[CTRL] Patriotism a Communist Plot All Along?
-Caveat Lector- .. From the New Paradigms Project [Not Necessarily Endorsed] Note: We store 100's of related New Paradigms Posts at: http://www.msen.com/~lloyd/oldprojects/recentmail.html Subject: Patriotism a Communist Plot All Along? REVIEW | June 3, 2002 Patriotism's Secret History by Peter Dreier Dick Flacks http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020603c=1s=dreierhttp://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020603c=1s=http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20020603c=1s=dreierdreier Many Americans believe that the left is antipatriotic (and even anti-American), while the political right truly expresses the American spirit and reveres its symbols. Particularly since the late 1960s--when the movement against US intervention in Vietnam gained momentum--the terms progressive and patriotism have rarely been used in the same sentence, at least in the mainstream media. It has become conventional wisdom that conservatives wave the American flag while leftists burn it. Patriotic Americans display the flag on their homes; progressives turn it upside down to show contempt. Recent months have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Americans proudly displaying the Stars and Stripes on their cars, homes, businesses, T-shirts, caps, lapel pins and even tattoos. This outpouring of flag-waving signifies a variety of sentiments--from identification with the victims of the September 11 attacks to support for the military's invasion of Afghanistan. But in our popular culture, displays of the American flag are--along with the very idea of patriotism--typically viewed as expressions of conservative politics. The patriotic fervor since September 11 has revitalized that belief and, as in other times, has given conservative politicos and pundits a handy means to undermine dissent and progressive initiatives. A case in point: In Santa Barbara, California, progressive County Supervisor Gail Marshall is facing the possibility of a recall election fueled by right-wing forces opposed to her support for environmental regulation, affordable housing and labor unions. Because Marshall occupies the key swing seat on the five-member county board, Santa Barbara's conservative activists--funded by oil interests, agribusiness and land developers--have been trying to unseat her for years. They launched a recall campaign after Marshall refused to rubber-stamp a proposal to require the Pledge of Allegiance at meetings of one of her community advisory boards. Marshall said she wanted the board to discuss the idea, but her opponents--who made sure that TV camera crews were present at the meeting where the issue first surfaced--have turned her civil libertarian instincts into proof that she's hostile to public expressions of patriotism. In TV ads and newsletters, Marshall's opponents--who are gathering signatures for a recall petition that, if successful, will go before the voters this fall--claim that her alleged reluctance to have the pledge recited was clear confirmation of their suspicion that she is a socialist. Ironically, the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by a leading Christian socialist, Francis Bellamy, who was fired from his Boston ministry for his sermons depicting Jesus as a socialist. Bellamy penned the Pledge of Allegiance for Youth's Companion, a magazine for young people published in Boston with a circulation of about 500,000. A few years earlier, the magazine had sponsored a largely successful campaign to sell American flags to public schools. In 1891 the magazine hired Bellamy--whose first cousin Edward Bellamy was the famous socialist author of the utopian novel Looking Backward--to organize a public relations campaign to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America by promoting use of the flag in public schools. Bellamy gained the support of the National Education Association, along with President Benjamin Harrison and Congress, for a national ritual observance in the schools, and he wrote the Pledge of Allegiance as part of the program's flag salute ceremony. Bellamy thought such an event would be a powerful expression on behalf of free public education. Moreover, he wanted all the schoolchildren of America to recite the pledge at the same moment. He hoped the pledge would promote a moral vision to counter the individualism embodied in capitalism and expressed in the climate of the Gilded Age, with its robber barons and exploitation of workers. Bellamy intended the line One nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all to express a more collective and egalitarian vision of America. Bellamy's view that unbridled capitalism, materialism and individualism betrayed America's promise was widely shared in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many American radicals and progressive reformers proudly asserted their patriotism. To them, America stood for basic democratic values--economic and social equality,

This interview was conducted by telephone at around noon July 8th. *** Jared Israel: Mr. Lane, this is Jared Israel calling from the Website, Emperor's Clothes. We deal with foreign policy and we're examining the widespread argument that you guys are behind everything that's happened in Central Asia. Barry Lane: And I'm trying to figure out how you get to that! [Laughs boisterously.] Jared Israel: Well, there are two key points. One of which we're already documenting, which is that Zalmay Khalilzad was a consultant for you - Barry Lane: Well, he was and he wasn't. Jared Israel: My understanding is he never worked directly for you. Is that right? Barry Lane: Yep. He worked for Cambridge Energy Research Associates. CERA. C-E-R-A. That's Daniel Yergin's outfit. Like the RAND Corporation - Jared Israel: They're owned by RAND? Barry Lane: No, no they're *like* RAND. They're a consultant. And Khalilzad worked for them. Because he was quite a noted expert on Afghanistan you know, so he did consulting for us. Jared Israel: My understanding is that he's a door-opener because he's very influential. Is that correct? Barry Lane: Well, yes. Jared Israel: Is it commonplace for companies dealing with an area to have people working for them that have influence in the area. I mean - Barry Lane: You know, that's how Henry Kissinger makes his living today. Jared Israel: The argument is then made by people that therefore what he is doing now he is doing as your agent or the agent of the oil industry in general. Barry Lane: Well, I'm trying to figure out how you get there because we officially - and this was way back in in December 1998 - withdrew from the Centgas consortium and never looked back. Jared Israel: Is any other oil company now hot and panting for a pipeline through there? Barry Lane: I haven't heard of anybody else except Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Turkmenistan would want it so it would have a place to sell its gas and Pakistan would want it so it would have a gas supply for its markets *if* they do need a supply anymore. Jared Israel: And of course Afghanistan wants the fees. It occurred to me that it's in the interest of Afghanistan to say UNOCAL is still interested because that makes the project seem more attractive and *they* need it as a cash cow. So you guys are not secretly planning to go back? Barry Lane: No. No we've got enough other things on our plate that are placing demands on our capital and our management's time and basically we've kind of focused on many other areas. Plenty of other things on our plate and that's not one of them. We've said that over and over again. Jared Israel: So you're not going to surprise us tomorrow? The so-called proof that's presented that you are still involved is a May 13th BBC article in which the source is Alim Razim, Afghanistan's minister for Mines and Industries. And the BBC quote is: Mr Razim said US energy company Unocal was the 'lead company' among those that would build the pipeline, which would bring 30bn cubic meters of Turkmen gas to market annually. Barry Lane: Well if you read the actual words that are said, and we don't know if the quotes are direct - watch the tenses very closely - you'll notice he said Unocal *was* the lead you know - Jared Israel: You're right. It's not a direct quote. The only thing they're quoting are the words, lead company. The other thing that is being asserted everywhere is that Hamid Karzai, the current head of the Afghan 'government' once worked for you. Barry Lane: Yeah. Yeah, well that's probably one of the great urban legends. He never worked for us. Jared Israel: He didn't work for somebody else who worked for you? Barry Lane: No. No, not him. He was never a consultant, never an employee. We've exhaustively searched through all our records to try and find out where the hell that came from. Jared Israel: Le Monde. Dec. 6th, 2001. Barry Lane: Le Monde. Le Monde was the one who wrote it first and you know what's strange about it is I've asked reporters over and over again, go ask Mr. Karzai himself. And nobody has. Jared Israel: Well the argument is that there is something sinister and therefore you would both deny it anyway. But my argument is in order to posit that this relationship existed in the first place you have to have some
[CTRL] NYTimes.com Article: Study Favors Different Tack on Smallpox
-Caveat Lector- This article from NYTimes.com has been sent to you by [EMAIL PROTECTED] Study Favors Different Tack on Smallpox July 9, 2002 By WILLIAM J. BROAD A new study finds large differences in how four different vaccination strategies would fight a smallpox terror attack, with the best allowing 440 deaths and the worst 110,000 deaths. The study used a mathematical model to compare how a smallpox attack on a large city that infected 1,000 people would progress when countered with diverse vaccination plans meant to halt the spread of the highly contagious disease. In all cases, mass vaccination of the United States population worked far better than limited, local immunizations, a strategy the federal government has tended to prefer. We find that mass vaccination results in both far fewer deaths and much faster epidemic eradication, the authors concluded. In the best case, the hypothetical epidemic was halted in 115 days and in the worst, 350 days. The analysis, published this week in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was written by Edward H. Kaplan, a public health specialist at Yale University, and David L. Craft and Lawrence M. Wein, both of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Ever since smallpox was eradicated from human populations decades ago, federal officials have resisted mass vaccination because the vaccine uses a live virus that can cause severe side effects and even kill. In the days of widespread vaccination, roughly one person in a million receiving the vaccine died. But federal policy is in flux because of fears of bioterrorism. Although today only Russia and the United States are known to have stocks of the virus, experts say clandestine supplies probably exist. Most people are considered vulnerable to a smallpox attack because immunity is thought to wane over time. The United States stopped routine vaccinations in 1972. Smallpox kills roughly one in three victims who are unvaccinated. Vaccination can save even infected people: if given within four days of exposure to the virus, the vaccine halts the disease's advance. The new study, coming amid rising criticism of federal policy in recent months, claims to be the first to make detailed comparisons of the vaccination options. It expands on a presentation Dr. Kaplan gave last month in Washington. The study found the least effective method to be ring vaccination, the primary way smallpox was eradicated from human populations. It consists of isolating infected patients and vaccinating people found to be in close contact with them, forming a ring of immunization around any outbreak and a barrier to its spread. In the hypothetical attack, ring vaccination allowed 367,000 cases of smallpox and 110,000 deaths and took 350 days to extinguish the outbreak. By contrast, mass vaccinations as soon as authorities became aware of a attack - it takes roughly two weeks for smallpox to incubate and a body to show symptoms - would result in 1,830 cases and 560 deaths within 115 days. The study found that if the authorities decided belatedly to switch from ring-to-mass vaccination on the 33rd day of the crisis, the effect would still be considerable, 15,570 cases and 4,680 deaths. The cost of waiting, the authors said, is very high - 4,120 incremental deaths. The study found that the vaccination of the United States population before an attack worked best of all to cut fatalities. If only 40 percent of the population were immunized before any such attack, the same attack followed by wider mass vaccinations would produce 440 deaths. But if followed with ring vaccinations, the result would be 40,000 deaths. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/09/health/09SMAL.html?ex=1027207028ei=1en=8d6aa14ab1ff07c4 HOW TO ADVERTISE - For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyright 2002 The New York Times Company A HREF=http://www.ctrl.org/;www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. [CTRL] NYTimes.com Article: Do Firefighters Like to Set Fires?
-Caveat Lector- This article from NYTimes.com has been sent to you by [EMAIL PROTECTED] Maybe Manchurian Candidates are being programmed to be firefighters in order to have access to the land. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Do Firefighters Like to Set Fires? July 9, 2002 By ERICA GOODE Terry Lynn Barton was trained to spot the first glimmerings of fire in the Pike National Forest in Colorado, where she worked as a seasonal employee for the United States Forest Service. Leonard Gregg was a part-time firefighter on the Fort Apache Indian reservation in Arizona. So it was perhaps predictable that the arrest of Ms. Barton and Mr. Gregg, who are charged with starting the largest wildfires in the histories of their respective states, would revive the notion that firefighters and others whose work involves putting out fires were also more prone to set them. Arson, an environmentalist in the Northwest declared confidently in newspaper accounts after the arrests, is wildfire fighters' dirtiest little secret. A former fire department engineer in Arizona told a reporter that most arson fires were started by active or retired firefighters - a fact he said he had learned in his training. But forensic experts who study arsonists say there is no evidence to support the idea that firefighters are any more prone to sparking fires than anyone else. It's an urban myth, said Paul Schwartzman, an expert on juvenile fire setters and a member of the National Fire Protection Association's education board. They're no more highly represented than other groups. His assessment was echoed by Dr. David J. Icove, an engineer and arson specialist with the Tennessee Valley Authority police. Firefighters are no more drawn to arson than police officers are to crime, Dr. Icove said. To be sure, there are cases of fire professionals betraying their public mission, and some notorious ones at that. John Orr, an arson investigator and fire captain in Southern California, was convicted of setting three fires on his way home from a convention of his colleagues in 1987. Mr. Orr, now in prison, denied his guilt, but investigators found an unpublished novel he had written about an arson investigator who set fires. Paul Keller, the so-called Seattle arsonist, who ignited fires in the early 1990's, was a fire buff who tried hard to become a firefighter. Luckily, everybody turned him down, said Dr. Marcel Chappuis, a clinical psychologist who has studied arsonists and is a consultant to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. He said Mr. Keller would set fires and then time how long it took the fire department to arrive. He'd go right in the middle of two fire districts and see who got there first, the psychologist said. He knew all about engines and water capacity. During times of economic hardship - the Great Depression, for example - firefighters who were paid for hourly work set blazes to earn money: federal prosecutors in Arizona have claimed that Mr. Gregg, charged with igniting the brush and timber that started Arizona's Rodeo fire on June 18, did so for money. As a seasonal firefighter, his $8 an hour job depended on having fires to fight. Ms. Barton, a mother of two daughters who worked part-time for the forest service, told investigators she had in anger burned a letter from her estranged husband in a campfire ring, and the fire got out of control. Both Ms. Barton and Mr. Gregg have pleaded not guilty to setting the fires. Timothy G. Huff, a former analyst in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's profiling unit who works as a consultant to law enforcement groups, had little difficulty finding arson cases committed by firefighters for an F.B.I. study in 1994. The cases stood out so prominently to fire investigators that Mr. Huff had simply to do a little informal polling at training sessions across the country to collect his sample. The primary motive among the 75 firefighters, who alone or in groups were responsible for 182 fires, was a need for power and excitement, Mr. Huff found. Revenge was the most infrequent motive for arson, though in one case a volunteer firefighter torched a fire station, and in another a group of demoralized firefighters set fires to get back at their disliked chief. Yet the former F.B.I. analyst also disputed that firefighting and fire setting were linked in any systematic way. Of the million or so firefighters in the United States, Mr. Huff pointed out, only a tiny fraction are known to have committed arson, and no data exist indicating this number is disproportional. Still, neither Mr. Huff nor other experts were surprised that such an idea would exert a folkloric pull. People have a lot of misguided beliefs about arsonists, they said. Take the term pyromania, a label frequently used by law enforcement officials and in public discussions of fire setting. Pyromania also appears as a diagnostic category on the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders. Descriptions of people
[CTRL] On the Eve of Disconstruction
-Caveat Lector- From WSWS }}}Begin World Socialist Web Site www.wsws.org WSWS : News Analysis : North America On eve of Wall Street speech Bushs past business dealings come back to haunt him By Barry Grey 9 July 2002 Back to screen version| Send this link by email | Email the author On the eve of a much publicized speech to business executives on Wall Street, George W. Bush held an impromptu press conference Monday at which he was peppered with questions regarding his own dealings as a board member of Texas- based Harken Energy more than a decade ago. Even as he read a prepared statement pledging to take a tough stand against corporate law- breakers, Bush could not suppress his trademark smirk. Asked about the 1991 Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) probe into his sell-off of Harken stock only weeks before the company reported massive losses, Bush continued to stonewall. Nevertheless, he was clearly on the defensive. Bushs most significant remark came in response to a question about the growing wave of corporate scandals, which that very morning had hit yet another major US company, Merck Co. The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the drug giant had recorded $12.4 billion in revenue over the past three years that it had never collected. [I]m very worried about a country that could conceivably lose confidence in the free enterprise system, Bush told reporters. This admission was a stark expression of a growing sense of crisis within the Bush administration, concerning not only the short-term stability of the Republican White House, but also the long-term future of the profit system itself. The fear that the exposure of corporate criminality could fuel popular anger over the growth of social inequality and lead to the emergence of a political movement against the so-called free enterprise system is increasingly gripping the corporate and political establishment. It is one of the major factors behind the sudden proliferation of press reports and commentaries on Bushs personal business practices. White House spokesmen keep repeating that these are old issues that they thought had been settled long ago. These questions have reemerged, however, because the bursting of the stock market bubble and the collapse of corporate empires based on the wild inflation of share values and various forms of swindling and fraud have created a new climate of political crisis. The attacks on Bushs business record by sections of the media and influential economic commentators manifests a central aspect of this crisis: the emergence of sharp divisions within the upper reaches of the ruling elite over the policies of the Bush administration on a whole host of questions. Behind the scenes, conflicts are raging over the reckless and incendiary nature of Bushs initiatives, both at home and abroad. Concerns are mounting over the dangerous implications of Bushs military interventions, his increasingly provocative posture toward Europe, and the domestic implications of his policy of removing all restrictions on corporate profit-making. Powerful sections of the corporate establishment fear that the policies of the administration could lead to a crisis of catastrophic proportions. They have seized on Bushs personal misdeeds as a means of waging this covert political war in the public arena. This, however, does not diminish the intrinsic significance of the corrupt business dealings that are being exposed. What is involved in the record of Bushs corporate career is not some manufactured scandal, like the Whitewater affair. That relatively small-time real estate venture, which lost money, was seized on by right-wing opponents of the Clinton administration as the pretext for a political conspiracy aimed at bringing down the government. Bushs insider trading, on the other hand, was a real violation of securities laws, and it typified the type of practices that have become synonymous with Enron, Global Crossing, WorldCom and a string of other companies. Bush goes to Wall Street to lecture executives on business ethics under conditions in which a mountain of evidence demonstrates that he and virtually every other leading member of his administration personify in their own corporate careers the very methods he intends to denounce. White House spokesmen have said the president will use his Wall Street speech to reiterate his recent calls for corporate law-breakers to be prosecuted and for the worst offenders to be sent to a jail. The purpose of such statements is to placate growing popular anger over the systematic looting of the economy by the corporate elite. The idea is to make an example of a few swindlers, in order to divert attention from the pervasive thievery that has come to characterize American free enterprise. If Bush were serious, he might begin with his own Army Secretary, Thomas White, who was vice chairman of Enron Energy Services when it concealed hundreds of millions of dollars

Firefighters are no more drawn to arson than police officers are to crime, Dr. Icove said. an unfortunate comparison that supports rather than refutes the argument possibly... arsonists within the fire services are like paedophiles in the care services. if at all possible they seek the trust of their peers in as close an environment as they can be to their subject of interest. not sure about over there- in the article there was contrasting opinions about the stats- but over here in the uk there have been numerous incidents of chronic arsonists joining the fireservices and having a whale of a time. strange though, the combination of needs and desires in such situations. are they pulled in diffrent ways? the buzz of lighting a fire as opposed to the (seeming) desire to set it so that they can fight it and be heroic... and with paedophiles- certain of them seem to put themselves into positions of responsibility- and of public standing in the field in which they work. one might think that the proximity of the interest (fire or children) might be enough (to have access). but this pull on them (arrrogance?) to go further- to want some kind of public glory- or public respect from their peers is often their downfall. kinda sweet, but you wonder at the motivations of such people, regardless of their hateful interests. are they more ill or more cunning than the arsonist/paedophile who seeks access, but keep their head down so as not to raise suspicion? This week the American people sent a clear message to Washington that we must put politics aside and take real action on the real challenges facing are nation: saving Social Security for the 21st century, passing a patients' bill of rights, strengthening our schools by finishing the job of hiring 100,000 teachers and passing my plan to build or modernize 5,000 schools across our country. Over the past six years, we have taken real action to address another important challenge: making our communities safe for our families. For too long it seemed that rising crime was a frightening fact of life in America. In too many communities children could not play on the street or walk to school in safety, older Americans locked themselves in their homes with fear, and gangs armed with illegal guns boldly roamed our streets and schools. I took office determined to change this, committed to a comprehensive anti-crime strategy based on more community policing, tougher penalties, and better prevention. Today our strategy is showing remarkable results. We're ahead of schedule and under budget in meeting our goal of putting 100,000 police on the street. And all across America, crime rates have fallen to a 25-year low, respect for the law is on the rise, families are beginning to feel safe in their communities again. Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals has been at the center of our strategy, and an essential part of our success. Since I signed the Brady Law, after a big debate in Congress which was led in the House of Representatives by now Senator-elect Charles Schumer of New York, background checks have put a stop to nearly a quarter of a million handgun purchases by fugitives or felons. Law enforcement officers from around the country have told us that fewer guns on the street have made a huge difference in the lives of families they serve. At the end of this month, we will make the Brady Law even stronger. For the first time ever, we will require background checks for the purchase of any firearm, whether purchased from a licensed gun deal or a pawn shop. But under this new Insta-Check system, as it's called, we'll be able to run nearly twice as many background checks, and most of them in just a matter of minutes. We've spent five years working with state and local law enforcement to put this system in place, but when it comes to our families' safety, we must take another important step. Every year, an untold number of firearms are bought and sold at an estimated 5,000 gun shows around our country. I come from a state where these shows are very popular. I have visited and enjoyed them over the years. They're often the first place parents teach their children how to handle firearms safely. I know most gun dealers and owners are dedicated to promoting safe and legal gun use.
[CTRL] Bin Laden plans fresh terror for September
-Caveat Lector- http://www.observer.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,750967,00.html Bin Laden plans fresh terror for September Terrorism crisis - Observer special Jason Burke and Martin Bright SundayJuly 7, 2002 The Observer Terrorists are planning a series of spectacular attacks on American, British and Israeli targets to coincide with the anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Centre on 11 September last year. Intelligence agencies in the UK, southern Asia and the Middle East are detecting an increased volume of communications between suspected al-Qaeda cells as the organisation, led by the fugitive Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden, accelerates efforts to pull off a major operation in the days around the anniversary of the New York and Washington attacks. According to sources in Pakistan, al-Qaeda activists there have been given a three-month deadline to work with associates from local hardline Islamist organisations to target Western interests in the region. British intelligence sources told The Observer that the UK is third on the list of al-Qaeda's preferred targets - after the US and Israel, and confirmed last night that credible reports of planned al-Qaeda attacks had grown. 'The threat remains high and the background noise has been growing over recent weeks. It's a question of when, rather than if, they will attempt another spectacular,' said one Whitehall source. Western security agencies predominantly rely on communications intercepts, which they correlate with tip-offs from informers and information from questioning arrested suspects to alert them to forthcoming attacks. Increases in the volume of communications between known al-Qaeda suspects also suggest that action may be imminent. Abu Zubaydah, the top al-Qaeda operative arrested in March in Pakistan, has told his American interrogators that the terrorist group was planning a wide range of 'mass casualty attacks'. Bin Laden is believed to be hiding in the rugged mountains that line the frontier between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many of his followers remain in Pakistan. Last week four al-Qaeda gunmen and three paramilitary policemen died in a shoot-out near Kohat, on the borders of the semi- autonomous tribal areas where an estimated 300 al-Qaeda fighters are hiding. Investigators in Karachi, probing last month's bomb attack on the US consulate in the city, believe that al-Qaeda operatives are now linking up with local Islamic terror and crime groups to carry out their attacks. The new warning is the second such alert issued by intelligence services in the last seven months. The CIA and MI6 issued a warning at the end of last year after interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects in Camp X-Ray in Cuba revealed that the al-Qaeda high command had regrouped after the bombing of Afghanistan and was already planning attacks across the world. Moroccan intelligence sources told The Observer last month that they had been told by their American and British counterparts that al-Qaeda reconnaissance cells had been sent from Afghanistan after the bombing of the Tora Bora mountain HQ last December with detailed instructions to carry out attacks on Western and Jewish targets. As a result the Moroccans were last month able to foil a 'spectacular' designed to hit British and American troops in the Strait of Gibraltar by arresting a cell of three Saudi al-Qaeda operatives. Following the destruction of their support infrastructure in Afghanistan last autumn, bin Laden's operatives have dispersed throughout the region and into the Middle East. I'm wondering if it isn't mind-control? I made a brief comment with the article, let me expand here. The whole fire situation falls under the land-grab conspiracy theory: there is a conspiracy, led by NWO elites, to make large swaths of land in the western U.S. and Canada, off limits to humans, so the non-human animals will have a sacred place of their own. Wildfires, according to this conspiracy, are one of the main tools used in the process of land-grabbing, others being weather (Texas floods?) and gummint (CARA). Anyway, the elite land-grabbers, like all conspiratorial elites, need Manchurian Candidates, programmed sleepers, etc., to do their dirty work and then take the fall for it, leaving the elites in the clear and the public in the dark. So, as the theory goes, they program an arsonist, and then plant them in a job with, say, the Forest Service. The ManCan sets the fire, with the resulting property damage and human displacement; the ManCan comes forward and confesses to the crime, is led away never to be seen again, and some global elite steps in, buys the land for pennies on the dollar, and makes it permanently off-limits to humans. __ Do You Yahoo!? [CTRL] Chamish - More LAX
-Caveat Lector- http://www.rense.com/general26/cham_more.htm Chamish - More LAX By Barry Chamish [EMAIL PROTECTED] 7-8-2 We don't have much time. The El Al counter murders in Los Angeles are fast being covered up. Two days ago I presented preliminary evidence suggesting that the terror attack, was in fact, a bungled attempt to assassinate Shimon Peres' granddaughter. Peres inhabits a world of murder, and he has at least since he organized the Rabin assassination in 1995. His European circles want Israel to stop existing as a sovereign state and he was to be their blunt instrument of destruction. But Peres has been blackmailed over the Rabin murder and he has been mostly neutralized in Israel. His controllers are most unhappy with what they view as his betrayal of them and sought to exact vengeance against his beloved grandchild. A wild scenario? Let us review the evidence two days later. Translated from the Hebrew: Arutz Sheva, Friday, July 5 The shooter first took deliberate aim at the El Al hostess behind the counter, then turned back and shot at those in line. Witnesses at the scene reported that the shooter did not look Middle Eastern and he shouted, Artie took my job, I lost my job. The FBI added that no employee named Artie had worked recently for El Al in Los Angeles. FROM Inyan Mercazi, [www.news-israel.net], a Hebrew website: PERES' GRANDDAUGHTER WAS BESIDE THE COUNTER AT THE TIME OF THE ATTACK. Shimon Peres' granddaughter Michal Valden was right beside the El Al counter at the time of the Los Angeles attack. Valden and her (girl) friend were arranging to board the flight to Toronto and from there return to Israel. The moment the attack begin, she called her family in Israel to report on the incident. So it is no surprise that Shimon Peres was the first to declare it a terror attack. LA Attacker Claims Two Lives At El Al Desk (IsraelNN.com) While FBI officials stated it was too early to know for certain if it was a terror attack, Israeli security officials stated it was being treated as an act of terror. Late last night, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres stated with certainty it was a terror attack. *** THE DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN BEGINS AND QUICKLY ALL early reports of the shooting have a 52 year old caucasian with a ponytail doing the deed. Since the blame fell on a 41 year old dark Egyptian named Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, rumors were spread that the reports about a blonde man doing the shooting came from a caller to CNN who pranked them. He was making a reference to the Howard Stern Show, and gave a description of one Jackie The Jokeman, a former Stern sidekick. Then it became quickly clear that Hadayet had no criminal background, was not known to belong to any political organizations and was friendly to his Jewish neighbors. So a new picture was spread through the highly iffy Debka.com that not only was Hadayet an active member of Egyptian Jihad, the group that tried to knock down the World Trade Center in 1990 but was bosom buddies with the Air Egypt co-pilot who allegedly crashed his passenger jet into the Atlantic in 1999. My, my, such wide circles. This morning, Israel radio announced, on top of all this, that Hadayet was also a member of Hamas. The humble limo driver sure got around, didn't he? Shall we try to cut through the lies and sort out the truth through media reports and those of my brilliant correspondents? From Texas, a diligent researcher has located Dr. David Parkus, who tried to revive Hadayet:*** OK, I'm trying to figure this incident out: First, there is only 1 Parkus in the Texas Dept. of Public Safety database of driver's licenses (www.publicdata.com) and kevdb.infospace.com listing of phone numbers: David Parkus 3985 North St Beaumont, TX 77706 409-898-1302 (Beaumont is 100 miles east of Houston, on the Louisiana border.) (What was he doing in LA on his way to Israel? Most Texans go to JFK to connect to El Al.) Next, why did the Egyptian show up at the airport if he was not anti-Israel? Could it be that he was hired under the pretense of picking someone up? Could there really have been a white/blonde pony-tailed man who did the shooting, and, this limo-driver was setup as the shooter? Were the weapons planted on him during the wrestling match with the first security guard while the real shooter left? Was he shot while on the ground to prevent him from giving his side of the story? Maybe the doctor can give some details. Also, you should call Arutz-7's Mordechai Shenker and ask who was the person he interviewed, during the Phil Chernovsky Torah Tidbits show, who claimed to be an on-the-scene eyewitness and saw the blonde, white shooter? I'm really baffled by this! *** Another correspondent adds yet another witness who saw the blonde shooter. *** In case you did not see this and nobody else has told you: Several hours after the shooting there was a live interview of a security guard from the air counter next to El Al, on CNN. They only showed the

Brian told me that he knows Murphy very well. Murphy lost his business a few years back and currently works for a gold marketing organization. Murphy's job is to stimulate interest in gold. All this supposed objective data about the manipulation of the gold market has a business purpose behind it. I have nothing against Bill Murphy. However, he should disclose his affiliations and motives. --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Golgbug [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: FTW Economic Alert - Global Economic Collapse Imminent, Pension Fund Disaster: Stocks, Dollar to Free Fall, Gold to SkyrocketThe investment banker who stated that the gold paper market was a 5x multiple of the physical gold market was, I imagine, using the official gold market stats for current above ground stocks of around 140,000 metric tonnes. GATA along with most others continue to turn a blind eye to the fact that the physical market has a great deal more gold available to it than a multiple of 5x. Estimates of how much physical gold actually exists (as opposed to what is said to officially exist) vary enormously because, simply put, it is a secret. My own view, and that of others who have investigated the black gold market consider that a multiple of 9x or 10x to be realistic, although there is no way to prove this is the case. It remains a secret. However, as an indicator to what is really out there the following may be germane. Beginning 1945 the OSS (and later the CIA) began recovering gold buried in the Philippines by the Japanese Golden Lily plunder teams. In a few short years a dozen or more plunder sites were recovered. All were 777 sites, which is to say that Japanese accountants had estimated their 1944/5 value as being 777 billion yen. The exchange rate for 1944/5 was around 3.50 to 4.00 yen to the dollar. Thus a triple seven Golden Lilly plunder site had a 1944/5 dollar value of almost $200 billion. Multiply that by a dozen and you have $2.4 trillion. The number of burial sites on the Philippines alone totalled 176. I understand that somewhere in the region of 40 of these were 777 sites. Others were 999 and many were in the triple five category or lower. This does not include WWII plunder buried in Indonesia and elsewhere - also subject to recovery. Admittedly these figure are not composed solely of gold value since the treasure sites also contained an assortment of other plunder ranging from platinum and some silver through to precious jade etc. They also contained oil drums overflowing with loose, gem quality diamonds... something like 150,000 carats per drum. Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but like gold they simply are not as rare as De Beers wants you to believe. In fact they are not that rare at all. A mining company survey conducted on the Argyle diamond mine in Australia's outback, estimated that the top 200 metres of the mine contained 800 billion carats - mostly gem quality. This is in
[CTRL] Red Cross
-Caveat Lector- From http://www.tetrahedron.org/articles/apocalypse/red_double_cross.html }}}Begin The American Red Double-cross By Dr. Len Horowitz Sandpoint, Idaho-The American Red Cross (ARC) is widely considered a great American institution. It is generally thought of as among the world's premier humanitarian organizations. Clearly, almost everyone thinks of it as a life-saving agency. Most people know this non-governmental organization (NGO) to be heavily dependant upon the blood and currency generously donated by the American people. But, what if all of the above is untrue? What if everything you think you know about the American Red Cross is a ghastly nauseating lie? My name is Dr. Leonard Horowitz. What I am about to share with you is deeply disturbing, yet potentially life-saving. The American Red Cross is not what it appears to be. . . . And I urge you to continue reading so that you learn what the ARC really represents. Let me begin by telling you a bit about myself, and about my bias. For the past ten years I have been conducting health science and U.S. Government cover-up investigations as an independent, Harvard-trained, award-winning medical journalist and internationally recognized authority in public health. To briefly summarize my training, in 1977 I received my doctorate in medical dentistry from Tufts University in Boston. I later received several advanced degrees... One in public health from Harvard University. I joined the faculties at Tufts University and Harvard. I directed an alternative health center for more than a decade. In the early 1980s, the Associated Press featured my work as a trendsetter. My clinic integrated dentistry with general medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, massage, homeopathy, and other alternative methods of healing. Between 1990 and 1993 I personally trained nearly 30,000 healthcare professionals in dental and medical infection control according to OSHA standards. At that time I was the chief professional advisor for the largest dental and medical catalog supply company in the world. In 1999, I won the prestigious Author of the Year Award from the World Natural Health Organization for my tenth book. This became my first bestseller. It is called Emerging Viruses: AIDS Ebola-Nature, Accident or Intentional? Government health officials have said this book is largely responsible for America's rapidly growing anti- vaccination movement. The blood banking industry is meticulously explored here as well. For my work in exposing the global military-medical-industrial complex, I have been christened, the King David of alternative medicine versus the omnipotent Goliath of slash, burn, and poison medicine by consumer health advocates. Suffice it to say, I have been extremely critical of petrochemical/pharmaceutical/blood banking industrialists for suppressing more information than they have been telling... Including potentially lifesaving information that could stem the rising epidemics of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and much, much more.. . . In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, unlike most Americans, I was appalled by the outpouring of support, not as much to the families of the attack victims, but to the American Red Cross as a go-between. Based on the information and documentation I published in Emerging Viruses: AIDS Ebola-Nature, Accident or Intentional?, certain individuals that control the ARC are, in fact, as much to blame for the terrorist attacks on America, and America's New War, as Osama bin Ladin and Afghanistan's Taliban government. Before you call me crazy and junk this premise entirely, let me explain by giving you a little background on the people who run the American Red Cross. This is little preview of my American bestseller. Background Intelligence on the American Red Cross Founded in 1881 by American humanitarian Clara Barton, the American Red Cross (officially named The American National Red Cross) was first chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1900. A second charter, still in force, was granted in 1905. Not long after, however, John D. Rockefeller pirated the entire blood banking industry, along with the administrative leadership of the ARC. As you will soon learn, this quintessential coup de tats represented more than a glorious economic opportunity. The takeover of the ARC, and the entire blood industry, was apparently required to fulfill a far more sinister, even occult-linked, political objective-eugenics management for a racially purified planet. To begin, during this time, John D. Rockefeller and his associates were making a concerted effort to control the entire field of medicine in America. During the 1890s, Rockefeller interests in medical education and scientific medicine were spearheaded by Frederick T. Gates, John D. Rockefeller's investment manager. 1901 saw the founding of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. In 1902,

Highlights of the press conference are excerpted below: As a Jew I am very disturbed that I am being deported essentially for witnessing the collective punishment the Israeli army is perpetrating on the Palestinian civilians of Balata Refugee Camp. Israel's claim to be the only democracy in the Middle East does not bear out. In a democracy a judge can rule only after reviewing and considering all the facts and circumstances and evidence. The Minister of the Interior of the State of Israel appears omnipotent and whatever that office decrees stands. How is this democratic? Deporting peace activists makes a clear and strong statement to the world community that Israel is NOT interested in peace. I only hope that international governments will open their ears and eyes to help put a stop to the oppressive, racist and deadly conditions the Palestinian people face in their daily lives. ---Darlene Wallach, USA To the best of our knowledge, at least 1000 people have been prevented from entering Israel since April 1st, 2002, many for carrying medical supplies or having affiliations to humanitarian organizations. Over 50 people who were able to enter Israel and Palestine to work with humanitarian organizations have been deported. We are the first individuals faced with a deportation order, under these circumstances, who have appealed it. At no time were we informed of our rights by the Israeli police or prison authorities, and the prison attempted to prevent us from seeing our lawyer until after we had come before a judge. When I was before the judge, she attempted to tell me that I could not appeal. We insisted on our right to appeal and succeeded in getting the case to a higher court. We will now pursue the case to the Supreme Court of Israel. ---Josi Sandercock, UK On Monday the 1st of July Eric Levine, Brian Dominick and myself were traveling to Nablus. When we tried to enter the city we were arrested along with two Palestinian men. Our IDs, Passports, phones, films and tapes were all confiscated then we were told that the police were going to pick us up and take us to Israel. While we were waiting for this to happen we were held outside a building captured by the Israeli military. We waited for 48 hours, the police never came and we were eventually released outside Huwara military base with no explanation of capture. During our detention we had no protection from the heat during the day or cold at night. We were given ! food at arbitrary times and didn't have access to toilet. The soldiers repeatedly refused to let us phone anyone or make phone calls on our behalf, including to our Consulates. This event has increased my personal motivation to record what is happening in the occupied West Bank. ---Peter Blacker, UK The past year and a half has witnessed a growing phenomenon of international civilians leaving their homes to come to the Occupied Palestinian Territories to witness, assist and otherwise join and stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle against the brutality of occupation and oppression. Despite the efforts of the Israeli government to break this phenomenon and to keep shut the eyes of the world, the International Solidarity Movement calls on all peoples not to be intimidated. This summer the ISM will be welcoming hundreds of foreign civilians to the Occupied Palestinian Territories to join hands and raise voices against! occupation. In the past two weeks alone we have welcomed and trained over 90 international peace activists and currently have an international presence in Nablus, Jenin, Gaza, Ramallah and Hebron (including surrounding villages). The voices of truth, justice and love of humanity will overcome. The good people of the world, however, must not stay silent. The 1000+ international civilians that have thus far joined us (in the past few months alone) are a shining example of civilians taking the lead and acting on the basis of justice and right, when the leaders fail to do so. ---Huwaida Arraf, INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT Organizer To find out more about joining us in Palestine, please see www.palsolidarity.org For questions or comments about

Note: The last time FTW issued an emergency economic bulletin to its subscribers was Sept. 9. At that time a derivatives investment bubble on the verge of implosion, a 900-point drop in the Dow Jones average and a pending liquidity crisis signaled a crash on the order of 1929. Only the attacks of Sept. 11 and massive intervention from the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve prevented the collapse. Investors blamed the ensuing market losses on the attacks. The situation now is much, much worse as more factors combine to suggest that foreign investors and trust in the U.S. economy might soon be a thing of the past. Your pension is at risk today and your home may be at risk in six months to a year. One economic analyst has suggested that a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan might be the perfect cover for the biggest financial wipe out in human history. I think that an ill-conceived and risky invasion of Iraq might serve the same purpose. From consumer confidence, to corporate accounting, to the dollar, to gold, to foreign capital flight, to pension fund wipe outs, to the derivative bubble, to debt, there is not a single economic indicator that is not flashing red. The warnings are as clear, explicit and well-documented as were the warnings received by the U.S. government throughout summer 2001 that a terrorist attack against the World Trade Center would take place during the week of Sept. 9 using hijacked airliners from United and American airlines. Nothing was done to prevent that and apparently nothing is being done now in spite of the fact that $4.2 trillion of your money has been stolen right in front of your eyes. There was no single reason for the attacks of 9-11. I have cited oil, drug cash and geopolitics as three of the primary motives for the U.S. governments complicity in allowing the attacks to happen. But what also cannot be overlooked is the fact that 9-11 effectively masked a major economic crash that was certain to occur. That crash has not been averted by the extraordinary financial maneuverings of the Bush administration that followed 9-11. It was merely postponed for a very short time.--MCR ] July 8, 2002, 4 PM PDT (FTW) -- Reuters, London published a story June 27 based upon an interview with billionaire financier George Soros. The headline reaad, Soros Blames Bush Factor for Dollars Fall. George Soros is a man to be reckoned with. Emerging from WWII as someone who allegedly cooperated with Nazi occupation troops by identifying assets to be seized, the European financier is one of the most powerful financiers on the planet. He is credited with successfully assaulting the currencies of several nations, including Britains pound. He recently participated in the World Economic Forum in New York where he was seated on the dais with the likes of Zbigniew Brzezinski, Hillary Clinton, Shimon Peres and academics from Ivy League colleges. It is more than just a case that when Soros speaks, people listen. The truth is that when Soros speaks, markets move. His comments were brutal.
[CTRL] An Israeli officer's response to Bush
-Caveat Lector- http://metimes.com/2K2/issue2002-27/opin/an_israeli_officers.htm An Israeli officer's response to Bush By Shamai Leibowitz TEL AVIV I am an Orthodox Jew and a criminal defense attorney in Tel Aviv. I am also a tank gunner in reserve duty, and part of a group of 1,000 soldiers who have refused to serve in the occupied territories. Many of them were imprisoned in military jails in the past few months. Now that President George W. Bush has enlightened us with his new 'Plan' for the Middle East, we can only wonder how long it will take him to realize that his plan is useless and meaningless. Although his speech was riddled with rosy descriptions he envisions for the utopian Palestinian State in the far future, Bush managed to avoid any mention of the present situation in the same parcel of land where all these wonderful things are to materialize. No mention of the fact that all West Bank cities had been invaded by Israeli military forces; that hundreds of thousands of inhabitants are imprisoned in their homes by a strict curfew, and that civilians appearing on city streets are being shot at like dogs by Israeli tanks and Apache helicopters. His failure to understand that no progress can be made while a whole nation is being brutally occupied is the basic flaw in his policy, and serves as the best explanation why his Middle East plans have consistently become colossal failures. Bush's delusional thinking that he can change the Palestinian leadership by delivering a speech is mind-boggling. The American president thinks he can just do away with any leader in the world he dislikes. This kind of thinking is going to cost us a lot of bloodshed. It is only a matter of time until Bush's 'new outline' will turn to ashes as the flames in this region reach higher and higher. Instead of offering a glimmer of hope, his plans resemble the famous Biblical burning bush, i.e. more of the same (see Exodus 3:2). This means more Israeli occupation, which will result in more terror and more fatalities. Clearly, the terror attacks are abhorrent. They have no justification in any sane polity. However, no amount of condemnation will stop them. Bush fails to comprehend that the suicide bombings are a product of mass starvation and humiliation of the Palestinian people. Bush's aides are doing us so much harm by refusing to acknowledge that only an immediate end to the Israeli occupation will bring an immediate end to the Palestinian uprising. We are now witnessing a situation in which 3.5 million people have no future, no hope, no vision, other than to become terrorists and avenge the continued harassment and shelling by the Israeli army's helicopters, tanks and artillery. While Bush has no knowledge of this region, we have been living here, watching how the Palestinians were trampled and denied basic rights on a daily basis, besieged and occupied in every possible way. Our Jewish sources teach us that where there is no justice, there is no peace. The idea behind the Oslo accords, namely that we could 'negotiate' a peace agreement while remaining the occupying power, has proven to be romantic nonsense. Can you expect a rape victim to negotiate with her attacker? Can you expect a slave to negotiate with his master a 'contract of freedom?' Most Israelis know deep in their hearts that once we stop humiliating and oppressing this nation, we will become a safe and secure democratic Israel living next to a viable Palestinian state. Most intelligent people in the world understand that the Palestinians had a right to a state of their own many years ago. And there should have been an Israeli-Palestinian border marking the two completely separate sovereign states. There is only one institution in the world that is blind to this: the Israeli government. This means it is up to us, Israeli soldiers, to defend ourselves, defend ourselves from our government. And this can only be done through refusal to participate in the occupation. It is our opinion that an Israeli soldier refusing to dominate and starve millions of Palestinians is defending his state in the best possible way. The reason is simple: If enough soldiers refuse, we will eventually force our government to relinquish its death-grip on the West Bank and Gaza. And this will save thousands of lives. In a famous passage in the Talmud, it is said: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" After Bush showed us how warped his understanding of reality is, he's left it to us to save our nation from its complete demise. We will push Bush aside, and do the job ourselves. We, the refusal movement, will continue to grow until thousands of Israeli soldiers say enough is enough. Then this land, which has been a battleground for so many years, will become a place of refuge, vision and hope for all its inhabitants. [CTRL] Fisk: Threat To Liberty From New Fundamentalism
-Caveat Lector- http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=313235 A strange kind of freedom We all know about the perils of Islamic fanaticism. But, says Robert Fisk, the biggest threat to liberty in the US may come from other kinds of fundamentalism: Jewish and Christian 09 July 2002 Inside the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, the Californian audience had been struck silent. Dennis Bernstein, the Jewish host of KPFA Radio's Flashpoint current affairs programme, was reading some recent e-mails that he had received from Israel's supporters in America. Each one left the people in the church â Muslims, Jews, Christians â in a state of shock. "You mother-fucking-asshole-self-hating Jewish piece of shit. Hitler killed the wrong Jews. He should have killed your parents, so a piece of Jewish shit like you would not have been born. God willing, Arab terrorists will cut you to pieces Daniel Pearl-style, AMEN!!!" Bernstein's sin was to have covered the story of Israel's invasion of Jenin in April and to have interviewed journalists who investigated the killings that took place there â including Phil Reeves and Justin Huggler of The Independent â for his Flashpoint programme. Bernstein's grandfather was a revered Orthodox Rabbi of international prominence but neither his family history nor his origins spared him. "Read this and weep, you mother-fucker self-hating Jew boy!!!" another e-mail told Bernstein. "God willing a Palestinian will murder you, rape your wife and slash your kids' throats." Yet another: "I hope that you, Barbara Lubin and all other Jewish Marxist Communist traitors anti-American cop haters will die a violent and cruel death just like the victims of suicide bombers in Israel." Lubin is also Jewish, the executive director of the Middle East Children's Alliance, a one-time committed Zionist but now one of Israel's fiercest critics. Her e-mails are even worse. Indeed, you have to come to America to realise just how brave this small but vocal Jewish community is. Bernstein is the first to acknowledge that a combination of Israeli lobbyists and conservative Christian fundamentalists have in effect censored all free discussion of Israel and the Middle East out of the public domain in the US. "Everyone else is terrified," Bernstein says. "The only ones who begin to open their mouths are the Jews in this country. You know, as a kid, I sent money to plant trees in Israel. But now we are horrified by a government representing a country that we grew up loving and cherishing. Israel's defenders have a special vengeance for Jews who don't fall in line behind Sharon's scorched-earth policy because they give the lie to the charge that Israel's critics are simply anti-Semite." Adam Shapiro is among those who have paid a price for their beliefs. He is a Jew engaged to an American-born Palestinian, a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement who was trapped in Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the spring while administering medical aid. After telling CNN that the Sharon government was acting like "terrorists" while receiving $3bn a year in US military aid, Shapiro and his family were savaged in the New York Post. The paper slandered Shapiro as the "Jewish Taliban" and demeaned his family as "traitors". Israeli supporters publicised his family's address and his parents were forced to flee their Brooklyn home and seek police protection. Shapiro's father, a New York public high-school teacher and a part-time Yeshiva (Jewish day school) teacher, was fired from his job. His brother receives regular death threats. Israel's supporters have no qualms about their alliance with the Christian right. Indeed, the fundamentalists can campaign on their own in Israel's favour, as I discovered for myself at Stanford recently when I was about to give a lecture on the media and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, part of a series of talks arranged largely by Jewish Americans. A right-wing Christian "Free Republic" outfit posted my name on its website, and described me as a "PLO butt-kisser" and asked its supporters to "freep" my lecture. A few demonstrators turned up outside the First United Methodist Church in Sacramento where I was to speak, waving American and Israeli flags. "Jew haters!" they screamed at the organisers, a dark irony since these were non-Jews shrieking their abuse at Jews. They were also handing out crudely printed flyers. "Nothing to worry about, Bob," one of my Jewish hosts remarked. "They can't even spell your name right." True. But also false. "Stop the Lies!" the leaflet read. "There was no massacre in Jenin. Fiske [sic] is paid big bucks to spin [lie] for the Arabs..." But the real lie was in that last sentence. I never take any payment for lectures â so that no one can ever claim that I'm paid to give the views of others. But the truth didn't matter to these people. Nor did the content of my talk â which began, by chance, with the words "There was no

-Caveat Lector- http://www.judicialwatch.org/2088.shtml EMBARGOED UNTIL JULY 10 Jul 9, 2002 Contact: Press Office 202-646-5172 VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY SUED PERSONALLY FOR ALLEGED STOCK FRAUD Alleged Fraudulent Accounting Practices Occurred At Halliburton PRESS CONFERENCE Date: July 10, 2002 Time: 9:00 A.M. Location: Sheraton Hotel Parlor 1, 495 Brickell Ave Miami, FL (Washington, D.C.) Judicial Watch, the group that investigates and prosecutes corruption by government officials, announced today that it is filing a shareholders suit in Dallas, Texas, against Vice President Dick Cheney and the other involved directors of Halliburton, as well as Halliburton itself, for alleged fraudulent accounting practices which resulted in the overvaluation of the companyâs shares, thereby deceiving investors and others. The suit comes one day after President George W. Bush, who himself is enmeshed in allegations of insider trading when he was an executive, who sat on the audit committee of Harken Energy Company, announced a âplanâ to crack down on corporate fraud. Ironically, it would appear that the Presidentâs rush to propose more regulation of private industry is intended to deflect attention away from his and his Vice Presidentâs own alleged improper business practices. President Bush has maintained that he was cleared by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Others have countered that the head of the agency was then an appointee of his father, President George H.W.Bush. President Clinton and the Democratic Party used a similar gambit when they were caught taking money illegally from foreign donors, including the Communist Chinese. Instead of prosecuting vigorously the Clintons and other guilty politicians, new campaign finance laws were proposed to deflect attention away from alleged crimes. âWhether it is the Enron, Arthur Andersen, Global Crossing, or now the Halliburton and Harken scandals, there is a dangerous intersection between politicians of all stripes, Democrat and Republican, attempting to feed at the trough of business greed. As is true of the Clinton scandals, the American people cannot look the other way just because the President and Vice President are allegedly involved. Indeed, Judicial Watch has already sued Democrat and Republican officials in the Enron and Global Crossing scandals. To look the other way for the Vice President would be to set a precedent that the Washington elite are above the law. This cannot be permitted if our democracy is to survive,â stated Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman. In 1995 Halliburton was prosecuted and forced to plead guilty to trading with Libya, a terrorist state on the U.S. watch list. A press conference will be held in Miami at 9:00 A.M. at the Sheraton Hotel at 495 Brickell Avenue to announce and detail this suit. James A. Traficant requested be studied last July. Congressman Traficant ordered the GAO study following the urging of an HIV-positive attorney and former Youngstown resident, Boyd E. Graves, who persuaded the legislator that a flow chart accompanying lengthy National Cancer Institute (NCI) Special Virus Cancer Program reports was a smoking gun. According to Dr. Leonard Horowitz, the author of an American bestseller, Emerging Viruses: AIDS EbolaNature, Accident or Intentional?(Tetrahedron Press, 1996), the book that Graves credits for his discovery of the flow chart, the primary question Graves raised, and GAO investigators asked, was fundamentally absurd. Mr. Graves was delusional when he conceived the notion that a single flow chart represented definite proof that the AIDS virus had been constructed by government contractors. Far more relevant questions would have been, How was it that HIV/AIDS was able to simultaneously outbreak on two far removed continents, in two demographically distinct populations, other than through contaminated vaccines? Most scientists respect this question. Next, Was there any links between firms that used gay men in New York City and Blacks in central Africa in the early to mid 1970s as subjects for questionable cancer virus vaccine experiments, and the contamination of those vaccines with HIV sequences or AIDS-like viruses found in the laboratories that supplied chimpanzees used in the vaccine production process? Evidencing the affirmative to these questions is absolutely certain and definitive, Dr. Horowitz said. Dr. Horowitzs research of SVCP contracts proves that Litton Bioneticsa top U.S. biological weapons contractor, monkey supplier for vaccine producers, chief administrator of the NCI during the period in question, and the principle overseer of the SVCPwas contracted to produce numerous viruses that were descriptively and functionally identical to the AIDS virus, HIV, as early as 1968. Whether their viral productions were genetically similar to HIV is a matter for serious inquiry. Graves cited a number of experts, including Dr. Horowitz, who he claimed supported his case. However, according to Janet Heinrich, the GAOs director of health care and public health issues, none of the experts actually supported Gravess theory. Of course we were unable to support Gravess theory, Dr. Horowitz said. It was bogus from the start, and I told him [Graves] so. What Graves directed the government investigators to ask is, Does the SVCP flow chart prove that HIV/AIDS was manufactured by a government lab? There were dozens of SVCP contracts that had nothing to do with developing a special virus like HIV/AIDS. Some contracts did, but they were not central to the GAOs focus. Graves had everyone focusing on a complex and largely unintelligible flow chart. I told him from the beginning he was making a fatal error, that his misdirection would help the GAO whitewash the matter, and that his actions and GAO report would undermine future serious scientific inquiries into the most revealing evidence. And thats precisely what
[CTRL] LAX Shooting: Was LA International Airport shooting, in fact, good news?
-Caveat Lector- I don't know about this headline Tenorlove http://jewishworldreview.com/0702/jkelly.html Jewish World Review July 9, 2002 / 29 Tamuz, 5762 Jack Kelly Was LA International Airport shooting, in fact, good news? http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | At 11:29 a.m. local time on July 4, Hessan Mohammed Hadayat, a resident alien from Egypt, approached the ticket counter for El Al airlines at Los Angeles International Airport. He killed a woman behind the counter, then turned his guns on customers waiting in line, killing one and wounding four before he was shot by security guards. The FBI thinks this was an isolated incident. Israeli officials are not so sure. It seems like a terrorist attack and it looks like a terrorist attack, said Yuval Rotem, the Israeli consul-general in Los Angeles. If the FBI is right, then the Fourth of July came and went with no organized terror attacks on Americans. That's good news. If the Israelis are right, and Hadayat's attack was part of an internationally-planned campaign of terror, that's better news. Constant terror warnings have had an impact on public opinion. A recent poll indicated only a third of Americans think we're winning the war on terror. But we're surely not losing. There have been no successful attacks on Americans at home or abroad since Sept. 11. This may simply be because the terrorists are biding their time. There typically has been a lapse of a year or so between major al Qaida operations. The Khobar Towers barracks in Saudi Arabia was bombed on June 25, 1996. U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed on Aug 7, 1998. The USS Cole was attacked in the port of Aden on Oct 12, 2000. But it may also be because the capacity of al Qaida to mount large scale operations has been crippled. Since Sept. 11 al Qaida has lost its base in Afghanistan. Pakistan has gone from supporting the Taliban to fighting terrorists...at least on alternate Tuesdays. And there has been a crackdown on al Qaida cells in Europe. This is significant, because the evidence suggests most of the major al Qaida operations were planned in Europe. The United States has yet to capture Osama bin Laden or his top deputy, Ayman al Zawahiri. This is considered by many to be a defeat for America, especially since there is credible evidence to suggest bin Laden could have been captured at Tora Bora in eastern Afghanistan in early December. But neither bin Laden nor al Zawahiri have been heard from since early December. The Arabic Sahab website said last month bin Laden would release a video on July 4. He didn't. Bin Laden is politically dead even if he isn't physically dead, argued Amir Taheri, who writes for the Arab News, an English-language daily in Saudi Arabia. With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long, Taheri wrote July 5. He had always liked to take credit even for things he had nothing to do with. So, would he have remained silent for none months during which his illusions have been shattered one after another? If his adjutants can smuggle a video to al-Jazeera in Qatar, why couldn't he? We do know the whereabouts of the numbers three and four in al Qaida. Mohammed Atef is dead. Abu Zubaydah is in custody. So are hundreds of lesser fry. Only two successful terrorist operations have been attributed to al Qaida since Sept. 11. Pakistan blames al Qaida for a car bombing outside a Karachi hotel May 7 that killed 10 French naval officers. Al Qaida has claimed responsibility for the bombing of a synogogue in Tunisia April 11 that killed 21, most of them German tourists. These successes were counterproductive. No Americans or Israelis were hurt in these bombings, the effect of which was to cause France and Germany to cooperate more with the United States. Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, was caught trying to blow up an airliner. Jose Padilla, aka Abdullah al-Muhajir, was nabbed scouting sites for a dirty bomb attack. Because neither of these guys are among the brightest bulbs in the chandelier, there was speculation they were being deliberately dangled. But it could also be this is the best al Qaida has left. This is why it would be good news if Hessan Hadayat turns out to be a member of an international terror group. If his attack is the most devastating al Qaida can muster these days, we're doing better than most of us imagine. __ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! [CTRL] LAX Shooting: Daniel Pipes: A 'work dispute' at LAX?
-Caveat Lector- http://jewishworldreview.com/0702/pipes.html Jewish World Review July 9, 2002 / 29 Tamuz, 5762 A 'work dispute' at LAX? By Daniel Pipes http://www.jewishworldreview.com | On the 4th of July last week, an Egyptian immigrant to the United States who believes in wild conspiracy theories about Jews, is known for his great hate for Israel, and has possible ties to Al-Qaeda, armed himself to the teeth and assaulted the Israeli airline counter at Los Angeles International Airport, killing two. It is obvious why Hesham Mohamed Ali Hadayet targeted Jews in a highly visible place on so prominent a date: to engage in terrorism against Israel. But one important institution - the U.S. government - claims not to know Hadayet's goals. An FBI spokesman has said that there's nothing to indicate terrorism. Another FBI official said of Hadayet: It appears he went there with the intention of killing people. Why he did that we are still trying to determine. Possible causes named include a work dispute and a hate crime. Sure, law enforcement should not jump to conclusions, but this head-in-the-clouds approach is ridiculous. It also fits a well-established pattern. Consider three cases of terrorism in the New York City area: Rashid Baz, a Lebanese cab driver with a known hatred for all things Israeli and Jewish, armed himself to the teeth in March 1994 and drove around the city looking for a Jewish target. He found his victims - a van full of Hassidic boys - on the Brooklyn Bridge and fired a hail of bullets against them, killing one boy. And how did the FBI classify this crime? As road rage. Only because the murdered boy's mother relentlessly fought this false description did the bureau finally in 2000 re-classify the murder as the crimes of a terrorist. Ali Hasan Abu Kamal, a Palestinian gunman hailing from militant Islamic circles in Florida, took a gun to the top of the Empire State building in February 1997 and shot a tourist there. His suicide note accused the United States of using Israel as its instrument against the Palestinians but city officials ignored this evidence and instead dismissed Abu Kamal as either one deranged individual working on his own (Police Commissioner Howard Safir) or a man who had many, many enemies in his mind (Mayor Rudolph Giuliani). Gamil al-Batouti, an EgyptAir copilot, yelled I put my faith in G-d's hands as he crashed a plane leaving Kennedy airport in October 1999, killing 217. Under Egyptian pressure, the National Transportation Safety Board report shied away from once mentioning Batouti's possible terrorist motives. And despite all the world-has-changed rhetoric following the horrors of last September, Western officialdom continues to pretend terrorism away. Damir Igric, a Croat immigrant from the former Yugoslavia, used a box cutter to slash the neck of a Greyhound bus driver in Tennessee last October, causing the bus to roll over, killing six passengers and himself. Although this bus-hijacking scenario echoed similar attacks by Palestinians on Israeli buses, the FBI immediately classified it an isolated incident and not an act of terrorism. The media attributed the violence to post-traumatic stress syndrome. Hassan Jandoubi, an Islamist with possible connections to Al-Qaeda, had started working at the AZF fertilizer factory in suburban Toulouse, France, just days before a massive explosion took place there last Sept. 21. This, the worst catastrophe ever in a French chemical plant, killed Jandoubi and 29 others, injured 2,000, destroyed 600 dwellings, and damaged 10,000 buildings. The autopsy revealed that Jandoubi was wearing two pairs of trousers and four pairs of underpants, which the coroner compared to what is worn by Islamic militants going into battle or on suicide missions. Also, the chemical plant was processing ammonium nitrate, a stable chemical that requires a substantial infusion of energy to explode. Ignoring these signs, the French authorities declared there was no shred of evidence of the explosion being a terrorist act and ruled it an accident. They even prosecuted two publications merely for calling Jandoubi a radical Islamist, making them pay tens of thousands of dollars in fines to Jandoubi's heirs, a mosque, and a Muslim organization for their defamation of Jandoubi. Work dispute, hate crime, road rage, derangement, post-traumatic stress, industrial accident ... these expressions of denial obstruct effective counterterrorism. The time has come for governments to catch up with the rest of us and call terrorism by its rightful name. JWR contributor Daniel

Both political groups agree that they are living so well in the Kurdish province of Iraq â especially compared to the Iranian Kurds and the Turkish Kurds â that any move they make to support a "regime change" in order to make Washington happy will be noted by Baghdad. As in the past, they worry that Washington could shift political gears at a moment's notice and they will be left holding the bag. You mentioned how, at the end of the Gulf War in 1991, the Bush administration and the CIA encouraged the Kurds to rebel against the weakened regime in Baghdad, thinking it would be a piece of cake to finally win independence for their piece of Kurdistan. When Saddam showed he still had the muscle to put down the uprising, as Fidel Castro had put down the Bay of Pigs in 1961, the rebels spilled a lot of blood as Washington decided it had other priorities. Going back even further, recall that Saddam Hussein and the Shah of Iran cut a deal in Algiers during the Cold War, with Henry Kissinger looking on. Saddam made concessions to Iran on a waterway in exchange for the Shah cracking down on the Iranian Kurds, who were coming across the border to stir up trouble with the Iraqi Kurds. A little bit of history might be helpful to you, as I see you did not mention the good deal the Iraqi Kurds got from Uncle Sam in 1996, which is really the source of the "Golden Era." It was in September 1996, remember, that President Clinton bombed Iraq for having violated the "No Fly Zone" that covers a good bit of the Kurdish province, including the capital. It was my considered opinion at the time that Clinton violated the War Powers Act in not consulting Congress. It was Labor Day and his re-election campaign was underway, and the idea of bombing Iraq seemed to catch our President's fancy. Now mind you, Iraq did not "fly" into the no-fly zone, but it did send army groups into the capital with tanks and guns. The reason was that the duly-elected government of the Kurdish province had asked Baghdad for military assistance, to put down a rebellion of its own people. The reason the people were rebellious was that they were starving, as the rest of the people of Iraq were also suffering, because of the U.S. embargo on Iraq's sale of oil for food, medicine and sanitary chemicals. The United Nations at that time reckoned that 1.6 million Iraqi civilians had died as a result of the sanctions, which the United States insisted upon keeping in place until there was a regime change. Our political establishment just does not like Saddam, you see. The rebellion in Kurdistan did have the effect of making life easier for the Kurds. Iraq was permitted to sell more oil and get more material from the outside world, although the funds would continue to be controlled by the UN. None of the cash goes to the Baghdad regime. None. It is doled out by UN paymasters. As of 1997, the decision was made to dole out more money for the Kurds. You ascribe the "golden era" they are enjoying to the relative freedoms they enjoy, and to a degree you are surely right, but money for vital imports goes a long way to make an economy work better. You should take this into account, John, when you begin expanding your coverage of Iraqi politics. The Times continues to run little stories about how Baghdad refuses to allow the weapons inspectors back into Iraq to look around for weapons of mass destruction. The stories never ever mention the reason why Saddam is being so stubborn, when even the Arab League seems unanimous in wanting him to let the inspectors back in. It is that the United States does not want the mechanism changed by which the UN will continue to dole out the funds it takes in from the sale of the state-owned oil. The national government, which technically owns on behalf of the Iraqi people the second largest proven oil reserves in the world, since 1991 has not seen a dime from its exports to the West, except for what it sneaks out to buyers in Turkey. This helps explain why Saddam retains a certain amount of "popularity" with the people of Iraq, as they do not blame their misfortunes on him, but on the United States and Israel. For if it were not for Israel's concern

These are major strikes everywhere from Panama to Iran. And it isn't even a complete list. It doesn't include places like Chile, as that was a CIA operation. I was only listing military attacks. Americans are either not told about these things or are told we attacked them because . . . well . . . Noriega is the center of all world drug traffic and we have to get rid of him. So we kill some Panamanians in the process. Actually we killed quite a few. And we brought in our Air Force. Panama didn't have an air force. But it looked good to have our Air Force there, busy, blowing up buildings. Then we kidnap their leader, Noriega, a former CIA man who worked loyally for the United States. We arrest him. Try him in an American court that has no jurisdiction over him and lock him up -- nobody knows why. [CTRL] [JIA Memo] Worst French Industrial 'Accident' Probably Terrorism
-Caveat Lector- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 17:59:35 -0700 To: [deleted by Tenorlove at sender's request] Subject: [JIA Memo] Worst French Industrial 'Accident' Probably Terrorism On September 21, 2001, only eleven days after the attacks on the United States, a huge explosion rocked the southern French city of Toulouse. The Azote de France (AZF) petrochemical plant and the surrounding area were heavily damaged with a loss of 29 lives and thousands of injuries, some fatal later. France¹s worst industrial accident since World War II destroyed AZF, never to reopen, and damaged 10,000 buildings including several dozen schools, a university and a hospital, and about 300 businesses employing 4,600 people. Facts, photos: http://www.uneptie.org/pc/apell/disasters/toulouse/home.html http://www.atofina.com/groupe/gb/comm/detail.cfm?ID=4402 But was it an accident, as French officials rushed to call it? The explosion centered on a warehouse that held 300 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, transformed into a 150-foot-wide crater by the explosion. It was only two tons of ammonium nitrate that brought down the Federal building in Oklahoma City. However, as Time magazine put it, ... [scientists] note that such nitrates require heating to at least 200°C and a sharp detonating charge before they'll explode. Given that stability, many were amazed when Toulouse public prosecutor Michel Bréard almost immediately assured the public it was 99% certain this was an accident. http://www.time.com/time/europe/eu/magazine/0,9868,178490,00.html Investigators soon had another hypothesis to work with: Hassan Jandoubi, 35, a French national born in Tunisia, was found dead at the scene. He was dressed in several layers of garments, which reports said were in the manner of kamikaze fundamentalists. Jandoubi had been hired to work at the plant only five days before the blast. An LCI television report said Jandoubi was connected to a group of four or five men in the area belonging to the Takfir movement, a Sunni sect of Egyptian origin that preaches aradical form of Islam. Two of those men are believed to have spent time in Afghanistan, according to the LCI report. http://www.chemsafety.gov/circ/post.cfm?incident_id=5247 French newspapers reported that police became interested in Jandoubi because truck drivers at the plant testified that the night before the blast Jandoubi shouted abuse at them for the small American flag they displayed to show sympathy for the United States victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. When police finally went to Jandoubi's apartment, after a procedural delay, they found it had been completely cleaned out. Jandoubi's family and friends deny any connection to radical Islam, but Toulouse police say he was known to meet people at a local mosque and have ties to Islamic fundamentalists. http://www.chemicalindustryarchives.org/whatsnew/press/nyt20011006.asp French government officials are sticking to their story that it was an accident, while investigators from many agencies have poured over the explosion site looking for a definitive explanation of the accident. Atofina, parent company of AZF, has issued a press release regarding the safety of the plant, which was exemplary. http://www.atofina.com/groupe/gb/doss/detail.cfm?ID=984# Does this pattern sound familiar? Quoting Daniel Pipes: On the 4th of July, an Egyptian immigrant to the United States who believes in wild conspiracy theories about Jews, is known for his great hate for Israel, and has possible ties to al Qaeda, armed himself to the teeth and assaulted the Israeli airline counter at Los Angeles International Airport, killing two. ... But one important institution - the U.S. government - claims not to know Hadayet's goals. An FBI spokesman has said that 'there's nothing to indicate terrorism.' http://www.danielpipes.org/article/431 The 4th of July shootings at LAX were certainly terrorism, by any reasonable definition, whether the FBI thinks so or not. And when we all saw four near-simultaneous airplane hijackings and the devestation they wrought on 9/11, we knew it was terrorism. We may never know for sure, but the AZF explosion probably was too. [CTRL] LAX Shooting - Mark Steyn: Whatever you do, don't call it a hate crime
-Caveat Lector- Whatever you do, don't call it a hate crime By Mark Steyn National Post July 8, 2002 I'm a dead white male, as you can tell from the above picture. Suppose on Martin Luther King Day I went to the offices of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and shot the receptionists. How many nano-seconds do you think it would take before the attack was being characterized as racially motivated? Your top Olympic hotshot could ingest every steroid on the planet and he couldn't beat that time. Suppose it was Judy Garland's birthday and I went to my local gay bathhouse and opened fire on the fetching young men handing out the towels. How many minutes would tick by before the word homophobia was heard? Or suppose it was the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and me and my semi-automatic swung by the abortion clinic... Well, you get the idea. On the Fourth of July (hint) a guy went to the airport in Los Angeles, sauntered up to the ticket counter of El Al (hint) and fatally shot two people and wounded three. How many folks hearing the news on a quickie radio update honestly expected it to be anyone other than a Muslim male of Middle Eastern origin? Obviously, Underperformin' Norman Mineta, the scrupulously sensitivity-trained U.S. Transportation Secretary, would have been wary of jumping to conclusions. Were he running the LAPD, he'd have pulled in a couple of elderly nuns and Kelli-Sue, a trainee hairdresser from Des Moines. But, fortunately for the final death toll, El Al has its own security and so the suspect, after firing 10 rounds, was himself killed. And whaddaya know? He wasn't an elderly nun but a 41-year-old Egyptian male! His name wasn't Kellie-Sue, it was Hesham Mohamed Hadayet! This stunning development seems to have completely disoriented the FBI. I quote from The New York Times headline: Officials Puzzled About Motive Of Airport Gunman. Hmm. Egyptian Muslim kills Jews on American national holiday. Best not to jump to conclusions. Denial really is a river in Egypt. It appears he went there with the intention of killing people, said Richard Garcia, the Bureau's agent in charge. Why he did that we are still trying to determine. CNN and The Associated Press all but stampeded to report a witness who described the shooter as a fat white guy in a ponytail who kept yelling Artie took my job. But, alas, this promising account proved to be a prank. Saudi Arabia's popular Arab News suggested that Mr. Hadayet had made the mistake of doing business with El Al and that the Israeli airline had been late in paying for two limousine rentals from the Egyptian immigrant's company. If a couple of late cheques were a motive for murder, Izzy's and Conrad's heads would now be stuffed and mounted in my trophy room. But, sadly, this cautionary tale about the Jew bloodsucker's commercial wiles proved also to be false. That left the police with no leads. Nothing to go on. The trail's stone cold. All the FBI has is an Egyptian male, who'd complained to his apartment managers after his neighbours post-9/11 began displaying the American flag; who'd posted a banner saying READ KORAN on his own front door; who told his employees that he hated Israel, that the two biggest drug dealers in New York were Israelis, and that Israel was trying to wipe out the Egyptian population by flooding the country with AIDS-infected Jewess prostitutes. Could even the most expert psychological profiler make sense of such confusing and contradictory signs? Beats me, Sherlock. But, as Agent Garcia says, there's no indication of anti-Israel views or any other type of racial views. Orange County's Muslim Public Affairs Council has praised Agent Garcia for his exceptionally advanced levels of sensitivity. Any moment now, they'll be demanding to know why Governor Gray Davis has failed to visit a mosque to reassure Muslims. Meanwhile, a London newspaper says that Mr. Hadayet may have met with Osama bin Laden's deputy on at least two occasions in Cairo. If last Thursday's shooting is the spectacular Fourth of July massacre al-Qaeda have been promising for months, then they're to be congratulated for a bloody slaughter on an epic scale never before seen in America except from incompetent grade-school psychos who steal Uncle Bud's hunting rifle but forget to take any extra ammo. In a story headlined Bin Laden Plans Fresh Terror For September, Britain's Observer reported yesterday that terrorists are planning a series of spectacular attacks on American, British and Israeli targets to coincide with the anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center on 11 September last year. As spectacular as Thursday? Well, let's not get too ambitious ... Oh, speaking of the late Mr. bin Laden, whatever happened to that new video we were promised any day now? Well, apparently, that's been pushed back to the new fall
Re: [CTRL] LAX Shooting: Was LA International Airport shooting, in fact, good news?
-Caveat Lector- Doesn¹t anyone remember bin laden et al calling for true believers everywhere to rise up on their own and cause terror and kill the Americans and their Zionist dogs? It doesn't have to be explicitly planned and ordered. The fatwa is out. What more orders does one need? The US does not want this called terrorism, because they are busy trying to redefine the word terrorist to define something you can war against. If Americans realize (remember) that the essence of terror is its unpredictability, its ease, then they might realize that shredding the Constitution won't do dick to stop terrorism. They might stop wearing the flag as a blindfold, and remember what it symbolizes instead. Not to mention that as long as Americans think of this as just a good ol' shootin' the gun lobby doesn't have to worry about suffering at the hands of anti-terrorist legislation and homeland security. on 7/9/02 8:08 PM, Tenorlove at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is why it would be good news if Hessan Hadayat turns out to be a member of an international terror group. [CTRL] Town Without Government Tests the Waters
-Caveat Lector- http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/188/metro/Town_takes_a_vacation+.shtml Town takes a vacation Irate Maine residents vote down a budget, bring services to halt By Marcella Bombardieri, Globe Staff, 7/7/2002 LEBANON, Maine - The outgoing message on the Town Hall's voice mail is spoken in an upbeat female voice: The Lebanon Town Office will be closed until at least August 14th. Please call back then for further information. Thank you. Since July 1, no one has been able to register a car in Lebanon, get a marriage license, or report a health code violation. The town clerk and other staff are collecting unemployment, while the rescue squad begs nearby towns to donate supplies such as latex gloves. In a heated referendum last month, citizens voted no on the town budget, shutting it down at least until another ballot in mid-August. The vote was the result of a standoff between selectmen and a grass-roots citizens group. But many residents of this Maine town near the New Hampshire border are unruffled, even pleased, with the idea of a summer without government. If people had their choice, most of the government would be shut down anyways, said Jim Martin, a 42-year-old mechanic. Your tax money is going there and it's not doing anything. Lebanon could be the test tube that limited-government crusaders have dreamed about for years. There are bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., who spend their whole careers arguing over whether America would do better or worse with fewer rules. The think tank set may never settle the issue, but Lebanon's 5,000 people just might. Whether it works in this place I don't know, but it is a great experiment, said Matthew Spalding, director of the Center for American Studies at the Heritage Foundation in Washington. Critics, however, say stripping away the services usually provided by government amounts to playing with people's lives. In addition to rejecting the town offices' budget, Lebanon also rejected the rescue squad budget and a plan for the town to buy its own ambulance, now that a hospital has canceled its ambulance service to Lebanon. Because the budget item didn't pass, the town had to hire a private contractor. Some blame that outcome for the sky diving death Thursday of a woman who crashed in Lebanon, since it took the private ambulance 20 minutes to get to the scene from its base in a neighboring town. She would've had a good chance if she had gotten to the hospital sooner, said assistant rescue chief Jason Cole. The victim, Texas resident Zara E. Sunday, 24, had trouble with her parachute and sustained severe head trauma and internal injuries. She died of cardiac arrest about three hours after arriving at the hospital. But Cole said voters may not have intended to vote against the ambulance. The measure failed by only 12 votes, in contrast to the 3-2 ratio against the town budget, and some residents said they misunderstood the question. The Lebanon experience - especially the sky diving death - suggests that people tend to dislike government until they need something from it. Many Lebanon residents are more comfortable knowing they won't get a visit from the animal control officer, but then, some wonder what would happen if a rabid dog paid them a visit. In the abstract, people are happy to do without government, until it infringes on their own freedoms and needs, said Robert O'Neill, president of the National Academy of Public Administration, a group chartered by Congress with the motto Making government work, and work for all. O'Neill, a former city manager in Virginia, said people often complained to him that they got nothing for their taxes. He would respond by asking if they flushed their toilet or sent their kids to school. There are things you cannot do for yourself and can only be done in a collective way, he said. Lebanon has a maverick political history. Without any big businesses in town, residents constitute almost the entire tax base. With that burden has come an especially robust skepticism about taxes and government. A decade ago, the community spent a summer without a government, and no one can remember any resulting disasters. That was around the same time Lebanon shut down its own police department to save money. To this day, it pays for extra protection from the county sheriff, and locals say their security is just fine. Now, thanks to the June referendum, there is no town clerk, no tax collector, no treasurer, no animal control officer. Town clerk Laura Bragg is volunteering two hours a week to process absentee ballots for the August vote. At first, citizens were told they would not be able to renew their car registrations during the shutdown, but the selectmen later made a deal with a nearby town to supply the service. The transfer station is open and road crews are working, because their budgets were passed in separate questions - although the bone-jarring road conditions are a prime example Lebanon residents use
