[Blind-Computing] help with system restore

2013-04-13 Thread Tom
I saved this reply someone had written on how to perform a system restore, a
few months ago, but when I go to “system restore” in my programs menu, nothing
comes up like this. I use win 7, i. e. 8, which is why the “restore”, and jaws
12

1. From the system restore window, choose, restore my computer to an earlier
time, and tab to the next button, and press enter.
2. Use control home, to move to the top of the page, then arrow downuntil
you hear the current month and year. while arrowing down the page, you will
hear instructions for restoring your computer.
3. While the cursor is positioned on the current month, shift tab, and you
will be on the previous month button. if you want to see the restore points
in the previous month, press enter on the previous month button.
4. Follow the above steps to locate the month from which you want to select
a restore point from. Each time you select the previous month, or next month,
you can use the up and down arrow keys to move thru the text on the selected
page.
5. Once you have selected the month you want, from the available choices,,
arrow down the page until you hear the day of the week you want. This is where
a simple NotePad file of your restore points comes in handy. After making a
restore point, if you record this imformation in a file, you can refer to it
to see the exact date you want to restore to. This makes it quicker to
locate a restore point in the restore point calendar.
6. place your cursor on a day of the week, and then tab until you hear Jaws
read a restore point, and from here you can use your up and down arrow keys
to see the list of restore points on the page.
7. once you have found the restore point you want to use, tab to the next
button, and press enter.
8. Here you should get a confirmation page, so, start at the top of the
page, and arrow down to read the imformation.
9. If you are satisfied with your selection, then tab to the next button and
press enter. The system restoration should begin.
10. Do not disturb the computer during this process, your machine should
re-boot when the restore operation has been completed.

There may be a restore confirmation screen presented to you when the machine

re-boots, and you can okay this dialogue to close it, and resume using your
computer.

NOTE:
This is how the process went on the system mentioned above using one
particular version of Jaws, and does not reflect how Jaws will read the
imformation
on every system.

[Blind-Computing] Setting up and using personalization, in Windows 8

2013-04-13 Thread Allen Childs
Hello all,
I have a new Win 8 computer, and I am using JAWS 14. My wife helped me set
up some sounds, such as e-mail and recycle bin, along with some others. She
did this through the personalization, but the only ones that will work are the
e-mail, and recycle bin.
If anyone can help, or let us know if this is even possible in Win 8, I
would be really grateful.
Thanks,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Google Chrome question

2013-04-13 Thread Brad Dunse
Actually no I hadn't. I know there are some special methods/apps out there
to use instead of digging around one's control panel error logs to find out
why it crashes, that kind of tells me it's time to move away from it if
they're making it easier for people to find out why it crashes. I simply
don't' have time to hunt down those things unless there is no other option.

It mostly crashes when logging into my suppliers site to order product which
runs a portal. I've disabled everything that can be. I'm running IE10.x, Win
7 64-bit, and JFW 14. I'm finding Chrome to be much more responsive, more
straightforward in settings, and I hope stable.

If I were you, I'd not change your settings loll. Actually, I really suspect
Jaws 14 as it has crashed and locked up many times with IE. Not happy with
the updates to 14 at all. Actually JFW 13 has crashed using IE 10 too. They
need to share the sandbox and play nice, but not happening I guess.

interesting, have you thought about finding out why I.E. is crashing so
frequently? it doesn't here

I.E. 9, windows 7 64 bit, and jaws 13,

a good many of us have run the I.E. fix file available from microsoft, have
you tried that yet? I locked up one time, ran the file and have been fine
since.

I also am not having a lot of trouble other than my usual it responds
slowly on this computer note with firefox, although I must qualify that I
am using version 14 and do not plan to change that for a while (auto-update
is turned off).

hope this may help

Thanks for your reply. Part of the problem though of running older browsers
is vulnerability to security issues. My last computer found its death by
nasties that got in, not necessarily form a browser security hole. At any
rate I'm not too in favor of leaving any holes if possible, even at the cost
of some accessibility.

Firefox works some of the time without hanging, but it's unpredictable. I
could try looking to see if I missed removing any add-ons other than my
security software add-ons and see if that helps. I actually used Chrome
today to finish placing my on-line business orders and it ran flawlessly ;D.
Very responsive and stable. Explorer crashed no less than 5-times in a half
an hour. I use to swear by Firefox, my wife too. She was directed by the IT
department at work to use Chrome as it is the most secure and stable at this
point. Granted she is sighted, but I know there are folks using screen
readers with Chrome, apparently successfully.

Thanks,

Brad

I really would like to dump Firefox and Explorer, the former locking up most

Hi Tom,

The steps you posted are for XP, it sounds like. Try the following for
Windows7:
1. Open the start menu/ Programs, press enter on Accessories.
2. Arrow to system tools press enter.
3. Arrow to system restore press enter. You're now in system restore.
4. Tab to, next, press the spacebar, you should now be in a list of

Since I've never done a system restore in Win7 I'm going to stop right here.
Hopefully you can take it from here or, someone will pick up where I left

Any idea for a remedy to the following

 Hi Tom,

The steps you posted are for XP, it sounds like. Try the following for
 Windows7:
 1. Open the start menu/ Programs, press enter on Accessories.
 2. Arrow to system tools press enter.
 3. Arrow to system restore press enter. You're now in system restore.
 4. Tab to, next, press the spacebar, you should now be in a list of
 restore points.

Since I've never done a system restore in Win7 I'm going to stop right
 here.
Hopefully you can take it from here or, someone will pick up where I left
 off.

 HTH
 Take care.

I saved this reply someone had written on how to perform a system
 restore,
a few months ago, but when I go to system restore in my programs menu,
nothing comes up like this. I use win 7, i. e. 8, which is why the
 restore,
 and jaws 12

 1. From the system restore window, choose, restore my computer to an
 earlier
time, and tab to the next button, and press enter.
 2. Use control home, to move to the top of the page, then arrow downuntil
you hear the current month and year. while arrowing down the page, you
 will
hear instructions for restoring your computer.
 3. While the cursor is positioned on the current month, shift tab, and you
will be on the previous month button. if you want to see the restore
 points
in the previous month, press enter on the previous month button.
 4. Follow the above steps to locate the month from which you want to
 select
a restore point from. Each time you select the previous month, or next
 month,
you can use the up and down arrow keys to move thru the text on the
 selected
 page.
 5. Once you have selected the month you want, from the available choices,,
arrow down the page until you hear the day of the week you want. This is
 where
a simple NotePad file of your restore points comes in handy. After making
 a
restore point, if you record this imformation in a file, you can refer to
 it
to see the exact date you want to restore to. This makes it quicker to
locate a restore point in the restore point calendar.
 6. place your cursor on a day of the week, and then tab until you hear
 Jaws
read a restore point, and from here you can use your up and down arrow
 keys
to see the list of restore points on the page.
 7. once you have found the restore point you want to use, tab to the next
 button, and press enter.
 8. Here you should get a confirmation page, so, start at the top of the
page, and arrow down to read the imformation.
 9. If you are satisfied with your selection, then tab to the next button
 and
press enter. The system restoration should begin.
 10. Do not disturb the computer during this process, your machine should
re-boot when the restore operation has been completed.

There may be a restore confirmation screen presented to you when the
 machine

re-boots, and you can okay this dialogue

Near the bottom of the screen there is a checkbox that allows more restore
points to be shown. I have to use the Jaws cursor to see it, you may need
similar. Hope that helps.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Alt tab with Excel 2010

2013-04-13 Thread Shari

Hi Al,
I don't have a remedy. At work, I use Excel 2010 and Jaws 13, and don't
experience that problem. I have Jaws 14 but don't use it because overall I
find 13 performs better.

Hope someone else has ideas.

Any idea for a remedy to the following

. If I am in Excel 2010 and working in a cell and alt tab to another
program then alt tab back to Excel 2010 I end up on the home tab of
the ribbons rather than the cell where I was prior to alt tabbing to
another program. Very annoying. I can hit escape a couple of times to
get out of the ribbons but I wish I could simply land back in the cell
I was in.

Thanks

Al

I face the same problem with Excel 2007 and JAWS 14 on my work PC. Since you
are facing the same problem with 2010 and not sure if you are using JAWS 14,
assuming you are. I am escalating this to the JAWS support team.

I am already in the persuit of resolving many other issues with how JAWS
behaves on my work PC.
