[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys

2020-04-01 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Daughter, Becky Sewell, has been out checking osprey nests at the north
end of Cayuga Lake from Aurora to MNWR &  on surrounding roads there &
in Union Springs areas. As of Tues. she had found at least 21 ospreys &
was told about 2 more Wed. 3/1 just south of Union Springs.

Her FOY O was at the Union Springs water dept. nest across from the high
school on Sun., 29 Mar. & she finished that day with 13 Os. That was the
first day she has been able to go out. She really has a long, complex
route she follows to check on nests & didn't get to all of them on Sun..

On Mon, 3/20, I had 2 juvenile bald eagles flying  here over Union
Springs Academy & 23 TVs just a bit WSW before heading down towards the
village to wherever their roost is. Someday I MIGHT find where the TVs
roost.

Fritzie, Union Springs.

[cayugabirds-l] osprey nest south of Covert?

2020-04-01 Thread Alicia Plotkin
For the past two years, osprey have nested on a cell phone tower that is
just south of the hamlet of Covert, on the east side of Rte 96.  When I
looked earlier this year, the nest seemed to be missing but I didn't
stop and check carefully until today.  There may be a few remnant
sticks, I'm not sure, but certainly the main structure is gone.  A lone
osprey was sitting on the tower, don't know if the mate also is back or
if they will try to rebuild it.

Anyone know what happened to the nest?  Did it blow down (seems unlikely
since it was well-nestled in the various girders) or was it removed?

There was a adult male Harrier flying over the fields between the junction of
Hanshaw and Friese road on my drive to work this morning. Some crows we’re
taking objection to it’s presence.

[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Ospreys: NW Newman Golf nest occupied & more

2020-04-01 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon I walked around Cass Park. I did not go to Allan H Treman State
Marine Park, so I don’t know about the platform north of the Hangar Theatre,
but I assume the nest in the field closer to the lake is still solidly
occupied.

Today I believe I saw 5 Ospreys.

My first view was a distant glimpse of an Osprey apparently chasing an immature
Bald Eagle. I did not see how that ended, so I’m not counting it. I may have
seen it again later on, anyway.

For most of the time there was 1 Osprey on the nest atop the lights in Union
Field. That’s #1.

Meanwhile I heard a low-flying Osprey (call this #2) calling, and I saw it was
carrying a small fish. And I noticed the local immature Bald Eagle was chasing
the Osprey. They circled up into sky for several minutes. The Osprey stayed
much higher than the Bald Eagle, and it got awkward to watch them because they
weren’t even in the same scope view when I quit. I guess the Osprey got to keep
the fish, but I don’t know how it got back down past the Bald Eagle.

Shortly after this I saw another Osprey carrying a longer fish while kiting
against the north wind over Newman Golf Course near the Inlet and calling
constantly, clearly showing off. This seemed too soon to be #2 with a different
fish, and it called more, so I’m calling it #3. I wondered who it was showing
off to, anyone nearby or anyone in particular? Then I looked at the nearest
nest platform at the NW corner of Newman Golf Course and there were already 2
Ospreys in that nest (#4 & #5). Did the show-off hope to gain a mate who
already had a mate and a nest?

As I walked south I checked the Union Fields nest and it still was occupied,
although I think an Osprey I saw flying shortly thereafter may have come from
that nest which was newly empty.

It’s hard to keep track of all the Osprey goings-on, but that’s my
interpretation.

[cayugabirds-l] A few West Danby birds

2020-04-01 Thread Geo Kloppel
At 7:00 am in my yard, I noticed a pair “P” of Eastern Phoebes foraging
together in the vicinity of the eaves under which they and their predecessors
have nested for decades.

In the late morning I watched a pair of Great Blue Herons begin construction of
a ninth nest out in the heronry by the West Danby Fire Station. I got to see
the presumed male bring up the very first stick and vainly attempt to find a
place to lodge it. Eventually his mate took charge of it, and he flew west into
the woods to find her another.

A Red-tailed Hawk on a near perch flew across the pond and into the forest
behind. Second time this week that I’ve seen this. I remember that a pair used
to nest back there on the wooded penninsula opposite the island. I figured this
rated an “H”.

But then in the early afternoon, as I was approaching the intersection of
Seeley Hill Road and Van Buskirk Road, I caught sight through trees of a
Red-tailed Hawk on the top of a utility pole. I raised my binoculars just as
she raised her tail, and suddenly there in my field of view was her mate: “C”
for copulation.

On Stevenson Road I was biking,
A meow from the hedge was most striking,
The tone wasn’t hoarse,
Not a catbird, of course,
Sapsucker! I said, to my liking.

But the next meow came out all flat,
It sounded just like... a house cat!?
Then some chirps, then a jeer,
The ID became clear,
‘Twas a mockingbird singing all that!

Yes, and it made me wonder if this heronry will soon meet the fate of the one
that used to occupy a wooded island in the North Spencer Marsh, until it was
appropriated by an Eagle pair.

> Thanks for sharing. I'm curious to know if and when you saw courtships

I wasn’t present for any displays, but I saw what I interpreted as a tandem
pair flight from the heronry on March 15th, and then on the 18th there were 6
in the heronry. Some of last year’s nests had fallen, but more construction is
now underway, and one heron is already incubating, two weeks in advance of the
April 15th egg date given in the old Atlas 2000 Breeding Season Tables. I
didn’t actually count the herons yesterday, but 16 is probably about right.

I’ve been hearing a Phoebe “S” for several days, but this morning it’s a pair
“P” of Phoebes on their traditional territory in my yard.

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: MOS:  COVID 19 Virus Alert

2020-04-01 Thread khmo
I thought you would like to see how Maryland birders are helping fight
the virus.

The status in Md is a stay at home "order" which imho makes more sense
than NY's verbiage.

That rookery on guard experience must have been something to see. Thanks
for sharing. I'm curious to know if and when you saw courtships
displays.

Birds here in the SW corner of the basin remains very slow with the
first woody pair arriving yesterday. We have yet to see a Phoebe or Tree
Swallow let alone a Chippy!

Be well everyone,
John

_Dear MOS Member,_

_You will have doubtless seen Governor Hogan's order* of yesterday to
stay at home and have wondered how it will impact your birding
activities. This advisory is for your guidance on that impact._

*
https://governor.maryland.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Gatherings-FOURTH-AMENDED-3.30.20.pdf
[1]

_The Governor's order does not mention birding as an allowed outdoor
activity, only __walking, hiking, running, or biking (section II (b)
(v)). MOS recommends that you only bird around your yard and nearby.
One should still follow the social distance guideline of keeping 6 feet
apart from others and being in groups of no more than ten._

_I know this will disappoint all birders, but the COVID-19 pandemic is
best fought by slowing down its spread and the Governor's order will
help achieve this goal. So, by staying at home or close to home, we will
be helping to save lives. A sobering thought._

_Take care and best regards,_
