A common sight in Kansas, where we are from. They are fun to watch, and so
cool to see them dive to the point of making, what I call "thunder". I
would love to see them again!

[cayugabirds-l] Cedar waxwings fly catching?

2021-08-13 Thread madonna stallmann
Hello!
My husband and I were at the bridge over Upper Taughanack Falls at
Taughanack State Park today and observed something we've never seen in our
thirty years of birding...a flock of cedar waxwings fly catching from the
trees alongside the creek out over the top of the falls. 15 - 20 birds
repeatedly flying out over the falls & in to the trees presumably catching
bugs.
All my information tells me that cedar waxwings are not so enthusiastic
about insects. I would like to know if anyone else has observed this and
what information you have about cedar waxwings fly catching.
Thank you!

[cayugabirds-l] Hummers

2021-09-16 Thread madonna stallmann
We have two hummingbirds hanging out at our place, still. We believe that
they are the offspring of a male and female who departed a week and a half
ago.
I know that the animals know better than I do about when it's the best time
to go south, but does anyone have ideas why these young'ns didn't leave at
the same time as the other two? Also, aren't they supposed to be in Texas
by now, bulking up & preparing for the trip across the gulf? I'm a little
worried about them "wasting time" here.
What's your thoughts?

See the link below for more information about the deal.

I'm confused, (and I know I risk displaying how completely ignorant I am
about how these deals work) why does the FLLT have to raise $500,000 for
land that New York bought from NYSEG? Why is FLLT still having to deal with
NYSEG?

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: Finch conjunctivitis in Newfield area

Subject: [CHCV] Finch conjunctivitis
To:

Hi all,

I’m on mid-Rockwell Rd and have noticed once again like last September an
outbreak of conjunctivitis in our house and gold finches.

We’ve pulled all our feeders down and I’m going to attempt to trap any
birds I can and take them up to Cornell Wildlife. It’s easily treated. I
brought them seven birds last Fall and all were released. They are happy to
accept them. Also, I usually give them a small donation for each animal I
drop off.

It’s important to keep feeders cleaned when it’s as damp and humid as it’s
been.

If you’re nearby, or anywhere in the area and have feeders up, keep an eye
on the finches. It’s pretty easy to catch them when their eyesight is
impaired.

I def recommend pulling them down for a month or so and return them
cleaned.

Thanks!

Julie

Re: [cayugabirds-l] T Vulture

2022-05-13 Thread madonna stallmann
Hi Donna!

My! What a dilemma! This brings up questions in my mind about the migratory
bird act. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, we are legally
(if not morally) bound to protecting the nests of migratory birds. So, you
could tell the prospective buyers, "I'm legally bound to protecting these
birds until they fledge, then steps will be taken to keep the birds from
using the structure next year."
Those who know more about these things please jump in here!

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds - abandoned nest

2022-07-28 Thread madonna stallmann
Hello Bird Friends!

For two years in a row now our bluebird box neighbors have abandoned their
nest of baby birds. ☹️. We're new to this job of providing shelter for
bluebirds. We're puzzled by this behavior of abandoning what appears to
have been a once healthy brood, so questions abound: Why? Was there not
enough bugs? Did something happen to the adults? Were they overwhelmed by
heat? etc., etc..
If you have any answers or suggestions for how we can help our bluebird
neighbors to thrive, I'm all ears.

We saw what I think was the last hummer migrant here near Newfield on
Saturday 9/30. Our summer male hummers left about a month ago, while the
females and/or youngsters left 2 weeks ago. It's been a visit here and
there from what I assume to be migrants since then.

Thanks Susan!
Very interesting! When I called Home Depot they said they were out of
stock.
I had no idea that my birding club members would actually shop for me!  I
love this listserv!

[cayugabirds-l] Acopian Bird Savers for windows

2023-01-11 Thread madonna stallmann
Hello Bird Lovers!

We are putting together plans for making Acopian Bird Savers for our
windows. We've run into a problem with accessing the vinyl j channel.
They're only available by the case which is more than we need. Have any of
you made your own Acopian window "dressings"? Would you happen to have
extra j channel laying around? OR Is there anyone on this list who would be
interested in going in on a case of j channel to make your own Acopian bird
savers?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Acopian Bird Savers for windows

2023-01-11 Thread madonna stallmann
In reply to Sandras response. Yes. They can be made without j channel, but
making the top with paracord presents other complications that make it
impractical for us. J channel is the best procedure for our situation, as
long as I can obtain it in less than case quantity.

Thank you. I have already done all the internet searches. In the end they
have turned up "dried" mealworms only, not "live" mealworms. Shipping live
mealworms is expensive and stressful on the live larvae (translate:
mortality). I thought/hoped that local bluebird enthusiast might know
something that google didn't. I'm still hoping. 

[cayugabirds-l] Downies at the hummingbird feeder 

2023-05-27 Thread madonna stallmann
We have two downy woodpeckers sucking up large portions of the contents in
our hummingbird feeders. I can't imagine that the sugar water is good for
the woodpeckerswhich is bad enough but these guys are drinking
SUPERSIZE amounts. Any suggestions for how I can keep the downies away but
still support the hummers?

Thanks in advance!

[cayugabirds-l] Live mealworm larvae available for your bluebirds

2023-05-30 Thread madonna stallmann
Hello bird friends!

Our bluebird family has moved on and are no longer answering the dinner
bell . We have quite a few live mealworm larvae in our refrigerator with
no plans for putting them on our menu. 

Is there anyone who is currently supplementing a bluebird family's diet and
could use the extra ones that we have? OR do you know of anyone with a pet
that eats them and would want these?

Please contact me off list at madonnaoftheprai...@gmail.com with
any questions or answers about this.

Thank you!

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds have fledged the nest.

2023-05-11 Thread madonna stallmann
Big news in Newfield ... five little eastern bluebird fledgelings emerged
from the blue bird nest box outside our window this morning!

We have been supplementing their diet with live mealworm larvae since mid
April. It seems to have helped. Adults had attempted, unsuccessfully, to
fledge a brood for the last two years. This year they have five young ones
on the wing as of this morning!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Question on local sunflower seed

2023-12-15 Thread madonna stallmann
You can get quality local sunflower seeds directly from the farmers on
Buffalo Rd., Caroline. Snow family farm. Someone in this group posted the
contact info about a month ago. I no longer have their contact info. Does
anyone in this group have that number?

provide suggestions for the best possible way to observe puffins while we

Re: [cayugabirds-l] The Taughannock light show has been canceled!

2024-04-15 Thread madonna stallmann
Very good news! 樂 I wonder how many calls they received? I called the
number you provided (the finger lakes regional office) and directly to the
park. Did they really not know about the nesting peregrines until today?
I'm very glad they've decided against it and hope they consider celebrating
the 100th anniversary in a way that is more respectful of the grandeur of
nature than an invasive, disturbing light show.
