[cayugabirds-l] White-winged Turkey Vulture

2019-03-25 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning at 9:50am as I drove east on NYS-366 through Varna, I saw a/the
white-winged Turkey Vulture soaring rather low near the intersection with
Freese & Mt Pleasant Roads. Since the taxi was empty, I was able to pull over
and get a binocular view.

On the right wing it only a single white feather, the outermost primary, that
is the leading edge. All of the other flight feathers on the right wing were
normal (silver below), and the right wing lining was also normal, solid
blackish brown.

But one the left wing all the primaries were white except a single darker one
among them about 4th or 5th from the leading edge. Under the left wing there
was a round patch of dark feathers at the base of the primaries separated by
whitish from the rest of the dark normal wing lining.

Just now I can’t find any photos of the white-winged Turkey Vulture from
several years ago, but this bird reminded me very strongly of that bird. If
anyone has photos of that bird, or recalls the last time it was sighted, or
also saw this bird lately, I would be interested.

[cayugabirds-l] white-winged Turkey Vulture

2013-04-27 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
Larry and I went up the lake today for a leisure day of birding. While
we really didn't see anything out of the ordinary we had 'our' first
glimpse of the (a) white-winged Turkey Vulture seen soaring about a mile
north of King Ferry on route 90. However, we did see some 'rare
birders'--Susan Danskin and Ann Mitchell, who will report if they saw
anything unusual.

[cayugabirds-l] white-winged Turkey Vulture white American Robin

2012-03-04 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon I had the occasion to be in Dryden with a couple of hours to spare. In between snow flurries I saw a few birds, the most notable of which were coincidentally white. On Ferguson Road and moving between Mill Street and NYS-38 among a mixed flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS and AMERICAN ROBINS (with a couple BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES thrown in) was a Robin whose upper parts were nearly white, especially the wings and tail, rather than the typical slate gray. Its breast, however was within the normal range of pink for a female. While traveling on Stevenson Road I paused to glance at the Cornell compost piles and saw, cruising low, the WHITE-WINGED TURKEY VULTURE. Its left primaries are totally white, as are its outermost right primary and a small patch on the underside of each wrist. If this bird travels out of our area, I hope somehow we continue to get reports about it.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] White-winged Turkey Vulture at Cornell compost

2011-12-11 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon (Sunday 11 Dec) on our way to not seeing the long-gone White-winged Crossbills at Summerhill, Ann Mitchell I stopped by the Cornell compost facility off Stevenson Rd, where Nate Senner said he saw the juvenile Thayer's Gull asleep behind a Herring Gull, but not readily identifiable from our vantage. The highlight for us was the Turkey Vulture with all its left primaries white and its outermost right primary also white. It was flying low over the compost facility as were several normal Turkey Vultures. There were also several of them on the piles, but we did not see the odd one on the ground.--Dave Nutter
