T. Casey Brennan
Comic Book Conspiracy 

Ann Arbor was host to a gathering at a house I had never visited before. On
the back porch, with my red plastic cup freshly filled from the keg, I
sipped and exhaled winter breath. That night I encountered T. Casey Brennan,
the man who, legend has it, shot JFK.

Brennan started writing comics in the late-'60s with Warren Publishing’s
horror series Eerie. As the '70s stormed ahead, Brennan penned tales for
Warren horror magazines Creepy and Vampirella and DC Comics’ House of
Mystery among countless others. 

“I began reading them in kindergarten in September of 1953,” Brennan says.
“I was five-years-old, it was a one-room school on a gravel road, no inside
toilet or running water and the teacher had to shovel coal. There was a kid
that had a massive collection of old time comic books and I began reading
them and I became very enamored by the whole concept.”

With his stories, Brennan loved to create his own world and he used language
like a machine gun, peppering his prose with vivid Vampirella speech bubbles
that took readers on a creepy joy ride. By 1990, Brennan’s activism to
remove cigarette smoking from comics caused then Arkansas Governor, Bill
Clinton, to designate January as “T. Casey Brennan Month.” 

Now, 59-year-old Brennan is homeless, nearly nomadic, splitting time in
cities such as Ann Arbor, Pittsfield and Ypsilanti. He enjoys going to
parties and in my email correspondences with him, he often asks if I know of
any bashes. He considers himself a street-punk and feels that America has
reached a cultural revolution that is genuine, unlike the hippies.

President Kennedy collected enemies like some people
postage stamps. It is on this, plus the odd
antecedents of assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and the
imperfect official investigation, that the green-ink
brigade have built ever-more elaborate theories to
explain his death. Here are highlights from 40 years
of paranoid thinking on who really killed JFK:

Fidel Castro The target of numerous US-funded attempts
on his life, Castro finally ordered a murder bid of
his own, and got lucky. Alternatively, Cuban exiles
felt let down over the Bay of Pigs fiasco and wanted
revenge. Oswald's rococo background conveniently
provides links with both pro- and anti-Castro
elements.

Russians Known as the Reader's Digest theory, this
all-purpose right- wingers' explanation says that
Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev ordered the killing in
revenge for the humiliation he suffered over the Cuban
missile crisis. After all, hadn't Oswald defected to
the Soviets once, and wasn't his wife the niece of a
KGB colonel?

Vietnamese On 2 November 1963, Saigon president Ngo
Dinh Diem was shot in a US-funded coup. So his widow,
the dreaded Madam Nhu, extracted her fiendish
retaliation.

LBJ The wily old Texan fixer got fed up with waiting
for the top job to fall vacant. So, using his
connections in his home state, he had the younger man
bumped off. And notice how LBJ stayed in Washington
that day...

J Edgar Hoover Disgusted that such a relentless
womaniser could hold his country's highest office, and
aware that JFK was going to insist Hoover retired in
1965, the FBI-director told his boys to do the deed.
Or, they knew Oswald, an old FBI informant, was
planning to kill the President and turned a blind eye.

CIA Well if the FBI didn't get him, then some other
outfit with three initials must have done it. And the
CIA, fearing that Kennedy was hell- bent on killing
off the agency in the wake of the Bay of Pigs fiasco,
got their retaliation in first.

Mafia It funded Kennedy and rigged the vote in
Illinois, but was their man grateful? No, instead,
he and his brother Bobby were planning a crackdown on
organised crime. And Kennedy was fooling around with
Mafia women.

Federal Reserve Bank In June 1963, President John F
Kennedy signed Executive Order 11,110 which, on the
surface, gave power to the Treasury at the expense of
the Federal Reserve. Deeply offended, the number
crunchers sent for a hit-man.

Aliens The secret forces that control the US couldn't
tame Kennedy. He was on the verge of revealing the
existence of aliens, so he had to die didn't he?
Otherwise, they couldn't carry out their plan, could
They?

Some other bloke It was all down to a Manchurian
Candidate who was brainwashed into becoming a deadly
automaton by powerful forces inside the US
government who resented their liberal and glamorous
leader. Self- confessed zombies include one James
Files, and a T Casey Brennan.

Richard Nixon You can laugh, you can scoff, but why
was Tricky Dicky in Dallas that November day?

Q.:1)What kinds of stories did you read growing up?

A.:As far as comics, I've already noted, in earlier
interviews, the kind of influence Harvey's MAN IN
BLACK and BLACK CAT MYSTIC had on me.  I might have to
add JET POWERS and PHANTOM LADY to a list of my
all-time favorites. 

Q.:2)Did you intend to write comics or did you fall
into it?

A.:  I definitely intended it.  They'd played to great
a part in my adolescence and childhood for me to
ignore them in my writing career.

Q.:3)How did you end up doing work for Warren?

A.:  I sent him scripts, just as Archie Goodwin was
leaving his writing detail.

Q.:4)How was your relationship with Jim Warren? Some
people absolutely loved him, with others it was a lot
more combative.

A.:  All of that is just ancient history now.  Jim
Warren is remembered more now for his contributions to
the world of comic books, than for his personality
conflicts with his staff.

Q.:5)Did you only write stuff when asked or did you
write stories on your own and send them in to Warren?

A.:  I made them up on my own.  The only two
exceptions were Carrier of the Serpent from EERIE
#38, which I wrote to order from a Ken Kelly painting,
and my work in VAMPIRELLA #17-21, wherein I had to
work with Archie Goodwin's characters.

Q.:6)Did you have some particular favorite artists who
drew your stories?

A.:  In retrospect, Jerry Grandenetti, who drew some
of my stories for both Warren and DC's HOUSE OF
MYSTERY.

Q.:7)Did you follow comics at all outside of the work
you were doing?

A.: I read the silver-age comics quite avidly, during
my own boyhood...as well as reprints and collector's
copies of the golden age comics that predated my own
birth.

Q.:8)You wrote some stories for DC's House of Mystery,
as well. How(if at all) different were the experiences
for you writing for Warren and DC?

A.:  In HOUSE OF MYSTERY #274, my story, The Soul of
Faustus, had to be rewritten because I crucified
Faustus at the end!

Q.:9)What Warren work of yours are you most proud of?

A.:  Carrier of the Serpent in EERIE #38 would be
right up there; so would On the Wings of a Bird from
CREEPY #36 -- both were drawn by Jerry Grandenetti.

additional work. Just eyeballing it, though, the

A more significant recent triumph for T. Casey is the
inclusion of his 'Hypothetical Cerebus' in the new
ACTOR Comics volume. The cover of this 152-page
collection, adorned with the Incredible Hulk and
Spiderman, is easy to spot on the rack at Vault of
Midnight on Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor. Been a
while since you peeked inside a comic book? If you're
looking for an excuse, then the fact that you'd be
supporting a downtown business and a local writer
(among other comic book veterans) could serve as one.

Headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, MKULTRA was started on
the order of CIA director Allen Dulles on April 13,
1953, largely in response to alleged Soviet, Chinese,
and North Korean use of mind-control techniques on
U.S. prisoners of war in Korea. The CIA wanted to use
similar methods on their own captives. The CIA was
also interested in being able to manipulate foreign
leaders with such techniques, and would later invent
several schemes to drug Fidel Castro...

Because most of the MKULTRA records were deliberately
destroyed in 1972 by order of the Director at that
time, Richard Helms, it is impossible to have a
complete understanding of the more than 150
individually funded research projects sponsored by
MKULTRA and related CIA programs.

1. In Conjurella Messiah: Necronomicon Monks, you
describe George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the
American Nazi Party, as a friend. What was your
relationship with him like?

TCB: This is the passage from that story, describing
Rockwell:

MK-ULTRA had sought a protective cover of rightists
and paramilitarists, standing ready with their own
troops, to aid in the supposed 'invasion of Cuba'.
Those who did believe had included American Nazi Party
leader, George Lincoln Rockwell, the scholarly but
sinister Dr. Fred G. Schwartz of the Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade (which shared offices with the
Fair Play for Cuba Committee in New Orleans), and
martial arts expert Bruce Lee, hell-bent on liberating
his people from the murderous brand of communism which
had overtaken China.

But Walker had refused altogether, and Lee, under
orders from David Ferrie, his commanding officer in
the Civil Air Patrol, had fired on Walker and missed,
deliberately, as a warning. Lee believed, but Walker
did not. George Lincoln Rockwell, chess player,
essayist, Nazi leader, friend: he believed also. ('Get
Lincoln out of that Nazi suit, and talk to him
man-to-man, and he's all right,' someone had told me
then.)

'Call George and tell him the invasion is off,' David
Ferrie said, light-heartedly, after the
assassination.

That passage is, I think, self-explanatory. David
Ferrie, and others in the CIA, had been mobilizing
various right-wing groups and leaders for a proposed
invasion of Cuba. Rockwell was among these. If you are
asking if I was sympathetic to George Lincoln
Rockwell, the answer is, of course I was. It would be
difficult, in the context of my experiences, to see
him as an actual Nazi. Actual Nazis killed millions;
George Lincoln Rockwell never killed anyone... he only
passed out silly pamphlets, which was, essentially,
the same thing Lee Oswald did (or, for that matter,
James Earl Ray). He was neither a monster or a hero;
he was just a man caught up in the web of the CIA.
When the proposed plan to assassinate Castro was
replaced with the project to assassinate John Kennedy,
one by one, those who knew too much, were murdered or
disgraced. How can I not be sympathetic to those men,
however I may have felt about their views? But someone
should find a list of his pallbearers.

2. In Conjurella Messiah: Necronomicon Monks, you
describe Bruce Lee's role in the JFK assassination.
How well did you and your family know Bruce Lee?

TCB: I have no memories of him, other than this scene
from Conjurella Messiah: Necronomicon Monks. Someone
should try to contact his remaining family members and
try to verify any of this. But as his own death was
suspicious, and his son Brandon Lee was shot to death,
they may be reluctant to tell...

...That fleeting memory; no before, no after, just
the memory. We are in a hotel room, somewhere. It is
before the JFK assassination, sometime.

Lee is there, like Bruce. They have both seen the
children, Dr. E's children, sitting limply in chairs
with needles in their necks, headsets on their ears,
screens before their vacant faces. Dr. E says: it is
necessary: child assassins formed with the
super-science of the future, child assassins, a proud
tradition of both sides of the now concluded great
war, child assassins necessary for the invasion of
Cuba. It has already grated on Lee; later, he will
seek a friend and confidant in Dallas police officer,
J.D. Tippitt, whom he will tell.

But for Bruce, it is intolerable NOW.

'Get rid of the kids,' Bruce says, 'We don't need
them.'

Lee sits, staring downward, his hand on his forehead,
wearing that sly, secret smile, only ever-so-slightly
visible.

'I can't,' Lee says softly, and matter-of-factly.

Bruce side-steps into position and gestures toward me.

'Get rid of the kid,' Bruce says, 'Get him out of
here. Take him home. Lose him. Anything.'

Terrance Casey Brennan is the author of numerous comic
book stories, published in the 1970s Warren
anthologies Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella.

In the 1980s, Brennan campaigned to have depictions of
smoking in comics banned, which led then-Gov. Bill
Clinton of Arkansas to issue a proclamation
designating January 1990 as T. Casey Brennan Month.

In his prose work since the early 1990s, Brennan also
claims to have shot John F. Kennedy during his stint
as a victim of the CIA's MK-ULTRA program.

He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This is the story of little mice. David Ferrie's mice.
No, this is the story of Conjurella, and her daughter,
Glinda; they were both there when I first met David
Ferrie in Ohio, at the Old covered Bridge; so were
Mama and Daddy and Uncle Johnny. Everyone is dead now,
except me, and, I think, Glinda, so there is no one to
ask. But I think it must have been the summer of 1953.
I started school in September of 1953 at Swamp School
on Bricker Road in Emmett, Michigan; a one-room school
on a gravel road which boasted my late mother as the
CEO of its Board; it was sometime around then that the
meeting at the Old Covered Bridge took place. 

It looked something like a covered wagon, over a small
stream through a narrow road cutting through fields
and brush that stretched on forever. This was 1953.
The only war we might have lost had been over for less
than a decade. Oh-ess-ess was a whisper that lingered
in the air; a song that was over, yet the melody
haunted us. War measures meant many things to those
caught in the web of that whisper, oh-ess-ess, so
softly spoken, a love song, a lullaby, a death threat.
I don't remember, but I think that whisper was in the
air when we first met David Ferrie. Uncle Johnny
helped arrange it; Uncle Johnny said he was a finder.
Daddy and Uncle Johnny park the car right on the
bridge, and get out to take a walk -- there is
something on the car radio, or maybe Daddy and Uncle
Johnny tell us, about two escaped convicts believed
loose in that area. Mama and Conjurella get in the
front seat. Glinda and I are in the back seat. Has
MK-ULTRA begun yet? They must have given me some of
the amnesiac hypnotic drug that Dr. E, the hypnotist
whose work formed the basis for Mama's obsession with
hypnosis as noted in Castle Mirage, would later fore
on me in a more conventional setting. Glinda is my
age, she is five. she sees the Perfect soldier, David
Ferrie, standing guard. Everyone has told me: Don't
see that soldier, but Glinda says, He Sees that
soldier. 

David Ferrie uses his O.S.S. code name, Perfect
Soldier. I don't remember how I know that. He assumes
battle stances, brandishes his rifle, and threatens
the children with rape. but it is Conjurella who is
raped, by the escaped convicts who inevitably appear
as David Ferrie looks on. Glinda and I are spared,
and, I think, so is Mama. But I was too still in that
back seat throughout the attack, too oblivious to what
was happening - they had used something akin to Dr.
E's red lollipops, a favorite drug ploy of the
MK-ULTRA hypnotist who would some day send the Perfect
Soldier on a mission to kill John Kennedy. 

I have the Brass Monkey, I think Uncle Johnny gave it
to me. I don't know if it had anything to do with the
OSS. It's not brass all the way through, and it says
Germany on the bottom, not Deutchlann - Germany. 

David Ferrie is hard to remember. 

I said I went to Swamp School, that was for my first
and second grades. In the third grade, I started
parochial school, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish
School, also in Emmett. That was in September of 1955.
I attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for my third,
fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Daddy, who had always
had intermittent violent fits, accusing my mother of
an extra-marital affair (and me, of being the
offspring of a local handyman from Texas, Frank
Tilton) was on his best behavior through that period.
He had been elected, or appointed, I forget which, to
a position on the St. Clair County Board of Education,
to match my mother's, on the Swamp Board. I am trying
hard to be a Catholic religious sissy, worrying about
mortal sin, telling me priest in confession about my
Brigitte Bardot pin-ups, and studying prayerbooks. But
in the summer of 1959, after my sixth-grade year,
Daddy got in trouble. Getting out of it involved using
his family in hypnotic experiments. 

That was how we met Dr. E. And how we all met David
Ferrie again. Keep going north on M-19, and you will
reach Yale, Michigan, a tiny town with its own tiny
airport. David Ferrie, Who is calling himself David
Ferris by then, flew into the Yale airport in he
pre-dawn hours to meet with my Dad, and follow behind
us in a car, as we drove farther north, to Hopeville,
to meet the hypnotist, Dr. E. There was no doubt about
it; we were in custody. 

My Dad is introduced, and he extends his hand to David
Ferrie/Ferris and says I attended to Ferris Institute
in Big Rapids... He stresses

age, she is five. she sees the Perfect soldier, David
Ferrie, standing guard. Everyone has told me: Don't
see that soldier, but Glinda says, He Sees that
soldier. 

David Ferrie uses his O.S.S. code name, Perfect
Soldier. I don't remember how I know that. He assumes
battle stances, brandishes his rifle, and threatens
the children with rape. but it is Conjurella who is
raped, by the escaped convicts who inevitably appear
as David Ferrie looks on. Glinda and I are spared,
and, I think, so is Mama. But I was too still in that
back seat throughout the attack, too oblivious to what
was happening - they had used something akin to Dr.
E's red lollipops, a favorite drug ploy of the
MK-ULTRA hypnotist who would some day send the Perfect
Soldier on a mission to kill John Kennedy. 

I have the Brass Monkey, I think Uncle Johnny gave it
to me. I don't know if it had anything to do with the
OSS. It's not brass all the way through, and it says
Germany on the bottom, not Deutchlann - Germany. 

David Ferrie is hard to remember. 

I said I went to Swamp School, that was for my first
and second grades. In the third grade, I started
parochial school, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish

hard to be a Catholic religious sissy, worrying about
mortal sin, telling me priest in confession about my
Brigitte Bardot pin-ups, and studying prayerbooks. But
in the summer of 1959, after my sixth-grade year,
Daddy got in trouble. Getting out of it involved using
his family in hypnotic experiments. 

That was how we met Dr. E. And how we all met David
Ferrie again. Keep going north on M-19, and you will
reach Yale, Michigan, a tiny town with its own tiny
airport. David Ferrie, Who is calling himself David
Ferris by then, flew into the Yale airport in he
pre-dawn hours to meet with my Dad, and follow behind
us in a car, as we drove farther north, to Hopeville,
to meet the hypnotist, Dr. E. There was no doubt about
it; we were in custody. 

My Dad is introduced, and he extends his hand to David
Ferrie/Ferris and says I attended to Ferris Institute
in Big Rapids... He stresses the word Ferris; he
knows he is in trouble and he is looking for something
that will give him an edge conversationally. but there
is to be no conversation. A committee of MK-ULTRA
agents roughly hustle him back to his car. Back in the

Black Fog (text story w/spot illos by Gray Morrow)

Reprinted in Archie's Super Hero Special #1, January
1979, wherein my character, Hal Thunder appeared in
the same comic with such legendary characters as the
Black Hood, The Fly, The Jaguar, The Shield, and
Sabrina the Teen-Age Witch! I wrote this story after
extensive research into the 1940s MLJ writing style --
I would welcome fan attention to Hal Thunder, who
appeared,so far, in only this one story! Fan fiction
with my character meeting the MLJ greats who inspired
his creation would be welcome.

Slowly the black fog closed in, destroying his
awareness, and then...

There was no doubt in Hal Thunder's mind that the
scream had come from Linda's room. He quickened his
pace, leaping up the stairs three and four steps at a
time. His heart beat faster now, pumping adrenalin
into his powerful body.

But he felt no fear.

With one violent motion, he kicked open the door to
Linda's apartment. Linda was on the floor gasping,
her clothes torn. But still alive, thank God, he
thought.

The window! Don't let him escape! Her voice was
hysterical.

Swiftly, but with great caution, Thunder stepped out
the still-open window and onto the narrow ledge.

Then he saw the other man some three feet away. He
realized that for the first time he was face to face
with the masked arch-criminal whom he had sought so
long - the Strangler.

In an instant, Thunder evaluated the situation. If
they locked horns on this window ledge fifteen stories
above the city, surely one of them would die, if not
both. On the other hand, if he allowed the Strangler
to escape, his next attempt on Linda's life might be
successful. He could not take that chance. He moved
toward the masked man.

The Strangler fought desperately, seeming to prefer
death on the sidewalk below to capture by Hal Thunder.
Summoning all his resources, Thunder fought to keep
his balance under the force of his own blows, and the
flailing fists of the masked man.

Like a madman, the Strangler moved in, grabbing
Thunder by the throat. The movement threw them both
off balance. Thunder's efforts to tear the powerful
fingers loose were in vain, and they toppled together
off the ledge.

In a split-second, the Strangler realized what he had
done, and released his grip in mid-air. Free of the
strangle-hold, Thunder's lightning reflexes took
effect, and he grabbed the ledge with both hands as he
fell. The shock might have broken the arms of a
lesser man, but Thunder's body had long been
conditioned for such things.

He dangled above the city fifteen stories, and then...

Then a strange thought hit him.

It hit him seemingly for the first time: Who am I,
really? What am I doing here? What is happening?

It had suddenly become clear that the incident that
had just taken place had a dream-like quality. And he
had felt no fear.

There seemed to be a mist forming before him. Then
the black fog closed in.

The black fog was lifting now. Just before it did, he
realized painfully that he would have no recollection
of it.


Linda was especially beautiful today. Thunder
observed, eating his lunch. Perhaps it was because he
was so grateful that she was still alive.

He felt her admiring eyes on him as he spoke.

It looks as though this case hasn't been solved yet,
he said.

Linda stared, wide-eyed.

But the Strangler is dead now, isn't he? she asked.

There was fear in her voice, Thunder noted. 
Understandably so, he thought, after her ordeal
yesterday.

Thunder continued, One Strangler is dead, yes! But
these crimes now appear to be the work of an organized
gang!

He lit his pipe, arranged his thoughts carefully, then
spoke again.

You see, when this crime wave first hit the city, it
appeared to be the work of a lone madman - a
Jack-the-Ripper type. The victims were all women, and
all brutally murdered.

But there were too many flaws to the 'madman' angle. 
For one thing, all the victims were well-to-do. They
were always stripped of their valuables. These crimes
were very carefully planned out.

You mean the killer tried to make the murders look
like crimes of passion, when robbery was the real
motive?! Linda said.

because my family was tortured and killed.  Social
workers at the Ann Arbor homeless shelter issued that
directive, however inexplicable it may be to anyone

An Avoca man and his son, who were beaten and robbed
of more that $1,400 then bound and
gagged and set on fire, were left to die in a
flame-filled bathroom of their old farmhouse about
midnight Wednesday.
William J. Brennan, 72, of 4238 Bricker Road, and his
son, Terrance Casey Brennan, 27,
bound together with a pair of police handcuffs,
electrical cord and tape, managed to free
themselves to telephone a Michigan Bell operator for
help.
Sheriff Norman D. Meharg said Brennan and his son were
admitted to Yale Hospital for
treatment of second- and third-degree burns of their
hands and arms and head and facial injuries.
Young Brennan had been stabbed in the head several
times by his attackers.

Both men were reported in fair condition today at the
hospital.
Meharg said there have been no arrests made and so far
there are no suspects. He has assigned
Detectives Robert V. Quain and Donald E. Tuthill to
the case.
Meharg said the torture bandit were both white, armed

This is the story of the assassins. This is the story
of the cold war soldiers of AIDS. This is the story of
Conjurella DDT. This is the story of hope.

I said in Conjurella that I started school in
September of 1953. But I may have been a little late
that month. I know I was in the Yale, Michigan
hospital with asthma in September before either my
first of second year in school, I think both.

Mama and Daddy loved DDT. But Daddy hated farming. It
was sometime around then that we got rid of all the
cattle on our eighty acres of farmland in Emmett or
Avoca, we weren't sure which, because it was just out
in the country, and they'd change the postal address
on us.

But it was sometime around then, I think, before I
started school, that Mama and Daddy got into DDT. I
mean, really into it.

I was born on August 11, 1948, in a hospital in Port
Huron, Michigan. The doctor that delivered me was Dr.
Pollack, you know, like former Michigan State Senator
Lana Pollack. Later on, Mama and Daddy took me to the
railroad bridge in Beard's Hills on M-136, past Avoca,
going toward the highway that leads to Port Hope. That
was where Dr. Pollack tried to jump off, and kill
himself. He knew about MK-ULTRA. Mama said he said:

Oh, God, to bring a baby into the world to suffer so.
Oh God, to bring a baby into the world to do that.

And then he jumped. But he only broke both his legs.
He was never the same after that, they said.

After I wrote Conjurella, I remembered more about the
Old Covered Bridge meeting with David Ferrie.

After David Ferrie scared us, after they raped Aunt
Bonnie (I only made up the name Conjurella to call
her; she never called herself that), her daughter
Linda (I only made up the name Glinda to call her in
Conjurella, to make it like a fairy tale, a Ferrie
tale), says:

They're going to make us shoot John Kennedy.

That was how long they were after him.

And she did. I saw her.

After the voices, after they lifted me up, after I
initiated the firing that killed the President, they
led me groggily into the hall. And I saw that fleeting
glimpse of Linda once again.

David Ferrie had braced the rifle to the window. I
know that, because I threw myself to the floor after
firing the first shot. With the heel of my hand, I
tried to push the rifle out the window. I was willing
to die for her; I was willing to die for my secret
friend.

But this is the story of Conjurella DDT. This is the
story of the cold war soldiers.

Sometime in the early 1950s, Daddy got the idea that
the pine trees on our eighty acres had to live. He got
big cannisters of DDT, wirh sprayers on them. And then
he took me and Mama back to the woods with them.

I'm not sure David Ferrie wasn't involved. He said
tell all this if they killed him. I am.

I'm not sure how old David Ferrie was. I don't look in
any books before I write the Conjurella stuff; maybe
after, but never before. But I think he was an
assassin in World War II, maybe a child assassin, for
the O.S.S. I think I remember Aunt Bonnie saying
something about them, but I don't know any more.

Anyway, Daddy was worried about the pine trees dying
from these worms that got on them every year. There
were little worms on the pines, that lived in big
silken tents that looked like spider webs. Mama and
Daddy made me go back with them, with the DDT. I don't
know how many trips I took with them like that. My
eyes burned and wept blood, I wheezed and gasped, my
head was light, and all my skin hurt.

Finally, I said: Mama and Daddy, I can't stand any
more DDT. I can't go back to spray trees with DDT any
more.

And they didn't make me again. But that wasn't my last
exposure to DDT.

My cancer observations, too, may be 'out of
reckoning',

Castle Mirage - The Prelude:
Conjurella

Proposed introduction to Castle Mirage, by my late
mother, Alice Brennan, published June 1971 by Belmont
Books, carrying the code Belmont B75-2133, and now
offered for reprinting by the author's son, and by
Singer Media Corporation.




This is the story of little mice. David Ferrie's mice.
No, this is the story of Conjurella, and her daughter,
Glinda; they were both there when I first met David
Ferrie in Ohio, at the Old covered Bridge; so were
Mama and Daddy and Uncle Johnny. Everyone is dead now,
except me, and, I think, Glinda, so there is no one to
ask. But I think it must have been the summer of 1953.
I started school in September of 1953 at Swamp School
on Bricker Road in Emmett, Michigan; a one-room school
on a gravel road which boasted my late mother as the
CEO of its Board; it was sometime around then that the
meeting at the Old Covered Bridge took place.

It looked something like a covered wagon, over a small
stream through a narrow road cutting through fields
and brush that stretched on forever. This was 1953.
The only war we might have lost had been over for less
than a decade. Oh-ess-ess was a whisper that lingered
in the air; a song that was over, yet the melody
haunted us. War measures meant many things to those
caught in the web of that whisper, oh-ess-ess, so
softly spoken, a love song, a lullaby, a death threat.
I don't remember, but I think that whisper was in the
air when we first met David Ferrie. Uncle Johnny
helped arrange it; Uncle Johnny said he was a finder.
Daddy and Uncle Johnny park the car right on the
bridge, and get out to take a walk -- there is
something on the car radio, or maybe Daddy and Uncle
Johnny tell us, about two escaped convicts believed
loose in that area. Mama and Conjurella get in the
front seat. Glinda and I are in the back seat. Has
MK-ULTRA begun yet? They must have given me some of
the amnesiac hypnotic drug that Dr. E, the hypnotist
whose work formed the basis for Mama's obsession with
hypnosis as noted in Castle Mirage, would later fore
on me in a more conventional setting. Glinda is my
age, she is five. she sees the Perfect soldier, David
Ferrie, standing guard. Everyone has told me: Don't
see that soldier, but Glinda says, He Sees that
soldier.

David Ferrie uses his O.S.S. code name, Perfect
Soldier. I don't remember how I know that. He assumes
battle stances, brandishes his rifle, and threatens
the children with rape. but it is Conjurella who is
raped, by the escaped convicts who inevitably appear
as David Ferrie looks on. Glinda and I are spared,
and, I think, so is Mama. But I was too still in that
back seat throughout the attack, too oblivious to what
was happening - they had used something akin to Dr.
E's red lollipops, a favorite drug ploy of the
MK-ULTRA hypnotist who would some day send the Perfect
Soldier on a mission to kill John Kennedy.

I have the Brass Monkey, I think Uncle Johnny gave it
to me. I don't know if it had anything to do with the
OSS. It's not brass all the way through, and it says
Germany on the bottom, not Deutchlann - Germany.

David Ferrie is hard to remember.

I said I went to Swamp School, that was for my first
and second grades. In the third grade, I started
parochial school, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish
School, also in Emmett. That was in September of 1955.
I attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for my third,
fourth, fidth, and sixth grades. Daddy, who had always
had intermittent violent fits, accusing my mother of
an extra-marital affair (and me, of being the
offspring of a local handyman from Texas, Frank
Tilton) was on his best behavior through that period.
He had been elected, or appointed, I forget which, to
a position on the St. Clair County Board of Education,
to match my mother's, on the Swamp Board. I am trying
hard to be a Catholic religious sissy, worrying about
mortal sin, telling me priest in confession about my
Brigitte Bardot pin-ups, and studying prayerbooks. But
in the summer of 1959, after my sixth-grade year,
Daddy got in trouble. Getting out of it involved using
his family in hypnotic experiments.

That was how we met Dr. E. And how we all met David
Ferrie again. Keep going north on M-19, and you will
reach Yale, Michigan, a tiny town with its own tiny
airport. David Ferrie, Who is calling himself David
Ferris by then, flew into the Yale airport in he
pre-dawn hours to meet with my Dad, and follow behind
us in a car, as we drove farther north, to Hopeville,
to meet the hypnotist, Dr. E. There was no doubt about
it; we were in custody.

My Dad is introduced, and he extends his hand to David
Ferrie/Ferris and says I attended to Ferris Institute
in Big Rapids... He stresses the word Ferris; he
knows he is in trouble and he is looking for something
that will give him an edge conversationally. but there

This is the story of Conjurella Con II. No, the blood
has dried now; the Conjurella memories are no more.
Gone the voices: Lift him up!, gone the memory, gone
the blood.

It is a decade beyond 1963 now: ten years are passing.
No longer Dallas, but Toronto. David Ferrie is dead.
We are free.

No, this is the story of Cosmicon II, the last weekend
of January, 1973, a comic book convention held at
Winters College, part of York University in Toronto,
an extravaganza that would include future Tonight Show
guest host, P. J. O'Rourke, Ted Nugent, the first
computer game installed in North America (in the
basement of Winters), and, at the last moment, the
blood-stained legend, T. Casey Brennan

No, this is the story of women named A, of abbreviated
names, of Vampirella, of the Absinthe Cafe, of secrets
and legends and dried blood.

This is Cosmicon II. The sixties that spilled the
blood of John Kenedy were over. A memory. A blurred
vision of high school years, followed by the early
sales of fiction stories by T. Casey Brennan...was the
first a cover-featured story in the Major
Magazines/Candar Men's Group men's magazine Charger,
Feb. 1968? (they left out the T on my name on the
cover), or was it Family Curse in Jim Warren's Eerie
magazine, 1969?

Who knows? This is 1973. David Ferrie is dead; Dallas
is an aborted memory, a dream that couldn't be.

But Cosmicon II will be the scener of another murder,
the murder of the mind of the greatest comic book
publisher that ever lived, Jim Warren. A quarter
century later, a zine called Hungry Freaks would
publish Jim's accouint of a condition which seemed to
attack his central nervous sysytem, a condition which
left him helpless as his company was led to ruin, and
a court-ordered Chapter VI bankruptcy.

Dr. E is close behind; I can feel his cold presence.
Jim Warren has taken to publishing a great many of my
stories. Dr. E is displeased. I am so unsure of
myself; the sudden conversion from being a shy country
boy with few friends and a secret life, to an
overnight celebrity for the award and award
nominations I received for On the Wings of a Bird,
drawn by the late Jerry Grandeneeti, in Creepy #36,
November 1970 issue, all at the New York Comic Art
Convention at the Statler Hilton in July of 1971. I
stepped off the stage at the awards presentations,
with the Ray Bradbury Cup of Warren's own Frazetta
Awards, and nominations for both the Comic Art Fan and
Shazam Academy of Comic Book Arts awards.

Eerie #38 carried pictures of me receiving that trophy
in 1972; I think there are copies of that issue
floating around Cosmicon II. Flash-bulbs popped, fan
journalists stormed me with tape recorders, mikes, and
questions, and a new era was born in my life. Somehow,
I imagined that, in and amongst the sad, melodramatic
artistry I had perfected -- Warren's letter columns
referred to the classic T. Casey Brennan allegory,
and compared me to Dali and Rod Serling -- I could
drop little hints and clues of those secrets I carried
so well.

One of my Warren stories began with a man who
resembled me leaning out the window with a rifle,
thinking Something's going to happen soon..., but I
didn't know then, not all the time, couldn't bear the
Conjurella memory yet.

Some months earlier, I had written shadow of Dracula
for Warren's Vampirella comic book; it was recently
reprinted by Harris Comics, who bought Jim's
properties at auction after a court-ordered
bankruptcy, as Vampirella of Drakulon #3, in May 1996.
It was about the Van Helsings from the Bram Stoker
classic, Dracula, it's back in 1897, and they're
attempting to create a blood serum to cure vampirism.
Comic book writers often like to emphasize certain
words in bold-face, and when I showed Daddy, I had
emphasized the words The Project on the manuscript,
in a reference to this anti-vampirism nonsense.

Daddy points at the words The Project, and says:
You can't do that.

I say: Why not? Then I stare in bewilderment, but
inside, that bewilderment is a lie.

Deep within, the Conjurella memory lurks; deep within,
the truth that cannot be: I am only a boy, shy, frail,
sensitive, artistic, but it was my hand that pulled
the trigger. Kidnapped, drugged, tormented, injected:
I am the true cold, dark legend, Lee was innocent. I
killed the President. I shot John Kennedy.

Daddy growls the name of Dr. E.

Closer comes the Conjurella memory; Daddy is right, I
know, but I don't know how, can't remember how Dr. E
could loom forth from the 1950s to forbid me to write
something in a comic book in the 1970s.

In one world, The Project is the Port Hope office of
MK-ULTRA, a hellish reality of forced drug and
hypnosis experiments on children, that will lead to
the asassination of the President.

In another world, The Project is a component in a
vampire comic,

This is the story of the Abominations. This is the
story of Those Who Wait. Like L. Ron Hubbard and H.P.
Lovecraft, my late father, St. Clair County (Michigan)
Board of Education member William J. Brennan worked
for that Citadel of the Old Ones, the pulp magazines
of the 1940s. Two issues of the 1940s Street  Smith
companion to Weird Tales and the Shadow, Love Story
magazine, carry my dad's stories, under the
authorship, Bill Brennan.

To serve the pulps was to serve the Old Ones; to serve
them, was to behold the Necronomicon, if only in
dreams. Herman Slater, owner of the old Warlock Shoppe
in Brooklyn, after he published Me, the blood-stained
legend, in the square-backed summer 1975 edition of
Earth Religion News (not to be confused with East West
Journal November 1984, page 13, which also carries a
write-up on me -- but that happened in Berkeley, when
they tried to kill Manson, so I must talk about that
later, much later), published his own fictitious
NECRONOMICON, what the Necronomicon might be like.
No...

No, this is the story of Lynette Fromme, one of my
friends, a girl from Ann Arbor, met her while she was
being transferred from one prison to another. It was a
girl I lived with for a long time, she was never my
lover, she was just my landlady, but we got introduced
by the late Ernie Brown, of Ann Arbor's cable channel
9, host of numerous Ann Arbor cablevision shows, the
last being entitled Simply You. Ernie died of
pneumonia in December of 1996, at the age of 39, after
introducing me to the girl who had met Lynette Fromme.


But now the Conjurella Fever begins, now the story
comes forth, now the bleak memories of things that
cannot be...

No, this is the story of Eponymous Hawking, and the
Chandrashakar Limit, of dinosaurs that take back the
earth, of black holes and time warpsof the boy who
shot John Kennedy, who, still a boy in Berkeley,
witnesses the aftermath of an attempt on Manson's
life...

Eponymous Hawking fears the night. Eponymous Hawking
fears the long, dark night. His tongue has been cut
out, his mentor has proven himself an MK-ULTRA agent,
he has only one ally: his mentor's wife. He will
survive. Like the other MK-ULTRA experiments, like any
life Dr. E ever touched, he is made of steel. He will
survive. Like Howard Brennan, he lied. He knows.

In the known universe, there are about a hundred
million galaxies, each with about a hundred million
stars.

To my knowledge, there is no proof that ANY of these
stars has a planetary system, like our own sun, Sol.
This observation is extremely significant,,, vis-avis,
the Chandrashakar Limit. The Chandrashakar Limit
determines which stars have sufficient mass to
collapse into that paradox of physics, the black hole.
Beneath the Chandrashakar Limit, a star, upon
expiring, collapses into something at least comparable
to ordinary matter, a White Dwarf, at the extreme. A
White Dwarf is still matter which obeys the ordinary
laws of physics, unly under extreme density.

Above the Chandrashakar Limit, the star collapses into
a black hole. A black hole is a virtually infinitely
compact mass of time-space, drawing adjacent
time-space into its core. The event horizon of a black
hole prevents the entire universe from falling into
such a collapsed star. The event horizon is a kind of
shell surrounding a black hole. Yet, worm holes escape
from a black hole, sending a warping effect to all
time-space within their reach. A planet falling into a
black hole can reverse in time, can enter parallell
worlds, and it's own distant past.

The Abominations. Where man rules now, they ruled
before, where man rules now, they shall rule again.
Man's rule upon the earth has been but a whisper, a
heartbeat, that fleeting moment of Goethe's Faust,
one brief moment compared to endless ages when the
dinosaurs ruled, when no mammal walked, when serpents
ruled, masked and mystical, cowled and crimson, cold
and dark, of the night, of the night...

The Conjurella dream is so difficult to tell.

In 1975, my career as an award-winning comic book
writer for the Warren magazines, Creepy, Eerie, and
Vampirella (Marilyn Manson has a tatoo of Uncle Creepy
on his arm), was virtually totalled. I was reduced to
writing essays claiming to be the reincarnation of
Roaring Twenties satanist, Aleister Crowley, as
published in such magazines as Llewellyn's GNOSTICA
(#30, 31? Ciurca 1977), Earth Religion News, and a
mid-1970s issue of the British zine Insight, from
Crowleyan Deric R. James.

Anyway, it all led to two links to Manson.

This is the story of how I went to see the Webfairy.
This is the story of the last witch. This is the
story of love of trains and the Old Ones, and how I
found the Wai Lana yoga show. This is the story of
the Kundalini serpent which lurks within.

By the alleged spring of 2002, my Kundalini had risen
up again, I had murmured their barbarous, unspeakable
names, and I had set out on a new route of fame.
Anonymity was a virtue I had lost. Anonymity had
allowed me to migrate from lifestyle to lifestyle,
place to place, publisher to publisher, the left hand
never knowing what the right was doing: some time in a
witchcraft coven here, a John Birch chapter there, a
document signed by Clinton in my honor (January 1990
was T. CASEY BRENNAN MONTH in the State of Arkansas),
a place in a free meal or a shelter or a Krishna
temple, my stories in early '70s issues of the Seventh
Day Adventist mag, LISTEN, or written up in the
July/August 1987 DEMOCRATIC JOURNALIST from Communist
Prague. In the mid-1970s, I had accepted periodic
invitations to stay at the Florida home of a witch I
knew as Artemis. The now legendary Herman Slater of
Brooklyn's Warlock Shop, had also accepted her
invitation, and Artemis frequently told me of his stay
with her. Slater had published my work in his occult
journal, EARTH RELIGION NEWS, before publishing his
own version of H.P. Lovecraft's NECRONOMICON, much
debated among enthusiasts as to whether it was a book
Lovecraft had made up or found. Slater never claimed
his version was the actual NECRONOMICON, only that he
had found essays from the same time period ascribed to
the creation of the NECRONOMICON, so that it was, in
Slater's view, what the NECRONOMICON might be like.
But the magical essays which made up Slater's version
of the NECRONOMICON developed their own mythology.
They had been stolen, they said, from a library by an
Old Catholic Archbishop, named Simon. Ironicly, I once
spent the better part of an afternoon walking around
Brooklyn with Archbishop Simon, having met him by
chance at the Warlock Shop, without a clue as to who
he really was or would do, or that he would abruptly
disappear from view after providing the ancient essays
for Slater's book, now sometimes called the
Simonomicon. Anyway, it was with Herman's friend
Artemis that I oftened stayed in Florida, alternating
that with brief flings in the inexpensive,
elevatorless, and often cockroach ridden hotels that
then lined that area of Miami Beach which overlooked
their free beach, Lummus Park. Later, the only Arab
mayor of Miami Beach, Alex Daoud, who would soon face
prison on questionable charges involving city
contracts, would write about me in these words: City
of Miami Beach PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: T. CASEY BRENNAN
is sincerely concerned about the well-being of
children and has shown untiring efforts to inform
children of the ill effects of cigarette, pipe and
cigar smoking; and WHEREAS: In his effort to inform
children of these ill-effects, T. CASEY BRENNAN has
gone on a one-person crusade to prohibit the
illustration of smoking in children's comic books; and
WHEREAS: Because of this crusade, T. CASEY BRENNAN has
had a serious impact on the comic book industry
causing several of the most prominent comic strip
series and characters to forsake smoking; and,
WHEREAS: The City of Miami Beach applauds T. CASEY
BRENNAN for his dedication and effort in encouraging
the youth of today to make wise decisions concerning
their health. NOW THEREFORE, DO I, Alex Daoud, Mayor
of the City of Miami Beach, proclaim the month of
January 1989 as T. CASEY BRENNAN MONTH in the City of
Miami Beach. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set
my hand and caused the great seal of the City of Miami
Beach to be affixed. DATE January 1, 1989 MAYOR Alex
Daoud. In my own way, I loved Artemis too. She was
delicate, pretty, and very much the hobbyist kind of
witch. Or, well, maybe. I often wonder if she didn't
put a spell on me to make me forget the name of that
damned Processian. In the days before the Son of Sam
killings, she told me how one of the Church of the
Process cultists had sought her out. The Processian
had been a priest, she said, and his attributes
included that he served both Christ and Satan, and
generally eschewed sex. But, to my horror, she went on
to explain, after months of professed abstinence on
his part, he had sex with her in her hospital bed as
she was recovering from surgery. Generally, however,
the coven of Artemis consisted of articulate
suburbanites; hobbyists who haunted occult bookstores
and hobbyists. I began to theorize that the Processian
was calling Artemis, demanding my removal from the
coven. Perhaps he was. Or perhaps I had imagined it
all; a decade later, I would join a dissident Krishna
sect in Berkeley, then find the Temple set upon by
reporters, when a former imprisoned priest, who had

This is the story of two dreams, two Hare Krishna
gurus, and the Kennedy assassination.  In the period
from late 1983 till mid 1985, I had left my adopted
home of Ann Arbor, Michigan and journeyed to
California.  In the 1970s, I had been known as a
popular comic book writer, my work appearing in such
titles as Warren comics' CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA,
DC's HOUSE OF MYSTERY, Archie's RED CIRCLE SORCERY and
a few scattered small press publishers such as POWER
COMICS, FANTASY QUARTERLY, and the Canadian ORB.  But
1983 had found me destitute, and, with the help of my
friends, I traveled to California, hoping for more
professional validation.  Favors from a power
structure which now just barely accepted me had been
slim; California had brought me a few scattered radio
and television interviews, a comic con guest
appearance at a building in Berkeley's Sproul Plaza,
and a write-up in the U.N. World Health Organization
magazine WORLD HEALTH, published in every major
language in the world, October 1983 issue, page
30...look for it at your local UN office, your public
library, or your university's public health library --
a follow-up report on me appeared in WORLD HEALTH,
January-February 1986, page 9.  Then WORLD HEALTH
magazine editor Peter Ozorio had been supportive of my
purported work, as an award winning comic book writer,
to ban smoking in comic books.  Later, in an interview
in COMIC BOOK ARTIST magazine's excellent history of
Warren Publishing Company, THE WARREN COMPANION, I
would admit that it had all been a desperate publicity
stunt.  But then, in the mid 80s, it had been a
vehicle for keeping my name and work alive, in a
decade before the internet took hold, when the fans of
my comic books had all but forgotten me.

Though this is a story, not only of dreams, but of
drugs, cults, and murder, it must be prefaced with
background information on my work.  The 90s had
produced not only my trade paperback, VAMPIRELLA:
TRANSCENDING TIME  SPACE, a compilation of Vampirella
stories by myself and Steve Englehart, but also my
story of my adventures at the Berkeley Krishna Temple,
whose title was a take-off on the title of my book:
CONJURELLA FEVER: TRANSCENDING TIME  MK-ULTRA.The
story had been published twice, in a comic book called
THE STORK, back when editor Ray Earles had been intent
on making THE STORK look like an underground comic,
and in the Winter 1998 issue of an Austin, Texas based
rock and roll magazine called SALT FOR SLUGS, carried
internationally by Tower Records.  March 1984 had
found me penniless in Berkeley; I appeared at the
Krishna Temple there, on 2334 Stuart St., suitcases in
hand, and nowhere to go.  I had run the gamut seeking
money from friends and political contacts; Peter
Ozorio had arranged for a check to be sent to me c/o
General Delivery, Berkeley, from a United Nations
account in Zurich, based on the first WORLD HEALTH
article.  The check had only a serial number for the
issuer, and an illegible signature, but had been sent
via airmail with a signed United Nations voucher; I
had had no difficulty in cashing the check at the Best
of Two Worlds comic book store in Berkeley, who knew
me by name and professional reputation, but by now, it
was long gone.  In that bygone era, the Krishna
people, besieged by scandals, had begun the long
process of excommunicating their ill-behaved gurus,
and, strangely, had initiated the process by ousting
the least offensive of them, saving the worst for
last.  The first two excommunicated gurus, Srila
Hansadutta and Srila Jayatirtha, were denizens of the
San Francisco Bay, as I was now, quite unwillingly.  I
would have traded an arm to get back to Michigan then,
but no one was buying human arms, so I stayed, quite
miserable and mistreated, in the temple of poor
Hansadutta, whom I later maligned for his escapades,
in the aforementioned FEVER story.  In that story, I
had omitted my brief adventure with the Krishna
people's only LSD guru, Srila Jayatirtha, much like my
mentors, saving the worst for last.  Jayatirtha had,
it was said, originally been a protege of Timothy
Leary.  According to legend, he had renounced LSD
before accepting the Krishna guruship, then later,
resumed the practice, resulting in his eventual
excommunication.

But this was the tale of two dreams.  In 1996, I had
written a story called Castle Mirage: the Prelude -
Conjurella, alleging my own, and my late parents'
unwilling involvement with the JFK assassination.  It
was posted immediately by several conspiracy

This is about getting a sleazy rag called PARANOIA
MAGAZINE off the stands.  On their website, they
recently printed an attack on J.R. Fesperman of Desert
Moon Periodicals (web address dmoon.com).  I took the
opportunity to thank Fesperman for whatever he did to
them (see email below).  I urge anyone reading this to
do everything they can to BANKRUPT PARANOIA MAGAZINE!


Mr. Fesperman:

Thanks for your wonderful work in bringing the
hate-mongering PARANOIA MAGAZINE to its knees.  On my
end, I have contacted countless distributors and
retail outlets, urging them not to carry this trash.
What's more, you may be interested to know that we are
currently preparing a petition to be circulated in all
fifty states demanding the arrest of the pseudonymous
Al Hidell and Joan D'arc under anti-terrorism
laws.  To my knowledge, no more outlets in my home
town of Ann Arbor, Michigan carry PARANOIA; I'd like
to think that this is partly because of my efforts.
This is a victory, but it is hardly enough -- Al
Hidell and Joan D'Arc belong in the federal
penitentiary system.  Let's do all we can to put them
there.
