Or if you delay a bounce message (comming from null sender (email

ok now works ,

I think that I was confusing embargo time with wait time-

So the emabago time is ;

assp send a soft fail (try later)

If the sender don't resend again during the embargo time the email
will be declined.
Is it correct ?

There is obvious a complete misunderstanding what part

It has *nothing* to do with any checks ASSP is doing after the message

EA The default time is 5 minutes . What does it means ?
EA With an example if someone send me and email at
EA 10:50 AM will I not receive this email before
EA 10:55 AM ?!
If the sender is not on your Whitelist: Yes
If he is on your whitelist, because you mailed him before or he sends
you an email before, the mail will not be delayed.

I set my embargo time to 1 minutes and didn't find any negative
influences.

The time is the minimal time. If the sending server has longer retry
times, the mail will be even later. But most mailers seem to have a
retry time of 5 minutes or so for the first retry.

Re: [Assp-user] Embargo Time ?

2007-02-01 Thread Carnes, Jim
I could be wrong but

Delaying works on the idea that a correctly configured SMTP server will
attempt re-delivery of an email message if it gets a soft failure. ASSP
is intentially returning a 451 error which requests deliverly again
later. If the sending mail server is correctly configured it will
reattempt deliver in X number of minutes. (Depends upon config)

If the server waits and redelivers, the triplet (email address, domain,
IP) gets whitelisted. The assumption is that the Spammer probably won't
try again.

I have my server set to 1 minute as even 5 was causing valid servers to
get flagged as spamming.

Again I could be wrong but I think that is right based on my
understanding.

Delaying does not cause connecting servers to get flagged as
spamming. There is no penalty box score or otherwise. The only
detrimental effect from delaying is that depending on the sending
server, the sender may be notified that the message was delayed - via a
standard SMTP message status report.

Keep in mind that the retry time is whatever the sending server is configured
for. I have my embargo set to 5min, but have seen sending servers take up to
45 min to retry.

I'm trying the delaying filter.

I have a doubt about Embargo Time

The default time is 5 minutes . What does it means ?
With an example if someone send me and email at
10:50 AM will I not receive this email before
10:55 AM ?!

If yes, is it not better an embargo of 1 or 2 minutes ?

make difference for the spammer an embargo time of 1 minute with an
embargo time of 5 minutes ?

Thanks

That's what I've done currently to get the corpus up as it really cuts down
 on the Spam I get.

But there's a big difference between a 0 min delay and turning it off
altogether.

For years I NEVER got any Spam except on the newsgroup addresses, until I
reported about 20 Spam to spamcop, a couple of days after that the
 floodgates opened.

There's a cautionary tale there, somewhere :)

I agree. I find 5 minutes to be quite versitile. It avoids a vast majority of
spam while not being long enough to periodically annoy my users.

What's the effect of using various embargo time durations, say, 1 minute, 5

parameter should allow fractions of a minute to be entered via the web
 interface.

An embargo time of less that 1 minute is pretty much useless in my
experience. Most retries that hammer my server are just a tad over 60
seconds (ex: waited: 1m 9s).

Personally I use an embargo time of 5 min(the default) and have no
issues with it.

This is why I can't wait for the mySQL stuff- so that I can easily do stats
on things like this.

I saw that I was still getting a lot of spam coming back after about 5 mins
9 secs so I up'ed it to 7 mins and get far less.

That's what I've done currently to get the corpus up as it really cuts down

Also my MTA rejects invalid senders- I get loads of Spam to address that
have never existed on my domain. So I grep those logs for these addresses
and add them to the spamtrap list.

For years I NEVER got any Spam except on the newsgroup addresses, until I
reported about 20 Spam to spamcop, a couple of days after that the
