Soldiering is for others
Taki
 Gstaad

All Quiet on the Western Front was written in 1929 and became an instant best-seller; in Germany alone more than 3 million copies were sold within 18 months. Hollywood made a film of it the following year and it won an Oscar for Best Picture. I read it during the closing days of the second world war, my great uncle, a German scholar, helping me along. I saw the film in 1949 and never forgot the haunting scene when the hero, Paul Baumer, kills a Frenchman who had randomly jumped into his foxhole in no-mans-land. Baumer bayonets him in the throat, after which he watches the man die slowly, gurgling blood. Overcome by guilt, the German comforts the Frenchman and, after the latters death, he finds photographs of his loved ones tucked inside his uniform. In other words, the enemy is just like us.

Don McCullin echoed the haunting scenario when he photographed a dead Viet Cong soldier in Hue in 1968, his plundered belongings lying beside him, a picture of his pretty sweetheart facing his dead eyes. I remember the photo only too well. It shook me like no other. The evil, or so we thought, VC also had feelings, and took pictures of their loved ones into combat just like the rest of us. Both the film and Dons photograph were in black and white, adding great dramatic effect.

Ive just been given the McCullin book, and an Erich Maria Remarque biography by Hilton Tims for my birthday, both books confirming my recent anti-war feelings about old men sending young ones to die. Heres a United States Marine, Roger McGrath, writing in Chronicles magazine (best American monthly by far) about war:

And who is to do it? Certainly not the neoconservatives. They use such terms as moral clarity and the need to project our power but it is to be done with someone elses body. A conversation I had with a budding neocon reveals their version of moral clarity. Who was included when he said we. He looked at me as if I were a bit dense and said, We, the United States. Does that mean you? I asked. No, he replied, the guys in the army.

McGrath goes on to ask the neocon whether our boys should be put in harms way for interests that have nothing to do with the defence of the United States. Are you willing to do what you call the right thing with your own body? asks the Marine. Those guys are volunteers they chose to do it. Im just finishing my degree and have a good job lined up.

Need I say more? The neocon is not a soldier and does not plan to become one. Soldiering is for others. In a republic, it is the job of citizens. In an empire, it is imperial forces who do the fighting. Another Marine, Major-General Smedley Butler, twice decorated with the Medal of Honour, making him one of only two Marines in history to win the greatest battlefield decoration twice, had this to say about war: War is just a racket...I believe in adequate defence of our coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes here, then well fight. I wouldnt go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. I would only fight for the defence of our homes and for the Bill of Rights.

Hear, hear! I remember landing in Tel Aviv in 1973. The Yom Kippur war had just begun and I was covering it for a Greek newspaper and National Review. I had to file two stories a day from the Golan front where vicious fighting was raging. The Syrians gave a good account of themselves, as did the Egyptians on the Sinai side. But they did not take care of their dead soldiers. Unlike the Israelis who picked up their dead, the Arabs left them to rot in the desert. I saw hundreds of young bodies lying around, and imagined their fat masters back in Damascus and Cairo covered in medals and sipping sweet coffee.

After Hue in 1972, where the expected battle never took place American air strikes by B-52s caught the invading Giap army in the open (I can still remember the stink of dead human flesh) and the Yom Kippur war, I decided war was not such a good thing after all. All Quiet on the Western Front attests to a common humanity transcending nation, race, and religion. Erich Maria Remarque became a pacifist because he had fought the war in the trenches. The neocons never have and do not plan to, and do not deserve the right to send anyone to die except themselves.

Crossing the Rubicon
by Jacob G. Hornberger, July 11, 2003

Have you noticed how many Americans get upset over the comparisons that are increasingly being made between the United States and National Socialist Germany? After all, its not as though were living in a police state, right?

Well, if U.S. officials could somehow assure us that the U.S. governments treatment of accused terrorists isnt moving in the same direction in which Nazi Germany treated accused traitors, maybe that would help to put those comparisons to rest.

Habeas corpus

Contrary to popular opinion, the cornerstone of a free society lies not with the freedoms enumerated in the First Amendment. Theyre important, but much more important is what very well could be considered to be the lynchpin of a free society the right of habeas corpus a right that is guaranteed within the original Constitution itself.

Assume that a government has the power to seize anyone it wants within the country and execute him the next day, without any trial whatsoever. Ask yourself: What difference would it make if people in that society had freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion? What difference would it make if they had the right to peaceably assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances?

Having those rights would mean nothing at all, if the government had the omnipotent power to seize any person, including people exercising those rights, and execute him the very next day. Indeed, how many people would exercise those intellectual, political, and religious freedoms without government permission after a few well-publicized executions?

Thats why Thomas Macaulay, in his History of England, described the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679 as the most stringent curb that ever legislation imposed on tyranny. Its why the Framers included the following language in the Constitution: The privilege of the writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it. Its why the U.S. Supreme Court in 1969 described the writ of habeas corpus as the fundamental instrument for safeguarding individual freedom against arbitrary and lawless state action.

Consider the words of the great 19th-century legal scholar A.V. Dicey:

There is little difficulty, and there is often very little gain, in declaring the existence of a right to personal freedom. The true difficulty is to secure its enforcement. The Habeas Corpus Acts have achieved this end, and have done for the liberty of Englishmen more than could have been achieved by any declaration of rights.

How does habeas corpus work? Suppose the executive branch of the federal government takes someone into custody without charging him with a crime. That person has the right to file a petition for writ of habeas corpus in a federal district court that is, within the judicial branch of our federal government.

If the federal judge issues the writ, it is a judicial order commanding the executive branch to produce the body of the person it is holding and show cause why that person is being held against his will. (If he refuses to issue the writ, that order can be appealed to the federal court of appeals.) Assuming the writ is issued, a prompt hearing is scheduled, and if the executive branch is unable to provide adequate grounds for holding the person, the judge orders his immediate release. Under our system of government, the executive branch must comply with the judges order.

Obviously, then, the purpose of habeas corpus is to ensure that someone is not being held (and punished) for no good reason. By precluding the incarceration and punishment of an innocent person, habeas corpus provides the cornerstone for the exercise of all other freedoms, without fear of being arrested and punished for exercising them. It is one of a free societys most powerful checks against the exercise of dictatorial and tyrannical power.

Civil liberties and due process of law

Habeas corpus, however, obviously isnt enough to secure peoples freedom from arbitrary and tyrannical government. Suppose the government is able to provide evidence that a person has committed a criminal offense. Then the question arises: Under what circumstances and under what standards will the person be tried, convicted, and punished? Thats what civil liberties and due process of law are all about. Thats why our ancestors added the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments soon after the enactment of the original Constitution.

Ever since our countrys founding, it has been well established that every person who is accused of a crime by the federal government foreigner and citizen alike must be tried under the principles of due process of law, which are enumerated in the Bill of Rights. Those due process principles include trial by jury, the right to counsel, the right to confront witnesses, and the right

The Hypocrisy of it All
by Joseph Clifford

The US "pre-emptively" attacked Iraq because we "think" Iraq might have Weapons of Mass Destruction. The US has threatened Iraq with the largest bomb (22,000) ever used in the history of the world.

Because Iraq defied the United Nations, the US makes war on Iraq in defiance of the United Nations.

President Bush said we will liberate the Iraqi people, and they will rejoice in our arrival. The Iraqi people are resisting to the death.

President Bush said "We know Iraq has WMD and chemical weapons", but none has been used by Iraq, nor found.

Saddam Hussein did a horrible thing in gassing the Kurds said Tony Blair.

Great Britain gassed both the Kurds and the people of Iraq in the 1920s.

Saddam Hussein did a horrible thing in gassing the Kurds said George Bush.

The US government gassed, and then burned, our own people in Wacco, Texas.

The US is afraid that Iraq will give or sell WMD to other people. The US sells more WMD than all the nations in the world put together.

The US has warned Iraq that if they use Weapons of Mass Destruction in retaliation against us, they will be guilty of War Crimes, while Shock and Awe will unleash more WMD than the world has ever seen.

According to Pres. Bush, the US will prosecute Iraqi leaders for War Crimes.

President Bush last year refused to participate in the new International Criminal Court, and is currently demanded immunity from War Crimes.

Hussein was horrific for gassing the Kurds. We supplied him with the gas.

This war against Iraq is to make us safer from Al-Quaeda. Al Quaeda was born as a result of Americans invading Iraq in 1991.

We must never allow Iraq to get one nuclear weapon because he might use them. We have 6,000 and have used them.

Bush has brought the nation to the brink of nuclear war with North Korea because they abandoned a treaty with the US. Since Bush has been in the office he has unilaterally abandoned 5 treaties with the world.

The administration insisted the War in Iraq has "nothing to do with oil", but the very first territory seized by the US were the southern oil fields.

Its not about oil according to the administration, while the Pentagon named two posts in Iraq Forward Operating Base Exxon, and Forward Operating Base Shell.

Donald Rumsfeld insisted that American prisoners of war must be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention and argued that to show their pictures on TV would violate the Geneva Convention, while holding 3000 Afghanis in cages with no Geneva agreements being observed. There have been 2 deaths and 20 suicide attempts in these wonderful detention facilities. The military has admitted to "beating to death" 2 prisoners while attempting to get information.

The US blasted France for "threatening" to Veto a war resolution. The last time France used the veto was 7 years ago, while the US used the veto three months ago, and has been historically the second biggest user of the veto in the UN history.

The French are silly because they do not understand why war is needed. France lost 4.2 million people in World War I.

The US claimed the Iraqis were using "dirty" tactics in the war because they were fighting out of uniform and in civilian clothes. During the American Revolution we invented the "dirty" tactic of fighting out of uniform and from behind trees and stonewalls.

MIDAS EARS
by Israel Shamir

A new spectre haunts America. It enters the well-protected boardrooms of newspapers and banks, shakes the deep foundations of its towers. It is the spectre of glasnost: the dark secret of Jewish power is out. Just recently it was 'third rail',  touch-and-die, deadly dangerous to mention, certain end to a career. Just recently, Joe Public snapped his TV from an eminence with an Israeli passport to a member of a Jewish think-tank, and muttered to himself: Surely it is just a coincidence that so many important and largely unelected people in our country happen to belong to this small minority group. Surely it is just a coincidence that they belong to different parties but reach the same conclusions. Surely it is just a coincidence that ninety per cent of American foreign aid goes to their cousins in prosperous Tel Aviv. Surely it is just a coincidence that they run our newspapers, television, cinema, universities. Anyway, we are not allowed to notice this elephant in our sitting room.

Only rare desperados comment, as Edgar Steele did on Rense.com: "The silence in America concerning Jews is simply deafening, isn't it? The old adage has it that, when visiting a foreign country, to ascertain who really runs things, one need determine only who is spoken about in whispers, if at all." Judged by this measure, the Jews rule supreme. Indeed, when I referred to 'Jewish media lords' during a UNESCO conference in the summer of 2001, the audience's hearts missed a beat.

The yet-unfought War on Iraq changed this. The American Ultimatum date was set on 17 March, the Jewish feast of Purim. Purim, 1991 saw destruction of Iraqi armies and death of 200,000 Iraqis. Too many coincidences for a purely American war. The Americans peeped into the bottomless abyss of World War Three and woke up from their generation-long stupor. Thus the first victim of the Iraqi War is not truth, but the strongest taboo in the West. A Democrat member of Congress, usually a most docile specimen, one James Moran, dared to tell his supporters: "If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq we would not be doing this."

He was immediately slapped by a Jewish overseer: "It is simply stunning to hear Representative Moran make such accusations", said National Jewish Democratic Council Executive Director, Ira N. Forman. "First, a number of the current leaders of the anti-war movement are Jewish, and Jewish organizations have clearly not been at the forefront among those groups actively and stridently supporting a war in Iraq". Forman had spoken, and the media reported and amplified his view, and Moran duly recanted, slapped. But he is not the only one.

The secret is out, and like the secret of King Midas and his long ears, it is being sung now from coast to coast, despite the frantic efforts of the organised Jewish community to clamp the lid back on the boiling cauldron. Kathleen and Bill Christison,[i] two ex-CIA experts, exposed the link between right-wing American Jews and the Bush Administration. Edward Said, the most celebrated American thinker of Palestinian origin, stated the cause: "An immensely wealthy and powerful republic has been hijacked by a small cabal of individuals, all of them unelected and therefore unresponsive to public pressure."[ii]

He was seconded by courageous Herman, Neumann and Blankfort. These Americans of Jewish origin object to the un-elected, anti-democratic Jewish power as they would object to any disproportionate minority power. Their presence, as they were not afraid of the anti-Semitic label, was instrumental in turning the tide and saving the intimidated majority from its browbeating.

Edward Herman, the author of Manufacturing Consent (together with Noam Chomsky), wrote of "the powerful pro-Israel lobby in the United States, which advances Israeli interests by pushing for U.S. aid and protection to Israel, and, currently, by pressing for a war against Iraq, which again will serve Israeli interests. This lobby has not only helped control media debate and made congress into `Israeli occupied territory', it has seen to it that numerous officials with 'dual loyalties' occupy strategic decision-making positions in the Bush administration."

Jeffrey Blankfort, the Californian who defeated ADL in court and made Foxman pay heaps of dollars for his espionage against activists, took an important next step and rejected the views upheld by Noam Chomsky, Joel Beinin and Stephen Zunes, for these older radicals play down the crucial importance of Jewish power. Jeff Blankfort noticed the roots of the Rupture Evangelicals' meteoric rise in the US. This obscure sect would never have left its lair in remote Dixie, but for the Jewish media lords. Jeff noticed that when Black Entertainment Television was taken over by Viacom, whose owner, Sumner Redstone (né

THOMAS JEFFERSON CALLING: The time for revolution is now
By John Kaminski
March 6, 2003

THOMAS JEFFERSON CALLING: The time for revolution is now

By John Kaminski, [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Watch for John Kaminskis new book, AMERICAS AUTOPSY REPORT, to be published soon by Dandelion Books, for sale at www.GoOFF.com.

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience [has] shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

"Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."- two quotes from Thomas Jefferson

Have you noticed? America is on the wrong side of every conflict in the world.

America encourages slavery and economic exploitation, and opposes individual rights and people's self determination - everywhere in the world. And now, with its new hardcore police-state laws, even in America itself.

No more the land of the free and home of the brave. That's long gone. Now it's the land of the financially pulverized and the home of grotesquely overpaid executroids who will say anything for the right price. Lie to anyone, friend or foe. Betray anyone for those thirty pieces of silver. Bribe other countries in order to get them to do things that everybody realizes are wrong. Poison its own soldiers because somebody makes billions getting rid of nuclear waste. Even kill a lot of its own citizens with medicines that are never tested, and protect the vicious felons who distribute these poisons from shattered parents mourning their dead children. Judasland, that's the America we have now.

Americans don't tell the truth to anyone, least of all themselves. And I direct this at not just the government, but also at the American people.

Y'know, it's easy to say we've been victimized by bad schools and coma-inducing TV, disgustingly manipulative movies, and a climate of elitist intolerance reflected in one-sided media versions of history.

It's one thing to be deceived, but it's quite another not to have seen all these crimes that have happened right in front our eyes since the Kennedy assassination. I mean: How stupid are we?

How stupid are we to believe that on one day in 2001, we had no air defenses for the entire Northeast region of the country? And that just happened to be the day when "terrorists" decided to fly four big jetliners into national landmarks. As Gerard Holmgren so eloquently said recently, how stupid are we to believe a conspiracy theory as far-fetched as that, one that was engineered by disaffected Arabs in a cave? See http://www.911-strike.com/debunking.htm

So, yes, we can keep blaming our bad luck and lack of attention to political reality, but let's not forget to blame ourselves in all this. And blame ourselves right now for not already having stopped an entire Congress intent on covering up the most important event of our lives, and then timidly approving the wars of our new dictator who seeks to keep the population deceived with one murderous escapade after another.

How stupid are we to believe all of it? Or any of it?

How stupid are we not to know the stock market crashed months ago and is being propped up by the Plunge Protection Team?

How stupid are we not to know that nothing the Bush Administration says remotely resembles an honest assessment of conditions in the world. All those satanic shills say is designed to ease their task of stealing money from people everywhere.

Recently many high profile Americans have been caught in embarrassing lies. Although the media tries to cover them as best they can, more and more people are noticing that everything the Bush administration says is a spin, and none of it is an honest recounting of actual events.

If Powell and Bush are telling lies now about reasons to invade Iraq - and getting caught at those lies regularly - how are we to know that they weren't telling lies about the demolition of the World Trade Center, when it was considered unpatriotic to question the official version of events?

If they're lying now, what kind of stupid do you have to be to believe they were telling the truth then? Pretty stupid, is what I'd say.

I bet it's just hysterical when Poppy Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld get together and laugh about how efficiently they've ripped off the American people. Cheney can brag that Halliburton, through its Brown Root subsidiary, had made trillions off all these frequent U.S. military deployments in which his company provides the crappy chow and the tossed-up buildings. With plenty more

Crimes before the fact
Bob Barr

In last year's mega-hit movie "Minority Report," starring Tom Cruise in a mid-21st-century sci-fi thriller, D.C. police identify persons who have not yet committed a crime, but who, based on premonition evidence are going to commit a crime, and then swoop in and arrest these pre-criminals before they can carry out their dastardly deeds.

A fine movie; I saw it and liked it. Well, it isn't even 2054 (the year in which the movie is set), and already, Washington-area police — in this case, Fairfax County, Va.'s finest — are taking the movie to heart, and putting it into practice now.

Seems the local constabularies are getting bored actually waiting for crimes to be committed, and then, based on actual evidence, practicing good police work and arresting the perpetrators.

The gendarmes are going into local area bars undercover, waiting for patrons to imbibe what might possibly be too much inside the bar, forcing them outside for a mandatory blood-alcohol content test and, if they fail, citing them. In some instances, eschewing the boredom of operating undercover, they are charging in with full, SWAT regalia, and pulling patrons outside the bar. All this with no evidence whatsoever the poor souls enjoying a drink at the local pub were going to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive under the influence.

Perhaps the Fairfax County Police Department has its own "pre cog" — the strange humans in "Minority Report" who envision the future and identify the criminals before they are criminals, in order for the police to arrest them and save potential victims of crimes. Maybe this Fairfax pre cog relays to the men and women in blue a vision of these potential evildoers who are drinking too much and might do something bad.

Or, perhaps the police in Fairfax County don't have a clue these bar patrons will or will not drive under the influence — which certainly is a crime and certainly ought to be stopped and punished. Perhaps they are simply police officers whose sensibilities are enraged by people in a bar having a good time, even if perhaps drinking more than local Officer Muldoon condones.

The department's explanation that it is against the law to be intoxicated in a public place (including a bar), is nonsense, even if, in a hyper-technical sense, correct. Someone perhaps ought to remind Fairfax County that bars actually exist as places in which people drink alcohol; it's not only legal, it's encouraged.

This actually is a frightening scenario that one hopes is nipped in the bud. Not only is this sort of Gestapolike behavior chilling in the extreme, but if condoned or encouraged, will find its way into other areas of detaining or arresting people for potential criminal behavior.

Come to think of it, however, we're already on the way to that scenario, what with the manner in which law-abiding citizens are subject to humiliating, public partial strip searches for no reason other than they might have looked at an airport security person in the wrong way, or bought a ticket in a manner different from their usual routine.

All this fits right in with the "Eye-in-the-Sky" perspective of retired Adm. John Poindexter and the cherished Total Information Awareness system he's building at the Pentagon — collect all the information on as many people as you can in advance, decide who might be bad, and act on it. So what if you invade the privacy of virtually every law-abiding citizen in the country; you might be able to possibly identify a potential lawbreaker. The good retired admiral would really like those guys down at the Fairfax precinct. They're his kind of guys.

We are already, as a society, reaping what we've sown. And this is not the movies, folks.

Rep. Bob Barr, Georgia Republican, is the American Conservative Union Foundation's 21st century chairman for privacy and freedom.

Permanent War State
by Charley Reese

The American republic died at Appomattox in 1865, replaced by a national government that has gradually evolved into an empire in a permanent state of war.

Most of us don't pay much attention to such stuff as history and perspective. Certainly the news media don't. Nevertheless, there are consequences of living in a war state, both to our own individual freedom and to our pocketbooks.

This past week, President Bush made a big deal about signing a military authorization bill with a $30 billion increase. Here we are, 12 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and without a credible enemy in sight we are still spending nearly $400 billion annually on defense. It is not really the cost of defense, but rather the cost of an empire.

The United States is the largest arms dealer in the world. Since 1992, the United States has exported more than $142 billion worth of weaponry to states around the world. Keep this in mind when you hear Washington politicians decry the proliferation of weapons such as air-to-ground missiles. We've exported more than two-and-a-half times as many weapons as the No. 2 and No. 3 states — the United Kingdom and Russia, respectively.

In 2001, total world arms transfer agreements were worth nearly $26.4 billion, and the United States accounted for 45.8 percent of them. The U.S. arms industry, by the way, is the second-most-heavily subsidized industry after agriculture. In 1999, the United States supplied arms or military technology to 92 percent of all the conflicts around the globe. This military largesse often goes to nondemocratic countries with abominable human-rights records.

But in addition to being the world's chief arms peddler, we also train the military personnel in more than 70 countries and have our own troops stationed in nearly 100 foreign countries. It has not been unusual for Americans to end up fighting people with American equipment and American training. The missiles on the wings of the Chinese fighter plane that collided with our intelligence aircraft were Israeli copies of American missiles. People trained and armed by the CIA during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan founded much of al-Qaida.

It's unnecessary to the real defense of the United States and its people. There is no country on Earth in a position to invade us with conventional forces. Only two countries, Russia and China, have the capability of attacking us with intercontinental ballistic missiles. Terrorists, while they are now receiving the bulk of the government's propaganda attention, cannot threaten our national security in any way, though they can, of course, kill some of us. But remember that in 2001, terrorists killed 3,000 of us, while 90,000 of us died in accidents. Even our own homegrown criminals killed 13,000 people, or four times as many as the terrorists. Police departments didn't get a $30 billion budget increase.

Scaring the home folks with "enemies at the gates" is the oldest ploy in human history for justifying an all-powerful government. Give us your money and your liberty, and we will protect you from the barbarians. Of course, the supply of barbarians proves to be infinite, for as soon as one enemy is defeated or collapses, another is manufactured.

Unless we find a way to reverse course and return to our republican ways, our imperial government will collapse under the weight of its own profligate spending and corruption. A government that lies, keeps secrets, spies on its own people and tries to control every aspect of their lives is a far cry from the American republic that existed from 1787 to 1865.

EDMONTON JOURNAL 20/9/02

End the billion-dollar gun registry boondoggle: The Liberals
have lost interest in this ineffective operation, but fear to close
it down.

Something appears to have gone drastically wrong at the national
gun registry in July, but it is difficult to find anyone who will
admit it.

No, let me rephrase that: Lots of people inside and outside the
registry will admit something went wrong. Rather, there are
conflicting reports over how drastic the foul-up was, and whether it
was out of the ordinary.

Several gun owners -- scores, if not hundreds or even thousands --
received letters this summer asking them to re-register firearms they
had already registered.

One source, a senior Liberal staffer on Parliament Hill, insists
this was made necessary by a "huge crash of the processing
computers," sometime in early July. He also insists the crash wiped
out "thousands" of firearms records entered into the computers around
or just after Christmas -- more like tens of thousands.

Another source, this one closer to the Department of Justice,
which runs the registry, says there were indeed "delay problems" in
July, but they were nothing unusual. The system is prone to "periodic
interruptions" during which no files are lost because all
registration records are kept in duplicate on separate computers
systems.

Frankly, I tend to believe this latter source when he claims
disasters are run-of-the-mill fare at the registry, and also when he
claims safeguards are built into the computers to ensure vital
information is never lost.

Still, it strikes me as funny that the government's explanation
for why no one should be concerned about the July crash is, in
essence, "Don't worry, that happens all the time."

Plenty of gun owners reported an inability to get through to the
firearms registry both on the phone and via the Internet at about the
same time -- early to mid-July. For days on end, callers received a
recorded message telling them telephone volume was so heavy no one
could speak with them nor even take a message. They were advised to
call back another time.

The registration of firearms slowed to a crawl, too. According to
the registry's own numbers, it processed only 10,000 registrations
per week in mid-July, but was back up nearly to normal (40,000) by
mid-August.

Turmoil Seems Normal

Whether this incident was uniquely bad, or merely
catastrophe-as-usual, three things are clear about the registry as it
approaches its fourth anniversary and as the deadline (Jan. 1) for
registering all firearms approaches: It is in turmoil.

The Liberals have, for all intents and purposes, abandoned it.
And, the processing of owner licenses and firearms registrations has
become so perfunctory the registry cannot possibly make Canadians
safer from gun crime.

On Sept. 9, the Yellowknifer newspaper reported that the federal
firearms officers in both Yellowknife and Hay River had quit their
jobs. No replacements were being sought. These resignations follow
hard on the heals of resignations by firearms officers in Saskatoon,
Regina and Winnipeg. Since spring, eight in all have left their
posts.

Between now and the end of the year, the government must register
another 3.5 million firearms (assuming its own ridiculously low
estimate of the number of guns in Canada is correct). It cannot
possibly meet that target, particularly if its staff keep quitting
and its computers keep crashing. It has taken nearly two years to
register the first 4.2 million.

The entire registry staff continues to shrink in number, though.
The Liberals claim this is because the peak of the registry's

Paul Revere, Terrorist
by Ryan McMaken

The word "terrorist" is quickly headed down the same road that "racist" traveled down years ago. That is, the word is quickly becoming an all-purpose insult for anyone that the person doing the accusing happens to disagree with. Like "racist" or its variations like "anti-semite," "terrorist" is a term employed to cast a person in a light that discredits him in all matters and is thus unworthy of dialogue or consideration as anything other than as a symbol of pure evil.

In recent books and articles there has been a disturbing trend toward "terrorist revisionism." This is a phenomenon in which one takes a historical figure and anoints him with the new title of "terrorist" in an effort the prove the truly dastardly and sinister nature of that person. The new title reduces one to a caricature; a symbol of terrible things rather than as a truly historical figure that existed in a specific time and place and reacted to real historical events in specific ways. Terrorists, as understood by those who sling the title, are ahistorical "types" that occur here and there in history and wreak havoc upon a peaceful, righteous, and unsuspecting world. Supposedly, all was right with the world until the terrorists showed up and wrecked everything. It is also helpful to remember that in the history books, terrorists are never members of established governments. Government agents are always permitted to kill with impudence and maintain respectability. Those who must do with fewer resources must labor under the onus of being terrorists. Sixteen hundred years ago, Saint Augustine saw the inconsistency and recounted a tale about Alexander the Great and a captured pirate:

A fitting and true response was once given to Alexander the Great by an apprehended pirate. When asked by the king what he thought he was doing by infesting the sea, he replied with noble insolence, "What do you think you are doing by infesting the whole world? Because I do it with one puny boat, I am called a pirate; because you do it with a great fleet, you are called an emperor."

Augustine concluded, "what are governments but great bands of thieves?" Strangely however, the killing done by these great bands of thieves never earns any of their agents the title of terrorist. That honor is left to the small time thug; the pirate of Augustine’s tale.

Most recently exposed by the historians as a terrorist is Jesse James, the murderous bandit from Saint Joseph, Missouri who led the Younger gang on a crime spree across the United States until he was shot in the back by one of his own men. At one time in American history, James was a hero to many poor Southerners and denizens of Appalachia. One old ballad recounts that Jesse "robbed from the rich and gave to the poor" and that "Jesse had a wife/ she was a lady all her life/ his children they were brave." In the late 19th century, banks and railroads were seen as tools of government favoritism and corporate pork (which they were), and the fact that Jesse relieved these institutions of some of their money was not a problem for America’s poor, especially those who had experienced the desolation of the Civil War. In a review of T.J Stiles’ Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War reviewer Roger Miller pins on James the title "Terrorist for the South" in an indictment of not only James himself but also of the entire South for romanticizing the exploits of a terrorist. This is irresponsible scholarship. Jesse James was undoubtedly a violent criminal, and if I saw him coming down my street I’d gladly open fire, but to dismiss him as a terrorist simply ignores the fact that James learned his criminal behavior fighting in an illegal war that destroyed James’ community and it ignores the kind of resentment that government meddling in the railroads and banking industry produced among the citizenry of the time. It doesn’t take a PhD to understand why some of James’ countrymen wrote sympathetic ballads about him and cheered his robbery of those whom many Americans saw as beneficiaries of a corrupt political system.

Pancho Villa is another historical figure to be rechristened a terrorist in recent years. In recent articles and op-eds many writers and pundits have begun to draw comparisons between Villa and Osama bin Laden. Villa has apparently earned the title of terrorist for his 1916 raid on Columbus, New Mexico. Villa attacked civilians in Columbus as well as the garrison of 600 American soldiers stationed there in the early morning hours. A firefight ensued and resulted in Villa’s retreat with 100 Villistas and 17 Americans dead. Woodrow Wilson quickly sent Gen. John Pershing to invade Mexico (at least the third time the United States had invaded Mexican soil since 1846) to capture Villa.

Villa has been dismissed as a terrorist for his "unprovoked" attack on Americans, but it turned out that the

IN RADIO ADDRESS TO THE NATION
   The Oval Office

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week the American people sent a
clear message to Washington that we must put politics aside and
take real action on the real challenges facing are nation: saving
Social Security for the 21st century, passing a patients' bill of
rights, strengthening our schools by finishing the job of hiring
100,000 teachers and passing my plan to build or modernize 5,000
 schools across our country.

Over the past six years, we have taken real action to address
another important challenge: making our communities safe for our
families. For too long it seemed that rising crime was a
frightening fact of life in America. In too many communities
children could not play on the street or walk to school in safety,
older Americans locked themselves in their homes with fear, and
gangs armed with illegal guns boldly roamed our streets and
 schools.

I took office determined to change this, committed to a
comprehensive anti-crime strategy based on more community
policing, tougher penalties, and better prevention. Today our
strategy is showing remarkable results. We're ahead of schedule
and under budget in meeting our goal of putting 100,000 police on
the street. And all across America, crime rates have fallen to a
25-year low, respect for the law is on the rise, families are
beginning to feel safe in their communities again.

Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals has been at the center
of our strategy, and an essential part of our success. Since I
signed the Brady Law, after a big debate in Congress which was led
in the House of Representatives by now Senator-elect Charles
Schumer of New York, background checks have put a stop to nearly a
quarter of a million handgun purchases by fugitives or felons. Law
enforcement officers from around the country have told us that
fewer guns on the street have made a huge difference in the lives
 of families they serve.

At the end of this month, we will make the Brady Law even
stronger. For the first time ever, we will require background
checks for the purchase of any firearm, whether purchased from a
licensed gun deal or a pawn shop. But under this new Insta-Check
system, as it's called, we'll be able to run nearly twice as many
background checks, and most of them in just a matter of minutes.

We've spent five years working with state and local law
enforcement to put this system in place, but when it comes to our
families' safety, we must take another important step. Every year,
an untold number of firearms are bought and sold at an estimated
5,000 gun shows around our country. I come from a state where
these shows are very popular. I have visited and enjoyed them over
the years. They're often the first place parents teach their
children how to handle firearms safely. I know most gun dealers
and owners are dedicated to promoting safe and legal gun use.

Hola,

In response to June:
BTW, I am DEFINITELY no thumper and I am the last to push the Bible as inerring historical fact...but you, OTOH, are only presenting personal opinion that isn't supported by recent archeological discoveries and modern biblical-era scholarship...

I would beg to differ that I am representing personal opinion. I cite the work of Prof. Israel Finkelstein director of he Sonia and Marco Institute of Archeology at Tel Aviv University and Prof. Neil Silberman director of historical interpretation for the Ename Center for public Archeology and Heritage Presentation in Belgium and also a contributing editor of Archeology Magazine. I previously gave a starter book list (which I will add at the end) to get anyone searching for an understanding of early church history a source of reference works. It is by no means a complete list.
I have gone out of my way to try and not be opinionated and to try to find facts that adhere to my belief's (or lack of) as proofs of said beliefs. My conclusions are based on the evidences for and against historical accuracy of the bible. Ultimately any knowledge is questionable and a reasonable person with an open mind can still only be so certain.
As to recent archeological discoveries and biblical-era scholarship that refutes what I think I know, well lay it on me. The problem with most biblical scholarship is that it is done by believers. It is forbidden by many biblical study organizations to refute the findings of the bible. I am bound by no such shackles. Take for instance the interpretation of the Dead Sea Scrolls or the Qumran documents as they are known. Access to them was strictly controlled by a cabal of scholars with agenda's and it took a concentrated effort to get them released for study by independent researches. I thank Dr. Eisenman and others for their efforts there.
When you talk of biblical era scholars I need remind you that the church controlled knowledge and information and used it to wield power amongst the mostly illiterate. I am speaking of biblical scholarship from 350 to the mid 1800's. It was heresy to question the dogma and text's with severe punishment for those with open minds.
I have reviewed the available works of many, many church fathers from the first century onward and they are rife with false history, propagation of known lies and blatant forged documents and letters to support their positions.
The early Christian church was indeed a forgery mill. Letters from Jesus to neighboring kings, letters from Pontius Pilate, etc. In fact the sheer ridiculousness of some of these forgeries were an embarrassment to the church and it removed many previously canonized documents and letters.

And don't forget the Assyrian myths that were also borrowed...

I agree that the majority of the Bible is based on myths from earlier 'pagan' civilizations...but that doesn't mean that the myths don't contain an element of truth... ;-)

Exactly! That is what I am saying, mythos borrowed from mythos. Conquering tribes and nations incorporating the useful ideas and beliefs of the conquered and demonizing that which they did not like. The majority of original Saints of the Catholic church were Mithraic figures. They were, with sometimes subtle name changes, transformed into Christian concept figures to attract the illiterate Pagan's. That is the reason for the stained glass depiction of biblical scenes in churches. It was to give the Pagan's a visual stimulus to support their dogma. Of course there is some truths to the myths of old. The problem with the ancient ones are that the real events are so lost in time that unless new archeological finds of writings more ancient than the Sumerian and Babylonian tablets we probably will never be able to correlate them with available texts. So, let's say, "here are some old writings". "Here is a system of beliefs from an ancient people" Not take them at face value and start a cult of Gilgamesh or whatever.

For example, here in the U.S. we have a secular myth regarding George Washington chopping down a cherry tree as a boy and throwing a silver dollar across the Delaware River; while these myths are not objectively 'true', they DO contain subjective truths...and the fact that they are myths doesn't change the fact that George Washington WAS an actual person who DID have a significant impact on our history and culture...

Well, I am sure that the myths of Zeus had some basis in truths. I am sure they had a significant affect on the Greek people. I do not think that is proof of his existence.
In the future say there was a technological breakdown and long after people learned to read again. James Bond might seem like a real person that did wondrous things. However, they would be hard pressed to find writing of contemporaries of Bond, James Bond.
You see, with Christianity that is one of the main stumbling blocks to asserting his historocity. No one in that era ever wrote about him. They wrote about the Christian

Tom Clancy: Disinformation Artist
by STEVEN AFTERGOOD (fas.org)

Tom Clancy's 1984 novel "The Hunt for Red October" was once the unlikely vehicle for a deliberate U.S. Navy disinformation effort targeted at the Soviet Union.

According to Sherry Sontag's and Christopher Drew's 1998 book "Blind Man's Bluff," Clancy's novel about the search for a rogue Soviet submarine, which was first published by the U.S. Naval Institute, underwent prepublication review by the Navy.

Upon review, the Navy found "that about two-thirds of the technical information was on target and the rest was wrong, and that it typically overstated U.S. abilities," Sontag and Drew wrote.

But "rather than blocking publication of the book, or attempting to correct the misperceptions, when Clancy submitted his manuscript to the Navy for clearance, [CNO Admiral James D.] Watkins said he decided to let the book go forward as it was."

"'The Hunt for Red October' did us a service," Adm. Watkins told Sontag and Drew. "The Soviets kind of believed it, and we won the battle, and therefore it was a significant part of the noncostly deterrence of submarines." ("Blind Man's Bluff," page 322).

ARE AMERICANS THE VICTIMS OF A HOAX?

The time has come to stop using the flag as a blindfold, to stop waving our guns and our gods at each other, to take a close look at the facts which have emerged from the attacks on the World Trade Towers and to recognize the very real possibility, indeed probability, that We The People are the victims of a gigantic and deadly hoax.

In a normal terrorist event, the terrorists cannot wait to take credit, in order to link the violence to the socio-political intent of the terrorist organization. Yet the prime suspect in the New York Towers case, ex(?) CIA asset Osama Bin Laden (whose brother is one of George W. Bush's Texas business partners), has issued only two statements regarding the September 11th attacks, and both of those are denials of any involvement.

Huge problems are emerging in the official view of events. It's known that the United States was planning an invasion of Afghanistan long before the attacks on the World Trade Towers. Indeed the attacks on the World Trade Towers perfectly fit the timetable of an invasion by October stated by US officials just last summer.

The 19 names of suspected hijackers released by the FBI don't point to Afghanistan. They come from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates; all across the middle east without a focus in any one region. Indeed, even as the FBI was admitting that its list of 19 names was based solely on identifications thought to have been forged, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal insisted that an investigation in Saudi Arabia showed that the 5 Saudi men were not aboard the four jetliners that crashed in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania on September 11. "It was proved that five of the names included in the FBI list had nothing to do with what happened," Al-Faisal told the Arabic Press in Washington after meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush at the White House. A sixth identified hijacker is also reported to still be alive in Tunisia, while a 7th named man died two years ago!

In a recent development, the BBC is reporting that the transcript of a phone call made by Stewerdess Madeline Amy Sweeney to Boston air traffic controls shows that the stewerdess gave the seat numbers occupied byu the hijackers, seat numbers which were NOT the seats of the men the FBI claimed were responsible for the hijacking!

FBI Chief Robert Mueller admitted on September 20 and on September 27 that at this time the FBI has no legal proof to prove the true identities of the suicidal hijackers. Yet in the haste to move forward on the already planned war in Afghanistan, our government and the FBI (which does not have the best record for honesty in investigations to begin with, having been caught rigging lab tests, manufacturing testimony in the Vincent Foster affair, and illegally withholding/destroying evidence in the Oklahoma Bombing case) are not taking too close a look at evidence that points away from the designated suspect, ex(?) CIA asset Osama Bin Laden.

In particular, the FBI, too busy harassing political dissenters to find spies in its midst, the long rumored mole inside the White House, or plug leaks in high-tech flowing to foreign nations, has willfully and criminally ignored the implications of some vital pieces of information the FBI is itself waving around at the public.

We are being told that this crack team of terrorists, able to breeze past airport security as if it wasn't there, wound up leaving so much evidence in its wake that the bumbling Inspector Clouseau (or the FBI) could not fail to stumble over it. The locations where the terrorists supposedly stayed are so overloaded with damning materials that they resemble less a crimes scene, and more a "B" detective movie set, with vital clues always on prominent display for the cameras.

Yet another problem lies with the described actions of the hijackers themselves. We are being told on the one hand that these men were such fanatical devotees of their faith that they willingly crashed the jets they were flying into buildings. Yet on the other hand, we are being told that these same men spent the night before their planned visit to Allah drinking in strip bars, committing not just one, but two mortal sins which would keep them out of Paradise no matter what else they did. Truly devout Muslims would spend the day before a suicide attack fasting and praying. Not only does the drinking in strip bars not fit the profile of a fanatically religeous Muslim willing to die for his cause, but the witness reports of the men in the bars are of men going out of their way to be noticed and remembered, while waving around phony identifications.

Because of the facts of the phony identifications, we don't really know who was on those planes. What we do know is that the men on those planes went to a great deal of trouble to steal the identities of Muslims, and to make sure those identities were seen and remembered, then

The problem removing the US civilian from the casualty of war
equation. With severe attacks against US civilians it might
be wise to adopt a new policy in the middle East.
Israel and the PLO are at war. I suggest moving Israel to the
United States. Thus Jews could worship as they want without
harassment by angry Palestinians. There would be not bias in
policy as Israel became a State of the United States within
North American borders.

Jewish Immigration to the United States would not be
blocked as it was during WW2, but an open door policy,
in true spirit of the United States as a safe haven country for
religious freedom free from political prosecution.
The same policy Israel maintains could be applied to the Israel
within the US

A diplomatic relationship, with the Palestinians would allow
cordial religious visits to the holy land where religious pilgrims
from all faiths would be welcome as opposed to desecration of it
with warfare and bloodshed. Voluntary Protection of religious
persons by persons of other faiths would be ideal. Railages Guests.

A military base in the Mid east could be established.
An International corporate Army financed directly by Oil companies.
As opposed to Tax revenues via oil commerce as justification for
military involvement. Oil companies from England and the United States
coalition members could establish a base in the middle East specifically
to protect that Industry, Oil companies could in turn be given large tax
breaks to accomplish Independent military Financing of a security force.

Other Military bases could include Rain Forest protection. All surviving
rain frosts could be protected by an International/UN/Amercian/NATO

A military perimeter could be established to do so the failing drug war could

COLUMN: Boy, do they ever want Trails End Ranch
Boy, do they ever want Trails End Ranch

The Donald Scott case isn't as well known as the government atrocities at
Waco and Ruby Ridge. But it should be.

In October of 1992, millionaire recluse Donald Scott and his bride of two
months, Frances Plante Scott, lived in a storybook wooded valley in the
mountains high above Malibu, Calif. Trails End Ranch is almost completely
surrounded by state and federal park land, and the neighboring government
entities had made numerous attempts to buy out Scott and annex his property.

Frances Scott contends the National Security Agency and NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratories have also had a less-well-known role in the attempted government
land grab -- the ranch sits in the midst of a government antenna array,
perfectly sited to receive data from the Pacific Missile Test Range, and, My
husband was the only local resident to testify against the placement of those
antennas.

Stymied in their attempt to buy the Scott ranch, government officials hit on
an alternative plan. Contending an officer had seen marijuana plants growing
under the trees during a drug-seeking overflight, agents from various
jurisdictions gathered quietly outside the locked gate to the ranch in the
morning mists of Oct. 2, 1992. After greedily studying the maps of the 200
acres of prime land they were told they'd be able to grab under federal asset
seizure laws should they find as few as 14 marijuana plants, they cut the
chain on the gate with bolt-cutters and raced a mile up the dirt drive to the
ranch, complete with police dogs.

Frances Scott was in the kitchen, brewing her morning coffee, when dozens of
men in plainclothes and brandishing guns -- no badges or warrants in evidence
-- came swarming in. Understandably, she screamed for her husband, still
asleep upstairs.

Donald Scott, 63, came hurrying down the stairs, a handgun held over his
head. The officers shouted for him to lower his weapon. He did. They shot him
dead.

Frances Scott contends the photograph of two plainclothes cops displayed at
her web site, www.savetrailsend.org, was taken mere minutes after her
husband's death. The two officers wear grins of triumph.

Ventura County District Attorney Michael Bradbury, after a six-month
investigation, concluded a voluminous report
(www.savetrailsend.org/report.shtml) by branding the fatal raid a land grab
by the [L.A.] Sheriffs Office. He confirms the odd fact that Two
researchers from Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) in Pasadena were also
present for the so-called drug raid, and asks in his conclusion, Did the Los
Angeles County Sheriff obtain the warrant in order to obtain Scott's land?
Did the National Park Service orchestrate the investigation or killing in
order to obtain the land?

Not a single marijuana seed or stem was ever found: All they had to show for
their trouble was this body on the living room floor, reported the Los
Angeles Times.

The multiple government agencies settled a wrongful death suit for $5
million.

One would think that would leave Trails End Ranch securely in the hands of
the widow Scott, who has made it her life's work to see the government never
gets the property. But if one assumed that, one would not be properly
accounting for the creativity and plain, cussed persistence of today's
government land thieves.

A year after the raid and shooting, the widow Scott had to stand alongside 15
local firefighters and watch as the main house, cabins and other outbuildings
of Trail's End Ranch burned to the ground. She says a county firefighter told
her with tears in his eyes that a National Parks spokesman denied the firemen
permission to dig a firebreak, since, It violates our rules to disturb the
natural beauty of the land.

Many would have expected Mrs. Scott to depart after being burned out of house
and home. Instead, she's spent the past six years camped out on the property
in a teepee. Mrs. Scott's current problem? The ranch went to Donald Scott's
estate, of which she controls only a minority share, the rest going to his
children by a previous marriage. The IRS appraises the ranch at $2.4 million,
and wants inheritance tax on $1 million of that sum, at 55 percent.

The attorneys for the children have advised them the ranch would be hard to
market -- the official appraisal describes it as inaccessible, though Mrs.
Scott says the mile-long access road is still perfectly functional -- and
that they'll be better off selling the property to pay the taxes.

Thus, on Aug. 2, a police SWAT team accompanied by two helicopters arrived to
evict Mrs. Scott.

Out of the $5 million wrongful death settlement, 40 percent went to the

Mobile phones may foil stealth bombers

By Robert Uhlig in London America's multi-billion-dollar stealth bombers
could be rendered obsolete by a British invention that uses existing mobile
telephone masts to detect and track aircraft that were previously invisible
to radar.
US stealth fighters and bombers such as the F117, B1 and B2 played key roles
in the Gulf and Kosovan wars as they are almost impossible to detect using
conventional radar.
However, the ease with which the mobile telephone mast system - developed at
a laboratory in Hampshire - can be used to detect the aircraft has greatly
concerned the military.
Mr Peter Lloyd, the head of projects at Roke Manor Research, said: "I cannot
comment in detail because it is a classified matter, but let's say the US
military is very interested."
Stealth aircraft, each of which costs at least $A3.6 billion, are shaped to
confuse radar. A special paint absorbs radio waves, reducing the radar
signature to the equivalent of a gull in flight.
The Roke Manor scientists discovered that telephone calls sent between mobile
phone masts detected the precise position of stealth aircraft with ease. "We
use just the normal phone calls that are flying about in the ether," Mr Lloyd
said. "The front of the stealth plane cannot be detected by conventional
radar, but its bottom surface reflects very well."
Mobile telephone calls bouncing between base stations produce a screen of
radiation. When the aircraft fly through this screen they disrupt the phase
pattern of the signals. The Roke Manor system uses receivers, shaped like
television aerials, to detect distortions in the signals.
A network of aerials large enough to cover a battlefield can be packed in a
Land Rover.
Using a laptop connected to the receiver network, soldiers on the ground can
calculate the position of stealth aircraft with an accuracy of 10 metres with
the aid of the GPS satellite navigation system.
"It's remarkable that a stealth system that cost £60 billion [$158 billion]
to develop is beaten by £100,000 mobile phone technology," Mr Lloyd said.
"It's almost impossible to disable a mobile phone network without bombing an
entire country, whereas radar installations are often knocked out of action
with a single bomb or missile."

Demeaned and Victimized
Indians Say Sports Mascots, Ads Create Subhuman Image

By Dean Schabner

March 20 - Would you buy Martin Luther King Malt Liquor, go to the Mahatma
Gandhi Strip Club or wear Jesus Christ Jeans?

If any of these make you uncomfortable, you might have an inkling of how
Lakota Sioux, and American Indians in general, respond to the use of the
name Crazy Horse to market everything from jeans to strip clubs.
American Indian activists see a connection between the use of the name of a
man considered a spiritual leader and the acceptance of Indian-related
nicknames and mascots for sports teams, which they say range from the simply
demeaning to the sacrilegious and together keep American Indians from being
considered on a level with other ethnic groups.

"[The use of such images] reinforces all of the stereotypical conceptions of
native people so prevalent in the American consciousness, effectively
reducing the fullness of our humanity to a unidimensional farce," Joe Gone,
a psychologist and member of the Gros Ventre tribe said in an interview with
the American Psychological Association Monitor.

The fact that these mascots and advertising images exist, according to Gary
Brouse of the Interfaith Council on Corporate Responsibility, is evidence
that American Indians have been left out of the mix as America has become
more conscious of the rights of minorities.

Problems of Perception

A figure of a black, a Jew or Latino comparable to the Cleveland Indians'
Chief Wahoo mascot would not be tolerated by society, just as the use of the
name of a person of another race who was as revered as Crazy Horse is by
American Indians to advertise an alcoholic beverage or strip club would be
met by outrage, Brouse said.

"Crazy Horse was a very sacred leader," he said. "He is mostly known in
non-Indian Country as a military leader. In Indian Country, he is a
religious leader."

Though associating the name with a clothing line, as Liz Claiborne Inc. does
with its Crazy Horse brand, would seem less offensive to Indians than some
of the other ways it has been used, the company's ads featuring skinny
models casting languid looks at the camera are hardly harmonious with what
Crazy Horse represents to Indians.

"He's a cultural hero," said Wilmer Mesteth, a Lakota tribal leader. "He was
something like Martin Luther King or [Nelson] Mandela. Fighting for the
rights of his people, and he gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life."

The company issued a statement last week in response to a request for an
interview that said: "We oppose products that reinforce negative stereotypes
about Native Americans or any other ethnic, racial or cultural group.
Moreover, we have never used Native American imagery or iconography, and we
never will."

Liz Claiborne "intends no disrespect to any member of the Native American
community," the statement said. "Although the issue has yet to be resolved,
we understand the views that are being expressed and we remain hopeful that
we will eventually reach a mutually acceptable agreement."

Taking the Sacred, Making It Silly

The Lakota's long running battle to get companies to stop using the name
Crazy Horse to market products is just one aspect of American Indians'
struggle to redefine themselves in the eyes of non-Indians.

"I think that part of it is that America needs to be educated," Mesteth
said. "We're alive and well and still struggling. We're struggling against
great odds to maintain our lives."

That effort includes the annual appeals to professional sports teams like
the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and football Washington Redskins and
Kansas City Chiefs to rethink their nicknames and mascots. The insults
presented by these names and figures goes beyond the caricature. Just the
name Redskin is considered by many American Indians to be a term as
insulting as words referring to other ethnic groups that are unprintable.

Many of the objects commonly waved around by team mascots, such as staffs
decorated with eagle feathers or "peace pipes," and the long trailing
feathered headdresses they often wear are sacred objects to various tribes.
It's as though they were waving crucifixes or Torah scrolls to spur on their
fans.

"It says, 'Your religion is not as important as mine,'" Brouse said. "Why
can't we carry our understanding of what is offensive and prejudicial over
to other groups? Why can't we understand what is offensive to others?

"I know [New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani] has been very upset and very
vocal about museum displays using the Virgin Mary. This is even worse," he
added, referring to two Brooklyn Museum of Art shows that featured work that
Giuliani considered insulting to Catholics.

Numerous universities, colleges and schools have responded to Indians'
requests to get rid of their Indian-related nicknames and mascots. Some
schools - such as the universities of Wisconsin and Iowa - have gone so far
as to schedule no games against

World's biggest oil rig tilts into sea after blast

By Luiz Andre Ferreira

MACAE, Brazil, March 16 (Reuters) - The world's biggest offshore oil rig,
owned by Brazil's state oil giant Petrobras, threatened to sink into the
ocean spilling crude oil on Friday, a day after an explosion that apparently
killed 10 people.

Three powerful blasts rocked the 40-story rig off the coast of Rio de Janeiro
state on Thursday, causing a fire that killed at least one of the 175 workers
aboard.

Nine workers were listed as missing, and Petrobras said on Thursday that
there was little chance they had survived. Another worker was hospitalized
with severe burns.

On Friday, public outrage mounted against accident-prone Petrobras as its
biggest platform tilted into the sea. If the rig sinks it could dump crude
and diesel into the open ocean, causing yet another environmental disaster.

Tense families of the workers also waited to see if the official death toll
would rise when search and rescue operations resume later in the day.

"Petrobras is much more worried about cutting costs than ensuring the safety
of its workers and of the environment," said Jandira Segalli, a federal
deputy who met with officials after the explosion.

Union leaders called a nationwide protest on Friday to demand safer working
conditions. They accused Petrobras of outsourcing work to inexperienced
workers in order to cut costs, thus putting its employees at risk.

More than 80 oil workers have died in accidents over the last three years,
according to the United Oil Workers Federation (FUP).

It was still not clear what caused the blasts at the platform, located in the
Roncador oil field 78 miles (125 km) offshore in the Campos Basin, where 80
percent of Brazil's oil is produced.

But damage to one of the rig's hulls threatened to send the rig sinking into
the ocean.

"If the degree of listing increases we are going to lose the platform,"
Petrobras President Henri Philippe Reichstul said in a videoconference on
Thursday. "It will only be clear by tomorrow (Friday) morning."

The immense structure was listing three times more than the Leaning Tower of
Pisa, according to engineers, and appeared on the verge of lurching into the
sea. If it did, at least half of the 1,200 cubic meters of diesel and 300
cubic meters of crude stored on the rig could spill.

Five boats are standing by to collect the oil, but they can only hold half of
the total amount stored there.

The P-36 rig can produce up to 180,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making
it the world's biggest platform, but after starting operations last year, it
was only pumping out 80,000 bpd, or 5 percent of Brazil's total daily output.

All production was halted and Petrobras said it could lose $50 million a
month with the rig out of operation.

Petrobras' stock sank 6.8 percent and Brazil's currency weakened on Thursday
on investor concerns that Petrobras will have to make up for lost production
with more costly imports.

Petrobras has also caused a string of high-profile environmental disasters in
recent years.

Well, LOL, Bill, you are very funny with this claim!
Jesse's suits cannot be touched at $400 but are more in the
$1-2,000 range and those tailor-made white shirts that are
so attractive are about $100 apiece and the constant limo
service--just hiding it from the press must cost a fortune.
I'd guess he gets his money from extortion of sorts--from
blacks for validating their victim cards and from whites for
threatening to riot or outright blackmail. As in the case
of Ron brown--Jesse was demanding a "full investigation"
then he started to back-peddle. A deal is struck and viola!
It would be WRONG to investigate the death further. etc. He
constantly threatens businesses with discrimination suits,
marches, boycotts, etc. until sub rosa deals are made and
the company decides to "reform" and hire more minorities
(and Jesse is paid under the table). I hope this serves as
a wake-up call for those this man has duped for years. At
least the monetary amounts admitted as being paid to the
mistress should give some pause (except poor Bill who truly
believes).

In the 1950-70 era, there was communist money poured into
both sides of the Civil Rights movement. No, save time--I
do not have an Internet URL for that. It is my opinion
based on what I was told from a number of sources at the
time. They neglected to form web pages with URL's for those
whose world consist of only such. Anyway, if it were not
the consensus that the old Soviet commies are broke I would
wonder if they are at it again as David Duke has been in
Moscow since November (unless he has returned very
recently--he does not keep me advised of his schedule)
supposedly promoting that wretched book of his that only
sold 5,000 copies total in the U.S.
Now why would Ruskies be interested in such when nobody here
was. I have 5,000 relatives who would buy a book so it was
a dismal failure. But could they be courting both sides
once again? I do not know.

So how much is it worth for Jesse to shut up about Ron Brown
and who pays things like that? I guess people with
something to hide and also businesses who do not want to be
labeled as racists when they are not and put out of
business. He is after all operating out of Chicago which
explains why Bill defends all this as "speaking engagements"
and nobody else who works for CNN dresses like that and has
limo service. Who was that young reporter killed driving
home a year or so ago--no limo for him and he was much
bigger on CNN than Jesse. Charles somebody. It is awful to
get old and forgetful.

The fact that Jesse is tax-exempt makes this sort of
information of interest to the public. And while we are on
the subject, can anybody tell me when and where MLK earned a
doctorate degree? Jesse survived the fraud of smearing
blood, probably his own, on his shirt and pretending he held
MLK as he lay dying when he did no such thing. He WAS there
and that was it. Maybe we were all too kind to have chalked
this up to youthful indiscretion and should have watched
Jesse a little more closely throughout the years.

-Caveat Lector-

When I was young I put together a Ph.D for aF man who was a Professor at
Patterson State Teachers .now when he asked me if I would type it up
for him, little did I know what he wanted.

He had read my manuscript, was over 40, and just could not sit down long
enough to do anything...so late one night he was at my door, and I
expected to be typing in a sense, a manuscript.

No his dissertation was on Thermal Nuclear Pollution which involved
everything from fish kills to - well the usual routine, and it was then
I discovered all these books, I was to pick out information and put it
all in a story form for him.bibliographies and all..

Now of all the stuff I put into type for him, on my own - I said you
mean to get a Ph.D you use other peoples work - but I did not say
anything more and he did not answer.

So, I put all that crap together for him, but this was 1969 and I
remember it was summer; and in his one book there was mention however
something of which I was well informed - it mentioned pesticides in
streams also causing fish kills, etc.and I, on my own put one
original line, in that piece of professional plagiarism.I wrote
"pesticides have also been known to kill people",.

Now I handed him a piece of work that was perfection, for at the time I
was good and fast typist - and that seemed to be his problem - he was
so scatter brained he could not sit down long enough, to do
anything.and boy later this turned out to be profitable business for
he had read my manuscript and it gave him the idea to get me to do his
work for him.

Well, later I said "hey, how was my work'.for they were laughing
about something I had done.

He said "where the hell did you get that line pestacides also have been
known to kill people".I said, well it seemed to fit in with what I
thought - for I had done research into this and I knew of an old man on
a hot day, who was our Clerk Treasurer, who was spraying pesticides in
his garden and he dropped dead - plus I mentioned the airplane glue
where I had also raised holy hell, and my reporter friend and I both
received threats re this - for they were going to sue us.Testor
Corp, etc.no longer used banana oil used Toluene - used also in dry
leaning - and it also caused cataracts if used with steam heat I
discovered.

Nobody gives a damn, but of all the work I had put in putting this thing
together, the only comment made by the professor was 'where did you get
this"..and he said Oh I think I got it in

So it occurred to me - al Ph.D's - do they plagiarize other people's
work - don't they have anything original? I asked in all sincerity,
and he said he wasn't going for a Nobel Peace Award or a Pulitzer - all
he wanted was he Ph.D, and I am happy to say I helped him get it.

And after all that work, all I can say is this - the most important line
in that whole piece was my one original thought - pesticides have been
known to kill people - very positive statement

So how could King steal anything from someone else's work when doing
Ph.D.

Everything that guy said that is recorded was plagiarized...Let Freedom
Ring - line out of the bible..Free At Last, Free at Last from old
hymn.I have a dream, sounds like Deuteronomy..for this man
identified with God and God has been plagarized from F. Scott Fitzgerald
to the one who wrote How Do I love thee - (Fitzgerald's Tender Is he
Night"
It was the best of times and the worst of times right out of the bible
in Kings, as I recall.

Now nobody has sued over this, and I think now even Jerry Falwell has a
bible copyrighted and he even changes meanings of names - for instance
MNASON no longer means, diligent seeker of truth.

To me, they are all a bunch of bums.here I was doing PHD work, and
he gets the Ph.D.

What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation.

Is it like a Mutual Admiration Society? Now I know Ph.D's are supposed
to be a little smarter than others but then I also know a moron who came
out of Morehouse College, a lawyer, who could ot spell and was so half
witted he could not put a simple complaint together, which is routine
material without handwriting it ..I did work for him when I worked
in the AG's office.but he was a nice guy - spent a lot of time
chasing women - but then he, was not married.

So things just are not as they seemfor simple solution see Wizard of
Oz.how the Scarecrow got his brain, how the Tin Man got his heart
and how the cowardly lion, got up his courage.now like Clinton and
Gore, they did get stuck in poppy fields much too long - but when they
reach OZ, the great wizard, who passed out all the awards - was the
biggest dumb head of all.

I rest my case - from that day on I realized that anyone who went into a
university came out no smarter than he went in - he just is on his own,
can cheat his way through often without getting caught - and when I went
to College it was rather

The military get mightier

Is this the shape of GIs to come?

By BBC News Online's Mark Ward
The US military is planning to turn soldiers into supermen by fitting them
with powered exoskeletons.

The research arm of the US military is spending $50m to develop new
technologies that will improve the speed, strength and endurance of soldiers.

The research programme is aiming to give soldiers better protection against
enemy fire, the ability to tote bigger guns, run faster, communicate better
and help them avoid friendly fire.

The first trials of the technology are expected within the decade.

Power play

This month, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) is
expected to sign contracts to kick off the project to develop powered
exoskeletons for its ground troops.

The contract signings follow a year of meetings and assessments run by Darpa
to find the most promising technologies.

So far, Darpa, the main research and development organisation for the US
Department of Defense, has not said which ideas it favours, but it has set
out the broad goals of the programme which calls for technologies that can
help troops:

carry heavier packs;
march faster over longer distances;
lift heavier objects and use larger weapons;
leap extraordinary heights and/or distances.
Dr Ephrahim Garcia, co-ordinator of the exoskeleton project, said its demands
were "formidable" and much of the initial research was speculative to prove
concepts rather than develop finished products.

"The controls, the power requirements, the human interface to the machine are
all things that we do not know if we can do yet," he said. "There is a huge
challenge here."

He added that the exoskeletons must be something that troops can wear and use
without thinking rather than something they have to operate.

Suited up

The powered suits will help soldiers carry and use larger weapons and to take
heavier loads into battle. Currently, soldiers carry a pack that is no more
than a third of their body weight and usually take far less into combat.

Field trials have shown that troops typically dump anything too bulky or
heavy to carry for long distances.

The exoskeletons will also have to be almost silent to operate and use fuel
very efficiently. And soldiers must be able to use them for at least 24 hours
before needing to refuel.

Early work sponsored by Darpa has used pneumatic muscles or deformable
magnets to power artificial limbs or suits that soldiers could wear. Trials
of a Springwalker system helped its developers travel at speeds in excess of
24 km/h (15 mph).

Stuck in the mud

The exoskeletons are expected to include a sensor web that expands a
soldier's field of vision, passes on information about battlefield
conditions, using GPS or thermal cameras, helps to co-ordinate groups of
other soldiers and lessens the chance of being hit by friendly fire.

Conducting fabrics could be used to swap data between sensors, and wireless
networks could pass information between squads or soldiers.

The suits could also act as body armour or have physiological monitoring
systems that let officers know the health of the troops under their command.

Field trials of mock-ups of future systems on soldiers running a
cross-country course revealed the limitations of some approaches.

Visors on helmets that could double as screens got in the way of rifle sights
or made the headgear bulky and unstable. Other sensors or power packs
distributed around the body of a soldier got in the way when combatants were
crawling and made it harder for them to hide.

Dengue Fever Hits in Latin America

By WILL WEISSERT
Associated Press Writer

Dengue fever patient
Associated Press/Luis Romero [18K]
--

--

COATEPEQUE, Guatemala (AP) — Maria Oloxon thought her son Cristian was out of
the woods.

The 5-year-old's fever was all but gone, his wiry black hair no longer
dripped with sweat and there was no trace of the crippling muscle pains that
had left his tan body riving in agony for eight days.

But then the blood began to run from his nose, ooze from his lips and trickle
out of his throat.

``We were noting that his color was much better and saying that he could go
outside and play with his cousins,'' said Oloxon, a 33-year-old mother of
five. ``Then we were screaming and praying, 'Please God, save our little
one.'''

Cristian, who was rushed to the hospital and eventually made a full recovery,
had been stricken with a potentially fatal form of dengue fever — a painful,
mosquito-borne virus characterized by headaches, rashes, cramps and severe
back and bone pain.

Most dengue sufferers recover after about a week, but those stricken with the
disease's hemorrhagic variety begin to bleed internally just when it appears
they have recovered. The victims can die within a few days if they are not
hospitalized.

Hemorrhagic dengue, which usually strikes children and the elderly because of
their weak immune systems, has killed at least 70 people in Latin America
this year.

There is no cure for dengue and medical experts aren't sure how the
hemorrhagic virus is structurally different from dengue's nonfatal forms.
Still, doctors can save those stricken with hemorrhagic dengue by treating
its symptoms and replenishing the blood and plasma lost to internal bleeding
— if the patients receive treatment in time.

Mosquito fumigation
Associated Press/Moises Castillo [25K]
--

--

A global pandemic of dengue began in Southeast Asia after World War II and
began intensifying in 1982, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.

It is not as aggressive as other highly contagious viruses such as Ebola, but
is instead carried by mosquitoes born in the standing water found in ponds,
outdoor sinks, flower pots or garbage piles located behind many homes in
Central and South America.

Houses without air conditioning, whose screen-less windows are almost always
left open to combat stifling heat, become easy targets for the insects, which
feed at night when homes are teeming with family members.

``One infected person can infect an entire neighborhood,'' said Jorge Arias,
Latin American adviser on communicable diseases for the Washington-based Pan
American Health Organization. ``Once a mosquito bites someone with dengue, it
becomes very easy for that mosquito to give it to dozens of others.''

Arias said dengue in all its forms is not a problem in the United States
because of the air conditioners and window screens found in most homes there.
Americans are also not as likely to have standing water close to open windows
as people living in Latin America, he said.

But in El Salvador, doctors have seen more than 330 new cases of hemorrhagic
dengue since October, when the government declared a nationwide state of
emergency.

In 11 months this year, 35 people have died from complications related to
hemorrhagic dengue, Health Minister Jose Lopez Beltran said. That number was
expected to exceed 45 by the end of the year, he said.

A contingent of dengue experts from the United States and around the world
have since arrived to treat and observe more than 3,000 patients suffering
from both potentially fatal and non-deadly forms of dengue.

While the disease is not directly contagious, a 24-year-old Cuban medical
volunteer who traveled to San Salvador to help treat dengue patients died
Oct. 11 after being bitten by a mosquito in a crowded public hospital.

Dengue has also killed 10 people in Honduras so far this year and doctors
were watching hundreds of patients believed to be suffering from the fatal
form of dengue, health ministry officials reported.

According to Arias, complications caused by dengue fever have also killed
seven people in the Dominican Republic, four in Venezuela and claimed three
victims in Nicaragua and Brazil.

``The trend is that things will get worse unless definite action is taken,''
Arias said.

Eight Guatemalans have died from the effects of dengue — six of whom were
children who hailed from this sweltering and scruffy town of 200,000 people
located 130 miles west of Guatemala City.

``We are on red alert,'' said Saul Orlando Martinez, head of Coatepeque's
national hospital. ``We can treat patients who come in with internal
bleeding, but we don't know how many

New Intel Breakthrough Promises a Superfast Chip for the Future %) AP Photo

The Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Intel Corp., the world's largest manufacturer of
computer chips, says it has built the world's smallest and fastest transistor
- a milestone that will allow the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company to build
within the next five or 10 years microprocessors that will be 10 times more
powerful than the ones available today.
Intel officials plan to share details of the breakthrough Monday in San
Francisco at the International Electron Devices Meeting, a technical
conference for semiconductor engineers and scientists.

Chips, which are the brains of computers, contain transistors that act like
switches controlling the flow of data. The smaller the transistors, the
faster the chips can perform.

Today's fastest chip on the market, Intel's Pentium 4, squeezes 42 million
transistors onto a sliver of silicon. With the latest tiny transistors,
future chips could have 400 million or more transistors. The new transistors,
Intel said, are .03 microns wide, or about three atoms thick. A pile of
100,000 of them would equal the thickness of a sheet of paper, the company
said.

"Semiconductors have been on this growth curve for a long time, and Intel has
validated that we'll be able to continue on this path," said Jim Handy, a
chief analyst with Dataquest.

Other semiconductor manufacturers, such as IBM Corp. and Advanced Micro
Devices, Inc., have all been locked in a race with Intel to create faster,
smaller chips.

For the moment, Intel is holding the crown.

X DRUDGE REPORT X SUN NOV 19, 2000 19:31:42 ET X

RELEASED: DEMOCRAT MEMO ON HOW TO DISQUALIFY MILITARY VOTES

**World Exclusive**

The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained -- and is now releasing worldwide -- a memo circulated to Democrats throughout Florida detailing how to disqualify overseas military ballots!

MORE

It's been talked about. It's been flashed on TV. But now only the DRUDGE REPORT can bring you the full text.

Mark Herron, a Tallahassee lawyer helping shepherd Democratic presidential election lawsuits through the local courts, sent the five-page letter to Democratic attorneys across Florida giving them tips on how to lodge protests against the ballots which heavily favored Republican George W. Bush.

Bush comfortably won Florida's overseas absentee vote by 1,380 votes to Vice-President Al Gore's 750 but, after vigorous challenges by Gore canvassers, 1,527 of the postal ballots, many of them from soldiers and sailors on active service, were rejected using Herron's bluprint.

Gen Norman Schwarzkopf led Republican condemnation of a five-page guide which advised Democratic tellers how to raise objections to the postal votes.

He said: "It is a very sad day in our country when the men and women of the armed forces are serving abroad and facing danger of a daily basis . . . and are denied the right to vote for the president of the United States who will be their commander in chief."

The 5-page memo as obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT:

Date: November 15, 2000
To: FDP Lawyer
From: Mark Herron
Subject: Overseas Absentee Ballot Review and Protest

State and Federal law provides for the counting of "absentee qualified electors overseas" ballots for 10 days after the day of the election or until November 17, 2000. Sections 101.62(7)(a), Florida Statutes defines as "absentee qualified elector overseas" to mean members of the Armed Forces while in the service, members of the merchant marine of the United States and other citizens of the United States, who are permanent residents of the states and are temporarily residing outside of the territories of the United States and the Districts of Columbia. These "absent qualified electors overseas" must also be qualified and registered as provided by law.

You are being asked to review these overseas absentee ballots to make a determination whether acceptance by the supervisor of elections and/or the county canvassing board is legal under Florida law. A challenge to these ballots must be made prior to the time that the ballot is removed from the mailing envelope. The specific statutory requirement for processing the canvass of an absentee ballot including of overseas absentee ballot, are set forth in Section 101.62(2) (c)2. Florida Statutes:

If any elector or candidate present believes that an absentee ballot is illegal due to a defect apparent on the voter's certificate, he or she may at anytime before the ballot is removed from the envelope, file with the canvassing board a protest against the canvass of the ballot specifying the precinct, the ballot, and the reason he or she believes the ballot to be illegal. A challenge based upon a defect in the voterÕs certificate may not be accepted after the ballot has been removed from the mailing envelope.

The form of the voter's certificates on the absentee ballot is set forth in section 101.64(1), Florida Statutes. By statutory provisions, only overseas absentee ballots mailed with an APO, PPO, or foreign postmark shall be considered a ballot. See Section 101.62(7)(c). Florida Statutes.

In reviewing these ballots you should focus on the following:

1. Request for overseas ballots: Determine that the voter affirmatively requested an overseas ballot, and that the signature on the request for an overseas ballot matches the signature of the elector on the registration books to determine that the elector who requested the overseas ballot is the elector registered. See Section 101.62(4)(a), Florida Statutes.

2. The voter's signature: The ballot envelope must be signed by the voter. The signature of the elector as the voter's certificate should be compared with the signature of the elector of the signature on the registration books to determine that the elector who voted by ballot is the elector registered. See Section 101.68(c)x, Florida Statutes.

3. The ballot is properly witnessed: The absentee ballot envelope must be witnessed by a notary or an attesting witness over the age of eighteen years. You may note that these requirements vary from the statutory language from the Section 101.68(2)(c)1, Florida Statutes. Certain statutory requirements in that section were not proclaimed by the Justice Department pursuant to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, Sec. DE 98-13.

4. The ballot is postmarked: With respect to absentee ballots mailed by absolute qualified electors overseas only those ballots mailed with an APO, PPO, or foreign postmark shall be considered valid. See Section

The BBC's David Whitehouse
"A prehistoric planetarium on which man first charted the stars"
 real 28k

Ice Age star map discovered

The star map gives insight into our ancestors' minds

By BBC News Online science editor Dr David Whitehouse
A prehistoric map of the night sky has been discovered on the walls of the
famous painted caves at Lascaux in central France.

It is a map of the prehistoric cosmos

Dr Michael Rappenglueck
The map, which is thought to date back 16,500 years, shows three bright
stars known today as the Summer Triangle.

A map of the Pleiades star cluster has also been found among the Lascaux
frescoes.

And another pattern of stars, drawn 14,000 years ago, has been identified in
a cave in Spain.

According to German researcher Dr Michael Rappenglueck, of the University of
Munich, the maps show that our ancestors were more sophisticated than many
believe.

Scientific heritage

The Lascaux caves, with their spectacular drawings of bulls, horses and
antelope, were painted 16,500 years ago.

The caves may have been a prehistoric planetarium where the stars were first
charted

Discovered in 1940, the walls show the artistic talents of our distant
ancestors. But the drawings may also demonstrate their scientific knowledge
as well.

The caves could be a prehistoric planetarium in which humanity first charted
the stars.

The sky map has been found in a region of the Lascaux caves known as the
Shaft of the Dead Man.

Painted on to the wall of the shaft is a bull, a strange bird-man and a
mysterious bird on a stick.

Summer triangle

According to Dr Rappenglueck, these outlines form a map of the sky with the
eyes of the bull, birdman and bird representing the three prominent stars
Vega, Deneb and Altair.

The ancient star map shows a bull, birdman and a bird on a stick

Together, these stars are popularly known as the Summer Triangle and are
among the brightest objects that can be picked out high overhead during the
middle months of the northern summer.

Around 17,000 years ago, this region of sky would never have set below the
horizon and would have been especially prominent at the start of spring.

"It is a map of the prehistoric cosmos," Dr Rappenglueck told BBC News
Online. "It was their sky, full of animals and spirit guides."

Seven sisters

But the sky map is not the only evidence that prehistoric man took a keen
interest in the night sky. Nearer to the entrance of the Lascaux cave complex
is a magnificent painting of a bull.

Cave drawings in Spain may also point to the stars

Hanging over its shoulder is what appears to be a map of the Pleiades, the
cluster of stars sometimes called the Seven Sisters.

Inside the bull painting, there are also indications of spots that may be a
representation of other stars found in that region of sky.

Today, this region forms part of the constellation of Taurus the bull,
showing that mankind's identification of this part of the sky stretches back
thousands of years.

Northern Crown

Dr Rappenglueck has also identified a star map painted on the walls of a cave
in Spain 14,000 years ago.

The Cueva di El Castillo cave, in the mountains of Pico del Castillo,
contains a region called the Frieze of Hands.

At the end of this remarkable section can be found a curved pattern of dots.

"Nobody paid much attention to it," said Dr Rappenglueck. "But, it is
obviously a drawing of the constellation we call the Northern Crown. It is
remarkable."

The archaeologists who have looked at Dr Rappengleuck's conclusions have so
far agreed that they are reasonable and that he may have uncovered the
earliest evidence of humanity's interest in the stars.

Peace at any cost is a prelude to war!

--
--
 U.N.'s shaky foundation
By Alan Keyes

--
--

Republican Party elites who have worked so hard to nominate George W. Bush
tend to be uncomfortable with the conservative agenda of defending American
sovereignty. Is this charge unfair? Certainly it is the Democrats who are
most eager to blur the line between the nation and the world. But Republican
support for such internationalist briar patches as the Kosovo intervention
and the World Trade Organization reveals a deep confusion about American
sovereignty and why it matters. As Republican "strategists" plot their autumn
"gotcha's" for Al Gore, they seem oblivious to the fact that an entire core
Republican constituency may walk away from the Republican ticket, unless that
ticket takes a clear stand on the sovereignty issue. The Republican
leadership needs to understand why concern over the issue is so high, and I'd
like to explain it to them.
The center of internationalism, of course, is the United Nations. So if we
are to understand what is wrong with internationalism, we need to understand
clearly what the United Nations represents. To be fair, we should begin by
acknowledging that the U.N. arose from motives that, however misguided, were
not altogether malicious. Despite the dangerous flaws in the conception and
development of the United Nations' vision of global unity, it is important to
remember that the effort itself began during the closing days and aftermath
of the Second World War. At the end of such a period of exhausting war and
wickedness it was natural that there would be a great desire to relieve the
world of it happening again. The nations that originally formed the U.N. were
those that had just heroically spent themselves in the struggle to defeat
international evil. We should be slow to criticize their decent impulse to
use that moment of great moral focus to lay a foundation of common action
that would prevent the return of the unimaginable wickedness they had just
seen.

The Charter of the United Nations states that one of the basic purposes of
the organization is "promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and
for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex,
language, or religion." On Dec. 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United
Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Much as the Declaration of Independence did in the American context, the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights has come to epitomize the effort of the
United Nations to advance the cause of human dignity in the world.

So why are conservatives so worried about yielding some of our national
sovereignty to an organization aiming at such high and noble goals? Should we
not fall in line with the more general effort of people around the world to
overcome the distinctions and divisions of nationhood and replace them with a
global community -- particularly when it is so clear that communication
technologies and other factors are rapidly producing a global community
whether the governments of nations like it or not?

That sounds good, until you look at the actual record of the United Nations
over the past half-century. For all the formal rhetoric about human rights,
the United Nations has failed to advance that cause. This failure is
particularly marked in precisely those areas that involve the attempt to
translate the universal language of the Universal Declaration into concrete
respect for human rights. On issue after issue we can tell the sorry story of
the impotence and even the active complicity of the United Nations in the
systematic suppression of both understanding of and respect for those rights.
Like accumulating symptoms that point undeniably to some hidden cause of
physical illness, so the record of the United Nations in advancing human
rights is a list of the symptoms of a fundamental corruption in the effort
itself.

We all need to ask the causes of this failure, because we need to learn from
it. Republican leaders need to learn from it the reasons that many of their
core supporters will withdraw that support if the Republican ticket is tone
deaf on the sovereignty issue. But there is a more important reason to ask
why the U.N. has failed. It is that whatever the eventual fate of the United
Nations may be, or of the Republican ticket in this fall's election, the
effort to advance the universal cause of justice will continue. It is
particularly important that the United States and its citizens take an
intelligent and effective part in this effort, and that means we must
understand the root cause of what has gone wrong with the United Nations.

That cause of failure is actually quite clear. The founders of

Subject: PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY: Global JAM ECHELON Day [Oct. 21]

http://www.wodip.opole.pl/~laslo/Echelon-links.html

STAND UP FOR THE FREEDOM TO EXCHANGE INFORMATION!

We the monitored have decided to stand up against the very real, very
intrusive, and ultimately oppressive global surveillance system known as
Echelon. Echelon is a vast mainframe set up by the New World Disorder in
order to monitor the world's electronic communications for subversive
keywords. Every time you send someone an email with keywords like
"revolution" and "hacktivism" [for instance], Echelon's computers make a note
of it. If you forward emails with regularity with words on Echelon's
extensive keyword list, you may be marked for human "hands-on" monitoring.

On October 21, 1999 , netizens around the globe are implored to send out at
least one email with at least 50 keyword words. You need not be privy to
knowing exactly what words Echelon uses. It is safe to assume that words such
as "revolution" and "manifesto" and "revolt" [etc.] will work. Just be sure
to sound as subversive as possible. There isn't even any need to write a
cohesive paragraph or sentence. Echelon's computers does not understand the
language anyway. It only knows to look for certain words. By doing this we
can at least temporarily jam the global surveillance system.

This day of action will be timed to preceed Stop Police Brutality Day by one
day so that emails about actions can be sent out with little scrutiny due to
what will already be an enormous workload for Echelon.

Now is a chance for anyone, regardless of computer expertise, to become an
instant hacktivist - best of all, no software is needed [other than your
regular email program].

Of course, feel free to conduct such subversiveness any time. The larger
Echelon's workload, the more free our speech.

After October 1, we ask global netizens to merely stop censoring themselves
for fear of spooky scrutiny. By merely deciding to speak in the spirit of
unabashedly subverting the DOMINANCE paradigm, we will make it quite
difficult for Echelon to do its job.

words will trip the keyword recognition filter on a global spy system partly
managed by the US National Security Agency.

The near-mythical worldwide computer spy network reportedly scans all email,
packet traffic, telephone conversations -- and more -- around the world, in
an effort to ferret out potential terrorist or enemy communications.

Once plucked from the electronic cloud, certain keywords allegedly trigger a
recording of the conversation or email in question.
Privacy activists have used the words in their signature files for years as a
running schtick, but on 18 October, the American Justice Federation hopes to
trip up Echelon on a much wider scale.

"What is [Echelon] good for?" asked Linda Thompson, a constitutional rights
attorney and chairman of the American Justice Federation.

"If you want to say we can catch criminals with it, it is insane that anyone
should be able to snoop on anyone's conversations."

"Criminals ought to be caught after they commit a crime -- but police are not
here to invade all our privacy to catch that two percent [of criminal
communications]," she said.

On 18 April, Thompson, along with Doug McIntosh, a reporter for the
federation's news service, and members of the hacktivism mailing list
community, invite anyone concerned about the system to append a list of
intriguing words to their emails.

Specifically, they suggest the following keywords:

FBI CIA NSA IRS ATF BATF DOD WACO RUBY RIDGE OKC OKLAHOMA CITY MILITIA GUN
HANDGUN MILGOV ASSAULT RIFLE TERRORISM BOMB DRUG HORIUCHI KORESH DAVIDIAN
KAHL POSSE COMITATUS RANDY WEAVER VICKIE WEAVER SPECIAL FORCES LINDA THOMPSON

The only mind control case I know right now is the Lambros case. But
Lambros is in Leavenworth and very difficult to deal with. I ran across
another many years ago- Diana de le Vega...a CIA vicitm.

This is only mind control ? We need "Government victims

Citing Strengthened Economy, Brazil Central Bank Will End Formal Request That
Banks Maintain Trade Interbank Lines

 NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 1999--The following statement was
released today by the Central Bank of Brazil: "In March 1999,
international banks led by five regional coordinating banks agreed to
Brazil's request to maintain their trade and interbank lines at February 28,
1999 levels. These banks were Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Banque Paribas,
Citibank, Deutsche Bank and HSBC Holdings. Later on, Caixa Geral de Depositos
and Banca Commerciale Italiana were chosen as coordinators in their
respective countries.

"Citing the strengthening of the Brazilian economy and renewed
confidence in the country, as demonstrated by banks' voluntary increase of
trade and interbank lines to Brazil, the Brazilian economic authorities are
addressing all participating banks to announce that, from September 1st
onwards, it will no longer be necessary to formally ask foreign commercial
banks to maintain their trade and interbank lines to Brazil as originally
requested in March. Instead, they will rely on market conditions going
forward.

"The Brazilian authorities noted that developments in the Brazilian
economy since March have been significantly better than expected. Sound
monetary and fiscal policies have led Brazil to fulfill the targets agreed in
the IMF program. GDP has begun to recover at the end of the first quarter of
1999, inflation has performed significantly better than projected, the
current account deficit was reduced, developments in the capital account have
exceeded expectations and FDI flows have shown considerable strength. The
President of the Central Bank, Arminio Fraga, noted that the positive
response of the banks to Brazil's request had an initial stabilizing effect
and was a critical element in Brazil's economic improvement. The
establishment of a system to monitor bank lines was a productive initiative.
We will keep it operating, he added. The Central Bank will also maintain a
close dialogue with individual banks and expects banks to continue to respond
as positively as they have done in the last six months. Mr. Fraga also
expressed the recognition of Brazil to the role played by the IMF, the BIS,
as well as by Central Banks and Ministries of Finance that participated in
the establishment and implementation of the monitoring process.

"William R. Rhodes, Vice Chairman of Citigroup and Citibank, welcomed
Brazil's announcement. Mr. Rhodes, who was asked by Brazil to help implement
the request as worldwide and North America coordinator, stated that the
banks' response was very positive. 'In fact, a number of banks not only
maintained but also increased their trade and interbank lines,' Mr. Rhodes
noted. He recalled that the country's economic progress during this period
permitted the Government of Brazil to return to the international markets
last April."

Subj: "Federal Reserve System"
Date: 6/9/99 4:07:33 PM EST
From: Ww2vet2
To:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Someone sent me this "brief history of the Federal Reserve System"
I pass it on for your information.

Amendment 16 (income tax) was passed by Congress in 1913.
During this same year Congress created the Federal Reserve Bank (FED).
Eight "families" immediately bought all the stock (Rothchilds of Europe,
Lazards of Paris, Israel Moses Seifs of Italy, Warburgs of Germany, and
the Lehmans, Kuhn-Loebs, Goldman-Sacks, and the Rockefellers, all of
New York). A total of 76% of the FED is owned by foreigners. When the
FED put money into circulation gold and silver were needed in the reserve
to be paid on demand to anyone with a gold or silver certificate (money).
In 1933 we came off the gold standard and in 1963 we came off
the silver standard. As a result, today we have a private group of bankers
in control of printing our money. They (the eight families) charge the U.S.
tax payers 2.5 cents per bill ($l, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100). These private
bankers then loan us this money at face value plus interest. By 1989 our
debt to the FED was more than 3 trillion dollars. A person counting a
$1,000 bill each second would take 399 years to reach
$3,000,000,000,000. Every hour the interest on a 3 trillion dollar national
debt is $29,092,470 ... about 52 cents of every tax dollar goes to pay off
(to the eight families) the interest on this phony debt.
During the 1920's the FED began loaning money to the public to
invest in small businesses and the Stock Market. This began a period of
great prosperity for the American people, known as the "Roaring 20's".
Then in 1928 the "eight families" pulled their money out of the Stock
Market and at the same time made it difficult for we the people to borrow
money. This created a recession making it necessary for people to pull
money out of the Stock Market in order to survive. The Stock Market
came crashing down. The "Great Depression" was born. The next move
for the "eight families" was to go back to the Stock Market and buy up
companies for pennies on the dollar. Since that first great experiment to
control this country's wealth the FED has been manipulated for profit from
inflation and deflation in 1932, 1937, 1957, 1966, 1970, 1976, 1982, and
in our present recession. As the FED (the eight families) grow ever richer
and more powerful, Americans go broke.
Free Enterprise is what made America great. Do not confuse this
with "Capitalism". These "eight families", and others of the super elite,
with all of their capital do not like Free Enterprise. They are driven to own
and control everything they can, and they do not like competition. The
graduated income tax is enforced on the American people to keep small
business and the public from ever being able to compete with them.
Meanwhile the "eight families", and the super elite, set themselves up in
Pure Trusts, and BTO / UBO's to become exempt from paying the tax they
initiated on the American people. Today a mere 1% of the population
controls 90% of our country's wealth.
WHATS THE ANSWER? "We the people" can get back control
of our printing presses. Section 31 of the "Federal Reserve Act" allows
Congress all of the clout needed to terminate the FED. The Government
could then print up U.S. Treasury Notes based on the amount of consumer
goods and services needed. They could loan the States and the people
money at 4% interest, avoiding the FED's usury ... which has taken away
America's hope for a brighter future. The incredible power and influence
of the controlling 1% is not likely going to allow this to happen.

1. CONGRESS COULD CUT AMERICAN'S FEDERAL TAXES BY 95%.

2. MAINTAIN THE CURRENT NATIONAL INCOME STREAM

3. ELIMINATE THE IRS, PERSONAL AND BUSINESS FEDERAL TAX

4. ELIMINATE FEDERAL INHERITANCE TAXES

5.REDUCE THE CRUSHING IMPACT OF GATT, NAFTA AND THE WTO
ON AMERICAN LABOR

6. INITIATE A SIMPLE, PAPER FREE, CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM

TWO LEGISLATIVE ACTS ARE NEEDED:
"ACT ONE"
"NATIONALIZE" THE UNCONSTITUTIONAL and PRIVATELY OWNED
FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM.
As you probably know, the Federal Reserve System sends hundreds of billions of
dollars of the taxes you pay to private individuals..many of whom are foreign
and
are manipulators of the unAmerican associations called the Bilderbergs, the
CFR,
the Tri-laterals etc. The United States should keep this money and pay down or
eliminate the U.S. national debt by having the Treasury department control our
banks and national currency. There is a bill in congress at this time for
this very
purpose. See: HR 1148 IH. Sponsored by Representative Ron Paul of Texas, you
can find it on his web site:

"ACT TWO"
B. A national retail sales tax would simplify tax payment and collection,
expand "our" tax base,
increase total U.S. tax income,
and accomplish campaign finance reform in many ways:

Please see the Tauzin and Trafficant bill currently in the House at web site:

**

Foreign manufacturers and inporters into the U.S. would then pay the same
federal taxes that American based farmers and manufacturers now have to pay.
All foreign goods currently get off scott free.

It's the primary reason for our lopsided balance of trade since Gatt, Nafta,
and the
WTO. Please see web site:

http://www.dismal.com/economy/releases/trade.asp

A NRST is producer paperless, and record keeping free. Countless millions of
dollars are currently spent on internal recordkeeping, tax lawyers and
accountants. No depreciation schedules... No information revealing tax
returns!
All consumer and producer paper work would be performed at the point of sale
by the goods or services selling business.
THE NRST SYSTEM IS SIMPLICITY ITSELF.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM IS A BI-PRODUCT OF A NRST!!
Legislators couldn't manipulate the codes infavor of Merck or China or anybody
else. Hopefully the lobbiests would be able to find honest employment.

Much more information is available on these subjects.

Top Mexican Off-Limits to U.S. Drug Agents

By TIM GOLDEN

WASHINGTON -- Early last year, as undercover U.S. Customs agents neared the
end of the biggest investigation ever conducted into the illegal movement of
drug money, bankers working with Mexico's most powerful cocaine cartel
approached them with a stunning offer.

The agents, posing as money launderers from Colombia, had insinuated
themselves deeply into the Mexican underworld, helping the traffickers hide
more than $60 million. Now, money men working with the cartel said they had
clients who needed to launder $1.15 billion more. The most important of those
clients, they said, was Mexico's powerful defense minister.

The customs agents didn't know whether the money really existed or if any of
it belonged to the minister, Gen. Enrique Cervantes, officials said. But
having heard about American intelligence reports pointing to corruption at
high levels of the Mexican military, the agents were mystified by what
happened next.

Rather than continue the undercover operation to pursue the deal, Clinton
administration officials ordered to shut it down on schedule several weeks
later. No further effort was ever made to investigate the offer, and officials
said prosecutors have not even raised the matter with the suspects in the
case, who have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with the authorities.

"Why are we sitting on this kind of information?" asked the former senior
customs agent who led the undercover probe, William F. Gately. "It's either
because we're lazy, we're stupid, or the political will doesn't exist to
engage in the kind of investigation where our law-enforcement efforts might
damage our foreign policy."

Senior administration officials denied that foreign policy influenced their
decision to end the operation, saying they were moved primarily by concerns
for its security. They also emphasized that the agents were unable to verify
the Mexican traffickers' claims.

Other officials of the administration, which has based much of its Mexican
drug strategy on collaboration with Cervantes, said they are confident that he
is above reproach. A spokesman for the Mexican Defense Ministry, Lt. Col.
Francisco Aguilar Hernandez, dismissed the traffickers' proposal as self-
serving lies.

But a detailed account of the case -- based on confidential government
documents, court records and dozens of interviews -- suggests that U.S.
officials walked away from an extraordinary opportunity to examine allegations
of the official corruption that is considered the main obstacle to anti-drug
efforts in Mexico.

For nearly a decade, American officials have been haunted by the spectacle
of Mexican officials being linked to illicit activities soon after they are
embraced in Washington. And just weeks before the customs investigation, known
as Operation Casablanca, ended last year, administration officials received
intelligence reports indicating that the Mexican military's ties to the drug
trade were more serious than had been previously thought.

But when faced with the possibility that one of Washington's critical
Mexican allies might be linked to the traffickers, the officials gave the
matter little consideration. They said they opted for a sure thing, arresting
mid-level traffickers and their financial associates and at least disrupting
the money laundering system that drug gangs had set up. To reach for a
general, they said, would have added to their risks with no certainty of
success.

"Obviously it was a significant allegation," Customs Commissioner Raymond W.
Kelly said in an interview. But he added: "There was skepticism about it. Was
it puffing? It just was not seen as being -- I won't use the word credible --
but it wasn't verified."

When senior administration officials announced the sting last May 18, they
took a triumphant inventory: the indictments of three big Mexican banks and
bankers from a dozen foreign banks; the arrests of 142 suspects; the
confiscation of $35 million in drug profits and the freezing of accounts
holding $66 million more.

The officials claimed the success as the result of a longstanding
administration fight against money laundering. But Gately, who retired from
the Customs Service on Dec. 31, said his investigation ran a gantlet of
resistance from the start.

The Justice Department, uncomfortable with cases in which undercover agents
laundered more money for drug traffickers than they ultimately seized, were
imposing new limits on the time that such operations could run and the money
they could launder, officials said. And though the restrictions did not apply
to Customs, a branch of the Treasury, Justice Department officials continued
to play strong, skeptical roles in supervising cases throughout the
government.

One federal official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, admitted that
he initially dismissed Gately's plan as a nonstarter. "You're out of your
mind," the official

Some Say America in Cultural War

By CALVIN WOODWARD Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - There's a ``war'' going on in this country, but most people may not notice. It's about whether absolute right and wrong exist and whether Americans can even tell the difference.
In the midst of prosperity, some thinkers see a decline in things money cannot buy - values, morals and old truths.
Commentator Pat Buchanan pledged at the onset of his third presidential campaign to ``clean up all that pollutes our culture.'' Another prominent activist from the right, Paul Weyrich, has gone as far as suggesting conservatives separate themselves from U.S. culture - ``an ever wider sewer,'' he called it - because the ``enemy'' has won.
A president who lied and still leads is held out as an example of cultural decline. So are magazine covers peddling sexual gratification and raunchy TV. Even the move toward turning George Washington's birthday into a generic Presidents Day is cited as a sign of how this country has fallen.
``I wonder if, after this culture war is over that we are engaged in, an America will survive that will be worth fighting to defend,'' Rep. Henry Hyde of Illinois, the leading House impeachment prosecutor, told the Senate in his effort to unseat President Clinton.
The culture war is an apocalyptic struggle ranging across the landscape of national life, yet hardly visible to so many. It takes multiple forms: the constitutional impeachment drama, Hollywood fare, billboard advertising, the teaching of history, behavior on college campuses, Internet content and more.
The question about absolute truth vs. relativism has engaged philosophers since the earliest time: Is truth eternal and unchanging or is it relative, depending on circumstance, time and place?
To the cultural warriors, America is ``slouching towards Gomorrah,'' the biblical city destroyed for the sinfulness of its people. Yet the disquiet is difficult for many to fathom. Most social indicators either are good or improving.
``There is a cultural war among the elite,'' says Boston College sociologist Alan Wolfe, author of ``One Nation After All.'' ``But it doesn't go much farther than that.''
Even some of the book titles at the center of the conflict recognize that people are not really with it: William Bennett's anti-Clinton ``The Death of Outrage'' and Robert Bork's ``Slouching Towards Gomorrah.''
James Hunter, who popularized the phrase in scholarly circles with his 1980s book ``Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America,'' agrees the fight mobilizes no more than 10 percent of the population.
But he says that does not diminish its intensity or importance. Elites, after all, shape what is taught to children, shown on TV, turned into law and resolved in courts.
``Certainly the majority of Americans live their lives fairly removed from these kinds of tensions,'' he says. ``That doesn't mean there's not a culture war.''
The culture war is often traced to the 1960s, the decade of protest, free love, beads and bad pants. Some slogans from that time still hold meaning today, among them ``Do Your Own Thing.''
``Americans are pretty tolerant,'' says Todd Gitlin, once at the vanguard of the counterculture as president of Students for a Democratic Society. ``They have their judgments. They just don't think people should enforce their judgments.''
Gitlin, who wrote ``The Twilight of Common Dreams: Why America Is Wracked by Culture Wars,'' concedes the 1960s eroded traditional authority and brought on the ``rambunctious relativists'' - perhaps the sort of people who later would judge that Clinton should stay in office.
That is how GOP Rep. Tom Delay of Texas, the majority whip, saw the impeachment struggle. He told the House it was ``a debate about relativism vs. absolute truth.''
Some public opinion research indicates Americans, while more religious than many cultures and hardly freewheeling about sex, are moving toward consensus on many social issues. No seething cultural conflict is apparent.
Wolfe ticks off areas where he is finding common ground among most Americans.
``Working women,'' he offers. ``That used to be a big fight. Race - we used to have overt and explicit racism. No one questions the principle any more of racial equality. God - we used to have furious battles between Catholics and Protestants.''
An August 1998 poll by The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation found strong majorities supporting both ``traditional family values'' and the idea that people should be tolerant of those who live by moral standards that they consider wrong.
But for some warriors there remains too much moral equivocation, too much garbage on the tube, too far a drift from the verities.
Weyrich, president of the Free Congress Foundation, declared that his side has ``probably lost the culture war.''
He is suggesting conservatives consider such steps as home schooling and getting rid of TV,

I like Buchanan - whether he is liked or not, he seems like a good guy.

The generic President's Day; I always wondered by St. Patricks Day
could not be made into a National Holiday - the Fitzgeralds carried the
arms of Saint Patrick, or vice versus - he carried their Coat of
Arms..

St. Patraicks Day is a day a lot of people celebrate, the Irish Catholic
in particular; even the orange Irish, celebrate it I image.

It is said the Irish make the sign of the cross when they hear the name
of JOhn Fitzgerald Kennedy - but the Fitzgeralds name was virtually
blotted out of history.almost a biblical curse against them by King
Henry.

Anyway, for those who did not like JFK, you would get an official day
off work; for those who make the sign of the cross when their hear his
name, you have a day you earned through grief of the death of a
potential Saint.

And for those who don't give a hoot - well life goes on, and the sun
also rises.

IMF talks calm Brazil's markets

Picture
IMF talks calm Brazil's markets
Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso has met with senior negotiators
from the International Monetary Fund who are hammering out possible solutions
for the country's deep financial crisis.

After the meeting, he said that "the situation in Brazil is developing the way
we wanted ... with the return of confidence in the markets."

The real, the Brazilian currency, has held steady on foreing exchange markets
following the appointment of a former aide to international financier George
Soros as the country's new central banker on Tuesday.

The IMF's First Deputy Managing Director Stanley Fischer and other fund
officials had a working breakfast with President Cardoso in the official
presidential residence in Brasilia.

Also attending the breakfast were Brazilian Finance Minister Pedro Malan and
the newly-nominated president of the central bank Arminio Fraga Neto.

Picture: [ image: width=150]

The President later told reporters that it was "not crucial" that the IMF
speed up a second $9bn instalment of international loans for Brazil because
the country's foreign currency reserves were at a "comfortable" level.

However the government hopes Mr Fischer's presence will accelerate the release
of a second slice of the $41.5bn international loan package assembled by the
IMF.

High interest rates

The two sides must first negotiate new targets for Brazil's budget, interest
rates and foreign exchange rules following its surprise devaluation three
weeks ago.

The IMF has given a clear signal that it expects Brazil to keep its interest
rates high to defend the currency.

"Clearly the tightness in monetary policy will continue," said IMF Deputy
Managing Director Alassane Ouattara. "Our experience in Asia has shown that it
is important to see a firm monetary framework at the beginning of a crisis."

Brazil raised its interest rates to 39% on Monday. But the continuation of
high interest rates could send the Brazilian economy into a deep recession
this year.

More credible banker?

Mr Fraga is a former central bank official who has until recently directed the
speculative activities of Soros Fund Management, the powerful investment
vehicle of the international billionaire George Soros. He replaces former
central bank chief Francisco Lopes, who lasted just three weeks in the job.

He was international affairs director at the central bank between 1991 and
1992 under former President Collor de Mello, before joining the Soros Fund in
1993.

He has now severed all his links with Mr Soros and "there is no relation
between his opinions and those of his former boss," according to Brazil's
Finance Minister Pedro Malan. Mr Soros has been advocating some sort of
international currency coordination recently.

Picture: [ image: width=150]

Mr Malan said that the appointment "in no way represents any change in the
direction and orientation of economic policy." He said further changes would
be announced at the central bank shortly.

Mr Fraga's appointment was seen by economists as giving Brazil's economic
policy more credibility in international financial markets.

"He's a very serious man," said Inter-American Development Bank economist
Ricardo Hausmann. "I think if he announces an economic programme...it will
have a lot of credibility, and I think that we're seeing that right now as we
speak in the strengthening of the real."

And a foreign exchange dealer added: "A guy with practice in the market is
going to help a lot more than somebody who just knows theories."

Mr Fraga will only take over when he is confirmed by the Brazilian Senate in
hearings which will begin on 22 February following the Carnival holiday.

Until then, the central bank's International Affairs Director Demosthenes
Madureira de Pinho Neto would serve as interim head.

Meanwhile the Finance Minister revealed that he had submitted his own
resignation, but it had been refused.

"I will remain in the position as long as I have the benefit of the
president's confidence," Mr Malan said.

Real on the rebound

The real meanwhile was trading at 1.77 - 1.79 to the dollar on Wednesday. It
had gone as low as more than 2.0 reals to the dollar on Friday, a devaluation
of more than 40%.

The Sao Paulo stock exchange, the largest in South America, was up 1.4% in
early trades on Wednesday. It closed down 1.79% on Tuesday.

The embattled currency has recovered since panic eased about weekend rumours
that the government was planning extreme measures such as freezing bank

Oh yes. She's looking much better these days, and I think she even thinks
some of the money will thee for her. Well, whoever was paying and paving the
way before will probably make sure she comes out at least a little ahead.
After all, it's either keep her happy or make sure she has a fatal accident.
Those one-car things that happen to investigative reporters and minor MAFIA
figures is very effective. They sure can't let Paula blab. Prudy

Hi, i'm new to this list but i was wondering if anyone had
discussed the
high probability of the Millenium Bug being a government (New World
 Order?) conspiracy.

It seems highly unlikely that no one was aware of the fact that 90% of
computers did not recognise the year 2000. It also seems unlikely that it
has only been mentioned in the last 2 years.

Let's face it, the world could potentially fall into mass chaos. As we
all know, this kind of situation can be advantageous to a lot of people in
 power

Hey Richard, welcome to the list! I've been researching the issue
rather extensively and I've been asking the same questions you have. As for
it becoming advantageous for the elite, I know that is extremely probable.
I wouldn't be surprised if maybe they would even help the problem to be
worse then what it naturally will have been. I see them having to create or
for there to be a time of crisis for them to implement their NWO philosophy
on us all through martial law. And what better for it to be a Crisis that
affects the whole globe. Something else we need to understand is that in
order for their plan to work, they need computers, satellites, communication
towers etc... I'm sure all these devices won't fail. So to answer your
question... Yes, they knew about Y2K, but it was only for them to know and
us to know only when it was too late.

 In Christ,
  Jamie
