It is about scientific research being done to attempt to tap in to the energy of the vacuum, sometimes called zero point energy. It claims that a scientist called Jordan Maclay has got a grant from NASA's "Breakthrough Propulsion Physics" programme to see if he can design a machine to access and use this energy. It is early days yet, but given that this, or something like it, would be an ideal way to supply the energy for long distance space travel, it might turn out to be how some UFOs are propelled. If so then we should keep an eye on this type of research, especially as some scientists claim that UFOs could not have got here, from wherever they might come from, because it would require too much energy. If you can tap into this energy as you move along then that puts an end to that argument. The article claims that the amount of zero point energy available is staggering. "Maclay has calculated that a region of the vacuum the size of a proton could contain as much energy as all the matter in the entire Universe" (p.32). Pity we can't run our cars on the stuff! More about Iowa: Today I talked to a Mr. Zellaney (spelling may be off) of the Des Moines Register, who is the assistant to David Yepsin, the Political Front Man for the Des Moines Register who is seen on national TV on numerous talk shows leading up to the Iowa Caucuses. Mr. Zellaney was on deadline and said he only had a minute or two, but he didnt hurry me and was very courteous. Trying to respect his time, I quickly asked the following questions. I asked him if the Des Moines Register had published results by county. He said, yes, the final edition of Wednesday, January 26, 2000 had numbers by county. (It did not occur to me to ask him if these were final results, but well find that out tomorrow.) Next, I told him how C-Span showed a Democratic caucus in Ames, Iowa and a Republican caucus in Decorah, Iowa and how during BOTH caucuses C-Span said that the precinct leaders had been instructed to call the results into a central location in Des Moines. I then asked him if he knew where that central location was, and if both party precinct leaders were calling into the same central location. Mr. Zellaney said he thought both party leaders were calling into phone banks at their own respective headquarters. I asked him if he knew if Voter News Service was involved in counting the vote for both parties. He said he knew they were doing entrance polls, but he didnt think they were involved in the vote count. Next I called Mrs. Lois Pusateri in Dubuque, Iowa to see if she had seen any final results. They announced that their local newspaper, the Herald Tribune, which serves Dubuque and surrounding counties, on Wednesday carried results in those counties with percentages only, no numerical results. Very interesting. About six hours later, at about midnight EST I went to the Des Moines Register website, where we find that results for each county are posted for both parties. Interestingly, the Dems are final, the Republican results are listed as raw data. There is no source cited for these results on the website. Are these final results? Doesnt say. Are these results from AP wire like in 1996? Doesnt say. . . Are these results from Republican and Democratic headquarters? Doesnt say. . . There is one sharp contrast, as noted above: The Democrats pick delegates and do NOT release vote totals for each precinct, but only how many delegates were elected from each precinct to go to the state convention. So, we find that the Des Moines Register publishes that 100% of the Democratic precincts have reported for EVERY county; in other words, there is no problem in reporting that 100% of the Democratic precincts assembled. But not so for the Republicans. On the GOP side we see so far, as in 1996, a reluctance to be too specific as to how many have reported. Stay tuned. I am ordering the Des Moines Register edition of the actual newspaper from Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday of this week (the 3 days after the Caucus) to see exactly what theyre putting in the paper. It is difficult to deny that something is happening to some of the many people claiming to have been abducted by the Greys; this has lead the more adventurous researchers to seek other possibilities as to what might be behind the phenomenon. Perhaps the most startling, frightening, and in many ways convincing of these is the mind control hypothesis. This is by no means new, Jacques Vallee and others have been hinting in this direction since the late 1960's; but in the last few years it has become increasingly evident that the suspicions of researchers such as Vallee, Walter Bowart and Martin Cannon may be disturbingly close to the truth. WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? By Mark Pilkington Tense nervous headache? Always run down and irritable? Not feeling yourself? Well maybe that's because you're not yourself, rather, you are being controlled from somewhere else by someone else. Last year "Tomorrow's World" (a British Broadcasting Corporation science programme) featured a man whose Parkinson's Disease symptoms could be controlled by pressing a switch on a handset which in turn operated a tiny device implanted into his brain. No more shaking, no more tears. This is the friendly, caring side of the neural implant, but many people believe that dark forces are at work, trying to take over the minds of their targeted subjects via tiny objects inserted into various parts of the body. These sinister controllers take many forms; some say that it's the CIA or other shadowy intelligence outfits; others that it's the secret world government, plotting for world domination; others still that it's malicious aliens, the Greys, who use implants as tracking devices so that they can abduct their hapless victims anytime, anyplace and operate on them aboard their spacecraft. Sometimes the Greys are working for the government, sometimes the government is working for the Greys, and sometimes the government is working as the Greys, using remote hypnotic devices to trigger off the abduction fantasy as a disguise for what's really going on. Ex-soldier Timothy Mcveigh, prime suspect in last year's Oklahoma City bombing, has recently announced that he has himself been sporting such an implant after being witness to many UFO encounters on his farm. One might expect this to be an elaborate attempt to plea insanity, but knowing the current climate in much of America, I wouldn't be so sure. But it's not just "over there". In a letter sent to John Major in 1992, Lennart Lindqvist, international secretary for a group dedicated to uncovering illicit mind control operations, wrote; "...we have become aware of several victims in Great Britain; reports received from exploited individuals refer to mental hospitals, police authorities and prisons as among the state institutions involved in the implantation of ... electrodes of radio-transmitting crystals in people." He goes on to quote a letter from a Mr N'Tumba, a British victim; " Concerning the brain transmitter in my head, it has benn performing without my knowledge or consent...What's very outrageous is that I am sharing all my visions, thoughts, images, hearing etc. with people around me as the security services are engaging in a large scale propaganda drive to smear my character, background, behaviour, emotions and motives...I have no privacy at all" (1). Lindqvist states that X rays of Mr. N'Tumba's brain , analysed by a Dr. Lindstrom, noted for his pioneering use of ultrasonics in neurosurgery, clearly show an object implanted into his left nostril as well as others blocking the oxygen flow to his brain. You might be excused for dismissing Mr N'Tumba as a paranoid schizophrenic were it not for the fact that ordinary, respected people, all across America in all walks of life, are reporting similar things. These are the Abductees, and according to some researchers there are up to two million of them. One of these researchers, Dr. David Jacobs, is an associate professor of history at Temple University in Philedelphia; he writes; " Towards the end of the examination, the aliens either implant a small, round seemingly metallic object in the abductee's ear, nose, or sinus cavity, or remove such an object. The object is...small, it usually is smooth, or has small spikes sticking out of it, or has holes in it." The legend was often a business trip, during which the agents could covertly link up with other spies permanently stationed in the West. According to German intelligence specialists who described the task of Mr. Putin, now acting president of Russia, the goal was to steal Western technology or NATO secrets. A newly revealed document shows that Mr. Putin was trying to recruit agents to be trained in ''wireless communications.'' But what purpose such training would serve is not clear. To this day, Mr. Putin defends the Soviet-era intelligence service. In recent comments to a writers' group in Moscow, he even seemed to excuse its role in Stalin's brutal purges, saying it would be ''insincere'' for him to assail the agency where he had worked for so many years. Fiercely patriotic, Mr. Putin once said he would not read a book by a defector because ''I don't read books by people who have betrayed the motherland.'' Such is the professional background of the man who emerged unexpectedly at the end of December to take over from President Boris Yeltsin. As acting president, Mr. Putin is the clear favorite to win the March 26 elections for a four-year presidential term. A review of his career shows that Mr. Putin previously thrived in closed worlds, first as an intelligence operative and later in municipal government in St. Petersburg. Until he was picked in August by President Yeltsin to become prime minister, Mr. Putin had never been a public figure. He spent 17 years as a mid-level agent in the KGB's foreign intelligence service, rising only to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Later, as an aide to a prickly and controversial mayor of St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city and Mr. Putin's home town, he made a point of staying in the background. Yet Mr. Putin's career also suggests that he witnessed firsthand the momentous finale of the Cold War. From the front line in East Germany, Mr. Putin saw how the centrally planned economies of the East staggered to disintegration. In St. Petersburg, he had a taste of the ragged path of Russia's early transition to a free-market, democratic system. What Mr. Putin has taken from these experiences is not entirely clear. He has embraced the conviction that ''there is no alternative'' to market democracy, and soberly acknowledged Russia's economic weaknesses. But he also has expressed enthusiasm for reasserting the role of a strong state. This particular speeder, however, could not only outrun any highway-patrol cruiser in Delaware, but was beyond the reach of anyone else in the state. Even the US Air Force, with its surveillance radars at Dover Air Force Base, was unable to identify the miscreant. The incident was not isolated. A rudimentary data search turns up a stream of such incidents since the early 1990s, from Florida to Nebraska, Colorado and California, with a similar pattern: a loud and inexplicable boom. The phantom boomers appear to avoid densely populated areas, and the stories usually go no further than the local paper. Only a few local papers have a searchable website, so it is highly probable that only a minority of boom events are reported outside the affected area. The first conclusion from this data is that supersonic aircraft are operating over US. Secondly, we may conclude that the USAF and other services either cannot identify them, or that they are misleading the public because the operations are secret. The latter case is supported by the existence of a massive secret structure, which can truly be described as a 'shadow military', and which exists in parallel with the programs that the Department of Defense (DoD) discloses in public. It is protected by a security system of great complexity. Since 1995, two high-level commissions have reported on this system, and have concluded that it is too complex; that it is immensely expensive, although its exact costs defy measurement; that it includes systematic efforts to confuse and disinform the public; and that in some cases it favors security over military utility. The defense department, however, firmly resists any attempt to reform this system. As the Clinton administration begins its last year in office, it continues to spend an unprecedented proportion of the Pentagon budget on 'black' programs - that is, projects that are so highly classified they cannot be identified in public. The total sums involved are relatively easy to calculate. In the unclassified version of the Pentagon's budget books, some budget lines are identified only by codenames. Other classified programs are covered by vague collective descriptions, and the dollar numbers for those line items are deleted. However, it is possible to estimate the total value of those items by subtracting the unclassified items from the category total. In Financial Year 2001 (FY01), the USAF plans to spend US$4.96 billion on classified research and development programs. Because white-world RD is being cut back, this figure is planned to reach a record 39% of total USAF RD. It is larger than the entire army RD budget and two-thirds the size of the entire navy RD budget. The USAF's US$7.4 billion budget for classified procurement is more than a third of the service's total budget. Rise and rise of SAP Formally, black projects within the DoD are known as unacknowledged Special Access Programs (SAPs). The Secretary or Deputy Secretary of Defense must approve any DoD-related SAP at the top level of the defense department. All SAPs are projects that the DoD leadership has decided cannot be adequately protected by normal classification measures. SAPs implement a positive system of security control in which only selected individuals have access to critical information. The criteria for access to an SAP vary, and the program manager has ultimate responsibility for the access rules, but the limits are generally much tighter than those imposed by normal need-to-know standards. For example, an SAP manager may insist on lie-detector testing for anyone who has access to the program. Another key difference between SAPs and normal programs concerns management and oversight. SAPs report to the services, and ultimately to the DoD and Congress, by special channels which involve a minimum number of individuals and organizations.

As I pointed out in my recent article on HAARP, there was one obvious discrepancy in the faxed document concerning the zip code--it correlated to Fort Myers and not Washington D.C. as the document stated; however at 1455 Overlook Ave., in Fort Myers is a vast multi governmental complex which houses, among other things, National Security Agency offices. Interestingly enough at 4555 Overlook Ave. (SW) in Washington D.C. is the Naval Research Laboratory, a large facility with a staff of over 4000 people, which is in fact the headquarters of the Navy's HAARP operations. The discrepancy regarding the address as well as the April 1 date on the document could provide ample wiggle room for those involved or knowledgeable to discredit the document. However in a rare public display of agitation, foolishness, confusion or ineptness, a Pentagon spokesman today issued a statement commenting on the HAARP document in question; a response notable indeed for being a complete, total and what's more, unnecessary lie. Rather than addressing any of the points I raised in my request, nor any of the elements of the faxed document, even the potentially questionable ones, a Navy spokesman chose instead to attempt to completely discredit the document (and myself) and derail any serious inquiry by making a reply which is in one instance at least blatantly and demonstrably untrue. I include below my request to the Navy for a comment on the HAARP fax, the Navy's repsonse, and my reply to their lie. * To Whom This May Concern: We are seeking a statement from Admiral Falvey or a direct associate, colleague or superior, pertaining to the fax received in early April 1998 and reprinted verbatim below. This document and much of the information within it could most likely ONLY have originated from within the intelligence arm of the U. S. Navy or other intelligence/military group, due to the tremendous amount of classified information in the document, as well as the inexplicable way it was received. "HAARP's space-generated ELF(extremely low frequency) waves, coming back down to the earth, can be utilized in many different ways, such as communicating with submarines or creating harmful biological and mental effects upon a specifically targeted population. HAARP can also be utilized in a system of earth-penetrating tomography, for locating hidden underground bunkers in enemy territory or the buried arms, survival supplies, and valuable coins buried by U.S. patriots and militias. "The 1/96 'Progressive Magazine' reported that a 1995 article, 'Non-Lethal Technology and Air power' in the 'Air Command and Staff College's Air power Journal', describes how so-called non-lethal psychotropic and electromagnetic weapons will be used against civilians: 'In the very near future, it will become clear that non-lethal methods have applicability across the entire spectrum of conflict, including crime and terrorism...' "In this research paper, the authors reveal for the first time, the U.S. military is developing high-powered microwave weapons for use against human beings (which is one of the hidden goals of the HAARP transmitters). Such 'microwave weapons are almost uniquely intrusive' (especially when they are pulsed at ELF frequencies). 'They do not simply attack a person's body, they reach all the way into a person's mind...They are meant to disorient or upset mental stability.' It is thus shocking to see the U.S. military now preparing, with the help of the Justice Department, to use such electromagnetic totalitarian zapping devices against American civilians. "Years before he became House Speaker, Newt Gingrich wrote the foreword to an official U.S. Air Force book that described how electromagnetic weapons can be used to subjugate U.S. citizens who oppose the policies of the Federal government. The publication, titled 'Low Intensity Conflict and Modern Technology' (Lt. Col. David J. Dean, USAF, Editor), contained a chapter written by Capt. Paul Tyler that deals with electromagnetic, (so-called) non-lethal and psychotropic weapons. Because of the strong support for using the U.S. military against civilians (as clearly demonstrated by recent anti-terrorist legislation), this Air Force publication (and its relationship to HAARP) is very significant. Capt. Tyler stated: 'The potential applications of artificial electromagnetic fields are wide-ranging and can be used in many military or quasi-military situations. "...Some of these potential uses include dealing with terrorist groups (as currently defined by the Clinton administration), crowd control, and...antipersonnel techniques in tactical warfare. "Why?" cried the patient. "I'm not dead yet." "Shut up," said the doctor. "We're not there yet." That lugubrious joke is being told about Vladimir Putin, chosen by the Kremlin clique to succeed Boris Yeltsin. In eight weeks, riding a wave of war hysteria, this K.G.B. apparatchik is likely to be elected president -- to take his patient, Russia, to the cooler of repression and autocratic rule. President Clinton refuses to see this. In his whirlwind junket to the annual Davos gathering of politicians, executives and scientists, his lame-duck army of aides passed the word that Putin could well be a closet democratic reformer. Americans here were already embarrassed by their president's royal arrival. The day before, Britain's Tony Blair came with a modest party of 15 to deliver his speech. But when hundreds of junketeering Clintonites descended on Davos, meeting participants were ordered out of the hall to make room for the huge entourage. When the offended audience resisted, the Clinton traveling claque had to relent. More dismaying was the Clinton refusal to see that its Russia policy -- by failing to tie economic aid to democratic reform and property rights -- has been a flop. The result has been the takeover of the government by a combination of corrupt oligarchs, the internal police and the army. Yeltsin's extended "family" put a K.G.B. man in place, took advantage of lawlessness in Chechnya to launch a popular war and called a snap election to capitalize on the war fever. By so doing, they avert prosecution for corruption and silence the beginnings of a free press. It's working for them. An instant cult of personality has been created for Putin -- tough-minded and lean-bodied, in contrast to the staggering Yeltsin -- and he rides high astride his Chechen warhorse. The army is with him: he pays the troops, and has raised spending on armaments by 50 percent. He is a man whose basic principle is to have no inconvenient principles. His first major political act was to double-cross the fake reformers close to the Kremlin by making a deal with the Communist Party. Now Putin controls the Kremlin while his new Communist allies -- along with the wildman Vladimir Zhirinovsky -- dominate the parliament. He is now counting on his generals to crush the Chechens before March 26, election day, or at least to provide the illusion of low-casualty victory until then. His surprise enemy at home is the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers, a hard-to-harass group that provides casualty figures 10 times greater than Kremlin disinformation. He has been suppressing the truth by arresting journalists who dare to report from the front lines and silencing independent TV commentators. Media controlled by Boris Berezovsky, the Putin sponsor reportedly denied entry to Davos by Swiss authorities, tout the new Napoleon to the skies and besmear opponents. That opposition is on the run. Names like Primakov and Luzhkov -- seemingly sure things for power six months ago -- have faded fast. The Communist boss Zyuganov exists only as a foil with no future. The only real reformer left standing is Grigory Yavlinsky, who suffered losses for daring to denounce the switch in goals from anti-terrorism to all-out war. He is gutsily running again, but his time won't come until Russians tire of stagnation, weary of war and are no longer bamboozled by the Kremlin-controlled media. Until then, Putin is the oligarch-K.G.B.-army choice. But his quick popularity in polls rests on war fever; when that dissipates, so may he. If he does not win a majority in the first round, the fickle Russian public could drop him overnight. The irony is that a "Putin era" would mean an uncompetitive, economically weakened Russia -- no threat to the West. A "Yavlinsky era" would marry a literate work force to a free-market system under law -- and Russia would soon compete as a world power. It is difficult to deny that something is happening to some of the many people claiming to have been abducted by the Greys; this has lead the more adventurous researchers to seek other possibilities as to what might be behind the phenomenon. Perhaps the most startling, frightening, and in many ways convincing of these is the mind control hypothesis. This is by no means new, Jacques Vallee and others have been hinting in this direction since the late 1960's; but in the last few years it has become increasingly evident that the suspicions of researchers such as Vallee, Walter Bowart and Martin Cannon may be disturbingly close to the truth. WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? By Mark Pilkington Tense nervous headache? Always run down and irritable? Not feeling yourself? Well maybe that's because you're not yourself, rather, you are being controlled from somewhere else by someone else. Last year "Tomorrow's World" (a British Broadcasting Corporation science programme) featured a man whose Parkinson's Disease symptoms could be controlled by pressing a switch on a handset which in turn operated a tiny device implanted into his brain. No more shaking, no more tears. This is the friendly, caring side of the neural implant, but many people believe that dark forces are at work, trying to take over the minds of their targeted subjects via tiny objects inserted into various parts of the body. These sinister controllers take many forms; some say that it's the CIA or other shadowy intelligence outfits; others that it's the secret world government, plotting for world domination; others still that it's malicious aliens, the Greys, who use implants as tracking devices so that they can abduct their hapless victims anytime, anyplace and operate on them aboard their spacecraft. Sometimes the Greys are working for the government, sometimes the government is working for the Greys, and sometimes the government is working as the Greys, using remote hypnotic devices to trigger off the abduction fantasy as a disguise for what's really going on. Ex-soldier Timothy Mcveigh, prime suspect in last year's Oklahoma City bombing, has recently announced that he has himself been sporting such an implant after being witness to many UFO encounters on his farm. One might expect this to be an elaborate attempt to plea insanity, but knowing the current climate in much of America, I wouldn't be so sure. But it's not just "over there". In a letter sent to John Major in 1992, Lennart Lindqvist, international secretary for a group dedicated to uncovering illicit mind control operations, wrote; "...we have become aware of several victims in Great Britain; reports received from exploited individuals refer to mental hospitals, police authorities and prisons as among the state institutions involved in the implantation of ... electrodes of radio-transmitting crystals in people." He goes on to quote a letter from a Mr N'Tumba, a British victim; " Concerning the brain transmitter in my head, it has benn performing without my knowledge or consent...What's very outrageous is that I am sharing all my visions, thoughts, images, hearing etc. with people around me as the security services are engaging in a large scale propaganda drive to smear my character, background, behaviour, emotions and motives...I have no privacy at all" (1). Lindqvist states that X rays of Mr. N'Tumba's brain , analysed by a Dr. Lindstrom, noted for his pioneering use of ultrasonics in neurosurgery, clearly show an object implanted into his left nostril as well as others blocking the oxygen flow to his brain. You might be excused for dismissing Mr N'Tumba as a paranoid schizophrenic were it not for the fact that ordinary, respected people, all across America in all walks of life, are reporting similar things. These are the Abductees, and according to some researchers there are up to two million of them. One of these researchers, Dr. David Jacobs, is an associate professor of history at Temple University in Philedelphia; he writes; " Towards the end of the examination, the aliens either implant a small, round seemingly metallic object in the abductee's ear, nose, or sinus cavity, or remove such an object. The object is...small, it usually is smooth, or has small spikes sticking out of it, or has holes in it." (2) Jacobs notes that implants are left near the brain; subjects often wake up with ear or nose bleeds after an abduction and sometimes small objects will drop out when a person blows their nose. Some (including lawyers) have said yes, on the grounds that a key is non-testimonial. Others (again, including lawyers) have pointed out that a key may not be testimonial, but that a defendant's knowledge of it is, and that the key is therefore covered by the Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination. There's now a new wrinkle. According to an article in the NY Times CyberLaw Journal (see http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/01/cyber/cyberlaw/28law.html), the issue arose during the Mitnick case. However, rather than demanding the key under penalty of a contempt citation, the prosecutors declined to turn the encrypted files over to the defense team. Although Rule 16 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure require the government to turn over documents that "were obtained from or belong to the defendant", the prosecutor argued that the government didn't really possess the files, since they couldn't read them. They further claimed that the files might have illegally-obtained information or "for all we know, it could be plans to take down a computer system." The information "might be dangerous"; it was likened to a defendant asking for a coat back without the government knowing if there was a pistol in the pocket. The judge sided with the prosecutors. Unfortunately, the ruling probably can't be appealed at this point, given the plea bargain. THE GLOBALIST CULTURE WAR
Rewriting the past as Orwell pointed out, a totalitarian regime must invest
heavily in this essential task. In Orwell's famous novel, 1984, the regime of
Big Brother openly proclaims the malleability of history in the following
slogan: "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present
controls the past." No one understands this better than the propagandists of
the European Union (EU), who are now embarked on a new project, the founding of
a "Museum of Europe." As a cultural monument, this Museum is faced with an
almost impossible task: to imbue the bloodless soul-less diktaks of the
Brussels bureaucracy with the aura and mystery of an instant tradition, a faux
"culture" conjured entirely out of thin air. The result confirms my theory of
humor: that the best of it is unintentional. . . .
THE SOULLESS MONSTER
The Eurocrats are not unaware of their predicament: the Museum's mission
statement admits that most see the EU as a "cold, bureaucratic monster, a
soulless producer of administrative edicts." Ah, but this can be overcome, they
aver, by dressing up the Monster in different historical costumes, and
inventing a fake "history" of the "European idea." As the Museum's mission
statement puts it: "The European Union which is taking shape before our eyes is
not a recent invention born of politicians' whims but the product of a long
maturation of a time-honored idea as old as Europe itself." In opening up the
question of the history of the European idea, its political and ideological
antecedents, the Eurocrats are putting their cards on the table cards that
bear some pretty provocative symbols starting with the swastika.
FASCISM AND "THE EUROPEAN IDEA"
Ah yes, the "time-honored tradition" of pan-European integration. EU
propagandists have pointed to the postwar "pan-European" movement as having
grown out of the resistance to Hitlerism, but the reality is quite different.
Nazi propagandists were the first modern purveyors of European continentalism
a program forcibly implemented by Hitler's legions as they overran a vast
territory from Normandy to the Urals. The earliest purveyors of Italian fascist
and German ultra-nationalism latched on to the European idea from the very
start, organizing exhibitions and conferences eerily similar to those now
making their debut all across Europe under EU auspices. As the New York Times
reports, "Lack of consensus has not hindered the proliferation of museum shows
emphasizing" the new "Pan-European culture"; the Council of Europe is
sponsoring a traveling exhibition, which is now on tour. Reading this
immediately brought to mind the photograph illustrating the second chapter of
John Laughland's remarkably learned and provocative book, The Tainted Source:
The Undemocratic Origins of the European Idea. It is a photo that shows a
photographic exhibition organized by the French Waffen SS in Paris, 1944,
entitled "The Waffen SS is fighting for Europe." French collaborators, dressed
in full Nazi regalia, schmooze with their German conquerors, and the caption
reads: "Just over a year later, it was soldiers from the French Waffen SS
division 'Charlemagne' who were to be among the last to defend the Reichstag
from Soviet attack."
CHARLEMAGNE'S GHOST
Speaking of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman emperor has become the Eurocratic
icon of choice, a fitting symbol of their overarching ambition but not
without some opposition. A battle royale is breaking out among the Eurocrats
between Greek classicists and medievalists. Greece has taken umbrage at the
Museum directors over their concept of the European idea as being rooted in the
Middle Ages. Clearly, the Greeks assert, this is a slight to the classical era:
is not Greece the "cradle of democracy"? Well that may be, reply the Museum's
officials, such as scientific director Elie Barnavi, but that is simply not
good enough: the problem, reports the Times, is that "Greek civilization failed
to promote a larger European consciousness . . . because it discriminated
between citizens and barbarians. Roman civilization featured a similar
dichotomy," avers Barnavi, and so cannot meet the EU's high standards of
political correctness. And so it is out with the first philosophers, the
founders of the world's first republics not only Aristotle but the original
explicators of natural law theory, the Stoics and in with the ninth century
absolutism of Charlemagne and rule by "divine right." Such are the political
uses of history.
HEIL EUROPA?
The Orwellian character of the EU and its propaganda is eerie in the extreme.

But to a critical eye his speech revealed a very different picture. Try as he might to present a rose- colored view of American life, the president's own words betrayed the existence of a profound social crisis. Clinton set the tone for his entire speech with his opening remarks: Never before has our nation enjoyed, at once, so much prosperity and social progress with so little internal crisis and so few external threats My fellow Americans, the state of our union is the strongest it has ever been. Next came the by-now standard recital of economic triumphs: 20 million new jobs, the fastest economic growth in more than 30 years, the lowest unemployment rates in 30 years, the first back-to-back budget surpluses in 42 years, the longest period of economic growth in US history. Then the president assured corporate America that his administration's repudiation of liberal reformism was irreversible. This was expressed in the language of euphemism: We restored the vital center, replacing outmoded ideologies ... Later in his address, Clinton provided another, inadvertent, testimony to the Democratic Party's repudiation of its liberal past. He became visibly rattled when, intending to say livable, he misspoke and talked of making communities more liberal. That the term liberal, which designated the dominant outlook of the Washington establishment for much of the twentieth century, is today a political epithet says a great deal about the rightward shift of American politics over the past two decades. Clinton went on to declare that America had to dream big dreams and set great goals. As it turned out, the biggest dream and the greatest goaland the line which received the loudest applause from the assembled dignitarieswas the pledge: We will pay off our national debt for the first time since 1835. When he got down to listing specific proposals, Clinton sought to reassure big business that his talk of big dreams and great goals was not to be interpreted too literally. Such grand words applied to the realm of abstraction. When it came to actual policies and programs, he proposed the far more comforting byword: step by step. In any event, as he and his audience were well aware, there was virtually no chance that Congress would pass even the most modest social measures. Notwithstanding his opening boasts of prosperity and social progress, as soon as Clinton began to touch on such issues as education, health care, the elderly, crime, etc., a radically different picture emerged. One needed only to cut through the rhetoric and, so to speak, decipher his speech to perceive the grim reality that underlay Clinton's idealized characterization of social conditions in the US. On the issue of education, for example, Clinton spoke of the need for pre- school and after-school programs, and properly trained teachers. This was an allusion to the critical shortage of qualified and accredited public school teachers, and the lack of facilities for tens of millions of children who live in families where both parents are forced to work, often holding down multiple jobs. Clinton noted that a third of all our schools are in serious disrepair, with walls and wires so old, they're too old for the Internet. He called for getting students out of trailers and into classrooms. As for higher education, he acknowledged that millions of families still strain to pay college tuition. Against the backdrop of the profound crisis indicated by his own words, Clinton's education initiativeswhich he declared his top social prioritywere at best token measures. Their total cost would be $4 billion, a mere 0.2 percent of the federal budget. Moreover, Clinton combined proposals for hiring teachers and renovating schools with reactionary calls to close failing schools and nearly double the number of quasi-private charter schools. On health care, Clinton admitted that the ranks of uninsured Americans had grown since he took office seven years ago, surpassing the staggering figure of 40 million. He proposed initiatives that would at best cover 10 million uninsured people, timid measures which he gamely sought to magnify: Think of thistogether with our children's initiative, this action would enable us to cover nearly a quarter of all the uninsured people in America. As with every other aspect of social conditions in America, Clinton glided rapidly over the state of elderly Americans. Nevertheless, his words provided a glimpse of a harsh reality. In a nutshell, the value of a life, it seems, is high for him and his liberal elite, but low, that is, nil, for the handicapped the rest of us falling somewhere in between. By attending the seminar maybe the president wanted helpful pointers for things to come. Or, did he attend as a critical observer of the deranged workings of Singers mind? "In hindsight," the Commission said in the new decision, "we see the difficulty of minting clear definitional parameters for 'educational, instructional or cultural' programming, particularly without the benefit of broad comment. Therefore, we vacate our additional guidance. We will defer to the editorial judgment of the licensee unless such judgment is arbitrary or unreasonable." The order also said that the Commission had received "many communications" from the public on the matter. Commissioner Michael Powell said in statement, "As I predicted in my dissenting statement opposing this 'additional guidance' in the original order, it has opened a Pandora's Box of problems. In today's decision we put the lid back on the box." Commissioner Susan Tristani dissented from the reversal, saying, "This is a sad and shameful day for the FCC. In vacating last month's 'additional guidance,' . . . this supposedly independent agency has capitulated to an organized campaign of distortion and demagoguery." The FCC indicated that it expected to issue a public notice on the need for a similar policy in the future. Rep. Michael Oxley (R-OH), who planned to introduce legislation that would have nullified the new guidelines, called the reversal "a complete and total victory for free religious expression." "Religious broadcasters and their listeners were a target for an FCC that sought to limit their freedom to express religious faith," Oxley said in a statement released to CNSNews.com. "It was wrong, and I'm thrilled that the FCC has seen the error of its ways." "What we've been hoping for all along is for the FCC to reverse its decision without the need for legislation," Karl Stoll of the National Religious Broadcasters told CNSNews.com. "This a victory for all broadcasters, because it reinforces the validity of the First Amendment and the freedom of speech." The new guidelines from the FCC - first reported January 5th by CNSNews.com - require broadcasters operating on noncommercial educational licenses to devote at least one-half of their programming hours to topics that serve the "educational, instructional or cultural needs of the community." To qualify, the Commission continued, that programming must not be "primarily devoted to religious exhortation, proselytizing, or statements of personally-held religious views and beliefs." The decision, released December 29, 1999, allowed PBS station WQED in Pittsburgh, Penn., to swap one of its two stations for religious broadcaster Cornerstone TeleVision's WPCB in Greensburg, Penn., in anticipation of that station's sale to Paxson Communications. Just a thought... :) http://unisci.com/stories/20001/0131004.htm People Have Little Memory Of Objects That Rotate New research in the February issue of the American Psychological Association's Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance suggests that while people easily remember the direction of objects that move toward or away from them, or past them from side to side, they have virtually no memory for the direction of objects that rotate. In multiple experiments, psychologist David Gilden, Ph.D. and his then graduate student Christy Price of the University of Texas at Austin, showed 48 undergraduate students computer-driven objects that moved either right or left across the screen or rotated clockwise or counterclockwise, or grew larger or smaller, mimicking the way objects look when they move toward or away from you. During the first phase of the experiment, the students studied the objects as they moved on the screen. The researchers then showed them the same objects either moving as they had previously or in a new direction, or with a different motion. After several experiments, Gilden and Price found that study participants could accurately recall five minutes later the direction of the motion of both looming (movement toward or away from you) and translating (movement from one point to another) objects but they only performed at the level of chance when trying to remember the direction of rotating objects. This is particularly curious because looming motion and rotating objects both project fairly complicated patterns of movement on the retina. Looming motions seem to be as complicated visually as rotations and seem also to be processed in the same area of the brain. So, if the complexity of the image on the retina predicts cognitive function, people's memory for looming motion would be approximately equal to their memory for rotating motion. But Dr. Gilden's current experiments prove that it is not. Why are human beings so poor at remembering the direction of rotating objects? Dr. Gilden theorizes that being able to judge a looming or translating object had consequences for people throughout our evolution. It was critical, for example, to know whether the animal you were hunting was coming at you or retreating. But there were no similar instances that made a memory mechanism for rotating objects important. "Apparently," Dr. Gilden concludes, "visual understandings are not organized in terms of the complexity of what is on the retina, but rather in terms of what the practical consequences are for behavior. When it comes to motion, humans are much more concerned with where things are going than with their orientation." Therefore, Gilden concludes that the best way to teach people to pull a car out of a spin is to teach them rote rules for doing so, because we do not remember enough about rotations to be able to control the spinning car based on past experiences. Dr. Gilden plans to continue to study people's inability to remember rotating motion in an attempt to find the point in the visual system where rotating movement is dropped rather then being passed on to higher cognitive and memory regions of the brain. He believes that because rotations held no evolutionary significance for us, the brain simply developed to ignore them at highly cognitive levels. JOSEF HEBERT Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Reversing a position held for decades, the government has concluded for the first time that many workers who built America's nuclear weapons - including those at Hanford in Washington state - likely became ill because of exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals, officials said Saturday. The findings, based on a review of dozens of studies and raw medical data covering an estimated 600,000 workers at 14 nuclear weapons sites, could lead to compensation to the families of some of the workers. Many were unaware that they were being exposed to such health risks. The report's findings included workers at plutonium production facilities at Hanford, Savannah River in South Carolina; the Rocky Flats plant near Denver, where plutonium was molded into weapons components; uranium enrichment and processing plants at the Oak Ridge, Tenn., complex; the Fernald uranium processing plant near Cincinnati; and the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national laboratories in California and New Mexico, respectively. None of the plants still produce nuclear weapons. While the draft report of the studies did not show a direct causal link between workplace exposures and specific illnesses, it found that workers at the plants suffered higher than normal rates of a wide range of cancers and clearly were exposed to cancer-causing radiation and chemicals in the workplace. The studies, reviewed by a special task force, examined health records and other data covering three decades of the Cold War from the late 1940s into the 1960s. An official familiar with the report emphasized it does not relate to workers' conditions today. But the draft report, which President Clinton ordered last July, marks a reversal in the government's long-standing position that no links exist between work conducted at the Cold War-era weapons plants and later illnesses. That argument has stymied numerous lawsuits seeking compensation. While the compensation issue has yet to be resolved, the government now is acknowledging that hundreds - perhaps thousands - of workers may well have been made sick by their working environment. "It does appear that in the DOE complex, there is a direct link between exposure and the possibility of contamination," Energy Secretary Bill Richardson said in Davos, Switzerland, where he is accompanying President Clinton at an economic forum. In an interview with The Associated Press, Richardson cautioned that the findings are preliminary and won't be completed for several months. Still, Richardson said, if the findings are borne out, "The honorable thing for the government to do is to protect its workers, past and present," including compensation. The report said elevated rates of 22 categories of cancer were found among workers at 14 facilities in the department's atomic weapons complex. They included leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma and cancers of the prostate, kidney, salivary gland and lung. "The exposures we are seeing are in excess" of those in similar population groups, a source familiar with the report said. "We don't know what the cause is, but it's clearly related to exposure there (in the workplace)." President Clinton ordered the review after the Energy Department concluded the government should compensate workers who had developed an incurable lung disease because of exposure to beryllium, a material used in nuclear weapons production. Richardson and the White House wanted to determine if other nuclear weapons plant workers likewise should be compensated because of exposure to plutonium, uranium and a variety of radioactive or highly toxic substances. The interagency group reviewed dozens of epidemiological studies, raw health data and other documents, many of which in the past have been dismissed by the government. The draft report makes no conclusion on compensation, which will be examined in the coming months. Recommendations are likely in the final report. One official said compensation most likely would be to families "in the hundreds, not thousands," although the number at this time remains little more than a guess. Clinton will use the final report to develop a recommendation to Congress, which is responsible for providing the money. The draft report's conclusions were first reported Saturday by The New York Times. Daniel J. Guttman, an attorney for the Paper, Allied-Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers Union, told the Times the government turnabout was stunning, because for years the government has marginalized the risks to the thousands of weapons plant workers.

"Several texts suggest that some kind of upheaval resulting in civil disorder occurred at the end of the Old Kingdom," says Dr. Donald B. Redford, professor of classics and ancient Mediterranean studies. "Until now, there has been no archaeological evidence of these events." Toward the end of the Old Kingdom at about 2100 B.C., the state declined in wealth. The Nile's annual discharge replenishing the fertility of fields diminished and famine was frequent, according to Redford, a faculty member in Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts. The remains were found at Mendes in Egypt, two hours north of Cairo in the central portion of the Nile delta and 50 miles from the coast. The site shows occupation during a long period from prehistory through the 26th dynasty, or about 500 B.C., and includes a temple, necropolis and harbor as well as habitation areas. Redford, along with Douglas Brewer of the University of Illinois and Robert Wenke of the University of Washington, has been excavating at the site since 1991. Final positions of the bodies -- arms placed over the heads and bodies sprawled in contorted attitudes exactly as they fell -- indicate that the individuals died of trauma. Masses of mud bricks covered the bodies, with the uppermost layer fire-blackened, indicating destruction of the surrounding area. "The date of this destruction is clear from the ceramic record and the stratigraphy that place it in the second half of the 6th Dynasty," says Redford. "The presence of flimsy mud-brick walls built over the debris is an apparent attempt to reuse the area afterwards." Another interesting aspect of the 1999 summer dig was the discovery of a series of curved walls and platforms, including a courtyard surrounded by curved walls in the temple area. "Typically, the Egyptians did not create curvilinear walls, but relied on straight line walls and sharp angles," says Redford. "These curved structures are interesting and puzzling." This semicircular court, which the expedition has not completely excavated, is the area where the 18 individuals were found. In another area of the site, the deputy director, Susan Redford, found 11 granite sarcophagi that once contained the embalmed bodies of rams. The temple at Mendes was originally dedicated to the ram god and the practice was to choose a perfect ram as the embodiment of the gods. "By 343 B.C., the Persians were tending towards monotheism," says Redford. "They pulled the sarcophagi out of their burial chamber, destroyed the mummified rams and threw the sarcophagi out." The excavators located the original vaulted cubicles where the sarcophagi had originally rested. One sarcophagus was still partly in place, as were bronze fittings from the doors. Redford believes that this burial vault dates from about 800 B.C., or the Third Intermediate period, but is unsure where the Egyptians interred earlier rams. In 1991, the archaeologists excavated the royal necropolis and in 1995, began working on the temple area. The existing temple was built in three phases and was destroyed, probably in the Middle Ages. It's probable that he hasn't seen the autopsies, and so is only making a reasonable assumption that an explosion on the roof of the room would subject the interior to a spray of concrete rock shrapnel, killing anyone inside who might be alive. In any event, it makes little sense to have him lie about Waco if he's telling the truth about OKC. Here is my response: Of course we know SOMETHING caused the hole in the roof of the concrete room. But there is a reason Ramsey Clark and Gordon Novel asked Partin to write an affidavit, and not you or me. Partin is a munitions expert. We are not. Partin was not asked for a "reasonable assumption." He was asked for expert opinion. In his affidavit, Partin gave his *expert* opinion about the hole in the roof of the concrete room and the fireball. As an *expert,* he said the fireball appeared over the roof and was part of the phenomenon that caused the hole. As an *expert* we might expect Partin to base his opinion on the evidence. But the evidence contradicts Partin. The fireball did not appear over the roof of the concrete room. Therefore the fireball was not part of the phenomenon that caused the hole in the roof as Partin inferred. Partin got the location of the fireball wrong, despite easy availability of photographic evidence and layouts of the Mt.Carmel Center. Partin also said the fireball was caused by a breaching charge. So Partin also got the cause of the fireball wrong. Are we supposed to believe Partin wrote and signed an affidavit on the fireball and the hole in the roof without looking at the photographic evidence and layout diagrams, and Partin pontificated about the deaths of the mothers and children without looking at the autopsies? What WAS Partin basing his analysis on, if not the evidence? Ian Goddard e-mails? Or does the same military intelligence unit write the scripts for Partin and Goddard? Twice during the last several years I have confronted Partin at public meetings and interrupted him as he was spooning out Waco disinformation--disinformation about the concrete room and the bodies of the women and children. The first confrontation occurred before dozens of people at the 1997 Surveillance Expo (organized by Jim Ross of Ross Engineering in N. Virginia). When I spoke up, Partin just tried to shut me up. On one occasion Partin addressed the critical issues I raised with these words: "Details, details, details." If details are beyond an explosives expert, I'd hate to be around when one of his bombs go off. They'd probably go off an hour early, in his back pocket. I had a second confrontation with Partin at a meeting of the Sarah McClendon Study Group in Washington DC. The results were pretty much the same. He just ignored my questions and went on with his script. On neither occasions did Partin seem to be even remotely embarrassed. After both events I approached Partin and spoke to him amicably. Because we have known each other slightly over a number of years and because we both live in the N. Virginia area, I invited Partin to my office to have a look at ALL the relevant evidence on my very own computer. Despite my repeated invitations and his knowledge of my phone number, Partin never called me to take me up on the offer. That is, he did not call me until the evening of January 5, 2000. Someone had faxed him a copy of "Waco Suits for Waco Suckers." What did Partin have to say about my representation of him? He had one correction: He told me he had never worked at McDill Air Force base! I told Partin that if he had any disagreement about my representation of him, he should put it in writing and send it to me. So far I have received nothing. If Partin was real, surely he would not hesitate to commit himself to writing and correct me. Have you ever noticed that fakes are so full of hubris they think no one notices their pants are on fire? Now to address your question: Why would Partin furnish what seems like a credible analysis of the OKC blast? Representatives of Mahyco, the Indian seed company bought up by the US Biotech company Monsanto, through whom Monsanto plans to launch its G.E. products in India, will be playing a leading role in the public private partnership. While last year Monsanto was visible and aggresive marketing G.E. crops in India, it now operates in biotech debates using MAHYCO using as a shield. Indian farmers organisation had uprooted Monsanto's G.E. field trials in December 1998. The Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, New Delhi, has also filed a case in the Indian Supreme Court to stop the field trials since they violate Biosafety regulations at every level. Since the global biotechnology industry is facing popular resistance in India, an attempt is being made to launch biotechnology via the public sector and as an organic option. Now, the borough of Conshohocken west of Philadelphia has become the second community in Pennsylvania to prohibit motor vehicle drivers from using cell phones while driving. Pennsylvania's governor is even considering a legislative proposal to ban cell phone use by drivers throughout the state. (February 1, 2000 12:03 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - An Alaska Airlines jet with 88 people aboard plummeted into the Pacific Ocean on Monday after its pilot reported mechanical problems and was diverted to Los Angeles for an emergency landing. Several bodies were recovered from the chilly water, but there was no sign of survivors hours after the crash. Flight 261, heading from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to San Francisco and later to Seattle, went down at 4:36 p.m. PST, the airline said. A large field of debris rolled in big swells about eight miles offshore as aircraft and small boats converged on the site just before sunset. Hours later, the high-power lights of commercial squid boats illuminated the darkness as a cutter and small boats continued the search. Several bodies were found, Coast Guard Lt. Chuck Diorio said, but he could not give a specific number. "Every resource is out there to find people," said Coast Guard Capt. George Wright. "We're actively searching for survivors. ... In 58-degree water temperature, people can survive. We're not going to quit until we're positive there's absolutely no chance." Alaska Airlines spokesman Jack Evans said the plane was carrying 83 passengers and five crew members. The plane was an MD-83, part of the MD-80 series aircraft built by McDonnell Douglas, now part of Boeing, said John Thom, a spokesman for Boeing's Douglas aircraft unit. The plane that crashed had been delivered to Alaska Airlines in 1992, Thom said. The airline said the pilot reported having problems with the "stabilizer trim" and asked to be diverted shortly before the plane crashed. "Radar indicates it fell from 17,000 feet and then was lost from radar," San Francisco airport spokesman Ron Wilson told KRON-TV. On the MD-80 series airplanes, the horizontal stabilizer looks like a small wing mounted on top of the tail. The stabilizer, which includes panels that pitch the nose up and down, is brought into balance, or "trimmed," from the cockpit. If a plane lost its horizontal stabilizer, it would have no means to keep the nose pointed at the proper angle up or down, and the plane would begin an uncontrollable dive. A source with close knowledge of the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the flight was normal and stable until the crew reported control problems. Radar showed the plane plunging toward the ocean shortly afterward. Evans said the plane had no previous stabilizer problems, and FAA spokesman John Clabes said it had never been in an accident. Evans also said the plane was serviced on Sunday, went through a low- level maintenance check on Jan. 11 and had a more thorough routine check last January. It was unclear what Sunday's service entailed. Alaska Airlines, which has a distinctive image of an Eskimo painted on the tails of its planes, has an excellent safety record. It serves more than 40 cities in Alaska, Canada, Mexico and five Western states. The National Transportation Safety Board was assembling a team of investigators in Washington, D.C., and planned to send them to the crash site, spokesman Pat Cariseo said. Gov. Gray Davis said he had ordered the California National Guard to offer whatever help is needed. At least 10 people survived. Last Oct. 31, EgyptAir Flight 990 plummeted into the ocean 60 miles south of the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. All 217 people aboard the Boeing 767 were killed. The most recent fatal crash in the United States involving an MD-80 series jet was last summer's American Airlines accident in Little Rock, Ark. I doubled the display time of the image at 00:00 UT because *the image immediately preceeding the crash, at 00:15 UT was missing, the only image in the series that was missing*. I guess that was just a coincidence... Was this a weather modification experiment based at Vandenberg AFB? I have seen other weather anomalies in the past off this point and did not realize Vandenberg AFB is just north of this location. Are these weather anomalies natural, artificially-produced, or a combination of both? (February 1, 2000 12:03 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - An Alaska Airlines jet with 88 people aboard plummeted into the Pacific Ocean on Monday after its pilot reported mechanical problems and was diverted to Los Angeles for an emergency landing. Several bodies were recovered from the chilly water, but there was no sign of survivors hours after the crash. Flight 261, heading from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to San Francisco and later to Seattle, went down at 4:36 p.m. PST, the airline said. A large field of debris rolled in big swells about eight miles offshore as aircraft and small boats converged on the site just before sunset. Hours later, the high-power lights of commercial squid boats illuminated the darkness as a cutter and small boats continued the search. Several bodies were found, Coast Guard Lt. Chuck Diorio said, but he could not give a specific number. "Every resource is out there to find people," said Coast Guard Capt. George Wright. "We're actively searching for survivors. ... In 58-degree water temperature, people can survive. We're not going to quit until we're positive there's absolutely no chance." Alaska Airlines spokesman Jack Evans said the plane was carrying 83 passengers and five crew members. The plane was an MD-83, part of the MD-80 series aircraft built by McDonnell Douglas, now part of Boeing, said John Thom, a spokesman for Boeing's Douglas aircraft unit. The plane that crashed had been delivered to Alaska Airlines in 1992, Thom said. The airline said the pilot reported having problems with the "stabilizer trim" and asked to be diverted shortly before the plane crashed. "Radar indicates it fell from 17,000 feet and then was lost from radar," San Francisco airport spokesman Ron Wilson told KRON-TV. On the MD-80 series airplanes, the horizontal stabilizer looks like a small wing mounted on top of the tail. The stabilizer, which includes panels that pitch the nose up and down, is brought into balance, or "trimmed," from the cockpit. If a plane lost its horizontal stabilizer, it would have no means to keep the nose pointed at the proper angle up or down, and the plane would begin an uncontrollable dive. A source with close knowledge of the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the flight was normal and stable until the crew reported control problems. Radar showed the plane plunging toward the ocean shortly afterward. Evans said the plane had no previous stabilizer problems, and FAA spokesman John Clabes said it had never been in an accident. Evans also said the plane was serviced on Sunday, went through a low- level maintenance check on Jan. 11 and had a more thorough routine check last January. It was unclear what Sunday's service entailed. Alaska Airlines, which has a distinctive image of an Eskimo painted on the tails of its planes, has an excellent safety record. It serves more than 40 cities in Alaska, Canada, Mexico and five Western states. The National Transportation Safety Board was assembling a team of investigators in Washington, D.C., and planned to send them to the crash site, spokesman Pat Cariseo said. Gov. Gray Davis said he had ordered the California National Guard to offer whatever help is needed. The weather was clear at the crash site, where the water is between 300 and 750 feet deep, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Jim McPherson. On Sunday, a Kenya Airways flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after take off from Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The Airbus 310 carried 10 crew members and 169 passengers. At least 10 people survived. Last Oct. 31, EgyptAir Flight 990 plummeted into the ocean 60 miles south of the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. All 217 people aboard the Boeing 767 were killed.
