The accepted theory is that they wandered south along the shoreline of the western Arabian peninsula...the heat during the day results in a fair amount of moisture being absorbed into the air, resulting in that moisture precipitating out as dew being deposited in the night (which can be pretty cold in the desert)... This is my first post to this list, so greetings everyone...I've been interested in Manna and psychedelics for a while now and I agree with the "shroom theory". Soaking shrooms in honey for a long time will result in a stained blue and psychedelic honey...I liked the idea so much that I created www.bluehoney.org - This is my reply: "Something falling from heaven is entirely different than something springing from the earth. The Israelites just couldn'thave been so stupid they could not tell that difference"--No one saw anything fall from the sky, the Manna appeared overnight with the morning dew (also they had no roots like other plants that they were familiar with). Now, I wouldn't call anyone stupid but the Israelites did wander for 40 years, you can't do that without going in a lot of circles. Besides...look at what these people did before they left Egypt...they were slaves, not gardeners. This is ignorance, not stupidity. How many Israelites could have had a mushroom experience before they escaped Egypt? The honey also acted as a preservative, which would keep the potency for well over a year. On the surface that argument sounds good, and I'll admit that there is certainly a possibility that this line of research by Terence McKenna, et al., is flawed and psilocybe mushrooms are not "manna from Heaven". But consider the Children of Israel supposedly wandered for 40 years, whose to say they stayed in the desert the entire trip? In fact, unless I'm mistaken, the word used to describe where they wandered was in the 'wilderness', not in the 'desert', per se. Simply because they started off in a desert region of Egypt and 40-years later settled in the arid land of Canaan, doesn't necessarily mean they stayed in a desert region totally devoid of rain and dew throughout their wanderings. They had cattle with them, they had plenty of cow pies. I mean how long would it take to travel from Egypt to Canaan? Several months, a year, two years, several more years? To me, 40 years sounds like quite a long time to travel that distance. More importantly, they only had manna for a certain part of their trip, and by the time they settled in the arid land of Canaan, there was no more manna to be had, which is consistent with the theory that they traveled from Egypt to a less arid region where psilocybe mushrooms were able to grow on their cow pies in the morning dew, and over the decades wandered out of the region, settling in Canaan, where the shrooms could no longer grow, thus no more manna for the Children of Israel. Once again, from the original page I posted: The Bible never tells us exactly what manna was and where it came from, but there are many Old Testament passages which describe its physical qualities and conditions associated with its appearance. The Bible's first reference to manna is in the Book of Exodus as the children of Israel are fleeing from Egypt and following Moses into the wilderness. After six weeks of wandering, they began complaining to Moses that they are tired and hungry. When I read this passage, I was struck by the fact that manna easily fits the description of psilocybe mushrooms. For one thing magic mushrooms are small and round, and since they sprout so rapidly they would seem to appear overnight, as if out of the sky. Also, anyone harvesting them would immediately notice that they turn blue where torn and had no roots, giving more reason to believe that the mushrooms were of celestial origin. Note that manna does not just fall from heaven, but instead it is described as coming with the frost and dew, during the wet seasons. These are the precise weather conditions for mushrooms to thrive. And finally, manna is described as a bread. Although translations have obscured the intent of this passage, it seems to be a description of how to find and identify manna and distinguish it from other non- psychoactive (or possibly lethal) mushrooms. Look for the small round things which are like bread, come with the rain, and seem to have heavenly (bluish) coloring. Psilocybe mushrooms also sprout in tiny pin heads which branch out in all directions and bear a resemblance to hear frost. It is also interesting to note that Moses tells the children of Israel that manna comes directly from Heaven to test them on whether or not they will walk in God's law. Here is evidence that manna was endowed with unusual spiritual powers, like those of magic mushrooms. However, manna does not automatically confer spiritual power. Instead, it serves as a test. Magic mushrooms would provide visionary experiences that would certainly test all who ingested them. Moses also said that the manna is literally the "bread of the lord" which is remarkably similar to the literal Aztec name for psilocybe mushrooms, "flesh of the gods." But how and why did the manna suddenly appear? Again referring to the Bible, it is clear that the children of Israel had journeyed to a land where there was dew in the morning. As a large, nomadic tribe, the Israelites brought a lot of cattle and sheep together in the area. That meant a great deal of manure. The change of climate from the arid lands of Egypt to the dewy climate of the wilderness created ideal conditions for the propagation and spread of psilocybe mushrooms in livestock dung. Sounds like something described in Immanuel Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision", but much more 'hard to swallow', IMO. So are you saying that you believe manna is some "heavenly corn, tasting like honey," that "fell on the earth after the contact of the earth with a celestial body"? Let me guess, this 'celestial body' was not Venus as Velikovsky assumes; rather it was something much more like a giant, intergalactic Honey Corn Pop that shred and rained down bit's and pieces of breakfast cereal from the heavens to earth each morning while it slowly passed? As for myself, I'll stick with Occam's Razor and the shroom theory. Most importantly, unlike all other growing plants in the world, this fungus had no roots or seed -- something which must have mystified and perplexed the wandering tribe. Remember, they came from an arid land and it is certainly possible that most of them had never seen a mushroom growing before, until their 40-year wandering took them to a region where the mushrooms grew (and eventually outside to another arid region where they no longer grew, thus no more manna for the Israelites). Is it not possible that "falling from heaven" is used metaphorically to describe this process, and smooth over their confusion as to how and why the mushrooms would sprout up overnight, seemingly out of nowhere. A mystical food that allowed seemingly direct 'communion' with God. Mushrooms were also seen as 'winged' creatures, or crowned by a cloudy cap or 'halo,' each carrying a 'message' from God in heaven, the very definition of an 'Angel'. John M. Allegro's book "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross: A Study of the Nature and Origins of Christianity within the Fertility Cults of the Ancient Near East" (1970) has much scholarly info revealing human religion was built upon psychoactive plants, especially Christianity. In effect, according the Allegro, Christianity was the esoteric disguise of a secret mushroom cult whose original content was eventually forgotten. One of the more compelling tid bits that recently turned me on to the mushroom theory with regards to the origins of religion and secret societies is from James Arthur's "Mushrooms Mankind", which I quoted several weeks ago: "Revealing the secrets of Entheogens, which is one of the most closely guarded secrets of Freemasonry (as well as many other secret societies) is something that can only be done by a layman (non-member). This is because if you have initiation at that level you could not discuss it any further. Secret Societies are called Secret Societies because they keep certain secrets. I have spoken personally with High Priests and Bishops (Secret Society Initiates), who simply told me that they could NOT discuss anything with me because of their oaths of secrecy. In fact they were so blown away that I knew the information, that it scared the hell out of them. Entheogens, and particularly the Amanita muscaria, are a HUGE secret. The initiatory rites, into this particular field, are so far up the totem pole of secret societies and religions that when you find those who know, they really freak out, that anyone else knows, because it cuts to the deepest recesses of their self perceived spirituality, and cuts to the center of their most secret God/Society given indoctrination experiences.
