[CTRL] About Building A Compound - Or the Other Alternative to an RV Life
-Caveat Lector- www.mfhr.org/compound life.htm BUILDING A COMPOUND LIFE SITUATION ONE: It was 1996 when I first heard Dave in Arizona talk about his brothers building a family compound. His family members were middle-aged, his mother in her early 70s, he and his brothers and their wives were fed up with all the house problems and with unusual city violence they had endured leading to them all feeling unnecessarily ill, gaining a great deal of weight for unknown reasons, and a general malise -- the family was suffering, possibly even in danger of survival. They decided to take extreme measures to cure their scenes. The family sat down to a pow-wow and pooled their funds, and decided to build a compound for sthe duration, a place of refuge and safety and communal living near where they lived in central eastern California on a sizable, about eight acre parcel of land. They really did this and in 1998, two years later the family moved into their made-to-order communal living site, compound, as they officially called it. The compound had a tall 10' solid concrete wall around it...it had an electric gate...it had their mother, who at 70 some years, was grateful to have some protection but was scared to go to doctors for a clean-up. But her 50-something boys, four of them plus their wives, began to try to keep everything in order. The couples had each built homes inside and another for their mother. I imagined that they were keeping meaner dogs on the exterior areas...near the large electric fence, like Dobermans, pit bulls, etc. with dog houses to live in there. I was fascinated hearing about the compound from Dave for a few years and then seeing the results in his yearly Christmas card color xeroxs. These included scrapbook photos of his brothers showing the while family group drinking gallons of beer in bars year-after-year in local saloons with their wives. I saw a transformation of the family members with the photos beginning in about 1995, depicting the group as it was with dazed, perplexed looks, clouded minds, unhappy - confused even expressions, sullen palors. The brothers were shabby lookin' and very much over weight. Then came the compound. I asked Dave about how was it going, he replied it was super, just great. And sure enough the photos plainly showed the new story - the men had lost weight, gained bright, attractive, happy smiles, were wide awake, their wives more attractive, their mother doing better, despite lacking medical attention, said Dave. An amazing transition had taken place with his family, they were suddenly alive, not faltering as had been the case a few years before. It has been two years, I am not sure how things are going now...but things were great in 2002. Dave still lives in Arizona, he has not moved in with the group as of yet physically, but he still joins them on holidays in their beer drinking forays once or twice a year to the local barrios. This family's solutions to hardships in communities these days and times of transition throughout America hit me hard. I believe they have a good idea as long as their money holds out. I understand the compound is off limits to outsiders too and so the brothers have a consistent order to follow to maintain life there. This is not a cult event, these men all look obviously very much alike, they are not adoptees, they are the real brother thing, they are REAL human relatives. Their close relationships support that fact too. This is similar to the guarded mansions of recording artist-celebs in places reported in states like Arkansas and like the compounds of militia groups in Texas and Oklahoma, Montana, only this was a small family situation. SITUATION TWO: It was back in 1971, we were Hippies living on a progressive cool university campus. I was madly in love with Mark, a tall, high brow dog man who was a dreamboat. Mark was also an ace clay potter, he could spin the wheel with vessels as large as multi-gallon urns and he was only 20. We were both in art school. Mark had a dream and he told me with fervent zeal that when we all reached 60 we should pool our money and buy an big old house. There we should live together until we all died, hiring help as needed and enjoying life to the hilt with our own company, Mark felt this because of his grandmother...what he had seen regarding her care, how he loved her, what he felt we should to do to avoid being personally caged in a public facility. Unlearners everywhere must be overjoyed that the deceptive strategies employed by the Bush administration in promoting the war with Iraq are finally reaching a mass audience. Once again, Moore's genius at communicating powerful messages to the middle and working classes is on display. In spite of all of Mr. Moore's efforts though, little will be done to change the status quo except that people will believe things have changed. Nothing will be further from the truth. This website and others have forecasted a John Kerry victory in the upcoming November election as early as July of 2003. Remember at this time, if you will, that Senator Kerry was just a mere blip in the race for the nomination, which was largely being handed over to Howard Dean at the time. While the media raced to cover his campaign and then the Michael Moore-backed surge of Gen. Wesley Clark's candidacy, those awake enough in the world knew that Kerry's secret society connections, and more importantly his pedigree, all but secured his place as the next puppet president of the United States. This pattern is only a repeat of the 2000 election, where Bush had the higher peerage in his blood than his distant cousin Al Gore, and every election since the dawn of our republic. The difference between this election (if there is one), and the previous one is that the outcry against Bush will be so immense (partly due to Moore's film) that people will be fooled again into thinking that democracy works. While the burden of informing the masses as to the true nature of the power pyramid that controls the globe is not the sole responsibility of Mr. Moore, one cannot help but feel sadness that, as David Icke wrote on his website, an opportunity had been missed. What was that opportunity? It was the chance to devote as much time, possibly more, into expanding the real genius of the movie, which was the last 2 minutes of the film. In it, the Orwellian perpetual war economy is briefly outlined. Unfortunately, it is all too easy to assume from Moore's film that this is the brainchild of the Republican Party. Unlearners, and those in the throes of waking up, must remember that the Democratic Party is not the solution to what is ailing the country or the world. As the film dramatically demonstrated, not one US senator stood to oppose the unconstitutional power grab of George W. Bush in 2000. All but a few Democrats voted for the now unpopular Patriot Acts which are making it easy for governments to shred constitutional liberties. And almost every single one of them authorized the president to wage war on the world in the guise of eradicating terror networks. By failing to equally expose Democratic complicity in the sorry state of American politics, Michael Moore shows himself to be a student whose work is sorely incomplete. It may be another four years before Americans figure out they've been played yet again. What the world will look like by that time is anybody's guess (though the powerful certainly have a detailed plan). In the meantime, unlearners everywhere are encouraged to seek out and support those who are trying to expose the global game for what it is. Far more important, however, is for each of us to grow in strength and resolve to not be manipulated when the next big event is used as an attempt to pull your strings into surrendering more power. JOHN EDWARDS' compelling campaign theme of Two Americas should be returned to center stage. Worsening income disparities - greater than at any time since the 1920s - have produced two critical gaps that threaten American democracy. Upper-middle- and upper-class families that constitute the top 10 percent of the income distribution are prospering while many among the remaining 90 percent struggle to maintain their standard of living. Further, a widening chasm separates the 13,400 families, who on average earn just under $24 million a year, from everyone else. Two Americas has undone the historic balance between the nation's two most important values: liberty and equality, which pull in different directions. Liberty implies that people have full freedom to do as they choose with their resources. Equality of economic opportunity requires a fair start for all those in the race toward success. Today, the continuing imbalance between liberty and equality jeopardizes ordinary citizens' economic opportunities, and hence their middle-class status. Yet democracy in America demands a prospering middle class. The imbalance also raises the specter of an aristocracy of wealth, which was anathema to the nation's Founders. From 1970 to 2000 (adjusted for inflation), the bottom 90 percent's average income stagnated at $27,000 a year. The top 10 percent experienced an average yearly income increase of nearly 90 percent, from $119,000 in 1970 to $225,000 in 2000. The top one-hundredth percent had their average yearly incomes skyrocket by $20,327,482 between 1970 and 2000. Education provides a stark comparison between the wealthiest families and those struggling at the bottom. Horace Mann, an elite New York City private school, will have a tuition of $26,100 beginning in September. The price may seem high, but it offers the kind of rigorous educational setting that qualifies its graduates for Ivy League schools and similar top-of- the-line institutions. At Edward Williams Elementary, the poorest school in Mount Vernon, N.Y., 97 percent of the students were black, 90 percent received free lunches and nearly 10 percent lived in homeless shelters. When reports were assigned during Black History Month on famous black Americans, the library shelves yielded little help. Despite there being numerous books, New York Times columnist Michael Winerip pointed out, much of the collection is from the 1950s and 1960s and before, when this was a white school. The Williams Elementary students likely will work in dead-end jobs rather than graduate from any four-year college. The limited life chances of these poor black students is so at odds with the country's long-held vision of a fair start in life that it is best described as un- American. In Liberal Purposes: Goods, Virtues and Diversity in the Liberal State, the centrist social philosopher William Galston wrote: The life chances of individuals should not be determined by such factors as race, economic class, and family background. After all, there are others in establishment circles who differ sharply on the war policies of the Bush Administration. Gore, Kennedy, Byrd, and even Brezhinsky, the inveterate cold warrior of yesteryear, stand out in opposition. Several articles by George Soros, the multibillionaire, are strikingly lucid challenges to delusions of American supremacy and empire. Part of the answer undoubtedly involves judgment on election strategy (poor judgment, in the opinion of many). It's the notion that the campaign must accommodate to an electorate that has been moved center and right since the days of Ronald Reagan. That's the strategy that - with the help of dirty tricks and the Supreme Court - gave the White House to George W. Bush in 2000. It is amplified this time around by intimidation, the fear of appearing weak and out of step with Bush's holy war on terror. There's another part to the answer that's even more deeply rooted than political pragmatism. That is the commitment to US global dominance that is effectively required of anyone who has a real hope of becoming President in the current climate. Kerry's most influential backers surely share the widespread alarm over the extremism of the Bush Administration. They worry about the antagonism and isolation generated by the recklessly aggressive war and foreign policy, and likely also have misgivings about the GOP push toward a monopoly of power and autocratic one party rule. But for all their justified laments about Bush's unilateralism, their worldview is based on exploiting superpower advantage to gain universal acquiescence to US leadership and imperial supremacy. Furthermore, you only had to listen to Bob (the other) Kerry at the 9/11 hearings to recognize that not all hawks are Republicans. A realistic view of aspirations to US dominance in the sweep of capitalist globalization doesn't minimize the importance of the election outcome in November. There is an enormous divide between the consequences of a second term for Bush and a victory for Kerry. The plain fact is that this administration is the most warlike and anti-democratic in our history. It may, however, have engineered its own political downfall by overreaching with its pre-emptive war doctrine, its extravagant deceits, its fundamentalist Christian social agenda, its Patriot Act and blatant favors to its have more base. On the other hand, the conglomerate social forces that oppose movement toward a pseudo-fascist America are also capable of compelling a progressive shift on major social and economic issues and a saner approach to international problems. So every vote against Bush is an act of hope, and a clear- cut defeat for Bush would be a mandate for democratic renewal. True, defeating Bush would not by itself overcome the damage done to American society and to the world in the last couple of decades. It would, however, be more than a sharp turn off the road to disaster. It could be a new beginning in a long struggle for peace, justice, equality and survival. Beyond blocking the crusaders of the ultra-right, that struggle has to bring about a great change in priorities, worldwide and in the United States. The 9/11 terrorist attack on the United States and its exploitation to justify the blunderbuss extremism of the Bush Administration have changed the international and domestic agenda drastically. Banished from attention are problems that most affect the future of humanity and the needs of the majority of Americans. The travesty is that only when combating poverty and disease are at the top of the agenda can collective efforts succeed against adherents of terrorism

Yahoo, too, has been active. In general, the search engine space is starting to heat up again after several years of google-dominance. And if you're running a website, for yourself or for someone else, you've probably seen the Microsoft search bot in your server logs. At least, you have if you pay attention to your server logs and Microsoft can find your site yet. Now, don't get me wrong, competition is a good thing... but competition from Microsoft is not. We all know that competition from Microsoft involves things like cutting off their air supply and aggressively wielding their desktop muscle and huge cash reserves to get a foothold in the new market. Google's an established player, but it's facing a fair amount of competition and the current IPO can perhaps be taken as a hint that they are vulnerable -- that is, sufficiently in need of cash that it might affect their ability to respond to new players. So it looks like Microsoft is trying to extend its overbearing self into the search engine space, and the target at the top of the list is Google. Now, as a Linux user, I understand two things about this situation: first, Microsoft is not my friend; and second, Google has been a very good friend. So here's what I have to say: from now on, the Microsoft search bot will be specifically excluded from my web sites via the robots.txt file. The following entry should accomplish this: User-agent: msnbot/* Disallow: / What that means is that I won't allow Microsoft's search engine to index my websites. Google can, yahoo can... but Microsoft can't. It's the website owner's version of an invisible boycott. And if enough people do it, the Microsoft search engine will find itself unable to search large segments of the web. The column argues that the case may damage the music industry's strategy of suing individual file sharers as one member of the court offered a strong endorsement of respecting end user privacy in interpreting copyright law, noting that the court should eschew an interpretation that would encourage the monitoring or collection of personal data gleaned from Internet-related activity within the home. Column at http://shorl.com/bunovidralybo [Toronto Star] Decision at http://www.lexum.umontreal.ca/csc-scc/en/rec/html/2004scc045.wpd.html MG Balancing rights of creators, users MICHAEL GEIST LAW BYTES Last week's Supreme Court online music tariff decision - popularly known as the Tariff 22 case - culminated nine years of legal wrangling as the Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers of Music in Canada (SOCAN), a leading Canadian music collective, failed in its attempt to pin a new royalty for downloaded music on Canada's Internet service providers. The result marks another defeat for the music industry that lost not only this case, but also received signals from Canada's highest court that its file sharing litigation may be in for further trouble. The Tariff 22 case dates back to 1995 when SOCAN first applied for a new tariff for downloading online music. After four years of hearings, the Copyright Board of Canada issued a decision in 1999 that largely absolved Internet Service providers from collecting such a tariff. The case was appealed to the Federal Court of Canada, which ruled in 2002 that ISPs might be required to pay some royalties due to the common practice of caching content on their servers to speed up its delivery. The court reasoned potential liability was appropriate since caching was not strictly necessary to deliver content and thus it fell outside of the intermediary exemption found in the Copyright Act. The Supreme Court last week overturned the Federal Court decision, thus protecting the ability to deploy innovative technologies such as caching that improve the efficiency of the Internet. Canadian ISPs breathed a sigh of relief as the court concluded that when massive amounts of non-copyrighted material are accessible to the end user, it is not possible to impute to the Internet service provider, based solely on the provision of Internet facilities, an authority to download copyrighted material as opposed to non-copyrighted material. Moreover, the court again emphasized the importance of a copyright balance between creators and users, noting that the protection of intermediaries such as ISPs is not a loophole in the Copyright Act, but rather a critical part of the balance. Although some in the music industry professed to be pleased by the outcome, the decision marked a strong rejection of SOCAN's ISP liability legal theory leaving the copyright collective with a proposed tariff that few deep-pocketed ISPs will be required to pay. In fact, the decision may be even more damaging to the industry than it appears at first blush. While the case does not directly address peer-to-peer file sharing, many copyright experts openly speculated about whether the Supreme Court might use the Tariff 22 case to provide some insight into its views on peer-to-peer file sharing in light of last March's federal court decision denying the Canadian Recording Industry Association's request for information on the

It is nice that a small taste of the evidence compiled by the 9/11 skeptics movement has finally reached a mass audience. But Moore's blockbuster documentary is a weird mix of extremely good and extremely bad, falsely blames Saudi Arabia as the perpetrator of 9/11, and missed blatantly obvious opportunities to provide the audience with tools to understand why the Bush regime allowed 9/11 and invaded Iraq. The blame the Saudis campaign is really a sophisticated effort to lay the ground work for the forthcoming US invasion of Saudi Arabia. The Saudis were merely a subcontractor in 9/11 (at most), since they do not control the Air Force and NORAD's fighter planes that are supposed to intercept off-course jet liners within minutes. While it is unknown whether Moore realizes that he is playing into the Project for a New American Century strategists (who seem eager to declare Saudi Arabia an enemy of the US and put it toward the top of the Countries We Must Invade list), his film Fahrenheit 9/11 will certainly be seen as the dissident view of 9/11. The film did not actually probe into the complicity of the Bush administration in the event, it is merely a Limited Hang Out that blames Bush for intelligence failures while pointing out (accurately) that the Bush and Bin Laden families have business ties that date to the 1970s. Bush at Booker Elementary: proof the usurper is not really the President The footage of Bush reading My Pet Goat to second graders while people burned in the towers is new to most people because of self-censorship by the media that has avoided the issue for nearly three years. This scene is particularly damning because his aide did not ask the President for a response when he told him that the second tower had been hit. A commander-in-chief would have replied with inquires about the scrambling of fighter planes to intercept the remaining off-course jets, but Bush continued with the bland photo-op rather than make decisions that could have saved lives. The Secret Service also let Bush stay in the school for crucial minutes, which was either unprecedented incompetence or proof that they knew that Bush was not in danger from any of the hijacked planes. Moore's commentary suggested that Bush, while looking dumb and detached in the schoolroom, might have been wondering if his friends the Saudis had done this. It is much more likely that Bush was thinking that he had been told this event was coming, and now it was here. The bittersweet aspect of Moore's inclusion of this key issue is the likelihood that if the mainstream media - or even the so-called alternative press - had discussed the strange behavior of George W. Bush when told of the attacks, it could have empowered many more citizens to break free of the post-9/11 trance, potentially strengthening efforts to prevent the invasion of Iraq when it would have saved many more lives. How many Iraqi deaths are partially responsible to the fear in the US media to expose the lies behind the official story of 9/11? Evidence Ignored in F/911 The most basic dichotomy for understanding 9/11 is whether it was a surprise attack or allowed to happen. Fahrenheit 9/11 carefully steers clear of documenting the overwhelming evidence that at the very least, 9/11 was deliberately allowed to happen to enable long-planned efforts to seize the Middle East oil fields and impose the Homeland Security police state. Moore says that This movie is perhaps the most thoroughly researched and vetted documentary of our time. These are the two Kuwaiti roadways, littered with remains of 2,000 mangled Iraqi military vehicles, and the charred and dismembered bodies of tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers, who were withdrawing from Kuwait on February 26th and 27th 1991 in compliance with UN resolutions. U.S. planes trapped the long convoys by disabling vehicles in the front, and at the rear, and then pounded the resulting traffic jams for hours. "It was like shooting fish in a barrel," said one U.S. pilot. The horror is still there to see. On the inland highway to Basra is mile after mile of burned, smashed, shattered vehicles of every description - tanks, armored cars, trucks, autos, fire trucks, according to the March 18, 1991, Time magazine. On the sixty miles of coastal highway, Iraqi military units sit in gruesome repose, scorched skeletons of vehicles and men alike, black and awful under the sun, says the Los Angeles Times of March 11, 1991. While 450 people survived the inland road bombing to surrender, this was not the case with the 60 miles of the coastal road. There for 60 miles every vehicle was strafed or bombed, every windshield is shattered, every tank is burned, every truck is riddled with shell fragments. No survivors are known or likely. The cabs of trucks were bombed so much that they were pushed into the ground, and it's impossible to see if they contain drivers or not. Windshields were melted away, and huge tanks were reduced to shrapnel. "Even in Vietnam I didn't see anything like this. It's pathetic," said Major Bob Nugent, an Army intelligence officer. This one-sided carnage, this racist mass murder of Arab people, occurred while White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater promised that the U.S. and its coalition partners would not attack Iraqi forces leaving Kuwait. This is surely one of the most heinous war crimes in contemporary history. The Iraqi troops were not being driven out of Kuwait by U.S. troops as the Bush administration maintains. They were not retreating in order to regroup and fight again. In fact, they were withdrawing, they were going home, responding to orders issued by Baghdad, announcing that it was complying with Resolution 660 and leaving Kuwait. At 5:35 p.m. (Eastern standard Time) Baghdad radio announced that Iraq's Foreign Minister had accepted the Soviet cease-fire proposal and had issued the order for all Iraqi troops to withdraw to positions held before August 2, 1990 in compliance with UN Resolution 660. President Bush responded immediately from the White House saying (through spokesman Marlin Fitzwater) that "there was no evidence to suggest the Iraqi army is withdrawing. In fact, Iraqi units are continuing to fight. . . We continue to prosecute the war." On the next day, February 26, 1991, Saddam Hussein announced on Baghdad radio that Iraqi troops had, indeed, begun to withdraw from Kuwait and that the withdrawal would be complete that day. Again, Bush reacted, calling Hussein's announcement "an outrage" and "a cruel hoax." Eyewitness Kuwaitis attest that the withdrawal began the afternoon of February 26, 1991 and Baghdad radio announced at 2:00 AM (local time) that morning that the government had ordered all troops to withdraw. The massacre of withdrawing Iraqi soldiers violates the Geneva Conventions of 1949, Common Article III, which outlaws the killing of soldiers who are out of combat. The point of contention involves the Bush administration's claim that the Iraqi troops were retreating to regroup and fight again. Such a claim is the only way that the massacre which occurred could be considered legal under international law. But in fact the claim is false and obviously so. The troops were withdrawing and removing themselves from combat under direct orders from Baghdad that the war was over and that Iraq had quit and would fully comply with UN resolutions. Bushs actions have politically polarized the American electorate and Moores Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary has made a bad situation for Bush far worse. We can see why the Mickey Mouse boys were terrified to touch this. They are very vulnerable and an infuriated Bush gang would take out their revenge on them for such a film. The danger lies in what probable actions Bush might take to swing the election that now is moving strongly against him. He is appealing to far right Christian groups, something that is sure to outrage more centrists and moderate religious groups. When these groups get the bit in their teeth, they become very vocal and often very vicious. More important, however, is the distinct possibility that Bush will start another military adventure, just before the election. Rumor at high levels has it that he will declare a state of emergency, based on faked reports, that North Korea and/or Iran are about to launch nuclear strikes against the American homeland and that he has ordered counterstrikes to defend this country. There are a significant number of Americans who would go for this. Hell, there are many Americans that believe Hussein controlled Al Quaeda, that the WTC was blown up by CIA missiles or plasmoid clouds or that Bush has helped the American economy instead of absolutely destroying its future growth. Unfortunately, both of these countries do have the Bomb and both are capable of retaliation or, worse, preemptive strikes against our troops in South Korea, Iraq or even Japan. Between Israel beating the drums for a US attack on Iran and Syria and Bushs toppling pole numbers, most of us are now seriously afraid of some Godawful adventure on the part of the Mission Accomplished lad. He stated in this, and subsequent, emails that he was in possession of thousands of pages of in-house memos sent from his corporate headquarters in New York City to the head of the networks television news department. He went on to say that these memos set forth directives about what material was, and was not, to be aired on the various outlets of the network. This individual claimed he was developing serious doubts about the strict control of media events and decided that he would pass this material along to someone who might make use of it. There was the question of his job security. If someone published his name, it would be certain he was not only fired but blackballed throughout his profession. If tbrnews.org would agree to protect his identity, he would send us these alleged thousands of pages of notes, going back to 2001. The proof of the pudding is in the eating so we accepted his caveats and he then sent to us by disk the pages he spoke of. All are on corporate stationary, signed or initialed by the senders and again, signed or initialed by the recipients in the news division. It was always possible that this material consisted of a very involved hoax or was something designed for the news site to use and then have it revealed that it was not original. It would not be the first time that spurious disinformation had been sent to us in the hopes that it would be used. There were not thousands of pages of memos but a total of 1,497 separate pages involved. Many of them consisted of short memos while others ran to a larger format. Naturally, someone could easily have obtained correct in-house network letterheads, made copies of them and prepared false memoranda but the sheer size and depth of the collection was impressive. If these memos were true, they showed with a terrible clarity that at least one part of the American mass media was strictly controlled and that the news was so doctored and spun that it might as well be official news releases from the White House and Pentagon. The best way in which to ascertain whether or not these documents contained original information was to check the dates of issuance and compare the information with subsequent news stories. This was a terrible, time-consuming chore but by selecting random memos and looking through the archives of various national newspapers, checking AP releases and so on, the results indicated that indeed, news was being managed. However, it was also possible that someone else did this and was preparing these after the fact and making the memos conform to published material. If we are correct in our assessment that torture is being used as an instrument of governance in Canada, then the urgent action categorization of this complaint is warranted. The more such procedures are entrenched by time, the more our citizens are endangered. We do not think that the Supreme Court of Canada judgements on either side in the Gosselin case meant for Life, Liberty and Security (Charter S.7) to be systematically violated in government programming so extreme as to fit the definition of torturous. Drugs, hypnosis, electronics, and psychology (including parapsychology and the occult) were their basic research areas. Like any good scientists they thoroughly reviewed the historical documentation which related to their areas of interest. They farmed out experimental projects to a list of prestigious universities and to government agencies such as the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health (these also funded their university contract work with grants). The chief officers, MKULTRA Director Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, and his superior, Richard Helms, when their pernicious activities came to light, burned all the records (fortunately overlooking boxes of financial records that had been stored separately). They did what they could -- which was considerable -- to keep the general public and responsible government authorities from knowing what they were up to, as well as the precise reasons for it. Some things are generally understood, however. Gottlieb, Helms, and other knowledgeable officials were required to testify before Congress, many of them have been interviewed by writers, and some of the science which their researchers originated has been replicated outside of their curtain of secrecy. So there is information from fairly reliable sources. The waters, however, have been muddied by purposeful disinformation as well as by conspiracy theory fanaticism and paranoia. It is not always possible to know where to draw the line. Although government mind-control projects were in operation as early as the 1940's (during which along with other things the Russian, drug-brainwash "show trials" were studied), MKULTRA, which both grew out of them and absorbed some of them, began operating about the time that the North Koreans were brainwashing POWs with a little help from their Chinese friends (1950s). And the Chinese techniques motivated them to do a little reverse engineering, that is, the Americans copied the Chinese methods. But they did not limit themselves to just that. The Penetration of Off-Beat religions Author Miles Copland states that when the CIAs Special Projects Division makes "connections with international religious groups for the purposes of aiding or supplementing espionage operations (it) is almost as touchy an issue as its association with criminal rings. To start with, Jewish and Catholic organizations are out. . . . Organizations stemming from other religions are fair game, however." And he quotes one CIA official as saying that before they "tie into a religious group its got to be so offbeat that anyone in the agency who belongs to it may be fired as a security risk." -Caveat Lector- http://news.statesmanjournal.com/article.cfm?i=83100 House vote about Israel ignores attempts for peace July 7, 2004 Again the United States has shown that it is not really interested in addressing the causes of terrorism, nor the rule of law, by the overwhelming vote in the U.S. House recently to endorse the most egregious of Israels positions regarding settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. Our elected representatives have agreed that taking over another countrys lands is good policy, similar to our behavior in Iraq. This time it is the United States agreeing with Israel that separating people from their land, their livelihoods, even their life is acceptable if they are militarily superior and state that they are afraid. The U.N. Security Council stated that Israel should withdraw from those lands in return for certain guarantees from Palestinian groups that they would not attack Israeli citizens. Palestinians and Israelis worked together to create the Geneva Initiative that both could support and that addressed peace between them. Our representatives, including Darlene Hooley, voted to ignore these attempts at peace, even our own road map for peace. May we not reap the results of our beating plowshares into swords. Parade Magazine took full advantage of Independence (sic) Day falling on a Sunday by hiring none other than Elie Wiesel to pen a little something called The America I Love for their patriotic cover story. Over a two-page spread, the Nobel Laureate explained how America for two centuries, has stood as a living symbol of all that is charitable and decent to victims of injustice everywhere...where those who have are taught to give back. The perpetually disheveled Wiesel explained that in the U.S., compassion for the refugee and respect for the other still have biblical connotations. Those same thoughts coming from a housewife in Peoria or truck driver in Boise are typically chalked up to ignorance so, perhaps Elie Wiesel is just an idiot...too simple-minded to discern reality from fantasy. But we cant let him off the hook so easily when, after reminding usyet againof his Holocaust experiences, the winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom admits, U.S. history has gone through severe trials (apparently this is how Nobel Peace Prize winners think: its history that undergoes trials). Ever careful to point out his bearing witness to the civil rights movement (and equally careful to avoid explaining what that means), Wiesel calls anti-black racism scandalous and depressing. But, take heart, black America, because dear Elie adds racism as such has vanished from, the American scene. Roll over, Mumia...and tell Leonard Peltier the news. Wiesel deigns to mention a few more of Americas indiscretions but is at the ready to explain: No nation is composed of saints alone. None is sheltered from mistakes and misdeeds (more scholarly talk: mistakes, not policy"). America is always ready to learn from its mishaps, he writes. Self-criticism remains its second nature. This is the territory of madmen and commissars. Who else speaks such words...and is convinced they speak the truth? Precisely what kind of man is this professional sufferer, Elie Wiesel? Here are two peeks behind the myth: While Wiesels documentation of the Nazi Holocaust has earned him international acclamation and a Nobel Peace Prize, he is not always predisposed to yield the genocide victims spotlight. In 1982, for example, a conference on genocide was held in Israel with Wiesel scheduled to be honorary chairman, but the situation became complicated when the Armenians wanted in. Heres how Noam Chomsky described the incident: The Israeli government put pressure upon [Wiesel] to drop the Armenian genocide. They allowed the others, but not the Armenian one. He was pressured by the government to withdraw, and being a loyal commissar as he is, he withdrew...because the Israeli government had said they didnt want Armenian genocide brought up. Wiesel went even further, calling up noted Israeli Holocaust historian, Yehuda Bauer, and pleading with him to also boycott the conference. That gives an indication of the extent to which people like Elie Wiesel were carrying out their usual function of serving Israeli state interests, Chomsky explains, even to the extent of denying a holocaust, which he regularly does. Why not welcome the Armenians, you wonder? Chalk it up to two conspicuous factors: the need to monopolize the Holocaust image and the geopolitical reality that Turkey (the nation responsible for the Armenian genocide) is a rare and much-needed Muslim ally for Israel. In Parade, Wiesel also speaks of brave American soldiers bringing rays of hope to the people of Iraq. However, such rays were not welcome in Central and South America when Israel served as a U.S. proxy for proving arms to murderous regimes like that of Guatemala. In 1981, shortly after Israel agreed to provide military aid to this oppressive regime, a Guatemalan officer had a feature article published in the armys Staff College review. In that article, the officer praised Adolf Hitler, National Socialism, and the Final Solution --quoting extensively from Mein Kampf and chalking up Hitlers anti-Semitism to the discovery that communism was part of a Jewish conspiracy. Despite such seemingly incompatible ideology, Israels estimated military assistance to Guatemala in 1982 was $90 million. What type of policies did the Guatemalan government pursue with the help they received from a nation populated with thousands of Holocaust survivors? Consider the words of Gabriel, one of the Guatemalan freedom fighters interviewed in 1994 by Jennifer Harbury: In my country, child malnutrition is close to 85 percent. Ten percent of all children will be dead before the age of five, and this is only the number actually reported to government agencies. Close to 70 percent of our people are functionally illiterate. There is almost no industry in our countryyou need land to survive. Less than 3 percent of our landowners own over 65 percent

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said he was satisfied with claims by Attorney General John Ashcroft and a senior FBI official that the civil lawsuit by Sibel Edmonds could expose intelligence-gathering methods and disrupt diplomatic relations with foreign governments. The judge said he couldn't explain further because his explanation itself would expose sensitive secrets. Edmonds, a former contract linguist for the FBI, said she will appeal the ruling. She alleged in her lawsuit that she was fired in March 2002 after she complained to FBI managers about shoddy wiretap translations and told them an interpreter with a relative at a foreign embassy might have compromised national security. Edmonds said the judge dismissed her lawsuit without hearing evidence from her lawyers, although the government's lawyers met with Walton at least twice privately. She noted that Walton, the judge, was appointed by President Bush. This shows how the separation of power has basically disappeared, Edmonds said in a telephone interview. The judge ruled on this case without actually this ever being a case. In his decision, Walton acknowledged that dismissing a lawsuit before the facts of the case can be heard is Draconian and said he was throwing out the lawsuit with great consternation. Mindful of the need for virtual unfettered access to the judicial process in a governmental system integrally linked to the rule of law, the court nonetheless concludes that the government has properly invoked the state secrets privilege, Walton ruled. Edmonds' lawyer, Mark S. Zaid, called the decision another example of the executive branch's abuse of secrecy to prevent accountability. The judiciary seems to be unwilling to do anything but capitulate to assertions of national security, Zaid said. The Justice Department's inspector general is investigating whether the FBI retaliated against Edmonds, who was subjected to a security review after she raised allegations of security lapses. The bureau said problems with Edmonds' performance were behind the dismissal. The FBI translator program has played a significant role in interpreting interviews and intercepts of Osama bin Laden's network since Sept. 11. This comes blithely on the heels of Bush hiring his own trial lawyer to protect him during the 70-minute Oval Office interrogation he endured regarding the Valerie Plame CIA-outing case some weeks ago. Everyone hates lawyers until they need one, it seems. Perhaps Bush doesn't like trial lawyers because a team of them failed to keep his long-time friend and financial backer, Kenneth Lay, from getting his hide nailed to the shed in Houston. According to CNN, Lay was indicted by a Texas grand jury today for crimes relating to the apocalyptic Enron scandal. The indictment is sealed until further notice, so no determination of the exact criminal charges can be made. Damn lawyers. For those who cannot quite recall the specifics of Ken Lay and Enron, a bit of background is in order. Lay, along with Andrew Fastow, Jeffrey Skilling and some dozens of other high-flying bosses from Enron, are accused of insider trading, securities fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, manipulation of earnings reports to hide the fact that Enron was hemorrhaging cash from every pore while they reaped massive salaries and bonuses, and finally, manipulation of the California energy market for no other reason than to wring pin money out of grandmothers who were forced to live in the dark because they couldn't afford to pay their Enron-inflated energy bills. Tape recordings of Enron energy traders were recently aired by CBS News. In one segment, the traders can be heard discussing the ins and outs of manipulating the California energy market. "They're fucking taking all the money back from you guys?" complains one Enron employee. "All the money you guys stole from those poor grandmothers in California?" The response: "Yeah, grandma Millie, man." Another response: "Yeah, now she wants her fucking money back for all the power you've charged right up, jammed right up her asshole for fucking $250 a megawatt hour." Charming. In filing the largest bankruptcy claim in the history of the universe, Lay and his merry men cost investors somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 billion. This wiped out retirement benefits not just for the Enron employees who were forbidden from selling their stock (while Lay et al. happily shucked theirs off to the tune of a $1.1 billion profit), but also wiped out the retirement portfolios of millions of Americans who had put their savings into Enron stock. The resulting carnage on Wall Street, which erased the accounting giant Arthur Andersen, did even more financial damage. Martha Stewart was convicted of crimes that seem quaint by comparison, and meanwhile Mr. Lay has been walking free and happy. How did the priorities of the Justice Department get so far out of whack on this one? The Enron debacle happened in December of 2001, and it has taken them almost a thousand days to
