[cayugabirds-l] Fairgrounds Access
Hi all, Eric Sibbald and I are headed up to the Montezuma area today, and we would like to see Upland Sandpipers. I understand that the fairgrounds where they're seen reliably is restricted access. Does anyone know how I can go about obtaining permission? Is there a number I can call? Please contact me off-list via email (randrew...@gmail.com https://mail.google.com/mail/mu/mp/972/?source=naphr=1hl=en), or phone (706-587-9312). Thank you very much! RE: [cayugabirds-l] Fairgrounds Access
Ralph Lott Farms are what I call the Seneca County Fairgrounds. 315 568-9501 I always get an answering machine; ask permission, leave my name and # with a description of the vehicle I will be driving. They have been very generous in giving people access. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fairgrounds Access
The Lott Farm on the NE corner of NYS-414 and Martin Rd (aka Airport Rd) south of Seneca Falls (Martin Rd is the Seneca Falls - Fayette town line) is private, although the Empire State Farm Days event is held there for a few days late each summer. There is another fairgrounds in Seneca Falls, so to avoid ambiguity and help everyone respect the fact that it is private, I think we should call it the Lott Farm, not the Fairgrounds. So far, the folks at eBird have not made this switch. With its extensive grasslands this farm is, as far as I know, the only reliable place around the Cayuga Lake Basin to find Upland Sandpipers. It's also great for other grassland birds. Fortunately the owners have been very gracious in the past about allowing access when birders either call them (315) 568-9501 or visit their office in the building complex near the intersection. They have asked for vehicle descriptions, times when people will be there, and requested that birders stay on the gravel roadways. I know you asked for a private reply, Andrew, but this is a great place that I think all local birders should know about and how to access. --Dave Nutter On Jun 26, 2014, at 09:51 AM, Andrew Dreelin randrew...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, Eric Sibbald and I are headed up to the Montezuma area today, and we would like to see Upland Sandpipers. [cayugabirds-l] Monk Parakeets
Monk Parakeets Meg and I were treated to a great view of these birds, flying in tandem and adding to their large nest. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Monk Parakeets nesting in Hector
I visited the Monk Parakeet pair in Hector late this afternoon after first stopping at May's Point Rd South to view the Red-headed Woodpeckers. At both stops the birds put on a quite a show. What beautiful colors the Parakeets have...especially their incredible greens! On the way home stopped at Knox-Marcellus where I saw Black Tern, Caspian Terns, Sandhill Crane, Yellowlegs, GW Teal. Many swallows lining the wires on 89. Stopped traffic for duckling crossing and turtle crossing on 89 within a 1/4 mile of the wildlife trail exit point. Busy road! And the Red-headed Woodpeckers fly so low the traffic on May's Pt Rd is a concern. Beautiful, beautiful drive on 414. Did support the Hector Winery as suggested. They have a super big, white dog, but hadn't heard about the Parakeets. Good birding, Judy Thurber Liverpool Sent from my iPad On Jun 24, 2014, at 11:15 PM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote: This afternoon I went to Hector and saw the Monk Parakeet pair. They were as Lee Ann said in the first building along the right of the driveway, an open-faced tractor shed. The owner was nearby and welcomed me, You're either here for cherries or to see the parakeets. He showed me exactly where the birds were. (For modern folks that location is 42.5021, -76.8752, and for old-timers it's about an eighth of an inch from the bottom of page 59 of the DeLorme NYS Atlas.) He told me that the parakeets had shown up on their own, but were tolerant of people nearby, and I should take my time. I wish the gentleman was still around when I left, because I like cherries, too. While I watched, the birds fussed with their pile of sticks up against the roof at the back of the shed, and twice one of the birds flew to a nearby tree for several minutes then returned with another stick, carried in the bill by the butt end, which looks odd, but makes sense with such a hefty beak. The chartreuse, aqua, and blue of the birds' plumage positively glows, and the gray parts are tastefully subdued and subtly barred. If anyone else wants to see these gorgeous and charming birds, I suggest you do so soon, because the shed is slated to be torn down, so the owner plans to oust the birds in about a week. I assume that as non-native birds they and their nest are not protected. I don't believe the birds are at risk of any harm, but I doubt they could possibly move to a more accessible location. --Dave Nutter On Jun 21, 2014, at 01:39 PM, Lee Ann van Leer lavanl...@gmail.com wrote: We have confirmed a pair of Monk Parakeets building a nest in a barn on the Wickam Farm. The owner and son noticed the birds about 3 days ago. He contacted Kevin (McGown) to come and confirm. The farm is on 5559 Rt414. This is just North of Sunoco and South of Hector Vineyard. Go down Tango Oaks Road which looks like a double gravel driveway and it is the first barn in the right. The very kind owner welcomes bird watchers and I told him I'd suggest birders patronize the nearby Hazlitt and Hector vineyards in thanks. I'll post a video to the Cayuga Birds Facebook page shortly. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Fairgrounds Access
TMI on Seneca Falls and fairgrounds: There actually /is/ something called the Seneca County Fairgrounds, but they have nothing to do with the Lott Farms and in fact are in Waterloo, on the north edge of the village off Swift Street. Every year the Seneca County Fair is held there in mid-July. So far as I know there aren't any interesting birds there although there are lots of sheds on the property so, who knows, maybe Monk Parakeets have moved in! The Lott Farms used to be a working farm but for the last 25 years or so, it mostly has hosted Empire State Farm Days in early August each year. This is probably where the idea that it is a fairgrounds began, but that is just a private arrangement between the NYS Potato Growers Assn and the Lotts - Empire State Farm Days essentially is an Agricultural Expo by businesses who want to sell farming related stuff. Maybe the Lott Farm should be referred to by its own name to avoid confusion, just in case Parakeets do invade the real Seneca County Fairgrounds?
