The issue involves toxic chemicals and the possible effects that exposure to them can have on perfectly healthy people. It has all the elements of a classic cover-up - including a seemingly deliberate attempt to suppress the nature of serious physical problems now afflicting thousands of Operation Desert Storm veterans. According to recent news accounts, scientists commissioned by the Pentagon have been unable to come up with a single underlying cause for the variety of symptoms that have collectively come to be known as gulf war syndrome - a malady characterized by chronic fatigue and exhaustion, respiratory and cardiac problems, memory loss, aches and pains, rashes and tumors and a general breakdown in health. Only three or four months ago a likely explanation for the syndrome was being widely reported. The theory - accepted by no less than the commander of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Maj. Gen. Ronald Blanck - was that gulf war syndrome was nearly identical to a disorder suffered by a growing number of civilians. The condition, MCS or multiple chemical sensitivity, is one in which a whole series of medical problems can be triggered by various common, everyday chemicals following significant exposure to a more toxic substance. It seemed to make sense, considering the fact that the stricken veterans in most instances had undergone intense exposure not just to the noxious substances in oil fire smoke but to what a military journalist, Maj. Richard Haines, described as a toxic cocktail from a variety of sources while participating in the campaign. So why have all the references to MCS suddenly disappeared from the official dialogue on gulf war syndrome? Could there actually be no such malady as multiple chemical sensitivity? That's what the mainstream medical community has been maintaining for decades - that MCS simply doesn't exist and that doctors who claim it does and who offer detoxing and avoidance therapy (specialists in what is called environmental medicine) are merely quacks out to exploit gullible patients. As recently as December 1992, the American Medical Association's Council on Scientific Affairs was claiming that it should not be considered a recognized clinical syndrome. So what about those reports linking gulf war syndrome to MCS? Were they just another example of how cockamamie theories can get picked up by the media that didn't bother checking out their validity with the experts? That's what a lot of the experts would have you believe. For years, those same experts have been telling alleged MCS victims that their symptoms stem from an irrational perception that their environment is physically harmful to them and what they really need is psychiatric help. This premise, however, tends to become somewhat murky when one listens as well to enough people who claim to be afflicted with MCS. The accounts these individuals give of how their illnesses developed all seem to have a remarkable consistency. Most of them, in fact, sound as though they were perfectly normal, average people who had never given a thought to the possibility of chemicals jeopardizing their health before becoming acutely ill from a close encounter with some toxic substance and subsequently finding themselves unable to tolerate things like fragrances, detergents and pesticide fumes. They sound an awful lot, in fact, like those young, robust recruits whose health and vitality suddenly and inexplicably declined after relatively brief tours of duty in the Persian Gulf. They were also told after routine physicals examinations that what was wrong with them was purely psychological. The most striking similarity, however, can be found in the research done by Haines, who has spent two years interviewing hundreds of affected veterans. He claims that 95 percent reported suffering from a newly acquired sensitivity to low levels of common, everyday chemicals. The data he's collected have firmly convinced him that the great majority of them clearly have MCS. Nor is he the only one to report such findings. Accounts of MCS-like symptoms in Desert Storm veterans come from other sources as well, such as Dr. Myra Shayevitz, who works with patients at the Northampton, Mass., Veterans Administration Hospital. He is also one of a growing number of physicians who claim to have developed MCS themselves after being exposed to toxic agents in hospital environments. In a sense, the problem is all in their heads, according to Dr. Claudia S. Miller, who specializes in environmental and occupational medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and is co-author of the book Chemical Exposures: Low Levels and High

" You are sadly mistaken. I do not have to, nor will I sustain promulugation of disruption and 'evil'. Racism and nazism are evil created by man. That is were evil comes from, man. IMHO Go look in the archives, Hawk and his psuedonymphette Charlene added very few informational posts and if you read their posts, most are very disruptive and dissension creating. All of a sudden the lIst was topping over its 100 a message limit everyday and there is still 'stupid' dissension and discussion going on. The utility of the list is a big concern, for with more traffic comes problems of time and functionality of the list and then dealing with the 'problem'. For the problem must be dealt with or one is left with the spectacle such as alt.conspiracy, which is awash with " ideas directly challenge" your "own world view. " So if you wish to challenge your world view then go right ahead. Go to alt.conspiracy and wallow. I have found nothing in nazism, racism and dogmatic theocratism that is worth discussing, except about what they are, wrong. And I have challenged my world-view many times. Go, back in the archives and read the record and while you are at it you may notice all what you two fine persons have contributed to our understandings. To be honest, on most holidays, I'm barely even aware of what I'm supposed to be remembering. It's not like I spend Arbor Day walking around honoring every tree I see. They're trees. But I digress. MLK day is different. Dr. King's legacy is worth remembering, celebrating, and learning from. But as time passes, and as hundreds of white TV producers have their visibly multicultural ActionNewsTeams replay the same Top Ten images of Dr. King's life like a Southern Baptist Greatest Hits video, the memory of this very real, very courageous activist for peace, for the poor, and for civil rights is starting to fade into a cuddly feel-good Disneyfied hugfest with not much greater meaning than the halftime show at the Super Bowl. We shouldn't let that happen. Rarely is even a single word devoted to the years of Dr. King's life following the March On Washington of 1963, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the four-minute pop histories of Dr. King's life that air on MSNBCNN every MLK day, that's where the story usually stops. But that's not where the man himself stopped. More than just racial equality, non-violence was the core of Dr. King's philosophy. Racism is the most prominent of the forms of violence to the human spirit that he fought so well against. But in the last years of Dr. King's life, he became a leading opponent of U.S. militarism abroad and a powerful advocate for the nation's poor at home. And unlike Jim Crow laws, we still have a runaway military and way too many poor people. So the last years of Martin Luther King's life aren't nearly as comfortable to contemplate. Especially on a TV network owned by General Electric. But save for a sniper's bullet, Dr. King might still be alive today, preaching the same gospel of solving hatred and racism and violence of all kinds through forgiveness, peace, and love for our enemies as well as our neighbors. So if we do want to honor Dr. King's memory, if we truly want him live to on in our hearts, maybe we can reflect what he might say about our world today. What would Dr. King say about our criminal justice system, for example --where prisons are becoming privatized and operated for private profit, the death penalty has made a grim comeback, and more people are imprisoned per capita than in any western nation, blacks far more so than whites? What would Dr. King say is the real cause of the growth of hate groups nationwide? How would he suggest we deal about them? What would Dr. King say about a corporate media that maximizes profit by sensationalizing pretty, violent crimes in the gutter, while censoring grand, and far more violent crimes in the penthouse? What would Dr. King say about U.S. policy in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan? And -- most importantly -- what would he [do] about all of it? It's a lot more challenging to think about Dr. King and his life in this way. But then, isn't challenging ourselves to contemplate the justice of our society -- and the non-violent means we can improve it -- precisely what his memory is supposed to be about? ___ What exactly constitutes "sex?" Personally, I think it's a) anything you do naked, that b) makes you say any word more than five times in a row. But that's just my definition. You surely have your own. Thing is, the perjury shindig in D.C. really balances on where and how we define the word "sex." If you personally consider the uvula an erogenous zone, then you probably think Clinton committed perjury. If not, not. But does it make sense that the definition of "sex" most of the media has accepted unquestioningly is the one provided by Clinton's accusers, most of whom regard as sin any oral skill beyond speaking in tongues? That's like choosing between AOL and Earthlink by asking the Amish. Ultimately, whether or not Clinton committed perjury rests largely on whether his proclaimed definition of "sex" -- which excludes tonsil hockey -- is or is not credible to typical Americans. ENTRY AND FATE OF CHEMICALS IN HUMANS ROUTES OF ENTRY Chemicals, including pesticides, are widely distributed in the environment. Therefore there are many possible sources of exposure to these chemicals for humans. Substances which are in ambient and indoor air may be inhaled into the lungs while those in water or food may be ingested or inhaled through mist or steam (such as in the shower). Direct contact with the chemical is the most prevalent way environmental chemicals can penetrate the skin, but exposure through the skin may also occur as a result of contact with chemical contaminants in air and water (for example bathing or swimming). A single chemical can enter the body through all three routes of exposure -- inhalation, ingestion and skin penetration (dermal exposure). A compound, such as chloroform, which evaporates readily and which may be found in drinking water illustrates this point. When this water is used for drinking, ingestion is the route of exposure. When it is used for showering, exposure may occur due to inhalation of the steam or mist and from direct contact through the skin. Similarly, pesticide use can involve more than one route of exposure if precautions are not taken. A pesticide which is sprayed can be inhaled during use; penetrate through the skin during mixing and application; and be ingested through food if not washed off hands or food before eating. ABSORPTION, DISTRIBUTION AND FATE Once a chemical enters the body, it is often absorbed into the bloodstream and can move throughout the body. The amount absorbed and the rate of absorption depend on the chemical and the route of exposure. This movement of the substance through the bloodstream is called distribution. Through distribution a chemical can come into contact with all parts of the body, not only the original site of entry. In some cases, such contact, distant from the site of entry, can lead to adverse health effects. For example, ingestion of the pesticide parathion into the stomach can lead to damage to the lungs. Once a chemical is absorbed into the bloodstream, it can have several different fates. In many cases, it is rapidly removed from the body through the urine or feces. In other situations, it may be stored in various parts of the body, such as fat or bone, and remain in the individual for many years. A compound may also lead to a toxic effect through interaction with certain organs or tissues in the individual or with other compounds in the body. Often, a substance which is absorbed into the body interacts with particular body chemicals and is changed into one or more other chemicals. This process is called metabolism and the products are called metabolites. Metabolism may lead to products which are easier for the body to excrete and so can protect the body from possible adverse effects. In other cases, however, the metabolites may be more toxic than the original chemical which was absorbed. The variety of products resulting from metabolism may have the same possible fates as the original chemical -- storage, excretion or toxicity. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES The particular properties of the absorbed chemical are quite critical to its fate in the body. Certain chemicals are very resistant to metabolism and readily dissolve in fat so that they tend to be stored. Dieldrin is a good example of this type of compound. Other chemicals are more rapidly metabolized and excreted and are gone before they can cause adverse effects. The organophosphate pesticides tend to behave this way at low doses. AN INDIVIDUAL'S CHARACTERISTICS The characteristics of the individual who is exposed are also very important in the fate of the chemical. The age, sex, genetic background, previous exposures, diet and other factors play important roles in the way that the body interacts with a chemical and in turn the potential for adverse effects. Thus, the characteristics of both the chemical and the exposed individual are important factors determining the fate of the chemical in the body. THE TIME COURSE FOR EXPOSURE In the case of a single event exposure, it is the total amount of chemical to which a person is exposed that determines the severity of the toxic effect, if any. He said it was the largest he had ever seen and it was in broad daylight between 4:30PM and 5:00PM CST. It was as large as his fist on his extended arm. The body of this fireball itself was a brilliant white color and it had a red and green tail. It was travelling from north to south and was about 45 degrees above the horizon. He also said that while it did appear to be falling, it was still travelling in a more straight forward than downward direction. This sighting took place in an area called Tarrant City, just outside of the Birmingham city limits to the northeast. Was just wondering if there had been any other sightings from anywhere else today. Fine, lots of that in the military too. When he came back, she welcomed him with open arms and lots of smiles. All went on as usual. A few months later, she again packed him up and drove him to base operations to catch a plane to the states. He was going home to get married. After a couple of weeks, he came back again, and again she welcomed him with open arms and lots of smiles, and their relationship continued as it was until he rotated. Now that shocked me. You will please observe that most of the time when the military get really officious about these matters, they involve fraternization. That's any relationship between officers and enlisted. They are pretty sticky about that. I remember one general who was having an affair with an enlisted guy's wife, but he fixed it by having her husband made an officer. (He was a Marine Corps general; I don't think the others have the power to do that anymore.) If an officer's child happens to be enlisted and comes home to visit, he advised not to wear his uniform. So you can see, they really don't want the two castes to mix. Anyway, no matter what these folks try to tell us these days, there's a whole lot of sex going on in the military. -Caveat Lector- From wsws.org WSWS : Workers Struggles : North America American retailers involved in sweatshop racketeering on US-Pacific territory By Cory Johnson 19 January 1999 Three lawsuits filed January 13 in California state court on behalf of 50,000 foreign garment workers charge major US retailers with "racketeering conspiracy" for producing clothing with indentured labor under sweatshop conditions on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US Commonwealth in the South Pacific. The suits seek $1 billion in damages, including unpaid wages against 18 US retailers and manufacturers. Among them are The Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Sears, Wal-Mart, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Lord and Taylor's, Hecht's and Mervyn's. Another 22 garment factories, owned by Chinese and South Korean capitalists, are charged with failing to pay overtime and other violations. Saipan products carry the "Made in the USA" label, supposedly indicating to consumers a certain degree of regulation by law and quality of working conditions. But under a process overseen by US retailers and guarded by Congress huge profits have been reaped under severe exploitation. Workers, predominantly women from China, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Thailand, paid $2,000 to $7,000 to recruiters anticipating they would receive high-paying jobs in the United States. Many signed "shadow contracts," waving basic human rights, including the prerogative to marry or date. They were forced to labor 12-hour days, seven days a week, without overtime compensation. In some cases workers worked up to 20 hours a week "off the clock." In the last five years the factories have been cited for 1,000 OSHA violations, many capable of causing injury or death. Codes of conduct are posted, but in English, which workers cannot read. Extreme heat conditions in the factories commonly caused workers to faint. When not on the job workers are crowded up to eight people to a room in barbed wire-enclosed barracks supervised by guards. The food that workers had to buy was bug-infested. Opposition to conditions is countered with threats of firing, physical abuse and deportation. Carmencita Abad, originally from the Philippines, labored for six years in Saipan and was fired for trying to form a union and aid Chinese coworkers. "If they complain," she said, "Chinese workers can be beaten or punished. This abuse occurs while US retailers watch. I have seen many times the Gap inspector come into the factory, look at the garments and fabric, then turn and walk out the door." "Unfortunately, slavery and indentured servitude is alive and well in the many parts of the world, including the United States," declared William S. Lerach, one of the lead attorneys on the case. "Companies like The Gap and Wal-Mart have reaped millions in profits from this scheme--now they will be held accountable." Al Meyerhoff, another lead attorney, said, "To allow such squalid conditions to persist on American soil is both patently unlawful and morally reprehensible. Saipan is America's worst sweatshop." The moving of foreign factories onto the US territory of Saipan allowed US retailers to avoid more than $200 million in duties on $1 billion in garments. By relocating to Saipan the foreign interests have avoided import restrictions. Chinese production in Saipan is believed to have exceeded its import quota by 250 percent in 1997 alone. Today, so-called "guest" workers comprise over 90 percent of the garment industry work force in the Marianas. In turn this work force constitutes more than half of the Marianas total population of 70,000. -Caveat Lector- From wsws.org WSWS : News Analysis : Europe : Britain Public inquiry in Britain Police officers evade disciplinary charges in racist killing of Stephen Lawrence By Tony Hyland 19 January 1999 The only senior officer to face disciplinary charges arising from the police handling of the murder investigation into the 1993 racist killing of 18-year-old black student Stephen Lawrence is to retire. The news broke only 20 hours after the publication of a report by the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) which stated that the officer--Detective Inspector Ben Bullock--was to face an internal tribunal over seven counts of neglect of duty. Those accused of the stabbing death of Stephen Lawrence at a bus stop in Eltham, South-East London--Neil and Jamie Acourt, Luke Knight, Gary Dobson and David Norris--have never been prosecuted due to the police's mishandling of the investigation and the claim by the judiciary of insufficient evidence as a result. Bullock was second in command of the murder investigation. His retirement is due to take effect in May, before the disciplinary hearing is scheduled. The timing of the decision was described as "a coincidence". He was the last serving officer involved in the murder investigation, the other four having retired earlier. A source close to the PCA stated that they too would have faced charges if they had not pursued this course of action. The PCA was also obliged to criticise other aspects of police conduct. This included the three senior officers having failed to keep a logbook at the scene of the stabbing and that, despite the fact that the victim was losing blood, no one took responsibility for monitoring his condition. The PCA advised that the officers concerned receive "formal advise" on the question of logbooks. After acknowledging what amounts to a litany of malpractice, the PCA has failed to produce any credible explanation for such a state of affairs. It is adamant that racism played no part in the police's behaviour. The authority's conclusions were made before the public inquiry began early last year. In its first phase, based upon oral and written evidence, the police and judicial system have been severely discredited for allowing the perpetrators of the racist killing to enjoy immunity. Both the police claim that they lacked sufficient evidence to apprehend those responsible and that of the prosecution service of a similar lack of evidence for prosecution were proven to be false. The inquiry heard how: Detective Inspector Bullock failed to respond to an informer implicating five white youths in Lawrence's murder, only 24 hours after the killing. His conduct was described as having shown "considerable indifference". Detective Superintendent Brian Weeden, who headed the investigation for 18 months, was an officer of 30 years experience. He claimed that he was not conversant with an elementary point of criminal law, saying that he did not think the five white youth involved in the attack could be arrested on the grounds of "reasonable suspicion". Detective Chief Superintendent Jeynes threw away a piece of paper on which Doreen Lawrence, Stephen's mother, had written the names of five of the suspects. Contrary to the police version that no one came forward to help with their inquiries, 26 people provided information pointing to the killers between April and May 1993. Detective Superintendent Ian Crampton, in charge of the murder investigation for the first 72 hours, failed to act on numerous tip-offs. The police also failed to follow up the evidence of a young black man who, three days after the murder, was threatened by one of the suspects, "You're next!" Two weeks were allowed to elapse before the five suspects were finally arrested, allowing ample time for forensic evidence to be destroyed. Detective Chief Superintendent Roderick Barker, a veteran of more than 200 murder investigations, carried out an internal police review of the initial police investigation omitting any criticisms of its proceedings. For years this was cited against the Lawrence family's criticisms of the police. At the public inquiry, Barker was dismissed by the chairman as "not credible" and his report described as "indefensible". The final stage of the inquiry is the publication of its findings and recommendations, which is meant to outline proposals to ensure that such an injustice will not be repeated in future. Yet only weeks before this report is due, the police and the PCA have once again utilised early retirement to ensure its officers are protected from prosecution. -Caveat Lector- Yesterday, after thinking about the AMA-JAMA survey sex firing impartial publication issue, I went looking for involvement in politics by the AMA. All I came up with is the site shown below for political affiliation. If the firing of that fellow was done to avoid 'politicking' or 'politicising' the journal, it was done fairly quickly -- almost surgically. The site lists no direct political affiliation that I can find. BUT: there is politics (and $$$?). I did find one for Texas where all of the endorsement for 'medically friendly' candidates was listed. (In trying to re-locate that site, I found one more.) So, I was unsuccessful on one count and found two other things instead. Morgan's denials, it is time for intermission, for soda and popcorn, for stretching cramped legs. The following screen fodder is a meditation, an illumination, and none of it is factual. * BEGIN INTERMISSION This is *not* a story about who actually pulled the trigger on Vince Foster. For in any case, Vince Foster is dead. This is *not* a story about any specific company, such as the allegations against Systematics, for if no such company existed, then the NSA would create one. Or several. It is *not* a story about money-laundering in Mena, Arkansas, because money-laundering doesn't alarm me. Anyone who has read my essay "The End of Ordinary Money" (currently in two parts) knows that I think the money-laundering laws are an odious intrusion into financial privacy, and should be abolished. It is *not* a story about Charles O. Morgan. But the accuracy of Morgan's assertions is relevant to under- standing what has happened and is happening. Even though Morgan is a fine lawyer and a man of impeccable character, his research mistakes could lead some to erroneously conclude that he is a fool or a paid liar. This is *not* a story about any particular foreign power: whether Russia, China, France, Germany, Israel, or the United Kingdom. But any country that has shit on the carpet deserves to have its nose rubbed in the evidence. There are no privileged foreign powers. This is *not* an attack on the NSA monitoring of foreign missile and nuclear programs. The acquistion of information for self-protection is a fundamental human right, and those who don't exercise this right often end up dead. But I just want to know what the fuck NSA's doing in my checking account. This is *not* a story about Cap Weinberger, BUT HOW AND WHY DID HE GET JIM NORMAN'S STORY KILLED? This *is* a story about the uses of propaganda, whereby appeals to "terrorism," "money-laundering," "child pornography," and other handy bugaboos are cited by the Overlords of the Surveillance State as an excuse to send jack-booted thugs to "protect us," to monitor our every action to make sure we toe the current political line, and to create vast financial data bases to ensue we get taxed to pay for all of the above. This *is* a story about hypocrisy, whereby the friends of Bill Clinton and George Bush may launder millions of dollars at will, but the hoi polloi are prosecuted for "structuring" two $7500 cash payments. It *is* a story about a corrupt and evil judiciary system that has filled 60 percent of prison space with minor drug offenders, with a resultant overcrowding causing early release of murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals in order to make more room for marijuana smokers. It *is* a story about a "war on drugs" conducted to increase monopoly profit margins, to provide a cash flow for widespread political payoffs, and to provide continuing employment for psychotic law enforcement officials. This *is* a story about a political equation which says "investigative body" = cover-up commission whereby one conducts a thorough investigation into the evidence or witnesses that have been left laying around, so that the evidence can be burned, and the witnesses silenced or killed. This *is* a story about the media participation in this process, whereby promoted stories are referred to as "well-researched and well documented" while suppressed stories are labelled "conspiracy theories." In a recent extreme case, a major news organization elicited witnesses and video-taped them for "an expose on Mena," then later killed the story. Meanwhile, copies of the video tapes were turned over to goons who subsequently killed some of the same witnesses. This *is* a horror story that made me toss and turn at night, until I recalled the words of my friend Jack Wheeler, who told me: "We created a doctrine to do in the Soviet empire. And it worked. It's now time to do in the Washington empire." And reflecting on these words, I fell peacefully asleep. And I had a dream.

They wanted to increase the price of Bananas to the USA. The chief instigators were the Dulles brother(Skull and bones connections) Who then managed to kill 3rd worldd nationalism and make a profit at the same time. Blunt. The way the piece is written strongly suggests(to me ) that Victor Rothschilds knew of Blunt's activities and was helping him gain admittance to MI5(recruiting for the MI% and the KGB) at the same time. Blunt remained keeper of the queens pictures almost right to the end, which is weird...unless coleman is right. That Hammer was a communist agent of influence has now been cofirmed from the moscow archives. Mr Hoffmans story also shows the connections between him and the anglo establishment(Nixon was a protege of Rockerfeller , hoover a 33degree mason and an unusual dresser, and bush a bones man) I still get lost in the widerness of shattered mirrors. By Larry Tye. crown; 320 pages; $27.50 WHEN Edward Bernays and his wife Doris married in 1922, they wanted a modern wedding, stripped of the pomp and ceremony that symbolised the enslave-ment of woman to man. So they did it se- cretly, in the marriage chapel of the New York Municipal Building, and planned to let the news out casually, some weeks later. But with his passion for publicity, Bernays could not bear it. The moment they got to the Waldorf-Astoria, Doris recalled,"My husband grasped the telephone and called hundreds of his most intimate friends to tell them about our secret marriage." To describe Bernays as the "father of spin" is, well, putting a bit of a spin on it. People were puffing their clients' achievements long before the Greek historian Thu-cydides composed the fine speeches that Athenian generals supposedly made. But Bernays was one of the most interesting figures in the spin business at a buccaneering time. American consumerism was taking off, there was plenty of demand for the services of public-relations men and none of the tiresome modern restrictions on advertis-ing that today make it harder to tell bald-faced lies. One of Bernays's skills was sensing where public opinion was moving, and using it in his favour. His first success was a campaign for the American To-bacco Company to encourage women to smoke. Slimness was becoming fashionable for women, so he flogged cigarettes as a healthy alternative to sweets, enlisting the help of "experts" to claim in the press that cigarettes also disinfected the mouth. Women were still resistant, though; which was when Bernays had the brilliant idea of using cigarettes as a symbol of emancipation. He put it about in the papers that the taboo against women smok-ing in public was symptomatic of male oppression, and organised a march down Fifth Avenue of fashionable young women with their "torches of freedom". He orches-trated massive press coverage (which omitted to mention that the march was led by his secretary). Aftetwards, newspapers carried reports of women being seen smoking in the street; and within a few weeks, the 12 Broadway theatres changed their rules to allow women into their smoking rooms. Bernays also invented a tool much-used since: the front organisation. When, for instance, a new government in Guatemala threatened to take over some of the vast plantations of the United Fruit Company, and distribute it among the peasants, Bernays set up the Middle America Information Bureau. United Fruit financed the Bureau, which provided information to the newspapers about communist penetra-tion in Guatemala. The newspapers printed the information, the American public was inflamed, there was a CIA-backed insurgency and the elected government was toppled and replaced by a right-wing totalitarian regime. Most ofthe interest in this entertaining book comes from the meticulous effrontery of Bernays's campaigns; but there is an ideological conundrum, too, at the centre of it. Bernays was a passionate individualist who wrote voluminously about the need to defeat communism by manipulating opinion of the masses through the skilful use of propaganda. The paradox did not, apparently, trouble him. Too much of the book is devoted to Bernays's personal life which, aside from the fact that he was Sigmund Freud's nephew, and that while preaching the emancipation of women he did not lift a finger in the house, is uninteresting until after his

A mysterious crop duster, spotted over Washington, D.C., infects up to 3 million residents with fatal anthrax spores. Movie mayhem? Science-fiction scenarios? Unfortunately not -- the threat of biological attack, right here at home, is increasingly real. The January 1999 issue of Reader's Digest magazine spells out just how easy such an attack might be, and why bioterrorism is an urgent concern at the highest levels of U.S. government. Anthrax, smallpox and bubonic plague have all been ``weaponized'' in easy-to-spread form, the magazine warns in ``Are We Ready for Bioterror?'' Health and security officials fear the Ebola and Marburg fevers -- for which no vaccine exists -- could someday be used as well. Whatever the disease of choice, bioweapons are easy to carry and conceal -- and innocent civilians would be dying in agony before authorities even realized an attack had occurred. The attackers could even be fellow Americans, warns Reader's Digest contributing editor Rachel Wildavsky. A Defense Department official tells her of chilling Internet chat rooms, where violence-prone militia members swap tips on how to make poisons such as ricin, a castor-bean derivative that starts to kill on contact. Most experts, however, believe that only a foreign government would have the kind of facilities needed to mount a major biological attack. Foreign governments such as Iraq -- which has previously admitted stockpiling enough anthrax and botulinum to kill everyone on Earth. While Iraqi officials now claim to have destroyed this toxic arsenal, few believe this to be true. ``Recent tensions over Iraq's weapons of mass destruction have underscored our need to understand just what bioterror can do,'' Wildavsky says. ``The experts who know the most are among the most frightened by it.'' And Iraq is not the only threat. Unemployed Russian scientists may be peddling their bioweapon expertise to the highest bidders, possibly including China, India or terrorist forces in Afghanistan. Whatever the odds of preventing an attack, Wildavsky reports that the U.S. is shockingly ill-prepared to handle the aftermath: ·Detection is poor. Only two labs in the entire country -- the CDC in Atlanta, and an Army facility in Maryland -- are equipped to test for a full range of diseases such as anthrax or smallpox. When an Oregon religious cult spread salmonella bacteria on restaurant salad bars, sickening 751 people in 1984, federal investigators were unable to trace the cause of the outbreak until cult informants came forward more than a year later. ·No city in America has enough beds or medical staff. While the U.S. Public Health Service maintains an emergency strike team, the federal government can only do so much. Each city must have its own emergency plan and keep it current. ·We're low on vaccines, and much of what we do have is reserved for the military. Only 7 million usable doses of smallpox vaccine currently exist for a population of 270 million. ·Our planning for a contagious attack is particularly weak. Yugoslavia's autocratic rulers were able to halt a 1972 smallpox outbreak by quarantining the sick with guards and barbed wire. What American city is prepared to do that? The best weapon against terrorism is to stop it before it starts, by convincing our enemies that retribution would be swift and terrible. Government insiders say that fear of retaliation may be all that is preventing an Iraq or Iran from putting bioweapons into the hands of its American-based agents. But as terrorism expert Steven Emerson tells Reader's Digest, ``We have blinked too often in the recent confrontation with Iraq. A perception that we won't necessarily deliver emboldens terrorist groups.'' Col. David Franz (Ret.), former commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, believes that ``a mass-casualty -producing event'' could occur within the next 10 years. Even Defense Secretary William S. Cohen fears a biological attack on U.S. soil ``is not a remote possibility but a real probability in the present. No President has worked harder to protect his personal privacy while attacking the privacy of Americans. The Clinton war against personal privacy includes invasions of medical, financial and digital privacy. According to a TOP SECRET document obtained from the National Security Council (NSC) the Clinton secret project to bug America started in late 1992. The NSC document details secret meetings between top Bush administration officials and the Clinton transition team. According to the documentation, ATT had developed new secure telephone technology that also blocked Federal wiretaps. The Bush administration presented a recommendation to the Clinton transition team that the Federal government secretly purchase the secure phones from ATT in order to keep them out of the American public market. According to the NSC documentation, ATT eagerly agreed to the secret sale. In early 1993, President Clinton issued an executive order that authorized Janet Reno to secretly purchase the entire inventory of secure phones from ATT. Ms. Reno purchased the secure phones using money confiscated from the war on drugs. Reno tasked Webster Hubbell, the former Whitewater partner of Hillary Clinton, to run the phone buy out from ATT. Hubbell arranged for a follow-up contract with ATT to modify the secretly purchased secure telephones with a newly developed government chip. ATT was paid to rip out the secure chip they developed for the telephones and replace it with the special chip that had a secret, Watergate style, bug hidden in it at the micro level. The chip was called "Clipper." In 1993, the Clinton administration allowed a select set of civilians from ATT and other companies to go inside the NSA to examine the Clipper chip in detail. The civilians obtained access to classified details under special clearances that swore them all to secrecy. ATT scientists were not the only civilians authorized to view the secrets of Clipper. The project also included the First Lady. Mrs. Clinton wanted every American to carry a Clipper chip. Mrs. Clinton's efforts to nationalize the medical industry included the Clipper chip in her health care legislation. According to information obtained by the Freedom of Information act (FOIA), each American citizen was to be issued a national ID/health care card with a Clipper chip installed inside. In fact, one medical health care card manufacturer complained that including the special chip was too expensive. In 1993 the Clipper "exploitable" feature was exposed to the public and the entire project fell into disfavor until it was officially canceled in 1996. Clipper violated the first rule of information warfare - secrecy. A secret back door (bug) must remain secret in order to be useful. Yet, Clipper was never really canceled. Nor has the covert program to bug America stopped. The exposure of the Clinton bug-on-a-chip project did not end with its cancellation. The publicity only drove the effort back under-cover. Back into the black world of "codeword" secrets and Clinton cronyism. Admiral McConnell was the National Security Agency (NSA) Director under Clinton and Bush. Admiral McConnell is often thought of as the father of the "Clipper" chip. During an exclusive interview, the former NSA Director made it very clear that the computer security point man for President Clinton was "John Podesta". According to secret White House email sent by current CIA Director George Tenet, "John Podesta" - then Deputy Executive Secretary to the President, was the top Clinton official on all policy matters concerning computers and encryption. "We had a long meeting this morning in John Deutch's office on encryption which included, Admirals, McConnel, Studeman, John Podesta and other luminaries," wrote Tenet in December 1993. Further evidence that John Podesta controlled computer policy is revealed in dozens of letters from top computer executives, all complaining about the Clipper project. In the early 1990s, several U.S. computer CEOs formed a joint lobby organization called the CSPP or Computer Systems Policy Project. By 1994, Tony Podesta, the brother of John Podesta, ran the multi-million dollar corporate lobby effort through his firm, Podesta Associates, using his employee, Ken Kay, as the CSPP executive director. In 1994, the CSPP association with Tony Podesta quickly paid off. Several CSPP members won exclusive trade deals through Clinton and Ron Brown. One CSPP computer CEO, James Treybig of Tandem, traveled with Ron Brown to China in August 1994. Treybig concluded an exclusive $150 million export of mission control computers for the Chinese Army Long March space rocket. While awaiting a ruling, I turned my attention to the disgusting charade being played out in Washington. There truly is a spirit of bipartisanship among the participants, but it is a bipartisan conspiracy to cover-up real crimes. My outrage with all involved - Bill Clinton, Kenneth Starr, and every member of Congress - is also "bipartisan." Several years ago, I met a reporter, I'll call Charlie. He is now investigating for CNBC's Geraldo Rivera -- running down fraudulent activities of "right-wing conspirators." Charlie contacted me last summer when he found my name all over the expense account of one Tom Golden, an investigator for Richard Mellon Scaife. Golden claimed several dinners with me in Houston, Dallas, and Hot Springs and a breakfast in a high-dollar hotel in Dallas. The fact is, I talked with Golden twice on the phone and never met him. While I am offended by Golden's lying and cheating, I am sickened by the amount of money thrown away by Scaife to dig up dirt on Clinton, irrespective of the credibility of his sources. If Linda and I had a fraction of Scaife's money and resources, the "train deaths" would be solved, George Bush and the CIA would be labeled the gun-running/drug-smuggling operators they are, and Bill Clinton would be defending himself against irrefutably impeachable crimes for his participation as the protector of the Mena operation. But Scaife is obviously not interested in seeking truth and justice; his interest is purely partisan politics. Charlie called again last month, asking about a video he had seen of me speaking with legislators in Congressman Bob Livingston's office. The meeting was in the fall of 1994. Pat Matrisciana had tried to persuade me to tell of my Arkansas experiences on a new production that was to become "The Clinton Chronicles." I refused to go public while still working with the FBI, but Pat persuaded me that his Republican friends in D.C. should hear about Saline County Prosecutor Dan Harmon running a criminal enterprise (http://www.idmedia.com/curious-timing.htm), U.S. Attorney Chuck Banks receiving a federal judgeship nomination after clearing Harmon (http://www.idmedia.com/harmon2.htm), and the FBI confirming the connection between the "train deaths" and Mena drugs. At that point, the attention turned to John Brown, who mouthed a lot of gibberish about Clinton and the Mafia - expounding on tales he had heard but possessed no evidence of. After Brown wound down, I asked why none of them were interested in the cover-up of Mena crimes. Livingston said that Barry Seal was dead and the drug smuggling operation died with him. I tried to argue, but was cut off and ushered out of the office. After relating the story to Charlie, I asked what he knew about Congressman Leach's long-anticipated report on Mena. Charlie told me he has a friend close to the House investigation who told him the report was not to be released. "Why?" I demanded. Charlie's source told him, "The investigation exposes two Presidents as primarily responsible for the Mena operation, and one of them is not Bill Clinton." The way I see it, our illustrious leaders from both sides of the aisle are nothing more than a bunch of hypocritical, egotistical, amoral, ranting fools - and that is likely an understatement. They will go down in history as sex-scandal mongers who ignored and denied real crimes to protect their own. Kenneth Starr is no better. This was two days after Bill Clinton said that he did not know Wang Jun the Chinese gun smuggler who was passing on automatic machine guns with silencers into the inner cities. The automatic machine guns were being stored within two miles of Jacobson's bombing. Jun's employees said they could get surface to air missiles on March 26,1996, only a few days before Ron Brown's plane crashed over Yugoslavia on April 3, 1996. Think of Kennedy's escapades - what no one mentions is that it led to sexual harassment suits being recognized in court. That no one was above the law. What has Clinton done? Gotten hold of the statistics, used the special interest groups and fed up a bunch of. I believe it is called "Divide and Conquer"? From Prudy You will please observe that most of the time when the military get really officious about these matters, they involve fraternization. That's any relationship between officers and enlisted. They are pretty sticky about that. To me this would imply that the military does not approve of pedophilia in any form. Orlin Grabbe When hedge fund Long Term Capital Management lost 44 percent of its capital last August, and in September had to be bailed out by a consortium of banks organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, it was the victim of "low- probability events." These events included Italian bond prices diverging from, instead of converging to, German bond prices, and US Treasury bond prices rising relatively faster than corporate and municipal issues. Two of the founding shareholders of LTCM were Robert Merton and Myron Scholes, Nobel-prize- winning economists. I find it ironic that in the only extended conversation I have had with Merton, he was dismissive of probability distributions involving just such low-probability events. In grad school at Harvard, I was working on a category of "infinite variance" distributions that seemed to characterize financial markets better than the more commonly known "normal" or Gaussian distribution. Saying the variance is "infinite" is another way of saying that sample variance is not a useful way to measure risk in a probability distribution, since any measure of variance will jump about at random, and eventually diverge to infinity as the sample size is increased. Market prices, such as exchange rates, commodity prices, and interest rates, have proportional changes that are too "leptokurtic" to represent drawings from a normal or Gaussian distribution. That is, by reference to the Gaussian distribution, they have (1) a greater proportion of very small deviations from the mean; (2) a greater proportion of very large deviations from the mean (namely, those "low-probability events"); but (3) a smaller proportion of intermediate deviations from the mean. Albert Makashov made in November. For many observers in Russia and especially in the West, that came as an unpleasant surprise. Over the past few years, a lot of effort has been put into creating a myth about the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF); its leader, Gennady Zyuganov; and its place in the political system of present-day Russia. The myth went something like this: there is a big, bad Yeltsin regime in Russia. It is confronted by the opposition led by Zyuganov and his Communists. The fact that the party is called "communist" is most likely a tribute to tradition. Since Zyuganov has repeatedly assured his audiences in the West that all forms of ownership would be maintained if he came to power, he is not a communist but more of a social democrat. He plays according to the rules of a civilized society, and one could make deals with him. Some have even argued that one could presumably cooperate with Zyuganov in combating xenophobia and racism and in halting the proliferation of fascist organizations and ethnic conflicts. After all, the argument went, communists and social democrats were not so long ago enemies of Nazism, so KPRF, now evolving toward social democracy, could well become a bulwark against the danger of fascism. That myth, however, has been fully exposed, precisely over such sensitive issues as fascism, Nazism, and anti-Semitism. There is only one thing in that line of reasoning one could have agreed with: Zyuganov is no communist. Just look at what he has written in his Derzhava (State Power) and Za gorizontom (Beyond the Horizon). According to Zyuganov the writer, there was no Stalin terror, there was no repression, there were no innocent victims. Nikita Khruschev's report at the 20th Communist Party Congress "On Stalin's Personality Cult" was inspired by the CIA. The world view, the culture, and the ideology of the West are increasingly influenced by the Jewish community. The latter is becoming the major shareholder of the entire economic system of Western civilizat ion. Under these circumstances, Russia will be the only barrier against Western hegemony. The Communists, along with the Duma faction of Vladimir Zhirinovsky, have been blocking, year after year, legislation against Nazism, fascism, and extremism. I myself submitted a draft on responsibility for publicly expressed justification of the crimes of Nazism (similar to the existing German law on the issue) a year ago. But the Communists unanimously let that bill die. So why is Zyuganov not condemning General Makashov? The reason is simple: if he did, Communist voters, shaped by party-fanned xenophobia and anti-Semitism over recent years, would abandon their allegedly moderate leader and turn to extremists such as neo-Bolshevik Viktor Anpilov. The truth is that the KPRF has not been preaching communism or socialism; it has been advancing the ideas of national socialism. The Makashov case illustrates yet again that the red-brown symbiosis -- about which many had been warning for years -- has become a dire reality. If a party advancing such an ideology came to power, it would bring about chaos, a chain of ethnic conflicts resembling those in former Yugoslavia (only, understandably, on a much larger scale), installation of dictatorial regimes throughout the former Soviet Union, and ultimately streams of refugees. --Translated by Victor Kalashnikov. That's a clear sign of FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Many investigators believe that there are Air Force Bases (AFB) around the country which have special units dealing with extraterrestrial intelligence and possibly the technology that has been recovered. After the famous Roswell crash the debris were loaded onto B-29 and shipped directly to a group of hangers in Wright-Patterson which were restricted only to a few personnel. Wright-Patterson has supposedly received other shipments of downed space craft. In 1948 a saucer is said to have crashed in Aztec, New Mexico and bodies were recovered. The openly-stated goal for the U.S. military is to "own the weather" [2] by year 2025 and to thereby be able to bring target populations to their knees by "storm enhancement," "storm modification," and being able to "induce drought." I'd say that reason stipulates that beyond (1) aliens and (2) mass hallucination, there's the most probable scenario: the flying objects overhead were military aircraft dropping the same cloud-seed-like debris being reported around the world. That scenario is indicated by this statement from a 1996 Department of Defense report "cleared for public release"[2]: "In the US, weather modification will likely become a part of national security policy with both domestic and international applications." Which indicates that secret (national security) cloud- seeding Ops could occur around the world, as it says, in support of multi-national and/or U.N. operations. I can't explain (1) how aliens could visit our rock, nor can I explain (2) how dozens of people in a town could all simultaneously have the same hallucination, but I can explain (3) how military aircraft can fly and drop cloud-seed material and how it is part of a secret weather-control Op. -Caveat Lector- The facts are that there are a whole variety of items on which Clinton is impeachable but all those in favor of removing him from office in DC CHOSE to focus on the sex issues. Could it be that in order to implicate Clinton in these other scandals would offer too much of an opportunity to expose the entire federal body for the corrupt parasite that it is? Ask yourself, "Why have a variety of items of high crime been cast aside in favor of his sex life and his attempt to maintain privacy in his sex life, whether he broke the law or did wrong - or not?" It's easy. It's a lot easier to get the public to pay attention when it involves such 'dirty' business. It followed the tradition of the three-headline crib note, with the best reserved for the small print: Clinton to Pledge $7 Billion for Missile Defense System But Decision to Build Is to Be Made in 2000 Setting aside money for "Star Wars," for practical and political reasons In all the talk about Clinton-hating among the fascist underworld of America, nobody ever mentions the anti-Kenneth Starr and pro-Clinton picket lines thrown up by the nutball supporters of Lyndon LaRouche. It has been, ever since Ronald Reagan's heyday, a prime demand of these fanatics that the United States commit itself to a "Star Wars" program. I would not demean myself by arguing that such deranged elements have now got their way, any more than I would lower my intellectual bar to present the president as a hapless victim of the Christian Coalition. Rather, the Clinton capitulation -- and its timing -- is part of the long-standing bipartisan agreement between the White House, the Republican House and Senate leadership and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. On Dec. 8, Daniel Ellsberg told a sun-drenched audience of Nation cruisers that he had good information about a forthcoming Clinton administration announcement on Star Wars, to be made in such a way as to protect Al Gore from any Republican charge of pacifism and appeasement in 2000. On Jan. 2, Clinton used his weekly radio address to proclaim an increase in military spending of $110 billion over the next six years, the largest such hike since the High Noon of the Reagan era. And then, on Jan. 6, came the final surrender to the most exorbitant demands of the Pentagon and the extreme right. This is the first time that any funds have been set aside to build, rather than test, a missile defense system. The target year of 2000 makes Ellsberg's point neatly, while the announcement date shows Clinton yet again raiding the public purse to finance his own last-ditch personal defense. Look again at the third deck of the New York Times headline above. What a laugh! There are, of course, no "practical" reasons to be throwing money at this fantasy project, on this or any other day. At least $55 billion has already been squandered on futile and spendthrift "tests," at what the paper demurely calls the "troubled" Theater High-Altitude Area Defense Program (THAAD). Troubled? These ridiculous experiments, whether with interceptor or short-range missiles, have all ended in ignominy. An official commission, chaired by former Air Force Gen. Larry Welch, has reported strongly about waste and about what one expert primly terms "lack of concept." One could go on. So much for the practical reasons. What of the "political" ones? I spoke to William Hartung, an arms-sales expert (and the author of the excellent "And Weapons For All") and a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute. "A good deal of this," he said, "is politically motivated." He goes on to explain: The Joint Chiefs in the fall decided to break with Clinton, since he was in a weakened state. At a September meeting at the War College, which was leaked, they told Clinton that his behavior with Monica Lewinsky would have gotten a military officer dismissed. They also gave him a shopping list of demands. He told them he'd accommodate them and boost the nearly $260 billion per year they already got. They got $9 billion more last October. Now, Clinton wants to give them another $110 billion over the next six years. Jonathan Dean, who represented the United States at the Mutual Balanced Force Reduction (MBFR) conference in Vienna between 1972 and 1981, told me: "I frankly think that the defense budget would have been lower under George Bush -- assuming that there was a Democratic Congress. The Clinton administration is quite deliberately building up the idea of the 'rogue state,' and the rogue weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), as an easy way to justify the doctrine of fighting two regional wars while maintaining 'readiness.' Need a definition for Washington? Try institutional insanity. Consider this: The United States, the world's only remaining military superpower, is about to embark on a military buildup unmatched since the peak of the Reagan-era Cold War. President Clinton is preparing to propose a boost in the defense budget of $112 billion over six years -- on top of the already monstrous $265 billion of federal money spent annually on the military. The weapons procurement budget alone is scheduled to grow 50 percent in the next half decade. And the Congressional Republicans are set to demand an even greater jump in military spending. What's happened, you might ask: Was there a coup in Russia? Has the Cold War resumed? Uh, no. It is not the Empire that's struck again, itUs the military-industrial complex. During the Clinton presidency, the U.S. defense industry -- with encouragement and subsidies from the Pentagon -- has undergone an ear-splitting consolidation that has left but three major contractors: Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon. Today's Lockheed Martin is the product of the merger of Lockheed, Martin Marietta, Loral and parts of General Dynamics. Boeing leaped to the top tier of the contractor pack with its acquisition of McDonnell Douglas. Raytheon gobbled up Hughes. With manufacturing facilities spread across the United States, these three companies now have enormous political influence -- they can promise that new military contracts will mean jobs in the districts of hundreds of members of Congress, and in nearly every state. They supplement this structural power with huge campaign contributions -- more than $8.5 million in the 1997-1998 electoral cycle, according to the Center for Responsive politics -- and even bigger lobbying investments -- nearly $50 million in 1997 alone, according to the Center. To complete the package, the industry invests in a variety of hawkish policy institutes and front groups, all of which churn reports, issue alerts, factsheets, congressional testimony and op-eds on the critical need for more, and more, and more defense spending. Combined with the powerful lobby from the Pentagon and its chicken-little worries about shortcomings in U.S. military "readiness" and the ability of the United States to fight two major wars simultaneously, the defense contractors have successfully positioned themselves to reap the benefits of a new explosion in military spending. As William Hartung of the World Policy Institute notes in a new report, "Military Industrial Complex Revisited," nothing indicates the power of the contractor lobby more than its ability to extract more money from Congress for weapons purchases than the Pentagon itself has requested. Hartung highlights the example of the C-130 transport plane, which is made by Lockheed Martin just outside of the congressional district of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. In the last 20 years, the U.S. Air Force has asked for five C-130s, but Congress has funded 256. "This ratio of 50 planes purchased for every one requested by the Pentagon may well be a record in the annals of pork barrel politics," Hartung writes. The C-130s go for about $75 million a piece. Even more remarkable, perhaps, is the "Star Wars" program. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the program's original mission no longer exists. Although the Pentagon has poured $55 billion into the program in a decade and a half, as Hartung notes, it has been a miserable failure in technical terms. Undeterred, the Congressional leadership added an extra $1 billion in Star Wars funding in the 1999 federal budget. Chalk up another victory for Lockheed and Boeing. But nothing compares to bonanza that the defense sector is about to reap. Without even the bogeyman of a perceived Soviet threat and in a time of rigid adherence to budget austerity, the weapons makers and their allies are about to usher in a new era of military profligacy and industrial waste. With the U.S. infrastructure crumbling, its Medicare system imperiled, child poverty at unconscionable levels in a time of unparalleled economic expansion and global warming threatening the well-being of the entire planet, a remotely sensible version of "national security" would prioritize these concerns over maintaining the military budget at current levels, let alone increasing it. Unfortunately, the lobbies for public works, the sick and aged, the poor and the environment cannot match the influence of the weapons makers. Their urgings that the federal government invest to address real problems that trouble the entire society, or at least large segments of it, are dismissed as "unreasonable." In Washington, where things are upside down, it is the madmen in the Pentagon and at Lockheed Martin who are considered reasonable. [CTRL] Ruff At His Best?
I just finished watching the opening defense arguments by White House Counsel Charles Ruff. All I can say is if Ruff were my lawyer Id be shaking in my boots now. I dont think Clinton will be removed from office so, he need not worry too much about his defense. It is disappointing though that a stronger case (at least so far) hasnt been made in Clintons defense. On the other hand, its becoming abundantly clear (IMHO) that the Senators are pretty much siding along party lines and if the voting is similar Clinton will stay in office. I found the first segment of Mr. Ruffs argument disjointed and confusing. I was in and out of the room for the first 15 minutes so, I did miss how he was going to outline his presentation. I know that an overview requires touching down on many points but, there didnt seem to be a concurrent thread and it was hard to establish his overall strategy. Im sure part of this confusion was in the fact that I did not see the first part of his speech. For the most part, I found Ruffs arguments weak. I will highlight a few things. Of necessity, defense counsel needs to address each and every arrow shot at Clinton during by the prosecution. Thats standard and I expected the litany of charges and side comments to be addressed. Im not going to go over all of this - its just too many details and Id be writing till next year if I did. There was an argument to separate the man from the presidency with the idea that you can condemn the behavior of the man and still keep the presidency intact. This is actually a pretty good argument in that it gives everyone a back door. So, Ruff definitely gets a golden star for this one. Ruff disputed the position that if judges were impeached for perjury than so should the President by stating that the presidency is very different from the position of a judge. He backed this up with 3 explanations: 1) there is only one president; 2) judges are in office for life where as an election every four years will automatically clean house of any corrupt President and 3) that as there is only one president removing him from office will negatively impact society whereas you can remove any number of judges (there being so many of them) without negatively impacting society. I agree with all of these statements however, they are not germane to the case. Ruff stated that the phrase High Crimes and Misdemeanors as applied to impeachment is not vague and in fact is clearly defined. He never did provide that definition though he did state that perjury and obstruction of justice is not part of the definition. Good attempt but, it didnt get by me! Ruff stated that perjury in the Paula Jones case was already voted down by the house as a reason to impeach. I didnt follow the House rulings. If it was decided that the Senate would not follow up on this and if the Senate agreed not to follow up on this issue then it was inappropriate for the prosecution to go into this area. I dont know the rulings and decision on this matter. Ruff asserted that this is an issue of perjury on a private matter (more separation of man from the presidency) and that a removal from office is not a proper response. I take the position that perjury under oath before a Grand Jury is not a private matter. So, I see it differently from our good Mr. Ruff. Mr. Ruff suggested that determination be raise to Beyond a reasonable doubt. This is a good strategy. Another point for Mr. Ruff. Mr. Ruff did address an interesting technical point in terms a having a fair due process. He felt that the articles were a summary rather than a detailed accounting. Without a detailed accounting Clinton wouldnt be properly informed of what he was being charged with and therefore that charges should be dropped. Now, Im not a lawyer but, I didnt have any problems understanding the articles of impeachment. He also stated that the charges were listed as multiple offenses which lead to duplicity ( I think he said duplicity but, for some reason I understood repetition - its a point Im not clear on). If Ruff is proposing that because there were too many charges (reasons) for impeachment and that these charges were listed more than once I dont feel this a valid reason to drop the charges. Thats like say, because he shot 10 people instead of just one, the charges should be dropped. I do agree that the insertion of the phrase one or more is vague and that this could and probably should have read more accurately. Basically, this is an argument of due process with the understanding that the phrasing of the articles left Clinton possibly in doubt of why he is being impeached. Good try, but I dont doubt Clinton is able to follow the ball on this one. Ruff did bring up a good point about his testimony. The prosecution stated the Ruff was evasive (Im not remembering the actual phrasing here) when asked if Clinton had told the truth. Ruff read from the record, He surely did. This is

Dyson * This book offers a cogent analysis of U.S. foreign and domestic policy since the beginning of the 20th century. In it Nancy Snow takes us on an armchair tour through the headquarters of the United States Information Agency. She begins by introducing us to the work of its foreign branch. Coined as "public diplomacy" its real function is worldwide dissemination of propaganda designed for the purposes of influencing the actions of human beings in ways that are compatible with American corporate interests. Its origins are traced back to the Creel Commission, set up by President Wilson prior to World War I, as part of the national strategy to gain popular support for U.S. entry into that war. Apart from carefully crafted speeches made at home and abroad, distribution of pamphlets and publications, poster displays and advertisements in newspapers, the Hollywood film industry was enlisted, with the help of legendary directors such as Cecil B. DeMille, to rally anti-German support. As a result, American journalist George Creel and his committee members successfully launched the beginning of merged business and government interests. Snow's critique of the continuing corporate domination of the USIA is based on firsthand experience in the Pentagon in the early 1990s--both as a federal government sponsored graduate student on a Fulbright Scholarship and then as the holder of a freshly minted Ph.D. in international relations--when she was hired to conduct cultural programs for the purpose of increasing mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and people of other countries. We are guided through dealmaking for the North American Free Trade Agreement. Described as "trilateral education" between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, USIA input was designed to foster harmonization of "values" between educational and cultural as well as economic dimensions. In the beginning, scholarships within universities proliferated with the objective of educating what became known as "the NAFTA generation." In the process, the Agency's early ideals for mutual understanding between peoples of all countries took a back seat to support and endorsement for U.S. led economic and cultural dominance in the global economy. The shift away from a policy of containment to a policy of free markets began with Ronald Reagan in 1982. Under the Clinton administration, the USIA undertook a new post-cold war propaganda emphasis on democracy and free markets with the shift accelerating in the absence of any limits. Fusion of foreign policy objectives between commerce, culture, and U.S. national security meant that it became increasingly necessary to justify educational and cultural exchanges by linking their success to American business and economic development goals. Snow's own preferences for cultural democracy over economic priorities and national security objectives ultimately led to rejection of this particular career path within the federal bureaucracy in favour of education and activism based on a critique of corporate based diplomacy. The USIA's target audience, explains Snow, is upper class business and professional elites who are often themselves agents of the propaganda system. The American majority, or remaining 80-90 percent, assume the role of "the bewildered herd." They are expected to go with the flow and not trouble themselves with political and economic decisionmaking. Compliance of the herd is achieved because it forms the target audience of the commercial mass media through tabloid news, professional sports, and popular television. International outreach is achieved through broadcasting such as Voice of America, Worldnet, the USIA Advisory Board for Cuba Broadcasting, Radio Free Asia, cultural exchange programs, and the U.S.'s most popular exports--Hollywood movies and the myth that the U.S. economy is a model for how other market economies, both developed and less developed, can successfully adapt to the global marketplace. With the passage of NAFTA in 1993 the USIA emphasis on trade and economics as its primary mission has led to a focus on the use of communications technologies for new synergies between public diplomacy and trade promotion. American business interests abroad are now the paramount objectives. It inspired many newsgroup discussions that year, this one called: The way to shield a criminal is to run his accomplice against him. One very brief news item appeared on CNN that Spring. A group (now known to be a university group) had been monitoring the Mena operations and gave reporters a tour of their findings. Many of us within the progressive community have been seriously burdened by the knowledge of Clinton's dubious past, connections, and complicity during the years of Reagan and Bush. One such person is Sam Smith of Progressive Review who is also long time Jerry Brown supporter. When Jerry suggested that the "Soul of the Democratic Party" was at stake, we did not believe that it was just a gimmick phrase. "Mine will be the most ethical administration in the history of the republic!" President-Elect Bill Clinton, November 1992. Now there is substantial press information concerning Mena and CIA drug operations -- as well as accusations of deliberate governmental and media censorship -- yet no effective investigations or hearings have materialised as of yet (Bill Clinton's Skeleton Closet claims direct Whitehouse attempt to censor its link from Netizen and successful censorship of Hotwired). The Government has continued to stand by its claims that NO government officials were EVER involved with drug trafficking. This claim of no complicity in the Iran-Contra scandal currently recieved disreputability with the release of the Inspector General's Volume II of declassified CIA documents and the release of Gary Webb's book Dark Alliance. Robert Parry responds to Volume I of the Inspector General's report June 1998 -- which was realeased many month before Volume II. We cannot completely verify Clinton's involvement in Mena. We can, though, due to the enormity of the operation and the dozens of suspecious deaths, question why his administration has done nothing to stop these operations and why has drug policies not changed substantially. Some journalists have suggested that these operations have moved further north to more obscure places in Montana and that since NAFTA that the northern cartels are just driving drugs across the border in tanker trucks where U.S. Customs waves through with CIA assistance. According to Michael Ruppert, John Carman, a former CIA Senior Inspector in San Diego, has a lot on this but he has no web site yet. Other documents indicate that our involvement in Afghanistan (one of the largest producers of opium in the world) stem from control of its opium trade. Historically, writers such as Alexander Cockburn suggest that the struggle for global control of the drug trade is at least as old as the Opium Wars. Others conclude drugs were a major reason for our Vietnam War -- in Southeast Asia -- and the main impediment to resolving the POW-MIA predicament. First of all, he made a point of standing up every 30 minutes, ostensibly to stretch his bad back, but I believe to draw attention to himself. Each time he did so -- apparently, for C-SPAN soon began muting his microphone for television -- he would repeat his earlier quip in that same, eerie old woman's voice: "Fasten your seatbelts gentlemen, it's going to be a bumpy ride!" At first there was scattered tittering, but soon the line became tired even to those for whom it had originally been the greatest source of amusement. Several Senators became noticeably agitated whenever the Chief Justice showed signs of stirring, the whole event turning into an ordeal of terror for them. Toward the end of the day, evidently overcome with ennui, Justice Renquist saw fit to remove a pocket comb and, holding up the first inch or so of its teeth beneath his nose, he turned, first this way and then that, giving the Nazi salute to the assembly. It was without doubt the most remarkable spectacle I have ever seen, and the sheer mortification and panic it engendered among all present, from the politicians to the C-SPAN remote camera operator, gave that august body of elder statesmen all the appearance of the pandemonium at a carnival freak show. I suppose that this was all perfectly predictable. I should mention that Biff Spiceland (yes, his real name), the CNN weatherman, is an old and dear friend of mine. He sent me an email letter three or four months back, excitedly remarking that he had just seen the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, William H. Renquist, eating a sandwich in the restaurant of a local Washington hotel. I have never been much for celebrity gossip and paid little attention, though there was one troubling detail which disturbed me briefly. Spiceland went over to Renquist's table to introduce himself and to meet the Chief Justice. Renquist, he related, was busily engaged in some sort of complicated transposition of his sandwich ingredients on his plate, and evidently not satisfied with his attempts, for he kept shaking his head and rearranging them again. He introduced himself, to which Renquist gave cursory and noncommital acknowledgment without looking up and continued his strange behavior. Overcome by curiosity, Biff asked him what he was doing. "I'm segregating. This sandwich is against the laws of man and God, and the Constitution does not authorize the contrary meddlings of federal bureaucrats." Spiceland was speechless. Suddenly Renquist looked up, as if noticing him for the first time. "By gad sir, who are you and what do you want?" Spiceland quickly excused himself and left the restaurant, embarrassed and a little frightened. I told him that he should sell his story to the Washington Post, but he declined, saying that he feared for his job. Decision, which requires the evaluation of alternatives, drives man to individualism, self-reliance and rationalism, all hateful qualities to Germanism. Page 413 They wanted a cozy society which would so absorb the individual in its structure that he would never need to make significant decisions for himself. Held within a framework of known, satisfying personal relationships, such an individual would be safe because he would be surrounded by fellows equally satisfied with their own positions, each feeling important from his membership in the greater whole. Page 414 The German abhors the need to make decisions. He feels it necessary to proclaim his position by verbal loudness which may seem boastful to outsiders. Page 415 Germans are ill-at-ease with equality, democracy, individualism, freedom, and other features of modern life. Their neurological systems were a consequence of the coziness of German childhood, which, contrary to popular impression, was not a condition of misery and personal cruelty (as it often is in England) but a warm, affectionate and externally disciplined situation of secure relationships. The Englishman is disciplined from within so that he takes his self-discipline, embedded in his neurological system, with him wherever he goes. The Englishman is the most socialized of Europeans, as the Frenchman is the most civilized, the Italian most completely gregarious, or the Spaniard most completely individualistic. But the German, by seeking external discipline, shows his unconscious desire to recapture the externally disciplined world of his childhood. With such discipline he may be the best behaved of citizens, but without it, he may be a beast. He sees no need to make any effort to see anything from any point of view other than his own. The consequence is a most damaging inability to do this. His union, his neighborhood are the best and all others may be denigrated. His myopic or narrow-angled vision of the universe must be universalized. Page 417 The precarious structure left by Bismarck was not managed but merely hidden from public view by a facade of nationalistic, anti foreign, anti-Semitic, imperialistic, and chauvinistic propaganda of which the emperor was the center. The monarchy represented the body, which was supported by four legs: the army, the landlords, the bureaucracy and the industrialists. The revolution of 1918 was not really a revolution at all because it removed the monarchy but it left the quartet of legs. Page 426 The German inflation, which was a great benefit to the Quartet, destroyed the economic position of the middle classes and lower middle classes and permanently alienated them from the republic. Page 427 The Nationalist Party built up a pervasive propaganda campaign to show that all Germany's problems were caused by the democratic and laboring groups, by the internationalists, and by the Jews. Page 428 The Centre and Left shared this nationalistic poison sufficiently to abstain from any effort to give the German people the true story of Germany's responsibility for the war and for her own hardships. Thus the Right was able to spread its own story of the war, that Germany had been overcome by a "stab in the back" from "the three Internationals": the "Gold" International of the Jews, the "Red" International of the Socialists, and the "Black" International of the Catholics, an unholy triple alliance which was symbolized in the gold, red, and black flag of the Weimar Republic. If that happens, cable operators would be forced to eliminate many cable programming services, including C-SPAN and C-SPAN2, in order to make room for each broadcast station's extra channel. Broadcasters would be given the extra cable channel as part of the plan for the nation's transition from current television technology to the new "digital" television, which includes the promise of the much talked about High Definition Television, or HDTV. C-SPAN believes the proposal for a second channel is both unnecessary and unconstitutional. -Caveat Lector- SEER FORESEES SERIOUS SIGHTS (CNNS, 01/19/99) -- The seer assembly line continues to churn out prophecies of various types. This news service is reluctant to pass along the latest mumbo-jumbo, this time from Gordon-Michael Scallion; on the other hand, by documenting the latest from the current crop of seers their predictions can later be evaluated. Today, the reigning Rasputin, Gordon-Michael Scallion, appeared on the Roseanne show, on the NBC network. CNNS took notes and will, for historical purposes, relay Scallion's predictions below. This is done in the hope that any fake seers in the assembly line of seers can be more easily dethroned, by showing how they are frequently wrong. A note on the Roseanne show: she seems like a nice lady, but is caught up in the Hollywood mileau. Roseanne says she's been studying the Kabbala, which is the latest fashion in Tinsel Town. Roseanne alluded to her hope that the women are taking over. Not known is what portion of her viewership is women, but presumably that viewership is primarily members of the fair sex. Mr. America: while you are out there busting your ass, your wife is being propagandized by afternoon talk shows. Roseanne's show had footnotes on various Scallion predictions later proven correct but did not have mention of Scallion misses. In a past issue of Conspiracy Nation [CN 12.20], released during the summer of 1998, we recorded Scallion's then-predictions, for example the following gem: ** "I'm quite certain we're going to see major, MAJOR quakes -- greater than 7.0 -- in the United States this summer [1998.]" -- Gordon-Michael Scallion: w-r-o-n-g. Today, Scallion prognosticated as follows: ** Scallion's "Future Map Of The United States" was shown. He predicts there will be "earth changes," and that western and eastern portions of the U.S. will be submerged. Previously, Scallion's map had a time frame of 1998-2001 for the earth changes. Now, that time frame has been expanded to 1998-2012. Is business booming for Mr. Scallion? "Profits of doom?" ** The United Kingdom, France, Holland, and northern Europe will be submerged, predicts Scallion. It's not known whether this includes Finland. ** We think of earthquakes of magnitude 8 or so; "start thinking of quakes of magnitude 10, 12, or 15," says the Cagliostro of Catastrophe. ** "We haven't been able to get together collectively, to solve [environmental problems] so nature is going to take over and will do it for us [i.e. solve environmental problems.]" An increase in "erratic weather" is predicted. The year 1999, says Scallion, will be an "8" on a 1-to-10 scale of weather severity. ** On the Y2K problem, Scallion says it's a real problem but not too major in the First World. On a scale of 1-to-10, he rates it a "3" in severity. The Third World, however, will be much more affected by Y2K, according to the balding, goateed guide to the future. ** The economy will accelerate in 1999, he says, but at some point there will be a "major correction," on the level of the 1929 stock market crash. ** Pope John Paul II will die this year, foresees the far-sighted futurist, and he will basically be the last Pope. The next Pope will be "olive skinned," probably an Italian, but will rule as part of a tribunal. ** By about the year 2002, we will be able to look back and distinguish that 1999 was the tenuous beginning of World War III. This world war, says Scallion, will be a European war and will not spread to the United States. It will begin with Turkey, Yugoslavia, and Italy and will be "basically a religious war, an attempt for global domination." At least one of the religions involved will be a new religion, unknown or unperceived at present. In the purportedly imminent World War III, both biological and nuclear weapons will be used. ** According to Scallion, the current impeachment trial of Bill Clinton is the start of a major phase of change in the U.S. political structure. We are, says the Nineties Nostradamus, going back to "13 colonies," which implies a major de-centralization of government. ** We are going to turn blue, to an extent, but this will not homogenize the races; rather, the races will have blue tints. Our DNA is about to be significantly altered and we will take a "quantum leap" as a species. Our dreams will become more lucid and Scallion urges we pay more attention to our dreams. Sherman Skolnick, chairman of the public interest research group, Citizens' Committee To Clean Up The Courts, has many files in his office. One file is named by him, "Profits of Doom." Om K --[2]-- WEALTH AND POWER The conscious pursuit of obscurity by many members of the corporate rich has rendered them practically invisible to the public at large. Nevertheless, they continue to exercise a pervasive and significant influence in American politics. The power inherent in great wealth is especially evident in the arena of campaign financing. As early as 1937, Ferdinand Lundberg documented that individuals from wealthy capitalist families were regular and substantial contributors to the campaigns of presidential candidates. He also confirmed that the bulk of these contributions went to the candidates of the Republican party. This financial bond between presidential candidates and wealthy campaign contributors has remained virtually unchanged for several decades. According to Herbert E. Alexander, a prominent scholar of campaign financing, the members of just twelve wealthy families contributed at least $3.6 million to the presidential campaign of 1972. Of course, most of these funds went to the Republican party. Indeed, the disclosure of illegal contributions during that campaign eventually forced Congress to pass a series of campaign- financing reforms in 1974. Although these reforms limit the amount of money that individuals can contribute directly to a candidate for federal office, they still permit individuals to contribute to a number of political action committees, even if they all endorse the same candidate. Moreover, individuals are allowed to spend an unlimited amount of money on independent advertisements and commercials. Despite the intent of recent campaign- financing reforms, then, the members of the corporate rich are still a major source of political campaign contributions. The power of wealth is all too obvious whenever the scion of a wealthy capitalist family seeks elected office. Political campaigns at both the state and the national levels have become so expensive that the rich possess an often decisive advantage over their less affluent opponents. Recent campaign-financing reforms did not place any lim-its on the amount of money that candidates can spend on their own campaigns. Senator John C. Danforth of Missouri, a member of the family that founded Ralston Purina Company, and Senator Henry J. Heinz III of Pennsylvania, a great-grandson of the original H. J. Heinz, were both able to rely on their own financial resources during their initial campaigns. In many cases, the scions of wealthy families who enter electoral politics also benefit from the immediate name recognition accorded their family. This combination of personal wealth and name recognition enabled three members of one corporate rich family, two brothers and their nephew, to win gubernatorial campaigns in three different states: Nelson Rockefeller in New York, Winthrop Rockefeller in Arkansas, and John D. Rockefeller IV in West Virginia. The voters were unlikely to forget a candidate named Rockefeller. It did not matter to them that much of this name recogni-tion was probably attributable to the stigma once associated with that name. Although the scions of wealthy capitalist families usually win their elections, there are exceptions. For example, Mark Dayton, the great-grandson of the founder of Dayton Hudson, was defeated in his recent bid for the Senate. However, his defeat was probably the result of his somewhat radical views, which alienated even some members of his own family. Money cannot always buy high office, but it is rarely a serious hindrance. Wealthy capitalist families also exert a powerful influence on American society in less direct and more subtle ways. They are, of course, directly involved in the economic activities of the nation as a result of their position as principal stockholders in many major corporations. Members of corporate rich families often serve as officers and directors of these corporations. Consequently, these families often exercise effective control over some of the largest and most powerful corporations in the world. Through these corporations, they are able to influence policies, at both the local and the national levels, that affect their economic interests. Members of the corporate rich often exert a great deal of influence at the local level, even in large cities. For example, Henry Ford 11, as chairman of Ford Motor Company, was instrumental in the development of the huge Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. Indeed, he saw to it that Ford Motor Company became one of the earliest and largest investors in this development. The political process operates in much the same way at the national level. During that same period, for example, Henry Ford II organized a national campaign against the passage of stringent federal automobile safety and pollution standards. In order to get media

Om K --[1]-- The Corporate Rich The United States is a very wealthy nation, but much of its wealth is owned by a small minority of its citizens. According to the best estimates, less than I percent of the population owns roughly a quarter of all the personal wealth in the country, including half of the stocks and bonds owned by individuals. Furthermore, a large proportion of this wealth is owned by the members of a few hundred families. By and large, the members of these families are multimillionaires. Some of the richest, such as David Rockefeller and Henry Ford II, are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A select few, like Gordon Getty or Paul Mellon, are even billionaires. Most of the rest, however, are worth somewhat less. In particular, many of the younger members of these families are currently worth only a few million dollars apiece. Although most of these individuals are not fabulously rich, their families are extremely wealthy. As a group, they comprise what Ferdinand Lundberg once labeled "the rich and the super-rich." Although many American families are relatively affluent, few are truly rich. Even among the affluent, the major asset of most families is usually the equity they have in their homes. The truly rich have equity in their homes, of course, but they also have substantial investments in stocks, bonds, and commercial real estate as well. These investments alone are usually sufficient to provide them with generous incomes. Indeed, the fundamental distinction between the truly rich and the merely affluent is that the rich receive enough income from their investments to be able to live out their lives in comparative luxury without the necessity of ever seeking gainful employment. Much of the wealth owned by the richest families in America is corporate wealth. In fact, almost all of the really big fortunes in America were derived, at least initially, from the ownership of corporate stock of one kind or another. Indeed, most wealthy families owe the bulk of their fortunes to their original stockholdings in a single corporation. Large corporations often begin as small firms, owned and managed by the members of their founding families. As these firms grow into large corporations, the corporate stock owned by these founding families sometimes appreciates greatly in value. The corporate rich, then, consist of the members of wealthy capitalist families who amassed large fortunes from their original stockholdings in a family corporation. Of course, not all new companies become large corporations. To the contrary, a majority of new businesses fail within a few years. But a few, through either good management or good fortune, succeed beyond all expectations. The founders of these firms and those who invested in them at the outset often become very wealthy. For example, William R. Hewlett and David Packard founded their own electronic instruments firm in 1939 with an initial cash investment of $538. Forty years later, their stock in HewlettPackard was worth over $3 billion. Although billionaires are few and far between, many successful entrepreneurs have become multimillionaires. On the basis of his own analysis of the very rich, C. Wright Mills, an ardent critic of corporate capitalism, was forced to conclude that the American economic system was successful "as a machine for producing millionaires." Despite the fact that they own a major share of all the personal wealth in the country, surprisingly little is known about the corporate rich in America. With only a few notable exceptions, they lead intensely private lives, which render them practically invisible. This lack of visibility is no mere accident. To the contrary, it is the result of a conscious strategy. In order to preserve their privacy, many wealthy individuals have chosen to lead lives of deliberate obscurity. They attempt to conceal their family ties and the extent of their wealth from everyone except other family members, close friends, and a few trusted business associates. With only a few exceptions, most of the members of the richest families in America are entirely unknown to the public at large. For example, as the result of the publicity generated by recent legal battles, Gordon Getty has become widely known as a billionaire. However, his equally rich brother, J. Paul Getty, Jr., remains virtually unknown. The reasons for this conscious pursuit of privacy through obscurity are obvious enough. Anyone with a few million dollars to spare is fair game for those in search of money. To begin with, the corporate rich are natural targets for professional fund-raisers from both charitable causes and political campaigns. They also attract unsolicited business propositions from wandering legions of hapless inventors and speculators. Last but certainly not

When the majority are rewarded for not producing, the ratio of production to consumption must be ruthlessly regulated lest consumption exceeds production and this ungodly, unconstitutional, Marxist system collapses. There is no better way to enhance this ratio than to eliminate non productive consumers such as babies, retirees and cripples. Cancer and taxation do the same thing for government when all we have in the bank is numbers. While the tax ILLUSION just reduces consumption, cancer eliminates consumers. Lawyers, judges, journalists and their families are dying of cancer while they defend this system of unjust weights that is forbidden by God in De.25:13-15. Hoffman, author of ``The Oklahoma City Bombing and The Politics of Terror,'' had said last week that he was indicted for sending copies of his book and ``inspirational notes'' to jurors during their investigation. Hoffman, who runs an alternative San Francisco-based newspaper, the Haight-Ashbury Free Press, has said grand jury members complained about being coerced. He said he didn't try to contact jurors directly. He also said he didn't remember precisely what he said in the notes. The grand jury met for 18 months. In its final report last month, it dismissed one after another of the theories that have been put forth about a larger conspiracy or a government coverup. Hoffman's book makes just such allegations. ``We can state with assurance that we do not believe that the federal government had prior knowledge that this horrible terrorist attack was going to happen,'' grand jurors wrote. One region in particular that appears to be emerging as an epicenter for unrest is Hunan province, hit not only by layoffs but also by flooding and official corruption. Hunan has seen a series of demonstrations in recent weeks, including a violent one on January 8 that reportedly involved some 5,000 farmers. Hunan is also home to political and labor activists, several of whom have been targeted in Beijing's recent crackdown on dissent. On January 17, a bomb exploded on a bus in the Hunan capital, Changsha, injuring 37. With social unrest now turning to violence, a cadre of activists, and only harder times in sight, Hunan could soon pose a serious challenge to stability in China as a whole. We expect Beijing knows this and will respond accordingly. Analysis: According to reports from China's Xinhua news agency and multiple sources outside China, a bomb exploded on a bus on the evening of January 17 in Changsha, capital of the central Chinese province of Hunan. The blast reportedly injured at least 37 of the 60 people on board, four of them seriously, although Chinese officials deny a report in the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao that 11 people were killed in the blast. There is no report of whether any passersby were injured by the explosion, which occurred at 7:40pm on Wuyi Avenue, a busy shopping street. According to an eyewitness cited by Xinhua, a man of about 30 put a lit cigarette in a large sack he had brought on the bus immediately before exiting the bus. Moments later the sack exploded. Said the witness, "The young man looked like a farmer who was in the city looking for temporary work. He was dressed in tatty clothing and was generally scruffy." Local police investigating the bombing reportedly did not confirm the witness's account, but according to the BBC, investigators did find traces of sulfur and nitrogen on the bus and confirm that the explosion was caused by a bomb. The Hong Kong based Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China calls Changsha "a disaster area for unemployment," and has reported sabotage attempts in the area last July and September. On January 8, some 5,000 farmers protesting government corruption and excessive taxes clashed with police in Daolin township, about 25 miles from Changsha. One farmer was reportedly killed when hit by a tear gas canister, and some 100 more were injured in the more than five hour clash. According to a local Chinese radio station employee interviewed by the New York Times, the demonstrations were sparked when local police attempted on January 8 to disband and arrest the officers of the Society for Reducing Taxes and Saving the Nation, a group founded last year by local farmers. The radio station employee claimed that 10,000 farmers were present at the peak of the demonstration, while the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China put the number at 3,000 and Chinese officials admit that 4,000 to 5,000 were involved. A second demonstration reportedly followed on January 9 but was quickly put down by 500 troops, while three other smaller protests related to the January 8 incident have reportedly occurred since then. On January 18, several hundred laid off workers, known as "xiagang," from the state-owned Changde textiles factory, roughly 100 miles northwest of Changsha, blocked a highway bridge for over an hour to protest not receiving wages for over three months. According to the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China, the demonstration caused a two mile long traffic jam. The Changde factory reportedly recently laid off some 3,000 of its 10,000 workers. Hundreds of laid off workers reportedly held similar demonstrations in Changsha on three occasions in November. China has seen widespread social unrest and demonstrations in the past year, as the Asian economic collapse and China's efforts to force inefficiencies out of its economy have left millions unemployed. China's xaigang pose an increasing threat to China's stability as their demonstrations are growing larger, more frequent, and more violent. Demonstrations have been widespread and frequent, and bombings have occurred elsewhere in China as well. An explosion at a bus stop last week in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, injured four. Two people died and six were injured in an explosion late Sunday afternoon in an apartment on a busy street in Guangzhou. Traces of explosives were reportedly found at the scene. Orlin Grabbe In February 1995, having heard some of the malicious rumors regarding Systematics (ALLTEL Information Services), I posted on the Internet a bibliography of news articles regarding Systematics, so that researchers could see for themselves that Systematics was just another hard-working software company that provided banking software. In that post I mentioned some of the rumors and stated: "Of course these allegations are FALSE. However, for those who may [be] interested in doing their own private research on SYSTEMATICS, and verifying for themselves the utter FALSEHOOD of these malicious lies, I have compiled a brief bibliography on the company." But now the heavy-handed tactics of ALLTEL Information Services (formerly Systematics) have made me reconsider. Could it be that at least some of the rumors are true? Why did ALLTEL Information Services, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, hire a lawyer way over in San Francisco to threaten journalists who chose to investigate these rumors? Charles O. Morgan claims that "Banking and financial institutions are clients of ALLTEL. The irresponsible and false statements . . . have and will cause my client substantial damage." Well, I assert that I know much more about the banking environment than does Charles O. Morgan. And I assert that what Charles O. Morgan claims is nonsense. The banking environment is a communication-based environ- ment, where rumors about companies spread quickly and die quickly. Banking people are up to their necks in rumors. Given the environment, they have to take rumors with a grain of salt until they have hopped on the phone and spoken with six colleagues who can help them evaluate the purported facts. ALLTEL Information Services has nothing to fear from a bunch of pissant rumors that are false. But if ALLTEL Information Services has nothing to fear, then WHY HAVE THEY REPORTEDLY HIRED A NEW YORK-BASED PRIVATE INVESTIGATIVE FIRM CALLED *PROUST AND KILLMAN* TO MONITOR THEIR CRITICS? If ALLTEL Information Services were to choose to engage in cheap thuggery, then SUCH ACTIONS MIGHT CALL FORTH AN ARCHIVE OF DOCUMENTS THAT COULD BURY ALLTELL INFORMATION SERVICES IN DEEP SHIT WELL INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. Of course, such an archive probably doesn't exist. But ALLTEL Information Services can't be too sure of this. As for myself, I personally could care less what it is that ALLTEL Information Services didn't do. I just want them to stop not doing it. The Systematics bibliography is repeated below. The U.N. Security Council met in an emergency session on Monday over yet another "Kosovo crisis." The NATO supreme commander, Gen. Wesley Clark, is expected on Tuesday (Jan. 20) to read a riot act to the Serbian President in Belgrade. Just as the outrageous bombing of Iraq in mid-December was intended to distract the American public's attention from the impeachment proceeding in the House (see "Klinton's Amerika: Israel's Tomahak,' www.truthinmedia.org/Bulletins/tim98-12-7.html ), so is this weekend's alleged "Serb massacre" in which 45 people died designed to "outrage the world" If the latter "foreign policy" tactics weren't so tragic, they'd be downright comical. For, even the densest of the dense defensive players, no matter what the sport, would not fall for the same fake seven times in a row. Yet the Clinton administration is evidently assuming that an average American is even more dense than the densest of the dense defensive players. What arrogance! What gall! The latest Clinton Kosovo move was a predictable as night and day. Here's an excerpt, for example, from a message which a TiM reader Mladen Vranjicanin, a former US Navy officer, sent to us on Jan. 16 - IN ADVANCE - of the actual Kosovo events: "Third, as if by coincidence (if anyone would still believe the President), lo and behold there is another Kosovo massacre (one more the Serbs have nothing to gain by). Deputy Security Advisor David LEVY has already briefed the White House on possible course of action, and his boss Sandy BERGER, and defense Secretary William COHEN, and State Department boss, Madeleine ALBRIGHT, are likely to urge the President to wag another dog war for the duration of one week, while the Senate deliberates whether he should be removed from office (very unlikely if the troops are in harm's way, since a military action historically also raises presidential popularity a few notches)." And now, here's what actually happened "Witnesses allege the attackers wore both police and army uniforms and wore Balaclava helmets (knitted face-mask caps) to mask their identities " (an excerpt from a report by Ben Works, a Vietnam veteran). "One thing that stands out as highly suspicious in this entire story of masked men is why would these people even bother wearing masks but not covering up their uniforms! I mean if you want to conceal your identity, you would do it from head to toe. But, to the gullible public who can be fed just about anything this Administration decides to serve, outrage has been a major propellant of American foreign policy " (an excerpt from another message by Mr. Vranjicanin, formerly US Navy). "Villagers said armed Serbs wearing black masks had burst into their houses on Friday, seized the men from their families and led them toward the police station. Then they had turned and herded them up the hill to kill them, the villagers reported " (an excerpt from a London Times report). Now, allow us to let you in on a little secret. The first two quotes date back to September 1998, the last time around a "Serb massacre" in Drenica, Kosovo, Serbia, was committed by men in black so as to justify the then threat of NATO bombing (see "Kosovo: Framing the Serbs, Acts IV, V, VI... and Counting," TiM GW Bulletin, 98/10-1, 10/02/98). The preceding paragraph, however, is a quote from this Sunday's (1/17/99) edition of the London Times. It refers to this weekend's killing of 45 Albanian civilians in Racak, Kosovo, Serbia. Which, of course, doesn't prove anything. The Milosevic troops certainly could have committed such a crime - on orders from high up (all the way to Washington?). The only opposition we encountered was from the Arcata Chamber of Commerce (which did not organize against us), and from the Times-Standard, the local corporate daily owned by MediaNews Group Corporation, the seventh largest newspaper owning corporation in the country, based in Colorado. With a steering committee of six dedicated individuals, only one of whom had ever worked on an initiative campaign, we tackled task -after task with gusto. We placed over 100 yard signs across the community. We hung leaflets on thousands of doorknobs. We brought Richard Grossman (Co-Director of The Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy) and Dan Hamburg (Green Party candidate for governor of California) to speak at a major forum entitled "Reckoning With the Corporate Attack on Democracy." We tabled, leafleted, bannered, fundraised, and too much more even to think about. (We're all very exhausted!) Now the real work begins: launching a city-wide democratic conversation on the proper role of corporations in our society and our community. Given our rights as We The People of Arcata, and our responsibilities to protect our community from harms caused by our corporate creations, how well have we been doing? What would self-governance look like if giant corporations no longer participated in our political and cultural institutions? Did previous generations of Arcatans struggle to keep corporations subordinate to citizens? We intend to engage the entire city in this discussion. I believe that the drug trade is not only the "historical origin" of these families, but that it persists to this day. That is the main focus of some of us who have been on this list for the longest time. And we don't talk idly; we actually research our theories because we want to know the truth. I do support Clinton most of the time. I've been a Democrat all my life, and I believe in equal opportunity. I am against a society based on exclusion and perpetuation and preservation of elites. I am a suspicious person--one who spends every waking hour of every day trying to figure out what is really going on--reading between the lines. Through reading and researching, I have begun to question, not only who is behind the Clinton attacks, but who set Nixon up. If you've read SILENT COUP, by Colodny, you know there is evidence to indicate That the burglary was botched in an attempt to bring Nixon down. And there is a question about the Hinckley attempt to kill Reagan shortly after he took office, as well as the suspicious circumstances surrounding the downed plane Hausenflus was on that led to the discovery of Iran-Contra. I am tired of someone trying to remove our elected presidents of whatever party by covert operations. I can't say that Forbes is behind these attempted coups, but I have found that the persons involved in that magazine have been associated with activities which I find to be highly questionable up to the present day. I have separate research available which I have posted previously, which I could dig up if requested. (2) I'm not sure what the authors' premises were. I had the impression that they were glorifying the role of foreign capital in this country, in addition to capital investment that historically in this country came from primarily New York and Boston. If you read about the investment in railroads in the early 19th century, what you find is that a great many of the bonds were marketed in Europe by various investment bankers. Yet some of the railroads were also financed by Bostonians. How did they make the money to invest in these projects? Once they made the investments, how were the investments protected? Have you read BITTER FRUIT, by Stephen Schlesinger and Stephen Kinzer? (4) Are trade secrets inherently evil? Secrecy is inherently evil. I believe in openness. I believe every qualified person should have the same opportunity to participate in trade. I do not believe that people who earn their money through slavery and drug trafficking should be able to wash their profits through legitimate business by using the guise of "venture capital" investments and thereby gain control of strategic industrial development. That's what I believe has been done. The proof is hard to come by because the evil is hidden. But I'll spend the rest of my life trying to uncover the truth.
