flowing from a Russian nuclear complex in Siberia at levels higher than
would come from 10,000 commercial nuclear reactors, U.S. and Russian
groups said Wednesday.
"We were shocked at the levels of contamination," said Tom Carpenter,
director of the Government Accountability Project's office in Seattle, Wash.,
who helped conduct tests of water in the Tom and Romashka rivers.
The groups reported evidence that pollution from the Siberian Chemical
Complex constitutes the largest nuclear river contamination anywhere in the
world. They demanded an immediate end to dumping of nuclear waste
from the complex, site of secret nuclear weapons development during the
Soviet years and where an explosion spread radioactivity in 1993.
Carpenter said in an interview that levels were too high to have originated
at a nuclear power plant or normal reprocessing activities and suggested
the possible presence at the site of an unacknowledged nuclear weapons-
grade reactor or giant nuclear accelerator.
The exact source of the radioactivity was not determined during testing in
August by environmentalists from the U.S. group and the Siberian
Scientists for Global Responsibility, he said. The Government
Accountability Project is a nongovernmental legal and environmental group
that watches the nuclear industry and defends nuclear whistle-blowers. The
Siberian group is a nongovernmental organization that monitors nuclear
pollution.
Calling the radioactive problem "out of rational control," the groups also
urged the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria, to send
an emergency response team to cordon off areas of high contamination
and determine the level of danger to humans from food contamination.
Carpenter said scientists took samples in areas of cattle-grazing and
fishing. He showed a picture of fish that registered with levels of
radioactivity more than 20 times normal and said it would be harmful if it
was eaten.
The analyses showed strontium 90 in plant life along the Romashka River
of 10,000 picocuries per liter, the report said. The permissible level for U.S.
drinking water is 8 per liter. Dangerous levels of phosphorus 32 also were
found, it said.
"The magnitude of the reported ... release of beta radioactivity to River
Tom is staggering," the report said, many times greater than other known
nuclear pollution problems in Russia or pollution of the Columbia River from
the Hanford, Wash., nuclear reservation.
The conclusions were based on laboratory examination of samples
conducted in Russia, Canada and the United States, Carpenter said.
Findings were presented at a news conference by Carpenter and Norm
Buske, a physicist and oceanographer with the watchdog group who said
the nuclear waste was being "straight-piped" into the environment.
"This has not been done anywhere in the world since the Cold War," Buske
said.
Local residents call the Siberian complex "the largest and greatest nuclear
facility in the world." During Soviet times it featured five nuclear reactors
and produced weapons-grade plutonium. Two nuclear reactors continue to
produce electrical power for surrounding communities, but they could not
account for the extreme radiation levels, Buske said.

-Caveat Lector- I am a survivor of many pedophiles and your statement saying that the police thoroughly investigate this type of activity. I can see that your remark is from a person who has never been abused. Abused or not, sex abuse and pedophilia is one of the worst criminal acts that a lot is dismissed. Besides, some of the pedophiles are known people. The system has never worked for any victim much. The attorneys are trying to get it on a criminal account too with yet no such luck. This same shrink years ago had a patient die under his care and he was written up only for lack of care and gave 10 years probation for other things he did. But he still got to practice!!! Another Collection agency wants to garnish wages after I bought medical supplies from a vetrinary supply house on a credit card in order to perform surgurey on severe secondary infections from burns I recieved from implanted electrodes. Before I did the surgurey I was denied any medical assistance and was suggested to agree I had a mental problem which I did not have. I was denied disability from Social Security and told although I had cysts dripping yellow fluid requiring active Drainage from these wounds and had to engage in Razor surgurey I had no disabling physical condition. If these paedophiles are openly operating in your town, surely this supposed Operation Clydesdale would have targeted them for termination before they rushed off to Eastern Europe to kill some paedophiles there. Paedophilia is a terrible crime, but it should be looked at in perspective. People get very emotional about it but there are worse crimes, legally, such as: Murder, Treason, Attempted Murder. This is the type of book I love to read! When I ran across this I had
to buy it right away, and I am sure glad I did! This
book details some of the mysterious ways of eccentric inventor and
electrical genius, Nikola Tesla.
Tesla, who is best known for inventing the AC motor and AC current,
is considered by many to be one of the greatest
minds of all time - but unfortunately, he died almost broke and has
been largely forgotten. Because of his financial
troubles, boxes of his research papers, notes and other items were
auctioned off after his death. Much of this important
work has been lost. However, some boxes have turned up over the
years, giving a fascinating look at the private life of
this incredible man.
After his death in 1942, Tesla was legally declared the real inventor
of radio (Marconi used Tesla's patents for his radio
experiments). In 1899, Tesla received strange radio signals on his
experimental radio receiver, years later, Tesla told
the press that he was certain that he was receiving radio broadcasts
from other planets. Because of this, Tesla started
experimenting with free energy devices, antigravity using high
voltage electricity, and weapons that could be used
against a possible alien threat. All this came long before the
interest in extraterrestrials and UFOs starting in 1947.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in UFOs, life on Mars,

The Clinton/Gore Administration is very much hoping things will quiet down at least for a few days to get through the election. Gore still hopes to squeak through, take over the White House, and continue to protect the secrets and legacy of Clinton. The election timing also explains why American forces throughout the Middle East region are on highest alert trying to prevent anything else from happening before November 7th. And the image that there is still hope for some kind of Israeli-Palestinian "deal", with Barak and Arafat coming to Washington mid-month, is also one that well serves both Gore and Hillary in the days immediately ahead. These two articles help sum up major developments yesterday in Israel and Palestine: THREE ISRAELI SOLDIERS KILLED AS MORE BATTLES RAGE By Phil Reeves in Bethlehem The Independent - 2 November 2000: The shadows were beginning to lengthen yesterday when the percussion of heavy machine-gun fire began to bounce through the low hills and valleys that surround Bethlehem. This was not a routine exchange the low-level fire-fight that happens every day as Israelis and Palestinians try to resolve on the ground the issues they could not settle round a negotiating table. Another kind of battle had begun, not only here but across the occupied territories. By the end of the day three Israeli soldiers and six Palestinians were dead. There was a flash and plume of dust from a Palestinian marble factory that stands above a grove of olive trees, as a missile slammed into its side. An Israeli helicopter hung above the rooftops, west of the mosques and churches of central Bethlehem, including the Church of the Nativity, built over the cave where Christ is said to have been born. A few months ago thousands of Western pilgrims filed in to kneel and kiss the holy spot. Now it is on the edge of a war; now the place really needs the prayers. The guns banged away heavy machine-guns answered by automatic weapons, accompanied every now and then by a deep slamming noise, which sounded like tanks firing. It came from around the apartment blocks of Gilo, the Jewish settlement built on occupied Arab land which the Israelis see as a neighbourhood of south Jerusalem. It came from Beit Jala, the old Christian Palestinian village which tumbles down the hillside opposite and where the Tanzim militia mostly Muslims appear to have opened a front in their war with Israel. And the gunfire came from el-Khadr, another Arab town on Bethlehem's western edge. Perhaps this was where it all started yesterday. The Israelis said two infantrymen were killed after being ambushed by Palestinian militias. Even beforehand the army had an operation aimed at crushing the Palestinian gunmen. The next stage will be worse. Israeli sources say paratroopers will flood into the zone over the next week to suppress the uprising. The third Israeli soldier was killed at a settlement near Jericho, prompting the army to fire tank shells into the West Bank town. Eight soldiers have been lost in the past five weeks including two killed by a Palestinian mob in Ramallah. The latest deaths are unlikely to go unpunished. The politically enfeebled Ehud Barak, the Israeli Prime Minister, cannot afford to do otherwise.

What is really scary is how this gives the police the right to conduct all sorts of searches/seizures/asset forfeiture/helicopter searches of property/dogs sniffing and anything else they can think up to do to the public at large without concern if actual drugs are even involved. I believe her husband is still being held in a foreign jail but have not been following that lately. Please also note that this refers to an 1985 action-not today. This would have been long disbanded and no longer in operation. It could not possible target a pedophile ring today as some of the members are jailed, dead, etc. I do not understand what is worse than this--you list several things such as murder but how is that different/worse than being killed in a "snuff movie" as that is murder, too, isn't it? Officers defend paramilitary units as effective when used properly. By REBECCA TROUNSON, Times Staff Writer MODESTO--No one disputes that Alberto Sepulveda was doing exactly as he was told in the seconds after a police SWAT team burst into his family's home early on the morning of Sept. 13. As officers rounded up his father, mother and brother, the 11-year-old quickly complied with orders to lie face down, arms outstretched, on the floor beside his bed. Less than 30 seconds later, in what police describe as a tragic accident, he was struck in the back and killed by a blast from a shotgun trained on him by a Modesto special weapons and tactics officer. The boy's death, while his father was being served with a federal arrest warrant in a drug trafficking case, sent shock waves through this Central Valley city, roiling its large, established Latino community and throwing its Police Department--and its new police chief--on the defensive. Under investigation by the state attorney general, the Stanislaus County district attorney and the Police Department itself, the case has raised numerous questions, from why agents chose to arrest Moises Sepulveda at his home to why pre-raid surveillance had not discovered that children were likely to be present. For many, though, the issue is a broader one: Why was the SWAT team there at all? "Why all these paramilitary tactics, this whole ninja way of breaking into somebody's home to serve a warrant?" asked Michael Garcia, a leader of the Modesto chapter of the American GI Forum, a Latino veterans group that has been outspoken in the case. "It's like a police state--not something I ever thought I'd see in my country." Academics such as Peter Kraska, a criminologist who has studied the growing use of SWAT teams in cities across the country, echo Garcia's concern. The fatal raid, Kraska said, highlights a troubling trend--the tendency of law enforcement agencies to rely on paramilitary police units to execute warrants in drug cases. Such an approach is risky and often unnecessary, he said. He and others cite a string of controversial incidents involving the military-style squads: * The fatal shooting in September 1999 of Denver resident Ismael Mena, 45, by SWAT team members who forced their way into what turned out to be the wrong house. * The 1996 death of Larry Harper, an Albuquerque resident who was despondent and threatening to kill himself as SWAT officers, summoned by his family, arrived and shot him to death. The city's SWAT team was dismantled after his shooting. * The 1997 death in tiny Dinuba, Calif., of Ramon Gallardo, a 64-year-old farm worker, after SWAT officers burst into his home looking for a stolen gun and shot him. A federal jury awarded Gallardo's family $12.5 million--later reduced to $6 million--in one of the largest judgments in a police brutality case. * And in Southern California, the 1999 death of Compton resident Mario Paz, who was shot in the back during a nighttime raid by SWAT officers from El Monte. Police suspected that his Compton house had been used by a drug suspect, but they later acknowledged they had no evidence that Paz or his family was involved in trafficking. The Modesto incident seems all the more confounding because police say the fatal shot was unintentional. Immediately after the shotgun discharged, Officer David Hawn exclaimed that his finger was not on the trigger, police said. Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden has speculated that the trigger may have caught on Hawn's clothing, flashlight or other equipment. But whether the shooting was accidental, a mistake or anything else is not the issue, Kraska argues. "Obviously, I don't think this officer went in and purposely executed an 11-year-old," he said. "But if the SWAT team is there, tragic accidents like this are much more likely to happen." Law enforcement officials and many Modesto residents say the real villain in the death is the Central Valley's escalating methamphetamine problem, which they argue has made SWAT actions a necessity. Stanislaus County Sheriff's Lt. Raul DeLeon, commander of a multi-agency task force set up to combat the drug scourge, describes the Central Valley as "the methamphetamine capital of the world," the primary manufacturing and distribution center for the drug. SWAT officers' powerful automatic weapons, special equipment and tactical expertise are a critical component in the fight against the drug and its dealers, he said. But the American Civil Liberties Union said it would fight to keep vote-auction.com on the Internet, saying the Web site was constitutionally protected under the First Amendment. "We think political parody and satire is protected whether on the written page or the Internet," ACLU legal director Harvey Grossman said. The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, which sued to shut down the site, said it was assured by the site's Swiss registrar, CORE Internet Council of Registrar, that vote-auction.com would be taken off the Web. The Swiss group sent the board email saying it was acting "since it does effectively appear that this domain name is used in connection with unlawful activity." The message referred to an order that Cook County Circuit Judge Michael Murphy issued at the request of Chicago election officials, requiring a similar-sounding site, voteauction.com, or any site like it, to be deleted from the web. Several attempts to open either site failed Wednesday, though vote-auction.com had been in operation a day earlier. The site was created by James Baumgartner, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., who said he did it as a parody to "evoke public commentary concerning an issue which is at the core of this nation's democracy, whether or not elections are for sale." "I want to emphasize that at no time was it my intent to have people buy and sell votes," he said in an affidavit the ACLU's Grossman showed reporters. But Chicago Board of Election Commissioners spokesman Tom Leach said the site only encouraged people to break the law. At the request of election officials, Murphy ordered a Pennsylvania-based registrar, Domain Bank Inc., to take voteauction.com off the web. Baumgartner sold the domain rights to Hans Bernhard of Vienna, Austria, for one Euro, less than a dollar. And Bernhard then arranged for the Swiss group to establish the domain vote-auction.com. Bernhard had claimed, without proof, to have been offered $260,000 for more than 21,000 votes. Even if that could be verified, there is no way to prove how the 21,000 votes would have been cast. Votes were being offered in blocks by state. For instance, the highest bidder for Michigan, a battleground state with 18 electoral votes, could direct 1,429 votes to any candidate. The current top bid for those votes was $28,000, the Bernhard site recently claimed. Lamberth told Justice Department lawyer, Thomas Millet, that depending on the testimony of White House Counsel Beth Nolan tomorrow, the evidentiary hearing into the missing White House e-mails could end Thursday. This week Beth Nolan sent a letter to Representative Burton, the Office of the Independent Counsel and Congressional Committees informing them of several other White House e-mail systems that were not searched in response to subpoenas. At the end of the hearing today, Lamberth asked Millet what time Beth Nolan could be available. He told Lamberth she would be available at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Millet then said that he wanted to inform the Court that Nolan's letter was inaccurate, that they had learned things since the letter had been sent, that some of the systems that they thought had not been archived on ARMS had been, that some of the messages that were sent in the system were archived but the ones that were received weren't. Judge Lamberth started laughing in disbelief. He told Millet that he felt like he has been spinning his wheels for months with the revelations in the Nolan letter. Lamberth, responding to Millet's representation that the Nolan letter that was filed in his Court this week was "inaccurate," said that his "Court is not powerless and will not remain floundering." That capped a day that began with a witness from Northrop Grumman whose non-compliance with a subpoena to produce documents caused a one-hour delay while the documents were retrieved from his attorney's office. Now, back to the beginning. Day 25 of the Evidentiary Hearings on the missing White House e-mail began when the witness took the stand. Mr. Lucente (didn't catch his first name), a Vice President at Logicon, which is a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman, was represented by John Bray and Anne Hart. Northrop Grumman itself was represented by Richard Oparil. There were more attorneys in the courtroom than spectators. At one point during a bench conference with the Judge, a total of twelve people rushed to confer - most of them were attorneys for the various parties. The only reporter observed in the courtroom, besides yours truly, was Pete Yost of the Associated Press, who attended the afternoon session. Under questioning, Mr. Lucente told the Court that he had received a stock grant in May from North Grumman and another stock grant in September, along with a promotion to Vice President. Lucente was transferred to a different business unit in December 1998 due to an internal reorganization and no longer had responsibility for Project X. Mr. Lucente was served a subpoena which included a document request. He told the court that he had searched his files and did not have any relevant documents. Lucente received the subpoena Monday night and did the search at that time. When asked if he had an assistant and if she had any copies of documents, Lucente said she had done a search and had none. Larry Klayman began asking Lucente about a final version of a letter to the White House which he had seen when he was interviewed by the House Committee two weeks ago. Lucente testified that he had seen this document with an exhibit number on it so he didn't think he had to produce it to the Court. Mr. Klayman asked him about drafts of the letter. Lucente said that he didn't have copies of the drafts; they had been destroyed. Lucente also said he had exchanged e-mails of the drafts with Mr. Pope, General Counsel for Northrop Grumman. Lucente asked Pope if he had a copy of the drafts and Pope said no. Mr. Lucente said he did a search for the e-mails and they were not on the server system. Lucente said the e-mail drafts should have been on the server. But when he was asked if he had done a search of the back-up tapes, he said no. He didn't ask anyone to do a search of the backup tapes. Larry Klayman asked if it was his practice to take notes at meetings. Lucente said yes. When asked if he had any notes about the e-mail matter, Mr. Lucente hemmed and hawed and was reminded that he was under oath. Then he said yes again. Mr. Klayman asked where the notes were. Lucente responded that they were in his briefcase (in his lawyer's office). With Lamberth's permission, Lucente left the stand to confer with Mr. Bray. The Court took a one-hour recess while Lucente and his attorneys left to retrieve the documents in question. The minutes ticked slowly by. The DOJ lawyers sat together in the gallery laughing and joking. I went out into the hallway and met another citizen who came to sit in on the hearing. MSNBC NEWS SERVICES KAMPALA, Uganda, Nov. 1 - The Ebola fever epidemic that has killed 80 people in northern Uganda has now spread to the far south of the country with a confirmed death in the town of Mbarara, health officials said Wednesday. A SOLDIER who had been based at the army barracks in Gulu, the center of the epidemic, became ill after moving to the barracks in Mbarara, said Sam Okware, director general for health services in Uganda's Ministry of Health. "He was in quite bad shape, and there was a high degree of suspicion it might be Ebola," Okware said. "We took some samples from him to Gulu, to the CDC mobile lab, which confirmed he was antigen positive." The soldier died last Friday in Mbarara University Hospital, the main hospital in the area, about five days after showing typical Ebola symptoms of high fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Okware said. Ebola causes what's known as a hemorrhagic fever, where the victims literally "bleed out" through every orifice. There is no known cure for the Ebola. Despite many earlier false alarms, that was the first confirmed case outside the northern district of Gulu, where the outbreak began in September. The death toll from the outbreak rose to 80 after five more people died in the past 24 hours. Twelve new cases were also identified in the same period, bringing the number of known cases to 251, health officials said. Virus hunters track Ebola The death in the busy commercial town of Mbarara, 265 miles south of Gulu, and about 25 miles north of the Tanzanian border, will heighten concerns about the disease spreading farther. Okware said a team from the Health Ministry was on its way to Mbarara, and he had asked for help from the World Health Organization and the French medical relief agency Doctors Without Borders. It has been three years since the last outbreak of the Ebola, in Gabon, when 10 people died. In all, there have been 800 deaths from the virus in Africa to date. Nov. 1 - Demonstrators invaded the normally staid and studious atmosphere of a national medical meeting here Wednesday, carrying placards and doling out leaflets intended to refute the teachings of a prominent Lyme disease expert. Post your views on MSNBC's Health Bulletin Board THE FOCUS of their ire was Dr. Alan Steere, a renowned rheumatologist who originally linked the disease with tick bites and named it after the town in Connecticut where it was discovered. Steere has become a lightning rod for angry patients who feel that his prominence has given his opinion more weight in the ongoing medical debate over whether Lyme is over- or under-treated. He, along with many physicians, supports a short-term course of antibiotics while other doctors disagree, saying that patients may need months, sometimes years, of treatment. At the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, dozens of patients gathered around the front door of the conference center, where they could catch doctors drifting out for lunch. They said they were holding a "teach-out" to counter what Steere told rheumatologists inside the building in a morning session in which he had promised to teach "How to treat and diagnose Lyme disease." Steere is a researcher at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. ONGOING DEBATE The demonstration is the latest salvo in an unusually acrimonious academic argument. Patients say they are caught in the middle, that they have trouble getting proper care and that insurance companies are loathe to pay the high price of long-term intravenous antibiotic therapy when leading experts like Steere say that such treatments are completely unnecessary. Early signs of Lyme disease . Headache . Neck stiffness . Fever . Muscle and joint pain . Fatigue . Forgetfulness . Bull's-eye rash Patients are particularly incensed by Steere's involvement in the malpractice investigation of Dr. Joseph Natole of Saginaw, Mich., who had been treating Lyme patients with intravenous antibiotics. Steere testified against the Michigan doctor, and Natole lost his medical license for six months. Patients decided to fight back, by protesting against Steere when he makes public appearances and by filing complaints against him in his home state of Massachusetts. One of the Lyme support groups has been encouraging disgruntled Steere patients to file complaints with the state's medical board. Thus far, the medical board has received more than 50 complaint letters concerning Steere, according to the Massachusetts Lyme Disease Coalition. As the patient groups have become increasingly vocal, Steere has become more reclusive. He has refused press interviews, including interview requests for this article. Outside the meeting, patients talked about why they were targeting Steere in particular. "He has been the most public," said Susan MacNamee, 43, of Perkasie, Pa. "He's the most well known. He even discovered it. So doctors believe what he says." Others suggested that Steere's vocal opposition to long-term antibiotics have led insurance companies to refuse payment for these treatments. "When he stands up and says we all are cured after four weeks of antibiotics, we can't get treatment," says Gail Wallin, 50, of Holland, Pa. PHYSICIANS ON BOTH SIDES OF DEBATE Doctors, for the most part, hurried by the protestors, ignoring their promises to "tell the truth about Lyme disease." Some physicians, like Dr. H. Paul Lasky, stopped to spar with the protestors, attempting to convince them that Steere's analysis of the disease is right. Advertisement Lasky, a physician in private practice in Cornwall, N.Y., believes that the patients who believe they have chronic Lyme disease have simply been duped by the companies selling intravenous therapy. But a Swiss doctor who stopped to talk was perplexed by all the furor. There is no controversy over Lyme disease in Europe, said Dr. Fritz Hasler, a physician in private practice in Chur, Switzerland. Doctors simply treat patients with antibiotics until they get better, Hasler said. Hasler said he attended Steere's presentation earlier in the day. "He gave a very good talk about the American view," Hasler said. "He made it clear that he thinks in Europe we may have different patient populations." McFarren had long had a significant involvement in Bolivian politics -- a situation that went unnoticed even after an expose by Narco News Bulletin, until FAIR called the wire service to request comment on McFarren's status. In our Alert, FAIR urged readers to ask AP for a full investigation of these conflicts and how they may have impacted McFarren's reporting. The same day that the FAIR alert went out, AP released a story on McFarren's resignation. However, the report glossed over key aspects of the case. (The full text appears at the end of this message.) AP acknowledged that McFarren had publicly promoted a private water project that would financially benefit the reporter's foundation. But, AP wrote, McFarren has "never written about the water project for AP." While technically true, the claim is more an indictment of McFarren and the wire service than a defense. Since last April, when the intense struggle over water rights became one of Bolivia's biggest news stories, McFarren has filed several reports about water policy, including three such stories in the last six weeks. The privatization of water that was one of the issues at the root of large-scale protests was a necessary precondition for the project McFarren was promoting. To report on the water protests without disclosing his personal stake in the issue is a gross violation of journalistic standards. The AP reports McFarren's claim that a speech he gave on the water project was delivered not to the Bolivian legislature, but to "an organization of community leaders" who happened to be "in a Bolivian congressional building." The AP does not, however, note McFarren's admission to Narco News that he works "pro bono" as a "promoter of the water export law," nor does it note that McFarren's presentation explicitly called for passage of "a specific law." These details are relevant to any assessment of whether or not McFarren was in fact lobbying the legislature, and should have been included in the AP's story. In addition, the AP story says nothing about how McFarren's supervisors could have been, as they claim, unaware of his activities. Narco News reports that McFarren is "a near mythical player in the highest levels of Bolivian society," often covered in the La Paz press' society pages "as he rubs elbows socially with... the foreign diplomatic corps, the commander of the Bolivian armed forces and other officials." AP fails to report on additional McFarren projects that may have compromised his, and thus AP's, reporting. A simple search of the Nexis news database and a look at McFarren's Quipus Foundation website reveal that McFarren has for years been involved in projects dependent on numerous government agencies and corporations. A favorable 1997 profile in the publication Americas (11/21/97) stated McFarren "is perched on the pinnacle of a cultural-publishing-media-philanthropic conglomerate, perhaps the only one of its kind in the world." According to the profile, McFarren is also "a founder and board member of the Bolivian Export Foundation." Quipus, another foundation that McFarren created and presides over, boasts $6 million in support from the city government of La Paz, Bolivia's capital, and also receives funds from the country's national government. COULD ISRAEL HAVE BOMBED THE USS COLE? by Thomas C. Mountain © 2000 Did the Mossad, Israel's secret police, bomb the USS Cole? I think they should certainly be considered first amongst all the other "usual suspects". Why do I say this? To be able to understand my reasoning requires one to step back for a minute and review the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen in the context of the renewal of the Palestinian Intifada and the public relations nightmare Israel had found itself in. Ask yourself who benefited the most from replacing images of Palestinian children being shot dead in their parents arms with images of the coffins of dead American sailors amidst weeping family members on the front pages of papers and CNN across America and the world? Remember now, when the USS Cole bombing occurred Israel was facing a storm of condemnation internationally, and more importantly to their survival, rapidly eroding support amongst the American people. Who can forget the image of that poor Palestinian boy, shot dead in his fathers arms, front and center in all the news media. For the first time in its history, Israel had begun to lose the public relations battle for the sympathy of the American people. Oh, there has been a serious shift in opinion away from unconditional support since the original outbreak of the Intifada. But the sort of soul searching, disgust and outrage at Israel that was taking place just before the bombing of the USS Cole on the part of the American people was at an all time high. The bombing of the USS Cole couldn¹t have come at a better time for Israel. But does this mean Israel did it? The next question we should ask is why hasn¹t anyone claimed credit for this latest victory? The past attacks against the US have all been claimed. Even public relations disasters in the "suicide bombings" inside Israel itself were claimed. Why not now? If you do a little homework you find a number of "unclaimed bombings" in the past proved to be the work of the Israeli secret police (the Mossad) and/or the CIA. Okay, so Israel has its committed its share of terrorist bombings, but why would Israel bomb a warship of their Godfather, the USA? Isn't the USA the only country in the world that continues to support Israel in the face of unanimous international condemnation of the Israelis continued massacre of the Palestinians? Israel bomb the Americans, get out of here! Of course this would not be the first time Israel would have attacked a US military target. Remember the USS Liberty in 1967? The following is an account by James M. Ennes, Jr. an officer on the USS Liberty, an intelligence trawler patrolling off the coast of Israel and Egypt during the 1967 Israeli-Arab war. "In June 1967, jet aircraft and motor torpedo boats of Israel brutally assaulted an American naval vessel, the U.S.S. Liberty, in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. The attack was preceded by more than six hours of intense low-level surveillance by Israeli photo-reconnaissance aircraft which buzzed the intelligence ship thirteen times, sometimes flying as low as 200 feet directly overhead. The reconnaissance pilots were heard by intercept operators in Germany and in Lebanon reporting to their headquarters that they could see an American flag and men sunbathing on deck. Both its shape and rotation are thought to be the outcome of a history of violent collisions. A detailed description of the asteroid and its observed rotation is reported in this week's issue of the journal "Science," by Drs. Scott Hudson of Washington State University and Steven Ostro of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA. "The vast majority of asteroids, and all the planets, spin about a single axis, like a football thrown in a perfect spiral," Hudson said, "but Toutatis tumbles like a flubbed pass." One consequence of this strange rotation is that Toutatis does not have a fixed north pole like the Earth. Instead, its north pole wanders along a curve on the asteroid about every 5.4 days. "The stars viewed from Toutatis wouldn't repeatedly follow circular paths, but would crisscross the sky, never following the same path twice," Hudson said. "The motion of the Sun during a Toutatis year, which is about four Earth years, would be even more complex," he continued. "In fact, Toutatis doesn't have anything you could call a 'day.' Its rotation is the result of two different types of motion with periods of 5.4 and 7.3 Earth days, that combine in such a way that Toutatis's orientation with respect to the solar system never repeats." The rotations of hundreds of asteroids have been studied with optical telescopes. The vast majority of them appear to be in simple rotation with a fixed pole and periods typically between one hour and one day, the scientists said, even though the violent collisions these objects are thought to have experienced would mean that every one of them, at some time in the past, should have been tumbling like Toutatis. Internal friction has caused asteroids to change into simple rotational patterns in relatively brief amounts of time. However, Toutatis rotates so slowly that this "dampening" process would take much longer than the age of the solar system. This means that the rotation of Toutatis is a remarkable, well-preserved relic of the collision-related evolution of an asteroid. The scientists' computer model reveals Toutatis to have dimensions of 2.9 miles by 1.5 miles by 1.2 miles. Numerous surface features, including a pair of half-mile-wide craters, side by side, and a series of three prominent ridges -- a type of asteroid mountain range -- are presumed to result from a complex history of impacts. This plot show how small the inclination of the orbit of Toutatis is. Toutatis turned out to be one of the most interesting objects found recently. It is an Apollo object ( Earth Crossing ). It has a record low inclination ( less than half a degree ). Its orbit is one of the most chaotic in the Solar System. Its rotation is also very peculiar since the precession period is quite high while its rotation period is quite slow. It is also one of the very rare asteroids for which we have radar images. These images have been obtained in 1992 using the Arecibo and Goldstone radar by JPL/NASA scientist Dr. Steve Ostro. You can find much more interesting information and images of Toutatis on Dr Hudson's web page. These radar observations have made Toutatis a "celebrity". With its nearly 4 years rotation period, Toutatis has made close approaches to us in late 1988, early 1989 when we discovered it, then in 1992, when it was obswerved by dozens of Observatories on Earth and from space. Seen from Toutatis, the Earth will be as large in the sky as the Moon is from the Earth, and from Earth it will be large enough that the best telescopes will start resolving its apparent size. By then, radar images will be much better than the 1992 observations. Conditions of discovery : In January 1989, O.C.A. astronomers Odile Calame and Derral Mulholland had requested a series of plates on Jupiter, using the Schmidt telescope in order to derive astrometry of the faint satellites of Jupiter. Since it was the first time we were using Tech Pan emulsion on Jupiter ( a much better emulsion than other Kodak plates ), I wanted to see whether or not new satellites of Jupiter could be detected. Instead of taking a single plate as would have been necessary for the astrometry program, I took two in succession. I took a first couple of plates the night before, and scanned them briefly during the following afternoon, without finding any interesting satellite or asteroid. The following night, i.e. on Januray 4th 1989, I took another couple of plates, together with Derral Mulholland, and since I knew there wasn't any interesting objects on it, processed the plates without taking a look at them. I did put the two plates in the dryer and went to bed. The following morning, Christian Pollas removed the plates from the dryer and discovered a very bright fast moving astetroid. When I woke up at noon, Robert Chemin had already started reducing the asteroid's position, which was announced at the beginning of the afternoon and given a temporary number by the IAU. Toutatis at the time was moving so fast that it had traveled more than 2.5 degrees in a single day, and was just outside of our field of view the night before. GLEN ELLYN, Illinois -- Aides to Texas Gov. George W. Bush
acknowledged Thursday that in 1976 Bush was arrested for driving under
the influence of alcohol in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Bush, who was 30 at the time, paid a $150 fine and his driving privileges
were temporarily suspended in that state.
Responding to a news report about the arrest just five days before the
presidential election, one aide here said, "We obviously believe the timing
of this disclosure is political. It was leaked with the intent of hurting the
governor."
Campaign officials for Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore declined
to comment.
"It's not something he's proud of," Bush spokeswoman Mindy Tucker said,
explaining why Bush had not come forward with the information on his own.
Bush was pulled over by police for driving too slowly near his family's
Kennebunkport, Maine, summer home during the Labor Day weekend.
Other people were in the car, but Tucker did not know who.
The GOP presidential nominee has said he quit drinking the day after his
40th birthday -- July 6, 1986. Alcohol "was beginning to compete for my
affections," he told an interviewer in September.
His presidential campaign said Thursday they decided to release details
after the 1976 police report was faxed to Maine news outlets.

Just get up out of your moderator's seat and take a copy of a book, any book. Walk over to Governor Bush, hand it to him, and ask him to read. That's right. Just ask him to read, from anywhere in the book. I have a hunch that he can't read. I know this is an outrageous thing to say. I have no proof. It's just an impression that's been sticking in my craw for some time. I am reluctant to make this observation not only because it seems so cruel, but also just the possibility of it is so surreal and unlikely, that no sane man would ever utter such a thing. But I was struck by something in last week's debate. Bush never wrote down a single word on the legal pad in front of him during the debate. I had never seen a debater-even Ronald Reagan-refuse to even jot a word down so he wouldn't forget to respond to it. Was Bush not writing anything because his mind is a steel trap with enhanced memory, storage, and impeccable collating capabilities? I'm honestly worried he cannot read and write on an adult level. Back in the primary, he was asked what his favorite book was as a child. He replied, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." As it turned out, that book wasn't published until he was in his 20s. Everyone laughed it off at the time. From that point on, his response has been that his favorite book is "the Bible" (and his favorite hero is "Jesus" and his favorite philosopher is "Jesus" and when Oprah asked him, "What are you sure of?" he replied, "Jesus" and "the Bible"). Christopher Hitchens, no friend of the Clinton/Gore administration, reports in "The Nation" this month that when Bush's aides would give him briefing papers to read, he would ask others to read them for him, or just give him a verbal summary. Of course, a briefing paper is just that-a summary, a "brief." No one, it seems, saw Bush read them. Gail Sheehy in "Vanity Fair" writes that Bush has a learning disability, that he is "dyslexic." This is a serious and frustrating handicap faced by millions of Americans. But it is not a scarlet letter. Lots of people I know are dyslexic, and there are things they do to overcome it. The Bush camp denied the "charge," and no one in the media followed up. The media, in fact, has stopped reporting how CONSISTENTLY and OFTEN Bush mixes up his words and just says the wrong damn thing. At first, it was cute and funny in an Archie Bunker sort of way. But it's not just the word "subliminal" he has a problem with-the mangling of the language happens in virtually every speech I have heard the governor make. Even though every speech is scripted, and he repeats it almost verbatim in friendly robot-like tones at every campaign stop, he can't help but lose himself in the words he is supposed to say. It was no mistake that at one point in the debate, when he started down his robot path, he realized he wasn't answering the question, went silent, and then said, "I forgot the question," looking like a lost schoolboy. Now, don't get me wrong. I do not point this out with any glee or condescension. I am not exactly Mr. Intelligence here. Just read any of these columns or my Internet letters and you will find them chock full of misspellings, improper grammar, and bizarre syntax-in spite of the best efforts of my editors or staff assistants who are simply overwhelmed and defeated by my assault on the King's English. But I am not running for President of the United States. And I am not attacking teachers for doing a lousy job. And I am not making phony promises that "not one child shall be left behind" (when, in the state of Texas, more poor kids go without health care than any other state in the nation). I got a call last week from someone I know at Yale. A friend of this person had secretly gone into the records facility and looked up the original transcript of George W. Bush from 1964-68. Not only were his grades all that we have heard about-C's and D's and not a single A-but it looked as if they were written on the file card over OTHER grades that had been erased! Could there have been ORIGINAL grades that were WORSE than the ones he's admitted to? Look, I'm all for the dumb guys, being one myself. I dropped out of college after the first year. I still don't know if "ammount" has one "m" or two. But The Leader of the Free World should at least be able to read! Or say "explicit" instead

For the first time in years, a dangerous confluence of factors has emerged presenting the Arab states with a unique opportunity tolaunch a coordinated attack against the Jewish state.Israel's traditional friends abroad are largely preoccupied. America isat the end of a tight election campaign. Washington is distracted, anduntil the next president is inaugurated in January, there will be avacuum of power at the top. Though the US would almost certainly come toIsrael's aid in the event of an attack, a lame-duck Clintonadministration would be hard pressed to mount the requisite diplomaticeffort to quell the violence swiftly.That leaves the Europeans - but they are heavily dependent on Arab oil.The oil markets have been volatile, with the price per barrel now around$35, three times greater than a year ago.In addition, Israel's image throughout the world has been battered byrecent events. Israeli officials acknowledge that the Palestinians arewinning the propaganda war. Our Arab neighbors mayperceive this division as a sign of national weakness waiting to be exploited. Recent Israeli actions have served to reinforce the growing perception ofIsraeli vulnerability. The retreat under fire from Lebanon, theabandonment of Joseph's Tomb, and the repeated Israeli issuance of emptyultimatums have all sent signals of moral and psychological exhaustion.On the ground, the Israeli army is strung out, with untold numbers ofsoldiers protecting dozens of settlements and roads throughout theterritories. Other troops have been deployed along the Lebanese border toprotect the northern communities from possible Hizbullah attacks. It mayvery well be that the army is spread too thin.For an Arab strategic planner sitting in Cairo or Damascus, it would bedifficult to ignore the temptation posed by Israel's current dilemma.With its allies distracted, its society split, its image besmirched andits security forces engaged, Israel would appear to be ripe for an attack. As the 1973 Yom Kippur War demonstrated, such attacks are carefullyplanned and orchestrated in advance. A key component of any such plotwould include deceptive measures designed to lull Israel into a falsesense of security. As the late president Chaim Herzog pointed out in hishistory of the Arab-Israeli wars, Egypt launched a disinformation campaign in mid-1973 to create the impression that it was unprepared for war.What if the recent Arab summit in Cairo were part of a similar campaignof deception? The relatively moderate outcome of the summit would seem to belie such apossibility. But Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's address, in which heintimated that Egypt is unprepared to go to war, sounded like a throwbackto 1973. For years, Egypt has been spending billions of dollars toupgrade its armed forces and provide them with the latest Americanmilitary technology. Mubarak's statement seems more like a smokescreenthan a description of reality.The dangers inherent in such a scenario should not be dismissed out ofhand. If the Arab states were to launch a surprise attack, Israel wouldbe faced with fighting a conventional war on its borders at the same timeas it would be facing guerilla warfare in the territories, a wave ofterrorism in its cities, and an uprising by a restive Israeli Arab population.As strong as we are, this may be too much to bear. Even victory wouldcome at a calamitous price. The only way to minimize the danger is toprepare for it in advance. Except this time, it is the "Evil of Two Lessers." :) When I think of either of them being on TV almost daily, I think I shall take up drinking! It will certainly get the set turned off at my house. Also, he [Bush] says he hasn't been under the influence of demanding alcohol in 14 years. That's quite a while ago. Fourteen years is plenty of time to "get over it". So what's your point??? He got the rehab he needed, obviously... and does not still have the problem, so he says. WHY beat a dead horse? The subject is moot at this point. This kind of political mud slinging is exactly what I do not understand about the 'new democrats', i.e... bringing up stuff that happened "x" many years ago, as if it is still the problem today. I know many people who are quote **FORMER** alcoholics and function just fine in their jobs today, successfully, without a drink even under stress. I also know many who have previously had some psychological problems, but, again, function normally and without problems today. Everyone tells the person who needs help to go to rehab. They go, and are rehabilitated, or rehabilitate themselves, yet everyone still points and accuses as though the problem still exists. These allegations have been on the Internet for many months. Someone
sent an email about a G. Bush or something like that arrested for drunk
driving in Maine. Bush's press secretary admitted today she was aware of
his previous arrests (actually two, one in his earlier, earlier youth for
stealing a wreath from a hotel).
I think the real issue here is Bush's lack of truthfulness and openness about
his past, some of which is part of the public records. (Maybe he assumed it
had been expunged due to his father's status) The lack of his foresight in
not releasing this information about his arrests earlier shows his lack of
leadership and yes, intelligence. Bush is not ready for prime time.
Can he even read? Has he been tested? :-)

-Caveat Lector- November 3, 2000 Reno sets investigation of aborted drug probe By Jerry Seper THE WASHINGTON TIMES Attorney General Janet Reno yesterday ordered an investigation into accusations by five Houston police detectives who said they were pulled off a yearlong undercover drug probe after a key suspect in the case met with Vice President Al Gore. Miss Reno ordered the probe amid accusations of "political interference" by the Houston detectives, members of a joint Drug Enforcement Administration/ Houston Police Department task force. The case was shut down two days after the probe's key target, Houston rapper James Prince, met with Mr. Gore at a Houston church. She also ordered that DEA agents in Houston be removed from the case and replaced by "a new team of experienced special agents" from other offices assisted by FBI agents, who also will be assigned to the investigation. She said the new team would be in place in a week. "The Department of Justice and the DEA administrator find the DEA reports regarding the status of the Houston investigation disturbing," Assistant Attorney General Robert Raben said in a letter last night to the House Government Reform Committee, which had sought information on the accusations. "Further, we take very seriously any allegation that an investigation has been politicized. For these and other reasons, the attorney general and the DEA administrator have asked the Office of Inspector General to investigate these matters," he said. On Monday, the Houston detectives told House investigators that DEA Agent Ernest Howard, head of the agency's Houston office, said the probe had been shut down despite more than 20 arrests with others pending. They said they were told not to conduct further inquiries or pursue new leads involving Mr. Prince, head of a music recording firm known as Rap-A-Lot. One Houston detective told investigators, "It was a slap in the face to me . . .. The rug was pulled out from under us." The probe, dubbed "Rap-A-Lot," had netted several of Mr. Prince's employees. House investigators want to know if there is a connection between a March 12 campaign visit by Mr. Gore with Mr. Prince at a Houston church to which Mr. Prince had donated $1 million and a decision two days later to end the probe. They also are looking into accusations that Mr. Prince offered $1 million to the Gore campaign prior to the vice president's visit. Mr. Prince was not available yesterday for comment, although he told the Dallas Morning News, which first reported the undercover probe had been shut down, he had unfairly been targeted because he is wealthy and black. He has denied any wrongdoing and Federal Election Commission records show he has not contributed to the Gore campaign. James Kennedy, spokesman for Mr. Gore, dismissed the accusations as "baseless," saying the vice president had no knowledge of the Houston investigation. But James C. Wilson, the committee's chief counsel, took exception to Mr. Kennedy's comment, saying that in view of the Justice Department investigation, "Mr. Kennedy's comments are nothing more than meaningless spin." Committee Chairman Rep. Dan Burton asked DEA Administrator Donnie R. Marshall in a letter this week for information on whether "Mr. Prince was promising a large political contribution to the Gore campaign, the [Democratic National Convention] or any other political committee." The Indiana Republican wants the DEA to make nine agents involved in the probe available for interviews to determine if political pressure was brought to bear to end the probe. Mr. Burton told the DEA that while Mr. Gore's role in the matter remained "unclear," the Houston detectives were certain why the probe had ended. He also said Mr. Howard, when questioned by House investigators, denied the case had been closed a statement since contradicted by e-mails Mr. Howard sent to DEA headquarters in Washington. One e-mail, sent two days after Mr. Gore's visit to Houston, said the undercover probe was closed due to political pressure. Mr. Howard also noted that Mr. Prince was present "with the VP at the church" during his March 12 visit and "undoubtedly had a picture session as well." In another e-mail, Mr. Howard said the situation involving the probe "has only gotten worse" and he had decided "that the Houston Division will curtail any enforcement action against this subject." He also said he had transferred Agent Jack Schumacher, a veteran DEA official who headed the Rap-A-Lot probe, to a desk job, describing the order as "an unfortunate occurrence." Mr. Howard, in another e-mail, said he had briefed former DEA Administrator Thomas Constantine on the probe "because of the potential political pressure associated with it," but that the investigation had been shut down anyway. By John Berlau, Washington Correspondent for Investors Business Daily As the Clinton administration winds down and federal investigators close the books on its many scandals, one major controversy appears never to have stopped. Groups and individuals critical of the administration are still receiving a surprising number of suspicious visits from the Internal Revenue Service. In March of this year, a report from Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation found "no credible evidence" that the IRS had targeted Clinton's opponents for audits. But less than two months later, the nursing home owned by Clinton's alleged rape victim, Juanita Broaddrick, received a fresh audit from the agency. Broaddrick joined a long list of other women who were audited by the agency after coming forward against Clinton. When Clinton was running for president in 1992, Gennifer Flowers told the media about her affair with him. In 1993, right after Clinton was elected, she received an audit. Paula Jones got her audit notice one week after she refused to settle her sexual-harassment lawsuit against Clinton. Former Miss America Elizabeth Ward Gracen was also audited shortly after she claimed she had an affair with Clinton. According to WorldNetDaily, Gracen said she was warned by an anonymous caller that the IRS would visit her if she came forward. And, in another incredible "coincidence," Katherine Prudhomme, who grilled Gore in New Hampshire last winter about his feelings about Broaddrick, found out from the IRS just hours before she spoke at a rally in August in front of Hillary Clinton's New York headquarters that she owed $1,500 in back taxes. Prudhomme said this was confusion, based on money that should have been classified as tax-exempt. (The IRS told Prudhomme a week ago that it was dropping the case.) Another hard-hitting Clinton critic, Bill O'Reilly of Fox News's The O'Reilly Factor, said he has been audited three years in a row ever since he began hosting the show. O'Reilly said he didn't know if the audit was political, but noted that he had never been audited before in his 25-year career, even when he was making a lucrative salary as co-host of Inside Edition. "I have never set up any kind of depreciation, or trust funds or any of that," O'Reilly said. "I basically pay, so it struck me as unusual." David and Amy Ridenour, who head the National Center for Public Policy Research, also find it unusual that they recently received their second audit in four years. The National Center is critical of the Clinton administration's policies on environmental issues and also criticized Hillarycare in 1994. "Twice in the Clinton administration seems like more than just a little coincidence, inasmuch as we had a clean bill of health a few years ago," David Ridenour said. "If they're doing this randomly, we sure are coming up pretty frequently in the random audits." Amy Ridenour recalled that when she asked the IRS agent in the first audit why the group was being audited, he said, "You must have made someone mad." And two conservative groups that were audited in 1996 still have not found closure. Both the Heritage Foundation and Citizens Against Government Waste sent out a fundraising letter signed by presidential candidate Bob Dole that year. Soon after then-Rep. David Skaggs (D-Colo.) complained on the House floor that the groups were engaging in possibly illegal political activity, they were audited. And the audits continue today. Heritage Foundation vice president and treasurer John Von Kannon said the IRS had okayed fundraising letters of this type for Heritage twice before. He thought there would be no problem in 1996, because "this is the politician endorsing us, it's not us endorsing the politician," he said. After more than four years, Von Kannon says all he wants from the IRS is a final ruling. "Our concern is to get this audit behind us," he said. "Tell us what the rules are and we will follow them." Leslie Paige, vice president of CAGW, expresses similar frustration. "It's cost tens of thousands of dollars and multiple hours to comply with their wishes," Paige said. "This has gone on for [more than] three years now with no resolution." It's true that at least some of the conservative groups may not have been targeted because of their political viewpoints. NR, for instance, may have been picked out in the mid 90s because it suddenly showed a profit for the first time in 40 years. "We think that raised a flag of some kind," said Jack Fowler, NR's associate publisher. "We don't discount that there was malicious intention to go after conservative organizations, we just don't know that we come under that general attack." British government admits to 250,000 possible variant CJD deaths

The Blair government has doubled its estimation of the possible number of victims of
variant Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease (vCJD), caused by eating beef infected with "mad
cow disease" (BSE-Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) from 136,000 to 250,000,
according to the BBC. The revision means that the government is now working on a
"worst case scenario" of one in every 250 people in Britain dying from the disease.
Variant CJD is a fatal brain wasting disease beginning typically with depressive-
type symptoms, lack of coordination and unspecified pains, before progressing to
complete helplessness, blindness and certain death. As yet there is no proven means
of arresting the disease's progress, let alone curing it.
The revised estimate was made public just days after Judge Lord Phillips published
the final report of the government-convened inquiry into BSE. After a two-year
investigation, Phillips' report did not make any criticisms of the food industry,
whose practices lie at the heart of the scandal, or of former government ministers,
despite acknowledging their efforts to cover-up the crisis.
Phillips conclusion that no one could be held responsible for the worst food health
disaster in Britain was not surprising. The incoming Labour government, which
convened the Inquiry in 1997, intended it mainly as a means of defusing public anger
over a crisis that had played a significant role in eroding support for the previous
Conservative government.
The official BSE report was followed by the announcement that the Labour government
would ensure a care and compensation package to the families of those who died.
Agriculture Secretary Nick Brown, speaking on BBC TV's Breakfast with Frost
programme, admitted that the number of people who will die from vCJD could grow
"much, much larger". He summed up official indifference to the terrible fate that
could befall many families by claiming the numbers were "just predictions", whilst
taking the opportunity to promote the British beef industry. "I eat British beef, I
know British beef is amongst the safest in the world," Brown stated.
Also speaking to the BBC, Professor John Collinge, of the BSE Advisory Committee,
took issue with the "false optimism and wishful thinking, which has bedevilled", the
BSE investigation "for too long." "We might be seeing an epidemic that involves
hundreds of thousands of people. Let's hope that's not the case, but it's still
possible", he said.
Putting the risks into context, microbiologist and leading CJD expert Dr Stephen
Dealler said on average people in the UK had eaten 50 meals made from the tissue of
an infected animal. "At the moment the number of cases of CJD we are seeing are
doubling every year. If they double for a long time then the numbers are in
millions, if they double for just a few years then the numbers are in thousands. At
the moment it is very difficult to know," Dealler said. The Report from the official
BSE Inquiry found that a cow could be infected with BSE by eating contaminated
material the size of a peppercorn.
Government adviser Professor Roy Anderson said that news that a 74-year old man had
died from vCJD last yearmost known victims have been youngernecessitated a major
re-evaluation of the possible scale of the crisis. Anderson's earlier computer
predictions had forecast that up to 6,000 people had been infected between 1980 and
1996. That figure could now rise as high as 130,000 as there is concern that many
elderly people with vCJD could have been wrongly diagnosed as suffering from
Alzheimer's disease, which has similar symptoms.
Fears of a vCJD epidemic have also been heightened by news that a cluster pattern of
cases may be occurring in a former South Yorkshire mining village. Accountant Sarah
Roberts, 28, of Armthorpe, Doncaster, died in September only nine weeks after she
was diagnosed with vCJD. Her former neighbour and friend Matthew Parker, 19, who
attended the same school, died of vCJD in 1997.
It has now been revealed that a third victim of vCJD, former RAF policeman Adrian
Hodgkinson, 25, had made regular visits to Armthorpe to see his grandmother every
weekend between 1972 and 1986. If a link is proven it would indicate that the three
victims may have been infected by the same source. The CJD surveillance unit at
Edinburgh University is exploring the possible link. If Doncaster does reveal a
cluster it will be the second such grouping in Britain. Last month, a fifth person
in the Leicestershire village of Queniborough died from suspected vCJD, following
