AFAIK changing screen size means :
- changing video chip (or not, you can be software-accelerated only)
- finding a new screen
- changing case

And surprisingly the last one is difficult : you need to design one (CAD
?) and then either you have a 3D printer to make your own case or you
pay to produce a series of 1000 or more.

change in converter, but more functionality was added. For example there is
possibility to save bookmarks, save and load route (can be opened as
standard GPX), save and load track logs, has faster routing, can show simple
itinerary etc. For more information go to [1].

This is still beta, not all is done and some functionality may not work as
expected. Currently I'm using it actively in car and on bike and it works
quite good fro me. Currently only map of Czech republic can be downloaded,
next version will add turn restrictions and (hope) stabilize map format for
all 0.3.x versions. After that, more countries will be available for
 download (or on demand).

I have released previous public version more than one year ago, but I wanted
to release something usable, therefore the huge delay.

Currently only Debian version can be installed out of the box, needs fso-gps
and edje, but works with new libgps also. But you have to compile it
 yourself.

you can just install esd (esound) on FR (last time i tried it, it was

to the laptop and run mplayer -ao esd:192.168.1.202 file.mp3

pulseaudio could be a bit more user friendly if can get it running, ie
automatic discovery etc.. so that if you run it on FR and connect it to
your laptop, it would just pop a message that a new remote soundcard is
available... and you can move audiostreams from any application to that
remote soundcard... I have that running between desktop and laptop...
but it is still a bit unstable ;) and i don't think getting running it
 on FR would be easy...

You can easily listen a mp3 file using some pipes and ssh.

You can do (from your computer) :
ssh you@freerunner cat file.mp3 | mpg123 -

It will be parsed like this :
- ssh you@freerunner cat file.mp3 : ssh runs on your computer, and try
to execute cat file.mp3 on remote machine
- then | mpg123 - : the output is redirected to your local mp3 player
(mpg123 here)

The same mechanism is often used by admins to transfer tar files over
network (ssh distantPC tar something | untar locally)

To play a collection you can use something like that :
ssh you@freerunner find mp3folder -wholename \*Metallica\*.mp3
-print0 | xargs -p0 cat | mpg123 -

It is a bit ugly but it should work if you just want to listen your music.

For Fong Yuenshu's problem it is a bit more difficult, as he wants to
redirect the whole soundsystem from the freerunner to a computer.
It may be possible with some advanced sound daemon like esd or else...
if you find a solution do not hesitate to share with us :)

I know it was possible with SHR (not with recent kernels) and Windows 7

It's one of the original scripts from Qt Extended/Qtopia. I think the sysfs

If you try om utility (from omhacks package) it could have parameter for
enabling fast charge. Then you can edit the Fast charge mode script so that
it uses om command (and send the result to me so that i can commit it as

Thanks for the hint. As soon as I will be able to log through ssh I will

Re: [qtmoko] Contacts and SMS, how do they work ?

2011-05-21 Thread Xavier Cremaschi

After several tests, some results :

- How can I import contacts from .vcf file with long names + utf-8
encoding ?

You cannot.
There are some bugs in Qtopia addressbook :
- you cannot use vCard 3.0 files encoded in utf-8, multibyte UTF-8
characters will be mangled in Qtopia addressbook
- you cannot use vCard 2.1 files, utf-8 may be ok but import process
crashes for other reasons unknown to me.

The solution for me was to use a vCard 3.0 file re-encoded in iso8859-1
(:set fileencoding=iso8859-1 in vim), because everything I needed could
be covered by iso8859-1. I can't see a solution if you really need
utf-8, sorry.

- If I do a bad manipulation, how can I do a rollback ? (restore an
empty db, remove all junk entries without doing it one by one) ?
Close Qtopia, and use sqlite client to clean database yourself (a backup
before is always good):

sqlite3 /home/root/Applications/Qtopia/qtopia_db.sqlite

delete from contactcategories;
delete from contactaddresses;
delete from contactcustom;
delete from contactphonenumbers;
delete from contacts;
.quit

- How can I hide or disable contacts from sim card ? I only want to use
the one from my .vcf file (I manage them on my computer with kontact)
It seems that the first time you install Qtopia your SIM contacts are
loaded into Qtopia database (cf. upper). You can remove them
definitively from Qtopia database using sqlite client.

I tried to import a vcf file with something like :
DISPLAY=:0 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/qtmoko/lib /opt/qtmoko/bin/addressbook
/tmp/addressbook.vcf
Additional note : you need to do source /opt/qtmoko/qpe.env before, in
order to load good environment variables

I am currently testing v35 from sdcard, and I've got 2 problems with the
email client.

I cannot get all my emails from gmail through IMAP. I have to select a
specific IMAP folder with few emails (100) in order to see the client
doing something. If I try to get all my emails, or if I specify a bigger
folder (1000) nothing happens. Too big ?
Btw netstat tells me there is an established connection between my FR

And then when I read my french emails there are some encoding problems.
Does anyone know which package should be installed to manage ISO-8859-15

Thanks in advance for any help,

Babiloo and Swedish dictionary

I installed babiloo (on shr unstable) and following dicts :

to translate from and to English.

But if I write här, babiloo can't find here as a valid translation.
If I put here in the reverse dict, babiloo finds hit, här.

It seems I am unable to input words with diacritics (I can write them,
using the right keyboard layout).

Re: [SHR] X forwarding: export DISPLAY?

2010-08-18 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Le 18/08/2010 13:08, Sebastian Krzyszkowiak a écrit :

Maybe we should enable it by default? Are there any disadventages?

Some security issues (some side effects) but I don't think it's relevant
for us.

Basically on your computer when $DISPLAY is :0.0 your X server is
listening to a UNIX socket (/tmp/.X11-unix/X0 indeed, you can check your
/tmp)

When you do some X11 forwarding there are 2 things :
- a network connection between X client (on faraway machine) and X
server (on here machine)
- an authentication

With the 'old school' system (cf. my previous message) you do :
faraway$ DISPLAY=here:0 my_application
to establish the (non-encrypted) connection between faraway and here

For the authentication, your X server usually accepts the X client from
faraway because you did a :
here$ xhost +faraway

But that's for the 'old school' system. Now what about ssh -X ?
While doing ssh -X to go on your Freerunner, you can see your
Freerunner's $DISPLAY is :10.0, which corresponds to a local TCP socket
(local on Freerunner) opened by the ssh server.

faraway$ lsof -ni TCP:6010
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
  sshd15663 root9u IPv4 437835 TCP 127.0.0.1:6010(LISTEN)

Any connection to 127.0.0.1:6010/TCP will be redirected through ssh from
your freerunner to your computer's /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 socket.

That's for the (encrypted) connection.

For authentication, there is a secret shared between X server and X
clients called magic-cookie and managed by the xauth application.

You can do xauth list $DISPLAY on your computer to see it. This secret
is stored in ~/.Xauthority (be careful with permission on this file)
If you do a ssh -X -vv (verbose) you will see your ssh client calling
xauth to get this magic-cookie (something like debug2: x11_get_proto:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth list :0.0 . 2/dev/null)

So why some distributions set X11Forwarding to 'no' ?

Because if your Freerunner is *compromised*, someone can control the
Xauthority file and therefore he can connect to the 6010/TCP socket.
Which is linked to your computer's UNIX socket.
== he has a kind a back channel to access to your computer's X server.

Re: [SHR] X forwarding: export DISPLAY?

2010-08-17 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Basically, you need

a computer with :
- a working X server (mainly Xorg)
- a working ssh client with -X option (mainly openssh-client)
(Note for working X server on cygwin : be sure to launch xterm, not the
basic tty)

a Freerunner with :
- a working X client (the app you want to launch, tangogps for example)
- a working ssh server with X11Forwarding yes in its config (for
openssh-server it's in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, be sure to restart ssh
server after any modification to this file)

Then give us any error you can see while doing your ssh -X.

On the freerunner, and after a ssh -X, $DISPLAY should NOT be :
localhost:0
because it's the X server of the freerunner, but it should be something
like :
localhost:10.0
which is where ssh server listen to transmit your display data to ssh
client.

Re: [SHR] X forwarding: export DISPLAY?

2010-08-17 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
To continue :

if you want to do it 'old school' without ssh -X doing the job for you,
you need to authorize your X server to accept distant X clients

To authorize X server of here to display application running on
faraway, you need to do (here$ is the prompt) :
here$ xhost +faraway

Then you need to log yourself on faraway (ssh without -X nor -Y, rsh,
telnet, xterm on freerunner...) and launch your application with a good
$DISPLAY
faraway$ DISPLAY=here:0 my_application

If it does not work :
- either faraway doesn't allow the X client to go out (firewall ?)
- or here has its X server running with -nolisten tcp and therefore
refuses any connection

If you have -nolisten tcp (check with ps), you can remove it but it
depends on how you launch your X server :
- if you use startx, check your /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc (or ~/.xserverrc)
- if you use gdm, launch gdmconfig and check security options)
- if you use kdm or xdm, I don't know :S

If you want to control the freerunner desktop from your PC, you could
use vnc.
On the freerunner you start x11vnc :
faraway$ x11vnc
but NOT from a ssh -X, you don't want any redirection here.

On your pc you start your vnc client :
here$vncviewer faraway:0

Xavier.
PS : use ip addresses instead of names like here and faraway

If pdf import fails, you need to find a pdf to svg tool to be able to

Rolling dices on OpenMoko

2010-07-25 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Hi folks,
a new application will be soon available for SHR (as soon as I
understood how to build a package) : alea

alea is a dice rolling application that you could use for role playing game.

It's a very simple application which uses python-elementary -- no 3D at
all, I would have love it but not enough time nor motivation --, here
are some screenshots :

Main page : you click on dices and score is automatically updated. If
you need more dices, click on Add. There are 2 complete dice sets, but
no more so buttons are big enough.
 http://imgur.com/8qxok.png
This should limits the number of action to do in order to roll few dices.

Second page (advanced) : a pad to enter a formula, like 5d6+5
Used formula are accessible through history, if you need to roll them
several times during your game (but it's not saved on disk, you have to
keep it running).
 http://imgur.com/Xth92.png
This should be useful for big roll.

Bug known : as formula becomes big, Roll button shrinks. I still don't
understand totally elementary :/

Todo list :
* allow to click on score to see details for each dice (some games
requires to keep only certain dices)
* add a '-' button hidden behind the '+' one (barely useful)
* maybe a roll sound and a persistent history

I will try to add it to SHR repository, but I don't understand what I
need to do to achieve this.

I hope you will like it,
Xavier Cremaschi.

PS : many thanks to podboy project, which is useful to discover how
python-elementary and elementary work :)

ringtone volume, intone boost, no alsa files

2010-05-20 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Hi folks,
I also missed some calls because of a too low ringtone.

Keeping Intone running seems to work, but then my FR can't go in sleep
mode (and it's good : I forbade it with fsoraw because I didn't want my
phone to go in sleep mode while listening some music)

Any idea to raise ringtone volume ?
Maybe modifying stereout.alsa ?

BTW I cannot find any .alsa files on my SHR-U (updated a few days ago)

Thanks for any help,
Xavier.

 Hi!

I was always wondering why I miss sometimes phonecalls.

I tried to level up the volume through fso-simplemixer.py,
but even at '101' percent, is not as much loud as with intone
 running.

If I launch intone while the phone is ringing, then the ringing
become louder, and if I quit then it get quiter.

What is really stranger, that intone set the volume through amixer:
 src/dbus-stuff.c:100

 sprintf(cmd, amixer -c 0 set PCM %d%s, vol, \%\n);

 And in my /usr/share/shr/scenarii/stereout.state file,
the PCM value is already at maximum(255):
 control.1 {
  comment.access 'read write'
  comment.type INTEGER
  comment.count 2
  comment.range '0 - 255'
  iface MIXER
  name 'PCM Volume'
  value.0 255
  value.1 255

 What I miss? Any idea?

 Best regards,

ps: since I discovered this, intone is always running.

The phone apps are displayed by an ui daemon app. IIRC it's called
phoneuid and starts on X startup, connects to the local DISPLAY and
phoneui-message and others just tell it to pop up the respective
 windows.

You could however try stopping it (killall phoneuid), then running it on
your ssh forwarded display and then running phoneui-messages...
You will have to kill it then again and run it on the freerunner's DISPLAY to
have your apps work on freerunner again.

 one more thing:

you may even just try to run a second phoneuid on your display (without
killing the local one). I don't know if the fso deamons/protocol allows
multiple gui clients to control the phone functions... but my guess is
 that it could work...

You should consider to upgrade in more than one step, as space in /tmp
 is limited.

Or simply create a tempdir on the SD card and upgrade using
 opkg -t /media/card/tmp upgrade

or permanentrly update tmp_dir option in /etc/opkg/opkg.conf for better
location if default /var/lib/opkg/tmp doesn't suit you

Solutions above in increasing level of convenience :)

:)
So I did my upgrade yesterday (720 packages) and it went fine.

Changing tmp_dir option in /etc/opkg/opkg.conf was mandatory because tmp
files during this update were ~100mo.

My contacts were ok because my SIM has always been empty and my contacts
were already in opimdb.

I had to install myself fso-gpsd (for tangogps), I think opkg
uninstalled it (tangogps worked before update).

Any way to fix it permanently ?

Rolling dices on OpenMoko

2010-03-08 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Hi folks,

I would like to develop a free software to roll dices (for role playing
games). My inspiration comes from : http://www.machwerx.com/apps/MachDice/
which seems to be a very great soft ! Lot of nice ideas, but only for
iPhone :(

I don't think I could make something better than this soft, which is the
result of lots of nice ideas (if you compare v1 and v2 you can see the
evolution), but -- being a coder and a role playing gamer -- here are my
goals :
- using MachDice ideas (entering formulas, having a formula history,
having workspaces, can block dices...), because these are great ideas
and I don't think it worth trying to find a better conception. MachDice
author you're a clever guy, kudos!
- a good looking soft, but with low graphics to fit openmoko abilities
- a portable software, because openmoko and non-openmoko users could be
interested (except iPhone users who already have this soft).
- having fun coding it (I don't think I will use it, I love rolling real
dices :P)

About coding :
- for 3D : OpenGl or ???
- for non-3D : Qt4 or EFL.

I am not sure about using OpenGl or not... I know the tech, and OpenGl
would be great when soft runs on PC, but what about openmoko ? AFAIK,
because of a lack of OpenGl ES support, any OpenGl app would run on
mesa/software-acceleration-by-cpu. Without OpenGl I don't know how I can
do 3d, any idea ?

For Qt4 vs EFL :
- qt4 is ok for ~all linux distribs, windows, and QtMoko (I think). What
about SHR ?
- elf is ok for ~all linux distribs (I think), SHR, and some packages
exists for windows
(http://fr.enlightenment.org/2009/05/31/efl-installateur-windows-xp/) so
portability is ok (linux = main target for me)

Thanks in advance for any advice (^^)

[SHR-t] Some tips needed

2010-01-18 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
Hi folks,

I am back on SHR since yesterday, and I need some tips to tweak it a bit.

But firstly, kudos to SHR team for their work. I used SHR until
September 2009, then QtMoko until December, then Android until
yesterday. SHR was quite slow and needed some tweaking, but now --
testing branch 14 january 2010 -- everything works out of the box (GPS,
wifi, phone, songs) and it's faster (even more if you put the new kernel
without debug/preempt) and with nice volume controls while calling !

My questions (from most important to less one):
- phone goes to sleep mode when tangogps is up and running. How could I
prevent that ? IIRC, there was a way to lock a hardware resource isn't it ?
- during a test call, my voice was a bit too loud. So I lowered the mic
volume while calling and it was better, but I think this setting has not
been saved. Is it normal ?
- desktop scrolling is still slow (alas), what were the effects to
disable or the theme to use to make it a bit faster ?
- midori has huge scroll bars (why a horizontal one ?), is there a way
to optimize the useful viewable area ? Or can you recommend any other
browser maybe ?

Thanks in advance,
Xavier.

 it's
simply not a good fit. You can say that the hardware does not fit E or that E
does not fit the hardware, the fact is we have much more free software to run
on the freerunner that free hardware to run E.

Finally! This was my point of view nothing else! :) Thank you for

But E *is able to perform this*, in a better way than the other solutions.

You seem to think E is an ambitious/too complicated/too slow piece of
software. You are obviously wrong here.

E is an optimized piece of software, probably the best one when you have
hard constraints (like on mobile devices).

Use a theme with -- as you wrote -- some simple widgets and you will
see that E is the fastest one.

And stop comparing E in SHR/Om2009 (complicated multi layer theme for a
not so good look) with QtMoko (simple theme for a good look), because
being 2x faster when you display 3x simpler widgets is not significant.

simply useless! You can't tell me you've written the best software in
the world if I can't use it or I have to limit it to the worst software,
it's a loosing approach, you dropped your energy in something useless.
This is what I claim Raster is wrong, nothing more (maybe using rude
words ok, but this is the point). He says if you run on a limited
hardware my software, to obtain the SAME results of Qt you cannot use my
calculations and optimizations so what? This is equals to say you
cannot use my software not my software is well written, do you agree
 with this?
 Bye.

No.
From the user point of view, a recipe :
- take SHR or Om2009
- put a simple theme instead of the default one
- notice it's very fast

Where is the part with the user who cannot use this or that ?

Please don't fool our brains and simply admit you are not able to work
on embedded systems as on desktop (and personally I've got some doubts
 even on this).

I beg to differ, your personal experience is not mine (E17 being damn
fast comparing to xfce). E17 is fuck**g fast on limited hardware.

I can't accept to read something like my code is highly optimized BUT
as you have a shi**y device you cannot run on it unless you deactivate
all its featuresgo work in Micro$oft and write their optimized
Aero GUI pretending to work on a 10Ghz quadcore Cray processor with 1TB
 RAM and 4 graphics card
 Be serious please...

I think you miss the point :
- qtmoko/qtopia is pretty because of good skin and good uniformity
- qt in qtmoko is very simple (for example no transparency, no fancy
controls...)
- E17 as used in shr/om200x uses more advanced things than qt in QtMoko
- E17 as used in shr/om200x is not as pretty as qt in qtmoko (well done
qtopia team !)

If you put the same things in both qt and E17 -- for example if you try
to mimic qtmoko gui with E17 and if you disable everything in E17 that
is useless in order to produce qtmoko gui-- E17 will be faster.

A fast FR means a simple GUI and QtMoko is simple and pretty... I would
say it's well balanced indeed, it fits well the FR. But E17 displaying
same simple gui controls would be faster, no doubt.

Re: Buy WikiReader [was: WikiReader]

2009-10-15 Thread Xavier Cremaschi
In our geeky daily life we are able to access to Wikipedia anywhere
(home, work, transport), on high-res full color devices (computer,
phones...).
Because hi-tech and Internet/Phone are everywhere.

This device gives you :
- offline access to Wikipedia
- on a cheap device (it could be cheaper if the company were bigger I
presume)
- which uses AAA batteries, available anywhere in the world.

We (US/EU/Jap) almost don't care about these 3 points, so I can
understand the omg fuck**g useless I've already got a wikipedia apps on
my iPhone, with images, colors and ponnies!.

But (IMHO) this device represents a new way to distribute Wikipedia.

Let's see the existing ones :
- a computer + internet : you need electricity, phone, Internet, a
computer (+ knowledge to use it)
- a computer + dvd : the same but you have removed the phone/Internet
dependency
- a smartphone (with or without provider) + an ebook reader software :
usually naked phone are a bit costly, but it could be cheaper than a
computer. You will need specific batteries when yours will die.
- a true ebook reader : ~= smartphone+software but easier to use I
presume (I don't know if there is an existing ebook reader able to read
Wikipedia but it seems a good solution)
- a real book (still a good way, maybe a bit heavy because of Wikipedia
size)

The wikireader :
- AAA batteries
- 3 buttons, and supposedly easy to use
- open soft and hard (I presume), sturdy

Ok this is the english version of wikipedia and it is sold in US/EU/Jap
(not the best market for it), but it's not *that* bad for a start :
geeks make you earn a bit of cash, and could start tweaking the
device... (ebook reader feature someone ?)
