to the minimum
so I'm not sure if my changes are being saved. Everything else here is muted
and not selected for recording.

Switches: Mic Boost, External Amplifier and Stereo Mic are all enabled
(bright yellow led) and the rest is disabled. Sorround Jack Mode=Shared, Mic
Select=Mic2, Mono Output Select=Mix, Channel Mode=2ch, Downmix=Off,
_REFOUT=High-Z

I feel I'm a bit closer to get this solved and it's the only thing that's
stopping me from doing a full migration from windows to linux at home (all
right, I'll have to sort out the webcam as well but I asked my wife for some
credit here)

Any comments that could help me to boost my mic volume are highly
appreciated.

Daniel

That's always a good sign.

 _REFOUT=High-Z

High-Z is high impedence(Mega Ohms). Generally meant for guitars that plug
directly in for recording. Put that on a mic and if you don't have awesome
gain, it's gonna make that signal very weak. If you can change that setting,
then do. That is if you're not playing electric guitar as the input source.

$ aumix -q

That's what I normally use to show me my settings. Mic + iGain need to have
values other than 0. At least that how it used to work for me. Aumix doesn't
seem to play well with multiple soundcards. So I don't use it much anymore.

$ amixer scontents

A bit verbose, but it should give you some details. Check out the Capture,
Mic, and Mic Boost settings.

$ alsactl store (or restore)

To save or restore whatever settings you've adjusted. My distro(debian) checks
for these stored settings before it'll even think of restoring them from some
other app like aumix. Basically if /etc/asound.state exists, mixer settings
are restored from there.

$ alsamixer -c 0

To adjust mixer settings the alsa way(F1 for hotkey list). For some settings,
it's the only way to access them. At least that was the case for some
headphone jacks on dell laptops.

What type of mic are we talking? Electret type mics(the kind that most PC
style mics seem to be/use) need a voltage(called a bias voltage, or plug-in
power for voice recorders). Without the voltage you need a battery box. Set
it to 3.7V, if you can. 2.25 V should also work. 0V and High-Z would be my

 I hear sounds fine but my mic is not working (I use a record to test

 me the following details:

 Vendor: Intel Corporation
 Model: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (IHC6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller
 Module: snd-intel8x0

 What I noticed is that in Kmix under the input tab if try to put the
 capture slider to the top it gets down to 0 every time I quit the app.
 Also and since the PC is Dell Dimension 5000 I have two mic connectors
 (one at the front and the other at the back of the PC) and they appear
 to be listed in kmix as mic1 and mic2 but none of them is working.

 My /etc/modprobe.conf below:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# cat /etc/modprobe.conf
 alias eth0 b44
 alias scsi_hostadapter libata
 alias scsi_hostadapter1 ata_piix
 alias scsi_hostadapter2 usb-storage
 alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
 options snd-card-0 index=0
 options snd-intel8x0 index=0
 alias wlan0 ath5k

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# rpm -qa | grep -i alsa

 bluez-utils-alsa-3.20-4.fc8

 I have no ~/.asoundrc ...

 Any help is extremely appreciated.

 Thanks in advance,

 Daniel

[Alsa-user] can't get mic to work on snd-intel8x0

2008-02-14 Thread Daniel Sanabria
Hi All,

I'm very new to ALSA and in fact I've never had the need to change the
default setting before. However in this occasion and with my desktop PC I've
trying to configure my mic in order to use programs like skype but no luck.
I'm running fedora 8 and KDE 3.5.

I hear sounds fine but my mic is not working (I use a record to test it and
all I hear is silence). The soundcard detection utility gives me the
following details:

Vendor: Intel Corporation
Model: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (IHC6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0

What I noticed is that in Kmix under the input tab if try to put the capture
slider to the top it gets down to 0 every time I quit the app. Also and
since the PC is Dell Dimension 5000 I have two mic connectors (one at the
front and the other at the back of the PC) and they appear to be listed in
kmix as mic1 and mic2 but none of them is working.

My /etc/modprobe.conf below:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# cat /etc/modprobe.conf

I have no ~/.asoundrc ...

Any help is extremely appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
