Had a chance to go over and found a juvenile RTH nearby, looking very happy and 
flying well.  We believe with Glenn that this is the bird he saw.  Good news.

There is a RT Hawk at Ithaca College that appears to be injured.  The bird 
swooped past me on Textor Circle and then perched low on the Center for Natural 
Sciences Building.  The bird had no visible injury but appeared to have some 
difficulty flying.

over, straightish light colored beak. Smaller then a robin and sleeker.  Does

carpenter bee traps (hence bees) hanging from the porch.  I also thought it 
looked pink ... we had Indigo buntings, Baltimore Orioles and cardinals, so I 
was like .."Did I just see a pink bird?"  Sorry I'm not a birder and can't give 
you really good birder info. The Sedlaceks (Karel and Cynthia)  helped me 
identify the bird.”

We stopped by the Treman Marina (#59) nest this evening after work and were 
happy to see both Ospreys back in the area with the female in the nest.

The male started to fish but was drawn away by a banded, adult Bald Eagle over 
the inlet near the marina.  He gave chase with the eagle heading toward Jetty 
Woods.  Another BE in the trees across from the jetty on the west side of the 
inlet caught the eye of the female and she engaged and ultimately drove it west 
along the southern shore, returning to the nest.  The male caught a fish 
somewhere and re-engaged the first BE, pushing it west across the marina and 
the Hog Hole nest.  The male Osprey then ate its fish on a pole along the 
hillside trail on the west side of RT89.

Nests #60, 61, no Ospreys this evening.
Nest #62 (Union Fields) had an Osprey in the nest as we were leaving ~5:30PM.


Around 7:00PM we sighted an Osprey hover-fishing over Beebe Lake

This evening around 4:45 pm I discovered an Osprey on Rt. 90, south of the
Village of Cayuga. It was in the north lane in front of the Mennonite farm
across from the nesting platform. It was apparently if not obviously the
result of having been hit by a vehicle. Part of one wing  was severed.

After retrieving the bird and severed wing I deposited both near the base
of the nesting platform; it appeared to me to be a mature unbanded bird.
The remaining Osprey seem to be in distress as it called from the tower. I
was unable to file a report from the site not having an internet-connected
phone.

Two male Balt.ORIOLES in crabapple tree this a.m. plus a bonus bird, a RT 
Hummingbird, sampling a forsythia blossom. The oranges have been out for three 
days and today the hummmer feeder gets hung.
Every year we say the same thing, are the orioles' breast colors more intense 
this year or do we just have trouble registering in our brains such a dayglo  
dark orange hue?

This nest platform is installed atop one of several poles for lights for 
McGovern Fields, replacing (literally) a nest which Ospreys built atop the same 
pole, right? McGovern Fields occupy the NE corner of the fields between East

east end of the East Ithaca Recreationway.
KVS—The 2014 nest was atop the south center, double-side light pole at the 
McGovern Fields.  This caused the lights to be turned off for the duration of 
the nesting season.  Plans were made for a replacement location and through the 
efforts of a lot of folks a riser, built by the Musco Lighting Co was installed 
on the SW tower.

In case other Ospreys start nesting near Game Farm Road, maybe refering to 
McGovern Fields would be better, at least until another of those light poles 
gets built upon!
KVS—It is unlikely (that is the hope anyway) that another Osprey family will 
build on another of the poles at the fields—the outside poles are single-side, 
and the center double-sided poles now have bird-deterrents on them.  In 
addition, Olin and Olive spent considerable energy last season dissuading other 
Ospreys from the area.  Having said that, names are flexible and can be 
adjusted as needed.

The Ithaca reservoir and Commonland are along Six-mile Creek south of NYS-79, 
which is in the next drainage behind Snyder Hill and perhaps difficult to see 
from McGovern Fields, so was that really where you meant the Osprey flew?
KVS1—Yes. This was Olin’s pattern of behavior last year when going to Common 
Lands: circle over the tree line to make a threat assessment near the nest, fly 
west down Cascadilla, to East Hill and linger to assess the area, then turn 
south and head towards Six-Mile Creek.  Having chased him several times this is 
his typical pattern.  When Olive is in the nest he can make the roundtrip with 
a fish in 12 mins.  He sometimes does make the turn up Snyder Hill Rd.

How do you ID the birds as individuals? Is it an assumption based on gender 
(general plumage and relative size) and presence or behavior at the site, or 
are there specific characteristics of individual birds that you use?
KVS—Gender, based on plumage, Olin has no necklace, Olive has the lightest 
Necklace in the southern basin to-date.  Olin has a distinctive set of markings 
on the top and back of the head.  Absolutely behavior: Koi fish raided from 
Snyder Hill, NW tower, bite the fish, look both ways, drop part of fish, flying 
routes as described above.

I recently saw an Osprey perched beside the platform at the NW corner of Newman 
Golf Course and wondered if that indicated it was being used. Moments later I 
saw an Osprey flying from that direction toward Union Fields, so now I wonder 
if it was one of the Union Fields pair just checking it out. I don't know how 
you keep track of individuals.
Ospreys love to do things after a fashion—you do your best to learn them and id 
based on that.

number fledged from all these nests? And to think, in the middle of the DDT 
usage, there were no active Osprey nests in upstate New York. Sometimes we win

nests. These behaviors only last for a few weeks so enjoy them while you can.

All the established local osprey nests in the Ithaca (Union Fields, Treman 
Marina, and Game Farm Rd) and Lansing (Portland Point and Salt Point) areas 
have been reclaimed by their owners. The new platforms at Stewart Park, the 
Newman golf Course, and the two at Portland Point are still not occupied, but 
the season is just starting. However the platform on Myers Hill and the new one 
at Salt Point (now there are two) have both had ospreys bringing sticks to 
them. Whether they'll successfully establish nests and attract mates is still 
up in the air, but the prospects look good. Many of the nests from Union 
Springs to the Montezuma area were reclaimed by last weekend and I expect the 
rest to be occupied any day now.

If anyone sees any osprey nests on the west side of the lake, please send me an 
email with the location.

On the west side there are nests at Dean's Cove, on Footes Corners Rd in 
Interlaken, and at the Seneca Golf Club, but other than that, I haven't found 
any more. The shallow shelf where the ospreys can fish is narrower on the west 
side than on the east side and at the ends of the lake, but it still should 
support some ospreys. So far I have documented 53 nests around the lake, 
although I don't know yet how many of them will be used this year.

Karen Edelstein and I are developing an interactive Cayuga Lake Osprey Trail 
map showing the locations of the nests visible from public roads for every 
one's viewing pleasure. We should have it ready within the month so stayed 
tuned.

records, which Dave Nutter tirelessly updates, first records from previous 
years, and 10-year median arrival dates that I calculated based on the first 
records that I kept for 2000-2009. All of this information can be found at a

[cayugabirds-l] Ospreys at Union Field Mating in the Nest

In addition to the Osprey(s) lake fishing near the Treman Marina, two Os were 
fishing in the inlet yesterday afternoon around 4 PM.  Today as we speak, 2 Os 
are mating in Union Fields Nest and a second male just attempted to mate.  It

I was already headed to Myers this morning when I got word of a Blue-winged 
Teal being there. I didn't find it, but I did have a fine consolation prize: An 
OSPREY flew over me when I was near the lighthouse, last seen powering north 
over the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. As far as I know this is the first 
report in the Cayuga Lake Basin this year.

Last night there was decent (for early spring) bird echoes on the radar. That's 
2 days in a row now. We have had several new arrival species down here in the 
Binghamton area as well. Eastern Phoebe, Bonaparte's Gulls, Tree Swallows, lots 
of Rusty Blackbirds, yellow-rumped warblers all have arrived last couple days. 
Plus American Robins and Red-winged blackbirds are pretty much everywhere and 
in flocks.  I expect our first Osprey any time now

Yesterday with strong south winds in late AM many many turkey vultures were 
zooming at tree top level along the Lake Ontario shore line, heading east at

Bradfield.  I think what you are seeing is Ezra facing Beebe Lake.

to see it from Tower Rd.  I did not have my binoculars, and the angle and 
lighting were awkward - that's why I'm not absolutely positive.  But, it didn't 
seem like a redtail.  Had an overall dark grayish cast on its back, which is 
mostly what I  could see.  Just thought I'd mention it, as no one has recently 
reported the peregrines.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine, I think

There was a brief flyover/circle overhead by a Peregrine of BR as she sat on 
the top SE corner of Bradfield yesterday after work.  No dive bombing or 
talons.  The PEFA then continued on toward the Vet School area.   Ezra was 
sitting in the 2012 nest cup at the time and appeared unconcerned.  Not sure 
that the PEFAs have been driven off per se, as we haven't seen any recent 
confrontations.  We are assuming that the PEFAs may have made a play for 
territory earlier this winter when they (she) attempted to dive-bomb BR, talons 
down over at Humphreys unsuccessfully.  We're guessing that they have a scrape 
elsewhere to tend to / defend.

Good Morning,

Walking into work this morning in Beebe Hall a bit bleary eyed after arriving 
home in the early morning from Tucson Arizona I remembered to look up at 
Bradfield as I have been doing nearly every day for a month looking for the 
Peregrine Falcons.  To my astonishment I saw one bird sitting about 2/3 of the 
way up on the East side of the building pruning itself on the small ledge that 
juts out from the building.  Moments later the second bird appeared directly 
overhead looking amazing in the bright blue sky and landed about 30 feet from 
the other bird.  This was at approximately 9:30 a.m.

FW: [cayugabirds-l] Two local osprey nest protected

Good news!  We were down at this nest between 9:35 - 10:50 this morning and saw 
the following:

  *   both parents were in the nest and then flew off toward the lake
  *   in less than 10 minutes they both returned with a fish and enjoyed their 
meals on separate poles
  *   the male O defending his territory against an adult bald eagle
  *   nest building by both parents
  *   and hanging out in the nest

It appears that they have accepted the new NYSEG riser platform nest.  Many 
many thanks to all of you who helped to ensure the safety of this new family of 
Os!  We appreciate all of your efforts so very much!

I am very pleased to announce that the two local osprey nests, which were both 
potential fire hazards built on light poles, have been saved for the season and 
one permanently. On Monday, NYSEG was able to move the Union Fields near Cass 
Park osprey nest onto a riser without disturbing the birds, creating a 
permanently safe nesting platform. NYSEG to the rescue, again!

Yesterday, the power was cut to the light pole on which the ospreys are nesting 
at the Game Farm Road athletic fields. This is an excellent temporary outcome 
just in time for their egg laying, but a permanent solution needs to be 
arranged before they return next March. Thank you, Cindy and Karel Sedlacek for 
all your efforts and to CU facility manager Patrick Grahamfor your immediate 
attention and cooperation.

There are eight more nests that I am aware of that may present fire hazards, 
all built on NYSEG poles at the north end and northwest side of the lake. NYSEG 
is aware of these nests and will address those deemed hazardous. From my survey 
of nests on Cayuga Lake, I was impressed by the great amount of care and 
attention NYSEG pays to osprey nests in all service regions around the lake.

Thank you to all for your concern and help in protecting these osprey nests.

Haven't seen this mentioned but maybe someone is aware--a second Osprey nest 
has been built (or is in final stages) at Cass Park on one of the lights in the 
middle of the softball fields--reported by phone to the Lab today by an 
(almost) non-birder.
