Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files

2007-04-26 Thread Michael Lewis
Paula Minor sez:

Michael, I used iMovie and imported my mpg movie into it with no
problem and it plays but the sound is missing.

For anyone watching this thread, I'd just like to pass on that we fixed
Paula's sound issue. Both she and I located a free application called
MPEG StreamClip.

http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

iMovie does not import the soundtracks of some MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 movies
(insert a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo about sound file types, muxed and
demuxed, and other stuff here :) ). StreamClip will convert movies to
other file types. So, in this case, Paula converted the MPEG to Digital
Video (DV), brought it into iMovie, and then used the Share command to
save it with better compression so she could get it up on YouTube under
the 100MB filesize limit.

I'll let Paul tell more about the process as well as provide the link to
the movie she worked on. :)

Thanks to Michael and Apples discussion groups, I was able to find
the problem with the sound on my video file. My camera is not a real
digital video camerait was a Sony H5 photo camera so iMovie was
unable to recognize the sound. The free MPEG-Streamclip software did
the trick and was very easy to use...especially with Michael's step-
by-step web page. The quality after compression was decent.
The video clip is of a band called Cadillac Angels out of CA. They
are usually labeled as rockabilly but I call it just good old-
fashioned Rock and Roll ala Buddy Holly. Yeah, I know. I'm dating
myself. g But they're excellent muscians and put on a very
entertaining and foot-stomping performance with the lead guitarist,
Tony Balbinot, actually going outside the bar to perform on the
street for passers-by.
I'm not affiliated with the band in any wayjust think their
fabulous entertainment. My husband and I came across them by accident
when visiting Jerome, Arizona. They perform frequently at the Spirit
Room bar, a popular gathering place for the Harley Davidson crowd on
weekends. Here's the link to one of the videos. Im putting a
couple more up later today.

I think Handbrake is mainly a program for work with DVDs. I admit I
haven't looked at it very closely, so my initial look could be fooling
me. However, you should have everything you need on your Mac if you

iMovie or have purchased Quicktime Pro. Try what I've created at the

Michael, I used iMovie and imported my mpg movie into it with no
problem and it plays but the sound is missing. I checked all my
volume controls and they are on. If I play the mpg file on it's own,
the sound is there. What am I missing? The video is pointless
without the sound. I took the video with a sony H5 camera if that
makes any difference. I went ahead and did the compression,
following your instructions and it looked great but..no sound.

Any more ideas?
Thank you so much for helping me learn this.

Paula,

Michael is right. I use it for compressing DVD's, and it has great
compression algorithms, but it needs to start from a DVD source. OSrry
for the bum tip.

Michael, thank you.
I had to look to see if I had iMovie since I'd removed it from the
dock, figuring I'd never use it. Ha.

I'll give it a try.
And if any of you like old fashioned RR..shades of Buddy Holly!
look for the Cadillac Angels because they put on a fantastic show and
music is great. Hopefully I'll get that video on Youtube soon.

[CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files

2007-04-22 Thread Paula Minor
While in Jerome,AZ I took some video of a band that I want to upload
to YouTube. My MPG file is 500mb but Youtube limits you to 100 mb.
How do I go about compressing the video so that it's small enough to
upload? I'm on either an iMac G5 and I do have GarageBand if that
worksor a MacBook Pro laptop. JPG's I could handle but I've
never worked with video so haven't a clue.

Thanks!

Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files

2007-04-22 Thread Tom Piwowar
First thing to do is to frame the video to the size YouTube wants (320 x
240). If you have not already done this, it will make the file a lot
smaller.

Software, called a CODEC (COder-DECoder) does the compression. There are
many different CODECs with different properties. The two basic types of
CODEC produce eiter smaller files or better quality files. A transfer
CODEC is used to make files that you use for editing (high quality). A
delivery CODEC is used for making smaller files. Some CODECs are best
for specific types of images (like animations). The H.264 (QuickTime Pro
$29) and Sorenson (expensive) CODECs are good for making small video
files.

Other things you could do are reduce the frame rate or the data rate; or
ask for fewer key frames; or reduce the color depth; or lower the
quality setting (similar to making a smaller jpeg).

Large files at YouTube are commonly posted in sets so you may want to
break up the performance into several smaller units.
