I can write e-mail and it gets sent to the UUCP job queue. Later, when the systems connect, the jobs are processed and rmail is run in the remote host. Everything is fine except that rmail (sendmail?) queues the new messages. Of course, Sendmail processes later the mail queue when it is time (-qxxm parameter when sendmail is started where xx is the number of minutes) and mail gets delivered. What I want to know is if there is a way mail can be sent right away without queuing it after the remote job (rmail) is done. Thanks in advance for any suggestion you UUCP/Sendmail gurus. If you're using UUCP to transport your mail then is it necessary to run sendmail in queue-mode? Re: ack! x has been hosed
For the fonts, you need at least xfntbase, and xfnt75 is probably necessary, too. For the video modes, I think there is no problem. Xfree 3.3 seems to give much more choice than before. look at your /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Some modes are for low-end hardware, others for 21 (or 25) or bigger monitors with fast graphic cards... Great. You should have at least this mode working : # 800x600 @ 60 Hz, 37.8 kHz hsync Modeline 800x600 40 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vs ync This worked with my old 14 (max 37.9kHz !). So I guess you misspelled the Monitor specs. Install more fonts. Obviously some are missing. For example I have xfnt75, xfnt100, xfntbase, xfntscaled installed. You have a valid mode at 640x480 so this is not the problem. Be sure to check HorizSync and VertRefresh in section Monitor, though. 'man XF86Config' is your friend, too. Re: xfig cannot handle colors in 16-bit mode
Hello, I recently bought a new VGA card, and switched to 16-bit mode for X11, but I just found out that xfig can't handle colors now. When I try to select a color, xfig prints the message Can't allocate necessary colorcells, can't popup color panel. This is obviously true, since X11 doesn't allocate color cells in 16-bit mode, but it is not necessary. Is there a workaround to tell xfig to use the existing colors, or can I tell X11 to simulate a writeable colormap? I didn't see that a bug report has been filed on this yet. I'd don't use xfig, so no specific answer. If you have enough RAM, try to get X into DirectColor mode. BTW, there are reasons why one would like to use a color map even with 32 bit colors: when we want to change colors without repainting all the image. This is used as well for animations as for color (gamma, etc) corrections. -- Ciccio C. Did you remove the 1.99.7 kernel source tree by hand or is it still lying around somewhere under /usr/src or have you moved it somewhere else? Wrong. I have not done anything by hand relating to kernels. I think the problem arose originally when I first installed Debian. I installed Debian 1.1 after it had just come out. The kernel it provided was 2.0 hot off the press (so it could claim to be the first distribution with the 2.0 kernel). However the source package that went with it was the 1.99.7 one. For some reason I don't think it installed properly back then. I didn't worry about it at the time as I had no need to roll my own kernel and I had other difficulties to worry about. I have upgraded my system a number of times (currently 1.3) and each time the problem with kernel-source-1.99.7 has remained. It's only recently that I've tried to fix the problem and it seems I can't. Only if you don't want to maintain (correct bugs found) the package afterwards, it should be put in non free (there are other cases, but I don't think they apply here). Generally, Debian isn't too keen on non-maintained packages, as they will probably have to be removed in the future (when we use different libs etc), and will only result in user-irritation in the long run. How to become a maintainer: see First of all I WANT to maintain my package. But I don't have so much time to do all the things described in debian-policy. I've made this package and I want to share my work with others. I know that there are many people in Poland which want to use this package (few of them already use it as testers). Second of all my package is not so typical becouse it's made rather as a bunch of other packages which can be found on the Net then my own work. I've just generated all needed files from instalation scripts in those packages and put it in right places so teTeX can use it (naturally my work was to choose dirs, to choose files needed and to write small debian installation script which configures teTeX to use my package but that's all). Becouse in tetex-pl (so it's called by me) there are 3 packages with non-GPL licencies and the main difference is that authors want to distribute the whole package with sources and not only separate files from it I had to put whole packages in tetex-pl. Now I know that it can by freely distributed (in sesn of GPL). But in fact there is no tetex-pl-source package at all (all sources and original docs are in tetex-pl) so as I understand I cannot put it in main distribution. It can be freely distributed so not in non-free. So I think myself that it should be in contrib directory. So now you have much more information and I wait for good advise for me. Re: fvwm95-2 won't work
Just installed it myself, from what I remember there is no default config file. You have to rename one of the installed config files to what fvwm95-2 is looking for (forgot the name right now). This appears to be right, indeed (I would suggest that the postinst of fvwm95-2 copyies that example system.fvwm2rc95 file, just before the 'update-menus' call). But there is (for the users) an other solution: just install the menu package, and you'll get a system.fvwm2rc95 file that has most of the applications that are installed on your system in it's menu. -- joost witteveen, [EMAIL PROTECTED] #!/usr/bin/perl -sp0777iX+d*lMLa^*lN%0]dsXx++lMlN/dsM0j]dsj $/=unpack('H*',$_);$_=`echo 16dio\U$kSK$/SM$n\EsN0p[lN*1 lK[d2%Sa2/d0$^Ixp|dc`;s/\W//g;$_=pack('H*',/((..)*)$/) #what's this? see http://www.dcs.ex.ac.uk/~aba/rsa/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Are you sure you don't have enough time? You describe you've got beta testers trying you package (and apparently you fix the bugs they report), you are asking us on debian-user, so it seems to me you're an excelent candidate for a new debian package maintainer (only if you already know now that in one year time, you are never going to speak polish, or use debian any more, then you'd be a worce candidate, but that doesn't seem to be the case eigther) I've made this package and I want to share my work with others. Note, btw, that those others probably isn't restricted to polish Debian users: how about russian ones, that want to learn from how you did things? And, come to russian, even I would install tegex-ru (if it ever is released), as my brother lives in Moscow now and it might be fun to write something in russian to him. So, by making the package a true debian package, there may be many more people that indirectly benifit form your work than you realise. Second of all my package is not so typical becouse it's made rather as a bunch of other packages which can be found on the Net then my own work. I maintain about 10 different packages. Only one or two is my own work, the others are stuff found on the net. True, for example my gs package is mostly one package found on the net, but by collecting many different files around the internet, and putting them in the right locations so that polish people can write poslish out of the box, you are just making your package more valuable than just my gs package: If there were no gs package, people could easily download it themselves, and run it. Your package, however, saves many people a much more work. I am not sure I fully understand this: What I understand is: you downloaded package1, package2, and package3. You put the stuff in .../tetex-pl-0.1/package* on your harddisk, you created the files .../tetex-pl-0.1/debian/* to make the three packages combine to one debian package. Now, doing dpkg-buildpackage in the .../tetex-pl-0.1 directory should create the debian source package (tetex-pl_0.1-1.orig.tar.gz) [see footnote 1], the diffs, and the debian package (tetex-pl_0.1-1_i386.deb) etc. Also, package1 (or whatever) contains files that have to be kept together when distributed. But that's actualy what happens, as every Debian CD has got to have the source-code on it (to satisfy GPL (at least an old version of it)). So, I don't think distributing tetex-pl_0.1.orig.tar.gz would make the authors unhappy. So, if the above is correct, then you've got the source package already. As everything can be distributed with diffs (you didn't mention this, but I hope this is the case), it seems to me the stuff _can_ in fackt go in the main distribution. (if not, maybe you can ask the upstream authors of the package*, they probably didn't intend you to be unable to put their stuff in debian). [footnote 1]: maybe your problem is the .diff file, as that doesn't get created automatically. To do that, just (re-)untar package* in .../tetex-pl_0.1.orig/package* and run dpkg-buildpackage. Now the diffs aren't really against the upstream package, but against all upstream pacakges, but this should be OK. (just put a note in /usr/doc/tetex-pl/copyright on how you created the orig package.) So now you have much more information and I wait for good advise for me. Naturally thanks all of you for making such great product as Debian Apparently the main

Debian over NFS
Hello, I am wondering how to set up systems in this way: * A Debian server, with a large hard disk, with a fairly full install of Debian. * Multiple Debian client machines, with small hard disks (often 100 meg or less). I'd like to mount, at minimum, /usr from the Debian server. /usr should be mounted over NFS in read-only mode. My questions are: * How do I go about installing packages on the client? I would assume that I install packages in the normal way on the server, but that wouldn't update the client's /etc directory. However, I do not want to try to install on the client since it would fail if it tries to write anything in /usr. * How do I remove packages? Again, if I remove from the server, there may still be files left in the client's /etc and /var directories. * What is the suggested method for going about this? I'm not sure about this, but (off the top of my hat): AFAIK it should work just fine. The 1.3 base packages (which is what you've got from base1_3.tgz) are independent of any other packages. Maybe you'll have some minor compatibility problems with optionals from 1.2, but I don't even think that's very likely. If this does appear to be the case with a package from 1.2, just update to the version in 1.3. Dselect could be a bit confusing to use, but you can trust it will not downgrade the base packages to their 1.2 versions. I need to have a clean devlp. environment, need that the libs be uptodate, I believe that I can live with the X environment of the 1.2 distrib. That's the situation, a specific list of 1.3 files essential from /net /libs /dev Hmmm, if you want to do some development, you'll want to have at least libc5-dev from devel/. It must be the same version as libc5 from base/, so you'll have to at least download that package. Also, notice that 1.3 has shadow support and the installation suggests it as default. This might break some packages in 1.2 that do not support shadow-passwords (xdm in xbase might be a candidate.) If you notice any problems with logging in and permissions, try 'shadowconfig off' or get packages from 1.3 (alas, xbase from 1.3.0 has a little configuration flaw related to xdm, but it is quite easily fixable. It should be working by default in 1.3.1's xbase.) Cheers, Joost -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Re: Firewalls
One wants a firewall to 1. not require logging into the firewall computer itself (TIS requires this) 2. not require putting new (1 line changed then recompiled) ftp, telnet, ... on the computers behind the firewall (SOCKS4 may require this, I forget) The first causes the user a lot of work, the second causes the administrator a lot of work. I understand any reasonable commercial firewall does both 1 and 2. TIS informed me personally that 1. is inherent in their software, but they sell gauntlet without this problem. Of course, neither you nor I wants to pay for a firewall. I'm unsure what the new SOCKS (SOCKS5 I believe) does, but it has many improvements. I have also seen alpha level firewalls, one being developed by, I believe, a group of banks in Switzerland. These firewall approaches provide more secure proxy servers. The kernel itself provides IP-filtering approaches if compiled with firewall. You tell the kernel which addresses to allow and which to deny. There was a nice command that does this (I forget its name). Hopefully enough people want a proxy firewall that the free community will develop one that is not burdensome. __ Reply Separator _ Subject: Firewalls Author: debian-user@lists.debian.org at INTERNET Date:6/13/97 3:51 PM Anyone running a debian-based firewall out there? After Install: crc error
I install Debian 1.3 on a now clean partition from 7 diskettes. The last install went smoothly and I created a boot floppy. Very early in the following boot, I get the messages loading linux ... uncompressing Linux ... [there was nothing like Done] crc error --system halted To resolve the problem, I created a second set of install disks at another site, but I got the same error. The computer I install on has an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card and I install to /dev/sda9, a SCSI disk. I also have an Atapi CD, which during installation F4 showed repeated errors, though I did not install from CD -- I supposed that the installation occasionally looked at other devices without need. The Debian installation I had used since November, 1996, works well with this Atapi CD [the CD is probably irrelevant to the installation]. I thought I could scheme around the problem with chroot. With the rescue disk, I could not chroot /target, nor could I change root with the chroot of the Debian installation and the rescue disk running (I believe I got a segmentation fault, though using yard rescue disks I got an unrecognized variable which was probably a library problem). My solution: I will install with my November, 1996, Debian 1.2 disks. They worked fine for 15 other Debian installs I had done. Then I will convert over to Debian 1.3, following upgrade instructions. Unrelated comment: Evidently, the Debian installation will not recognize a SCSI swap partition on the first partition /dev/sda1. My previous Debian installation used this as a swap partition and the installation showed it still so defined, but the step Initialize and Activate the Swap Disk Partition detected no swap partition. I later added the swap partition /dev/sda5 (a logical rather than a primary partition) which the Debian install did detect. Any help for this Linux newbie highly appreciated !! :) Thanks a lot, --Erwin There are several possibilities for your problem: 1. Is the floppy write protected? 2. It is possible that although you can read with the drive that it is broken for write. 3. Did you try cleaning the drive? As you have a DOS partition to boot from, I can suggest an alternative to a boot floppy that I think you will be much happier with in the long run. You need the program loadlin.exe (available from the tools directory of a Debian archive, and with the 1997-06-06 disk set) and the kernel image named linux on the rescue disk. Copy them both to a subdirectory on the DOS partition, boot the dos partition, and cd to that subdirectory. You can now type: loadlin linux root=/dev/hda2 rw and your new system will boot up. You can incorporate this functionality into the menu system available in config.sys and execute the above command in the proper section of autoexec.bat so that either the DOS and the Linux systems can be chosen at boot time. Re: Can't deinstall package
Hi, I just read about this. I think that the best thing to do at the moment is to remove mention of the package from /var/lib/dpkg/status. Look at the files mentioned in /var/lib/dpkg/kernel-source-1.99.7.list, and make sure that they are gone. Also remove /usr/src/linux; if you are going to use kernel-source packages it is a good idea to let /usr/src/linux be a symbolic link managed by the kernel-source packages (unpack your copies of unpstream sources in some other directory, I either use /tmp/linux or /usr/src/linux-2.0.30). kernel source packages unpack into /usr/src/kernel-source-X.XX and change the symbolic link to point at the latest kernel source (allowing for multiple source trees). If you have multiple sources installed, it does the right thing if you dpkg --remove new source packages, making sure that .usr.src.linux always points to a valid directory (until you remove the last source tree, that is). I'm sorry for the trouble you have experienced. manoj -- ... cost consciousness and sophisticated design are basically incompatible. Richard F. How to deliver mail over the modem
I'll try this again, i have as yet been unable to post to this list. I have smail delivering local mail, i have fetchmail getting mail from my pop account. How do i get outgoing mail to be delivered when i dial up? what is the best program to use? Do i have to change anything in pines config? As well what works best to sort mail? Is there also something that will rip stuff off the subject line? I subscribe to a list that has [header:10293] attached to every message so that messages don't get threaded. Re: Are spammers subscibing to the lists?
Seriously, though: Is there a way (with procmail or other) that I can automatically forward all email with non-existant Reply-To: addresses to /dev/null? That would probably halve the amount of spam I get. You can do two things: From Abuse.net, get all the known addresses of spammers and set them in a filter. Also, you can have your mail server do an automatic check of the domain it's receiving mail from. If the mail is from [EMAIL PROTECTED] and your mail server program detects that the domain name BOY.COM doesn't exist, it can drop the mail. The unfortunate part about this is that the error would bounce to either someone else (to bad not back to the spammer) and that people who use fake domains that actually exists (I get tons from Compuserve and AOL) will still come through. My 10-user ISP works this way, and I get no spams there at all, although I am not sure how the system works (that's how it was explained to me). I have just installed Linux myself and although I am slowly converting myself to Linux from Windows 95, I have a lot to learn. I'm used at having my bed made. It crashes once in a while, but it's always made =) Perhaps the best way to get rid of spammers is to become filthy rich, so when we receive their mail, we can do a WHOIS on the website they advertise, and then send our boys to take care of them... just a dream. True, Spamming is part of the freedom and the Internet is an anarchy, with no control, but I still feel that if Spam should not stopped because we'd be interfeering with their freedom, they are interfeering my freedom (and my wallet). They should also let their accounts know that logs are kept and all posts and messages are traceable to the account. The people who hide behind anonymous remailers and such can be dealt with if most ISP's block all messages and traffic from those IP numbers. I can help you with this last one. The base system doesn't create the device tty0 with the resulting above error message. Cd to /dev and run: ./MAKEDEV tty0 this helped; it also got rid of the startup messages about serial ports . . . And try again. Once the package have been installed, you can create a new configuration file by deleting the old one in /etc/X11 and then running xbase-configure. You will need xfntbase and xfnt75 installed for this to work. If you have room I highly recommend installing all of the xfnt packages, as many programs use fonts without declaring any dependence and they will fail with font errors. I now have *absolutely* no idea why this is working. What I found from diddling is: with XF86Setup, and the SVGA server, i could get into x--at 320x200 (240?). with xf86config, i couldn't get a working setup sor the S3; generally the fixed font error. switch /etc/X11/Xserver didn't help, either; still errors from the SVGA setup with the server switched. then i installed xserver-s3v --i have no idea what the relation between this and s3 is --and got an unrecognized chip errror. so i purged that, and set Xserver back to svga. voila. X at 640x480, but the virtual screen isn't any larger. for that matter, i can't even tell how many bpp this is. if it's 24, that would explain things . . . so: 1) how do i tell it what mode i'm in? 2) how do i set the default to 8? 3) for that matter, will the s3 chips do 1280x1024 under the vga16 server? All I need (care) about color for is the code hi-liting in emacs. 4) how do i figure out settings for XF86config for screen settings/sizes? I'd like 640x480,1024x728, and 800x600 on 8 bit, 640x480800x600 on 16, and 640x480 on 24 . or 640x400 on 32 if it forces me to 32. 5) do i need to sacrifice undergraduates to keep this working? and if so, to the screen, the software, or the hardware? :) -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: Debian over NFS
* A Debian server, with a large hard disk, with a fairly full install of Debian. * Multiple Debian client machines, with small hard disks (often 100 meg or less). I'd like to mount, at minimum, /usr from the Debian server. /usr should be mounted over NFS in read-only mode. I'm working on a similar set up. this is the first machine, and is supposed to become the server--though i'd like to keep it and make another one the server. We have mostly 4m 486's with 80 and occasionaly 200 mb drives. We've already figured to cannibalize them about 2:1, so we'll have 8m/80+ machines. What I'm thinking right now is: central server 16M, with 2 or 3 200 mb drives. Things will install onto this machine. It will export /usr by nfs the rest: 8/80 or so. These will get a minimal installation. the base installation, X, probably lyx (these are for grad students); maybe a couple of others commonly used. These will mount the server as /usr2, and usr2/bin, etc., will appear in the local paths. Also, I'm figuring to put /home on the server, so that files can be accessed from any machine. What I still need to figure out is how to have the password file downloaded regularly from the master to the little ones, and hwo to have password changes sent to it rather than the local machines. rick -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
