This is an official Debian repository, which includes mplayer2 but not
mplayer...

...but this is not one of the Debian repos. It's an independent
repository, maintained by a third party; it is not officially part of
Debian. This is stated explicitly at
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia and

If you have problems with a package obtained from there, you probably
need to contact the person who maintains that site and builds its
packages. If you're lucky, you might find someone here who also uses

I don't expect it to be easy to change the terminal encoding. There is 
really no reason to do it. UTF-8 is so ubiquitous…

I expect both the python engine and the curse library to read UTF-8 files 
just fine and do it even better than CP437 if UTF-8 is the system encoding. 
If they don't, they are probably not correctly configured or compiled. You 
should be able to write and test your script using UTF-8.

If you really need to write your script using CP437, there are a number of 
text editors that can read and write files using whatever encoding you 
want. Vim and kwrite can both do it. There is no need to change the 
terminal encoding just to write a script with CP437.

If you need to send the script to someone that specifically requested 
CP437 encoded files, you should write and test the script using UTF-8 
(taking care of only using characters available in CP437) and then, when 
you are ready to give it away, convert it using iconv:

iconv -f utf8 -t cp437 source -o source_in_cp437

Note that there are a number of text editors on Windows that can read 
UTF-8 files if that's your concern.

Similarly, if your python script must produce CP437 output, you can convert 
the output on the fly using iconv

   python script | iconv -f utf8 -t cp437 | other_command

That's admittedly not very convenient. So, does the python encode 
command (http://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/string_encode.htm) help 
you?

Cela d'autant plus qu'en vérifiant le .bash_history de root, je sais que le
serveur ntp a été démarré pendant la période août 2014 et aujourd'hui ce qui
signifie que la période de 2^22 secondes ne vient pas du serveur NTP mais du
noyau et de la machine.

Cette période de 2^22 et le délai de 86,06s disent ils quelque chose à
quelqu'un?

No te puedo decir nada del instalador de Ubuntu Studio porque no lo

usuario elegir configuraciones avanzadas en el instalador, te tocará 
buscar un manual de Ubuntu Studio para ver cómo acceder a esa opción.

 Pues no exactamente. El disco está en GPT, basta arrancar el live Cd y

El instalador (al menos el de Debian) hace eso él solito, no tienes que 
hacer ningún paso antes de instalar, ni ejecutar gparted ni dar formato a

De hecho, parece que algunos medios de instalación (netiso) tienen la 
opción de iniciar el instalador con UEFI, directamente.

 Donde vi cuales habían sido mis errores en mis intentos fallidos
 anteriores:
 
 1. El mensaje de advertencia me indicaba que la partición EFI debería
 ser de al menos 35 MB y yo la hice de 100 MB que al final fueron 104 MB

Parece un poco contradictorio ya que 100 MiB  35 MiB.

 2. No había marcado con boot dicha partición y 

Unas de las ventajas de instalar siempre en modo experto es que asimilias 
todo eso y cuando tienes que instalar nuevamente ya sabes lo que tienes 
que hacer instintivamente.

 3. En uno de los intentos no le di formato en FAT32

Mira en la configuración del USB en el panel de VirtualBox (¿tienes

Se me ocurre que además de lo que te ha comentado Jhosue del usuario 
vboxusers podría tratarse de un problema de permisos, así que prueba 
iniciando virtualbox desde tu usuario root a ver si sigue sin ver el fax.

Il est préférable de mailer à la ML et non en mode perso,
comme les deux derniers, afin que tout le monde profite

Il faut aussi répandre la nouvelle que VLC = opensource (plugin fonctionnel),
et Flasplayer = proprio (Adobe) incapable de résoudre les failles
de son plugin...
 tu as bien raison, insistons sur ce fait, et également sur la qualité 
 de lecture que tu remarques dans le 2eme paragraphe de ce post !

 ne sort pas et l'imprimante reste en fonction impression pendant des 
 heures
 donc inutilisable
 
 2) installation des pilotes ip100
 impression = feuilles blanches ???
 il me manque une lib que j'arrive à trouver sur les dépôts de 
 magéia 1
 libtiff3 que j'installe
  aucun changement
 
 3) désinstallation de tout le toutim
 
 4) install des pilotes deb converti en rpm avec alien (j'ai déjà fait 
 l'expérience que parfois ça marche mieux, car les rpm sont souvent 
 fait pour fédora)
 
 ce coup ci c'est libtiff4 qui me manque, impossible à trouver on 
 est passé de 3 à 5 sous magéia 
 nouvelle réinstalle et maintenant j'ai plus rien, demande d'imprimer 
 un document et rien ne se passe, même pas de trace dans la file 
 d'attente
 
 le ccm me dit qu'il me manque aussi /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij 
 pour qe l'imprimante fonctionne ???

I find that a bizarre attitude.

The point of having a user-settable PATH is to monkey with it on 
demand. If we didn't want that, it would be inherited from the
system default and be immutable.

Should users add /usr/sbin and /sbin to their PATHs when they
find themselves in need of using those tools often? Sure. Is it
common enough to make it the default for new users? No.

 que me llevó a esto:

 Donde vi cuales habían sido mis errores en mis intentos fallidos
 anteriores:

 1. El mensaje de advertencia me indicaba que la partición EFI debería
 ser de al menos 35 MB y yo la hice de 100 MB que al final fueron 104
 MB
 2. No había marcado con boot dicha partición y
 3. En uno de los intentos no le di formato en FAT32

 Después de leer cómo hacerlo bien, hice una partición en FAT32 de 209
 MB ya que los 35 MB eran muy pocos, incluso los 104 MB de antes, la
 etiqueté como EFI y lo más importante es que quedó marcada con boot
 que al instalar el sistema, fue reconocida inmediatamente como EFI,
 instalé y todo bien como en los intentos anteriores con la  gran
 diferencia de que al reiniciar ya pude entrar al sistema y dejaron de
 aparecer mensajes de error tan molestos.

 Gracias a todos por su tiempo, sus recomendaciones y la paciencia.

Creo que hoy en día el problema radica en el hardware, que sigue siendo

Bonjour,

ci-dessous un appel au secours d'un ami (que j'ai mis en copie) qui a 
installé Magéia 5 sur l'ordinateur d'une débutante en GNU/Linux. Il 
n'arrive pas à faire fonctionner l'imprimante d'où mon idée de 
m'adresser à vous.

Les liens sur Ubuntu sont sans grad intérêt à mon avis. Je ne peux pas 
m'en occuper moi-même puisque l'ami en question habite loin de chez 
moi.

Est-ce que qn a réussi à faire fonctionner cette imprimante sous 
Debian ? Si jamais elle fonctionne sous Debian, il doit aussi y avoir 
moyen de la faire marcher sous Magéia. (ou alors il faut passer sous 
Debian...)

suite à l'installe magéia sur le portable en uefi, j'ai maintenant un 
gros soucis avec l'imprimante.
imprimante canon pixma ip100.
j'ai téléchargé les pilotes ici

et ça fait 48h00 que je m'arrache les cheveux 

1) j'installe l'imprimante avant téléchargement des pilotes
proposition de cups du pilote pour ip 50
installation, impression page de test, couleur décalé mais pas 
trop grave
impression d'un document  s'imprime normalement mais la feuille 
ne sort pas et l'imprimante reste en fonction impression pendant des 
heures
donc inutilisable

2) installation des pilotes ip100
impression = feuilles blanches ???
il me manque une lib que j'arrive à trouver sur les dépôts de 
magéia 1
libtiff3 que j'installe
 aucun changement

3) désinstallation de tout le toutim

4) install des pilotes deb converti en rpm avec alien (j'ai déjà fait 
l'expérience que parfois ça marche mieux, car les rpm sont souvent 
fait pour fédora)

ce coup ci c'est libtiff4 qui me manque, impossible à trouver on 
est passé de 3 à 5 sous magéia 
nouvelle réinstalle et maintenant j'ai plus rien, demande d'imprimer 
un document et rien ne se passe, même pas de trace dans la file 
d'attente

le ccm me dit qu'il me manque aussi /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij 
pour qe l'imprimante fonctionne ???
  une recherche sur GG mais je trouve pas grand chose

Tu mélanges tout. Le mode d'amorçage UEFI|BIOS et le format de table de

MSDOS ou en BIOS sur GPT.

L'erreur se trouve sans doute dans le fichier xml que tu essaies de lire 
avec Iceweasel. C'est donc lui qu'il faut corriger. Il faudrait voir le 
fichier entier pour le déboguer.

 ifconfig resides in sbin, which is in root's but not the ordinary

While suggestions of running it as root will work, it strikes me as a
bad habit to get into (running things as root that don't have to be).
Using the full path will work without running the command as root, so it
seems like a better solution to me.

Changing the terminal character set

I'm writing python scripts with the curses GUI and I need the CP437
character set.

How can I change the character encoding in the XFCE terminal [v0.4.8] from
UTF-8 to CP437 or IBM437?

Alternatively, I did attempt to change the system locale from en_GB.UTF-8
to one that contained CP437/IBM437. However, no CP437 character sets
appeared as an option in 'dpkg-configure locales' command [although 'IBM437
does appear as an available character set in 'locales -m'.]

Changing the system locale from UTF-8 probably isn't a good idea anyway, so
it would be ideal if the character set changed was confined to the XFCE
terminal for the purposes of the curses python script.

 pas du serveur NTP mais du noyau et de la machine.
 
 Cette période de 2^22 et le délai de 86,06s disent ils quelque chose à

No se trata de claridad sino de precisión. Para resolver un problema y 
que el resto de listeros te ayudemos con ello tienes que aportar datos 
precisos, nada de batacasos.

 1. Puedo hacer ping a todas las tarjetas de red 

Perfecto, pero lo que interesa es que hagas un ping _desde_ un cliente de 
la red _hacia_ ese servidor.

Claro... y déjame adivinar... ¿verdad que un problema es un batacaso?

Me parece que si sigues por ese camino vas a tener que seguir 
reinstalando el sistema cada dos por tres :-)

 4. Lo que sucede es que si me falla el Shorewall que cuando lo
 reinicio no me da ningún problema los usuarios de la Lan no pueden
 navegar y por ende el correo tampoco.

Shorewall no puede funcionar si la tarjeta de red está saturada o tiene 
algún problema que le impida gestionar el tráfico que recibe/envía.

Reinicia el servicio de red (service networking restart) para ver si la 
situación vuelve a la normalidad. También puedes revisar los registros 
(dmesg | grep -i eth) y mandar a la lista la salida de ifconfig -a.

 Lo cierto es que los usuarios dejan de navegar y tambien el correo deja
 de funcionar.

Lógico si el equipo gestiona esos servicios (salida a Internet y correo 
electrónico) tiene algún problema con la red.

It is specific to IPv6 addresses. When an interface gets IPv6 addresses
assigned by stateless address autoconfiguration (SLAAC) from router
advertisements (RA), such addresses have limited lifetimes. The initial
values are set from values contained in the RA.

The valid lifetime is the length of time in seconds the address remains
valid.

Th preferred lifetime is the length of time in seconds the address
remains preferred, i.e. used for new communications.

Both lifetimes are refreshed when receiving a new RA.

Te puedo confirmar lo de los escritorios virtuales. Allá por 1997 usaba
FVWM, que manejaba escritorios virtuales, tamaño virtual del escritorio
(podías definir un escritorio mayor que tu pantalla. Este se desplazaba
cuando se acercabas a los bordes, algo similar a la herramienta de
accesibilidad lupa) y otras funcionalidades hoy nada frecuentes.

Il y a un avantage dans le partitionnemen UEFI/GPT,
pas de limites de partitions principales.

Good idea, but I can answer the easiest question first. The name
that originally setup this account is based on my wife's user
ID. I first tried mar...@suddenlink.net and the system let me
type it in then ate it a few seconds later and popped up a
message saying that this user ID is unavailable. It did that
same thing to attempts to register a couple of other UID's
before liking martin.m. Those credentials work without fail when
retrieving messages via fetchmail and one must use the same
credentials with the smtp host as one does to retrieve mail.

Just the same, you caught me on one thing. the full user name is
the full email address and I was just using martin.m. Fixing it
changed nothing.
The following is a partial quote from Suddenlink's instructions
to pop and smtp users. This is the part that applies to what
doesn't yet work:


   SMTP (outbound)

 Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.suddenlink.net
 Outgoing mail port: 25 or 587
 Outgoing mail port (SSL): 465

   Note:Username: your full email address, including the @domain.net at
   the end (i.e. @suddenlink.net)

   Password: The password set to your particular email address
   Outgoing server verification must be enabled and on.  If your email
   client has the option or checkbox that says My outgoing server
   requires authentication this will need to be checked along with use
   same settings as my incoming mail server.


   If the email client asks for Clear Text Authentication, check yes.



It looks like you log in in the clear and then encryption is
used to send the mail.

If you start using port 465 or anything but 25 or 587,
it just hangs until the next big bang or I get bored waiting.

Aucun. Selon le mode d'amorçage l'installateur Debian choisit
automatiquement d'installer GRUB en version BIOS (grub-pc) ou EFI 32 ou
64 bits (grub-efi-amd64 ou grub-efi-ia32) et celui-ci s'occupe
d'installer le chargeur d'amorçage comme il faut quel que soit le format
de table de partition.

Seule précaution à prendre lors du partitionnement : créer une partition
système EFI si boot EFI, ou une partition BIOS boot (bios_grub) si boot
BIOS sur GPT.

Il y a juste quelques BIOS buggés qui ont de petites exigences
injustifiées concernant le contenu du MBR comme le flag boot actif sur
une partition, mais ce n'est pas spécifique au format GPT.

Unforch, xdpyinfo reports on the screen in use, so when I am logged into 
that machine with an ssh -Y session, I get the output from display 10:0, 
this one.  Lesson learned?  Go check on that machine.

The Xorg.0.log does say its using the open source intel i915 driver.

So I go out to it, xdpyinfo says its running 1024x768, but 
settings/display shows a laptop defaulted at that, and also shows the 
AOC monitor, giving a top resolution of 13##x768.  So I select it, 
screen goes blank for about a second, and come back EXACTLY filling the 
screen.  The last time I tried that, linuxcnc was running so I could see 
the effect on a circle, and it set the display area nominally 2 wider 
than the screen, and the circle wasn't fixed.

This time it wasn't running, so I click keep, then ran linuxcnc and 
loaded the circle.  Perfect!  Nother lesson learned.  You cannot 
completely reconfigure the screen when an application is using it, even 
if no motion is taking place and the image is static.  Its still being 
redrawn altho I have no clue why.  Or a lock is held.  Which, 
damnedifiknow.

Probably pure serendipity, but thank you Nicholes for making me go play 
some more.  If it holds on a reboot, I will be a very happy camper. ;-)

seem to be any way to do that, so workarounds like this are about the
best that can be done.

(Aside from possibly filing a feature request against coreutils
upstream, anyway. But the odds of that going anywhere soon seem slim.)

Tu mélanges tout. Le mode d'amorçage UEFI|BIOS et le format de table de
partition GPT|MSDOS sont deux choses indépendantes, en tout cas pour

I am glad you managed to solve you problem, but forget that lesson, because
it is wrong. Unless the application is doing something very strange with the
X11 server (very unlikely), or simply is a game that puts itself in
fullscreen at a different resolution (you would have noticed it, and you
would not have been able to change the resolution without leaving it), you
definitely can reconfigure the screen at any time.

Most likely, it did not take because of some other reason that you did not
notice at the time. That is the problem with control centers and other
high-level tools: when they fail, you do not know why.

If you want a lesson, here is one: if you have a problem, always use
low-level tools to understand it and find a fix. Only then can you consider
porting the fix to high-level tools.

The low-level tool to control the screens' resolutions is xrandr. In
hindsight, I should have recommended it instead of xdpyinfo: the output is
more complete and more readable, and to get the current resolution it would
have worked even if the driver was not correct.

It's saying that the valid and preferred remaining LiFeTimes for that 
address assignment are forever, probably because they have been 
statically assigned. Compare this to a DHCP-assigned address record, 
which might say something like:


inet 192.168.0.2/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global dynamic eth0
   valid_lft 86291sec preferred_lft 86291sec

It would be entirely reasonable to file a bug against the man page 
ip-address(8) for not explaining the output more clearly. (That man page 
has some other issues anyway, like not having had its header and footer 
changed properly when it was clone-and-hacked from ip-route(8).)

Yo creo que la secuencia es:

Apple/OS → Linux/GNOME → Windows

Por mi parte, cada vez me alejo más del paradigma actual de entorno

Pues no me parece que sea falso, ya en otras ocasiones anteriores
había visto notas acerca de las nuevas monerías del ventanuco para su
versión 10 que quieren lanzar este verano exactamente a 20 años del
lanzamiento del Windows 95 y otras viarias cosas. No había revisado

familiares por gnu/linux. Lo que pensé al ver por ejemplo lo de los
múltiples escritorios fue: Por fin se podrá usar como un sistema
operativo decente.

Y es que una de las cosa que mas me frustran cuando tengo que usar
Windows es la falta de escritorios, me siento muy limitado a
diferencia de linux o mac. Mi impresión fue que cedían en su necedad
tras 15 o 10 años de que ciertas características han estado
disponibles en otros sistemas. Pero no me pasó por la cabeza
indignarme y acusarlos de copiarlo o algo así. Más interesante me
pareció su idea de permitir actualizarse a todos los usuarios que usen
Windows 7 u 8 sin importar si su licencia es original o pirata. Una
estrategia que busca ganar adeptos sobre todo en China pero que parece
ser, implementaran en todo el mundo mundial, y que creo va en un
sentido similar al de Apple que ya no está vendiendo su SO sino
permite actualizarlo gratuitamente para los que tengan previamente ya
un equipo de Apple. Tal vez ambas sean reacciones a un mercado donde
los usuarios están encontrando que ni Windows ni Mac OSX son lo único
que existe y que hay otras opciones variadas, flexibles y casi siempre
gratuitas del lado de gnu/linux. Que la gente, aún no de manera
masiva, está hallando otras opciones y no tienen que restringirse a
los designios, caprichos e imposiciones de esas dos empresas y que tal
vez, en este escenario actual al que hay que añadir la piratería les
convenga ajustar el rumbo con una estrategia diferente.

Otro detalle interesante fue todo el debate que se generó por el
keylogger de Windows 10 Technical Preview que se denunció en redes
desde octubre del año pasado y ha sido exagerado por unos, desmentido
por otros pero que creo pone en la mira el asunto de la privacidad y
seguridad en tiempos donde esto no puede ser considerado ya un asunto
menor. Siento que el quid de la cuestión es que Windows 10 sigue
siendo software privativo, por tanto es muy difícil sino imposible
auditarlo y tener certeza de que no incluye un keylogger o algún otro
tipo de software (¿malware?) para espiar a sus usuarios. Y en el
supuesto caso de que el keylogger reportado haya sido incluido como
afirma Microsuave sólo para acelerar la retroalimentación y acortar el
ciclo de desarrollo de su software y que no harán uso indebido de esa
información recolectada y que tampoco estará en la versión final, ¿se
puede creer o confiar en la palabra de Microsoft? Después de lo de
Prism difícilmente diría yo.

Pero ya me estoy desviando del tema original y parece ser que se
aproxima el lanzamiento de windows 10 con todo y sus novedades no tan
nuevas de este lado, y pues a ver que tal.

 Te puedo confirmar lo de los escritorios virtuales. Allá por 1997 usaba
 FVWM, que manejaba escritorios virtuales, tamaño virtual del escritorio
 (podías definir un escritorio mayor que tu pantalla. Este se desplazaba
 cuando se acercabas a los bordes, algo similar a la herramienta de
 accesibilidad lupa) y otras funcionalidades hoy nada frecuentes.

I don't expect it to be easy to change the terminal encoding. There is

just fine and do it even better than CP437 if UTF-8 is the system encoding.
If they don't, they are probably not correctly configured or compiled. You

If you really need to write your script using CP437, there are a number of
text editors that can read and write files using whatever encoding you
want. Vim and kwrite can both do it. There is no need to change the
terminal encoding just to write a script with CP437.

If you need to send the script to someone that specifically requested CP437
encoded files, you should write and test the script using UTF-8 (taking
care of only using characters available in CP437) and then, when you are
ready to give it away, convert it using iconv:

iconv -f utf8 -t cp437 source -o source_in_cp437

Note that there are a number of text editors on Windows that can read UTF-8
files if that's your concern.

Similarly, if your python script must produce CP437 output, you can convert
the output on the fly using iconv

python script | iconv -f utf8 -t cp437 | other_command

That's admittedly not very convenient. So, does the python encode command
(http://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/string_encode.htm) help you?

Problem solved. The following lines of code are required for Python 2.7
without the need to change any terminal locale settings:

instalar al final.

No te puedo decir nada del instalador de Ubuntu Studio porque no lo
conozco, pero la idea sigue siendo la misma. LA mayoría de las
distribuciones linuxeras tienen un modo avanzado o experto que permite al
usuario elegir configuraciones avanzadas en el instalador, te tocará
buscar un manual de Ubuntu Studio para ver cómo acceder a esa opción.

Quise decir que en el BIOS o UEFI no había tal modo experto. En cuanto
a los instaladores de ubuntu pues son muy visuales y opté por el OEM
que es diferente a los de Debian que he usado que son más como a la
antigua con puros menús y texto.

Pues no exactamente. El disco está en GPT, basta arrancar el live Cd y
entrar y con gparted se puede hacer todo lo que haga falta, pero hay que
saber hacerlo y ese era el detalle crítico.

El instalador (al menos el de Debian) hace eso él solito, no tienes que
hacer ningún paso antes de instalar, ni ejecutar gparted ni dar formato a
las particiones... nada.

Lo sé, pero tengo la costumbre de usar gparted para ajustar
manualmente las particiones en el disco, solo 1 vez usé el modo por
defecto en automático y no quedó como quería.

Probé con varias el problema es que, como ya comenté n veces en este
hilo, Windows to go estaba activado y no había opción en el menú del
BIOS ni con UEFI activado ni sin él que me dejara deshabilitarlo,
razón por la cual abrí este hilo hace unas semanas. Afortunadamente el
truco de la pila bastó para que si bien no desapareciera del menú, ya
no estuviera activo.

De hecho, parece que algunos medios de instalación (netiso) tienen la
opción de iniciar el instalador con UEFI, directamente.

Donde vi cuales habían sido mis errores en mis intentos fallidos
anteriores:

1. El mensaje de advertencia me indicaba que la partición EFI debería
ser de al menos 35 MB y yo la hice de 100 MB que al final fueron 104 MB

Parece un poco contradictorio ya que 100 MiB 35 MiB.

Así es, pero en la liga que puse lo que aclaran justamente es que el
tamaño mínimo recomendado no es de 35 sino de 100 MB y ahí mismo
recomiendan usar 200 MB para evitar errores.

2. No había marcado con boot dicha partición y

Unas de las ventajas de instalar siempre en modo experto es que asimilias
todo eso y cuando tienes que instalar nuevamente ya sabes lo que tienes
que hacer instintivamente.

Puede ser, lo usaré para la próxima.

3. En uno de los intentos no le di formato en FAT32

Bonsoir,

Ce n'est pas la 1ère fois,
Iceweasel se ferme immédiatement après son ouverture 
après avoir booté Linux, juste une fois et après non.

Dois-je le désinstaller avec -purge puis le réinstaller,
(ce qui me ferait perdre tout mon historique et mes configs),
ou 
y a t-il un autre moyen, tel que vider un sous répertoire
dans mon /home/user/.mozilla ?

(il doit y avoir une cochonnerie dans un sous-répertoire...).

A ma connaissance un purge n'effacera pas ton ~/.mozilla donc pas de crainte à
ce sujet. Pour essayer tu peux déjà renommer ton .mozilla en .mozilla-old pour
voir si ça vient de tes paramètres perso ou non.

Oui, je vais le faire et je verrai demain matin au reboot si iceweasel ne se 
ferme plus inopinément.
Mais si oui, je suis bon pour recréer un nouveau répertoire ~.mozilla,
et je perdrais tout mon historique and co...
Comment savoir quel est le répertoire ou le fichier fautif ?

Le mode opératoire ci-dessus est tuer une mouche avec un canon,
j'aurais préféré une frappe micro chirurgicale de neuro-chirurgien :-)

I may've missed something here. I can't think why computing the
md5/sha-2 digest would ever be better or simpler than cmp, even
if the files are large and/or on the same spindle).

In fact I can't think why you'd ever compute a digest just to
throw it away like this:

  if [ $md5_1 != $md5_2 ]

(with no further usage).

It's obviously beneficial if one of the files is remote and the
digest is being computed by the remote host at a speed greater than
the network could transfer it, but that's not the case with this
simple script, is it.

When I say beneficial, I mean in the case where most of the files
are likely to be identical. Otherwise, I don't see how anything
can be faster than   cmp --quiet   because cmp quits at the first
difference, viz:

$ time cat /usr/src/linux-source-3.16.tar.xz  /dev/null

real0m8.621s
user0m0.004s
sys 0m0.136s
$ time cat /usr/src/linux-source-3.16.tar.xz | cmp --quiet - ~/.bashrc

(both preceded by # echo 3  /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches of course)

I can provoke these errors and more in mpv by removing vo=x11
(or vo=xv, either of these works for me) from ~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf
and IIRC the same was true with mplayer1/2.

I just assumed that mplayer grabbed at straws in attempting to find

 upstream, anyway. But the odds of that going anywhere soon seem slim.)

One way to change the odds.

We have the source. The OP could spend just an hour or two making his
own version of cp and install it in his own /bin, or, if he has ~/bin
first in his $PATH, there, to avoid the possibility of collateral
damage.

because each item is all on one line.

First time use of mmv:

  $ mmv file.~*~ file.#1


However, the next time you try the cp again, it will create a new ~1~ as
it doesn't exist and using mmv won't give the desired result.


So you would need to do:

  $ (cd /destination; mmv file.* file.~#1~)
  $ cp --backup=t file /destination/file
  $ (cd /destination; mmv file.~*~ file.#1)

recycle:maxsize = BYTES
Files that are larger than the number of bytes specified by this
parameter will not be put into the repository.

O /publico/pub/.lixeira será criando quando o primeiro arquivo for
deletado. Mas não custa nada criar manualmente e setar as permissões
apropriadas.
Já quanto a maxsize, não diz se zero e qualquer tamanho, ou seja sem
limite, ou se zero e zero mesmo.
Começaria alterando ou removendo esse parâmetro (zero parece indicar ilimitado).

Outro ponto são os parâmetros que usam listas, os itens são separados
por espaços (não há informação sobre qual o separador a ser usado, não
olhei o fonte).
Teste com a configuração mínima
vfs objects = recycle
recycle:repository = .lixeira
recycle:keeptree = yes

AIUI by the time you send ehlo, any certificate required by the server
will already have been exchanged. However, whereas you might be
concerned that you're sending your emails to the right smarthost, they
should be unconcerned because they're about to force you to
authenticate with them. After all, I might be using any old computer
to run exim/msmtp.

Where you don't authenticate (like my ISP), then they know you're at
the end of a piece of wire that they rent you.

So it's futile for the smarthost to bother to check it.
