[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles on Blakslee Hill Rd in Newfield

2023-04-28 Thread Tobias Dean
On my way up the hill from Rt 96/34 I saw a bald eagle in a tree and
then another one perched above the road. The second was an immature
eagle and it took off up the road, I followed it up the road driving
somewhat slowly. It flew about 90 meters along the tree covered
street, sometimes only 6-8' above the pavement before finding an
appropriate perch. Lucky no one was coming fast down the hill.

What a view of the eagle in flight, and I hope it learns to avoid
roads.

Wondering what this portends for me...

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Blue Jay migration

2023-04-28 Thread Geo Kloppel
Yesterday noon my feeders were briefly mobbed by about 15 Blue Jays, which I
took to be migrants, as the local Jays are already carrying nest material.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Jay migration

2023-04-28 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday in the late afternoon I saw a small quiet flock of 8 Blue Jays moving
eastward into the treetops of the northeast part of Allan H Treman State Marine
Park, a similar path to the migrating Black-capped Chickadees I reported
recently going around the southeast end of Cayuga Lake. This morning around
9:25am I saw a quiet flock of 32 Blue Jays flying north over the south end of
Cass Park, also clearly migrating. They were over a field approaching a woodlot
just above treetop level.

Blue Jays migrate in the daytime, and they fly quietly in rather spread-out
flocks, each bird keeping a distance of a several feet to a few yards from all
of its neighbors. They flap constantly in what looks to me like weak flight
aimed at conserving energy.

An interesting place to watch migrant Blue Jay flocks is around the Braddock
Bay banding station, where they must turn generally east in order to get around
Lake Ontario, but in that specific area must go southeast, leading so some
apparently confused and circuitous travel.

Migration is made when the wind is from a helpful direction, like today and the
day I saw the Chickadee movement, generally from the south.

In autumn I have watched Blue Jays fly south over the east end of Stewart Park,
presumably having been gathered and guided by Cayuga Lake’s diagonal “east”
shore, and over downtown Ithaca as well.

To me, it’s a thrill to see the migration phenomenon played out.

[cayugabirds-l] dead goldfinch - disposal

2023-04-28 Thread Alicia Plotkin

Hi,

Today we watched an obviously ill goldfinch gradually get sicker and it
just died a few minutes ago.  It seemed to keep up its appetite, and was
intermittently active, but it was puffed up and became uncoordinated,
walking like it was tipsy for a couple hours before it died.

Is there any reason anyone would want to test this bird?  I don't even
know if these symptoms are consistent with avian flu, and goldfinches
are not listed by USFW as having tested positive for avian flu so far,
but it could be that it is because they are less likely to be found and
submitted for testing.

Right now it is double-bagged and next to our garbage can, where it will
go if there is no reason to test it.  (I used a mask and gloves when I
approached it and bagged it.)

Thanks -

Alicia

Many years ago, in Connecticut, my father rescued a whole nest of barn swallow
babies, trying to be fledglings. The parents built a nest in his barn (lots of
them did so) and in this nest used fishing line. He watched them and when the
babies were ready to leave the nest, he found them lined up on the barn beam
with fishing line wrapped around their legs. There were 3 or 4. The parents
dive bombed him during the rescue but he painstakingly removed all the fishing
line from their legs. He also removed that nest because it had so much in it.
And as far as we knew, those babies all survived and flew successfully.

 Ingrid,

The unfortunate bird used an improperly disposed of mono-filament fishing line
in its nest and became entangled in it. Most likely the bird starved to death.
If it had young inside, they probably starved as well. At the Salt Point
Natural Area and Myers Park in Lansing, the Friends of Salt Point have
installed fishing line recycling containers to prevent such tragedies.
Fishermen use them to dispose of unwanted line and tackle. The Lansing Parks
Department graciously collects it and disposes it properly.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: Mystery fatality on Purple Martin House

2023-04-28 Thread Robyn Bailey
This looks like an entanglement to me. Sometimes birds bring materials to their
nests that are entanglement hazards (e.g., fishing line, thread, etc.) and they
end up getting tangled in it. I would suggest that this nest compartment be
cleaned out and the nest material removed and thrown away (in the trash, not on
the ground, particularly the offending material).

This is a good time to remind birders to always pick up loose fishing line,
baling twine, or anything else that seems long, loopy and capable of getting
wrapped around birds’ legs, necks, or wings. Ospreys and others are
occasionally seen putting such materials in their nests, as well as small birds
like sparrows, so think about scale when picking up these items (could it
entangle an Osprey? A swallow?). Last I checked, you can return spent fishing
line to Dick’s Sporting Goods, and there are receptacles for it at Salt Point
and a few other locations I’m not remembering).

Best,
Robyn Bailey
