[android-developers] About System broadcast behavior.

2013-04-29 Thread h . sasaki . mbsd . jp
Hello,

I wanted to create an app to detect that it has remove the SD card.
But, I disinclined to received broadcast action which spoofed from malware.
I tried to limit received by "android:exported=false" with in manifest.
This filter action is android.intent.action.MEDIA_UNMOUNTED action(this
action is not protected-broadcast).
I thought system action can't received also whether not being blocked by
exported=false.

However, it was able to receive the android.intent.action.MEDIA_UNMOUNTED
action correctly from Android system.

In other words, Can I receive the system broadcast that has been specified
"exported = false" by manifest?

Regards,
Hiroshi

[android-developers] Migrating existing app to Google Maps API v2

2012-12-03 Thread JP
I started migrating an Android project from the old Google Maps API to
v2. Or an attempt at that, rather.
A few issues with the brand new documentation aside*), there seems to
be a substantial mismatch in the architecture, and as a result, the
vast amount of API calls and classes are not available any more?
(Somebody correct me if I am wrong). After switching the Java imports
to com.google.android.gms.maps.*, I am missing MapActivity, GeoPoint,
RecticleDrawMode and Overlay. Sure there are more. Right now a
migration to v2 seems like a pretty hopeless undertaking for anything
but the most trivial projects. Or am I completely missing the boat
here?

*)
1. Eclipse: File -> Import -> Existing... does not work: As should be
the case for release, there are no Eclipse project files in the Google
Play Services SDK, so I used New -> Project -> Android Project from
Existing Code
2. Eclipse: Reference to google-play-services_lib as a library project
results in a red cross in the referencing project properties and class
references from the project source into com.google.android.gms do not
resolve. Workaround: Include google-play-services.jar as a JAR file
reference
3. A web search for "com.google.android.gms.maps" on Google finds a
link (https://developers.google.com/commerce/wallet/sdk/android/
reference/com/google/android/gms/maps/package-summary) but no content
there

Update.
I checked a number of Android Market-published APKs way back, and it
appears the APK export added the "offending" permissions
(WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and READ_PHONE_STATE) for
quite some time already. Only recently Android Market / Google Play seems
to have picked up on these, hence the app going over the cliff for a
monster amount (I figure) of devices.

After digging, that lead me to find this:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1747178/android-permissions-phone-calls-read-phone-state-and-identity
Turns out advancing to min-sdk level 4 in the manifest file resolves the
issue as the permissions above are no longer added.
Buh buy, Cupcake. Well, I can live with losing G1 owners that never updated
to Donut.

Would be *nice* though to have meaningful error messages in Android Market.

[android-developers] Google Play adding permission requests after upload. -> Lose reach, existing users lose upgrade path

2012-11-22 Thread JP
After not having touched it since July, I've updated one of my apps in
Google Play the other day and noticed that it was filtered out from a bunch
of devices I use for testing. There are no new features that would require
any new permissions, and the target-sdk remains at 11. (min-sdk level 3)

Turns out that Google Play in its infinite wisdom added permission requests
that aren't required for the app, at least not for the devices I've tested
it on over the years. BTW, this becomes obvious only after expanding the
version in the APK panel of the old publisher console, because only the old
console interface posts a warning about the new permission set.

With that, not only do I lose a substantial amount of reach. Even worse
perhaps, many users that already have the app installed based on the
original permissions, now fall off the upgrade path, I suppose. I'm not
going to rewrite the whole thing and go through the exercise trying to
figure out which Android SDK calls trigger user permissions adds by Google
Play. What a mess.

Anybody know a solution?

BTW, using the old interface, reactivating the July version results in the
following "error": "New APK version is lower than previous APK version."
(Well duh) and I can't delete any new upload, old interface or new. So I
can't even switch back to any of the old versions.

[android-developers] Re: Problem in larger xml parsing with SOAP web service

2012-08-16 Thread JP
This looks to me like you're trying to skin existing code over the Android
platform?
In my experience, DOM (tree parsing in general) isn't so great in the
mobile environment as you have to load the tree structure up front to get
to that last piece of data that you actually might be interested in.
In an ideal world, you would probably want to break this down and implement
the web services and SOAP elements on a web server. Your mobile app then
queries this web server through small interactions. Using stream parsing
and perhaps JSON in place of XML.

On Aug 6, 4:39 pm, Jonathan S wrote:

There's a few more steps:
3) Add the following MIME type to your web server(s):
application/vnd.android.package-archive
to go with the .apk file type
4 a) If your users are in a BYOD situation: Have an answer for users
who bought devices from a carrier/vendor that doesn't support
sideloading. For example, send them back to the carrier/vendor to have
it enabled, which of course doesn't happen. What ever you do, don't
make it your problem.
4 b) If you get to decide which devices are purchased, make sure your
vendor(s)/service provider(s) support sideloading. Have multiple
vendors lined up in case one has a change of heart so you can switch
quickly.

Re: [android-developers] Requesting Gmail atom feed with auth token from AccountManager

2012-07-30 Thread JP

Thank you both, I figured it out.
Nikolay was correct in scrutinizing the use of "mail" aus AUTH_TOKEN_TYPE.
There is some (old?) documentation that lists this as an alias for Gmail.
This alias even returns a token, which in turn does not work when used to
authenticate with the atom feed.
So I switched the AUTH_TOKEN_TYPE to
"oauth2:https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/";. The token from that scope
worked, right out of the box.
The HTTP GET works like this now:

HttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpGet method = new
HttpGet("https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/unread";);
method.setHeader("Bearer " + token);
HttpResponse response;
try {
response = client.execute(method);
} catch (Exception e) { }
// Now parse response as normal.

[android-developers] Requesting Gmail atom feed with auth token from AccountManager

2012-07-29 Thread JP
I am trying to authenticate with the Gmail atom feed using the
authentication token of the Gmail account, obtained from AccountManager.

I have no problem pulling the authentication token for a Google Account
registered on the device, using AccountManagergetAuthToken() with the
authTokenType "mail", but the authentication token does not register with
the atom feed. I've played with a few variations, but all I get is a 401 /
Unauthorized response from Google.
Basically, I've tried to GET https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/unread
adding in a "Authorization" header item with "Bearer ", but that didn't work.
Any ideas where the disconnect is?

[android-developers] Re: Block Apk File Read.

2012-07-25 Thread JP

Which would create an incentive to forgo the install-on-SD-card
option, because the external SD card can always be mounted on a non-
Android host and APKs pulled from the card that way. Google fought
tooth to nail to not install apps on external SD card until they
finally caved, and now we'd be looking at moving in the other
direction? Bad idea in my opinion. Let's rather see how APK encryption
in Jelly Bean is going to work out.

Well we are talking corporate laptops that will not go on a corp. network
running Linux. Plus no Outlook and so forth. Well I suppose I'll keep the
Nexus 7 dangling until ASUS or Google make the drivers available proper.

My personal development notebooks are a different story. These are a couple
Thinkpad T42p's, in the top of the line configuration including the
1600x1200 UXGA display. The last that IBM made before Lenovo took over. Oh
yeah they came out in 2003, but ideal to run Eclipse or any other ole IDE
and quick still with a replacement HD. But will Linux and the new UIs there
(Unity?) run properly on these things? Hmmm... I suppose I'll stick to XP.
That said, the first vendor that's going to be coming out with an Ultrabook
sporting an UXGA 1600x1200 matte display is going to get my business. Dell
perhaps as they're contemplating rolling dev notebooks featuring Ubuntu?
The Intel Ultrabook reference design has a 1600x900 display so it's not too
far fetched to think UXGA again one would think.

2012-07-20 Thread JP
I figured somebody was going to offer that.
I got a Mac, but this is about my Windows boxen where I need this to
work on Windows.

But while ranting (;->). The part that sucks with Macs is that Apple
drops older versions of OS X like hot potatoes.
If I know a certain application that I rely on is going to break FUBAR
with Lion or I don't like buying into the whole backwards swipy thing
because I switch between computers a bunch, well tough luck buddy
staying on the XCode update wagon.
So I got to have two of them or dual boot or whatever, and
methinksnot... How about it just work, oh nevermind.

[android-developers] JellyBean systrace in cygwin problem, does not write trace.html

2012-07-20 Thread JP
Using systrace, I am trying to create a system trace file as
demonstrated in the Google I/O session "For Butter or Worse".
Configuration: Galaxy Nexus / JellyBean 4.1.1 (JR003C).
Windows 7 SP 1 with Cygwin and Python installed, which is different
from the demo in the session where they use a Mac.
When I run ./systrace, I get a binary dump in the console and a
trace.html is not written. I tried to pipe the output to a trace.html
file, but the output is not HTML. Below the output (abbreviated).
Anybody have any ideas?

$ ./systrace.py

[android-developers] OEM-Official ADB USB Driver support (rant)

2012-07-20 Thread JP
One of the most vexing problems over the years: Official ADB USB
driver support by OEMs.
With the exception of a few, every new device coming out seems to be
missing the ADB USB drivers. Even Nexus devices.
And once out, they may not even be available "naked" from the official
source, as they should be.
I got a Nexus 7 the other day and there still doesn't seem to be OEM-
official ADB USB driver support? Sure enough I got the Asus drivers
installed that cover the Transformer Prime, but the Nexus 7 draws a
blank. Or am I missing something (discount XDA developer's)?

[android-developers] Re: Google Maps API/ Custom Application that use Google Maps/Navigation

2012-07-19 Thread JP
I'd try calling up the Google Maps app via Intent first. See if it
fits the UI flow and provides what you need. If so, I would run with
it. Reason: Except for being pulled though new API levels, the Maps
API has been pretty much abandoned. By now, it is roughly a couple
years behind what Google Maps can do.

Huh, correct in my book. Although it was always supposed to be
understood that the underlying graphics engine today is running CPU
bound only, which makes it somewhat pointless in its actual
implementation. In the documentation, this goes easily overlooked.

---

Just a few short months ago I've attended a presentation by Romain Guy
and one of his colleagues that praised Renderscript as *the* way
forward, in my impression anyways. It would probably be a good idea
for Google to clarify what deprecation of the graphics engine means
going forward. Perhaps a new graphics engine is in the works, that
actually utilizes the GPU. Perhaps using deprecation was just a poor
choice of word?

Outch. I went and checked a link to one of the older posts on the
developer blog; some of which I find highly useful. The post about
backwards compatibility, for example.

This stackoverflow question:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4873827/android-backward-code-compatibility
includes a link to the original post here:

Which is gone without auto-forward.

 What a fail. From the company that built its business on
hyperlinks. Oh well. At least the skydivers didn't crash into the

[android-developers] Re: Convert from Byte array to Pdf format

2012-06-06 Thread JP

Michael points in the right direction. You need write permission to /
sdcard, which is known as external storage.
Here's the documentation:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesExternal
You also need to add the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission to the app
manifest.

[android-developers] Re: App talking to native ARM binary via sockets

2012-06-06 Thread JP
I've done this the other direction only, native to Dalvik.
Difficult to say much with what you've provided, and in principle.
At any rate, one thing of note is the server address 10.0.2.2 that you
use.
I use localhost, to remove any uncertainty about where the network
address might be known, or not. Try 127.0.0.0 instead.
Also, perhaps change the port number, just to be save nobody else is
sitting on the (likely) default port of your server.

With the kind of support we're seeing, the answer is probably: ain't

Anyway, just sayin'

[android-developers] Re: Application's resource files' protection

2012-05-31 Thread JP

Correct me if I am wrong folks, any encryption key and method that
would be used to decrypt resource files would be obfuscated by
Proguard, assuming the key is kept in the Java source, no?
So OP would use key-and-method to encrypt resource files in the
development environment and package the encrypted resource files with
the apk. At runtime, extract the resource, decrypt using the key and
go.

BTW, this:
> Download them from the Internet only on demand, and only ever hold them in
> RAM.
doesn't help much. The URLs of resource files could easily be packet-
sniffed when the device is running on WiFi, and used to milk the
resource files off of the OP's web server.

[android-developers] Re: turning mobile data off and on again

2012-05-25 Thread JP
Programmatically, what ever ConnectivityManager offers. This requires
proper permission (define in manifest)
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManager.html

Then there's the option to send a user to Android's connectivity
settings; like so:
Intent myIntent = new
Intent(Settings.ACTION_WIRELESS_SETTINGS);
startActivity(myIntent);

[android-developers] Re: Can I launch an Android Application from Linux service?

2012-05-25 Thread JP

Interesting question. I would think no, at least to directly, because
as a "Linux service" (process), your process is running outside of
Android's Activity management, so sending/receiving Intents to trigger
activities such as launching an Android app wouldn't work.

One approach would be to try to integrate the Intent library functions
into your process and attach the process to the Android layer somehow;
not that I knew of though. Extracting this kind of stuff from the
Android framework would be expected to be messy to say the least.

So you'll fall back to building something yourself. Create an Android
Service that acts as a server to your Linux process and use the Socket
library for IPC. I've used that approach to send data from a process
back to an Android Activity; worked well. In your scenario, the Linux
process writes to the socket which releases the Android service to
send out an Intent to launch the app in question. Only problem that I
see from far is that Android doesn't "like" long running services,
with Google pontificating how these weren't needed in the first place
(not). I'd give it a shot though, trying out a "sticky" service that
keeps hanging around, justifiably so, as your Android Service wouldn't
be expected to consume much in the way of resources.

Read the accelerometer values. They should be distinct enough to
conclude the device orientation with confidence.

Try the Douglas-Peucker algorithm. There is an open-source
implementation of the Douglas-Peucker algorithm in Java in the
MyTracks Android project, which is licensed under Apache 2.0:
http://code.google.com/p/mytracks/source/browse/MyTracks/src/com/google/android/apps/mytracks/util/LocationUtils.java
Its in the method "decimate()".

[android-developers] Re: Per Google Terms of Service: Am I permitted to...?

2012-05-13 Thread JP

Terms of Service aren't the law... you're a bit overly cautious here.
Although a lawyer could provide an answer of course.

But to move to OP's original question. I want to point to section 8.7
(c) and it looks as if dispatch and fleet management that's critical
to a core business is not permitted? Let's say displaying vehicle
icons on the map would violate this section, one would think.
My advise: Check out OpenStreetMaps instead.
Oh while at it, also research what IP holding firm ArrivalStar has
been doing the last few years. (hint: patent trolling owners of
dispatch and fleet management systems)

Also, is this going to cover resources, finally? Just do drive the

Re: [android-developers] Reading ROM version through code

And as we all know... the trees do not grow into the sky ;-)

This morning, I tried this with a few Sony Ericsson phones I had at the
office. And they do not return anything when I try to get the
ro.product.version property. I still get the ro.build.fingerprint, but
nothing else.

Does anyone know if there is a place I can read the different handset
providers property names? A wiki somewhere...?

Re: [android-developers] Reading ROM version through code

2012-04-29 Thread JP
Hey guys...

This code works... although I'm not that keen on it, since it is definitely
not part of the jars available. But it works:

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState)
{
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
TextView arch = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.arch);
TextView name = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.name);
TextView version = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.version);
TextView roversion = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.roversion);
TextView rofingerprint = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rofingerprint);
arch.setText("os.arch: " + System.getProperty("os.arch"));
name.setText("os.name: " + System.getProperty("os.name"));
version.setText("os.version: " + System.getProperty("os.version"));
roversion.setText("ro.product.version: " +
getProp("ro.product.version", "Not found"));
rofingerprint.setText("ro.build.fingerprint: " +
getProp("ro.build.fingerprint", "Not found"));

}

private String getProp(String prop, String defaultVal)
{
String line = defaultVal;
try {
Process ifc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("getprop " + prop);
BufferedReader bis = new BufferedReader(new
InputStreamReader(ifc.getInputStream()));
line = bis.readLine();
ifc.destroy();
} catch (java.io.IOException e) {
}

return line;
}

This returns:

TextView arch = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.arch);
TextView name = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.name);
TextView version = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.version);
TextView roversion = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.roversion);
TextView rofingerprint = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rofingerprint);
arch.setText("os.arch: " + System.getProperty("os.arch"));
name.setText("os.name: " + System.getProperty("os.name"));
version.setText("os.version: " + System.getProperty("os.version"));
roversion.setText("ro.product.version: " +
System.getProperty("ro.product.version"));
rofingerprint.setText("ro.build.fingerprint: " +
System.getProperty("ro.build.fingerprint"));

Which gave me this output on my HTC Legend:
os.arch : armv6l
os.name: Linux
os.version: 2.6.32.17-g30929af
ro.product.version: 3.15.405.3

I tried using this code:

TextView arch = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.arch);
TextView name = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.name);
TextView version = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.version);
TextView roversion = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.roversion);

version.setText("os.version: " + System.getProperty("os.version"));
roversion.setText("ro.product.version: " +
System.getProperty("ro.product.version"));
rofingerprint.setText("ro.build.fingerprint: " +
System.getProperty("ro.build.fingerprint"));

Which gave me this output on my HTC Legend:
os.arch : armv6l
os.name: Linux
os.version: 2.6.32.17-g30929af
ro.product.version: null
ro.build.fingerprint: null

[android-developers] Re: Unable to use ndk-gdb

Hmm... isn't the answer in the error message? Open jni/Android.mk in
your project, jump rto line 317 and use a number to represent the API
level, methinks.
API levels here: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html

[android-developers] Re: how to get the average speed with GPS android

2012-04-23 Thread JP

1. Register a location listener for GPS
2. Request GPS location/dataset at 1s (for greatest accuarcy) interval
3. For each location update, retrieve the data element that contains
the device speed
4. Use a moving average algorithm to calculate average speed. A
reference design to maintain the moving average, variance and standard
deviation of a measurement can be found in "Knuth, The Art of Computer
Programming, Vol. 2, 3rd edition"

No, as I stated to begin with this isn't what I am looking for. This
returns "2.2" in my case, and this is the Android version, not the ROM

[android-developers] Reading ROM version through code

2012-04-17 Thread JP
Hi guys,

I am trying to read the ROM version, and displaying it in my app. I am
NOT talking about the information available from the
android.os.Build.*; namespace. This gives me the Android OS version
numbers.

I am looking for a way to display the ROM version. Most commonly this
is the software version of the ROM that a carrier will ship with the
phones they sell, and bundle a ton of useless apps they want all
their customers to have.

I just can't find anywhere this information has been documented?!?

Thanks,
JP

There was one last update back about maybe one and half years ago when
the font sizes were updated for readability on the higher res screens.
At least we're not getting charged for it unlike the online users of

[android-developers] Re: Correct unit of Sensor.getPower() ?

2012-03-14 Thread JP
Sorry Lew, you have no clue (outch, I just couldn't resist,
apologies). I believe you honestly try to help out here, so props for
that.

Understand that direct battery voltage isn't used for pretty much
anything in a mobile device. It's all stepped to the appropriate
levels. Also, you wrongfully make an assumption that a sensor would
run all by itself until the battery charge is depleted. Long story
short, the battery bankshot isn't going to work, like, at all.
So that was a strikeout... Just to be clear: The unit of power (that's
what I am interested in) is VA, the unit of current is A (sayeth the
trusty documentation), which is incorrect.

Sigh. On a sidenote. Not suggesting Lew you did - is this what we're
getting when folks listen to the likes of Peter Thiel? Stay in school
kids please and get an education.

[android-developers] Correct unit of Sensor.getPower() ?

2012-03-14 Thread JP
The Android documentation
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/hardware/Sensor.html#getPower%28%29
defines the units of sensor power as mA. That's milliAmps, which is a
unit of electric current, not power. Can anybody in the know clarify
the units delivered by getPower(), or confirm that this is indeed
electrical current (somewhat less useful)?

As far as I know, Android just passes through what it gets from the
GPS receiver. The Android version makes no difference. What typically
helps is to be on WiFi or have be on a carrier so you can get to a
first GPS fix (faster). That method is called A-GPS.

[android-developers] Re: Preference text item height

2012-02-07 Thread JP
If anyone is interested in the answer, then I found out that I had to
override onCreateView() instead. Here is the code:

@Override
protected View onCreateView(ViewGroup parent) {
LinearLayout layout = new LinearLayout(getContext());

LinearLayout.LayoutParams params1 = new
LinearLayout.LayoutParams(
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT);

TextView view = new TextView(getContext());
view.setText(textToDisplay);
view.setGravity(Gravity.CENTER);
view.setLayoutParams(params1);

layout.setPadding(15, 5, 10, 5);

layout.addView(view);
return layout;
}

This means that I don't need the XML Fragment and I don't need to
override the getView() method. Now everything works as I want it
to :-)

[android-developers] Preference text item height

2012-02-06 Thread JP
Hi guys,

I have created an app that also contains a preference activity, that
uses the xml/preferences.xml file.

Apart from the regular controls, I also want to include some
explanatory text, that isn't part of any of the control summaries.

I haven't found any good way of doing this, so I decided to create my
own preference control. This uses a layout fragment, that looks like
this

[CODE]

[/CODE]

I have then created a java class that extends
[B]android.preference.Preference[/B] and in the contructors set:

[CODE]this.setWidgetLayoutResource(R.layout.preferences_textview_fragment);
[/CODE]

This works fine... only the text is too long to fit in the preference
item. The item does not grow with the amount of text I write. It stays
fixed.

I then tried to override the getView() method like this, but that
didn't make any difference.

[CODE]@Override
public View getView(final View convertView, final ViewGroup
parent) {
final View v = super.getView(convertView, parent);
final int height = AbsListView.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT;
final int width = AbsListView.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT;
final AbsListView.LayoutParams params = new
AbsListView.LayoutParams(height, width);
v.setLayoutParams(params );
return v;
}[/CODE]

Can anyone help me out here and tell me what I am doing wrong... apart
from wanting to put legal text in the preference section?

All help is appreciated!

Jay

[android-developers] Re: Should I use Action bars

2012-02-06 Thread JP
I've recently fitted my apps that have a menu with action bar. The end
result: Running on Gingerbread and earlier, I keep the existing menu
structure, no change, but on HC and beyond the apps now sport the ole'
menu items in action bar form instead. So I have the cake and eat it
too.
If you are starting from scratch, I'd recommend you approach it as
follows: Develop towards a menu structure as if ActionBar had never
happened, with one exception: think which items you'd later want to
show in the action bar. You'll need compelling icons for that.
When the "old school" menu is in place, add the relevant tags and
hooks to turn the menu items into action bar items when the app runs
on HC and later. Depending on how far back you need compatibility, you
may have to use reflection to mask away methods introduced with
ActionBar that previously didn't exist. That's the part that stinks,
especially if you didn't sink you teeth into it before. There's an
older blog entry that explains how to do that:
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/backward-compatibility-for-android.html

Subversion, Mercurial or Git. Depends which source control system was
selected when the project was created.
You need to be a project member to be able to access the code with

[android-developers] Re: Android fragmentation study

2012-01-12 Thread JP

Focusing on the OS/API evolution here, as brought into play by the OP.
Out of all areas that cause developers headaches, the evolution of the
API along the succession of OS releases must be the least of our
worries. Through wrapper classes and reflection, newer features like
TTS or ActionBar are quite easy to to get a grip on. Not sure what the
dustup is about, this is virtually a non issue, comparatively
speaking, IMHO.

No offense, but from far it looks like neither your task sponsor
(boss?) or you have a clue what you're up against... Have you heard of
PCI?
At any rate though, not to discourage or anything, and considering
you've got to start somewhere...
As you've already found, there's the likes of Intuit, Square and
VeriFone out there. Their business is the kind of financial
transaction you are tasked with, and they have more (Verifone) or less
(Square) solid systems in place. It would seem unlikely you'll see an
API that would enable others to compete with them, but they might be
open to partnering. Ask them (or have your task sponsor ask them,
rather). Unless you have the time and resources to go down the path of
developing a CC reader and everything that goes along with it (think
PCI certification), partnering with one of these guys would be the
only viable option for you, IMHO anyways.
If you really really want to soldier on by yourself, you could go for
Square's reader for now. These are sold like candy, i.e. without
distribution control and sanctions, and have no encryption. Your API
in a sense would be based on the audio of the CC swipe coming in
through the headphone jack. Demodulate it into a bitstream and then
decode that into credit card number and expiration date. This would be
a difficult but straightforward exercise, because Square's reader does
not encrypt the unencrypted data on the magnetic CC strips. You do
risk however getting shut down by regulatory action down the road,
because you're building on a security hole that's so big you could fly
a jumbo jet through it, so there's a good chance these readers will go
away one day, leaving you high and dry.

As TreKing points out... with the built-in GPS - not a chance. For a
series of reasons, mostly however because the inside of a coach is
unfavorable to GPS reception. My recommendation would be to acquire a
professional high precision GPS receiver, install it on the roof, and
connect/pair it to the Android device through USB or BT. BT will be
somewhat sketchy though. Then read and parse out the NMEA string,
voila.

Use a byte buffer as Miguel suggested. Extract byte by byte (or long
by long).
You'll have to deal with the little endian / big endian problem
regardless of the language/stack you chose. If you have the latitude,
don't use binary...

Not so stellar advise. As Kristopher points out, the Java Socket API

Works in Java just like it does in C, with some added convenience
functions that cut down on the amount of code you have to lay down.
Just don't apply a Java Reader to your binary stream; it may hang up
the Reader.

[android-developers] Many Widgets in one layout

2011-12-15 Thread JP
Hi,

I'm really new to Android programming, so this question may be
obvious, but still I can't find a way to do it: I'm working on a
layout where the user have to enter many data about a person (name,
address, birthdate, etc). I'm capturing this information through
EditText widgets. I added them to a ScrollView, but when I run the
layout, a bunch of them overlap on the last row of the screen.
Obviously my idea is to have them one beneath the other and that the
user can be able to scroll down to continue the entering of data.. How
can I accomplish this task? Do I have to use more than one layout or
any other kind of widget?

Thanks in advance!

Regards

[android-developers] Honeycomb screen rotation: hook to full completion

2011-12-12 Thread JP
Hi all,
I am trying to find a hook on the SDK level that allows me to capture
the full completion of a screen rotation in Honeycomb, say the
Motorola Xoom.
I can capture the initiation of the rotation with
public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) (when
android:configChanges="orientation" is set accordingly), but all other
Overrides and hooks I've tried (in views, Display, e.g. onRotation())
call back prior to the full completion of the screen rotation.

[android-developers] Re: Skip activity to maintain activity stack

2011-11-28 Thread JP
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input. I can see how you would do this by overriding
the back button functionality, which I was hoping not to do.

But I am a little unclear on how you would go about doing this by
using the startActivityForResult and onActivityResult. Can you provide
a little clue as to what you wanted to do in this case Lbendling? I
know how to start an activity for a result, I just wanted to know what
exactly you were thinking?

Are you thinking that I should start the Activity for a result, and
then if the result is "cancel" i.e. the back button pressed, then open
the MainActivity?

Thanks,
JP

[android-developers] Skip activity to maintain activity stack

2011-11-28 Thread JP
Hi Guys,

I am creating an app, where I am faced with the following dilemma:

The app I am working on has a "public" and "private" view. To see the
private view the user needs to log in. The way the workflow works is,
that when the user opens the app, he first sees a SplashActivity, and
then he sees the public view on the MainActivity, and then he presses
a login button, to take him to the LoginActivity.

On the LoginActivity the user can check a box allowing the app to save
username and password to do an autologin the next time he starts the
app. The autologin is handled by the SplashActivity.

This works fine... but in certain cases the autologin fails. If the
network connection times out or something else. In those cases, I
don't want the user to just be sent to the MainActivity. I want to
send him to the LoginActivity. But I also want to maintain an activity
stack, where the user can press the back button and return from the
LoginActivity to the MainActivity.

Right now I handle that by sending a boolean in the Extra information
of the Intent. If this boolean is true, I send the user to the
LoginActivity right away after loading the MainActivity.

That also works, and I maintain the Activity Stack. ... there is just
one problem.

I see the MainActivity screen flash on the screen before the user is
sent to the LoginActivity.

Am I going about this wrong, or is there some way I can prevent the
MainActivity from flashing on the screen?

Thanks,
JP

[android-developers] Scaling Xperia X10 Mini and other scaling oddities

2011-10-21 Thread JP
Hi guys,

I have a Layout Xml that is build up like this:

- LinearLayout
-- RelativeLayout
 Some Stuff
-- RelativeLayout
 LinearLayout
 RelativeLayout
 MyLayout (extends RelativeLayout)

Basically it is a view with a header, and a page with a top part in a
LiniearLayout, a middle part in a relative layout, and then the
remainder of the page in a layout that I created a class for that
extends RelativeLayout.

I MyLayout I have drawn three circles. I use the OnMeassure method to
calculate their size based on how much space is available. This of
course changes based on the device it is viewed on. I then use
OnLayout to position the circles. In the OnLayout method I know the
size of the Layout.

This works the way I want it to. There is one thing I don't
understand, and that is that the default scaling seems to be hdpi. So
when I ask for scaling I have to do this. Can anyone tell me why I
have to do this?

float scale = getContext().getResources().getDisplayMetrics().density;
scale = scale / 1.5f;

The next thing I don't get is that when I try this on a Sony Ericsson
eXperia X10 Mini the height scaling isn't correct. It is as if the
height is just way off scale. Can anyone tell me what the actual
resolution of the X10 mini is. Because it doesn't seem to be what the
phone reports back.

Thanks,
JP

I've regularly flashed my Nexus One with the various updates, GRJ22-

It is my understanding these are all updates that build on previously

If so - is there a full stock Android Gingerbread ROM for the Nexus
One that flashes a version of Android from scratch, without any prior
version of Android required? This is intended as a restore path after
flashing some custom ROMs...

My guess, based on what we have seen in the past: Somebody stripped
your apk and extracted your original resource file(s), translated to
Russian, then re-packaged and released.
Did you leave your contact inside the app? (I suspect yes)
Do you use source code obfuscation (e.g. Proguard)? (I suspect no)

The stack trace does not include any calls to your code. I suspect it
has to do with the loading of map tiles. Nothing you can do that I
know of. I am seeing this for years now, but not at an alarming clip.
How time flies... Anyway, it would be lovely to learn about this some
more. Perhaps TreKing or someone else who's more involved can weight
in on this with some more insight.
As a side note, I never bothered to check, I'm sure this problem has a
record in some issues database already, where you could push a button
or star.
