[CentOS] FF60 does not allow download to ssh/davs

2018-07-23 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

this concerns fully updated Centos7 / Mate machines;
I have people connect to ssh en davs locations. In /home/user/.gtk-bookmarks I
put entries like
ssh://192.168.1.8/data data-remote

People can then click on the bookmark in the file manager and connect to it.

Since FF60 people can no longer save files for instance from their mailbox to
these "mounted" locations. Before, when choosing "save as", the mounted ssh
location would
appear in the download window.

I guess this is not a bug but something one can disable/enable in about:config.

Many thanks for any advise on this.

greetings, J.

Interesting.  I get the following errors from my external monitor
plugged into a USB C port on a Dell XPS 9360.  This is under Ubuntu
18.04, kernel  4.15.0-23-generic.  When I unplug and replug the USB C
cable, the error goes away, but I don't believe it is a cable or
connector problem.  Most of the time the external monitor works even
with these errors, but occasionally I have to reboot to get it to work.
Biggest problem is it takes a long time to boot when it gets these errors.

[CentOS] usb problem on Dell Latitude 3570

2018-07-02 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

after update to Centos7.5 all our Latitudes 3570 - some 150- suffer usb
problems.
Plug and play doesn't work any more, people need to insert usb devices - mouse,
keyboard, eidreader - first and then boot
in order to use them.

dmesg | tail -n15 gives these EM:

[ 25.164396] usb 1-8: device descriptor read/64, error -110
[ 25.418387] usb 1-8: new full-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd

[ 58.300448] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: ERROR mismatched command completion event

Googling this is see some posts with similar problems, but none on Centos7 and
none resolved.
I suppose this is some driver-shift-update in Centos7.5.
We are running MATE desktop, if that could be an issue

Many thanks for any advise.

[CentOS] Centos7 update: epel no route to host

2018-05-11 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I' have a laptop who's not booting to graphical screen today.
Actualy I had several the last few days, related to cr repo.

This one won't update, EM:

updates | 3.4 kB 00:00:00
epel/x86_64/updateinfo FAILED
https://mirror.ynet.sk/epel/7/x86_64/repodata/3ada5bcbccaa9772074a773b15bd01dd48e753a184ebecfed590de6c389ada03-updateinfo.xml.bz2:
[Errno 14] curl#7 - "Failed connect to mirror.ynet.sk:443; No route to host"

I reinstalled epel-release package, same issue remains.

I guess I could update without epel, but maybe this will make things worse.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I get more problems,
I have not single i686 arch package installed yet 'yum
update' somewhere along the lines decides and insists on
pulling in plenty of i686 packages. All this without really
telling why, then fails with 'multilib' problem.
I cleaned/removed yum's cache, rebuilt rpm database.
And while yum does that it shows lots of conflicts.
It seems like a serious cockup, current state of CR repo.

Hello All,

I'm having troubles today as well,
laptops are not booting to graphical login.

When running yum update I get EM:

Three suggestions:

1. Have you tried atril? Does it have the same problem?

2. Can you post a sample pdf somewhere so folks who might know how to fix it
can see an example?

3. I posted a bug report along with a sample pdf some years back to the evince
bug tracker (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/) and the problem pdf rendered
perfectly when the next version was released.

Subject: [CentOS] update to Centos7.4: Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi -
Not Found

Hello All,

updating from Centos7.3 to Centos7.4 rendered one of our laptops unbootable.
EM:
Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi - Not Found
Failed to load image \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi: Not Found
start_image() returned Not Found

How could this occur because of an update and how to fix this?

What I tried is booting from centos usb, chroot to /mnt/sysimage and gave
command:
efibootmgr --create --label CentOS --disk /dev/sda1 --loader
"\EFI\centos\shim.efi"

This gave no EM, but booting remains impossible.

I have to say I don't know whether to try grub2 of efibootmgr commands.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Johan

I remember I had a similar issue and I resolved it by copying grubx64.efi from
/centos :
cp /boot/efi/EFI/centos/grubx64.efi /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT

thanks for helping me out.
That didn't fix the system. The EM has changed though, it now simply says " no
bootable device".

[CentOS] update to Centos7.4: Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi - Not Found

2018-01-09 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

updating from Centos7.3 to Centos7.4 rendered one of our laptops unbootable.
EM:
Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi - Not Found
Failed to load image \EFI\BOOT\grubx64.efi: Not Found
start_image() returned Not Found

Greetings, J.

I ran into this conflict problem when upgrading machines running
Mate. I found that removing the epel version of libgpod and
installing the one that is currently in base (0.8.2-12.el7) fixed the
upgrade issue. I did a "yum erase", which took out some things
(including rhythmbox) that one might still want. I didn't do a "yum
downgrade" nor have I tried to reinstall rhythmbox, so don't know how
things fare going those routes.

If your "window" issue is what's described at:

switching your theme, as indicated, should fix that.

Other than these items I haven't had any problems running Mate on
7.4.1708 - on machines that used @CR and those that didn't.

Johnny an Richard,

thanks for the quick replies!

I just did a few installs using kickstart and indeed, no troubles on new
installs.
Updating from Centos7.3 using the libgpod method described by Richard also
works.
That is less of a hassle then removing libimobiledevice.

Thanks for helping me out today.

Greetings, J.

2017-09-15 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Update on previous:
I now see there is an update "mate-themes" that fixes the NetworkManager-icon
problem on already updated laptops.
Updating from 7.3 to 7.4 remains hampered by libimobiledevice.

Hello All,

this problem occured both before the release with CR repo and now after the

I have 150 laptops running Centos7 / MATe, including my own laptop.

libimobiledevice and reinstall:

[CentOS] Centos7 - Mate : screensaver troubles after Freeipa-config

2017-08-10 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

these days one of my tasks is connecting some Centos7 laptops to Freeipa, also
running on Centos7.
After doing that, some users report nog being able to unlock their screens.
Only after reboot are they able to login again.

I see this em in /var/log/secure:

Aug 10 13:34:37 mate-screensaver-dialog: pam_sss(mate-screensaver:auth):
authentication failure; logname= uid=382900663 euid=382900663 tty=:0.0 ruser=
rhost= user=*
Aug 10 13:34:37 mate-screensaver-dialog: pam_sss(mate-screensaver:auth):
received for user **: 17 (Fout tijdens het instellen van
legitimatiegegevens van gebruiker)
Aug 10 13:34:37 mate-screensaver-dialog: gkr-pam: the password for the
login keyring was invalid.

Out of the 50 people or so I now have connected to Freeipa, I received some 5
reports.
All users are on fully updated Centos7 machines configured with epel-provided
Mate desktop.

I see a lot of these problems when googling this, but none in Centos.

Help would be very much appreciated.

[CentOS] Centos7 System Storage Manager: Device /dev/sdc not found

2017-08-02 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I 've gotten myself into trouble by running out of disk space.
On an all-in-one Ovirt system some users have filled up a Windows7 virtual
machine and in doing so filled up an nfs mount and in doing so
filled up a root partition:

B estandssysteem Grootte Gebruikt Besch Geb% Aangekoppeld op

I tried to remedy that today by using ssm to add storage. I added an extra disk
witch shows up as sdc:

now adding /dev/sdc to pool centos fails with:

[root@hotelcaw ~]# ssm add -p centos /dev/sdc
Device /dev/sdc not found (or ignored by filtering).
Unable to add physical volume '/dev/sdc' to volume group 'centos'.

I did a format 0 on the hard drive that makes up /dev/sdc with:

I suspect I need to prepare it further before it can be added.

Can anyone advise me on this issue?

[CentOS] Centos7: Intel nuc/Linksys usb-ethernet

Hello All,

I'm installing some DIY routers, composed of Intel nuc's ,Linksys usb-ethernet

On most machines I just plug in the usb device, install Centos7 and everything
works.
But on this one machine the network interface doesn't work.

After installing ip addr shows:

[CentOS] Centos7: disable hot-corner

2017-01-18 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I switched some laptops over from Mate to Gnome.
Now I would like to disable the hot -switch-to-gnome3- corner.
When googling this, I see a lot of posts referring to /usr/share/gnome-shell/js
/.. but the js dir is not there on my system.
I also see posts referring to gnome-extensions, but I need to do it remotely
from the cli.

Can anyone help with this?

Hello All, Hello Rob and Anax,

best wishes to all in 2017

Rob, I had no issues installing Adobereader. I don't have libpangox installed.
I will test the install again on a new system.
Anax, Master Pdf Editor looks brilliant. It opens the pdf's without Em. But in
order to sign pdf's, one needs to buy a 60 euro license.
But it is a solution, be it a costly one.

[CentOS] Adobereader on Centos7 crashes

2016-12-31 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I can't get Adobe Reader to run stable on Centos7, when trying to edit settings
or trying to print, it crashes.
The issue is people need to digitally sign pdf forms. When I open these forms
with anything else then Adobereader, I get EM

To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF
viewer. You can upgrade
to the latest version of Adobe Reader from
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

I spent a lot of time trying to solve this with other pdf viewers, including
google-chrome and Foxit, and trickery with ps2pdf and Pdfedit. Nothing works.

I installed Adobereader following this:
https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2010/install-adobe-acrobat-pdf-reader-on-fedora-centos-red-hat-rhel/

The signing of these forms is vital to my organization, so any help would be
appreciated.

My wife sometimes puts files on her desktop to work with them, then
cut-and-pastes the file to put it into a folder when she's done.

This morning she has seven files on her desktop that she has worked on over the
course of the past week. They have suddenly, overnight, moved out of the
folders that she had put them into and moved onto her desktop! They are no
longer in the folders that she put them into.

I told her to log out and log back in since I'm guessing that the Caja file
manager may be somehow at fault.

Does anyone have any ideas about what else it could be? Some kind of
cross-linking on her hard drive?

the only time I had something like that - I yum installed some things and after

Not sure why you need to skip those, they install and work on my system.

One of those packages actually does have a bug right now, xl2tpd I think
(required by libreswan) where it specifically requires a kmod that is
provided by the kernel package but yum doesn't see it.

Hello,

2016-12-26 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I have this problem starting Centos7.3 - the official name escapes me at the

I often install Centos7 Minimal, then X Window System, then Mate desktop.
This last step gives me trouble, and I have to run
# yum groupinstall mate --skip-broken

output:
skipped packages:

ldns
libreswan
unbound-libs
xl2tpd

I realise this is probably an issue for EPEL or Mate.

There is no reason to keep the CentOS Kernel on your machines if the
elrepo kernel is what you want to use.

You should be able to (1) boot from an elrepo kernel then do:

rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort

then pick out the CentOS kernels and do:

rpm -e

where and are the name-version of the kernel you want
to remove.

Then you should not get updates for the CentOS Kernels, only for elrepo
ones.

The advice Jim gave you will then allow an update of 'kernel-ml' to
actually update the grub.

One thing to think about is that you need to update some other packages
besides kernel to use the latest kernels on CentOS. These include
xfsprogs, where without the new fsck.xfs, you can not properly fix
errors in an xfs file system. See this bugL

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1314605

You can get a fairly updated kernel and xfsprogs (and a new supermin and
some other packages here):

http://mirror.centos.org/altarch/7/experimental/x86_64/Packages/

You can exclude the kernel and just grab the xfsprogs if you want as well.

My plan is to update that repo to the latest 4.4.x periodically while
the 4.4 tree is in LTS. I will move that branch to another kernel once
LTS 4.4 support stops.

NOTE: I am not suggesting that kernel is better than any of the elrepo
kernels, nor am I trying to compete with those kernels. I created this
kernel for arm32 and i686 (and possibly aarch64) for the altarch SIGs so
that we can support newer IoT products .. I also intend to build the
x86_64 because we can and to give IoT users the ability to have the same
kernel across several arches. I love elrepo and use it on several
machines .. either choice is absolutely fine :)

Thanks,
Johnny Hughes

Hello Johnny,

thanks for the reply.
I 'll try that kernel first and test if that fixes the issue on the laptops, I
think it will.

I believe you need to update /etc/sysconfig/kernel to set the 'default'
kernel package to be the kernel-ml or whichever elrepo kernel you're using.

Hello Jim,

thanks for the reply.
For some reason that doesnt' work.
To test this I booted from an older kernel and removed the most recent
Centos-kernel
After installing Elrepo's kernel-ml the system boots from kernel-ml, with or
without changing /etc/sysconfig/kernel to
DEFAULTKERNEL=kernel-ml
But after running an update again, and reinstalling the latest Centos kernel,
the system boots from that kernel again.

Greetings, J.

[CentOS] always boot from Elrepo kernel

2016-09-22 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I purchased some Dell Latitude 3570 laptops. They came with Ubuntu
preinstalled. ( Which I swapped for Centos7)
I have to use Elrepo kernel on these machines to get some of the fn function
keys to work.
So I installed Elrepo's kernel-ml and selected this kernel with:
# grub2-set-default 0
( after disabling secure boot)

The problem I see is that after a next kernel update, the new Centos kernel
will be nr 0 and the machine will
boot from that kernel if I tested this correctly.

Is there a way I can enable elrepo kernel update but not the regular Centos
kernel?

Many thanks, J.

Basically in order to boot from the network you need the contents of
os/$arch/images/pxeboot/ for your system architecture. You can then use
kickstart to point to a media you want to use for the actual installation.
This can be that of cdrom, url, nfs, etc. You pass the kickstart parameter to
your client using the 'ks=' parameter. the installation media can be from a
local rsync of the CentOS repository (to save money) or to a mirror of your
choice that may be local to you. Feel free to ask any questions.

Hello All,

although this post is a few weeks old;
following the advise to use http and to use the ks= parameter, I was able to
set this up.

So with the help of some volunteers we set up a Centos-install-fest here at
work and
installed some 30 laptops in an hour.

(More would have been possible, the limited factor was the number of Internet
cables I could muster.)

So many thanks.

[CentOS] Centos7 kickstart & pxe

2016-08-18 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I'm trying to get kickstart to work through pxe.
So far I've set up dhcp server, tftp and so on.
But it seems at some point I always get stuck because the iso file is
write-protected.

I've tried remounting it rw, and I 've dd the iso first, I then get EM not a

Any help would be appreciated.

Johan, does LO 4.2 on C7 has a "digital signatures" tab in "export to pdf"? I
don't see it in 4.2.8.2-11.el6

Thanks

Patrick,

I work with Mate.
There is no digital signatures tab in "export to pdf". (I'm now in LO4.3)
But in LO it's in "File" somewhere underneath " export to pdf"

Assuming your MATE packages come from Epel, have you tried to report
that bug "upstream" so that it can be reviewed/fixed for all other

[CentOS] Mate-update breaks locale

2015-09-28 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

today's Mate-updates seem to have removed our nl_be locale.
We run Mate desktop on some 15 Centos7 laptops.

Not so big a deal, we can easily switch to nl_nl or people would still figure
it out in English.
But maybe for other, not so common locales, you might want to check before
updating.

Maybe (i'm not running centOS on my desktop) it will help to install
mesa-dri-drivers. This package contains the missing library.

Hello,

on the two machines I run Chrome ( one user needs it, the other for testing )
this works again, I think because
of the Selinux update a few hours ago.

The bugzilla I think concerns this problem is nog updated however.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. I can't say I'm happy that someone else is
having the same problem, but I'm relieved that it's not just something
odd with the setup I am using.

Any luck? I'm hoping to have a chance to look more into this myself in
the next few weeks once some other projects calm down. Ironically my
next step was going to be going after an updated video card driver.

Hello Deoren,

adding elrepo and installing kmod-nvidia seems to have solved the issue.
I hope this works for you as wel.

We also saw some problems with recent Dell machines with “SpeedStep” or
whatever Intel calls their power/speed management these days.

One developer measured a very significant increase in speed after completely
disabling support for it in his kernel on multiple Linux variants.

I don’t have the details from him, but he said the system went from “almost
unusable on a daily basis”, to, “I can actually get things done”.

He mainly uses it as a desktop replacement, so he didn’t care about any
benefits from power management to save battery, etc.

Very “informal” note… I don’t have the data to turn in bug reports, or time to
chase it down.

He shared what he did informally with a couple of other devs and “hallway
discussions” have indicated that they also agreed that they had better
performance from the machines.

 Hello All,

this problem got bigger for me, and I could realy use some help.
I now installed from a CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1503-01.iso, selecting minimal
install in Anaconda.
After the install, the wireless interface shows up unmanaged by
NetworkManager.

Before, I thought this could be due to using the minimal install media.

 [root@localhost ~]# nmcli d
 DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
 p4p1 ethernet connected p4p1
 lo loopback unmanaged --
 wlp1s0 wifi unmanaged --

After installing the same way in Centos7, the wireless card is
automaticaly managed by NetworkManager as far as I
 can tell.

lspci shows the right kernel module so this is not a driver issue. I use
the same wifi cards in all the machines.

I'm sure there are ways to make this work without NetworkManager, but I
would like to have my users
just click on the nm icon and select a wireless network.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

 Many thanks.

Hello Mark Fred,

thanks for the reply's.

See the last part of the my mail:

The only difference I can think of, is that I now installed from Centos7.1
minimal install media, and before from Centos7 DVD.
But there I also select minimal install.

And then I sent another mail saying:

and that is indeed the case.

When installing from Centos7 DVD, I end up with wireless managed by
NetworkManager
When I install form the more recent 7.1 minimal install media ( not sure of the
exact name ) I end up with wireless not managed
by NetworkManager.

Further, for as long as I can remember, I always try to get rid of gnome
keyring by renaming:

mv /usr/bin/gnome-keyring /usr/bin/gnome-keyring.bak
mv /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-3 /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-3.bak
mv /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon.bak

but now this is preventing me from connecting to wireless networks.

Greetings, Johan

Hello All,

this problem got bigger for me, and I could realy use some help.
I now installed from a CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1503-01.iso, selecting minimal
install in Anaconda.
After the install, the wireless interface shows up unmanaged by NetworkManager.

Before, I thought this could be due to using the minimal install media.

[root@localhost ~]# nmcli d
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
p4p1 ethernet connected p4p1
lo loopback unmanaged --
wlp1s0 wifi unmanaged --

After installing the same way in Centos7, the wireless card is automaticaly
managed by NetworkManager as far as I
can tell.

lspci shows the right kernel module so this is not a driver issue. I use the
same wifi cards in all the machines.

I'm sure there are ways to make this work without NetworkManager, but I would
like to have my users
just click on the nm icon and select a wireless network.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Many thanks.
Johan

[CentOS] Centos7 - Mate - Zombie printer icon remains after printing

2015-06-10 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I have the problem described in this bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1116756

It is also descibed in some detail here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1264811

After printing, the print icon stays in the system tray until I logout.
The bugzilla says there is a fix for Fedora21.

Does anybody know how to get this fixed for C7?

Thanks very much.

Ah, I've seen that too. Not only does it remain there, it no longer
works, i.e., you can't open it, you can't kill it, it just sits
  there, inert.

I'd like to see a fix for this also.

However, since Mate isn't an official Centos desktop, you'll
probably need to post a request with the EPEL maintainers.

When you have this issue do you check the cups log for the printer
in question to see if it indicates that the job has completed? It
might be that the cups doesn't think the job is done. Also, have you
tried checking the status of, and/or stopping/starting, the
cups.service to see if that clears it?

No, I haven't thought to check the log. but the job comes out of
the printer, as do subsequent ones even though the icon remains
stuck on the upper panele.

Hello All,

thanks for the answers.

In /var/log/cups/access.log all is ok:

localhost - - [10/Jun/2015:15:04:18 +0200] POST
/printers/Printer-2deverdieping HTTP/1.1 200 63251 Print-Job successful

var/log/cups/error.log shows an - I think - unrelated EM:

W [10/Jun/2015:13:35:19 +0200] CreateProfile failed:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager
was not provided by any .service files

I am unable to test if restarting cups clears the icon at the moment.

I am very happy with this update, but it breaks language settings.
My machines are installed in Dutch, so I had

After the update We have

[CentOS] Centos6 7 : unable to print from webmail

2015-05-11 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello All,

I have this problem in both Centos 6 and 7, with standard Firefox, version
31.6.
I've tested this with Zarafa and Zimbra webmail.

Certain mails cannot be printed. These are mails that have untrusted images
somewhere in the body of the mail.
As a workaround : If you forward the mail, and before you press send, you
delete these images, you can print them.
I hope I'm explaining this right.

Note : if you ever wonder what a bunch of people complain about the most when
you put them behind Linux machines, it's printing. Probably
they all of a sudden they cannot complain any more about annoying pop-ups or
viruses shutting them down completely.

I see this Em in /var/log/messages :

May 11 10:07:03 jvermeulen dbus[994]: [system] Rejected send message, 10
matched rules; type=method_return, sender=:1.1 (uid=70 pid=985
comm=avahi-daemon: starting up ) interface=(unset) member=(unset) error

comm=/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox )
May 11 10:07:03 jvermeulen dbus[994]: [system] Rejected send message, 10

name=(unset) requested_reply=0 destination=:1.92 (uid=15587 pid=4069
comm=/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox )

I tested this on Centos7 with Google Chrome, same issue. I have not tested this
with newer Firefox versions.

Some of my ( hopefully one day ex ) colleagues let me know this does work on
Ubuntu.

Thanks for any help on this.

Greetings, Johan

[CentOS] Vodafone K4203 Mobile Broadband on Centos7

2015-05-11 Thread johan . vermeulen7
Hello,

I hope someone can hlep me take this hurdle towards using Centos7
I'm trying to get a usb 3-g dongle to work on Centos7

On Centos6 I can follow the instructions that come with the device to get it to
work:

1. Insert stick
2. Dismiss all popups about running the auto install scripts
3. Open terminal
4. cd $HOME
5. mkdir vfinstall
6. cd vfinstall
7. (cd /media/Vodafone Mobile Broadband tar -cvf - .) | tar -xf 96
8. chmod +x autorun.sh install_linux
9. sudo ./autorun.sh
10. Type user password
11. Wait for last command to finish, then close terminal

or just
cd /media/Vodafone Mobile Broadband
./ install_linux

I also tested the stick on Fedora21, it connects without installing anything.

On Centos7 I see this:

they supply software for Linux on the Vodafone site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

one man coming from Ubuntu AND Star Trek is on tv here; there is still hope for
the world.

I visited that site, and they mention available since Fedora6. Now I like
French banks.
When I search in Centos6 I see this:

 Package Arch Version Repository Size

Installing:
 homebank x86_64 4.4-3.el6.nux nux-dextop 680 k
Installing for dependencies:
 libofx x86_64 0.9.4-1.el6 epel 139 k

Transaction Summary

Install 2 Package(s)

Total download size: 819 k
Installed size: 2.6 M

So apart from getting it from Frank, isn't this the packages you need?
I cannot check on Centos7 at the moment.

My apologies for the confusing title; that was the original EM.
At first the machine would not boot.
After searching, I got as far as not being able to log on.

Maybe. Centos-7 would probably do the job but this machine is 32-bit
 so it's a non-starter AFAIK.

There was some talk on this list of a 32-bit build of CentOS 7, but
nothing has come of it yet.

Hello

I spent considerable time getting Netflix to work on Centos6/Firefox, and I
couldn't get it to work.
Luckily along came Centos7, on which it is easy to install Chrome.
But I would still prefer to run it in Firefox.

Hi Johan,

Your system is assembling md127, but is apparently expecting md1.

I suspect that you examined the raid1 from a previously working EL5
system using a more-recent-than-EL5 LiveDVD, which assembled the raid1
as md127 and wrote super-minor 127 to the raid1 (assuming ver. 0.90
metadata). When started under EL5, it then assembled as md127, not md1,
hence the problem.

If that is what happened, then boot the system with the same LiveDVD,
stop the raid and then assemble it as md1 while updating the
super-minor. (You might want to mount the installation and look at fstab
and grub.conf while running the LiveDVD to verify that it is looking for
md1).

For example (assuming md1 contained partitions sda1 and sdb1):

- (Boot using the LiveDVD)

- (Unmount anything from md127 # df -h)

- (Inactivate any VGs/LVs # vgchange -an VG or lvchange -an LV)

# mdadm -S /dev/md127

# mdadm -A /dev/md1 -U super-minor /dev/sd[ab]1

Then shut down the LiveDVD and attempt to boot the system under EL5.

Steve

PS I don't watch EL5 boot very often/recently, so I might have misses
something relevant in your post.

Steve,

thanks for the replies.
I do use a centos6 livecd, and that might very well cause the confusion.

In the end, I was able to pull the data off the machine using Parted Magic,
after spending a lot of
time trying to chroot into the machine.

It was the only Centos5 I had and I'l replace it with Centos7, if I can get
that to work.

greetings, Johan

[CentOS] unable to recover software raid1 install

2015-03-17 Thread johan . vermeulen7

Hello All,

on a Centos5 system installed with software raid I'm getting:

md: Autodetecting RAID arrays

md: autorun.

md : autorun DONE

trying to resume form /dev/md1

Now I'm trying to boot into rescue mode from a Centos dvd, at the end of the
Anaconda sequence I get:

no linux partitions found.

at the command prompt, fdisk -l gives me:

/dev/sdb1*

/dev/sda3

I'm not sure where to go from here.

I try chrooting as described here
:http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Install_On_Partitionable_RAID1

but chrooting always fails with:

chroot : failed to run command ' /usr/bin/bash : no such file or directory.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Hello All,

isn't there the option in Centos7 to create user without password?
Is this also for reasons of kickstart or such as well?

I had an unpleasant conversation with my brother-in-law at Christmas dinner
last year.
I am a sysadmin who encourages his users to have good password behavior.
He is a Java developer who is encouraged by his sysadmin, and he doesn't like
it.

His point in short: passwords are not all that important any more.
All virus spreading and hacking these days is done by sending malicous mails
and by visiting malicious sites.
