Re: [Blind-Computing] Audio Software Issue
I have no idea what the problem could be, put if I were you, I would either contact the makers of goldWave directly and ask them about it, or use a different tool to convert the file to mp3. Do you have any other software that you could use to convert the file? If it plays in WinAmp then you could try the WinAmp file conversion tool, but I have never used that so I don't even know if it is accessible or not. Hey group. I received a suggestion from one of the list members which indicated that all I had to do was click on Classic Home to get back to the original friendly Google. I did it and it worked. [Blind-Computing] REAL PLAYER AND MIDI FILES
For years, I have been using Real Player instead of WinAmp. I prefer the Explorer style display that the program gives you and I can easily burn CDS with the software. But when I tried to get the thing to play MIDI files, it just wouldn't until yesterday. I got help from a Support person at Real.com. He called himself Chris but his accent was thick enough to be mashed potatoes. But this guy had more patience than anyone I have ever worked with. If anyone else uses Real Player, the 10.5 version will play MIDI files but only after it is properly configured. There is a check box which asks you if you want Real Player to be your universal player for all media. Normally that works but MIDI is not one of the default options. You have to uncheck that box and check Configure Media Manually instead. This is all under Tools and the Media section. There is a list of media types which is amazing and contains about 30 different kinds of media. If you hit the Select All option, then and only then, will Real Player handle that kind of file. SPECIAL NOTE: Real Player's free version is not supported by their telephone Customer Service. But Real Player Plus only costs about $20 and it's worth every penny. Once you purchase and download Real Player Plus, you can get the support you need from their center. However, it is not an 800 number. The listing has a 206 area code which puts it somewhere in the west, probably near the state of Washington. John Justice My job feeds my family, music feeds my soul. Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder
Hi I have the 40. I love it. I use it at work to record names, numbers, things to do, or anything else that most people write down on a sticky note. I've not had time to learn how to connect it to the computer to make use of the WAV file on the computer, or transferring music or audible books. It is supposed to have an Indexing feature that you can use while recording for example a meeting, but I'm yet to learn to use it. Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder
It comes with a printed manual that contains a lot of diagrams. I gave up scanning it. I had my husband set the time and read the directions on how to record, play, and erase recordings. I keep telling myself that I'm going to see if I can find an electric version of the manual on line, but just haven't gotten around to it. This is why I haven't learned to interface it with the computer, or use the indexing feature. Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder
As you move through the folders, it does announce them, Folder A, Folder B,...Music Folder, Audible Folder. Your recorded messages do not have file names that you navigate through. When you are looking for a message that you previously recorded, you press play and start listening to the message and if it is not the one you are looking for, then you press the forward button and skip to the next message. You can stop listening to a message and then continue when you are ready. You might want to join the NFB electronics Talk list. I'm sure that the members of this group can provide you with info about this device and others that might have features that will better meet your needs. Re: [Blind-Computing] Boot up speed
Hi Al, Try opening the Windows Task Manager, and going to the processes tab, and see how many processes are running. It sounds like a resource issue, and there may be too many processes running. Also, you should check the System Configuration Utility, (msconfig), and see how many programs are loading at startup. Ideally, you should only need your security software loading at startup, because allowing programs to load when they are not needed only uses resources unnecessarily. Additionally, there may be services loading at startup that are not needed. David, all of this does sound complicated. I was hoping the three new Olympus recorders would be simple. I've uninstalled the antispywareand again no difference. I don't want to uninstall IE 7 as eventually this will be the version everyone will be using. Has anyone else notice a decrease in boot up after installing AVG antispyware and/or IE 7? I've defragged my hard drive and run reg scrub neither of which made an appreciable difference. Re: [Blind-Computing] Audio Software Issue
Hi Bob, I wouldn't even know how to begin something like that. Could you give me step-by-step instructions outlining how to do this sort of thing? I would also ask, if I'm recording the thing as it is playing, why would I need to convert it after I've recorded it? Why not record it as an MP3 file format right off the outset? Is there something that will not allow me or the program to do this? Rick, There are about 10-15 programs etc loading at startup. You're sure all I need are the Grissoft (virus spyware) things? If I uncheck things there will they stay there to recheck if I need them? It sounds like a resource issue, and there may be too many processes running. Also, you should check the System Configuration Utility, (msconfig), and see how many programs are loading at startup. Ideally, you should only need your security software loading at startup, because allowing programs to load when they are not needed only uses resources unnecessarily. Additionally, there may be services loading at startup that are not needed. Re: [Blind-Computing] Audio Software Issue
Victor, I believe that Gold Wave uses its own internal format for processing files. Once recorded, you can probably save the file into any format supported by Gold Wave. I haven't actually done this but, you would start Gold Wave recording using the input from What I Hear setting in the volume control. Then start playing the file with WinAmp. You would need to be sure that Jaws would not speak during the recording because that would be recorded also unless Jaws is using an output device other than the sound card that plays the music files. Good luck! Re: [Blind-Computing] Boot up speed
Hi Al, If you aren't sure about something in the startup group, then leave it be. If you look at the path given, and find that the item in question resides in the program files folder, then uncheck it. If you find anything relating to windows audio, leave it checked as this could affect the audio for the system. If you wish, we can take this off-list, and maybe we can hookup by phone, and I'll walk thru it with you.
