Re: [Alsa-user] Schiit USB audio dac

2014-04-19 Thread Rita
Chris,

Good news. I moved the USB from front of PC to back of PC and I don't get
flapping. I am using VLC which I select the audio device and I get no flaps
whatsoever.

My PC is a HPAMD 64bit. It does not have external hub. My USB keyboard is
still attached :-)
Running :
kernel, 3.11.0-19-generic.
alsa-base(1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu4)
VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower (revision 2.0.8a-0-g68cf50b)

I am still playing music from a different HDisk partition (ext3).

BTW, pulse audio is running on my distribution. I hope thats not down
sampling my wavs.

This is great news. Debugging hardware is the worst! I'm glad it
wasn't your Schiit.

As long as it works!

A few thoughts for you.

You might want to turn your .wav files into .flac files. Uses less
space, accomodates tags, etc. No loss of quality though I have read
claims that .wav files sound better (not going there myself).

Also, if you want all your sound to go through the Schiit you probably
want pulse to control it. As far as I know (anyone reading this who
knows better please correct me), pulse picks one target output
resolution and resamples everything to that. So if your use is
mostly 44.1kHz/16bit, then you should set pulse to use that as its
output so that your music doesn't get resampled.

If you are like me, and you have a bunch of files at varying rates and
bit depths, then you probably don't want to use pulse; you probably
want a music player to talk right through to Alsa.

I am not sure about getting pulse and a music player to share the same
device; I guess you just have to try.

It may be possible to use pure Alsa with mixer enabled and push pulse
out of the way; if you want that, I guess you just have to try!

Whatever you learn, please consider writing about your findings back
on this list so that others can learn from your experience!

Good luck

I will get Guayadeque a try. I was using VLC player and selected the sound
card.

This doesn't seem correct. Can you determine the specific behaviour that
triggers it? For instance, maybe some Firefox plugin like Flash is getting
 the system sound card?

Also, I am running pulseaudio with alsa. Should I just run Alsa?

 What is your intended use?

Do you want all PC sound to go through the Schiit, or do you want just
music, or music and movies? Do you want to play sound files at various
 (native) resolutions?

For example, I use my Bifrost to play music through my stereo but I don't
want system sounds to appear there. Also pulse resamples various sound
sources to a standard rate and bit depth. So I use a music player that
communicates directly with Alsa - I like Guayadeque - and let pulse manage
 my system sound card.

Ok. I don't use Chrome (-ium) so I can't comment on that.

My intended use is for a HiFi music system. I have flac files and I would
like to use them with my DAC and Amp.

Do you have to do anything with ~/.asoundrc? BTW, I am not running pulse.

I have never had to fuss with .asoundrc

I will get Guayadeque a try. I was using VLC player and selected the sound
 card.

For me, Guayadeque is a great solution for my laptop + AQ DragonFly +
headphones.

With Guayadeque you select View Preferences Playback

There is an output device combo box. You set it to Alsa and then
enter the name of your device. For example with my DragonFly I use

plughw:CARD=DragonFly,DEV=0

Ideally you should use hw to avoid any transformations, but in my
(limited) experience cards tend to support some but not all relevant
bit depths and therefore plughw is often needed.

You can experiment with this best using aplay - get some sample files
from the 2L website for instance, convert them to wav, and then see if
you can play back both 16bit and 24bit wav files through hw. If so,
great, you are on your way; if not, you need plughw.

Also, I may be wrong but I think the Modi does not support 176.4 nor
192 kHz files. If you expect to play these, you may also have to use
plughw to force on-the-fly downsampling. Anyway the thing to do is
try and of course please report your results back to the list so that
others can benefit from your experience!

I should also mention that a better solution for me for the desktop +
Bifrost + hi-fi is mpd plus various different clients, both on the
desktop machine itself and on my Android phone. The ability to
control the music queue by remote is quite nice. mpd, like
Guayadeque, can easily be configured to pass files through directly to
Alsa. However, if you intend to control your music queue through your
desktop, Guayadeque's UI and features seem to me to be the best
available. Its smart playlist is particularly good, at least with my
music collection; and it comes with a great list of internet radio
stations.

Finally, there seem to be some people out there working on a version
of mpd that will handle DSD files, so if you ever decide to buy a Loki
to go with your Modi...

Rita, I have a Schiit Bifrost but I run it over TOSLINK.

In any case, is it possible that your Pulse Audio setup is interfering
with your Alsa connection? Can you disable Pulse and try again just
to check?

What kernel are you running?

What happens when you use aplay to play a file, especially through the
hw or plughw interface?

That is a really old kernel. I had no luck with that with my Bifrost.

Any chance you could try a newer one? Boot from a live CD, for instance?

 13.10 has kernel 3.11 I think, and 14.04 has 3.13.

It could also be a bad USB connection. Try it with the shortest USB
cable that will work for you (= 2m regardless), and with the DAC
plugged directly into the computer (i.e. no external USB hub, or KVM or
whatever between the DAC and the computer).

The time between disconnects seems to vary from 1 to 3 seconds, so it
sounds like something flaky. Can you try it in a different port on the
Ubuntu machine? If that does nothing, then it's back to Chris's
suggestion of a newer kernel...

The reason I'm harping on a newer kernel is that one of the kind devs
spent quite a lot of time helping me debug the CMEDIA USB interface
that the Schiit uses and we were at a much later kernel than 3.2
