Tirupati ward boundaries are available from Swachh Bharat Mission Urban at
https://github.com/ramSeraph/indian_admin_boundaries/releases/download/urban/SBM_Wards.geojsonl.7z
.
That file has wards for most of the country. You will need to filter out
Tirupati ones.
It is viewable here -

Any help would be really appreciated.

[datameet] OpenStreetMap Bengaluru Mapping Party

2024-05-10 Thread Vivek Matthew
Hello everyone,

OpenStreetMap Bengaluru will be hosting a mapping party in Malleshwaram,
Bengaluru, this Sunday.

For those unfamiliar with what an OpenStreetMap mapping party is, it's an
event where a group of us get together to explore an area and map it by
adding data to OpenStreetMap, using a mobile app. Aman who helped organize
one of the first OpenStreetMap Bengaluru mapping parties, wrote a blog post
about that event:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/aman_bagrecha/diary/402347

If this sounds interesting to you, the next mapping party is happening this
Sunday:

* Date: 12th May 2024 (Sunday)
* Time: 09:00AM - 11:30AM (Mapping, followed by dosa at CTR)
* Meeting Point: Sankey Tank, at the gazebo near Sampige Road
(https://omaps.app/8xx2EQUmjF/Shelter)

For event updates, do join the OpenStreetMap Bengaluru group:

* Telegram: https://t.me/OSM_BLR
* Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#OSM_BLR:matrix.org

If you'd like to participate and receive event updates, but are not on
Telegram or Matrix, please do drop me a private mail so that I can send you
event updates or in case you want any further details.

Regards,
Vivek

[datameet] Webinar: Working with Women Farmers and Smallholders in Using Earth Observation Data

2024-05-10 Thread Amitangshu
Dear All,

Sharing with everyone an invitation to the first episode of a Webinar
Series “Watering the Margins” from IHE Delft Institute for Water Education,
the Netherlands.

The first episode on 14th May 2024 (9:30 A.M-11:00 A.M CEST) will bring
together activists and researchers to discuss concerns of equity in the
generation and use of earth observation data in agriculture.

Many agriculture and water management projects attempting to provide
remotely sensed hydro-agroecological data to farmers engage exclusively
with large landholders. Typically, the farmers are men from the dominant
class, caste, and ethnic groups. The exclusion of women farmers,
smallholders, share-croppers, and marginal farmers from such programs
deepens the knowledge and resource divide. Moreover, such engagements often
aimed at the transfer of information offer very little space for
acknowledging knowledge traditions of marginal farming communities.

The webinar brings together Seema Kulkarni from India (National
Facilitation Team member of Forum for Women Farmers Rights, India, and
core member of the Feminist Policy Collective), Bancy Mati [Founder
Chairperson of the Association of Irrigation Acceleration Platform (AIAP)
and Professor at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
(JKUAT)] Kenya, and Marloes Mul (Associate Professor, Water Resource
Management, IHE Delft) the Netherlands. They will share their insights on
working with marginalized farmers and discuss the socio-technical
challenges to making earth observation data useful for smallholders.

The link to the registration page : t.ly/t0cx3

Do join us, if it is of interest, and also feel free to circulate the
invitation.

Regards

Amitangshu

[datameet] Informal DataMeet-up at Starbucks on Church Street/Bengaluru this Friday!

2024-05-07 Thread Thejesh GN
Hi everyone,
I'm excited to extend an invitation to an informal meetup happening this
Friday at Starbucks on Church Street. We'll be gathering at 6:00 PM for
about an hour to chat, share ideas, and discuss some interesting topics.

Rukmini will be kicking off the discussion by shedding light on
DataForIndia, a fascinating initiative focused on leveraging data for
meaningful insights.

Following that, I'll be diving into a discussion about surveillance in
Bengaluru, exploring its implications and potential challenges.

But that's not all! We're also open to discussing any other open
data-related projects or work that you're passionate about. This meetup is
a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and exchange
thoughts and ideas.

Here are the details:

*Date:* Friday, 10th May *Time:* 6:00 PM *Location:* Starbucks on Church
Street, Bengaluru

Feel free to bring along any colleagues or friends who might be interested.
The more, the merrier!

Looking forward to seeing you all there for what promises to be an engaging
and enriching conversation.

Best regards,
Thej

Any help to locate them would be of great value.

[datameet] Seeking District-Level Data on Rice and Millet Land Use in India

2024-05-01 Thread Linfeng Li
Hi all,

I'm writing to ask for pointers on Rice% and Millet% land-use data for all
districts in India.

Currently, for rice, I have identified a potential source from the article "New
district-level maps of rice cropping in India
<https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378429006000268#aep-article-footnote-id8>"

that leads to the India Rice Cropping Maps
<https://eos-earthdata.sr.unh.edu/data/data46.jsp> on EOS Earthdata
<https://eos-earthdata.sr.unh.edu/data/>. According to the data guide
<https://eos-earthdata.sr.unh.edu/data/dataGuides/india_crops_dg.pdf>, it
provides specific data on plant rotation land use for both rice and millet
from the late 1990s or early 2000s.

*Question 1:* Can this source be reliably used for calculating both Rice%
and Millet% given the coverage of millet as a crop type in the land
rotation data?

*Question 2:* Is there a more recent data source available for agricultural
land use at the district level?

Additionally, I have received a historical dataset titled "India Districts
1966.xlsx", which appears to be manually encoded from survey books found in
a university library, and includes columns such as District1966,
DistTotalRiceCultivatedArea1966, and TotalCultivatedArea1966.

*Question 3:* Has anyone also come across this data, and know the actual
source of it?

*Question 4:* Does anyone know of a similar dataset that includes data on
millet percentages from the 1960s or earlier?

Thank you for any guidance or pointers you can provide.

All the best,

-Linfeng

DOCV being 4 June would mean Date of Counting Votes

LDFN would mean Last Date For Nomination

Re: [datameet] Elections 2024 mapping

2024-04-26 Thread Nikhil VJ
Thanks Arun!

Made a map!

https://server.nikhilvj.co.in/elections24/election2024-map.html

Used the same color scheme as on ECI's own map :
https://elections24.eci.gov.in/img/map.png

Screenshot:

Source code: https://github.com/answerquest/india-elections2024-map

Made it using folium lib in python this time.

Would anybody know what these attributes mean:

DOA example: 16-3-2024(Saturday)
DOIN example: 20-3-2024(Wednesday)
LDFN example: 27-3-2024(Wednesday)
DSN example: 28-3-2024(Thursday)
LDWC example: 30-3-2024(Saturday)
DOCV example: 4-6-2024(Tuesday)

Re: [datameet] Re: LGD codes = Census 2011 codes?

2024-04-26 Thread शरच्चंद्र लेले
Thanks, Sarvesh. So if the LGD code is the same as Census 2011 (which is
also a 6 digit code), then there is no room to add any additional digit
for hamlets within a revenue village...

Regarding Gatishakti: i looked up the portal, and there is nothing there
:-) I could not get into any of the statewise portals or anything. So
what GIS layers they have etc I have no idea :-)

[datameet] Elections 2024 mapping

2024-04-26 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi,
Some sharings, queries and call for information on elections 2024 (a bit
late!)

*1. Have the Parliamentary Constituencies seen any changes in their
delimitations after 2019 elections?*

Related links:
Shapes:
https://github.com/datameet/maps/tree/master/parliamentary-constituencies
You can download just the folder using :
https://download-directory.github.io/

For comparing with official ECI release:
ECI press notes page : https://elections24.eci.gov.in/eci-updates.html
There, at the bottom "General Election Schedule" opens a PDF which starts
showing maps from pg59 onwards. direct link which might not directly open
<https://elections24.eci.gov.in/docs/press-note-no-23.pdf>

I've made high-res images of these pages and saved them here:
https://server.nikhilvj.co.in/elections24/
Full India map from the ECI's PDF :
https://server.nikhilvj.co.in/elections24/p-059-india-all-PCs-map.png

J : I know there's changes. If anyone can share the new shapes of J
PCs, would be really helpful.

*2. Is there an interactive map of the Parliamentary Constiuencies, with
election dates and other info?*

If *not*, then one crowd-sourcing appeal:
a. Open this google spreadsheet and request editing access (I'll approve if
you don't sound like a spammer), or just do commenting:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zj39sgQNqxN_iFRKDZ-itkJIZiELExpjwU_xB_6_C84/edit?usp=sharing

b. Using the PDF mentioned above, find in the voting (also called
"polling") date for the constituency, and paste it into this sheet. You can
start from pg.63 onwards..
Some states are happening all at-a-go so those should be easier to tag.

If yes, then pls ignore a & b and just share link to the interactive map,
thanks much!

*How filling the google spreadsheet can help:*
I have shapefile with these columns. I can merge back in the election dates
and publish the map.

Here's a raw version without the dates:
https://server.nikhilvj.co.in/elections24/2019-PCs-simp1.html

Disclaimer : it's directly a render of the datameet 2019 PCs data, with a
100meter simplification done to reduce size. there are gaps in the shape
data and some areas left out. That doesn't mean those folks can't vote, pls
don't take it that way.

Re: [datameet] Bangalore road widths

2024-04-19 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi, if there are folks out there who're thinking about mapping this
on-ground, then sharing some unsolicited and untested ideas:

A real-world requirement for many logistics / transport folks is : which of
the roads are too narrow to send my truck / 4-wheeler / tempo / e-rickshaw
through?
And frankly the people living there may also appreciate if map routers
stopped sending wide bodied vehicles through their lanes.

So if you aim at that, then you can drop all the wide roads from your task
list and focus on just the narrow ones. That dataset can be built by
selective querying of OSM data. See:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:highway

Then, in many cases it might not be the whole stretch of road, but just the
narrowest bottleneck on it that matters, as that point will decide what can
(or rather shouldn't) pass through.
So, mapping of just the narrowest points instead of lengths also cuts down
your task load and reduces the scale, complexity and skill requirements for
your operations considerably. One can take a simple photo of the point with
geo-tagging on instead of having to capture data at every X meters etc.

I found this map from KSRSAC.
https://data.opencity.in/dataset/bengaluru-road-width-map

Many are proposed road widths, especially in outer areas. But the ones in
the centre of the city should be closer to reality. This data is from the
scrapped RMP 2031.

publications. I wish to digitize them as a public service. I found that the
following python package is pretty efficient at doing this job:

Obviously, this is voluntary work.

Re: [datameet] Block Boundary

2024-04-08 Thread Keshav Bajaj
Hello Arulalan,

I am not sure whether the file you uploaded is for CD Blocks or Tehsils.
However, I am assuming that it is for Tehsils in Shimla District of
Himachal Pradesh. As per the file, Jubbal and Kotkhai are considered as two
different blocks. But according to the 2011 census, Jubbal-Kotkhai is the
same block. However, Jubbal and Kotkhai are considered as two different
Tehsils in the census.

Similarly, there is an issue with Tyuni and Chakrata Tehsils in Dehradun
District, Uttarakhand. Can you please let me know where I can find the
required information?

[datameet] Meteorological Department (IMD) APIs

2024-04-06 Thread Dilawar Singh
Hi,

It looks like the Meteorological Department has some public APIs
(https://mausam.imd.gov.in/imd_latest/contents/api.pdf). The document is
silent on authorization etc.

Has anyone played with them already? If yes, is there a community resource,
e.g., library, etc., that can access data via them?

best,
   Dilawar

[datameet] Crop Yield Datasets for India

2024-04-01 Thread Daniel
Dear Datameet team,

I have just started a new project for tracking Crop Yields in Indian States.

Request you all to guide me so that I can gather statewise Crop Yield
Datasets.
Mainly looking at these metrics: Temperature, Humidity, Soil_moisture, Crop
yield.

Any repositories or apis where this is available?
Hoping for a favorable reply.

Yours truly,

Daniel Singh

[datameet] Daily AQI Bulletins 2015-2023

2024-03-29 Thread Dammalapati Sai Krishna
Hi air quality and climate researchers,

CPCB releases daily AQI Bulletins data. You can find this data for each
city from 2015 to 2023 on this page - Link https://github.com/urbanemissions-info/AQI_bulletins>.

The CSV file contains (available) day-wise city-average AQI value, AQI
category, and conditional pollutant information and the image is a calendar
plot of the AQI values, along with the average number of stations reporting
AQI value in each year.

Github repo for parsing CPCB PDF bulletins is here: Link

[datameet] New Issue of the PA Update: February 2024, No. 167

2024-03-25 Thread Pankaj Sekhsaria
ates and regions. It is difficult to say how much the media
reports on them but one can assume safely there is an imbalance due to
multiple reasons. Surely all that is happening in all the PAs cannot be
reported given the challenges and various limitations. There is also the
limitation of the PA Update itself - a 24-page newsletter, published
every two months by a small team can only do this much. The PA Update is
finally a small subset of the media universe and can provide only a
small window into both, conservation issues in PAs as also the
priorities of the media.
It is with the above in mind that we decided to experiment this time
and create 'A one newspaper Protected Area Update'. It is literally
that. This issue of the PA Update is based exclusively on news published
over two months in just one newspaper - The Telegraph. And there are two
broad inferences that can be drawn from what you will see and read in
the pages that follow. We realised, first and foremost, that there is so
much media interest and reporting on issues of wildlife and PAs that one
issue of this newsletter can easily be crafted from just one such
newspaper. The oft-repeated concern that the media does not give enough
importance to wildlife and conservation could/should perhaps be laid to
rest. More is welcome for sure, but there is quite a lot already out there.
The second key insight is that geography matters. It appears to matter
hugely, in fact. Nearly half the stories carried this time are from West
Bengal alone and nearly 80% of the PA Update is from the eastern and
north eastern part of the country - states like Arunachal Pradesh,
Sikkim and Odisha. This is clearly not a coincidence considering the
newspaper we have sourced the stories from is The Telegraph. We also see
a prominent focus on stories related to elephants - mostly incidents
related to conflict - a function perhaps of the landscape and the key
issues being experienced there.
One obvious learning from this experiment is that a single PA Update is
clearly not enough. It cannot not do justice to the volume and diversity
of what is otherwise easily available as information and insight to
understand the country's conservation landscape. It suggests we need
more and varied kinds of efforts in this direction. Change one axis and
a different picture appears to emerge. What would this picture be, for
instance, if we were to use a newspaper from another geography of the
country, say the south? Or a South Asia PA Update minus India? Or a
newsletter with a focus on just one state or a bio-region? What if we
looked at the non-English media of a particular region - say Odia or
Bengali or Kannada? And what would happen if we start to look at the
world of social media and the tsunami of information that comes from there?
Would the world of wildlife and conservation look very different? Or
just marginally? Or not at all? We won't know until we try and these
might be interesting experiments worth attempting. The PA Update could
be the template, or some other structure could be thought of. Either way
there are interesting possibilities waiting for us around the corner.

[datameet] Shapefiles of 2024 parliamentary constituencies

2024-03-21 Thread Jin Wu
Hi everyone!

Appreciate all the great work you all have contributed to the group. Cannot
say enough how helpful these questions & conversations have been.

Does anyone in this group knows whether ECI publishes shapefiles for the
latest parliamentary constituencies? Have been looking at the pdf they
shared for the 2024 general election and noticed some constituency
boundaries seem to have changed.

Any tip on where we could possibly find it would be super helpful.

Thank you so much!
Jin

2024-03-21 Thread 'Shiv Hastawala' via datameet
Hi Ravi

I'm not entirely aware of a bank branch data set that comes with lat-long
info. However, the SHRUG data thatI alluded to includes PIN codes of
branches. So you can merge that data with the following PIN code map to get
approximate locations of bank branches:
https://github.com/justinelliotmeyers/INDIA_PINCODES

Thanks and regards.

Hi Shiv and Atanu,
Thanks for sharing the info on banks but I am looking for lat-long (along

can be a shapefile (or any geometry file) or just a CSV with lat-long and
bank name.

I hope I am not missing anything in your email.

Re: [External Email] [datameet] Request: Input Use Survey 2016-17

2024-03-20 Thread 'Shiv Hastawala' via datameet
Hi Goutham

I tried accessing the archived versions of the older input survey website
on web.archive.org (a website that automatically and randomly archives
webpage over the internet) thinking that maybe one could get access to the
data from there. But unfortunately, the data on that old website was
available on a dynamic webpage (i.e. the user needed to enter a query and
then the data would be returned) because of which no version of the actual
data could be archived.

I think, going forward, it is a suggestion to everyone on this group that
whenever and wherever you see useful public data sets like this behind
dynamic web pages on Indian government websites, please extract them and
archive them on github or some other data repository (this isn't something
new and has been done for several other data sets in the past). Such data
sets (especially micro data at the district level, like the input survey)
are extremely useful for research purposes and must remain publicly
accessible. But because government websites can't really be relied upon, it
is our responsibility as data enthusiasts to help them remain publicly
accessible.

As for the input survey, since the new website is almost exactly the same
as the old one, my guess is that their links to the data set are not
working right now because they are in a phase of migration and most
probably this is a temporary friction. But whenever that gets resolved,
please seriously consider archiving all waves of their data set for future
public use, because such a situation can arise again.

Thanks and regards.

Yours sincerely

On this webpage, search for the term 'bank' and you will get the data. This
data is at the bank branch level by village. The village names etc are
available in the 'core keys' file.

Thanks and regards.

[datameet] Urgent Request: Shapefile for Bhuj City

2024-03-15 Thread 'Sunil Kumar' via datameet
Dear Team,

I'm working on a project that urgently requires a shapefile for Bhuj City
in Gujarat, India. Would anyone happen to have this data readily available
and be willing to share it?

Ideally, I'm looking for a shapefile that includes the following layers:

   - City boundaries
   - Major roads and transportation networks
   - Water Bodies

Any file format compatible with common GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards, Sunil Kumar

Re: [datameet] CSVs of Electoral Bonds data

2024-03-15 Thread Akshay Kumar
Data before April 2019 is not there. So some of the encashment details
would be for the bonds which were purchased in last week of March 2019.

Re: [datameet] CSVs of Electoral Bonds data

2024-03-15 Thread rigved1...@gmail.com
Yes.
Even in this data, there are more encashments than disbursal.
As we can see, SBI paid out ~613Cr more than it got paid. (5% mismatch.)
Some data is definitely missing.
