[Chat] AIA Open Space visioning at Sunday's Street Fair

2017-09-15 Thread Linda Forlifer
The Abell Improvement Association (AIA) was awarded a Spruce-Up Grant from
Central Baltimore Partnership to make improvements to the AIA Open Space on
32nd Street. We are looking for input from the community of users: what
would you like to see in our pocket park: a mural? new seating? more trees?
portable lawn games like croquet? Please stop by the AIA booth at this
Sunday's Street Fair (noon to five) and tell us what appeals to you. At the
table we'll have drawings of our current Open Space and suggestions for a
range of possible improvements. You'll be able to note your preferences and
give new, creative suggestions in writing; this feedback will guide our
volunteer landscape designers P.E.L.A., who are working with
representatives of Rec and Parks, Neighborhood Design Center, and AIA.
Later this fall we will announce a public meeting to consider specific
plans for the Open Space.

At the fair you may also enjoy a crab feast, live music all day, children's
activities, food & drink, vendors & non-profits, stoop sales, and more!

Re: [Chat] Trees and tree pits

2015-07-30 Thread Linda Forlifer
It's definitely the property owner/resident adjacent who is responsible for
maintenance of sidewalk, tree lawn, gutter cleaning, and alley. That
responsibility includes paying for new concrete when the city deems it
necessary, mowing grass, weeding, picking up trash, clearing snow and ice
from public sidewalk, etc.

We have two bald cypresses newly installed. We can water pretty easily

bigger problem is weeds. They attract rats and trash.

Are homeowners supposed to weed or with the city do it? Or is it covered
 by the CVCBD surtax?

[Chat] Peabody Heights Brewery

2013-10-14 Thread Linda Forlifer
Message from Jo Ann Robinson ( jooi...@msn.commailto:jooi...@msn.com ):

Dear Neighbors,

RESIST THE BEGINNINGS is a rule that has served me well from when it was
impressed on me as a teenager to this present day. I believe that it is time
to apply it to the issue of whether or not our community supports a liquor
license and zoning change for Peabody Heights Brewery, which would permit
retail sales of beer, numerous events and live entertainment at Barclay and
30th Streets.

At the beginning of our relationship with the brewery, the owners and AIA
entered into a Memorandum of Understanding which included a provision that
there would be no retail sales on the premises (signed by brewery owner Hollis
Albert on 12/2/2011).A brief couple of years later we face a new law
permitting breweries to sell their wares on the premises, and our Peabody
Heights neighbors are asking us to support their application for a license
under the new law, rendering the first MOU irrelevant.

At the beginning of the owners' discussions with community residents (at a
meeting in late August) about this new license application the owners proposed
certain hours of operation and a certain number of special events. Already,
they have amended the proposal presented in August to include longer hours of
operation and more special events - totaling, now some 50+ events yearly, in
addition to those during regular retail hours (5-9 Mon - Fri, 11-9 Sat).
Their proposal Includes live entertainment for such events.

In the beginning I welcomed the brewery's taking up residence in a vacant
building.I saw no problem with the occasional weekend events held there; I
attended and enjoyed two of them. I made a point of buying Raven and Poe
beers at regular liquor stores. I assumed our tolerant and quirky
neighborhood could accommodate a brewery.

I do not believe we should accommodate a bar, for the following reasons:

*Beer being drunk on the premises, drinkers coming and going, and
growlers being carried onto the streets are activities that do not mix well
with the coming and going of children and youth.

Barclay School is right across the street. The latest proposed hours for
liquor sales overlap with the school's after- care program and evening
programs scheduled during the school year.

When the former Barclay School principal, Gertrude
Williams, learned of the
proposed bar she declared, they would never think
of trying to sell liquor
across the street from Roland Park public school
or Mt. Washington.To the
best of my knowledge, no one in AIA has a child at
Barclay and, until the meeting
for Oct. 15 was set (rather late in the process), no one has made a point of
informing parents of Barclay students.

The 29th Street Community Center is right around the corner. Its program
hours will overlap even more than the school's with the liquor sales.

*The residential streets in the vicinity of the brewery are not
constructed to absorb the foot traffic, car traffic, parking and noise of 50+
events a year with live entertainment, drawing crowds of up to 300+ people.

Brewery owners have proposed valet parking in lots several blocks from
the site. This will not prevent patrons from taking all available street
parking,
leaving the valet system as a last resort.

As our weekly crime tally indicates, muggings and
car vandalism and larceny are more
frequent in this area than we wish. Those who
park any distance from the
brewery, whether valets or customers, will be
possible targets of these too-common
  crimes.

*Once word gets out that the brewery has a bar and growlers , Peabody
Heights will become a magnet for our college student neighbors, a development
that will enhance neither the peace of the neighborhood nor the safety of the
students.

*We may hope that a new MOU can be crafted that will somehow address
the above concerns

and issues that others may raise, but our experience with the brewery to date
shows that such

agreements have no real force. It is likely that the current owners will
develop

new imperatives for their enterprise that go beyond the latest MOU, and we
also need to

consider the possibility of the business changing hands. In that case, we
cannot expect that that new owners will adopt whatever limits on beer- sale
hours, events and entertainment we thought we had secured.

I hope that these and other concerns will be examined fully at the meeting at
5:30 p.m. at the 29th Street Community Center on October 15th. And I urge us
to think carefully before entering into this newest beginning requested by
Peabody Heights Brewery.

Re: [Chat] Water is off

Water started coming out of a crack in the road in front of 3046 Guilford a
month ago. I reported it to 311 (#13-00637664). It continued to leak and
nothing was done; a couple weeks ago it had created a foot-diameter hole in the
asphalt; by this week the hole was probably ~2 ft round and the road around it
was sinking. I don't know why the city let it leak for so long and undermine
the pavement. Did anyone else report the leak?

I went outside, and a city crew is working at the other end of the block (near
the southwest corner of 31st and Guilford). They are digging up part of
Guilford Ave. I was told we should have our water back in a couple of hours.

I just saw Emil's post on the chat list. He lives right near where the crew is
working, and they clearly are working hard. It takes a lot of work and money
to maintain ancient water mains.

And thanks Emil to for encouraging the fixing of the problem.

Fortunately, we have some bottled water in the basement for
emergencies. Also, earlier this evening, we saw a yellow flashing
light outside on what may have been a city water repair truck.

I did call 311. If you press 3 after a recording tells you that it is
after hours, you get someone who is supposed to handle public works
emergencies, but she said it could be 24 hours before the water is
back on. I was given a service request number. She also said it was
shift change time, so information may not have been available to her.

I am on the 3000 block of Guilford. It is too late to see whether
others on the block also have no water, so I will ask on these list
serves whether anyone else is having the same problem.

One thing I guess we all are aware of is that the water distribution
system in Baltimore is ancient, and most of it should be replaced but
will not be because of the expense. At least I am not seeing any
flooding outside, but I may go out and take a look.

Re: [Chat] water troubles

2012-07-17 Thread Linda Forlifer
There was a lot of water coming out of the water meter cover in front of 323 E
33rd for maybe a week. It was reported to the city the day it began, but the
water kept running. Until it's repaired, the people living there need their
water service. For that block quad there is only one storm drain, at the NE
corner of 32nd Guilford. So the gutter had a stream of water from 33rd, all
down the 3200 block of Abell (west side), and along 32nd St (north side) till
it ran in the storm drain.

Yesterday, Roberts Plumbing was there in the morning and turned off the water.
This morning I see that the front is all dug up, around the meter in the tree
lawn and the front garden between the sidewalk and the house front. Most
likely the dirt in the water is from this repair.

Whenever this happens, you just want to run the water till it is again clear,
to clean out the rust/dirt that got in the pipe.

Re: [Chat] schnapp

2012-06-25 Thread Linda Forlifer
I was afraid that the Schnapp Shoppe might be one of the group. It's much more
than a liquor store, very convenient, and quite well run. I would advocate for
keeping it as a long-standing asset to Charles Village. The owners are
responsive to their customers (more so than the liquor store on St. Paul).
When I've requested a particular item, the Schnapp Shoppe has gotten it in.

On my way walking home from work, I can stop there for milk, a can of beans, or
other necessities. Yes, they sell liquor, but I consider them a convenience
store.

When I attended a meeting about the new zoning plan, they emphasized that a
goal was mixed use, so 1st-floor stores and apartments above would be
encouraged. The idea supposedly is to create a good environment for urban
living (for people without cars), with a dynamic streetscape that does not
separate residences and businesses serving residents. To my mind, the Schnapp
Shoppe answers that goal and should remain as it is.

Linda

 Joshua Fruhlinger jf...@jfruh.com 6/23/2012 12:13 PM
It means that, if the Schnapp Shop didn't exist and a new store at that
location tried to get a liquor license, it wouldn't be granted. But the
existing store was grandfathered in because it acquired a liquor license before
the current laws went into effect (in the '70s, I believe. The law probably
doesn't allow liquor stores in completely residential areas like the Schnapp
Shop anymore.

I don't think the closures are a done deal -- there will probably be public
hearings about it, if you're interested.

Hi Kathleen,

The Baltimore City forester is Erik Dihle. I don't know his contact
info.

You might get a response from our longtime neighbor on Abell Ave, Beth
Strommen--she's director of the Baltimore Office of Sustainability:
Phone: 410-396-8360

Similarly, does anyone know who to contact at the city about
removing/replacing a tree from a public sidewalk tree well? My neighbor
and I have called 311 repeatedly about a tree doing poorly in front of
our houses and have gotten no action.

Thanks!
Kathleen

Christine et al - This is my perhaps inaccurate language to describe the old
small closet-like boxes that stick out of the house in the back rooms of some
of these Charles Village homes. The first CV house I lived in the closets had
rusted out and that space had been cinderblocked over, but now we have some
that are still (mostly) intact. Is this more clear?? I guess it's hard to
describe. They are about 5' tall by 3' wide by 1' wide (roughly) and stick out
from the house. Ours are metal...

Anyway, looking for ideas on how to insulate them.

Thanks, -Maya

Re: [Chat] Suspicious activity

2011-04-20 Thread Linda Forlifer
From the BGE website:

BGE cautions customers to be mindful of individuals who try to gain
access to their homes by posing as utility workers. Utility imposters
may carry official looking credentials and often work in pairs.

BGE recommends customers take the following steps to ensure their
safety against imposters:

Do not open your door to someone you don't recognize – ask for a
photo ID through the door / window. All BGE employees and contractors
carry company ID badges displaying their name, photograph and
identification number. To verify a BGE employee's identity or work being
done at your home, call us at 410-685-0123 or 1-800-685-0123. Operators
are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Report suspicious activity to the police. Customers who encounter
suspected utility imposters are urged to immediately notify the police.

 Stephen J Gewirtz gewi...@bellatlantic.net 4/20/2011 12:01 PM

Judy,

These folk did ask to see my BGE bill. I remember the situation about
a
year ago, and someone came to my door then. What made me really
suspicious this time was the accompanying behavior (ringing my bell,
saying they had the wrong person, then still being there a few minutes

later when I decided to take another look, and only then trying to sell

me on changing electric companies). This made me suspect that they
were
mimicking the earlier door to door solicitations as a way to try to get

me to open my security door.

By the way, this incident made me extremely glad to have a security
door. It functions as a storm / screen door, but it provides a barrier

when I want to answer the door without being vulnerable to an intended

home invasion. Such doors are not cheap, but they are well worth the
money.

been butchered every time we had gone there, and we don't require anything

I saw nothing notifying us of the footrace on Saturday, which certainly
inconvenienced a lot of city dwellers. I was awakened by the sounds of police
blocking off lanes of 33rd Street. I was at Van Dyke and Bacon on York Rd
later in the morning. The shoe salesman mentioned that he had had difficulty
getting to work: the #8 bus had been stopped on Greenmount at 28th, and
passengers were told they had to walk up to 36th to get a continuing bus! The
bus riders had no warning, either, and he could have taken a different bus
route.

Somebody in the racing community and/or city govt certainly dropped the ball
when they did not let people know to plan ahead for disruption. We can do
that, but we need to know ahead of time about the events and how they will
affect us.

[Chat] CV volunteers for permit pickup

2008-10-14 Thread Linda Forlifer
Reminder, you must order and pay for your parking permit ONLINE by Thursday
October 16th to be able to pick up your permit on Saturday October 18th. All
who order and pay AFTER October 16th will have to go downtown to pick up
their permits.

Bonnie Bessor still needs volunteers to help at the distribution table in the
afternoon
of October 18th between 1pm and 4pm in front of Eddie's market on St. Paul
Street. Please call her at 410-467-5170 or email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
sign up to volunteer.

With such a large number of households in greater Charles Village, there
should be some residents who appreciate the service of neighborhood pickup and
would be willing to help distribute on Saturday afternoon. Please contact

Re: [Chat] Recycling Problems

2008-05-28 Thread Linda Forlifer
The alleys east of Guilford and north of 30th are narrow, not like the named
alleys west of Guilford Avenue. The residents were asked to put their
recycling in front of their homes because the trucks cannot negotiate the
smaller alleys. The workers now spend extra time collecting from both the
front and rear. There would be less spillage if they were able to collect from
the front only on blocks where the alleys are too narrow for the truck.

Linda

Katie [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/28/2008 1:36 PM
You may want to ask the recycling office if they can change the route to
pick up in front of your houses on that block instead of behind. I know
they mentioned that the trucks they use for recycling are too big to fit
down some of the alley streets, which is why they carry the bins down to the
end of the block.

Hi Neighbors,
The recycle truck just came by in the alley on the East side of the 3000
block of Guilford and the guys created much more mess in the alley than they
cleaned up. Apparently they are not bringing the truck down the alley and so
they clumsily carry the bags and bins down some way with trash spilling out
all along the way, which they do not clean up. They also do not return the
bins to their proper place. I called and complained. Be aware of this and
please complain if there is a mess in the alley and your bin is not where it
should be. Thanks, David O'Donaghue

Re: [Chat] Fwd: More details on the assault at 33rd and Greenmount

2008-02-06 Thread Linda Forlifer
It is hard to understand how someone could be taken three blocks (past
the gas stations, Old York Rd, the Giant, and the 700 block of houses)
from 33rd Greenmount to a house in the 800 block of 33rd (almost to
the Stadium YMCA and Eastern). Forced into a car? That stretch of 33rd
is full of pedestrian and vehicular traffic at 7:30 in the morning, with
all the people going to work (on bus stops and in cars) and busy about
their business.

Linda

Sharon,

I think it was 7:30 a.m. Katie Beltz sent out a bulletin considerably

after I did, and she gave the time as a.m.

At the same time, the urging that parents tell their kids to go
straight
home after school may reflect the view that it could just as easily
have
happened in the p.m. But a student at City would be likely to be
waiting for a bus to go to school in the morning from 33rd and
Greenmount, and would take a bus from 33rd and Loch Raven in the
afternoon.

In any case, let us hope that the perp is caught soon before there are

any more victims.

We have been in Charles Village for 9 years now and have enjoyed being part of
the community. Lately over the past 4 or so years our sales at Rocky Run have
slipped though and faced with continuous rising operating costs on our end, it
has been a difficult time for us.

After a lot of research, we have decided to try and do something with a
fresh, clean new look and that was perhaps a better fit in the neighborhood in
terms of a menu and price point. We are still a family friendly restaurant and
will continue to pride ourselves on that. We have kept all of the foods on
our menu that have done well for us over the years in terms of sales and guest
satisfaction (ie. burgers, nachos, cheesesteaks, wings, salads, crab dip
crab pretzel, etc. etc.. Some of the other items that were dropped were done
so because either they had become cost prohibitive (ie. steak, ribs) or they
just did not sell enough (ie. pasta, seafood) to warrant being on the menu.

We have also dropped our prices on both food and beverages with the hope of
being more attractive from that point of view.

I hope that you will give the new concept a try and am confident that you will
enjoy it.

Thank you,

Re: [Chat] Fwd: Would-be rescuer stabbed 3 times

2007-08-02 Thread Linda Forlifer
It's distressing that the police do not believe such an incident to be
high in their priority list. When someone is stabbed and their
intestine is punctured, that is a life-threatening assault. Our police
should be trying to identify the criminals who are preying on our
neighborhood, and the detectives' reluctance to interview the people
involved seems to show that they are not giving us needed attention.

Recent CV robberies have been at gunpoint and knifepoint. According to
the police spokesman, Sterling Clifford, In the case of the
nonlife-threatening injury, it is not unusual for the detective not to
respond to the scene. Detectives did not interview Benjamin Treat
until 35 hours after the stabbing, and then only after he and his mother
called several times. I guess the police are telling us they will wait
til someone is killed before making extra efforts to apprehend the CV
criminals. That will be too late.

I'm sorry to hear about the recent assaults but also quite sorry that
the police are giving people such advice as not to walk alone! Are
citizens all supposed to stay cowering inside their homes or offices and
to desert our sidewalks and yards, leaving them only to thugs? How does

Better advice would be for all of us to come outside our houses, sit on

Its just so out of place, looking like it should be situated in a tree

I suspect it might have been a model home of some sort, moved into

2006-10-17 Thread Linda Forlifer
Our neighborhood is clearly having a crime wave of second-story
burglaries. And people are telling us that the police who respond do
not want to write reports, for various reasons. Perhaps we should ask
Mary Pat to help us with the police, getting reports filed. We know
that without police reports there is no reliable tracking of crime.
This sounds like avoidance of work and avoidance of crime statistics on
the part of the police, to me. I'm copying Mary Pat's office on this

Re: [Chat] Attempted break in

2006-10-13 Thread Linda Forlifer
Hi Kathleen,

I noted (on JHU reports and from neighbors) recent incidents of thieves
(or the same thief) climbing up to people's back 2nd-floor porches to
get in windows and doors. It's not that hard for a strong young man to
do.

One of my close neighbors heard someone in her roommate's bedroom about
10:00 p.m. (when she knew no one else was home) and then saw him escape
from their 2nd floor apartment.

Always insist on a police report; otherwise the incident/crime did not
happen, is not officially counted or noted. I've been told to do so and
that it is a citizen's right. The police, of course, would rather not,
because it's more work for them. But when resources are allocated,
incidents without a written report (and number) are invisible.

I depend on my dog to scare off bad guys, but I really should do more
to secure the second floor (deadbolt locks, window locks).

Glad you're both okay!

Linda

Sunday night someone attempted to break into our back second floor
bedroom. Emil was already in bed (about 2:30 AM) but I had gotten
up to check a scheduling problem I thought I might have Monday and
was on the computer in the front second floor room. Emil called to
me asking if I had heard something. I called back that I hadn't.
We chalked it up to noise from next door or out in the alley.

The next day when I pulled up the blinds in the bedroom, a small
flower pot on our outside bedroom windowsill had been moved.
Then I noticed that the screen was pushed up and a plastic
chair on the balcony was moved to be in front of the window
(so someone could stand on it presumably). We did call 311
and they send a couple of officers to come and look. They
were very nice but didn't take a report. They said they'd
make a note to put our house on some sort of special watch
list for a couple of nights.

We don't have stairs from our back 1st floor deck to the second
floor one but the house next door is 3 apartment so they have
connecting steps (required by fire law to have a back exit from every
apartment). I assume the person came up there stairs and climbed
over the rail separating our two decks but was then scared
away when Emil called to me. Very scary. So, be aware and watchful.

Re: [Chat] [AIA Members] C V Saturated With We Buy Houses Signs

2006-03-27 Thread Linda Forlifer
I remember some instructions from CV list, I think, about reporting
illegal signs to the city before you take them down, so people can be
fined. Can anyone refresh our memories on this?

Abell Improvement Association Members - You have probably noticed the
We
Buy Houses signs around here and around town. It is a scam and do not
call
them. There is documented evidence from others who have been scammed
around
town. So please, ignore them, take them down, it's a scam.

below is a note from our resident realtor regarding this. His note
reminded
me that I wanted to let you know about these.

Thanks

You've probably seen those infomercials on cable television telling
people
how they can get rich in real estate. One of the techniques is to
identify
homeowners facing financialproblems who risk losing their homes to
foreclosure. Novices believe that posting We
Buy Houses signs yields results and that the more signs you post, the
more
propertiesyou will acquire. I've spoken with Arjay who has a tree
pruning
tool that is perfect for removing the signs.
In other neighborhoods residents jam the voice mailbox on the phone
number
advertisedon the signs. I even know of one 'homeowner' who called the

number telling the person
to come by to look at the house. When the investor arrived she was
handed 2
dozen We
Buy Houses signs and told not to come back to Belair Edison.

Have any of you noticed the bright yellow We Buy Houses signs that
are
saturating the C V commercial areas (33rd Street, Greenmount Avenue,
St.
Paul Street, etc.)???

Have any of you noticed the signs in residential areas??

Does anyone know who might be installing the signs??

[Chat] Case dismissed, was Re: Ticketed for talking

2006-01-26 Thread Linda Forlifer
Absolutely, write to the Northern District commander and community
relations officer. It would be good to know what their response to the
situation would be. Do they support aggressive demeanor to good
citizens questioning an officer? Do they suggest that you and Steve
were appropriately viewed as threatening? I'd like to know how the
police are trained to deal with residents.

Hello, folks,

Yesterday Steve accompanied me to the District Court on
Wabash Ave. to help me contest the ticket I got for
allegedly obstructing traffic on Guilford Ave. at about
10 PM on a Tuesday night.

The officer didn't appear, and the case was dismissed!

I was ready to argue that I didn't deserve the ticket.
I had a letter signed by Dave Barnett, and Steve was
there ready to testify as a witness. But it wasn't
necessary. I do want to offer thanks to Steve and
Dave for their help. I also want to thank Dana Moore
for offering me advice about how to present the case
and suggesting some Do's and Don'ts.

This all was such a waste of energy brought on by probably
nothing more than a police officer in a bad mood.

While I may have technically violated the law, I think
it was inappropriate for the police officer to give me
a ticket for causing a very minor inconvenience.

The demeanor of the officers was inappropriate.
The officer who issued the ticket spoke to Steve
in a very aggressive tone, ordering him to move back
and threatening him with arrest when he did nothing
threatening. I had to ask four times if
I was free to go after they gave me the ticket.

Should I write a letter to somebody to complain about
the treatment? What do Chat List subscribers think?

Hello, neighbors,

After the CVCBDMA Board meeting, I drove back and gave Steve Gewirtz a
lift. Steve and I both live on the 3000 block of Guilford, and I
stopped across from his house, right before the intersection of
Guilford and 30th. We chatted for a little while about politics, then
Dave Barnett drove by in the opposite direction, on his way home I
assume. I hadn't seen him for a while, so we both rolled down our
windows to talk. Then I saw a police car pull up behind me, with
bubble lights. Dave moved on, and I pulled my car closer to the side
to get out of the way. The police gave me a $50 ticket for impeding
the flow of traffic. I was really surprised because I was in the car
the whole time, with the hazard lights on, and I moved almost as soon
as I saw someone behind me was trying to get by. Certainly when Dave
moved, I believe the police could have gotten past me.

The police starting ticketing me right after I turned the corner and I
let Steve off. Steve asked the officer what the problem was, and they
told him to back off, gave him a 5-second warning. That seemed a
little harsh.

I think I remember hearing recently that Dana Moore was given a ticket
when she was stopped out in front of her house loading or unloading
from her car, and that the judge threw it out.

I'm planning to tell the judge I'm innocent, and Steve says he'll come
with me.

Does anybody have any thoughts about this situation? It seems kind
of extreme. I feel like I should have been entitled to some signal
like a honk or yelling move along before they decided I was
blocking traffic.

Re: [Chat] They stole our wreath!

2005-12-08 Thread Linda Forlifer
Kathleen,

Don't let the police stop you from getting the report documented.
That's to their benefit (saves them time and paperwork, they can report
a drop in crime) but not to the benefit of the community. Last time I
was able to make a report over the phone through the 311 system; I don't
know if they still do that.

I am very skeptical of statistics from the police because I've
experienced their stonewalling when residents want to report crimes (in
my case, they've said a report wasn't necessary for theft and for a man
exposing himself).

When I hang my wreath, I use multiple pieces of wire to attach it to
the iron grill on my front door. Takes me lots more time, but I haven't
lost a wreath since I began to do that.

Good luck,

Linda

Yes, my wreath was also stolen during the day but I was at work.
My first reaction was to call the police and report it for the
reason that Linda mentions, but the police
gave me such a hassle and attitude back in May when I reported
the theft of my hose reel out of my backyard that I am hesitating.

Please encourage everyone who experiences a theft to make a report to
the police and, if it's of mail (a federal crime), to the post office.
We receive services only if these are documented.

Re: [Chat] missing pets

2005-07-18 Thread Linda Forlifer
One unfortunate possibility is that they are stolen to be used in
training dogs to fight. I've been told of (and read about) this
happening near our neighborhood (Harwood). You could talk to Vonnie
Gowe or Emily Chalmers about this.

It's safest to keep cats as indoor pets and dogs in your home when
they're not on leash walking with you.

Linda

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 7/18/2005 10:11:07 AM
I'm dismayed at the amount of missing pet posters I see posted every
week in CV, at least in the 2900-3100 blocks of Guilford, Calvert, and
St. Paul. I've lived in 5 different cities across the country and have
never encountered this in other neighborhoods. My youngest cat went
missing last November. He vanished seemingly without a trace. I walked
door to door for a week, talking to neighbors, passing out flyers,
searching alleys and trash cans, to no avail.

I'm normally not a conspiracy theorist (a popular occupation in CV, it
appears!), but I'm starting to wonder now. Where do these pets go?
I've never seen an animal control van in our area, so I don't think we
have an overactive animal control department picking up random animals.
I don't see very many run-over animals on the street, so that doesn't
seem to be a problem. And I have never found a carcass of a pet in an
alley.

Are the animals being stolen? Taken to another neighborhood? Hoarded
in basements? Are the gutters/sewers notorious for trapping
unsuspecting animals? Can I blame the CVCBD for this? (just joking)

Curious and a little saddened,
Sarah

Re: [Chat] Light up the Night Program

2005-04-06 Thread Linda Forlifer
You seem to have forgotten the Abell Improvement Association and Mike
Treadway, who began this initiative.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 4/5/2005 9:13:02 PM
Dear Charles Villager,

The CV Light Up The Night program would be DE-LIGHTED to provide
you with
two FREE CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) BULBS to use on your front and
rear
porch. The BULBS are being offered WITHOUT CHARGE to all homes in the
Charles
Village Community. We will even install the BULBS for you! This is a
great way
to keep our neighborhood safer and friendlier and the price is right!
The only
way it could be better is if you also got cash to take them! Forget
that!

The CFL Bulbs use one-fourth of the energy of a standard incandescent
BULB of
the same wattage. That means you can light it twice as long and still
use only
half as much electricity as a regular incandescent light BULB. You will
also
find yourself climbing the ladder much less often to replace your porch
BULB.
These BULBS generally last up to thirteen time longer than an
equivalent
incandescent light BULBS!

By saving you both money and ladder time, we hope this BULB will
encourage you
to KEEP YOUR PORCH LIGHTS ON AT NIGHT! By just flicking on your light
switch
at night, you can help keep Charles Village safer. The better lighted
our
neighborhood streets are the fewer shadowy places for the forces of
darkness
to hide.

We do it all! The only thing we can't do is come over every night and
turn
them on for you! The only things you have to do are sign up for your
BULBS,
and then TURN THEM ON AFTER DARK.

It's that simple!

If you'd like to be more involved in this project, we could sure use
you as a
volunteer to distribute BULBS. We would appreciate it very, very much
if you
would spread the world to neighbors on your block who haven't gotten
the word
about this program yet. Perhaps you could organize your entire block,
or part
of your block, or perhaps a group of your immediate neighbors.

Then call us with your list of those who would like the FREE BULBS.

Contact us to sign up for your FREE BULBS or with any questions about
this
program.

Either reply directly to this email notice or call:

410-662-0446 (Richard Johnson)(Arjay)
If necessary leave a phone message.

Let us know the:

Name(s), Address(es), Phone Number(s), One or two BULBS desired?
