The experiments, during the 1950s and '60s, were based on long experience with animals showing that anthrax often becomes more virulent after infecting an animal and growing in its body, according to experts on the bacteria and scientific studies published at the time. Former Army scientists say the anthrax strain used to make weapons was replaced at least once, and possibly three times, with more potent anthrax that had grown in the workers' bodies. But some of the key scientists who did the work more than four decades ago are dead, and records are classified, contradictory or nonexistent, so it is difficult to establish with certainty the details of what happened. The use of human accident victims to boost the killing power of the nation's germ arsenal is a macabre footnote to a top-secret program designed to destroy enemy troops with such exotic weapons as botulism, smallpox, plague and paralytic shellfish poison. The offensive bioweapons program was launched during World War II and ended by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969. Today, after a few grams of mailed anthrax have killed five people, sickened 13 others and disrupted the postal system and government, the old program's gruesome potential for destruction seems unimaginable. But at the time, fearing correctly that the Soviet Union had an even larger bioweapons program, Army scientists were driven to come up with more and more lethal disease strains. Any deadly diseases, anywhere in the world, we'd go and collect a sample, said Bill Walter, 76, who worked in the weapons program from 1951 until it closed. Walter was involved in anthrax production from selection of seed stock to the dry, deadly spore powder ready to be loaded into a bomb; his final job was as principal investigator in a lab that studied anthrax and other powder weapons. Walter believes the original weapons strain of anthrax, a variety called Vollum after the British scientist who isolated it, was upgraded with bacteria collected from three Detrick workers who were accidentally infected. Two of them died. His recollection is supported by another veteran of the anthrax program, 84-year-old James R.E. Smith. A third bioweapons veteran, William C. Patrick III, confirms two of the cases but says he is not sure about the third. Anthrax gets stronger as it goes through a human host, said Walter, now retired in Florida. So we got pulmonary [lung] spores from Bill Boyles and Joel Willard. And finally we got it from Lefty Kreh's finger. William A. Boyles, a 46-year-old microbiologist, inhaled anthrax spores on the job in 1951 and died a few days later. Seven years after that, Joel E. Willard, 53, an electrician who worked in the hot areas where animals were dosed with deadly germs, died of the same inhalational form of the disease. The third anthrax victim, Bernard Lefty Kreh, was a plant operator who spent night shifts in a biohazard suit, breathing air from a tube on the wall, using a kitchen spatula to scrape the anthrax mud off the inside of a centrifuge. One day in the late '50s or early '60s, his finger swelled to the size of a sausage with a cutaneous, or skin, anthrax infection. Kreh went on to become a nationally known outdoors writer and expert on fly fishing. He did not know that the bacteria that had put him in Fort Detrick's hospital for a month had gone on to another life, too - as a sub-strain of anthrax bearing his initials. We called it 'LK' - that's what we'd put on the log sheets for each run, Walter said. A run was an 1,800-gallon batch of anthrax mixture, grown in one of the 40-foot- high fermenters inside Building 470, which stands empty at Detrick, its demolition planned. Lefty's strain was rather easy to detect, Walter said. When a colony of bacteria grew on growth medium, he recalled, it came out like a little comma, perfectly spherical. Surprised by his role Orley R. Bourland Jr., 75, who worked as a plant manager, said anthrax from Kreh's finger was isolated and designated BVK-1, for Bernard Victor Kreh. The warning came in the context of a discussion about the recent deportation of five Israelis who were detained on Sept. 11 for suspicious behavior." America clears Saddam of links to anthrax and aircraft attacks
AMERICAN investigators have abandoned attempts to link Saddam
Hussein, the Iraqi leader, to anthrax attacks that killed five
people, complicating President George W Bushs drive to overthrow the
Baghdad regime, write James Clark and Tony Allen-Mills.
After weeks of intensive study by scientists and intelligence
agencies, no evidence has been found of an Iraqi connection, and the
attacks are unlikely to be used as a motive for any future American
assault on Saddam, US officials indicated yesterday.
Washington has also concluded that Baghdad had nothing to do with the
September 11 attacks orchestrated by Osama Bin Laden.
The absence of an Iraqi smoking gun that would justify an early
attack on Saddam is stirring fierce debate in Washington as the
Pentagon, State Department and CIA draw up options for extending the
international war agai
nst terrorism.
Several influential figures in the Bush administration have warned that Saddams
notorious programme of building weapons of mass destruction remains a threat to
American security.
The president has made clear that the war on terror is not just a war on the people
behind September 11, a senior administration source said last week.
Bush himself gave a warning last week that peace was not yet at hand. Next year will
be a war year as well, because were going to continue to hunt down these Al-Qaeda
people, he said.
Although no final decision has yet been taken to extend the war to Baghdad, Bush has
ordered the CIA to present him with a list of options for toppling Saddam. The agency
has advised the president to set a deadline for Sa
ddam to allow United Nations weapons inspectors back into Iraq, intelligence sources
said.
If the deadline is not met, Bush would have the pretext for a renewal of American
bombing of Iraq, with the first attacks likely to strike at production sites for
weapons of mass destruction.
Some US officials, however, are concerned that the political and diplomatic
foundations of Bushs campaign against international terrorism will be undermined if
Iraq is attacked. These officials believe the moral outrage
that united the world against Bin Laden would dissolve if America were seen to be
settling old scores.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, and Gerhard Schröder, the German chancellor,
both warned Bush last week against extending the war to Iraq.
American officials now believe that the anthrax in the US came from a domestic source,
and could have been spread by a disgruntled scientist or even by somebody with shares
in the company that makes the antibiotics used t
o fight it.
The governments of both Yemen and Somalia have begun cracking down on Al-Qaeda
activities since both countries were identified as potential American targets.
A new front is also opening in the Philippines, where US special
forces are to help local troops tackle Muslim rebels. At least 100
commandos are heading for the Philippines to begin what one Pentagon
official described as the largest and most comprehensive training
programme undertaken in Asia in recent years.

Jews worry that baseless´ report
on 9/11 could be a blow to Israel

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (JTA) American Jews have been complaining that
a four-part series on Fox News last week insinuated that Israeli
intelligence had foreknowledge of the Sept. 11 terror attacks but
didn´t tell American authorities.
Israeli officials have called the stories totally baseless, and the
reports were not picked up by other media outlets. Still, some
American Jews are concerned the report will foster negative images of
Israel that they feared in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.
In the conspiracy media world and the hate groups, its going to have
lots of legs, said Alex Safian, associate director of the Committee
for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, or CAMERA.
The series, reported by Carl Cameron in Washington, alleges that
Israeli intelligence may have had foreknowledge of the Al Qaida
terrorist attacks because Israelis have been spying on the movements
of Arabs in the United
States.
There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9/11 attacks, but
investigators suspect that the Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the
attacks and not shared it, Cameron said in the first segme
nt of the series. A highly placed investigator said there are tie-ins.´
Israeli officials denied the spying charges, and said that most of the Israelis
rounded up after the Sept. 11 attacks were held for minor visa infractions and have
since been released.
Later parts of the series accuse an Israeli telecommunications company, Amdocs Ltd.,
of not protecting private call records and billing data, which Fox said could have
hindered the American investigation into the terroris
t attacks.
A second Israeli telecommunications firm, Comverse Infosys, is accused of illegal
moves in providing private phone information to the Israeli government.
Critics say the pieces offer no on-the-record sources and rely heavily on innuendo and
hypothesis.
Safian cites one example, in which Cameron says the U.S. government looked at Amdocs
when trying to determine the cause of leaks in a Los Angeles drug investigation of
suspects linked to Israeli organized crime.
What the reporter fails to mention, Safian says, is that someone unrelated to Amdocs
later pleaded guilty to leaking the information.
Other charges against Fox News which Jewish groups felt generally has been fair in
its reportage on Israel is that the station did not seek on-camera comments or
rebuttals from Israeli officials or the companies cited
, and that it recycled previously aired stories.
However, American Jewish and Israeli officials are baffled about what might have led
Fox or Cameron to pursue so controversial a story on the basis of evidence they regard
as so flimsy.
Jewish groups that have spoken to reporters following up on Cameron´s charges have
been told that American government sources have debunked the allegations. Virtually no
other American media organization has run a piece o
n the Fox allegations a sign that the story lacks merit, Jewish leaders say.
A Fox News spokesman said, We stand by the story, but would not go into further
detail.
American Jewish leaders and Israeli officials said they are holding conversations with
Fox News representatives, but refused to elaborate.
Jewish organizations have been receiving frantic calls from Jews concerned that the
reports may fuel anti-Semitism. In the first days after the Sept. 11 attacks, Jewish
organizations feared attempts to link the attacks, a
nd Al Qaida´s hatred of the United States, to U.S. support for Israel.
While such linkage has been successfully refuted, those fears have been reawakened by
the Fox report.
Fox comes to the conclusion that if maybe the Israelis spied, they had the
information and didn´t share it, said Abraham Foxman, national director of the
Anti-Defamation League. That´s insidious. It almost said the I
sraelis were responsible for what happened.
Foxman said the report falls just one step below Arab claims that Israel was
responsible for the terrorist attacks. So far, there is no evidence that Arab
countries or groups are incorporating the report into their anti
-Israel propaganda.
Most Jewish organizations have chosen not to issue formal statements about the Fox
News report for fear that it would give the allegations undue exposure.
When a serious news outlet decides to run with a story that is factually incorrect, I
think that more public damage is ultimately going to be done to the reputation of that
news outlet than the target of the story, said
Mark Regev, spokesman for the Israeli embassy in Washington.

The FBI has begun a massive manhunt in the region around Fargo, North Dakota. The fugitive, federal officials report, is a short, fat Caucasian man with a long white beard. He can be easily spotted, they say, because hes dressed all in red. They also say that he answers to the name Kris, but theyre not sure if that is his real name or just an alias. In this effort, the FBI has also turned to some outside help. The ADL, the ACLU and the People for the American Way have all sent experts to assist in the capture of the white-bearded fugitive. Said Abe Foxman, chairman of the ADL, We have a unique talent for hunting down figures just like the suspect, especially around this time of year, and seeing to it that theyre put away, well out of the publics eye. This guys no different. If hes out there, well find him and bringem down. Foxman later addressed his troops, telling th em, Your fugitives name is Kris Kringle. Other groups, however, are not being so cooperative. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a protest with the Defense Department. A PETA spokesperson claimed the organization was deeply offended by t he Air Forces destruction of the sleds reindeer. Said spokesperson Lola Flufflebeam: Obviously, the paramount tragedy in this whole incident are the reindeer. Did they have to die? Flying reindeer are a rarity. Their d eaths cannot be undone. Also reported dead are fifteen children who were crushed in an orphanage by the falling reindeer carcasses. Ms. Flufflebeam declined to officially comment on this, saying her organization needed t o investigate the matter more fully before expressing regret. She did say on the side, though, that it was a pity, because one would think that a childs body should provide enough cushion to break a reindeers fall. Fina lly, the PETA representative chided the Air Force for their mistreatment of the reindeers remains: We are aghast that the Air Force would so disrespectfully give the carcasses to homeless people in exchange for their s queegeeing aircraft windshields. Have they no shame? Air Force spokesman Lt. John Schaeffer later confirmed that, indeed, they have no shame. This is particularly true, he added, when they are on leave in the Philippine s. He also issued an apology to the family of Bill Winnamaker, one of the aforementioned homeless persons who fell asleep in the intake of the F-15 he was cleaning. Apparently, the start-up was a bit rougher than normal, but the sterno in Winnamakers carcass made for excellent engine performance later. Defense Department officials are now investigating the possibilities of developing a new after-bummer fighter, and New York City Mayor Rudolph Guliani promises his city can provide all fuel supplies the Air Force would need. Schaeffer also allayed earlier concerns about the alleged terrorist being armed with nuclear material. That's right, as much as he might like to be, Usama bin Laden is simply not the biggest threat to American freedom on Earth. Sure, he can terrorize us and, on rare occasion, he can kill us. Make no mistake; Sept. 11 was a disgusting and horrific display of one desperate, deluded fanatic's attempt to destroy America. But despite the horrific toll those attacks took, in many ways, it utterly failed because it drew Americans together in a way we haven't seen in ages. The fact is, bin Laden, despite all his efforts, doesn't have the ability to destroy the very fabric of American freedom. It is for this reason he must take a backseat to other enemies of our freedom, enemies who are far more capable of destroying our precious liberty. Just who is number one, you ask? Who is the biggest, most dangerous enemy to our freedom? Well, he's definitely not a starving, backward jihadi freezing his ass off in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan. No, this enemy of our freedom lives right here in the good old U S of A, and for his dastardly work draws a paycheck from our tax dollars that is likely worth more than the annual salaries of all of your faithful Texas Mercury writers put together. I am, of course, referring to the senior senator from New York, the despicable Charles Schumer. Riding on the wave of hysteria generated by Sept. 11, he is pushing a bill that will grant him what was earlier denied him by Attorney General John Ashcroft, a comprehensive list of gun owners, what they own, and where they live. Upon taking office, Ashcroft was roundly criticized by the senator for upholding the law, which stated that reports generated by the National Instant Check System couldn't be kept for longer than 24 hours. The Reno Justice Department had been illegally keeping the records much longer than that, turning the NICS into a de- facto national gun registry. Ashcroft's just and swift squashing of this practice outraged gun-grabbers from the Left, most notably Schumer. So, as promised, he's pushing a bill called the Use NICS in Terror Investigations Act, the language of which makes no reference to terror investigations and puts no limits on what government agencies can use the records generated by NICS and for what purposes. It is, in a nutshell, a national gun registration plan and history teaches us national gun registries always lead to national gun confiscations. This is precisely why Schumer is far more dangerous t o our liberties than Usama bin Laden could ever hope to be. Bin Laden's hatred of our freedoms is impotent, whereas Schumer is free to act on that disdain in a more meaningful way, a way that could actually destroy our li berties by taking from us the only means we have to safeguard them: our firearms. Now, gun-grabbers and fence sitters on the Second Amendment will think I've gone a bit far in accusing Schumer of being a bigger threat to our freedom than bin Laden. Well friends, history has this infuriating habit of repeating itself. By 1939 Adolph Hitler had every privately owned firearm in Germany listed on a national registry. Shortly thereafter there were no privately owned firearms in the hands of the German people. Soon after that undesirable Germans were herded onto railcars bound for extermination camps. With no firearms to shoot back at the brownshirts, German Jews and other persecuted people were powerless to resist. Don't think it can happen here? Must be nice to be such an optimist. As for me, I'll bank on my Smith Wesson and my Remington long before I count on the good na ture of people like Charles Schumer, who, by the way, doesn't have one. Now, there are two plausible explanations why Schumer wants a national registry of gun owners. One would be the stated purpose of the bill, to better assist law-enforcement with the apprehension of violent criminals and terrorists who use firearms in the commission of a crime (never mind that no Islamist terrorist has ever used a firearm in the commission of a crime i n the United States). The other reason would be that it's impossible to dispatch members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to collect privately owned firearms without a list to work with. We all know the latt er is the wet dream of Schumer, Ed Kennedy, Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and the other avowed gun-grabbers in the Senate and their counterparts in the house. Let us naively assume, however, that the former is the real reason Schumer wants a national firearm owner registry. December 22, 2001 -- Dunne's tale of Chandra fate
MISSING intern Chandra Levy is dead, and shortly after she went
missing on April 30, her body was dumped over the Atlantic Ocean,
according to Vanity Fair sleuth Dominick Dunne.
On Thursday night, Dunne was a guest on Westwood One radio host Laura
Ingraham's show. Dunne said that although Rep. Gary Condit - relieved
to be out of the spotlight after Sept. 11 - is running for re-
election in California, he is still under suspicion in the Levy case.
Dunne said on the air that he was working with the FBI on the case and has uncovered
new leads which show that Levy may have stumbled into a noxious ring of prostitution,
sex slaves and Middle Eastern sheiks in Washingt
on, D.C., which might have contributed to her disappearance.
Dunne - who has a habit of finding the most bizarre witnesses to violent crimes -
claimed he was contacted this fall by a world-renowned American horse-whisperer, who
helps prepare racehorses for Middle Eastern business
men.
According to Dunne, the horse expert met an impeccably dressed, well-connected Middle
Eastern man this summer who claimed to have seen Levy being put on a plane after her
disappearance.
Described as a procurer of young women for Middle Eastern diplomats in Washington,
the man told Dunne's American source that on or after April 30, he saw Levy being put
on a private jet, surrounded by five men, but she
wasn't walking.
The Middle Easterner, whom the FBI is trying to identify, supposedly said, Rep. Gary
Condit was a frequent guest at the Middle Eastern embassies in Washington where young
women would be brought for nocturnal pleasures.
The procurer supposedly told Dunne's contact that some time before April 30, Condit
confided to one of his Middle Eastern friends that he had been involved with a woman
and wanted to end it, but that she was threatening
to talk. According to the second-hand account, an exasperated Condit allegedly said,
She's driving me crazy.
Dunne's source was convinced that Condit created the atmosphere that
led to Chandra's disappearance.
Dunne had so much faith in his source that he even traveled to Dubai
several months ago to catch the horse races and meet with the
mysterious Arab - but the man never showed.
The FBI, which had previously described the case as cold, is now
working to track down the names and whereabouts of the individuals in
Dunne's tale. Neither Condit's office nor Dunne returned calls by
press time.

Consider a formerly secret CIA assessment, Israel: Foreign Intelligence and Security Services, dated March 1979, which reported that it is a long-standing policy for Israeli intelligence to disguise Jews as Arabs: One of the established goals of the intelligence and security services is that each officer be fluent in Arabic. A nine-month, intensive Arabic language course is given annually . . . to students . . . As further training, these Mossad officers work in the [Israeli-controlled Arab lands] for two years to sharpen their language skills. . . . Many Israelis have come from Arab countries where they were born and educated and appear more Arab than Israeli . . . By forging passports and identity documents of Arab and western countries and providing sound background legends and cover, Mossad has successfully sent into Egypt and other Arab countries Israelis disguised and documented as Arabs or citizens of European countries. . . . These persons are also useful for their ability to pass completely for a citizen of the nation in question. The Israeli talent for counterfeiting or forging foreign passports and documents ably supports the agent’s authenticity. Pulitzer Prize-winner Jack Anderson, a supporter of Israel, wrote on Sept. 17, 1972 that: Israeli agents—immigrants whose families had lived in Arab lands for generations—have a perfect knowledge of Arab dialects and customs. They have been able to infiltrate Arab governments with ease. On Sept, 29, 1998, Yossi Melman, writing in Israel’s Ha’aretz, revealed that: Shin Bet agents, who worked undercover in the Israeli-Arab sector in the 1950s, went as far as to marry Muslim women and have children with them, in an attempt to continue their mission without raising suspicion. In fact, serious questions have been raised about the identities of the Sept. 11 “Arab hijackers.” While the media reported the ringleader’s passport conveniently landed atop rubble eight blocks from “Ground Zero,” The Orlando Sentinel also reported that at least four men identified as hijackers are not dead and had nothing to do with the attacks. In The New Yorker on Oct. 8, Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh pointed out: Many of the investigators believe that some of the initial clues about the terrorists’ identities and preparations, such as flight manuals, were meant to be found. A former high-level intelligence official told me, “Whatever trail was left was left deliberately—for the FBI to chase.” Why Arabs would plant evidence implicating their own is a point mainstream media chooses not to address. Nor has the media ever ballyhooed the “hero” who tipped off the FBI where the hijackers’ car (conveniently filled with “evidence”) was parked. And for those who would doubt that Israel would endanger American Jews via terrorism, consider this: hard-line Israelis are willing to kill Jews if it means assuring Israel’s survival. On his first day in the job, the Taliban commander appointed to run the orphanage in place of Salim showed an interest in three teenage orphans. They were very pretty girls, said Salim. Fereshta was 18, a talented seamstress, Maleha was 17 and Mariam just 15. The next day they were gone. The commander had taken the women as concubines for his brother and two other relatives. The Taliban didnt care about orphans, said Salim. They were just loot. They were forcibly married. There was nothing anybody could do. A tale of unusual suffering has come to light in Kabul, where hundreds of women were abducted, forcibly married, raped or sold into sexual slavery by Taliban fighters. Many are still missing. Orphans were easy prey. The girls had no families to protect them, said Roma, who teaches sewing at the orphanage, a grim building in a bomb-ravaged part of Kabul. They had no choice but to go with these men. Many more girls were snatched from their homes. One was Shabnam, the sister-in-law of a 32-year-old baker called Mohamed Islamodin. If I can find the Taliban commander who took her, I will kill him, he said. We think of her all the time. All her things are still here in the house. We dream she will come back to us. Two years ago the family heard that Shabnam had become the property of a top Taliban commander with whom she was living in Kabul. After the Taliban fled Kabul, Islamodin went to the house where Shabnam had been. It was empty and there was no sign of her. Perhaps they are in Pakistan or another province, he said. Our first priority is to find her. Then we must take revenge. Mohamed Qasim, a general in the alliance of forces that led the assault to overthrow the Taliban, said he believed that up to 1,000 women had been abducted. He said many were kept as concubines and some were sold as sex slaves to Arabs through the terrorist network of Al-Qaeda. We think many of these women were killed or are no longer in Afghanistan, said Qasim. But we will do our best to find them. The abductions are evidence of the startling hypocrisy of the Taliban regime and its mullahs, who seemed obsessed with protecting womens virtue. It was said that Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban leader, began his revolt against the government in 1994 in outrage at the rape of two women by soldiers. He captured the men and hanged them from the barrel of their tank. In reality, the zeal of the religious police masked greater abuses by illiterate troops who claimed women as sexual trophies. Roholla Stanikzai, a magistrate under the Taliban, recalls at least 20 cases in which officials were accused of raping women in Kabul. One case involved a senior commander who tied up a 13-year-old neighbour and forced himself on her with the help of a female accomplice. The girls mother complained to police. The accomplice was imprisoned, but the commander was not even questioned. Islamodin claimed most of the victims had been families with roots in northern Afghanistan, a hotbed of resistance to Taliban rule. They wanted to plant their seed in our women so they would not have to face another hostile generation fighting them from the north. By all accounts, Taliban soldiers from Omars southern Pashtun stronghold were encouraged to seek northern Tajik brides in Kabul. They would offer money, as is customary, to the parents of their intended bride. It was unwise to refuse such proposals. Yet many did and paid for it.
