Re: [BlindHandyMan] talking thermometer or other solution.

Aloha Sheryl,
Given that the beans are inside a drum that can
be 400 degrees hotter than the actual beans, I
think that some device that will speak the
digital readout of the existing thermometers
would be the easiest way to go since those
thermometers are already installed in the big roaster.
I wonder if the manufacturer of the roaster could
be of any assistance in this quest.

Aloha everyone,

I am looking for your great solutions.
I roast coffee beans in a roasting machine that has a drum made of cast iron.
The drum can get to around 700 degrees. The beans get to around 400
degrees plus depending on the darkness you want. The beans touch a
sensor which tells on a print display what temperature the beans are
at. It is critical to know the temperature of the beans which is
vital to the roasting process . I am looking for a talking device
that could read the digital temperature display or a talking
thermometer that has a probe that can be put in to the barrel and the
beans touching the probe will register the temperature of the beans.
I might like a wireless thermometer if one exists so I can access the
temperature everywhere in the wear house and do the next steps
required for completing the roasting process. I suggest that the
thermometer probe or sensor be able to tolerate temperatures up to
800 degrees. Look forward to hearing from you.

[BlindHandyMan] Foaming drain cleaner

2010-09-07 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha all,
Our bathtub is running slow and my husband brought home a product
made by drano. It's a foaming product. The bottle looks very strange.
It is split into two parts but the mouth of the bottle is open to
both halves of the bottle so that when pouring it, the liquid will
mix together. I suspect that's when it will start foaming. The only
warning is to not use it in a toilet.
Anyone had any experience with this stuff?

Aloha Blake,
I think this is definitely a handyman question.
If I am sweeping in the house, I will often sweep
all the dust to a corner and then it is easier to
get down on the floor and, using a papertowel or
a cloth, you can push the dirt right into the
dust pan. When you're done, you can also use a

Guess the motor went out possibly?

On another note, I ordered a new Oreck Cannister

doesn't seem to pick up as well, as our original
cannister vac. And, the pieces don't seem to fit
tightly enough because the hose keeps disloding
from the unit, or the handle dislodges from the hose. It drives me insane.

You may be wondering why we have two Orecks; we
bought them as a set, the upright, cannister
cordless iron, and we've liked them a great deal.

Now, I've been looking online at QVC, and there
are several Oreck uprights there, but I just
can't figure out which one will be the best. I
like the lightweight feature of the Oreck
upright, as I have a good deal of house to cover!
There is an Oreck set that includes an upright,
cannister vac cordless iron, for $549.
The premice is that this upright vac is super

drawback to our current Oreck upright is that it is loud.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Buying a new Bed?

Aloha Claudia,
You can purchase just a frame by itself. Some
metal frames have adjustable height. The legs are
kind of telescoping. The trick with those is to get them level.

Some of the wooden frames I have seen already
have holes that are supposed to be able to be used to connect to a headboard.

Okay,

I need some explanation here.
We have a queen-sized bed that sits on a metal

It's the width of the bed, with shelves on each
side and an open space in the middle.
We'd like a similar set-up for the new bed.

However, we've been hunting, and this is what
we've found. The beds don't seem to have metal
or iron frames anymore; they seem to have a wood
base or frame. I'm wondering if we can connect a
headboard to this type of bed or not?

As I said, the current frame is on wheels, so
that gives the bed some height; we need
something that's a little lower to the ground,
so it seems that wood frames are the way to go.
But, again, we also want this book case style
headboard, and they're difficult to find.
Walmart has one by Sauder that we can put
together, and this is what I'm thinking of doing.

Is it logical that you can purchase a bed frame
separately from the bed itself? Am I right in
thinking that you can't connect headboards to
wooden frames? And if I'm wrong on this, how is
this done? Would it be by drilling holes into
the frame and screwing the headboard to it?
I'm not sure if this is making any sense, but
since I don't have any sight, all of what I'm
picturing here has been things that I've only been able to touch!

I absolutely agree that my Tempur-Pedic is the
best purchase I ever made too. I also like the
fact that they are mold and mildew safe. I didn't
have to buy special sheets. We looked at the
number beds, but they didn't guarantee no mold or
mildew. The nice thing about this one is that it
conforms to your body and there's no need to
adjust it. Just get into bed and within about 15
seconds it molds to you. It also doesn't wiggle
when the other person gets in or out of bed, thus not waking others.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I do have
an old back injury and sleep is marvelous since the purchase.

I would take a look at the comfort select beds. They let each person
 select
their own comfort number. My wife and I tried them out of all places, at
Camping World for RVs and I liked my setting of 80. She liked her side at
  89. The scale is 0 to 100 so the difference between our 2 comfort
  settings
is about 10 percent. That's a huge difference but you can change your
settings at any time depending on how your back feels at any given moment.
There are 2 remotes. One for each side of the bed.

These beds are also in stores as well and go by several names. Comfort
select, Air Select, Adjustable air comfort and others. These kinds of
  beds
are everything the water bed never was. No hundreds of pounds of water to
worry about or leaks etc. These beds have a blatter inside the mattress
that is filled with air forced in by a small compressor. There are no
  lumpy
spots. My concern was with an air blatter that there might be a hill or a
valley depending on how much air was used. This was not the case however.
At the time we saw these beds they sold for 3,000 bucks for a queen size
  but
we're talking for a motor home and around 2002. Sense then, quite a few
companies make them for folks who could use better back support and the
costs have come down. If you try one of these beds out, I can tell you,
your going to want one at any price. That's what we're going to get for
  our
next bed. But, you be the judge. Try it! you'll like it! grin

Sounds like fun. Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

2010-07-09 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Matt,
My friend made trays with extruded aluminum just
like some folks use to make window screens. Then
she could just take them out in the yard and squirt them off with the hose.
She made a tent out of screen that was open on
the bottom so it could just be set over the whole
stack of trays. She used some sort of round metal
sticks to separate the stacked trays. I remember
that she had some sort of round stops on the
separation sticks, and the frames of the trays
had wholes for the separating sticks to fit into.
I'll try to reach her via email. She lives in
California now, but she used to dry apples,
pineapple, bananas, papaya, mango, parsley, and basil when she lived here.

recipes for making pies and breads out of them.
I looked up instructions on drying your own.
They suggested oven on the lowest setting, or in a car on a hot day.
The oven works, but your spouse complains about
the oven always being busy, and you can only get
so many in there at 1 time. And it does take at least 6 hours the way I did it.
My wife suggested I not buy a dehydrator,
because as it is I am a gadget buyer. And ya
start running out of space to live after so long.
Just now I am considering building a wooden
frame which would hold cookie sheets stacked but
spaced from one another 1 on top of the other,
and buying screen to cover the outside to keep
some bugs out, and putting an old fan I have out
in storage in one end of it. My idea lacks the
heat element factor, but I live in east tx, and
am figuring, I could set it up in the attic, or
out in a back room where there is no air
conditioning. I could go to the trouble of
forming my own screen trays, if I wanted to
build them, but then cleaning something like
that with a wood frame? I don't think that would
last long. Anyone ever done this stuff, say, to make jerky or whatever?
just curious.

Is this supposed to be a house for the cat to stay inside? I just
wonder because if it can get out, it will probably continue to
scratch it's favorite furniture anyway. I have found that having more
than one scratching post works well, and you put them in front of the
things you don't want them to scratch. A little catnip on the
scratching post gets their attention.
I also think a person has to be diligent about removing them from
things that are not appropriate to scratch. It takes some doing, but
it's worth it in the long run. Some of my friends have used a squirt

Isn't inspections mandatory in your state with selling a home?

You should hire an inspector who does this for a living. It's not what you
can see but rather what you can't. Water damage, dry rot, termites etc.
Those things often can't bee seen and it takes somebody who is trained in
knowing what to look for. The inspection is mandatory in many states and
the home owner should have that done in order to sell the house. If your
state doesn't require it, you can hire a professional to do the job for you.
The fee is around 400 to 500 dollars but if your really serious about buying
it it's well worth the price especially if you live in an area with high
humidity.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] older homes - what to look for

  Hi good people,

Well let me tell you a little story and try not to bore you to tears or
make this a super long message. My wife and I walk by this home and have
done so for several years. She has always commented on how lovely the
house looks and incredibly it went on the market about 10 days ago.
Apparently the couple that owned it has passed on and the kids have
  decided to sell the property.
So, here is a description, which will help set the tone of the question.
The house is a custom-built Rambler, constructed in 1954, and is all
brick. The house is not very large (according to the tax record is 1,500
square feet) and has a living room, dining room, kitchen, full bath, and
four bedrooms; on one level. I neglected to bring a tape when we took a
tour, but think I would if we take another look. There is an attic with a
fixed set of stairs and it has flooring down and the roof is not plywood,
but (I can't think of the correct name) some sort of planks with shingles
over that. The basement is partially finished with solid pine paneling and
interesting it has a solid block wall running down the middle and
apparently this was common in the 50's. It has an oil-fired boiler that
provides baseboard heat and it does have central air, but that was added
later and the air handler is in the attic and the vents are in the
  ceiling.
Ok, so the purpose of describing this house is I am curious what things I
should be looking for if we seriously entertain the idea of purchasing it.
I understand there is a breaker panel and not a fusebox. However, let me
mention a couple other things as well. There is a separate two-car garage
that does have a fusebox, but this is a very substantial structure that
they even put in some ceiling fans since one of the kids used to detail
cars in there. In addition, there are two (I know this sounds nuts)
walk-in freezers. I am talking freezers that are stand-alone buildings.
Apparently this gent used to cut up meat for people if they would bring
him the animal. Now the freezers are no longer operational, but they have
been used for storage and either would make an excellent workshop. Oh as a
side note, they are tossing in two tractor/mowers, a big walk-behind
mower, and a snow blower. SO, honestly, the only issues for me is little
if any closet space and that apparently was common in the 50[s as well and
I know I would have to install a dish washer and a few other changes. The
place has all hardwood floors under carpet and I can't imagine it would
take much to fix these up. So, of course I am researching whether I could
purchase the place that does sit on 2.5 acres and gee I could sell one of
them and make half my investment bak.
So, again, what stuff should I look at that could really be an issue for a
home of this age. Btw, I did not smell any wet oders or anything that
would indicate leaking of the basement or house in general.
SOrry for going on so, but hope it planted some neat images. As one final
side note/question, the windows are the single-pane type with storm
windows. The agent showing the home tried to tell me these are more
efficient than the newer double-pane windows and I think he's

I think you can put the probe inside the oven
while it is heating. I have a meat thermometer
and you put the probe in the meat and there is a
cable that extends out of the oven to the talking
unit. I just press the button on the unit to hear
the temperature. No need to open the oven to check.

As for accuracy, we did a test with the talking
unit that we bought from Maxi Aids some time ago
and the little round one that we hang on the
rack. I suppose that is the spring type that you
mention, but don't know for sure, but I know it's
not digital. They both registered the same temp after about 11 minutes.

How to Remove Water Ring Stains on Fine Wood Furniture

Who knew - the wonder's of mayonnaise - full
flavor and all the fat please - easily removes
water rings on your good furniture - we have
used this trick for years - and it really works
fantastically...no need to re-stain your grandmother's antiques...

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:
a.. full fat mayonnaise - 2 tablespoons
b.. couple of paper towels
c.. 6-12 hours wait time
1.. Step 1
Locate ring from leaving your favorite ice tea
or other cold drink that has now left a water
mark on your Grandmother's passed down antique table top.

Grab full fat mayonnaise (miracle whip OK too
here folks) and spread 2 tablespoons of
mayonnaise covering water ring like you would a BLT sandwich.

2.. Step 2
Gently place paper towel over water ring and
slabbed on mayo - it's more to remind you that
the mayonnaise is there than anything else while keeping the area moist.

3.. Step 3
We normally leave the mayonnaise on overnight,
but by 6 hours, wipe clean and voila, water ring is removed.

4.. Step 4
Why does this work, you ask? The fat in the
mayonnaise gently gets reabsorbed into the wax
in the wood thereby removing water ring mark and
leaving you and your favorite antique table top looking fantastic...

This is great in the summer when people forget
to use coasters under their iced drinks...

cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is
illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Dishwashers
Units: About 1.7 million in the United States

Admiral(r), Magic Chef(r), Performa by Maytag(r) and Crosley(r) brand
dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The
affected dishwashers were manufactured with black, bisque, white,
silver and stainless steel front panels.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled
dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse
or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher
about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their
dishwasher is included in the recall. If the dishwasher is included
in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or
receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand
stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer
purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250
if the consumer purchases new
dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Consumers
should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where
purchased as retailers
are not prepared to take the units back.

Aloha Phil,
I did manage to find a users manual, but of
course there is no mention of how to solve your
issue. However, perhaps if you call:
* 866-674-3549 they can help you. They are in Arizona.
* I have the user manual in a txt or pdf file
that is quite readable with Acrobat, so if you
want it, I can send it off list.
* I wonder if because it has four alarms,
perhaps it only works with the 24 hour time.
* Good luck,
* Betsy

Hello Everybody,

This is about my stove top. The elements are not
setting into the terminal block correctly. I can
not get them in myself a lot of the time, and
when they are in it does not take much to bump
them loose. Does the whole terminal block have
to be replaced or is there maybe some kind of
gasket that is just needing to be replaced? Any

Before you ever buy one, check the price of

just the top, not the oven too. Why do you need
to replace it? Drop a pan on one and watch what
happens. I ordered replacements everyday there.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How do I grab the archives

Aloha Matt,
This may not be the fastest way to do this, but it will get you there.

Below this message is a link to the archives
page. I have moved through it in two ways.

You can type your query in the search box such as
airconditioner. This will bring up lots of items
including some from 2007 that didn't look like what you wanted.

Or, if you leave the sort by on Thread, it will
show you all of the different threads that have
been discussed. These appear to be in a List View
on my computer, so i used the letter l to move
from one list grouping to the next.
Once I find the list that I want, I open it and
then I can move from one message to the next
using the number 3 for Heading Level 3.
That's number 3, not F3.

I hope this helps.

As someone else mentioned, it depends on what I'm
trying to protect myself from, but I did buy a
box of 100 non-latex gloves at my local drugstore
for things like dealing with messy stuff. I also
have some that are for using harsh chemicals. I
think the regular gloves from the drugstore were $7 for the box.

I'm also a fan of plastic bags for cleaning cat boxes and the like.
They give you plenty of room to stretch your fingers.

I have a funny little thing that is actually a

buttons is smaller than a triple a battery, but
it is the same shape. I bought replacement
batteries but that didn't fix the problem. I wish

Yes, I remember the back ache I got from reading
your original post, but I didn't know the shape

Hmm, back to the drawingboard,
Betsy
At 03:58 PM 5/3/2010, you wrote:

Betsy,

The pig is a five foot long, thirty inch high, eight inch thick,
approximately 450 pound, cast iron radiator. I removed it from my
living room, and when faced with the prospect of trying to get it down the
stairs to the street, and onto a truck, I opted for the somewhat easier,
and much riskier plan of sliding it down the basement stairs. Here is a
post I wrote about it at the time.

Well, I now have a 400+ pound, cast iron, radiator sitting in my basement.
My buddy Mark came over on Saturday and we pulled off the rigging job of
the decade. At least my rigging job of the decade.

First, I had to empty out a cupboard in the kitchen and move the cupboard
out of the way.

We ripped a 4X8 sheet of 3/4 inch plywood in half and then ripped one of
the halves in half to make a 24 inch wide, 12 foot long ramp. We laid that
down over the steps. You know, stairs are a lot steeper than you realize
when there is a ramp down them. We kept joking that we would make the
Darwin awards if saw dust caught fire and we couldn't get out of the
basement because of the ramp. It was quite challenging getting up and
down that ramp. I opted not to take Mark up on his offer of giving me
every dollar in his bank account if I would put on roller blades and go
down the ramp. He even allowed that I could put a mattress against the
wall opposite the bottom of the stairs.

We screwed a 2X4 along the outer edge of the ramp to prevent the radiator
from skidding off the open side of the stairs.

We screwed a 2X4 down the middle of the ramp to join the upper and lower
sections together.

We wedged a 2X4 between the bottom of the ramp and the wall opposite the
bottom of the stairs to keep the ramp from slipping.

We took to 2X4s 5 feet long, laid them parallel to each other and 18
inches apart, outer edge to outer edge. We then put 18 inch long 2X4s on
top of those, connecting them together. We put three screws in each
corner. So, the cross bars were above the floor by the thickness of a 2X4.

We drilled two holes in each crossbar to accept the legs of the radiator.

We brought the sled upstairs and eventually managed to manhandle the
radiator up onto the sled with the legs fitting nicely into the holes in
the crossbars. Have I mentioned that this radiator is friggin heavy? Then
we screwed big hooks into the sled rails and used
those to anchor a strap around the radiator to keep it from falling over
side to side.

We then slid the sled over to the basement stairs and lined it up. I used
my rock climbing know-how and gear and tied a line onto the radiator. I
stood a 4X4 outside the kitchen window, it went from the ground up above
the top of the window so you could pull it and it wouldn't pull through
the window. I wrapped some flat webbing around the 4X4, ran two steel
carabiners through the webbing, and attached my belay device to the
carabiners. The rope went through the belay device and the carabiners.
We were now ready.

We spent some time going over what we might have forgotten. There were
many ways this could go wrong, but at least we were pretty sure we
couldn't get injured. We could do a whole hell of a lot of damage to the
basement, but we would be well out of the way. One thing we were really
worried about was the radiator getting hung up on something. If it got
jammed on the way down, we were seriously screwed. It would be
extremely difficult, and not a little dangerous if we had to try and
manipulate the radiator while it was on the ramp. We briefly discussed
if it was a possibility that the 2X4 sled runners might snap as all the
weight of the radiator would be on a very narrow point, or line, across
the runners as the radiator tipped over the edge of the beginning of the
stairs, but we figured they were strong enough.

Well, after running out of things to discuss, we figured it was about time
to go for it. I manned the belay, Mark manned the radiator, and Teresa
manned the camera for evidence at the coroner's inquest.

Mark slid the sled forward to just before the center of gravity. He
lifted up the back end as I kept tension on the rope. With me belaying
the radiator, he was able to nudge the radiator forward until the sled
eased over and laid down on the ramp. From there, I was in control and
could easily belay the 400 pound pig down the ramp. It slid right over
the center 2X4 that was joining the upper and lower ramp segments
together. There was a bit of a bump there, but it did just fine. Within
a moment, the pig had bottomed out at the bottom of the ramp.

I gave the belay line to Teresa and Mark and I eased our way down the ramp
and off the side of the stairs. With Teresa belaying from above, Mark and
I eased the pig forward until it was sitting fully on the

That thing is quite interesting. On the side of the vacuum motor is a gear
about 3/8 inch then the one that I lost about 3/4 inch on one side and a 1/4
inch gear molded to it. The 3/4 mates with the motor and the 1/4 mates with
one about 1 1/4 inch. There is about a 1 inch that is molded to the large
one and a toothed belt goes from the 1 inch gear to the brush. The only
access to any internal parts is to replace the belt. It is definitely a very

Re: [BlindHandyMan] handywoman question- needle threaders

2010-04-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Linda,
I agree with Dave's email. I have used both of
those threading solutions. I keep the wire loop
kind in my purse in case I am out somewhere and
don't have the self-threading needles around.
Before 911, I used to carry a self-threading
needle in my purse, but not anymore of course.

If you have hand coordination challenges, there
are some other needle threaders that are used by
putting the end of the needle with the eye into a
tiny cup shaped part of a device, and then you
place your thread on another part of the
threader. Then you push down on a lever and the
device threads the needle. I remember using one
of these when I was little and didn't like it.

Another alternative is to purchase needles that
are already threaded. I believe they are sold by
places such as American Foundation for the Blind
and/or the Braille Institute store in California.
I haven't seen a catalog of blindness products
from either one of these places lately, so don't know if they still carry them.
Good luck, Betsy

Re: [BlindHandyMan] handywoman question- needle threaders

2010-04-13 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha,
I think the web site was provided for the
possible purchase of needles that are already threaded.

I've seen the wire type needle threaders in the
notions section of the grocery store. Many
travel-sized sewing kits come with them inside
with several colors of thread, a thimble,
sometimes a pair of tiny scissors or a seam
ripper. Some kits even have a few buttons and safety pins.

gum, and then stick it to the bottom of an item
that you want to stick to the surface of a table
so it can't be knocked off (i.e. a clock on a
night table). But this sticky stuff is not
permanent and is easy to remove if you want to.
Does anyone have any idea what I am talking
about, what it is called, and where I can obtain it?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] drilling under sidewalks

2010-04-03 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Very clever. Great handy hint for all of us.
Betsy
At 11:49 AM 4/3/2010, you wrote:

Well after a frustrating trip to Home Depot I acquired enough parts to
water jet a pipe under our sidewalk steps. We have a outdoor post light
fixture close to our front door and had one in the back yard. Due to the
room addition I removed the one in the back yard. They use two 12 volt
automotive 1156 lamps in series. The direct burial wire is then fed from a
24 volt transformer in the garage. I decided to relocate the back yard
light into the front at the bottom of a long sidewalk that has about six
steps strung out for 30 feet. Of course the light I wished to put on the
side opposite the house as the one up by the front door is. Therefore wire
must run under the sidewalk. So for the actual fun. The steps are four
foot wide . I found a length of black pipe about five foot long. On one
end I put a half inch coupling and then a half inch plug. In this plug I
drilled a hole about one eight inch or larger. On the other end I /Put on
a ball valve and a adapter to fasten a water hose on to it. I dug out about
4 inches on one side of the walk down below the bottom of the cement. Then
I pushed the pipe into the dirt as far as I could by hand. Pulled it back
slightly. Turned the water on very briefly, then pushed again. By
repeating this turning water on and pushing I went through the four feet of
dirt in less than 5 minutes. Very similar to the method I use to sink a
ground rod. Large companies use power equipment to do this same function.
Of course much further distances, but it is amazing how easy it goes.

Depends on the drain. You can always use a snake, but typically you will
have to get your hands a bit wet to get it started.

these things so that Sofia will be able to truly

landing, which is another 10 or so steps. For that, I'd give them an
extra 10 bucks each. Then I would have to carry the lumber from the end
of the long landing, up another 25 steps, down the courtyard, around the
house, and into the basement.

This not being my first time at this, I broke out my tools, a 20 foot long
length of flat tubular webbing. With this, and a fist full of Ibuprofen,
I can move just about anything.

I don't think I can accurately describe this. I tie the webbing into a
large loop. I then stack up some lumber on top of a couple of bricks. I
slide one end of the boards through the loop of webbing. I then crouch
down next to the lumber, with the stack of boards to my right. I pull the
doubled webbing up my back and over my left shoulder, then down in front
of me. I take the doubled webbing and wrap it around the stack of boards
twice, leaving enough of the end for me to hold.

When I stand up, all the weight of the lumber is on my shoulder, not my
hands or arms. Even the free end of the webbing has very little tension
on it because the friction of it against the wood holds it in place.

It makes it quite easy to haul the lumber for any distance.

Because I had a mix of treated and untreated lumber, it reminded me of
just how damn heavy the treated boards are.

Lastly, my handy dandy, brand new, panel carrier did not come in handy. I
tried hauling one of the OSB sheets with it, but it was just to damn
heavy. So I tried looping the webbing around my shoulder and then hooking
the handle of the carrier through the loop. No joy. Still too heavy to
maneuver it up the stairs. So I ended up ratchet strapping the boards to
a dolly. it took a long time, but I eventually got everything up there.

I'm hurtin today.

I have a dishwasher because my other half thinks
it is his job to wash dishes and they are not
clean. I've been washing dishes for more years
than I am willing to admit here, but I assure you
that I will never forget how. There are some items that I still wash by hand.

I must say that since we installed the
dishwasher, my water bill has gone down $7 per
month. My dishwasher does not require me to rinse
the dishes before putting them in. I only have to
make sure that there are no chunks of food on them.

guarantee one more than 10 years. I just bought one here this past December

My wife got it at Office Max she thinks. Point is it was an office supply
store. It carries three to four boxes of paper real well.

I have a Victor Stream. I use it for recording
meeting. Some of the meetings are in large rooms
and include several people. I also get a good
recording over the phone. If I'm attending a
meeting by phone, I will put the Stream in
another room with a speaker phone. Then I can
listen to it and put bookmarks in at the
important parts if I need to review it.

I didn't look at the specs for the DM420 and DM520, but assume the
announcement I just read, talking about the new DM4 and DM5 is probably
the same. Not only does the DM4 and 5 have audible menus, but they do
text to speech, voice commands, and can read DAISY texts. Seems like the
way to go for me, if I wasn't already using my cell phone for most of
this. Although, my cell phone doesn't have the same recording quality as
the Olympus devices. But just think of it, off-the-shelf technology with
text to speech and DAISY capabilities. Nice job Olympus.

There usually isn't any good reason to remove
paint and if it is very old you probably don't
want to remove it for fear you liberate old lead
paint. Generally it is sufficient to wash the
paint thoroughly so the new sticks well although
you may also wish to give a gentle scrub with
something like 80 grit sand paper to take off
any nibs or other high points bearing in mind
the caveat of the possibility of lead paint.

[BlindHandyMan] Old Vinyl Composite Tile

2010-03-22 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha Everyone,
We are ready to have vinyl flooring installed in the kitchen. We
discovered that the current vinyl was installed over some old
flooring that my contractor thinks is what they call VCT. Does anyone
know when they stopped using asbestos in such flooring? We may be
able to remove the top layer and lay the new over the bottom, but
this house was built in 1979 and I suspect that the VCT was the first
flooring installed here.

Betsy,

It's not possible to determine precisely by date if your tiles have
asbestos, but here's quote from Wiccapedia.

Vinyl composition tiles took the place of

asbestos

tiles, which were widely used in schools, hospitals, offices, and public
buildings up until the 1980s. Use of tiles and adhesives containing asbestos
were

discontinued when asbestos materials were determined to be hazardous. Tiles
free of asbestos are easily distinguished by their size - asbestos tiles
were

commonly manufactured in 9-inch squares. However, not all 9-inch square
vinyl tiles manufactured before 1980 contain asbestos. Mastics and adhesives
containing

low concentrations of asbestos were used into the 1970s and are generally
considered non-hazardous because the asbestos is not considered friable.

Non-ACM (asbestos containing materials) floor tiles are not identifiable by
their size. ACM flooring (tiles, sheets, panels, etc.) may come in any color

or size and the use of asbestos in flooring and mastics has not been
eliminated.

You do need to have a smooth surface to lay new vinyl on. If old adhesive
is left, any imperfection in the surface below will translate to the visible
surface on top.

If you cannot get a smooth surface to lay your new vinyl, you may need to
strip the floor down to the subfloor and lay sheets of underlayment first.

Blessings,

Tom

Aloha Everyone,
We are ready to have vinyl flooring installed in the kitchen. We
discovered that the current vinyl was installed over some old
flooring that my contractor thinks is what they call VCT. Does anyone
know when they stopped using asbestos in such flooring? We may be
able to remove the top layer and lay the new over the bottom, but
this house was built in 1979 and I suspect that the VCT was the first
flooring installed here.

Aloha all,
I did get hold of a wrench to turn the disposal
from the bottom and it does turn but it almost
takes 3 men and a baby to move it. It didn't get
any easier after turning it several times.

RJ, where would I put the socket to turn it from the top?

We pay $25 per month and most of our garbage goes
out to the compost. We don't actually have

We also do it the old fashioned way but the cost is covered by our property

this.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Molded Bathroom Walls!

2010-03-21 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Hi Claudia,
I have those in both of my bathrooms and love
them. Depending on where one lives they may be
costly, but here I can get a replacement for
about $200. When we had to replace a washer in
our tub faucet, I priced a replacement because it
was a good possibility that the enclosure was
going to get cracked in order to get to the
problem. It didn't crack for which I was most grateful.

Having had tile and cleaning it for years, I
would put another enclosure in if something
happened to ours. What is your son using to
scrape it? It's not easy. Perhaps you can remove
the problem before it gets any worse. Maybe you
can remove anything from the bathroom that is sharp.

Hi All,

I don't know what you call this, but here is my question.
In our bathroom, we have that fitted molding,
around 3 walls of our tub. It's either made of acrylic or a hard plastic.
I don't recall what it's called, but it's
starting to chip. Why would the previous owners
have put something up lie this? Is it because
they wanted to protect the walls underneath, or
because they were trying to hide or cover something up?
These things are very expensive to purchase install, aren't they?
It's pretty easy to clean, but, as I said, I'm a
little worried now because I think my son is
scraping off the acrylic from the walls, and I'm
thinking this could be dangerous!
The molding goes up, to at least 3 quarters from
the top of the walls, and it's got shelves for
soap, bars for wash clothes, etc.

[BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal

2010-03-20 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Aloha everyone,
You know, I wanted to replace the garbage disposal when we did the
kitchen, but I lost that one.

Today the unit only hums when I turn it on. I remembered that I had
taped the wrench to insert at the bottom to turn it on the inside of
the old cabinet and for got all about it. So, now I have no tool to
turn it. Is it an
alan wrench? I have a couple but they aren't big enough. The blades
on the inside turn freely and water drains through. I did press the
reset button.
Suggestions? TIA, Betsy

A few weeks ago we discussed solutions for keeping water from
splashing when it drains from the washer. I took the suggestion to
cover the end with a nylon stocking, but when it gets full it pops
off of the hose even though I have it tied on and have a rubberband
looped around it three times. I went to home Depo yesterday to buy
one of the screen socks that someone mentioned but they didn't have
one. Will whoever wrote about the sock please let me know where you
purchased it?

I think I wrote about the lint trap on the end of the discharge hose for
my washing machine. It is just a stainless steel mesh sock and it is held
on to the end of the hose with a zip tie. I thought we got it at Lowes,
but possibly Home Depot.

As I found out today, not all Lowes carry the same stuff. I asked three
different guys today about a sheet goods carrier, and they all adamantly
insisted that they don't have them, never had them.

Oh yeah, the lint sock stays on quite well for me, but that probably has
something to do with the fact that I extended the existing hose with a
piece of old vacuum cleaner hose, so the zip tie catches in the ridges
quite nicely.

Aloha Blaine,
My only comment at the moment is that I would
definitely raise that electrical socket rather
than having a hole that the cords pass through to
be plugged in. First, if it is a socket that you
use for more than two things you'll be crawling
underneath that counter and it will eventually
get old. Secondly, no matter how careful you are,
crumbs, dust and spilled liquid will be able to
fall through that hole. I can just imagine
spilled liquid running down the cords and into the socket. Yikes...

wish to put oak or an Oak finish so it looks like oak but really isn't to
the untrained eye. I would keep the shelves the same but put oak in the
doors and the frame would be oak. thought about having an oak trim and then
putting oak plywood in the middle and using a router to shape it so it had a
little decorative look to it. I also want to extend the counter to the
stove, it's in a corner is where I would want to put the extention so that I
could put coffee pots or microwave there and have more room on top of the
counter where the microwave is now for food prep. I know that I would have
to have a angled cut but trying to figure out how I would attach it to the
counter already there? There also is a plug beneath where the counter is
right now where I'm considering putting this extra counter. I would have to
have a space by the wall to drop the chords, or I could get the landlord,
who is an electrission to raise the plug so that I could put the extention
right up to the wall. I was looking at using two-by-twos to attach to the
counter already and against the back wall. I also would like to take the
bathroom counters and fix the drawer so that it roles out instead of pulling
out and also doing the same with the oak, I think I would completely redue
the cabinets keeping the counter top the same but putting an oak trim on the
edge and doing the cabbinets in oak. Let me know what you all think. Any
suggestions would be great.
