# Handguns Dramatically Increase Suicide Risk. BOSTON (Reuters) In the week
after buying a handgun, the purchaser was 57 times more likely than the
general populace to commit suicide, according to a Calif. study. Men are
4 times more likely to suicide in the year after buying a handgun than men
in general. Women, who bought just 12 percent of guns in Calif, suicided
16 times more often than other females during the 1st year of gun owner-

# Spirits in the Silicon World - MIT theologian looks to smart robots for
insight into religious questions. For thousands of years, mythical robots
have been used to explore the question of what makes humans human. In the
Middle Ages, Jewish cabalists spun myths about golems, clay creatures

Data have raised the question: "Can man-made creatures have souls?" Anne
Foerst's job is to ask that question, but not about mythical creatures. As

# Japanese cops raid cult over forgeries. Japanese police yesterday swooped

# Company Hopes Gene Trawl Will Bring In Big Catch. ROCKVILLE, Md. (Reuters)
When a fisherman goes out to sea, he may have an idea of what kind of fish
he would like to catch but he will usually take whatever turns up in the
net. But when Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGS) computers trawl through the
human genome, they know precisely what they want to find. "We ask first
what disease we want to cure." Many groups are racing to sequence, or map,
the mass of genes other genetic material that makes up the human genome.
One reason to search is to find causes of diseases possible new ways to
treat or prevent them. But unlike others, HGS sees no reason even to look
at the small fry. The firm's future is staked on the premise that they can
pick a disease -- say, cancer -- think of a way to fight it -- maybe by
stopping uncontrolled cell growth -- then find a gene that will do that.

# Alternative Medicine's Explosive Growth. (WebMD) Alternative medicine is

@ SPACE WARP. I show how a minor modification of the Alcubierre geometry can
dramatically improve the total energy requirements for a "warp bubble" that
can be used to transport macroscopic objects. A spacetime is presented for
which the total negative mass needed is only in the order of grams, accompa-
nied by a negligible amount of positive energy. This constitutes a reduction
of the absolute value of the energy by 65 orders of magnitude. The new geom-
etry satisfies the quantum inequality concerning WEC violations and exhibits
the same advantages as the original Alcubierre spacetime. Prepare to transit

WHAT'S NEW Robert L. Park Friday, 4 Jun 99 Washington, DC

1. MIR: BAGGED AFTER BRIT BILLIONAIRE BUNGLES BAILOUT. In a last desperate
bid to save wobbly Mir, Russia agreed to let Peter Llewellyn play cosmonaut
if he'd pay for training and dig up investors willing to pony-up $100M for
first crack at all the research results, like... well that's the problem.
Industry likes to be paid to build space stations, but who would invest in
one? Mir will be abandoned because no one could think of anything useful to
do with it and it's being replaced by a bigger and more expensive version.

2. ISS: AT LEAST IT WAS QUIETER ON MIR. The International Space Station hit
a milestone: its first repair mission, not entirely successful. Astronauts
did fix the broken radio and replace the flawed battery packs, but they had
to wear ear plugs while they worked because of a noisy fan... a fan that
must run 24 hours a day. They tried wrapping the fan in foam, and thought
maybe it was a bit better. But even at the slightly reduced level, the ISS
crew will be required to wear ear plugs. Or play Jewell on the boombox.

3. HYPERDRIVE: "STAR WARS PROPULSION DRIVE SOARS TOWARD REALITY." A May 18
NASA blurb from Marshall SFC says "hyperdrive" in Star Wars gets its punch
from fusion, so NASA's busy developing fusion propulsion at MSFC. "Achieving
the level of technology portrayed in Star Wars is quite a challenge," says
an MSFC official, who said it would also require "overcoming the physical
limitations of space itself in order to travel faster than the speed of
light." As soon as they take care of the fan they'll get right on it.

*** Pope hears Good Friday confessions. VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope John Paul II
heard confessions from nine people in St. Peter's Basilica on Good Friday,
hours before a solemn procession at Rome's Colosseum. For a fifth year, the
pope walked for only a short stretch with others carrying a wooden cross in
an evening procession that symbolizes Christ's suffering before his cruci-

*** Jerusalem pilgrims mark Good Friday. JERUSALEM (AP) Thousands of pil-
grims, some clutching large wooden crosses, walked through the rosemary-
scented alleys of Jerusalem's Old City in a Good Friday procession, retra-
cing Jesus' steps to crucifixion. Franciscan monks led pilgrims from around
the world along the Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrows, starting at the tradi-
tional site of Jesus' trial and ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher,
believed to be built over the place of his crucifixion and burial. Worship-
pers sang hymns and read prayers in Arabic, Italian, English and other lan-
guages. See http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2559031286-9e8

*** Filipinos crucified in ritual. SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines (AP) - At
least 10 Filipinos were nailed to crosses in a village north of Manila and
scores of others flogged themselves as they walked shirtless and barefoot in
annual Good Friday rites of penitence. Hundreds of tourists and journalists
flocked to San Pedro Cutud to watch the Easter week celebrations in Asia's
only predominantly Roman Catholic nation. Stainless steel nails soaked in
alcohol are used in the re-enactments of Jesus' crucifixion. In the more
than 40 years that the ritual has been held in the village, no serious
injuries have been reported. Filipinos observe Lent with fasting and acts
of repentance. See www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2559030752-a55
