From the July-August, 1996 issue (Vol. 3 No. 5)

The Probe Interview: Bob Tanenbaum

Robert K. Tanenbaum was chosen by Richard Sprague to be the House Select
Committee's first Deputy Counsel in charge of the John Kennedy murder
investigation. Last year he wrote a fictionalized account of that experience
entitled Corruption of Blood. The book was released as a mass market paperback
this year in a million copy print run, the first highly successful release in
the field since Case Closed. He was recently the keynote speaker at the 1995
COPA Conference in Washington.

Bob attained his law degree at UC Berkeley's distinguished Boalt Hall in
1968. In New York he served under legendary DA Frank Hogan where he rose to
Deputy Chief of the Homicide Bureau, garnering an unbeatable record: he never
lost a murder case.

Bob felt morally resigned to leave the HSCA after Sprague's forced departure.
He has stated, "at that time I had a three year old daughter. . .and I didn't
want her to read about American history that I knew to be absolutely false,
that her father may have participated in."

In Los Angeles, he has had a multi-faceted career. Although he is still in
private practice, he recently served as Mayor of Beverly Hills. He has also
written several books based on his legal career. Two of them were
non-fiction, The Piano Teacher and Badge of the Assassin. The latter became a
film starring James Woods and includes two detectives Tanenbaum used on the
HSCA: Cliff Fenton and L. J. Delsa. Bob has written six fictional books based
on his Butch Karp character, a New York City Assistant District Attorney. Bob
kindly granted Probe's Jim DiEugenio an interview at his home in Beverly
Hills, which he shares with his wife of 29 years and two children. The
following are only excerpts from a candid 85 minute talk that can be obtained
in the current catalog.

JD: In the book, you describe this meeting with a guy named Crane, who we
guess is probably Dick Sprague. Is that how it actually happened? Did Dick
Sprague call you to come down to Washington?

BT: Well, keep in mind the book is all fiction. But the way I went to
Washington was that Dick Sprague, who was then in private practice in
Philadelphia was named Chief Counsel and he asked me if I wanted to come down
as Deputy Chief and take over the Kennedy side of the investigation, because
the House Select Committee was investigating the assassinations of both
Martin Luther King and President Kennedy.

JD: So, how did you know Sprague?

BT: I didn't know him. I never knew him, I never met him, I never spoke to
him. I'd heard about him as a top-notch D.A. in Philadelphia. He was chief
assistant and he'd been in that office about seventeen years or so. And of
course he'd tried the Tony Boyle case, the United Mine Workers, so he was a
great D.A. and a terrific trial lawyer.

JD: If you take a look at the structure of the first phase of the House
Select Committee as opposed to what is generally considered to be the second
phase, when Blakey came in, you guys had a lot of first-class investigators,
attorneys, etc. and it really appeared for the first time that it was going
to be a real murder investigation.

BT: That's what we expected. That's the only reason we went down there. After
all, we were coming out of the homicide bureau of the New York County D.A.'s
office and we had tried scores and scores and scores of murder cases. And
Sprague was going down there for the same reason. When I met the committee
members that's what they said this was all about, before I said I was going
to go down there. So, that's what we expected. And if the evidence was that
Oswald did it and did it alone, we were going to say that. But if he didn't
and the evidence said he didn't, then we were going to say that. That is what
the committment was.

JD: Did you actually know much about the case before you got into it?

BT: No, I knew nothing about the case. I had read none of the books, I didn't
follow any of it, I had read all of the negative publicity about Garrison and
really had no understanding of what was going on other than the fact that the
Warren Commission had concluded that Oswald did it and did it alone.

JD: So, you really didn't have an opinion, one way or the other?

BT: I had no opinion.

JD: I interviewed a friend of yours down in New Orleans, L.J. Delsa. He said
that he felt that one of the reasons the Congress turned against the
Committee was, because of Sprague's approach. It could have set a precedent
in Washington to have really serious investigations instead of fact-finding
commissions. Did you get any feeling about that?

BT: In my opinion, Congress never wanted to go forward with these
investigations at all.

From the May-June, 1996 issue (Vol. 3 No. 4)

The Creation of the Warren Commission

By Donald Gibson

Most of the people who have done research on or are knowledgeable about the
performance of the so-called Warren Commission are convinced that a number of
its members and counsel played an important role in the post-assassination
cover-up. Those seriously interested in its work, including the author, are
convinced that the commission's oversights, distortions, and other
shortcomings represent something that is explainable only in terms of the
intentions of people such as Allen Dulles, John J. McCloy, J. Lee Rankin, and
Gerald Ford.

Although a massive amount of work has been done on the Commission's
performance, the story of how the Commission was created has remained
incomplete. This story needs to be completed because both reason and the
facts indicate that the formation of the Commission, like the performance of
elements of the FBI and the media, was as much a part of the cover-up process
as was its Report.

We can get closer to that complete story now because of the release in 1993
of the White House telephone transcripts for the period immediately following
the assassination. In combination with material already in the public domain,
those transcripts allow us to clearly identify the people who were directly
responsible for the establishment of the President's Commission on the
Assassination of President Kennedy, later dubbed the "Warren Commission."

These transcripts demonstrate that the people who have been "credited" with
the creation of the Commission had little to do with it-like LBJ's longtime
friend and advisor Abe Fortas-or were following the lead of others, as with
President Johnson and Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. The
transcripts show that the idea of a commission was pushed on LBJ by people
who were outside of the government at that time and that this effort began
within minutes of Lee Harvey Oswald's death. Until Oswald was dead, there was
no way that such an effort could be undertaken.

Blakey's Version

The first extensive and official description of the events leading to the
creation of the Warren Commission appears in the 1979 account from the Select
Committee on Assassinations of the House of Representatives. Two stories
emerge from their hearings. One is the Committee's description of the events;
the other is in the testimony of Nicholas Katzenbach, Deputy Attorney General
at the time of the assassination. The two accounts are not identical even
though the first is ostensibly dependent on the second.

The Select Committee's Report contains a section entitled "Creation of the
Warren Commission." It begins by saying that on November 22nd, "President
Johnson was immediately faced with the problem of investigating the
assassination." This is misleading. As long as Oswald was alive, there wasn't
any real question about the investigation; it would be conducted in Dallas
during a trial of Oswald. Second, as the evidence will show, President
Johnson "was faced" with a problem after Oswald was killed, not "immediately"
after the assassination. The problem for LBJ was not just one of
investigating the assassination. There was also a problem presented to him by
people trying to shape the investigatory process.

The Committee's rendition of events goes on to say that on November 23, 1963,
J. Edgar Hoover "forwarded the results of the FBI's preliminary investigation
to him [LBJ]. This report detailed the evidence that indicated Lee Harvey
Oswald's guilt." In fact, Hoover told LBJ on the morning of the 23rd that the
case against Oswald was not then very good. The Committee's account goes on
to say that on the 24th, Hoover called LBJ aide Walter Jenkins and said that
Katzenbach had told him that the President might appoint a commission. (As
the record will show, Katzenbach was not speaking for the President, who on
the 24th opposed the idea of a commission.) Hoover expressed his opposition
to the creation of a commission, suggesting that the FBI handle the
investigation and submit a report to the Attorney General. Hoover makes a
vague reference to problems a commission might cause for U.S. foreign
relations. He also mentions that he and Katzenbach are anxious to have
"something issued so we can convince the public that Oswald is the real
assassin."

The Committee's report then summarizes parts of Katzenbach's testimony to the
Committee, stating that Katzenbach was very concerned about the multitude of
conspiracy theories which had already emerged. Consequently, he wrote a memo
on November 25th to LBJ aide Bill Moyers which emphasized the need to quiet
these rumors. The Katzenbach memo recommends that a statement be issued
immediately indicating that the evidence shows Oswald did it and that there
were no conspirators. The

Cover Story: False Witness: Aptly Named

Garrison experts Jim DiEugenio and Bill Davy team up to combat the latest
anti-Garrison propaganda, this time from Patricia Lambert in her new book, Fal
se Witness. The authors present examples of clear bias, showing how she used
rumor and innuendo and selectively presented evidence to make her case. The
authors show that it is Lambert herself who is a false witness to the record,
and question whether her close associate and friend (and vehement Garrison
detractor) David Lifton will follow in her footsteps when he completes his
new book on Oswald.

The Real James Phelan

We share the contents of a private investigator's report on James Phelan. The
report's author confronted Phelan with evidence of his complicity as an agent
of the government while posing as a reporter, and Phelan's response is
enlightening. Lisa Pease adds a personal anecdote of her own run-in with
Phelan a few years back, and of Phelan's close association with David Lifton
and apparently Gerald Posner as well.

Let Justice Be Done

Bill Davy's new book, Let Justice Be Done, is out. We excerpt here a chapter
from this new work on the Jim Garrison investigation, based largely on files
released since 1992. We also present information on how to order Davy's book.
This is one book no researcher should be without!

Boring's Interesting ARRB Interview

Vince Palamara has been researching the activities of agents of the Secret
Service before, during, and after the assassination of President Kennedy, and
has made remarkable discoveries. He has focused in on the particularly
significant person of Floyd Boring, who was responsible for the President's
security in Dallas. In this piece, Palamara explores new information garnered
from the ARRB's interview of Boring. Palamara also explodes a few myths, such
as the persistent one that Kennedy insisted on less security. Not true,
Palamara proves.

Bremer Wallace: It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again

Lisa Pease presents an in-depth examination of the Wallace shooting, and
finds an all too familiar story. Too many bullets, weird trajectories, a
would-be-assassin that seems not in control of his mind, and the likelihood
of a second shooter. You will be surprised at how much was never written
about this case, given the discrepancies in the evidence. Wallace himself
pleaded for researchers to take an interest in what he felt was a conspiracy.
Read the evidence and make up your own mind.

David Lifton's Letter to the ARRB on Palmer McBride

David Lifton refuses to accept the word of Palmer McBride that he knew Oswald
in 1957, insisting that because Oswald was not in America, McBride must
simply be in error. In this letter, made public by the Review Board, Lifton
asks the Board to pursue the work records of Oswald and Palmer McBride for
this period. (Lifton has never believed that there could have been two people
sharing the identity of Oswald, even though J. Edgar Hoover himself
postulated this in a now-famous memo.)

Palmer McBride's Response to Lifton

When McBride found out what Lifton had written to the ARRB, he composed this
straightfoward response, citing additional witnesses beyond himself who can
support his contention that Oswald worked for Pfisterer's in 1957 and 1958,
and not in 1956. McBride challenges Lifton to deal accurately and fairly with
the record, the whole record.

What's With Walt Brown?

Walt Brown published a glowing review of Patricia Lambert's book False Witness
. While that act alone shows Brown's monumental misunderstanding or lack of
knowledge of the Garrison case, it gets worse. He allowed a known
propagandist, David Reitzes, to do the dirty deed. Jim DiEugenio asks the
salient question: Why is Walt Brown doing this?

Cover Story: Zapruder Film Suit Filed

Jim DiEugenio explains how the Zapruder Film came to be in the government's
possession, and examines the case behind the recent filing of a suit against
the Zapruder family. The ARRB recommended the government purchase the film
from the Zapruders for millions of dollars. But the Zapruder family wants to
retain legal rights to the film. So what, exactly, is the government paying
for? The privelege of taking care of the film without allowing researchers to

The Posthumous Assassination of JFK
Judith Exner, Mary Meyer, and Other Daggers

By James DiEugenio

Current events, most notably a past issue of Vanity Fair, and the upcoming
release of Sy Hersh’s new book, extend an issue that I have dealt with in a
talk I have done several times around the country in the last two years. It
is entitled “The Two Assassinations of John Kennedy.” I call it that because
there has been an ongoing campaign of character assassination ever since
Kennedy was killed.

In the talk to date, I’ve dealt primarily with the attacks on Kennedy from
the left by Noam Chomsky and his henchman Alexander Cockburn which occurred
at the time of the release of Oliver Stone’s JFK. But historically speaking,
the attacks on the Kennedys, both Jack and Robert, have not come
predominantly from the left. The attacks from the right have been much more
numerous. And the attacks from that direction were always harsher and more
personal in tone. As we shall see, that personal tone knows no limits.
Through papers like the New York Times and Washington Post, the attacks
extend into the Kennedys’ sex lives, a barrier that had not been crossed in
post-war mainstream media to that time. To understand their longevity and
vituperativeness, it is necessary to sketch in how they all began. In that
way, the reader will be able to see that Hersh’s book, the Vanity Fair piece
on Judith Exner, and an upcoming work by John Davis on Mary Meyer, are part
of a continuum.

The Right and the Kennedys
There can be no doubt that the right hated the Kennedys and Martin Luther
King. There is also little doubt that some who hated JFK had a role in
covering up his death. One could use Secret Service agent Elmer Moore as an
example. As revealed in Probe (Vol. 4 No. 3, pp. 20-21), Moore told one Jim
Gochenaur how he was in charge of the Dallas doctors testimony in the JFK
case. One of his assignments as liaison for the Warren Commission seems to
have been talking Dr. Malcolm Perry out of his original statement that the
throat wound was one of entry, which would have indicated an assassin in
front of Kennedy. But another thing Gochenaur related in his Church Committee
interview was the tirade that Moore went into the longer he talked to him:
how Kennedy was a pinko who was selling us out to the communists. This went
on for hours. Gochenaur was actually frightened by the time Moore drove him
home.

But there is another more insidious strain of the rightwing in America. These
are the conservatives who sometimes disguise themselves as Democrats, as
liberals, as “internationalists.” This group is typified by men like Averill
Harriman, Henry Stimson, John Foster Dulles and the like. The common rubric
used to catalog them is the Eastern Establishment. The Kennedy brothers were
constantly at odds with them. In 1962, Bobby clashed with Dean Acheson during
the missile crisis. Acheson wanted a surprise attack; Bobby rejected it
saying his brother would not go down in history as another Tojo. In 1961, JFK
disobeyed their advice at the Bay of Pigs and refused to add air support to
the invasion. He was punished for this in Fortune magazine with an article by
Time-Life employee Charles Murphy that blamed Kennedy for the failure of the
plan. Kennedy stripped Murphy of his Air Force reserve status but — Murphy
wrote to Ed Lansdale — that didn’t matter; his loyalty was to Allen Dulles
anyway. In 1963, Kennedy crossed the Rubicon and actually printed money out
of the Treasury, bypassing that crowning jewel of Wall Street, the Federal
Reserve Board. And as Donald Gibson has written, a member of this group, Jock
Whitney, was the first to put out the cover story about that Krazy Kid Oswald
on 11/22/63 (Probe Vol. 4 No.1).

Killing off the Legacy
In 1964, author Morris Bealle, a genuine conservative and critic of the
Eastern Establishment, wrote a novel called Guns of the Regressive Right,
depicting how that elite group had gotten rid of Kennedy. There certainly is
a lot of evidence to substantiate that claim. There were few tears shed by
most rightwing groups over Kennedy’s death. Five years later, they played
hardball again. King and Bobby Kennedy were shot. One would think the coup
was complete. The war was over.

That would be underestimating these people. They are in it for the long haul.
The power elite realizes that, in a very real and pragmatic sense,
assassination isn’t enough. You have to cover it up afterwards, and then be
ready to smother any legacy that might linger. The latter is quite important
since assassination is futile if a man’s ideas live on through others. This
is why the CIA’s Bill Harvey once contemplated getting rid of not only
Castro, but his brother Raul and Che Guevara

The Posthumous Assassination of JFK
Judith Exner, Mary Meyer, and Other Daggers

By James DiEugenio

--[1b]--

Exner’s 1988 Version
Exner’s writer for her new rendition was none other than Kitty Kelley, the
woman who shattered the non-fiction category forever by reducing it to
tabloid standards. Significantly, the article was entitled “The Dark Side of
Camelot,” a phrase used by Ron Rosenbaum (who will be discussed later) and
the title of the upcoming book by Sy Hersh, of whom Kelley is a great
admirer. In this new version, Exner now said that she was seeing Sam Giancana
at Kennedy’s bidding. She even helped arrange meetings between JFK and
Giancana and JFK and Roselli. Some of the meetings took place at 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue. Why would Kennedy need personal consultation with
gangsters like Sam and John? To cinch elections on his ruthless way to the
White House and later to arrange the liquidation of Castro. Kelley adds that
the latter meetings were done for operation MONGOOSE. But Exner’s time
sequence does not jibe with the lifespan of that operation and, as the record
shows, Castro’s assassination was not on the MONGOOSE agenda. In spite of
that explicit record, Kelley adds that historians have never been able to
pinpoint Kennedy’s role in those plots, thereby ignoring the abundant
evidence unearthed by the Church Committee which says he had none.
Nevertheless, Kelley and Exner will now exhume the hidden history of those
times for People. Let’s examine their excavation.

Exner says that Kennedy needed help in West Virginia in the 1960 primary. So
her first secret assignment for Kennedy was to arrange a meeting with “Sam
Flood” for JFK. (By a coincidence, Kennedy also knew Giancana by the very
same alias that Exner did, even though he had fifteen others.) After the
meeting, with Exner waiting outside, Kennedy emerged beaming. He was so
exuberant he wanted to pay for a mink coat for his girl. And of course, he
won the election. On the heels of this success, Exner arranged another
meeting between Kennedy and Giancana. (In an insider aside, Exner assures us
that Giancana called the president “Jack”). In the ensuing exchanges of
sealed envelopes between the two, Exner didn’t open any of them. In another
aside, Kennedy cutely tells her, “Don’t let him [Giancana] turn your head.”

Later, JFK wanted meetings with Roselli too. After a series of these, the
meetings stopped. Retroactively, Exner finally realized that, unbeknownst to
her, she was arranging the plots to kill Castro.

The trusting Kelley never seemed curious enough to ask the skeptical
questions that any researcher would pose. For instance, the Kennedy family’s
worth at that time was estimated to be between 400 and 600 million. With that
kind of money, why would they need someone like Giancana to buy a state as
sparsely populated as West Virginia? Was he supposed to rally up the squirrel
vote? Kelley never asked what Bobby Kennedy’s reaction was to seeing Giancana
at the White House. But considering his efforts against Giancana, it must
have been something like, “Geez Sam, I guess our surveillance slipped. I
didn’t know you were going to be here tonight.” Or to his brother: “Jack,
this is going to make me look like a hypocrite. Also, it will compromise my
case against this guy in court when he shows the judge that photo of us three
sitting here.” Finally, Kelley has no questions about a glaring inconsistency
in her scenario. In the course of these ongoing meetings, probably at the
first one, wouldn’t nice guy Sam say, “Jack I really appreciate the dinner,
but this is all kind of redundant. See, I’m already working with Bob Maheu at
CIA to kill Fidel.” Evidently, Exner was so convincing that neither Kelley
nor her editors ever entertained any doubts. Or to hopeless cynics like
myself, maybe they didn’t want to blow the hundred grand they had invested in
their cover story.

Kelley did ask one pertinent question. Namely, why did Exner not tell Demaris
these startling details back in 1977? Why did she wait eleven years to bare
her soul? Exner says she was afraid and needed to protect herself.
Unfortunately, this rings a bit hollow since 1) Giancana and Roselli were
both dead when she wrote her book, 2) the Church Committee spilled all the
beans on the plots to kill Castro in 1975, which 3) leaves only the Kennedys
to fear, and its clear she doesn’t give a damn about them.

But for those still skeptical, she adds the other (clinching) reason for
breaking the silence: her doctor told her she had terminal cancer and she had
only 36 months to live. The article ends in a crescendo that would move even
the world weary Claude Rains:

Now that I know I’m dying and nothing more can happen to me, I want to

The Posthumous Assassination of JFK Part II
Sy Hersh and the Monroe/JFK Papers:
The History of a Thirty-Year Hoax

By James DiEugenio

On September 25, 1997, ABC used its news magazine program 20/20 to take an
unusual journalistic step. In the first segment of the program, Peter
Jennings took pains to discredit documents that had been about to be used by
its own contracted reporter for an upcoming show scheduled for broadcast. The
contracted reporter was Seymour Hersh. The documents purported to show a
secret deal involving Marilyn Monroe, Sam Giancana, and President John F.
Kennedy. They were to be the cornerstone of Hersh’s upcoming Little, Brown
book, The Dark Side of Camelot. In fact, published reports indicate that it
was these documents that caused the publisher to increase Hersh’s advance and
provoke three networks to compete for a television special to hype the book.
It is not surprising to any informed observer that the documents imploded.
What is a bit surprising is that Hersh and ABC could have been so naive for
so long. And it is ironic that ABC should use 20/20 to expose a phenomenon
that it itself fueled twelve years ago.

What happened on September 25th was the most tangible manifestation of three
distinct yet overlapping journalistic threads that have been furrowing into
our culture since the Church Committee disbanded in 1976. Hersh’s book would
have been the apotheosis of all three threads converged into one book. In the
strictest sense, the convergent movements did not actually begin after Frank
Church’s investigation ended. But it was at that point that what had been a
right-wing, eccentric, easily dismissed undercurrent, picked up a second
wind—so much so that today it is not an eccentric undercurrent at all. It is
accepted by a large amount of people. And, most surprisingly, some of its
purveyors are even accepted within the confines of the research community.

The three threads are these: 1) That the Kennedys ordered Castro’s
assassination, despite the verdict of the Church Committee on the CIA’s
assassination plots. As I noted last issue, the committee report could find no
evidence indicating that JFK and RFK authorized the plots on Fidel Castro,
Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, or Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam.
2) That the Kennedys were really “bad boys,” in some ways as bad as Chicago
mobsters or the “gentleman killers” of the CIA. Although neither JFK nor RFK
was lionized by the main centers of the media while they were alive, because
of their early murders, many books and articles were written afterward that
presented them in a sympathetic light, usually as liberal icons. This was
tolerated by the media establishment as sentimental sop until the revelations
of both Watergate and the Church Committee. This “good guy” image then needed
to be altered since both those crises seemed to reveal that the Kennedys were
actually different than what came before them (Eisenhower and the Dulles
brothers) and what came after (Nixon). Thus began a series of anti-Kennedy
biographies. 3) That Marilyn Monroe’s death was somehow ordained by her
“involvement” with the Kennedy “bad boys.” Again, this was at first a rather
peculiar cottage industry. But around the time of Watergate and the Church
Committee it was given a lift, and going back to a 1964 paradigm, it combined
elements of the first two movements into a Gothic (some would say grotesque)
right-wing propaganda tract which is both humorous and depressing in its
slanderous implications, and almost frightening in its political and cultural
overtones. Egged on by advocates of Judith Exner (e.g. Liz Smith and Tony
Summers), this political and cultural time bomb landed in Sy Hersh’s and
ABC’s lap. When it blew up, all parties went into a damage control mode,
pointing their fingers at each other. As we examine the sorry history of all
three industries, we shall see that there is plenty of blame (and shame) to
be shared. And not just in 1997.

As we saw in Part One of this article, as the Church Committee was preparing
to make its report, the Exner and then Mary Meyer stories made headlines in
the Washington Post. These elements—intrigue from the CIA assassination
plots, plus the sex angles, combined with the previous hazing of Richard
Nixon over Watergate—spawned a wave of new anti-Kennedy “expose” biographies.
Anti-Kennedy tracts were not new. But these new works differed from the
earlier ones in that they owed their genesis and their styles to the events
of the mid-seventies that had brought major parts of the establishment
(specifically, the CIA and the GOP) so much grief. In fact we will deal with
some of the earlier ones later. For now, let us examine this new pedigree and
show how it fits

Harvey, Lee and Tippit:
A New Look at the Tippit Shooting

By John Armstrong

At 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 20, 1963, Dallas Police Officer J.D.
Tippit was having coffee at the Dobbs House Restaurant. Another man, known to
employees as a regular "coffee customer," was complaining loudly about his
order of eggs to waitress Mary Dowling. Tippit, a frequent customer, noticed
the incident but said nothing. The man complaining was later identified by
the owner and employees of the Dobbs House as "Lee Harvey Oswald."

On the morning of November 22nd, J.D. Tippit hugged his oldest son Allen and
said, "no matter what happens today, I want you to know that I love you."
Such overt signs of affection toward his son were uncharacteristic of Tippit.
This was the last time young Allen Tippit saw his father alive. Some time
later, "Lee Harvey Oswald" was seen at the Top Ten Record Store-a block from
the Texas Theater. Oswald returned a short time later and was in the small
record shop at the same time J.D. Tippit was there. An hour later Lee Oswald
walked into the Jiffy Store on Industrial Blvd near Dealey Plaza. He
purchased two bottles of beer and was asked for identification by store clerk
Fred Moore. When Oswald displayed his Texas driver's license, Moore
remembered the birthdate on the license as "October, 1939." When Oswald
returned a short time later he purchased "peco" brittle. Beer and peco
brittle seemed an unusual combination and was remembered by Fred Moore.

Neither the employees nor owners of the Dobbs House Restaurant, Top Ten
Record Store or the Jiffy Store were called to testify before the Warren
Commission. And with good reason. On November 20th and 22nd, "Lee Harvey
Oswald" was working at the Texas School Book Depository (TSBD). He could not
have been at the Dobbs House Restaurant nor the Top Ten Record Store in Oak
Cliff, nor the Jiffy Store on Industrial Blvd.

The Tippit shooting, like the Kennedy assassination, has befuddled
researchers for years. One of the main problems has been witness testimony
placing Oswald in different places at the same time. Was Oswald in the 6th flo
or window or the 2nd floor lunchroom of the TSBD at the time of the
assassination? Did Oswald leave Dealey Plaza in William Whaley's cab or in a
Rambler Station Wagon? Was Oswald sitting in the Texas Theater or shooting
Officer Tippit at 1:15 PM? If Oswald was in the Dallas Jail at 2:00 PM, who
was the man, identified as "Lee Harvey Oswald," driving a red Ford Falcon on
West Davis Street in Oak Cliff-a car with license plates that belonged to
J.D. Tippit's best friend?

Other questions remain unanswered. Why were the spent cartridges given to
Officer Poe at the scene of the Tippit shooting not identified by him four
months later? Was there enough time for Oswald to have walked from 1026 N.
Beckley to 10th Patton? Why did some witnesses identify Oswald as Tippit's
killer while others did not? The questions seem to multiply. The Warren
Commission carefully chose a few select witnesses and questionable evidence
to support their conclusion that Oswald shot Tippit. But when all of the
evidence surrounding the Tippit shooting is properly examined, a far
different picture emerges.

Leaving Dealey Plaza

Shortly before 12:30 PM a photograph captured the image of a man in the
southwest corner window of the TSBD. (This photograph can be found in The
Search for Lee Harvey Oswald on page 109.) The man appears to be wearing a
white T-shirt and has a hairline nearly identical to a photograph of Lee
Oswald taken by Robert Oswald (Lee, page 96-97). Arnold Rowland described a
person wearing "a light-colored shirt," probably the same man, at the west
end window of the 6th floor 15 minutes before the assassination. The man in
the window could have been "Lee Oswald" who had been impersonating and
setting up "Harvey Oswald" as a patsy for the past three months. (See my two
previous articles "Harvey and Lee" in the last two editions of Probe.)

Jack Ruby telephoned a friend on November 22nd and asked if he would "like to
watch the fireworks." Unknown to Ruby, his friend was an informant for the
criminal intelligence division of the Internal Revenue Service. He and Ruby
were standing at the corner of the Postal Annex Building at the time of the
shooting. Minutes after the shooting Phil Willis, who knew Jack Ruby, saw and
photographed a man who looked like Ruby near the front of the School Book
Depository.

Harvey Oswald told police he had been in the lunchroom at the time of the
assassination and had "committed no acts of violence." Coworker Charles
Douglas Givens remembered Oswald wore a brown, long sleeved shirt the day of
the assassination. This brown shirt was noticed by Mary Bledsoe

CBS and the RFK Case

By Lisa Pease

Late last year, it looked like the RFK case had finally gotten a big break.
Two newsman—Philip Shimkin, a CBS producer in New York, and Robert Buechler,
of CBS News in San Francisco— had written to Sirhan Sirhan in prison, asking
for an interview based on his recent and new claim of innocence at his last
parole hearing. Sirhan forwarded CBS’s letter to his trusted researcher, to
whom he has granted limited power of attorney, Rose Lynn Mangan. Mangan
called up CBS and asked them to put in writing their intentions. They
responded with little information, writing only that they wanted an interview
with Sirhan to discuss developments in his case for a possible segment on
Bryant Gumbel’s show Public Eye. Mangan told them that prison rules generally
do not allow for on-camera interviews of prisoners, but that the two men
could come to see Sirhan as visitors, and sent them the requisite forms.

The two went to see Sirhan in the company of Mangan, Sirhan’s brother Adel,
and Sirhan’s current lawyer Larry Teeter. During the conversation, the two
CBS men suggested staging a "chance encounter" with Sirhan where they could
"happen" upon him in the yard outside, and film him through the fence. A
genuine chance encounter with a prisoner in a public area is not prohibited.
But Mangan smelled a rat, and asked Teeter to follow up with the Department
of Corrections, saying that she would only recommend that Sirhan give an
interview if CBS obtained written permission from the Warden. Teeter wrote to
the Department of Corrections, informing them of the proposed plan (without
mentioning CBS or the people involved by name), and asked the Department for
guidance. A Senior Staff Counsel responded, saying that while the media "may
interview randomly encountered inmates in general population areas," the
Department "vigorously objects to any plans to circumvent the Department’s
media policy i.e., by prearranging to have a specific inmate present at a
particular place and time." In response to the query of what punishment might
be enacted in the event of such an accident, the Department responded that
"Enforcement of these policies include [sic] disciplinary action against the
inmate and statewide exclusion of the media or legal personnel involved." In
other words, had Sirhan agreed to go ahead with this plot, he might have been
cut off from his lawyer, his brother, his researcher and the very media
people he was hoping to reach.

Why would CBS propose such a scheme? Was this approach genuinely based in a
serious interest in the case, or was some other motivation at work? Shimkin
and Buechler had shown particular interest in some of Mangan’s latest
research, but when she showed it to them they immediately strove to find
fault with it, hardly the kind of objective approach for which the group had
been hoping. The CBS men suggested hiring their own expert to examine the
findings in Mangan’s research. Mangan said that she would want to be present
at the examination. This suggestion caused the men to suggest that would be
tantamount to having Mangan run the show. As the evidence is extremely
complex, Mangan wanted to be present herself to make sure that were there any
questions, she would be available to answer and explain, rather than have
someone guess and misinterpret what she had presented. When the CBS men
flatly refused this offer, Mangan, who for years has felt that nothing would
be a greater boon to this case than some serious publicity, balked, and told
them "Give me back my papers." The men went into shock, not dreaming she
could be serious. They told her that the very papers they had earlier
ridiculed were critical to the show’s success, and that they would not do a
segment if she withdrew the papers at this time. "Give me back my papers,"
Mangan repeated. She also suggested that CBS hire three experts, not just one.
She suggested as an additional two both Cyril Wecht and Henry Lee, forensic
experts whom she felt would do their best to deal honestly with the evidence.
Using only one expert left the door open for a rigged situation, or
suspicions of such. The men refused to assent to any of these suggestions,
and drove off visibly perturbed by what had transpired. The Sirhan brothers,
Teeter, and Mangan herself were predictably disappointed. Perhaps they would
have been less so had they remembered the broadcast CBS did on the Sirhan
case back in 1975.

In 1975, in the wake of the Church and Pike committee investigations of the
CIA, CBS produced a four-part series called The American Assassins, hosted by
Dan Rather. The first two shows dealt with the John F. Kennedy assassination,
the third dealt with the Martin Luther King assassination, and

He's Baaack!
The Return of Gerald Posner

By Jim DiEugenio

This past March, April and May, Gerald Posner did a mini-version rerun of
what he had done in 1993. Five years ago, Posner wrote one of the most
one-sided, monomaniacal books ever on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Ca
se Closed was given a huge publicity build-up and, when released, Posner was
allotted more public appearances on major media outlets than any author in
recent memory, save Seymour Hersh in 1997. In the meantime, Posner has become
a regular name at publications like the New York Times and Time magazine. In
the latter publication, early last year, the first announcements came that
Posner was at work on a book on the King assassination. No surprise, it was
timed to appear at the time of the thirtieth anniversary of King’s murder.
Although Posner did not get quite as big a launch this time as before, he
still appeared with Dan Rather on 48 Hours (3/24/98), and had a large spread
in Newsweek (4/6/98). The latter was interesting in that it coupled an
excerpt from Posner’s book with rather unenthusiastic articles about King’s
legacy and the lives and characters of his children. The phenomenon that Probe
detailed about the JFK assassination—a posthumous character attack to go
with a cover-up about the original murder—was now transmuted and crystallized
in the MLK case.
Killing the Dream is pretty much drawn from the same mold as Case Closed

.
Posner shows the same type of "convict at any cost" attitude, the same
quoting of clearly biased resources, the same use of character assassination
on the supposed perpetrator, the same heavy-handed maneuvering of the
evidence to rig the deck. For instance, in his public appearances, Posner’s
version of candor is admitting that certain government agencies had
surveillance on King. Sending King a note with a thinly veiled threat to
commit suicide or be sexually blackmailed—which is what the FBI did to
King—qualifies as a bit more than intelligence surveillance. Yet, no
commentator I listened to challenged Posner on this point. This included the
supposedly liberal Marc Cooper of the Los Angeles Pacifica outlet, KPFK.
Shockingly, or not, two of the featured voices on National Public Radio on
the thirtieth anniversary of King’s death were Posner and Robert Blakey.

How single-minded is single-minded? In an interview in the San Jose Mercury Ne
ws (4/26/98), reporter Jeff Guinn asked Posner if Ray had actually killed
King. Posner’s answer was, to put it lightly, untouched with ambiguity:
"There is no question. Ray was the shooter. That’s how I see the evidence,
how anybody objective has to see the evidence." Posner went on to use Robert
Blakey’s HSCA version of a motive, the Ray brothers were after a $50,000
bounty put up by a St. Louis racist. As Bill Pepper and others have noted it
is odd that, if this was the motive, there exists no evidence to indicate
that Ray or his brothers tried to collect the money. Another oddity here is
that one of the people who Posner thanks in his book is none other than David
Lifton. Back in 1977, Lifton, with Jeff Cohen, wrote an article for New
Times. It (rather weakly) postulated Ray as a racist and his brother Jerry
Ray as a co-conspirator in a rightwing plot. This article caught the eye of
Blakey and the HSCA and Lifton’s ideas ended up influencing the final product
of their Final Report. Posner acknowledges that his debt to Lifton is a bit
odd, but makes no more of it than that. We wonder what Lifton would think of
another comment from that interview which is a pure Posnerism:

The murders of Martin Luther King and John Kennedy did not do justice to the
status of the victims. Many people want something meatier to lend extra
weight to how they died. In each case, a conspiracy does that nicely. Look,
the facts are that King and Kennedy were killed by sociopathic
losersThere were no intricate assassination plots. None.

Such metaphysical certainty from a man who writes about scouring the Toronto
Sun newspaper for mentions of Ray in 1967 when that newspaper did not exist
until 1971. Ditto for research Posner did at the so-called Canadian Bureau of
Vital Statistics, which also is non-existent.
No surprise, the symphony of praise also included the New York Times and the M
emphis Commercial Appeal. The former review was written by Anthony Lewis,
their liberal commentator who also praised the Warren Commission Report when
it was first issued. The latter’s review was penned by Marc Perrusquia who
was that newspaper’s point man on the effort by Bill Pepper to revive the
King case. The praise for Posner extends through the major media to major
political figures. In June of last year, Governor Frank Keating of Oklahoma
praised Posner’s earlier work on the JFK case as

Dodd and Dulles vs. Kennedy in Africa

“In assessing the central character ...
Gibbon’s description of the Byzantine general
Belisarius may suggest a comparison:
‘His imperfections flowed from the contagion of the times;
his virtues were his own.’”
— Richard Mahoney on President Kennedy

By Jim DiEugenio

As Probe has noted elsewhere (especially in last year’s discussion of Sy
Hersh’s anti-Kennedy screed, The Dark Side of Camelot), a clear strategy of
those who wish to smother any search for the truth about President Kennedy’s
assassination is to distort and deny his achievements in office. Hersh and
his ilk have toiled to distort who Kennedy really was, where he was going,
what the world would have been like if he had lived, and who and what he
represented. As with the assassination, the goal of these people is to
distort, exaggerate, and sometimes just outright fabricate in order to
obfuscate specific Kennedy tactics, strategies, and outcomes.

This blackening of the record—disguised as historical revisionism—has been
practiced on the left, but it is especially prevalent on the right. Political
spy and propagandist Lucianna Goldberg—such a prominent figure in the current
Clinton sex scandal—was tutored early on by the godfather of the anti-Kennedy
books, that triple-distilled rightwinger and CIA crony Victor Lasky. In fact,
at the time of Kennedy’s death, Lasky’s negative biography of Kennedy was on
the best-seller lists. Lately, Christopher Matthews seemed to be the
designated hitter on some of these issues (see the article on page 26).
Curiously, his detractors ignore Kennedy’s efforts in a part of the world far
from America, where Kennedy’s character, who and what he stood for, and how
the world may have been different had he lived are clearly revealed. But to
understand what Kennedy was promoting in Africa, we must first explore his
activities a decade earlier.

The Self-Education of John F. Kennedy

During Kennedy’s six years in the House, 1947-1952, he concentrated on
domestic affairs, bread and butter issues that helped his middle class
Massachusetts constituents. As Henry Gonzalez noted in his blurb for Donald
Gibson’s Battling Wall Street, he met Kennedy at a housing conference in 1951
and got the impression that young Kennedy was genuinely interested in the
role that government could play in helping most Americans. But when Kennedy,
his father, and his advisers decided to run for the upper house in 1952, they
knew that young Jack would have to educate himself in the field of foreign
affairs and gain a higher cosmopolitan profile. After all, he was running
against that effete, urbane, Boston Brahmin Henry Cabot Lodge. So Kennedy
decided to take two seven-week-long trips. The first was to Europe. The
second was a little unusual in that his itinerary consisted of places like
the Middle East, India, and Indochina. (While in India, he made the
acquaintance of Prime Minister Nehru who would end up being a lifelong friend
and adviser.)

Another unusual thing about the second trip was his schedule after he got to
his stops. In Saigon, he ditched his French military guides and sought out
the names of the best reporters and State Department officials so he would
not get the standard boilerplate on the French colonial predicament in
Indochina. After finding these sources, he would show up at their homes and
apartments unannounced. His hosts were often surprised that such a youthful
looking young man could be a congressman. Kennedy would then pick their minds
at length as to the true political conditions in that country.

If there is a real turning point in Kennedy’s political career it is this
trip. There is little doubt that what he saw and learned deeply affected and
altered his world view and he expressed his developing new ideas in a speech
he made upon his return on November 14, 1951. Speaking of French Indochina he
said: "This is an area of human conflict between civilizations striving to be
born and those desperately trying to retain what they have held for so long."
He later added that "the fires of nationalism so long dormant have been
kindled and are now ablazeHere colonialism is not a topic for tea-talk
discussion; it is the daily fare of millions of men." He then criticized the
U. S. State Department for its laid back and lackadaisical approach to this
problem:

One finds too many of our representatives toadying to the shorter aims of
other Western nations with no eagerness to understand the real hopes and
desires of the people to which they are accredited.

The basic idea that Kennedy brought back from this trip was that, in the
Third World, the colonial or imperial powers were bound to lose in the long
run since the force of

Who is Gus Russo?

By Jim DiEugenio

In late 1991, when Oliver Stone released JFK, Mark Lane decided to write his
third book about the Kennedy assassination. Anyone who has read Plausible
Denial, knows the significance of Marita Lorenz to that book. When the book
became a bestseller, the media was eager to attack it. So in Newsweek, a man
was quoted deriding Lorenz in quite strong terms as telling wild and bizarre
stories and being generally unreliable. The source was, at that time, a
little known Kennedy researcher. He was so obscure that Lane replied to the
reporter, "So who is Gus Russo? Has he ever written a book? Has he ever
written an article?" At that time, to my knowledge, he had done neither. But
now Russo has written a book. It is so dreadful in every aspect that Lane’s
question carries more weight now than then. In retrospect, it seems quite
prescient.

I can speak about this rather bracing phenomenon from firsthand experience.
To my everlasting embarrassment, Gus Russo is listed in the acknowledgments
to my book, Destiny Betrayed. In my defense, I can only argue that my
association with Russo at that time was from a distance. We had communicated
over the phone a few times because I had heard he was interested in the New
Orleans scene and had done some work on Permindex, the murky rightwing front
group that Clay Shaw had worked for in Italy in the late fifties and early
sixties. Later, after my book came out in the summer of 1992, he called me
and asked me for some supporting documents that I had used in writing it. My
first impressions of Russo were that he was amiable, interested, and that,
since he lived in Baltimore, he was quite familiar with what was available
for viewing at the National Archives and at the Assassination Archives and
Research Center in Washington D. C.

First Encounter

I encountered Russo in person a couple of times at the end of 1992 and the
beginning of 1993. I attended the ‘92 ASK Conference in Dallas where I
exchanged some materials with him and at which he did an ad hoc talk with
John Newman. I did not actually attend that dual presentation but I heard
that Russo’s part centered on some aspects of military intelligence dealing
with the assassination. Specifically it concerned Air Force Colonel Delk
Simpson, an acquaintance of both LBJ military aide Howard Burris and CIA
officer David Atlee Phillips, about whom some significant questions had been
raised. And since he was coupled with Newman, I assumed that Russo was
investigating the possibility of some form of foreknowledge of the
assassination in some high military circles. My other encounter with Russo in
this time period was even more direct. Toward the end of 1992, I had reason
to visit Washington to see a research associate and examine a new CIA
database of documents that was probably the best index of assassination-relate
d materials available at the time. We decided to call up Russo and we
arranged to spend a Saturday night at his home.

When we got there, Russo was his usual amiable self and his surroundings
revealed that he was indeed immersed in the Kennedy assassination. There were
photos of a man who was a dead ringer for Oswald in combat fatigues in
Florida, where Oswald was never supposed to have been. Russo had obtained
letters showing that George de Mohrenschildt had been in contact with George
Bush at a much earlier date than anyone had ever suspected. Russo had a
library of books on the Kennedy assassination that was abundant and
expansive. He had secured a letter written by Jim Garrison to Jonathan
Blackmer of the House Select Committee on Assassinations that examined the
significance of two seemingly obscure suspects in his investigation, Fred Lee
Crisman and Thomas Beckham. Russo had a letter from Beckham to a major
magazine that was extraordinarily interesting. It discussed the young man’s
relationship with Jack Martin, the CIA, the Bay of Pigs, a man who fit the
description of Guy Banister, and a personal acquaintance of his, "this double
agent, Lee Harvey Oswald." (Significantly, none of the above material appears
in Russo’s book.)

Russo and the Anniversary

It was 1993 that proved an important year for Russo. It was the 30th
anniversary of the murder and there were plenty of books, articles, and even
television shows being prepared in anticipation of that event. Russo somehow
had heard of a new author on the scene, a man named Gerald Posner. To some
people he was actually praising the man and touting some of the new
"revelations" to be unsheathed in his upcoming book. Russo had just come off
of working for Oliver Stone on JFK: The Book of the Film, which had turned
out fairly well. Jane Rusconi, Stone’s chief research assistant at the

False Witness: Aptly Titled

By Jim DiEugenio and Bill Davy

Following on the heels of Gus Russo’s Live By the Sword, another propaganda
tract has been published. False Witness, by Patricia Lambert, is a hit piece
on Jim Garrison and Oliver Stone. Curiously, Lambert formerly went under the
name Patricia Billings. We can’t help but wonder if she was related in some
manner to Dick Billings, the Time-LIFE journalist who actively worked to
undermine Garrison’s case, and who had strong ties to the CIA.

Patricia Lambert has basically taken a stale track and updated it with
extremely selective sections from new documents to perform the same function
that authors and journalists like Milton Brener, James Kirkwood, James
Phelan, and Hugh Aynesworth have performed in the past. Once again, she
attempts to portray Garrison’s investigation as a complete fraud from start
to finish. Her thesis: every person under suspicion by Garrison was either
put upon or persecuted by the deluded DA. This includes David Ferrie and
especially Clay Shaw. Therefore, Stone built his film on a foundation of
quicksand. Consequently the attacks on the movie were justified as the
picture, by necessity, was a false portrait of the JFK case. When one
compares the documentation in the book to the bulk of the record, the book’s
title takes on new meaning, describing its author instead of its subject.

Lambert’s caustic attack on Garrison paints him as a child molester and
compares him to cult leader David Koresh. This last comparison is key to
Lambert’s characterization of Garrison. Otherwise how could Garrison control
the likes of Bill Alford, Andrew Sciambra, Numa Bertel, Al Oser, Lou Ivon,
John Volz, Richard Burnes, D’alton Williams, Frank Meloche, Lynn Loisel,
James Alcock, George Eckert, Sal Scalia, Bill Boxley, William Martin, et.
al—all of whom assisted Garrison in his investigation and must have come
under his spell. According to Lambert, the answer is simple of course.
Garrison was also a Svengali. Oliver Stone is not spared Lambert’s vitriol
either. By quoting an out of context interview, he is likened to Adolf
Hitler’s documentarian, Leni Riefenstahl. When an author deals in this kind
of hyperbole, it only serves to detract from the credibility of the writing.
Absent the hyperbolic treatment however, this work is still less than
credible. A recent Baltimore Sun review describes it as having "scant
historical merit."

Patricia Lambert is a longtime friend and colleague of David Lifton who
helped him on his manuscript for Best Evidence. Predictably, Lambert begins
the book by saying that she was a believer in Garrison at the start of his
probe who gradually grew disenchanted with him as his probe expanded and
unraveled and finally ended with the failure of the Clay Shaw trial. This
approach always leaves us a bit suspicious since, as with Sylvia Meagher, it
always leaves out the overpowering attack on Garrison that took pains to
ensure his failure. Lambert, working from a stacked deck, ignores that attack
and its origins and motive. Therefore, the picture drawn is already skewed
and distorted.

Lambert loads the book with sources who have an agenda. She uses people like
Aaron Kohn, David Chandler, Milton Brener, James Phelan, and Shaw’s lawyers
without hesitation or qualification. And, of course, she sterilizes the
sources by not informing the reader why and how they are compromised. For
example, today there are literally dozens of FBI cables between Kohn in New
Orleans and FBI HQ in Washington. Most of them explicitly discuss ways to
sidetrack or smear Garrison. Lambert uses Kohn, but mentions none of this.
David Chandler lived in an apartment owned by Shaw in New Orleans, so how
neutral would one expect him to be? Chandler also admitted knowing Kerry
Thornley, a character to which we will return at length, as well as to having
met Oswald on several occasions before the assassination. Milton Brener
represented Layton Martens, a Shaw associate and friend of David Ferrie’s, as
well as Walter Sheridan, a man who went to dishonest lengths to attack
Garrison. And of course, Shaw’s lawyers can hardly be considered an unbiased
source.

The dodging of this new evidence to whitewash Garrison’s attackers reaches
almost humorous dimensions in the case of Phelan. Lambert knows she has a
serious problem here since Phelan, with the new file releases, has been
revealed to be a longtime FBI informant who informed to the Bureau about
Garrison and dropped off documents in Washington which he had gotten from the
DA. Further, this is something that Phelan always denied doing, in the
apparent hope that these records would never be declassified. This new record
on Phelan is either ignored or cavalierly

In a book I found in the stacks of the Bork (sp?) Law Library at Berkeley
titled "The War Crimes Trial of I G Farben Co.," I learned several things.
(The book, since I have publicized these facts, has disappeared both from
the stacks and from the records, although a book of similar title is there,
but without the list!!) I G Farben Co was, coincidentally, the company that
manufactured the infamous gas used in the "chambers," and two things in the
book caught my attention; first, I G Farben was, initially, a "Jew" owned
company, and several of its star chemists, etc., were Jewish,

So what's your point???

 and second, in
a list at its beginning I took note that people of various races, religions,
political leanings, etc., were candidates for the ovens, and it was readily
apparent that a tremendous number of people other than Jews were killed in
 the "camps."

Yes, but not for being Jews. The point is, that Christian Europe
used genocide
to solve it's theological differences with the Jews. This is a
bad thing. Baaad.

I G Farben Co. had offices in America and contacts in
Washington, and for some strange reason did not get bombed until very late
in the war even though it also manufactured many significant materials and
 fuel and rubber from coal!

I do not understand why the world is so ensnared in the concept of a Jewish
holocaust when at least an equal number of "men and women" of other
persuasions and nationalities were murdered. Where is their memorial in
Washington D.C.? And in the minds of the rest of the world?

I'll tell you why doc. It's a Jewish plot to annoy good god
fearing
Christians like you. And to make the world see how loving your
religion
really is.

One last point. Try to be a Christian in Israel!! There is almost NO
TOLERANCE for people of other faiths in Israel,

And there doesn't need to be either. Israel is a Jewish State.
The Vatican
is a Catholic State. Neither of them owe other religions
anything. Get it?
Before the Chinese invasion Tibet was a Buddhist Theocracy. So
what? No one
is forcing you to live in any of these places.

 and yet the United States
sends a huge amount of money to a country that is bigoted to an extreme. I
wonder (really?) why Congress appropriates so much money to a nation with
 such rabid intolerance of others.

What intolerance are you talking about? Are you stupid or just
full of shit?
Every religion on the planet including Buddhists, and Bahais are
free to
practice their beliefs in israel. Israel allows the Pope to own
real estate
in Jerusalem. The Pope is an enemy of Israel. I'd say that's
damned tolerant.

I think we call such treatment "hate
crimes" in this country!.. I'm afraid there are always more questions than
anyone has answers to, right! Dr. Donald Wishart.

I think that you are an ignorant bigot. But lucky for you it's
not
a hate crime to be an ignorant bigot in this country.

Police fears over
 William's friends

  David Leppard and Christopher Morgan
POLICE officers responsible for protecting
Prince William are understood to have
requested advice from their superiors amid
growing concern about drug-taking among
those in his circle.

The officers are said to have sought
"clarification" about what action to take over
the use of cocaine by those who socialise with
the prince. Their move comes amid mounting
concern in royal circles over the growing
numbers of reports that friends of William, 17,
who is still at Eton, have admitted taking
cocaine.

The Sunday Times has learnt this weekend that
yet another friend of the circle with whom he
associates has been seen taking the drug. Izzy
Winkler, a leading socialite, was seen taking
cocaine at a fashionable London party.

In a statement to the newspaper, a fellow
partygoer said that he was identifying Winkler
because he was concerned about William's
welfare. Winkler was unavailable for
comment yesterday, despite repeated attempts
to contact her.

Her alleged drug-taking
follows disclosures last
year that Tom Parker
Bowles, the 25-year-old
son of Camilla, and one
of William's closest
friends, had admitted
taking cocaine. The
incident reportedly led
the Prince of Wales to
warn his son about the
dangers of drugs. Another
friend, Lord Frederick
Windsor, has also
admitted taking the drug.

While there is no
suggestion that William
himself has taken drugs or
condones drug-taking,
there is great concern
about the behaviour of some of those who call
themselves his friends.

Security around the prince is so tight that there
is little chance of hard drugs getting through to
him.

Protection officers responsible for vetting
William's friends have been checking out some
of the nightclubs they use. Last night Scotland
Yard said concerns had not been brought to the
attention of Commander Peter Clarke, head of
its royal protection division.

"Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything."
Communist Tyrant Josef Stalin
ABC Posted Results One Day Before Election

For a complete change of pace, today we have an article written right
after the 1998 November election by yours truly. I want to intersperse
analysis of the current election melodrama with the massive
documentation in our files that something is wrong – and it’s not in
Denmark!

Being on this e-wire list is meant to be a home study course on the fair
elections issue. Here’s the article about the incredible ABC glitch on
the day BEFORE the November, 1998 elections.

Original article title: ABC Almost Drops Its Mask By Posting Election
Results 12 Hours BEFORE the Voting Begins

Original article subtitle: ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN are the Foremost
Enemies of Honest Elections

Election Was Pre-Programmed!

In another incredible snafu, ABC News posted state by state election
results for the 1998 mid-term Congressional elections on Monday night
November 2nd — about 12 hours before the Tuesday voting even began!

The election results were a test which was “erroneously” posted on ABC’s
worldwide internet site, according to an ABC spokesmen. “It wasn’t our
finest hour,” Michelle Bergman, manager of communications for ABC.com
told the Associated Press.

The “election results” were quickly pulled when The Drudge Report and
other internet news organizations began to have a hay day making fun of
ABC’s dilemma. Bob Djurdjevic of the reputable Truth in Media (TiM)
report, cracked that ABC had added “The Lord” to its line-up of network
commentators.

But before ABC could act to retract its global goof, countless internet
sites had already “mirrored” the never-supposed-to-be seen information.
(Citizen’s for a Fair Vote Count has a hard copy of the ABC “test” run
in our files.)

In fact, it is widely believed that someone from among the computer
technicians and engineers, who had gone on strike against ABC hours
before, had thrown the pre-programmed election results up on the website
to embarrass ABC management.

This is at least the second time ABC has been caught with truly
“incredible” foreknowledge of election results. In 1984 a Dr. Singer in
Colorado intercepted on his satellite dish a full blown dress rehearsal
of the Reagan-Mondale election — on the Sunday evening before the
election! (This article and the original clip in 1985 in Parade Magazine
will be carried in a future Network America e-wire. For library
researchers, you can find this article in Parade Magazine, January 6,
1985 issue)

It WAS a Test, but . . .

Now, it is important not to go overboard in drawing conclusions from
ABC’s fortuitous faux pas.

It does not, it itself, prove that the election is entirely fixed in
every important detail (as Citizens for a Fair Vote Count believes is
actually the case). BUT, it does prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that
numbers and final results for all key races have been pre-programmed
into computers before the first real vote in the election has even been
cast.

So what? So if one set of numbers can be pre-programmed into the
computers as a “test”, another set can be pre-programmed in as the
“final results” to be unveiled on Election night, — after the
manipulated Big Media public opinion polls and phony election day “exit
polls” (both also conducted by the Big Media) have prepared the public
mind for such “final results.”

With all those honest blue collar and white collar employees working at
ABC and the other Big networks both during the Monday pre-election test
AND during the Tuesday Election night, the Media Moguls couldn’t throw
up the exact same numbers — it would be too obvious that everything was
fixed. But maybe after 25 years of “success” in overseeing computerized
elections, our high-tech Rulers are getting a little lazy — and only
changing a few of the numbers for the Monday night test? You decide:

Some of ABC’s Election Eve “Test” Results were amazingly Accurate

“Once again,” wrote Dean McCullough, a reporter for Wired, an important
computer magazine, “the Net had it first, this time by accident.”

Ingrid Rimland posted on her internet Zundelsite
(webcom.com/ezundel/english) an article by Adam Clayton Powell III: ABC
News’ Election Eve ‘Net’ “Mistake”.

Powell skewered ABC mercilessly on the day after the Tuesday election:

“With almost all election districts reporting, those phony ABC News test
numbers on Monday accurately matched the outcomes of the Senate and
governor races in 61 of 70 contests — 87%. It would

Saturday, 26 February, 2000

This afternoon, the Complementary and Alternative Health Care Freedom of
Access Act was passed out of the MN House Of Representatives Civil Law
Committee with
strong, if not unanimous, support of the committee, and with no objection.
This voice
vote ended an intense three hour hearing, with many amendment discussions
and votes.
The bill finally passed with the support of Representative Dave Bishop, a
powerful senior
member from Rochester, the home of the Mayo Clinic. In fact, Mr. Bishop was
very
instrumental in helping craft language that enabled the amendments to move
relatively quickly
through the committee.

This vote was the most important moment in the 3 1/2 year history of the
freedom movement and the 1 year history of the freedom legislation. The bill
must now be heard by all additional house committees by 10 March, and it is
expected that
the bill will be voted on by the full house of representatives by sometime
in April.

Now that the bill has passed the house civil law committee, the senate
health committee will hear the bill. It is expected that the bill will
follow a similar
road in the senate to the one it followed in the house, and, if successful,
that it will be enacted by
both houses this spring.

February 27 2000 FAR EAST

Writer reveals Japanese plot to kill Mountbatten

Michael Sheridan, Hong Kong

EARL Mountbatten of Burma narrowly escaped a Japanese plot to ambush and
shoot down his aircraft over China during the second world war, according to
a new book that discloses untold secrets about the intelligence war in the
Far East.
Japanese intelligence had learnt that Mountbatten, supreme Allied commander
in southeast Asia and a cousin of George VI, was flying to meet the Chinese
nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek at Chungking in southwest China.

For Japan, it would have been revenge for the death of Admiral Isoroku
Yamamoto, the architect of the Pearl Harbor attack, who was shot down and
killed by American fighters in April 1943. But British intelligence had
realised that the Japanese were intercepting communications to Chungking.

Undaunted by a warning, Mountbatten changed the date of his departure in
October 1943 and flew without a fighter escort by night, successfully
completing the important mission. On the day he had originally planned to
fly, the Japanese put up what Mountbatten later called "a terrific fighter
sweep".

Mountbatten, who was murdered by an IRA bomb in 1979, referred to his change
of plan in his published diaries, but never disclosed the clandestine battle
between Allied codebreakers and their Japanese foes.

Chinese communications remained so insecure that, in 1944, Anthony Eden, then
foreign secretary, ordered the closure of the Chinese embassy in London for
fear that it might have given away the planning for D-Day. Eden had been
shocked to read, in a decoded Japanese telegram, extracts from a conversation
he had with the Chinese ambassador.

The Mountbatten story is among a host of wartime secrets brought to light by
Richard Aldrich, senior lecturer in politics at Nottingham University, in
Intelligence and the War Against Japan, to be published by Cambridge
University Press next month. It discloses embarrassing proof that British and
American secret services often competed instead of fighting the Japanese.

British spies sought to preserve control of India while the Americans were
bent on destroying European colonial empires. Secret rivalry between the
allies led to tragedy over Indochina on the night of January 22, 1945, when
two Liberator bombers from the RAF's 358 Squadron were destroyed by P-61
Black Widow fighters of the US 14th Air Force.

The Liberators were on a secret mission to fly supplies to agents behind
enemy lines, but Britain and America were at odds over whose agents could
operate in the future Vietnam and, as a result, the RAF had not informed the
Americans of the flights. Aldrich has uncovered evidence that Britain knew
the Americans had shot down the planes, but chose to cover up the reason.

Competition and controversy stalked the Anglo-American relationship
throughout the war. One damaging episode was Britain's loss of a precious
American "Purple" decoding machine at the fall of Singapore in 1942, one of
only two given to the British. It was used to decipher Japanese diplomatic
traffic, including messages from Baron Oshima, the Japanese ambassador to
Berlin, reporting his meetings with Hitler.

It vanished amid the chaos as the Japanese overran the colony, but luckily
Oshima's eloquent telegrams kept flowing.

One joint operation that did work was a clandestine programme to kidnap Thai,
Malay and Indonesian civilians and sailors at sea. They were taken to a camp
in Ceylon, where conditions were poor and many were drugged or beaten. After
interrogation, many agreed to be infiltrated back as agents in

Aldrich documents a British secret establishment at war with itself as the
empire receded and the Americans stole Britain's role in the east. SIS
managed to keep an agent, Michael Lindsay, alongside Mao Tse-tung throughout
much of the war as a "radio expert" - but his political intelligence paled
alongside the buccaneering exploits of the Hong Kong gentleman bankers and
traders recruited into SOE.

John Keswick, a pivotal figure in SOE's China operations, was a director of
the trading firm Jardine Matheson and drew similar men to his colours after
Hong Kong fell to the Japanese at Christmas, 1941. Their chicanery included

bribing nationalist generals to slow down their victorious advance from

In the end it was Arthur May, a daredevil prisoner of war, who escaped to

So I guess we know who wants us to believe this weasely little charlatan.
Can we really be as stupid as the media moguls think we are? Prudy

Title: The First Death Count

The First Death
Count14 may be dead in
compound, ran a headline in the Dallas Morning News, March 3, 1993. Heavy
casualties among the Davidians is believable, given the strafing, the frontal
infantry assault, and the flimsy structure. With time, however, the February 28
death count was revised downward.

The modest plywood shelter the Branch Davidians had built with the own hands
could not be expected to withstand the barrage of helicopter machine gun fire
and the hail of bullets from the frontal infantry assault of February 28.
Early accounts indicated that a child, or children had been
killed that day. This was surely not unexpected, because the helicopters had
fired into the second story quarters where the children lived.
When the Davidians were attacked, they called 911. The call was taped. The
recording captured David Koresh's voice: You see you brought your bunch of
guys out here and you killed some of my children. We told you we wanted to talk.
. . Dallas Morning News, March 1, quoted Steve Schneider: People are
lying dead in here, babies and everything . . . (pg. 13A), and also
reported David Koresh saying a 2-year old girl was killed.
Early in March, Waco researcher Ken Fawcett captured raw TV footage, not
shown on nightly newscasts, which showed several black clad men carrying what
appeared to be a small body in a body bag to an ambulance waiting outside the
Mt. Carmel Center. The identical footage is shown in Waco, the Big
Lie.
Reports also indicated that 14 Branch Davidians in the Mt. Carmel Center at
the time of the raid had been killed. On March 3, the Dallas Morning News
reported that a McLennan County official who was familiar with
the negotiations said that as many as 14 people are believed dead and that 'a
whole lot' are wounded, (pg. 14A) Another Davidian, Michael Schroeder, was
off site when the raid occurred, and was killed when he was repeatedly shot in
the back while attempting to get back to the Center to reach his family.
Schroeder's death would have been the fifteenth Davidian death on February 28.
 On March 2 arrangements had
reportedly been made to end the confrontation. David Koresh was to tape a
message he wanted the American people to hear. The taped message would be aired
on national radio. The dead and the wounded would be taken to Hillcrest Baptist
Medical Center and the Branch Davidians would confront the government in the
courtroom (Dallas Morning News, March 3, 1993).
Hillcrest Hospital had set up a temporary morgue and emergency room to handle
the Davidian dead and wounded. According to the Dallas Morning News,
Hillcrest expected that the Davidians were going to arrive after 2:30 pm
on March 2. A triage area was set up outside the emergency room, and an area for
a temporary morgue designated. Shortly before 1:00 pm, agents
arrived at the hospital in a large white truck and took up positions on rooftops
surrounding the emergency room. They surveyed the area through binoculars and
clutched assault rifles to their chests. (Dallas Morning News, March 3,
1993, pg. 14A.)
But the dead and wounded Davidians reportedly never arrived at Hillcrest.
David Koresh's taped massage was not aired on national radio, but aired on a
local station. The FBI would later say that David Koresh simply broke his word
on March 2 and refused to let anyone leave. They implied that the local radio
airing of Koresh's taped message should have been good enough.
On the other hand, there could be an alternate explanation for the events of
March 2. The FBI's Hostage Rescue Team had fully installed itself as the
tactical unit in charge of the siege on that date (Treasury Report, pg. 118).
Perhaps the new management decided against the release of the dead
and the wounded. Surely there would be good reason to make the change.
The confirmation that a child or children had been killed in the February 28
raid would have surely had the gravest political consequences for the US
government. The raid had taken place just weeks after the new Democratic
president, William Clinton, had been inaugurated. But the raid had obviously
been planned months in advance--when the Republicans were in power. Simple
political expediency would dictate that the news of a murdered child or children
be suppressed.
The news reports of the death of a child or children abruptly stopped about
March 3, and the news reports of the numbers of the dead Davidians also ceased.
Occasionally there would be a reference to the wounded who were still inside.
Recall that Mt. Carmel was implanted with sophisticated surveillance devices,
and that there were a number of informants living within the community.
Throughout March many Davidians who had been inside the Mt. Carmel Center at the
time of the raid left. Upon leaving, each was immediately interrogated by the
commandos from the Hostage Rescue Team

does that do to the 2012 AD Election in USA? What if Japan or China were

Subject: [FUTURE-CITIES] (Near) Future Education Software Market...Internet
As Marketplace.

Dear Wendy:
Further to your program last night on the "Paradox of
Free Software (eg Linux) Being Used To Make Fortunes", let me give you another example
which will soon dwarf the Linux Market. This is the market for "Educational Software"
(also "free" in the sense that it is easily obtained and at little cost if not
no-cost).
Without glossing this up in pedagogical theory let me get right to the practical
aspect of it. How many courses of an academic, scholarly nature can be put on computer
disks? (whether HDD's, CD's or floppy disks doesn't matter). The correct answer is:
MOST, IF NOT ALL, from introductory accountancy to medical anatomy. Presently there is
a huge market for over-the-internet education as recent article in Georgia Straight
informed us. We were told that about 1,000,000 US students now take courses over the
Internet and the increase is phenomenal, having tripled from 1994 to 1997.
Unexus U. in New Brunswick now offers MBA degrees 100% over-the-internet as you know.
The new dictum is: "IF IT CAN BE TAUGHT BY HUMAN OVER THE INTERNET IT CAN BE TAUGHT BY
ROBOT OVER THE INTERNET". In this case, robot just means whatever machinery it takes
to present those courses on computer disks to the students. That could be Internet or
it could be a classroom robot (I will be giving a workshop this summer at the ALIFE-7
Conference on "How To Make Xavier More Lively, Learned and Lucid Than Any Professor at
CMU").
Now the marketing experts can consider the implications of TURNING EDUCATION INTO A
COMMODITY. College courses are rather elusive. But college courses on computer disks
become a commodity as tangible as pork bellies. If the planet can have a futures
market for pork bellies, why not educational cd's? An educational cd (ECD) kind of
"stands still" for the world to scrutinize it and

1993 and appeared in the Dallas Morning News, March 1. The caption does not say
when the photograph was taken, but the presence of the ambulance and the APC
together suggests that the APC was already there at about the time of the
raid.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a
duck. Operation Trojan Horse--the code name for the Waco operation--was
planned and executed from the beginning to the end as a military action, not a
civilian action.
That is, from February 28, 1993 to the final day on April 19, 1993, Operation
Trojan Horse was a military action, and military equipment was on the scene.
The Waco Tribune-Herald,
March 1, 1993 also published a photograph of a military combat vehicle
moving into Mt. Carmel on the day of the raid.
On April 21, two days after the inferno at the Mt. Carmel Center, an Air
Force cargo plane transported the ATF agents from Waco. Thus we see that the
civilian law enforcement facade in the Waco action was thick in rhetoric but
thin in fact; from beginning to end, the US military presence was the dominant
theme.

Difference Between War and Law EnforcementWar and law enforcement have
different goals. The purpose of law enforcement is to enforce the law. Alleged
violators of the law are apprehended with only the force necessary to arrest and
deliver them to the judicial system for trial.
The purpose of war, on the other hand, is the domination of the target. It is
the job of the war machine to kill, to maim, and to destroy. The war machine
must also create terror to convince potential opponents to submit on command.
Therefore, the war machine must not only inflict maximum death and suffering on
its victims, but must also broadcast its achievements to convince others to
submit on command.
This is the story of the attack on the Branch Davidians.
For reasons that are not clear at this time, a military and intelligence
operation, with a civilian law enforcement facade, was planned against the
Branch Davidians. The complex details of the Davidians' history and lives were
woven into this facade. These details and their subplots serve to direct
attention away from the essentially military attack and extermination of the
Branch Davidians.

NATIONAL POST, Saturday, February 26, 2000

The story about Waco unravels

There is evidence that the FBI lied about what happened in Waco,
Tex., when it stormed the Branch Davidians' compound, killing
more than 80 people following a 51-day siege

Jan Cienski
National Post

WASHINGTON - For years, the U.S. government has insisted that
federal agents were following the law and did all they could to
protect human life when they ended the 51-day siege at the Branch
Davidian compound in Waco, Tex., seven years ago.

But over the past year, the government's case has been slowly
unravelling.

Now there is evidence that the FBI lied about using
military-issue tear gas, lied about a U.S. military presence at
the siege, may have violated its procedures when it stormed the
compound and may have fired at the Davidians as they tried to
escape the burning compound.

"They are unprincipled liars," said Jim Brannon, a lawyer for
some Branch Davidian families who have filed suit against the
government. "We ought to be really concerned when our highest law
enforcement agency operates little, if at all, above criminal
conduct."

From the first day, the operation against the Branch Davidians
was ill-starred.

Federal authorities decided to clamp down on the group, headed by
charismatic rocker David Koresh, because they had been told that
the church was stockpiling massive amounts of illegal weapons.
Church members insist they were selling the guns -- a legal
business for a religious group.

On Feb. 28, 1993, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms stormed Mr. Koresh's compound, a scattered collection of
buildings in the dusty sagebrush prairie outside Waco. There is
controversy over who fired first but a hail of bullets killed
four agents and six cult members.

Federal agents immediately set up an armed ring around the
Davidian compound. Over the next weeks many followers were
persuaded to leave.

The FBI ratcheted up the pressure on those remaining inside,
bombarding the compound with high-decibel music and shutting off
the power. Finally, on April 19, 1993, the FBI stormed the
compound with tanks spewing tear gas. A horrified country watched
on television as the building went up in a yellow-orange
fireball, claiming the lives of more than 80 people.

The official explanation was that the Davidians, in a suicide
pact, set fire to the compound and then shot themselves.

At the time, much of the United States was firmly behind the FBI.
A Gallup poll found that 83% of Americans approved of the
agency's actions.

For most of the siege, the hundreds of reporters gathered beyond
the FBI cordon were forced to rely on the agency's version of
what was going on inside.

Federal authorities worked hard to demonize the Davidians,
admittedly not a very difficult task for a strange little group
obsessed with the wilder sections of the Book of Revelation. Mr.
Koresh had also taken child brides, forbidden most of his
followers to have sex and was obsessed with guns.

Any positive information, such as the videotape of Mr. Koresh
playing with his family in the compound, was not released by the
FBI.

Janet Reno, the U.S. attorney-general, who is ultimately in
charge of the FBI, said she had been prompted to order the attack
by reports that Mr. Koresh was molesting children inside the
compound.

In the aftermath of the siege, several Branch Davidian members
were convicted of killing the four BATF agents.

From the first, the siege was seen by many Americans as a
botched and ill-planned operation. But suspicions over the
truthfulness of the FBI's version of events was limited to a
militant fringe.

Militia groups, which were entering their peak growth period
around that time, seized on Waco as an example of an evil federal
government out to kill its citizens in order to remove their
constitutionally guaranteed right to own weapons.

Timothy McVeigh became so incensed at the federal government's
actions that two years to the day after the end of the Waco siege
he drove a bomb-laden truck to the Alfred P. Murrah federal
building in Oklahoma City, setting off an explosion that killed
168 people.

The Oklahoma City bombing took the air out of the militia
movement and made anyone who suspected an FBI conspiracy at Waco
look like a nut. After a couple of desultory congressional
investigations, the fuss over the Branch Davidians appeared to
die down as the country moved on to the much more pressing
questions of O.J. Simpson's guilt or innocence and Monica
Lewinsky's love life.

But the quiet consensus over what happened at Waco began to break
down under the attack of two renegade researchers, Michael
McNulty and David Hardy, who disbelieved the government's story.

Mr. Hardy, an Arizona lawyer, sued to obtain documents and
evidence related to the siege and fire. Both men pushed Texas
authorities to begin an inquiry into evidence under state
control.

CLINTON-APPOINTED JUDGE SEALS TAPE OF GORE AT FUNDRAISER

Delays release of tape until after election

By Marvin Lee

Judge Paul L. Friedman has sealed a videotape of Al Gore
fundraising at a Buddhist temple, keeping it unavailable for
campaign ads targeting the Vice President's illegal fundraising
practices. The tape was the only piece of evidence the Judge
chose to withhold from the public.

Judge Friedman was appointed by President Clinton and the case
against Maria Hsia, the host of the illegal fundraising event,
was assigned to him under circumstances that are now under
investigation by Congress.

The Justice Department asked for a change of venue from Los
Angeles, where the fundraiser took place, to Washington, D.C.
where the White House controls some of the judges. Other judges,
however, have been appointed by President Reagan and are outside
control of the White House. So to retain control over the case it
would be necessary to bypass the random assignment of cases to
judges.

It now turns out that the Justice Department asked for the case
to be assigned to Judge Paul Friedman because it was "related" to
another Clinton case that had already been assigned to Friedman.
The case against Clinton fundraiser Charlie Trie had been
assigned to Friedman bypassing the rules of random assignment of
cases to avoid political favoritism by the courts.

Chief Judge Norma Holloway Johnson complied with the request for
a special assignment. In fact, the Justice Department claims that
it was her idea to begin with.

Congress is investigating. "As far as I am concerned, this
procedure is unusual, unorthodox and may be improper," said
Howard Coble, subcommittee chairman of the House Judiciary
Committee. "The subcommittee is concerned that the chief judge
may have improperly influenced the department's decision to file
a related case notice.

Paradise Lost: Can Mankind Live Without Its Utopias?
By EDWARD ROTHSTEIN

Utopia may be "no place" (as one of the word's original meanings suggests), but
when imagined, it is always some place. Just not here. It is across an ocean
(like Sir Thomas More's noplace that was the first to be called utopia), atop a
mountain (like H. G. Wells's) or in interstellar space (like the science
fiction writer Ursula K. LeGuin's).

In ``Utopia,'' Sir Thomas More envisioned there would be no private property,
much leisure and few lawyers.

The utopias philosophers imagined are just as difficult to reach, requiring a
mastery of esoteric dialogue (like Plato's) or dialectical theory (like Karl
Marx's). Paradise is glimpsed only after strenuous intellectual or physical
effort. And whoever has made the journey to alien shores brings back tales of
lands where labor has been transformed into pleasure and knotty earthly
problems are unwoven with ease. Our world, too, the story goes, could be like
this, if only . . .

And there the difficulties begin. The significance of utopias is not that they
imagine versions of perfection, but that they imagine cures for imperfection. A
utopia is not, like Peter Pan's Neverland, an impossible place; that would turn
utopianism into mere fantasy. The promise of utopia is that while seeming to be
Neverland and Noplace, it has a chance of becoming This Land and This Place.
That is why something seemingly imaginary becomes compellingly urgent.
Utopianism defines a political program; utopianism inspires progress.

But paradoxically, it also results in the opposite. Visions of utopia have led
to extraordinary horrors and nightmarish dystopias. Some have been indelibly
imagined in such fictions as "Brave New World" or "1984." Others, less
literary, have flourished in the hothouse of 20th-century expectations: suicide
cults and terrorism, Fascism and Communism. What goes absolutely wrong is the
attempt to make everything absolutely right. Dystopias are failed attempts at
utopias.

The last century has been extraordinarily rich in both attempts and failures.
So it is no surprise that studies of utopia have recently taken on a peculiar
urgency. Last year, Russell Jacoby's "End of Utopia" (Basic) mourned the death
of the utopian spirit and the weaknesses of contemporary liberalism. Routledge
recently published "The Utopia Reader," an extensive anthology edited by
Gregory Claeys and Lyman Tower Sargent, with readings ranging from Hesiod to
Huxley. Another anthology of utopian writings has just been published in
England ("The Faber Book of Utopias").

Next fall, the New York Public Library, in collaboration with the Bibliotheque
Nationale de France, plans an exhibition of 400 utopian manuscripts, maps,
images and other materials from the two libraries' collections. The exhibition
will open in France this summer and in New York in October. Here, it will be
accompanied by three public lectures on utopianism, to be published by Oxford
University Press (full disclosure: I am delivering one of them).

A Society for Utopian Studies (http:// www.utoronto.ca/utopia), founded in
1975, also publishes a journal, Utopian Studies, in which such essays as
"Primitivism in Feminist Utopias," "Lewis Carroll as Crypto-Utopian" and
"California as Dystopia" have appeared. The Internet, which has itself been the
object of many great utopian hopes, offers an array of sites with utopian
aspirations, some of them collected at users.erols.com/jonwill/utopialist.htm.

But considering that these are visions of paradise, it is astonishing how few
one would feel comfortable living in. Only those who look for utopia in the
distant, irretrievable past find an unambiguous glow. Ovid recalls a Golden Age
in which rivers flowed with nectar and honey dripped from green trees,
providing a pastoral ideal that survived for over a millennium. More's 16th-
century "Utopia" has a more modern forthrightness about it: no private
property, much leisure and few lawyers -- a fantasy that has proved remarkably
enduring. But there are hints of satire in some of More's imaginings, and
darker intimations that some utopian things one "may rather wish for than hope
after."

Edward Bellamy, a 19th-century Massachusetts journalist, wrote what has
probably been the most popular utopian vision ever created, "Looking Backward:
2000-1887." A reform movement was based on its ideas, but this world, too,
seems unpleasant. His hero awakens in the year 2000 from a 113-year sleep,
finding a government that is an all-powerful corporation; citizens divide all
profits equally while answering to the strict military discipline of an
"industrial army." The year 2000 was also imagined by H. G. Wells in his 1901
book "Anticipations;" it is an enlightened era in which "whole

U.S. CONGRESSIONAL RECORD,
Thursday, June 15, 1933 (legislative day of Wednesday, June 14)
HON. LOUIS T. McFADDEN OF PENNSYLVANIA:
"FINANCIAL INTERESTS SHOULD NOT DICTATE FOREIGN POLICY OF UNITED STATES
GOVERNMENT"

Mr. McFADDEN. Mr. Speaker, I doubt if the history of the relations between
this country and Russia is known to every American citizen. It may not be
considered amiss, therefore, if I dwell for a few moments on our past
relations with that strange and interesting country. To do so it will be
necessary for me to go back to the late eighties and the early nineties of
the last century, when the United States was turning the corner and becoming
rich and powerful. At that time a man named Jacob Schiff came to this country
as the agent of certain foreign money lenders. His mission was to get control
of American railroads. This man was a Jew. He was the son of a rabbi. He was
born in one of the Rothschilds' houses in Frankfort, Germany. He was a small
fellow with a pleasant face and, if I remember correctly, his eyes were blue.
At an early age he set out from Frankfort to seek his fortune and went to
Hamburg, Germany. At Hamburg he entered the Warburg banking establishment.
The Warburgs of Hamburg are bankers of long standing, with branches in
Amsterdam and Sweden. After Schiff had served his time with them he went to
London and worked with their London correspondents. He was also connected
with the firm of Samuel Montagu Co., the London gold merchants. When he
came to this country he was well equipped to do business as an international
money changer. He knew how to be polite, he could write a smooth letter, and
he always pretended to be a man of holiness and a philanthropist.

Sometime before Schiff's arrival there was a firm of Jewish peddlers or
merchants in Lafayette, Ind., by the name of Kuhn Loeb. I think they were
there about 1850. Probably they made money out of the new settlers who passed
through Indiana on their way to the Northwest. This firm of Jews had finally
moved to New York and had set themselves up as private bankers and had grown
rich. Jacob Schiff married Teresa Loeb and became the head of Kuhn, Loeb
Co. Schiff made a great deal of money here for himself and for the Jewish
money lenders of London. He began to give orders to Presidents almost as a
matter of course. He appears to have been a man who would stop at nothing to
gain his own ends. I do not blame him for being a Jew. I blame him for being
a trouble maker.

Russia had a powerful enemy in this man, Jacob Schiff. The people of the
United States were taught to believe that this enmity of his was caused by
wrongs done to Russian Jews. I look elsewhere for the motives which animated
him.

In the 1890's Schiff was the agent in this country of Ernest Cassell and
other London money lenders. These money lenders were looking forward to a war
between England and Russia and were making preparations for propaganda
designed to support England in the United States. This country was then a
debtor nation, paying a high yearly tribute to Schiff and his principals.
Schiff accordingly took it upon himself to create a prejudice in the United
States against Russia. He did this by presenting the supposed wrongs of the
Russian Jews to the American public. Unpleasant tales began to appear in
print. School children in this country were told that Jewish children were
crippled for life by Russian soldiers wielding the knout. By unfair means a
wedge was driven between Russia and the United States.

One of Schiff's schemes was a sort of wholesale importation of Russian Jews
into the United States. He drew up divers and sundry regulations for the
temporary transplantation of these Jewish emigrants. He would not, he said,
have them enter this country through the port of New York, because they might
like New York too well to leave it for the outposts he had selected for them.
He said it would be best to have them come in at New Orleans and to have them
stay there 2 weeks, "so that they could pick up a few words of English and
get a little money" before setting off for what he called the "American
hinterland." How they were to get the money he did not say.

Aided by Schiff and his associates, many Russian Jews came to this country
about that time and were naturalized here. A number of these naturalized Jews
then returned to Russia. Upon their return to that country, they immediately
claimed exemption there from the regulations of domicile imposed on Jews;
that is, they claimed the right to live on purely Russian soil because they
were American citizens, or "Yankee" Jews. Disorders occurred and were
exploited in the American press. Riots and bombings and assassinations, for
which somebody furnished money, took place. The perpetrators of these
outrages appear to have been shielded by powerful financial interests. While
this was going on in Russia, a shameless campaign of lying was conducted

HOW THEY USE OUR FOREIGN POLICY
To the vast majority of Americans our Foreign Policy is a complete enigma.
Most of us simply cannot understand why this great nation is floundering so
(seemingly) helplessly in the art of diplomacy. We cannot understand why our
leaders are (seemingly) so confused and bewildered in all their dealings with
Moscow. We always hear them proclaiming that in view of our overwhelming
economic and military superiority we must always "lead from strength." Yet,
in all the Summit Meetings and Conferences they cringe and stammer and
stutter and, so to speak, come out with their tails between their hind legs.
We cannot understand the Foreign Aid to Tito, an avowed enemy - to Poland, an
avowed enemy - to all the avowed communist nations. We cannot understand why
the expenditure of scores of billions of dollars has failed to slow down, let
alone stop, the march of communism. We are perplexed by the (seeming)
ineptness of the State Department - of the CIA - of the USIA - of All our
Federal Agencies.. Again and again and again we have been startled, shocked,
horrified by their mistakes in Berlin, in Korea, in Laos, in Viet Nam, in
Katanga, in Cuba... mistakes that always favor the Enemy - never the United
States! Under the law of averages they should have made at least one or two
mistakes in our favor - but they never did... What is the answer?

The answer is that no one can really understand our Foreign Relations until
one knows the parts played by such organizations as the Council of Foreign
Relations (CFR), the Foreign Policy Associations (FPA), the World Affairs
Councils (WAC, the notorious American For Democratic Action and similar
organizations.

Earlier I established with prima facie evidence how the masterminds (Schiff,
et al) financed the take-over of Russia and fashioned its Communist regime
into becoming their chief instrument to keep the world in turmoil, and to
finally terrorize all of us into seeking PEACE in a One-World Government!
However the masterminds knew that Moscow could not become such an instrument
until and unless the whole world would accept that communist regime as the
legitimate (de jure) government of Russia. Only one thing could accomplish
that: Recognition by the United States the world would follow our lead.

Throughout the three US Republican Administrations that followed Wilson the
Masterminds pulled every trick in their bag to induce Harding, Coolidge and
Hoover to grant that Recognition, but to no avail. As a result, beginning in
the mid-1920's, the Stalin regime was in dire straits. Despite all the purges
and secret police controls the Russian people were growing more and more
restive. It is a matter of record, admitted by Litvinov, that during 1931 and
1932 Stalin and his whole gang were always packed and ready for instant
flight.

Then, in November 1932, the masterminds achieved their greatest coup: they
landed Franklin D. Roosevelt in the White House. Crafty, unscrupulous,
utterly without conscience, he turned the trick for them: without even asking
consent of Congress, he unlawfully, proclaimed "Recognition" for the Stalin
regime. That did it! Automatically, the whole world did follow our lead -
automatically, that squelched the previously growing resistance movement of
the Russian people...automatically, that launched the greatest menace the
civilized world has ever known.

SAVING STALIN AND COMMUNISM
We know how FDR and his corrupt State Department kept building up the
Communist menace right here in our own country - and, thus throughout the
world... We know how his Black Widow of Hyde Park maneuvered our Immigration
authorities to admit known Communist spies and saboteurs, such as the
Eislers... We know how she provided her First Lady prestige to every vicious,
traitorous Red Front during her years in the White House, that she even
allowed her protege, Joe Lash, to use the White House for his Young Communist
activities... We also know how that charlatan (FDR) perpetrated that Pearl
Harbour atrocity to hurl us into World War II, to once again save Stalin and
Communism! We know all that, and we also know how he (with the aid of
Eisenhower) delivered the Balkans and Berlin to Moscow, and last, but not
least, that he not only dragged us into that new corridor (the United
Nations) to a One-World Gevernment, but actually schemed all the arrangements
to plant it within our country.

From the day Roosevelt stepped into the White House the masterminds came into
full control of our Foreign Policy, and believe you me, they've made (and are
making) frightening progress with it. The betrayal of Chiang Kai Shek and
delivery of China to the Reds was accomplished in the name of Foreign
Relations Policy... ditto the murder of Mihailovitch and the delivery of
Yugoslavia to Tito... ditto Hungary, Cuba, Katanga... ditto The Marshall Plan
(Foreign Aid Plot), which is draining us of all our wealth and

I am advised that about two-thirds of the delegates will be
selected from states that do NOT have open primaries, i.e.
the bulk of the GOP delegates will be selected by Republicans.
Interesting how the states that DO have open primaries wound

if the stodgy old Republicans make a mistake and vote
incorrectly, the Democrats -- whose delegates are selected at
the stroke of midnight in a smokefilled room by party hacks --
and "independents" can correct the error and have a shot at
setting the trend for the long haul.

Subject: [LeadingEdgeResearch] Replacing Judgment and Victimhood

When Discernment and Insight Replace Judgment and Victim Consciousness
Within the blessing of education, the proliferation of broadcast
communication and the printed word for the distribution of knowledge lies
the problem of discerning what is of value and what is deliberately placed
within these sources to mislead and misinform. Herein is the next level of
understanding that discernment as to what is appropriate and true must be
applied to all input. Within each is the source of such guidance. The
ability to tap into this wisdom is present within all and latent within
most. The lessons in learning to discern what is appropriate and what is not
are many and frustrating. For most, these are trial and error with
difficulty in figuring out what purpose experience serves in life. Once the
concept of discernment is understood, it is learning to use this important
tool that is at the basis of many of life's trials. It then becomes a useful
tool that enhances experiencing knowledge into wisdom.
It is to be understood that discernment is a tool that replaces what has
been called judgment. Each can then release the self-deprecation that comes
from "judging" self and others as being right or wrong. Discernment is an
internal process that eliminates looking outside of one's self for the cause
of the seemingly difficult experiences that plague the human life. The
dictionary lists "insight" as an appropriate synonym. Discernment can be
applied in a before or after mode. It is wise to consult one's inner
feelings carefully before undertaking an experience. It can be further
applied in retrospect to understand what lesson can be gleaned from an
experience that is happening or has happened. Unless a lesson is learned, it
is likely to be repeated until it is "discerned." Then a realization of what
the intended lesson is/was happens within the understanding of the
individual or group.
The practice of discernment is part of the application of the Law of
Allowance. To consider the appropriateness of an undertaking in either the
before, during or after mode requires a letting go of the emotions involved
in the experience so that the logic of it can be considered. This may be an
on going process of consideration before the totality of the lesson is
gained. Even partial understanding and realization of its purpose in the
totality of the life experience allows for greater knowledge to become
wisdom which in turn allows the individual to apply this and change their
pattern of expression to include different possibilities. In order to
consider the situation and its circumstances there is a letting go that is
necessary in order to allow the mind to consider the possibilities of the
who, what, why and how of the total picture. If there is considerable open
mindedness, possible scenarios can be played out in order to determine the
greatest number of possibilities. Through this process, the more logical
meanings become clear. Through this release needed solutions often become
accessible because the mind has been allowed to reach inward to access the
available wisdom from within. Each has a storehouse of available wisdom that
is obtainable through the practice of discernment. There must be a desire to
lift personal experience out of the daily morass of pointless repetition,
judgment and blame.
In order to shed the victim consciousness the individual must be willing to
turn their view of life from looking outside for the cause of situations and
circumstances to looking inside for the causes that invoke what the Law of
Attraction has brought into experience. These causes are to be found within
attitudes, opinions and self-talk, for the mind is speaking within in a
constant flow of chatter. Within this internal conversation are the keys to
many of the patterns of thought and behavior that set up the situations and
circumstances that are being experienced. Changing these patterns that are
the basis for the creation of the life pattern is not a simple task, but a
good beginning can be made with the awareness that it all begins with
discernment. The world does not just happen to anyone. It is invited through
the Law of Attraction, for like attracts like. A victim attitude draws not
only fellow victims into ones life, but also abusers to provide the victim
experience. As each begins to accept the responsibility that the cause is
within their own pattern of experience, and are willing to accept this idea,
then the practice of discernment is possible.
The discerning individual will find it necessary to logically assess their
attitudes and opinions. Are they judgmental and blaming of others? Are there
always reasons that the

Press Release

February 27, 2000--Los Angeles,Ca.

"In Search of the American Drug Lords"

MadCowProductions announces the release on video of a new TV documentary
that could affect voter's decisions in the Presidential contest of the
year 2000...answering questions that the Whitewater probe ducked that
have been dogging America since the Mena drug scandal broke.

Could Barry Seal really have been involved with everyone from Republican
Attorney General Ed Meese... to Democratic National Chairman Charles
Manatt... to Al Gore's current campaign chairman, Tony Coelho?

What is the suspicious link between Barry Seal and the Boss' Son, George
W. Bush?

"In Search if the American Drug Lords," is filled with eyewitness
testimony and startling revelations from a 3-year long investigation
into the life and times of Barry Seal, at one and the same time the most
successful drug smuggler in American history as well as one of the most
famous CIA agents who ever lived.

Through delving into the beginnings of Seal's lifelong career in
American 'clandestine services' in New Orleans during the intrigue
surrounding the Bay of Pigs and the Kennedy Assassination, we have been
able to get answers to some of the persistent question abroad in America
today:

Could the assassinations and scandals of the 60's and 70's be somehow
related to cocaine epidemic that devastated America in the 1980's,
fueled in no small part by the billions of dollars' worth of cocaine
brought into this country by the most successful drug smuggler in
American history, Barry Seal?

Was Barry Seal--called by the Wall Street Journal "the ghost haunting
the Whitewater probe"--just an extraordinarily-zealous entrepeneur
operating all by himself?

Did the big-time "players" in the small backward state of Arkansas
--Bill Clinton, Vince Foster, Jackson Stephens, Jim Blair, Don
Tyson--stand idly by while Seal made billions importing tons of cocaine
through Mena?

Or... might the "goings-on in Mena, Arkansas" of Barry and 'the boys'
have been just the continuation of 'business as usual?'

Shot on location in Louisiana, where Barry Seal lived and worked, "In
Search of the American Drug Lords" offers an extraordinary kind of oral
history from almost a dozen members of the tight-knit pilot's fraternity
of Louisiana who knew and worked with Barry Seal.

The story of Barry Seal is the story of what happens when guys we pay to
protect us--CIA guys--go into business with guys we're paying them to
protect us against. "Made" guys. Mobsters...Organized Crime.

Commenting on the CIA's affair with the Mafia, L.B.J.'s press secretary,
Bill Moyers said, "Once we decide that anything goes, anything can come
home to haunt us."

After you see "In Search of the American Drug Lords," you'll understand
what he meant.

28Feb00 - Bilderberg 2000 to be in Swizerland 1st to 4th June?

According to the Vienna Newspaper "KURIER" , Friday, 25th February 2000 due
to the participation of the FPÖ (Jörg Haider) Party in the government, the
"Bilderberg" meeting will not be in Austria on 1st to 4th June but in
Switzerland. The date will probably be the same since it will be difficult
for such a lot of important people to change their timetable.
The newspaper continues and explains that Bill Clinton will participate as
well as the NATO Secretary General George Robertson. Minister for Northern
Ireland and Blair clone Peter Mandelson, EU-Commissioner Pedro Solbes. The
CEO of Monsanto, Xerox and Goldman-Sachs and Fiat-Boss Agnelli. The editors
of Washington Post and Economist will attend but not (as usual) mention the
fact in their respective publications.
Etienne Davignon, the new Bilderberg Chairman will preside.
In the beginning of 1985 Davignon joined Société Générale de Belgique,
Belgium's leading holding company of which he became Chairman on the 11th
April 1989. Mr. Davignon is a member of the Board of the Générale de
Banque, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux, BASF, ICL, Solvay, Kissinger Associates
and several S.G.B. group companies. He became Chairman of the Association
for the Monetary Union of Europe on May 30, 1991. As member of the European
Round Table of Industrialists (ERT), he chairs the working group on Trade
and Investment. He is a Chairman of the Paul-Henri Spaak Foundation and the
Royal Institute for International Relations. Pictures of James Wolfensohn
(Worldbank), Carld Bildt (UN - Special envoy to former Yugoslavia ???),
Jean-Claude Trichet (Vicepresident of European Central Bank) and Norbert
Zimmermann (Berndorf Company - Austria). It later declares that last year
in Portugal there was ex-Chancellor Franz Vranitzky and Director General of
Bank Austria: Gerhard Randa. It further states that the "Bilderbergers"
meet once a year in a hotel. The talks are not made public, which has given
the Bilderbergers the reputation of being a secret society. In reality real
powerful people speak three days on the future of the world in all
frankness but why not for the press? The meeting can be compared to the
meeting in Davos only much more secretive and with the highest players in
global capitalism involved. The greater discretion allows the participating
politicians and economic captains to even speak more frankly with each
others on subjects which, if heard by the general public could be explosive!
The newspaper is lamenting that due to the new Austrian government also
other meetings especially the meeting of the European Investmentbank (the
EU house-bank) most probably will not be in Vienna.

What are these Bilderberg Conferences all about?

TG 08Feb00 - The Bilderberg Secretariat proclaims the conferences to be
'...private in order to encourage frank and open discussion'. Frank and
open discussion is a good thing in any forum but when those doing the
discussing are some of the very most powerful financiers and media tycoons
in the world it begs the question: If what they discuss is for the good of
mankind why not publicise it!  Isn't it a perverted use of the word 'open'
when no-one can hear what they're saying?

Is Bilderberg a secret conspiracy?

When such rich and powerful people meet up in secret, with military
intelligence managing their security, with hardly a whisper escaping of
what goes on inside, people are right to be suspicious. But the true power
of Bilderberg comes from the fact that participants are in a bubble, sealed
off from reality and the devastating implications on the ground of the
black-science economic solutions on the table. The world's leading
financiers and foreign policy strategists don't get together at Bilderberg
to draw up their secret plans for the future. It's subtler than that. These
meetings

In a message dated 2/25/00 2:09:12 PM Eastern Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Like some occult teachers, Tolkien got the idea to his masterpiece after he
had been wounded in the first World War. He didn't know from where he got
 the
idea, it just "came to him". Many occultists have had the same experience -
some strange power just channeling through them ... Another thing is,
 Tolkien
was a professor in Oxford, which is ruled by the Illuminati. Question: was
Tolkien a part of the Brotherhood in some degree? Did he know the occult
technology, or is everything just a coincidence? He himself said he used
parts of the Beowulf saga and the old Icelandic myths, but that doesn't
  explain everything.

Well, once again some isolated bits of knowledge come to the fore. In
Occultist circles the idea that someone just gets something, or it "just
comes to them", is illumination and it can be viewed in a number of ways. I
believe that some of what we see in the highly artistic (including all good
writers, artists, sculptors, etc.) is a tapping of a collective unconscious,
or higher mental current, which gives them the idea for such inspired
creation (or expands on an inate ability if you prefer that view). I believe
that some of these people are directed, in some cases by "higher ups" who
have the ability to channel that current to some extent. I believe that some
of what we see produced as art is in fact "manufactured" in order to have an
effect on society as a whole. Tolkien is just one of a long list of people
who had their ideas "just come to them", or to have "dreamt" them. Lovecraft
was another one, who got his ideas from dreams. Interestingly Lovecraft
"came up with" Cthulhu and the whole mythos bit (expanded on many times since
his death in '37). An idea in his stories and those of his
followers/emulators is that Cthulhu waits dreaming, dead, but not dead. His
dreams blanket the earth but only the "sensitive" can pick them up. Those
dreams then cause changes in the persons mind and their art reflects this.
Cthulhus dreams deal with his ultimate re-emergence at some unspecified
future time "when the stars are right". It seems this parallels a great deal
the idea of occultism in general and would seem to be a blueprint to
influencing humanity along a particular track of evolution (if you will) to
reach an unspecified time when the stars are right and something incredible
happens to us, or with us, or what have you.
Some of this strain of creative genius is undoubtedly just a byproduct of the
minds of gifted people, but when I see these little similarities it causes me
to wonder if Cthulhu, or Manwe, or whoever, is not "out there" somewhere
directing the sensitive towards an ultimate time or event. The sensitive
have a greater effect on society than the average joe after all. Good cause
for speculating and good cause for making those connections. . .whether
imaginary or not.

BIG ISSUE - BIG SPLASH ON BILDERBERG

The Big Issue is Britain's best-seling street newspaper. It is appropriate
that someone should have chosen to leak details of this secret sabbat at
the altar of Capitalism through a network of their most sorry victims, the
 homeless.

As Tony Blair's government continues to implement budget-led policies that
fulfil the internationalist wishes of the City of London his mask is
wearing thin... It will be interesting to see if broadsheet columnists can
see through it too. Or are our newspapers, as Bilderberg critics would
have us believe, merely there to convey an illusion of choice? I faxed all
the details of this year's Bilderberg summit direct to Hugo Young at the
Guardian back in June - not a pip-squeak of a mention, nor even a reply.
Still, not all media are quite so blind to the facts.

 http://www.bigissue.com
The Big Issue - on sale on the street all over Britain - price ú1.00 (55p
 goes to homeless vendor).

The edition that contains this story will be on sale until this weekend -
follow-up story in next week's edition.

It is crucial that we all break the taboo on this elite cabal. They offer
many answers to what seems a confounding inability of present-day
politicians to either stick to manifesto pledges or show any substantive
differences in policy from the other major political parties.

The fact is the government is in ever-increasing debt to the money masters
(see http://www.themoneymasters.com) and as we all know 'the borrower is
servant to the lender' Proverbs 22:7

If there were the political will to subvert the private bankers by
cancelling debt and returning the issuance of currency to the treasury,
where it rightfully belongs, our public-spending problems would be solved.
Unfortunately both our mainstream media and our mainstream political
parties seem unable to consider the one solution which could relieve
poverty right across the world. If you want to find out more about who
controls money and how it is rooted in a fraud do check out 'The Money
 Masters' video/audio tapes and book.

Kennedy.
Ca
se Closed was given a huge publicity build-up and, when released, Posner
was
allotted more public appearances on major media outlets than any author in
recent memory, save Seymour Hersh in 1997. In the meantime, Posner has
become
a regular name at publications like the New York Times and Time magazine.
In
the latter publication, early last year, the first announcements came that
Posner was at work on a book on the King assassination. No surprise, it was
timed to appear at the time of the thirtieth anniversary of King’s murder.
Although Posner did not get quite as big a launch this time as before, he
still appeared with Dan Rather on 48 Hours (3/24/98), and had a large
spread
in Newsweek (4/6/98). The latter was interesting in that it coupled an
excerpt from Posner’s book with rather unenthusiastic articles about King’s
legacy and the lives and characters of his children. The phenomenon that
Probe
detailed about the JFK assassination—a posthumous character attack to go
with a cover-up about the original murder—was now transmuted and
crystallized
in the MLK case.
Killing the Dream is pretty much drawn from the same mold as Case Closed

.
Posner shows the same type of "convict at any cost" attitude, the same
quoting of clearly biased resources, the same use of character
assassination
on the supposed perpetrator, the same heavy-handed maneuvering of the
evidence to rig the deck.
This included
the
supposedly liberal Marc Cooper of the Los Angeles Pacifica outlet, KPFK.
Shockingly, or not, two of the featured voices on National Public Radio on
the thirtieth anniversary of King’s death were Posner and Robert Blakey.

How single-minded is single-minded? In an interview in the San Jose Mercury
Ne
ws (4/26/98), reporter Jeff Guinn asked Posner if Ray had actually killed
King. Posner’s answer was, to put it lightly, untouched with ambiguity:
"There is no question. Ray was the shooter. That’s how I see the evidence,
how anybody objective has to see the evidence." Posner went on to use
Robert
Blakey’s HSCA version of a motive, the Ray brothers were after a $50,000
bounty put up by a St. Louis racist. As Bill Pepper and others have noted
it
is odd that, if this was the motive, there exists no evidence to indicate
that Ray or his brothers tried to collect the money. Another oddity here is
that one of the people who Posner thanks in his book is none other than
David
Lifton. Back in 1977, Lifton, with Jeff Cohen, wrote an article for New
Times. It (rather weakly) postulated Ray as a racist and his brother Jerry
Ray as a co-conspirator in a rightwing plot. This article caught the eye of
Blakey and the HSCA and Lifton’s ideas ended up influencing the final
product
of their Final Report. Posner acknowledges that his debt to Lifton is a bit
odd, but makes no more of it than that. We wonder what Lifton would think
of
another comment from that interview which is a pure Posnerism:

The murders of Martin Luther King and John Kennedy did not do justice to
the
status of the victims. Many people want something meatier to lend extra
weight to how they died. In each case, a conspiracy does that nicely. Look,
the facts are that King and Kennedy were killed by sociopathic
losersThere were no intricate assassination plots. None.

Such metaphysical certainty from a man who writes about scouring the
Toronto
Sun newspaper for mentions of Ray in 1967 when that newspaper did not exist
until 1971. Ditto for

HOUSE COMMITTEE TO HOLD PRIVACY HEARINGS
BARR OBTAINS COMMITMENT FROM GOVERNMENT REFORM
WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Representative Bob Barr (GA-7) announced today House
Government Reform and Oversight Committee Chairman Dan Burton (R-IN) has
agreed to hold hearings this fall on government surveillance programs, such
as the National Security Agency's reported "Project Echelon." On several
occasions, Barr has expressed concerns that both foreign and domestic
surveillance operations may be violating the privacy rights of American
citizens.

Earlier this year, Barr successfully amended the FY 2000 Foreign
Intelligence Authorization Act to require the Department of Justice, the
National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency to submit to
Congress a report detailing the legal standards the agencies use when they
eavesdrop on American citizens. A similar amendment has also been passed by
the United States Senate.

Barr's concerns were prompted by news reports indicating a system known as
Project Echelon is conducting massive interception of the private phone
calls, e-mails, faxes and data transmissions of American citizens.

"As advances make information much easier to acquire, store, and search, we
must make absolutely certain our legal structure develops in tandem with our
technological infrastructure. More importantly, Congress must remain
vigilant in ensuring government agencies adhere to existing laws governing
surveillance activities. These hearings will help reassure the American
public this is a responsibility Congress takes seriously," said Barr.

Barr, a former United States Attorney, serves on the House Banking,
Government Reform, and Judiciary Committees.

Kris, I never cease to be amazed at the endless sh*tload of agency
propaganda manufactured and projected into and through the media at every
level, almost all of which is never read, seen, heard or even noticed(its
best labelled as "misinformation to the Nth degree" or a massive collection
of self-serving, obvious lies).

This endless supply JFK "oswald the lonegunman "doed it", the "mafia gone
doed it", etc. etc. sh*t is some of the very worst misinformation ever
produced--it is embarrassingly bad, just as the misinformation ops you have
identified herein are so absurb they should be a total embarrassment to any
agency and the perps themselves should be too embarrassed to go out in
public especially at any jfk assassination conferences (even the ones they
put on which is most of them!).

When over 80% of the literate population believes that the "U.S. Govt done
doed it" (in agreement with our Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura's excellent
statement published in Playboy Magazine), why would these agencies continue
to pay big bucks to pump out this continual line of low level patently
absurd misinformational sewage "ad infinitum" and "ad nauseum"? What
agency officials continue to authorize this sh*t and administer these large
scale and expensive perpetual misinformations schemata?

Answer: Officials in ns*, ci*, di*, fb*, jcs, and their "proprietary
agencies (whackem'out, scroll associates, to mention a couple), as part
and parcel of a large scale and long term special joint task force
classified "above top secret", sci (special compartmentalized info--formerly
umbra). Many covert researchers know their names and pseudonames, or at
least the names of those managing and working at high levels in the
proprietaries.

Why do agents and operatives participate in these absurd and alarmingly
immoral and profoundly low level misinformation programs?

Answer: to undermine our constitution, bill of rights and judicial system
by generating cognitive dissonance in the masses by repetitively force
feeding the public misinformation they learn to live with, teaching them
that they can and will tolerate a corrupt gov't that leaves them alone as
long as they tolerate the b.s. and act like the "king has new clothes"!
(it's called low intensity warfare). That's right folks the war is at home
here against the citizens and that means you and I and all of us.

Remember, all govt misinformation ops are special multi-jurisdictional task
forces, especially the perpetual, ongoing ones. All mjtf are required to
operate by special regulations requiring, financing, planning, operations
command, operations, communication, media ops, undercover infiltrations with
playing the target roles and taking one's hits to elicit a valid legend
(legend-making), false flag ops, honeypot ops, changing one's mind and
becoming the usefull idiot ops, etc., etc., etc.etc. etc. etc. Once certain
mjtf ops have been set in motion with perpetual financing (especially if
they are set up as a privatized proprietary agency) they function like a
regular corporate law firm or corporate business into perpetuity, serving as
"retirement jobs" for those retiring from agencies (based on the close
working relations they formed with those proprietaries over the years).
These mjtf agency and proprietary ops take on a life of their own even after
their "founding fathers" have died, since they function like any other
corporate entity, providing jobs and cover for lots of ex-covert operator
"bad boys" who are no longer needed or wanted in normal agnecie of govt.
They have truly become institutional and their need for ongoing income and
work continues just as before they left their agencies.

False Witness: Aptly Titled

By Jim DiEugenio and Bill Davy

Following on the heels of Gus Russo’s Live By the Sword, another propaganda
tract has been published. False Witness, by Patricia Lambert, is a hit
piece
on Jim Garrison and Oliver Stone. Curiously, Lambert formerly went under
the
name Patricia Billings. We can’t help but wonder if she was related in some
manner to Dick Billings, the Time-LIFE journalist who actively worked to
undermine Garrison’s case, and who had strong ties to the CIA.

George W. Bush's bus is hurtling through the night, heading for one more
rally on the eve of another primary. Already on this day, the Texas governor
and Republican presidential candidate has done two network early-
morning shows, a round-table discussion, four radio shows, three rallies, an
interview with Dan Rather and four satellite feeds. He also lifted weights
and ran five miles on a treadmill. ``I tell people this is the process to show
whether I've got what it takes to be your president,'' he says, sitting next to
his wife, Laura, on a black banquette in the front of the bus. He is slowly,
almost imperceptibly, sliding deeper into the cushions, his only sign of
weariness.

Bush's advisers are strategizing in the back room of the bus while Bush
talks with yet another journalist up front. The stiff-armed, winking, grinning
candidate delivering packaged bromides at rallies is gone. The self-
satisfied debater is gone. Bush is as gracious and likable as a man who
had been voted head cheerleader at Andover prep school and fraternity
president at Yale, whose favorite TV show is ESPN's ``Inside Baseball''
and who, during takeoffs on the campaign plane, delights in the
schoolboyish ritual of rolling an orange down the aisle from his first-row
seat past reporters to see if he can reach the back of the plane.

Despite the lightly veiled references to a wilder side in his younger days,
Bush seems to live the traditional sort of life he preaches. He calls home
every night from the road. He refuses to use his 18-year- old twin daughters
to boost his campaign. He reads four newspapers a day but watches little
television. He writes thank-you notes by the dozens.

He loves grass fields and wooden bats in baseball, and when he was
managing partner of the Texas Rangers, he alone among 28 owners voted
against interleague play and the wild-card playoffs.

``Baseball's a marathon,'' he says about the wild card. ``We shouldn't be
rewarding second-place finishers.''

``As you can tell,'' Laura teases, ``he's very persuasive. He didn't get any of
the other owners to vote with him.''

Bush smiles, then sees an opening for weaving in a political message. ``I'll
tell you this: I went down fighting for principle. I didn't take a poll to figure out
how I should vote.''

Several times during the interview, he tells me I've asked the wrong
question from the wrong perspective, and finally I offer him my notebook
and suggest we skip the middleman and let him interview himself. He
laughs and answers everything anyway, reframing questions to reflect his
own point of view. When I ask him to articulate what he loves about public
office, for example, he turns the question around.

``I don't love the office,'' he says emphatically. ``I love my country. I believe
I've got some talents that will help achieve certain objectives that will make
America a better place, like keeping the peace, like improving education,
like keeping the economy going. And I have a vision for America that will
usher in the Responsibility Era.

``Loving the office, to me, connotes, you know, strutting around like, `I am
the governor. II am the governor.' ''

CANDIDATE OR PASSENGER?

As the darkened fields and factories and homes roll by the bus windows,
and Bush's careful political packaging begins to loosen, the candidate
shows conviction and compassion around certain issues that, in his public
appearances, often come off as hollow posturing. But he also seems like a
boy riding a bus not so much because he has his mind set on a particular
destination, but because this happened to be the bus that came along.

In other words, for someone who speaks so forcefully of helping Americans
fulfill their dreams, he seems to have had none of his own.

``I've never been one to worry about what my next endeavor would be,'' he
acknowledges, sucking on hard candies to save his voice. ``Somebody
asked me once, `What are you going to do after governor?' I said, `I don't
know.' I'm not the least bit worried about it, either, I want you to know.

``When I went to Harvard Business School in 1973, I just went. I didn't have
a game plan. . . . A few months into my last year, someone asked, `What
are you going to do?' I said, `I dunno.' But I knew what I wasn't going to do. I
wasn't going to Wall Street. I wasn't there to compete. I wasn't there to try to
pad my resume.''

He ended up stopping at his boyhood town, Midland, Texas, on his way to
visit a friend in Tucson, Ariz., and decided to stay. ``I started a little
company and things went well,'' he says. ``It's the nature of my life.''

It seems not to occur to Bush as he says this that he sounds

The good, the bad and the Dubya

In front of a group of potential voters on AOL's stage, George W. Bush is a happy
moderate. But standing before reporters he's transformed into an angry attack dog.

Feb. 26, 2000 | DULLES, Va. -- Maybe there are two George W. Bushes -- the
good Dubya and the bad Dubya. If so, both showed up Friday at America Online
headquarters here in the Texas governor's first-ever national online chat. First the
good Bush fielded questions from an online audience estimated at 30,000 and a
hundred employees of the online giant.

There weren't many softballs from this crowd. AOL's director of political
programming, Kathleen deLaski, served as host inquisitor, relaying e-mailed
questions to the seated, relaxed governor on topics ranging from negative
campaigning to gun control. Inquiries from the AOL staff covered suburban sprawl,
terrorism, the death penalty and China policy.

Bush took it all like a champ, giving coherent answers that hit the themes that once
(pre-South Carolina) made his candidacy so attractive to moderates. He reminded
the crowd that he's "a uniter, not a divider," talked about "lifting the spirit" of the
American electorate, and revived his recurring line that "I'm running because I want
the American dream to touch every willing heart." Education in general, and
minority education in particular, was worked into nearly every response, even one
about traffic patterns.

When John McCain's name came up during the chat, Bush was downright courtly.
He backed off his recent slams against the Arizona senator and described the
negative campaigning as part of the rough-and-tumble business of politics. He also
repeated his refusal to talk about McCain "or anyone" for a vice presidential slot
while the race was in progress. "It is insulting for me to try to turn the conversation
to John McCain as a running mate when he is a viable candidate to be president."
Many in the crowd nodded approvingly.

In fact, the governor seemed successful in winning over the pack of mostly 30-
something Net-izens who work at AOL. They rewarded him with vigorous applause
and a polite standing ovation once the event was over. Autograph hounds impeded
Bush's progress toward the door, while other members of the audience said that
Bush did "quite well" and showed "a great deal of respect for John McCain."

Even those who were not in his corner were impressed. "I still haven't decided
whether I'll vote for him," said Andrew Cohen, a life-long Democrat who planned to
support Gore in the general election. Cohen said he'll vote in the upcoming Virginia
GOP primary, not to make mischief, but because "the country should have the best
two qualified candidates to chose from." He came into the event with a positive yet
skeptical view of Bush shared by more than a few of his co-workers. He left saying
that he "would be hard pressed to give a reason for voting against Bush" on Feb.
29.

It was easy to see why. This was the pre-Michigan, perhaps even the pre-Iowa
Bush on display before the AOL staff. The governor was charming and poised,
poked fun at himself, and seemed relieved to renew the bright and sunny tone of
his early campaign. Whether talking about his dearly departed cat, his father's
recent hospitalization or defending his daughters against the glare of the campaign
spotlight, Bush never lost the crowd, sounding moderate, prepared and rather
presidential throughout.

This abruptly ended, however, at the "press availability" afterward. By now, all the
smiling voters were gone, and the bad Bush suddenly came back with a
vengeance. The governor unceasingly bad-mouthed John McCain, sniped at a
reporter who refused to politely accept his dodge on the abortion issue and turned
testy after one too many Bob Jones questions. "I'm going to be their president,"
Bush said in defense of his visit to the controversial university, dropping the awh-
shucks humility that characterized his chat performance. "Of course I'm going to
talk to them."

After he continued to be pressed on Bob Jones, its anti-Catholic rhetoric and its
ban on interracial dating, Bush stumbled. "I denounce interracial dating," he said
twice before correcting himself. The governor then tried to make the case that he
declared his opposition to the policy during the visit, but eventually admitted that he
had only said something after he had left. Bush also tried to turn the question of
anti-
Catholicism back on McCain, denouncing phone calls made by the senator's
campaign in Michigan highlighting that aspect of the Bob Jones story.

"I reject the politics of guilt by association," Bush thundered. This is his campaign's
new catch-all line of defense against bigot eruptions, covering Pat Robertson's
South Carolina phone calls against McCain ally Warren Rudman, the

GOP explores possibility of dual results in California primary

By SCOTT LINDLAW

SACRAMENTO (February 26, 2000 2:54 p.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - Republican Party officials and the political
world are now pondering a once-unthinkable scenario: What happens if
John McCain wins the popular vote in California, but George W. Bush
captures more GOP votes and is declared the victor?

Such conflicting outcomes are possible in the California primary March 7.
Elections officials will report dual results: Voters who stick with their party
as well as all voters, including "crossover" Democrats who vote for
Republicans, and vice versa.

In keeping with its rules, the Republican Party will ignore the latter count of
all voters. It will award delegates to its nominating convention based on
which candidate wins the most Republican votes.

Non-Republicans helped carry McCain to victories in New Hampshire and
Michigan, while core GOP voters have gravitated to Bush.

If that trend repeats itself in California, where polls show McCain surging,
Bush could take all the state's delegates with a win among GOP voters,
while losing the total vote. California's 162 delegates are the largest prize
in the nominating season.

So when the Republican National Committee convened a conference call
for reporters Friday to discuss its rules, one topic dominated: Could the
party ignore its own rules and hand the delegates to McCain if he won the
popular election, but lost among Republicans?

Highly unlikely, RNC officials say.

McCain could file a challenge to the election results, said a top RNC
official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The party's contest committee would consider evidence in the challenge,
vote, and then send its findings to the full RNC, which would rule when it
meets the week before the convention.

If McCain lost the challenge, he could appeal to another panel - the
credentials committee. That appeal could wind up before the full convention
in Philadelphia this July.

However, McCain and Bush have both signed affidavits pledging not to
challenge the primary's results, said Jon Fleischman, executive director of
the California GOP.

There will be 2,066 delegates at the convention. If a majority approves, they
could vote to toss the 162 delegates pledged to Bush, and replace them
with McCain delegates, RNC officials say.

ANALYSIS: Bush still optimistic, but aides, GOP strategists
worried about McCain

By MURIEL DOBBIN, Nando Washington Bureau

DULLES, Va. (February 26, 2000 2:00 a.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - While GOP front-runner George W. Bush
proclaimed his optimism about the storm clouds gathering over his
presidential campaign as he heads into the most critical phase of the
primary season, aides and Republican strategists admitted that they are
seriously worried about John McCain.

Making a quick stop Friday in Virginia, a conservative base where he is
expected to sweep Tuesday's primary, Bush spent much of a press
conference alternating between explaining that McCain's success was
based on his temporary appeal to Democrats who would eventually vote for
Vice President Al Gore, and radiating confidence about his chances in the
upcoming slew of primaries from Virginia to Washington state, California,
New York and Ohio.

"I never thought this would be easy," Bush said. "It's hard, very hard. But it's
a marathon race. I feel great, and I'm enjoying it."

But at times his jovial mood became snappish, as when he reprimanded a
reporter for "butting in when I'm just pausing in what I'm saying."

However, Republican officials and insiders disputed Bush's contention that
McCain was succeeding only because of mischief-making Democrats who
tilted the recent Michigan primary vote, and his belief that McCain would fail
in his drive to add Republicans to his independent followers.

They warned that a primary danger posed by the Arizona senator was his
successful claim to the role of outsider and reformer that once formed the
base of the Texas governor's candidacy.

A California Republican official, speaking on condition of anonymity,
warned that the combination of Bush's once-formidable campaign war
chest and his overwhelming support by the party hierarchy had turned him
into the candidate of the establishment. The worst possible scenario facing
Bush, suggested the official, was that as a result of the state's voting rules,
McCain would win the popular vote in California's March 7 primary while
the Texan captured the Republican vote and the delegates.

That, the official suggested, might lead not only to "a public-relations
disaster for the Republicans" but to a potential conflict over seating at the
GOP national convention in Philadelphia.

Another official, Barbara Alby, a Republican National Committeewoman in
California, warned, "California is very tough. The magic of McCain is that
he has come to represent the anti-status quo and the nonestablishment. He
has managed to annex that territory. Bush's people aren't pushing him out
on the stump enough, and his strength in the party has made him vulnerable
to a charge of being establishment."

In another warning sign for Bush, there has grown what New Hampshire
Republican strategist Tom Rath called "a gnawing sense of unease"
behind the scenes about the outcome of March 7, "Super Tuesday," when
GOP voters in a dozen states - including California and New York - hold
primaries and caucuses.

A few months ago, Rath said, it was the conventional wisdom that Bush
would cap a triumphal march to the nomination by sweeping to victory over
the next few weeks in states where more than 1,000 delegates are at
stake.

That was before the specter of McCain began to haunt Bush, before his
defeats in the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries. It was also before
Bush campaign funds slipped from $70 million to $10 million, arousing
complaints by Republicans about his wasting money on McCain territory
like the Arizona primary, which Bush lost by a wide margin Tuesday.

"The trouble was that the McCain phenomenon was allowed to fester and
take root in New Hampshire," said Rath. "The Bush people let McCain
become 'Saint John,' and that's what he still is."

He noted that Bush had the consolation of successes in Iowa, Delaware
and South Carolina, as well as statistics indicating that had Democrats not
entered the Michigan race on the side of McCain, the Texan would have
won.

"Bush shouldn't panic," said Rath. "But he has to recapture the focus."

The GOP still has a heavy commitment to Bush, Rath said.

"Bush is the candidate the party has invested in," he said. "But every time
he doesn't put McCain away in a primary, it's trouble."

Steve Duprey, Republican state chairman in New Hampshire, said, "This
has become a wide-open race between an organized establishment
candidate and a momentum candidate. The challenge to Bush is to show
he can get independents as well as Republicans. If McCain has any
success in his pursuit of Republicans, that could be a problem."

Duprey added that Bush was right in calling the race a marathon, but he
noted that until a few weeks ago it was a marathon expected to be wound
up by the primaries of March.

"If it's not over by

WASHINGTON (November 16, 1999 10:11 a.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - The son and grandson of Navy admirals,
John Sydney McCain was destined for a military career from the word go.
His calling in the world of politics seemed less obvious.

"I don't think my grandfather or my father ever voted," McCain said of his
namesakes. "They were both very apolitical."

Both men believed that "democracies were ruined by military officers
getting into politics," said McCain's brother, Joe McCain. That left the two
boys, who also have a sister, to feed their interest from the family's political
junkie, their mother, a true-blue Republican who "watches and reads more
news than John and I put together."

"He and I and mother used to spend I-don't-know how many hours at the
dinner table arguing about politics and history," said Joe McCain, a free-
lance writer. They dissected legislation. Sometimes, they spoke of "what
mistakes historians made" or about the current economy.

"We were all basically on the same side of the fence," the younger McCain
said, "but it was like Talmudic scholars arguing about a single word or an
adjective."

Now with young children of his own, John McCain is the one trying to
distance politics from his family. But as a presidential candidate struggling
to surface from a deep pool of Republican hopefuls, the task has become
increasingly difficult. His wife, the millionaire daughter of an Arizona beer
baron, had avoided the Washington social scene but now frequents the
campaign trail with her husband. Eventually joining them will be their four
children, plucked from their ranch-style Phoenix home where they have
known very little of the nomadic lifestyle that McCain experienced as a
Navy brat.

The paradox is among many for this 63-year-old Arizona senator, a father
and husband who has kept his personal life private and yet has centered
his campaign around his outspoken personality.

Dubbed a maverick for his habit of butting heads with fellow Republicans,
McCain has enjoyed a high profile existence in Washington as the
chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. Outside the Beltway,
however, he has to introduce himself to Americans more familiar with
names like Bush and Dole.

McCain spent more than 20 years in the Navy, a quarter of it in a
Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. On Oct. 26, 1967, his jet was shot down
over Hanoi during a bombing mission. He broke both arms and shattered a
shoulder and a knee while ejecting from the aircraft. When he landed, he
was pulled from a lake by a North Vietnamese mob that stabbed him with
bayonets.

McCain was beaten repeatedly for the next 5 1/2 years. When his captors
learned he was the son of a prominent Navy admiral, they offered to
release him early. McCain refused to go along with what he saw as a
propaganda ploy, and he insisted that soldiers captured before him leave
first.

The war story is a central theme in his campaign, one featured prominently
in ads and videotapes. But McCain insists he gets "bored stiff" talking
about it.

Since the day he returned, McCain said, "people wanted to paint myself as
a person who performed heroic acts, which I know not to be true."

Earlier this year, McCain mocked his war hero image at Washington's
Gridiron Club dinner, taking to the stage in a jacket crammed with phony
ribbons and medals. The event was a chance to show that Vietnam does
not cast on shadow on all his thoughts or actions, and is far from the
defining moment in his life, he said.

"Yes, it's part of my legend but it is not necessarily a compelling argument
for me to be president," McCain. "In fact, all it does is warrant a
consideration."

He said the defining factor will be when voters decide whether he has the
vision and the principles to lead the country into the next century.

McCain's vision revolves around one word: reform. Reforming the
government, Social Security, the education system, the tax code, the
military and, of course, the way political campaigns are financed.

Though his voting record shows him to be consistent with his GOP
colleagues, McCain has a reputation for bucking the party line, particularly
on issues like campaign finance reform and

tobacco legislation. While a freshman House member, McCain stood up to
a political hero, Ronald Reagan, and voted against sending Marines to
Lebanon.

Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas fought bitterly with the Arizona senator over
tobacco tax and campaign finance.

"John McCain has been willing to stand up and fight on issues that he truly
believes in when there's been tremendous peer group pressure to shut up
and get out of the way," said Gramm, whose brief 1996 presidential stint
was led by McCain. "I have seen him do it

 The new space invaders
 Spies in the sky

 Peter Goodspeed, National Post

For decades they were guardians -- mysterious warriors who straddled the
globe searching for secrets that would prevent a nuclear holocaust. But now,
the new technology of the post-Cold War world has suddenly transformed
the West's leading spymasters into sinister shadows manipulating a massive
surveillance system that can capture and study every telephone call, fax and
e-mail message sent anywhere in the world.

These high-tech espionage agents from Canada, the United States, Britain,
Australia and New Zealand -- backed up by a web of ships, planes and radar
and communication interception sites that ring the earth -- have established
the greatest spy network in history. Its name is Echelon.

Originally devoted solely to monitoring the military and diplomatic
communications of the Soviet Union and its East Bloc allies, today Echelon
searches for hints of terrorist plots, drug-dealer's plans and political and
diplomatic intelligence. But critics claim the system is also being used for crass
commercial theft and a brutal invasion of privacy on a staggering scale.

On Tuesday, the European Union's parliament will open a major
international debate on the spy practices of the world's five leading
English-speaking nations, claiming that this electronic espionage ring, led
by the United States and Britain, is methodically going where it has no right
to go. The EU's civil liberties committee is expected to accuse Britain of aiding
the United States in conducting economic and commercial espionage on a
grand scale at the expense of its European partners. A special 112-page
expose of the spy network prepared for the EU last spring declares that the
rapid proliferation of surveillance technologies presents "a serious
threat to the civil liberties in Europe" with "awesome implications."

"There is wide-ranging evidence indicating that major governments
are routinely utilizing communications intelligence to provide
commercial advantage to companies and trade," declared Duncan
Campbell, the report's author, a Scottish physicist and researcher
who has devoted 20 years to studying electronic espionage.

Moreover, research about to be released by the EU's Scientific and
Technical Options Assessment office is expected to document how
deeply Echelon has penetrated Europe. It will outline ways to
 combat the espionage assault.

 At the same time:

 - Jean-Pierre Millet, a Parisian lawyer, has launched a class-action
lawsuit against the governments of the United States and Britain,
claiming the Echelon spy network has robbed European industries
of some of their most cherished trade secrets and undercut their
 bargaining positions in trade deals.

 - Parliamentarians in Italy, Germany and Denmark are demanding
public investigations of the spy network.

 - Privacy advocates in the U.S. have launched a court case
demanding access to government documents on Echelon under the
 Freedom of Information Act.

 - Several leading politicians are calling for the first Congressional
hearings to review U.S. intelligence-gathering practices since the
 Watergate era.

 - On the Internet, privacy advocates, computer hackers and
journalists are engaged in near-hysterical searches for signs of
Echelon's presence. Several new Internet Web sites have sprung up
devoted solely to documenting information on Echelon and pressing
for public investigations into the surveillance system.

"Echelon is a black box, and we really don't know what is inside it,"
says Barry Steinhardt, of the American Civil Liberties Union. "We
don't know who is being targeted, what they are being targeted for
or what is being done with the information."

The Echelon system is simple in design. All members of the
English-speaking alliance are part of the UKUSA intelligence
alliance that has maintained ties since the Second World War.
These states have positioned electronic-intercept stations and
deep-space satellites to capture all satellite, microwave, cellular and
fibre-optic communications traffic. The captured signals are then
processed through a series of supercomputers, known as
dictionaries, that are programmed to search each communication for
targeted addresses, words, phrases or even individual voices.

Individual states in the UKUSA alliance are assigned responsibilities
for monitoring different parts of the globe. Canada's main task used
to be monitoring northern portions of the former Soviet Union and

Global eavesdroppers: calls by Diana were intercepted by a
worldwide monitoring network said to include Menwith Hill in
Yorkshire. The consortium building Tornado fighter planes and
Mark Thatcher were also targeted in the operation

Spy agencies listened in on Diana

By Nick Fielding and Duncan Campbell

SPY agencies in Britain and America eavesdropped on Diana,
Princess of Wales and Mark Thatcher, son of the former prime
minister, as part of a global system of monitoring
communications, according to former intelligence officials.

Calls by Diana were picked up because of her international
charity work; Thatcher's calls surfaced in the monitoring of
British arms deals with Saudi Arabia.

The officials also revealed that charities such as Amnesty
International, Christian Aid and Greenpeace were secretly spied
on. Overseas targets have even included the Vatican: messages
sent by the Pope and the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta have been
intercepted, read and passed on to Whitehall intelligence
officers, the sources say.

Codenamed Echelon, the monitoring system is part of a worldwide
network of listening stations capable of processing millions of
messages an hour. At least 10 Echelon stations operate around the
world. Canada, Australia and New Zealand participate, as well as
Britain and the United States.

Former intelligence officials have spoken out after a decision by
the European parliament to launch an inquiry into Echelon's
operations. Officially, the British and American governments
continue to deny the network's existence.

Wayne Madsen, who worked for 20 years at America's National
Security Agency (NSA) and other agencies, said last week:
"Anybody who is politically active will eventually end up on the
NSA's radar screen."

Charities operating overseas are monitored because they often
have access to details about controversial regimes. Amnesty was a
particular target in the late 1980s, sources said. According to
Madsen, "undisclosed material held in US government files on
Princess Diana was collected because of her work with the
international campaign to ban landmines".

The NSA, a former insider has revealed, has also targeted
communications concerning British military sales to Saudi Arabia
in the 1980s.

Its monitoring intercepted communications sent by Thatcher, who
was then involved in the giant al-Yamamah arms contract between
Britain and Saudi Arabia. The NSA also eavesdropped on the
Panavia consortium, which builds the Tornado fighter aircraft.
British Aerospace is one of the main partners in the consortium.

"I just think of Echelon as a great vacuum cleaner in the sky
which sucks everything up," said Mike Frost, a former Canadian
intelligence officer. "We just get to look at the goodies."

Frost, who retired in 1992 after 20 years' service, has also
revealed that Canada's equivalent of GCHQ was used by Margaret
Thatcher to monitor two cabinet colleagues. "She wanted to find
out not what they were saying," Frost said, "but what they were
thinking."

The ultra-secret operation was conducted from an office at
Macdonald House in Grosvenor Square, central London, which houses
the Canadian high commission. According to Frost, Canadian spies
were asked by GCHQ to undertake the operation because it was too
politically sensitive for GCHQ to do itself. After spending three
weeks tapping the ministers' communications, the Canadian officer
who led the operation drove to GCHQ and handed over the tapes.

Margaret Newsham, an American computer software manager who
worked during the 1980s at the giant listening station at Menwith
Hill in Yorkshire, confirmed last week: "I was aware that massive
security violations were taking place. If these systems were for
combating drugs or terrorism, that would be fine. But not for use
in spying on individuals."

Newsham says she was invited to listen in on an American
senator's intercepted phone call at Menwith Hill. Later she
informed Congress about her experiences. "It was evident American
constitutional laws had been broken," she said.

Avenues of redress for those targeted by Echelon are few. The
Sunday Times has established that a loophole in the 1985
Interception of Communication Act means intelligence officials
can put individuals and organisations under surveillance without
a specific ministerial warrant. Section 3 (2) of the act,
governing interception of communications going to, through or
from Britain, allows entire classes of communication to be
monitored.

Keith,

Regardless of your 'dirt' on Ted Sampley, I think this is of interest and
agrees with the film I viewed as well as the CNN commentator's analysis,
and his assertion that Bush's father had admonished him to bail out rather
than risk getting killed or seriously injured, or something to that effect. But
you probably have some dirt of him, or CNN. That's fine. I just question what
is dirt and what is obfuscation and an attempt to redirect criticism. Bush
and Co. (incl. CIA and associated Companies) are VERY POWERFUL.

Steve

By Ted Sampley
March/April/May 1997

Former President George Bush, who bailed out of a crippled Navy Avenger
bomber 53 years ago, jumped again in March of this year. His World War II
jump is historic. It made Bush the only president to ever bail out of an
airplane and the only president whose crew mates were sent careening
into the ocean because their pilot had abandoned the aircraft.

Accompanied by eight Golden Knights from the Army Precision
Parachuting Team and a civilian from the U.S. Parachute Association,
Bush's second jump was less eventful and historic. After leaping from a
civilian twin-engine airplane at 12,500 feet with two jump masters holding
onto his harness, Bush fell until he deployed his parachute at 4,500 feet.

A half a dozen people--including his wife Barbara--rushed to help cushion
his landing. Medical emergency personnel were also standing by on the
ground. Bush landed about 40 yards from his target at the Army's Yuma
Proving Ground, the sprawling base where the Golden Knights train eight
weeks a year.

When the 72-year-old former chief executive was asked how he felt, he
gave a thumbs up. "It was wonderful. I'm a new man--and I go home
exhilarated," he said. "There's a lot of things about my previous incarnation
that I do not miss, but I do miss the military," Bush later told base
employees.

Prior to the jump, Jim McGrath, Bush's assistant, had said "The reasons
behind this [the jump] are strictly personal, . . . It has to do with World War
II."

Those cryptic remarks give rise to speculation that Bush may have been,
as The London Times put it, "Trying to exorcise demons from his earlier
jump, the circumstances of which flared up into controversy during Bush's
presidential campaign.

In a 1987 account of the World War II incident, which differed from his
earlier versions, Bush told about the incident on television. He claimed that
during a bombing run against a Japanese radio installation on ChiChi
Island, his plane was hit and engulfed in flames and that he ordered his
crew to bail out. He said one did, but his parachute failed. Bush claimed
the other crewman did not answer the intercom, so he assumed that the
crewman was critically wounded or dead.

Bush, who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for action prior to
the crash, said that even though the plane was in flames, he managed to fly
it on to the target and drop his bombs before he bailed out. Bush admitted,
however, that in his rush to get out of the Avenger, he pulled the parachute
rip cord too quickly and was gashed on his forehead when he hit the tail of
the plane.

Bush's Betrayal

Chester Mierzejewski, an old war buddy of Bush, who said he was angered
by the "false assertions" made by candidate Bush when describing the
incident, gave a different account.

After 44 years of silence, Mierzejewski, who also was awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross, told the New York Post that Bush had
abandoned his crew to death when there was another choice.

He said he was approximately 100 feet in front of Bush's plane as the turret
gunner for Squadron Commander Douglas Melvin's plane, "so close he
could see in the cockpit" of Bush's bomber. Mierzejewski's close wartime
buddy was one of the two crew members in Bush's plane.

According to Mierzejewski, the squadron was in a tight-formation bombing
raid against a Japanese radio installation on an island reported to be
heavily fortified. He saw "a puff of smoke" come from Bush's plane which
quickly disappeared and was certain only one man parachuted from the
plane and that it was Bush, the pilot.

Mierzejewski said the Avenger torpedo bomber was engineered so that it
could successfully crash land on water and that Bush doomed his own crew
by bailing out and leaving the bomber out of control.

Other World War II veterans also expressed concern about Bush
parachuting out of the aircraft. "He had a moral obligation to put that plane
in the water in an emergency landing," Robert Flood, a former B-17
bombardier told the press. "He violated the primary rule for a captain of a
multi-crew aircraft: The pilot never leaves the airplane with anybody in it."

Pete Brandon, a Marine Corps Avenger pilot, who also served in the South
Pacific, said an Avenger pilot had two choices: Set the plane down in the
water or hold it steady until the two crewmen could prepare to jump.

I am glad McCain is rich and
not poor because if he was poor he could nevereven run in a

I don't hold the sins of Cindy's

I became a McCain fanatic
right before he won Michigan, primarily because of Bush's negative and whiny ads
and my growing perception of Bush as negative and whiny. The fact that
Robertson Co. then bothered to come out against him was also telling to me
as I believe heis sort of an honorary Iluminist and the others his

JOHN MCCAIN: AMERICA'S BEST HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

NEW YORK Republicans go to the polls one week from Tuesday to help nominate a
candidate for president of the United States. The question before them will be
this: Who is best equipped to restore dignity to the White House after two
terms of Clintonian sleaze, corruption and moral delinquency?

We believe that man to be John McCain.

On the critical issues facing America at home and abroad - and on personal
character, the linchpin issue of this campaign - we believe that McCain
represents the nation's best hope for the future.

And so, we enthusiastically endorse his candidacy in the March 7 primary. Not
since Ronald Reagan has a leader so resonated with the American public. His
candidacy is igniting genuine excitement across the political spectrum.

Yes, the Arizona senator has bucked his own party on some important issues. But
even those who disagree with him on policy do not question his integrity.

John McCain is the antithesis of the president he seeks to succeed.

His GOP rival, George Bush, brings much merit to the race: As governor, he has
led the education-reform movement in Texas, forcefully advocating vouchers and
charter schools; he has aggressively implemented welfare and tort reform. He's
also been a model of political outreach, convincing longtime Democratic voters -
particularly minorities - to support his gubernatorial campaigns.

But Bush has no record on foreign policy and national security, and what few
positions he has advanced in those areas have been tentative and ill-defined.
Sen. McCain, by contrast, is one of the most respected voices on Capitol Hill.

In his 18 years in Congress, McCain has told uncomfortable truths about the
state of America's military readiness - or lack of it - and he speaks
eloquently on the need for a commanding U.S. presence in world affairs.
Few in Washington have been as articulate as McCain in standing up to what he
terms the "strategic incoherence and self-doubt" that have defined U.S. foreign
policy under Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

Clinton's foreign policy, McCain rightly notes, can be defined as "a mystifying
uncertainty about how to act in a world where we are the only superpower." The
result: a seven-year-long stumble from one foreign embarrassment to another.

Significantly, the senator also warns against the blind, head-in-the-sand
isolationism advocated by some in his own party. He is not afraid to advocate
the use of force: When North Korea began to rattle its nuclear sabers, for
example, McCain called for sanctions - to be backed, if necessary, by U.S.
airstrikes.

But he is not reckless. He warns that "force has a role in, but is no
substitute for, diplomacy . . . . All means short of force must be employed
first."

This is in line with his overall approach to foreign policy: Support for a
strategic defense and a willingness to honestly and openly confront rogue
regimes that threaten world stability.

Domestically, McCain generally stands four-square with the Republican agenda.
He favors protecting Social Security by taking it "off budget" - meaning that
its surpluses would not be used for unrelated spending or for fiscal gimmickry
by masking the size of the deficit. He favors tax cuts and doubling the child
tax credit.

On education, he favors school choice and a nationwide test of school vouchers -
but, unlike Al Gore and Bill Bradley, McCain believes that Washington's proper
role consists solely of providing "a bully pulpit for better educational
performance nationwide." He calls partial-birth abortion "an abomination," and
voted to override

One Party Politics

As I write this, I’ve just finished watching three absolutely disgusting
fawners, trucklers, toadies, sycophants, boot-lickers, -- I can’t think
of enough bad adjectives — fronting as mouthpieces for their “One
Party.”

The three kept men are commentators Fred Barnes, Morton Kondracke, and
Tony Snow on Fox News Networks’ Brit Hume report. All of them agreed
that 1) Jesse Venura’s exit from the Reform Part meant nothing; 2) the
Reform Party will mean nothing in the upcoming election because people
are so “happy” because of the economy (you see, we are all primarily
economic animals, just like Karl Marx said, according to these
charlatans!); 3) McCain is the only person left running with the
“reform” message; 4) and, needless to say, these three Party Operatives
didn’t mention Howard Phillips or the Constitution Party.

In the paragraphs that follow, I’m coming at a concept we’ve already
visited -- but from a new angle. This one concept is of such paramount
importance because it reveals the motive behind votefraud, and must
else. Billions of dollars are at stake in the 2000 election, and you
don’t think that the “world rulers of this darkness” are intending to
give up their power just because the people vote their puppets out, do
you?

The “One Party” I am talking about is the Permanent Revolution/Monopoly
Capitalist/Trotskyite Communist Party. This is the Party which stands
behind the Republican and Democratic Parties AND the five major TV
networks, to say nothing of the Federal Reserve Board, as we’ve stated a
few times before. (Permanent Revolution was the term that Trotsky and
his comrades used to describe the financial power and idea behind
Communism.)

The reason these “One Party” mouthpieces are so eager to throw kudos to
McCain is that, because of his war record and time as a POW, he
represents on February 13, 2000, the Permanent Revolution’s best hope —
in the current sorry field of establishment major party candidates – to
generate some enthusiasm amongst the naïve members of the public.

The “One Party” desperately needs to keep a President in office who will
follow Clinton in continuing to rubber stamp a selective deregulation
which leads to mega-mergers so as to facilitate the ongoing “lightening
speed” consolidation of each important sphere of American industry under
3 or 4 mega-corporations per sphere, — which corporations just happen to
all be allied with, and totally in favor of, the New World Order
government. This consolidation is being done through mergers. That’s
what the Time Warner – AOL merger was about. That’s what the CBS-Viacom
merger was all about.

That’s what the gobbling up of small banks by a few mega-banks is all
about (check the news in your area; last week in Cincinnati a local
institution of long standing, Centennial Bank, was gobbled up by Carl
Lindner’s very huge Provident Bank — this trend is happening everywhere;
it’s said we’ll have all local banks associated with two or three
mega-banks by this year’s end, or next.).

THIS was the original goal of the Trotzkyite communists – and Trotzky
was fronting for the Central Bankers of his day, and was even married to
one of their daughters.

The bloody persecution which became synonymous with Communism was
necessary to break up the Old Order of Europe and China, but was never
the final goal.

We are living and watching the hoped-for final phase, which was signaled
with the Big Media approved “fall of communism” and the tearing down of
the Berlin Wall. We are now under extreme economic warfare from Alan
Greenspans and their non-famous backers, not in the sense that we live
in abject poverty, but in the sense that we are being saddled in
perpetual national debt, perpetual personal debt for most of us, and
perpetually unnecessary high taxes amidst the nearly unlimited
productive capacity made possible by our people’s know-how and modern
technology. These evil central bankers are skimming much of the cream
off the top to determine the direction of the whole world.

All this is easily solved by taking the money power out of the hands of
the secretive Federal Reserve Bankers, and returning it to the light of
day under honest leaders.

Furthermore, the Ruling Elite absolutely demands, if they get their way,
that the successor to Clinton must continue the “free trade” policies
which Karl Marx said was necessary to eradicate nationhood. At this

Hillary Backs Off Over Shooting

"I took care of Waco, but maybe I'm not ready for New York."

HILLARY CLINTON is facing political embarrassment over calls for Washington
to prosecute four white New York City policemen cleared of shooting an
innocent black immigrant 19 times outside his home.

Black activists and civil rights organisations will be seeking the backing of
Mrs Clinton, who is running for the United States senate in New York, to
begin a fresh prosecution of the men under federal law.

Before the trial, she described the killing of the West African street vendor
Amadou Diallo as "murder". She has since tried to distance herself from the
case. In a statement issued after Friday's verdict, Mrs Clinton called the
shooting a "terrible tragedy" and concluded: "We must all work together
towards the day when all citizens and all police treat each other with mutual
respect."

Her statement was in stark contrast to the anger expressed by many activists
over the trial which took place in Albany, a city two hours north of the
Bronx, where Mr Diallo lived. The Rev Al Sharpton, who led a civil
disobedience campaign and is a potential key Democratic supporter of Mrs
Clinton, attacked the trial venue, saying there was "no chance of real
justice".

In contrast, Rudi Giuliani, the Mayor of New York, who is likely to run for
the Republicans against Mrs Clinton, said it was "an eminently fair trial".
Mrs Clinton, who trails Mr Giuliani in the polls, is anxious not be drawn
into the controversy surrounding the death of Mr Diallo.

The 22-year-old was attempting to take out his wallet, which police mistook
for a gun. They fired 41 bullets and he was hit 19 times. The US Justice
Department has said it will examine the case, and the officers could be
prosecuted for violating Mr Diallo's civil rights.
