[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes at Knox
After estimating 450 Tundra Swans and 8 Trumpeters at Armitage we went to East Road at 4:20. Two very large flocks of Sandhills all got up from the corn fields to the west at the same time and all flew in to Knox-Marcellus. As far as I know the minimum of 490 that I counted on 12/8 is the highest ever counted there. These 2 flocks appeared to be even more but were right overhead and impossible to put a number on. It was a phenomenal experience. If anyone is bored and wants to work on numbers and catch them staging in a field before flying to roost I bet it’s now closer to 600. Enjoy them before they leave! [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Main Pool mudflat.
Currently the main pool has lowered enough to allow for the whole SW area to be primarily mudflat. Today I could only find 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 12 Dunlin and a Wilson’s Snipe. Viewing is scope distance from the main pool observation platform. If I were a Godwit or Ibis I would be out there. A couple hundred GW Teal were there also but the main pool waterfowl are too distant from the tower. [cayugabirds-l] Mucklands large gulls
At Knox-Marcellus overlook looking at several hundred Tundra Swans I noticed a steady stream of Herring Gulls going toward Cayuga Lake at around 4:15. I got down to the mucklands as many birds left but in a 15 minute scan found 2 Adult and a second year Lesser Black-backed plus a first year Iceland among the approximate 1000 remaining gulls. I wish I got there an hour earlier. The flocks looked like Snow Geese(none)in numbers as they were leaving. [cayugabirds-l] Snow Goose estimate methodology.
Here is my ebird checklist from yesterday to give people an idea how I came up with 400k: Lower Lake Rd., S of Cayuga Lake SP Mar 17, 2021 1:42 PM Traveling 1.60 miles 130 Minutes All birds reported? No Comments: Submitted from eBird for iOS, version 2.4.1 Build 2.4.35 40 Snow Goose -- Estimated two ways. First, I used my odometer to determine the length of the flock along the road as 1.6 miles. Then I randomly counted one row of geese straight out which averaged 100. Figuring one row every 2 feet comes out to 422,400. Second, I used Google Earth to draw a closed area on the map that the flock occupied. This came out to 444,519 square meters. Using one bird per square meter to arrive at 444,519. Those densities may be high so I rounded down to 400,000. That being said there was another quite large raft in the middle of the lake that I did not work on. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma crane breeding success?
The numbers of Sandhill Cranes are now about double any previous year by my marginal memory’s recollection. The highest I remember 2 years ago was around 127 (but eBird search experts can correct me). If y happy just enjoying the beautiful flock stop reading.! Based on this year’s nesting stories that I either saw, heard or read about the refuge didn’t contribute much. First, I read of a pair that had 2 young near the main pool observation tower. That went down to one young then I heard none. The DEC staff told me that a pair at Morgan road had one bird disappear long enough to hopefully incubate but rejoined the other with no young in tow. The Carncross Road pair appeared together often but no baby. Joann and I found one on a nest at the Sandhill Crane unit. They hatched one young but that bird disappeared a short week later. Finally a pair at Knox showed up with a fledgling and as far a I know that was the only refuge success. I hope others have better stories as I heard talk of pairs on Howland Island and at the MAC. The first post nesting gathering at Knox that I saw were consistent with this as I remember a dozen with 1 juvenile. Then they came from everywhere apparently. Yay! This number also starts concerns with me about potential future hunting. I don’t know where our birds winter but know that the eastern population can be hunted in Tennessee, Kentucky and starting last year Alabama. Its pretty unlikely that the hunters here won’t want to shoot the “ribeyes of the sky” so start campaigning to have them protected! [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma today.
Joann and I took a ride though Montezuma this afternoon and had a great time. The south end of the visitor center was busy. We hadn’t heard of the Hudsonian Godwit in a couple days so were very happy to find it along the sw edge. There were good numbers of both Yellowlegs and Pectoral Sandpipers along that edge but those numbers jumped up when the flock hidden in the channel to the south flew up. It included 3 Stilt Sandpipers. They and the Godwit worked that way and out of sight. A Black-bellied Plover landed on the sw shore which also held 4 Snipe. An American Bittern worked in and out of the reeds there. Numbers of Wigeon and Pintail are growing there and on the main pool. The open water in the north end of Larue Lagoon had our days highlight. Joann picked out an Otter working the edge there! Our third ever on the refuge. It turned sharply and lunged out after a fish and in doing that it chased a Least Bittern up from the reeds into plain sight. The Sandhill Crane population is starting to grow at Knox-Marcellus and is up to 33. It’ll be interesting to see if they continue there with no water. [cayugabirds-l] Geneva Snow Bunting and no Yellow-Headed Blackbird
This afternoon Joann and I rode from Geneva to Canoga then up 89 to East Road. Along the south side of Lerch Road, around 2 pm, just east of Goldsmith Road in Geneva we came upon a HUGE flock of Snow Buntings. I had a very large flock along Yellow Tavern Road last week NE of there that I carefully estimated at 2700. Today’s flock was at least double that. I measured the approximate area the flock covered on Google Earth and came up with 22,000 square meters. If there was one bird per square meter that would be the number. We would put the minimum at 5000 but believe it was more than that. They circled high and flew to the SW out of sight. On to Canoga with no Gyrfalcon. Up to 89 and East Road. A couple dozen Cowbirds and Red-wings were in treetops at the north end of East around 4 pm but no Yellow-Headed Blackbirds. Similar flocks behind houses on Olmstead and Mays Point Roads. A couple dozen Pintail have arrived at Cayuga Lake at Lower Lake Road. [cayugabirds-l] No Ruff/Reeve. Yes Pelican
This evening we made an attempt at the Port Gibson Ruff and Reeve at Maiden Lane and Towpath. We only found 3 Lesser and 4 Greater Yellowlegs and watched the Lessers fly off to the NE. On to the main pool at Montezuma, the White Pelican was feeding comfortably among the 2000ish Canvasbacks with a few Ruddy Ducks mixed in. A basic plumage Dunlin flew in to the visitor center pool around 5:00 and the Ross’s Goose continued at the back of Eaton Marsh along the wildlife drive. The 5 Great Egrets at Tschache Pool included a yellow wing tagged bird numbered 29x. Yesterday at 3 pm. There were 49 on the north side of rte. 89 just east of the East Rd. Junction. 16 on Armitage near Olmstead and 9 in Knox-Marcellus. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Red-necked Phalarope and more.
This afternoon Dominic Sherony and a I visited the Martens Tract overlook for the previously reported Red-necked and Wilson's Phalaropes seen as recently as this am. We found the Red-necked but no Wilson's. The water level was up a lot from the day before and birds were leaving as we watched. 1 Stilt and 1 White-rumped Sandpiper were the remaining highlights. A Merlin passing through twice didn't help. An American Bittern flushed from the grasses along the dike to the east. On to the main pool. The visitor center "pond" had been partially plowed and is waiting for water. The highlight along the first leg of the wildlife drive was the 24(at least) Bald Eagles perched on just about every snag along the river. This combined with 15 more at Knox-Marcellus marsh was amazing. We did not scan nesting sites and only saw 1 adult so many more out there somewhere. The main pool had good numbers of American Wigeon newly added to the couple hundred Coot. Benning Marsh had good habitat with 1 White-rumped and several Stilt sandpipers giving close views. Along the thruway a Peregrine Falcon harassed a Harrier then failed at a pass at a small flock of Peep overhead. The north end of Knox-Marcellus marsh was very birdy! The water was up a lot from the weekend and waterfowl numbers were back up to earlier numbers but with greater numbers of Am. Wigeon and Northern Pintail joining the increasing Teal and Mallard numbers. Lesser Yellowlegs and Pectoral Sandpiper groups arrived and left as we watched. We found another Red- necked Phalarope for the highlight but lost it in the Eagle caused shuffles. Great habitat so it should be a great spot with the upcoming weather changes. Dominic has entered ebird checklists. [cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon, Snowy Owls continue
This afternoon after passing the Seneca Stone Quarry, twice scanning the complex from Hoster Road between 2:30 and 3:00 with no luck, I returned one more time around 3:30 to find Josh Snodgrass and friend with the bird perched in the trees over the Quarry. 3 Snowy Owls were still visible from the south end of the airport and the "queen" Snowy was atop the grainery at the Lott farm on 414. Another Snowy continues in the area of route 96a and Kime Road east of Geneva although today it was only visible from Nelson Road looking north.
