Sunday, 12 April,

The Wells College boathouse provided:
50+ Horned Grebes close to the dock. Some in breeding plumage and
even began their courtship dance and song. Fabulous.
A Merlin, or possibly two, called off and on for about two minutes
from about 100 yds east of boatchouse and about 100 yds east of Rt 90
from direction conifer trees just northwest of the large/tall red
steeple and along the crescent-shaped, one-way road that passes through
part of Wells South Campus. Further info on hawks appreciated.

[cayugabirds-l] Jennings Pond, etc

2015-04-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
I had my scope in the car, so I made an impromptu stop at Jennings Pond this
morning. Three Phoebes were squabbling over a nest site under the eaves of the
restroom. Otherwise the scene was pretty placid. A couple of Bufflehead, a
handful of Ring-necked Ducks, the local Canada Geese. But I enjoyed seeing the
owners of the beaver lodge, who were out on their roof, taking the sun. Such
dark fur!

Half-way down Blakesly Hill, a Ruffed Grouse strolled across the road, without
any regard for my hurtling car, forcing me to come very near to a standstill.

I tried for Virginia Rail at Hillview Road; no luck yet. The Eagles at North
Spencer Marsh were hanging around their nest, until one flew off toward Spencer
Lake, at which point the other went to stand in the nest, and began tearing-up
a fish.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks

2015-04-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
I'm not sure what they'd do in a really ferocious windstorm, but normal windy
conditions shouldn't stop them. After all, the display is a show of fitness.

But wind might well make it harder for you to hear and observe them.

[cayugabirds-l] Lunch time Beebe lake

2015-04-13 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,
Beebe lake had a dozen or so male and female Buffleheads and one Pied-billed
Grebe. Also I saw a single Rough-winged swallow. And one migrating Red-tailed
Hawk.

I forgot to mention in my previous EIRW report of a Brown creeper and a very
good look at a Carolina Wren singing form a very low eye level branch.

[cayugabirds-l] EIRW birds

2015-04-13 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
As soon as i exited my driveway there was a Yellow-rumped warbler in my
neighbors yard.
As i was entering EIRW way at Strawberry Hill road, a Brown Thrasher flew in
front of me. At the Mitchell Street end there was a Purple Finch singing. I am
pretty confident i heard Pine Warbler singing from the tall pines.
In Maple Wood section there was a singing Ruby-crowned kinglet.
Not bad for a morning walk!

opportunity to look for some other newly arrived Louisiana Waterthrushes. I
found none at Upper Buttermilk, none at Lick Brook, and none at the top of the
gorge of the West Branch of Cayuga Inlet. But in the pines along Townline Road
just north of Lick Brook I did find a singing Pine Warbler.

I found a singing BLUE-HEADED VIREO and a HERMIT THRUSH by the shelter along
the East Trail in Sapsucker Woods on Monday morning.
