The Alpha is powered off the usb, and typically "just works". I agree, I'm using nothing but USB sound devices now. The built-in sound on my laptop sux, so I use USB headphones when I travel with it. I also use them on my desktop, plus a 7.1 sound device, and either works a charm switching between them with pavucontrol. I spent less than $30 each. Happy happy. If it works with a later kernel or ALSA it can either be added to your system, or if testing is preferable it's just a dist-upgrade away. No need to do another installation. No sound - seeking ideas
Hi all: I've newly bought a laptop (details at end) & installed Jessie 8.2. All's well except that I have no sound. I've done quite a lot of online research but got nowhere. I'm looking for ANY other practical ideas, please. What I've done: 1. Checked alsamixer & pavucontrol - I can't find anything muted. alsamixer shows 'Speakers' as muted at the start of each session. Increasing the volume on 'Speakers' (third from left) makes no difference. The only sound I have achieved at all is when (using alsamixer) I raise the levels of 'Mic Boost' high, when I get 'white noise'. This, however, suggests to me that the speakers are functional. I even tried these: 'The Steve Litt Diagnostic Tools' from http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/sound/downloads/ unmute_all.sh just hangs after printing its headphones warning. 2. Checked drivers / kernel modules. These seem to me to be a. correct & b. working. pavumeter shows appropriately fluctuating signal levels when I play a track through aplay or through vlc. 3. Torn my hair / crossed my fingers / lost sleep / read a lot - much of it outdated (I wish people would date online troubleshooting guides etc BEFORE, near the end, it suggests I add (e.g.) etch-backports to sources.list). I've provided all the relevant information I can think of below - of course I'd be happy to provide anything else that would help. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know :) I follow the linux.debian.user usenet group on pan regularly, but do not otherwise receive e-mails. You're welcome to e-mail me with any suggestions. It's just the way it is, so I have found it. Try alsamixer and press F6 and if you have the option of a couple of sound cards try each one. But it may not stick if you reboot. Try pulseaudio, you don't always need to use pavucontrol, that works sometimes but after a reboot it also may fail. Then uninstall it and try again without and that may work. Sometimes your headphone jack works and sometimes it doesn't so you play around with alsamixer and pulseaudio and you can possibly get it working. I haven't been able to recently. It's really, try everything till you hit on the combination that works and depending what audio package you use, you may also have to select the audio function to get the sound to work. VLC has heaps and you just work through them till one works. One will probably work? Or you may plug in a USB stick and get a dialogue up that asks you what you want to do with the sound configuration, various options. All a bit hit and miss. I've never had sound working constantly no matter what brand laptop or sound card is in the machine. If I want to listen to music or speech on a video, always have to fiddle to get it working. Done it for so many years now it has become automagic. Probably not much help. Charlie -- Registered Linux User:- 329524 *** I do not know how to distinguish between our waking life and a dream. Grab a live cd/usb from something that uses a very recent kernel and see if you get sound. If so, you need to either try a more recent kernel, or maybe even run testing. -- Cheers, Sven Arvidsson http://www.whiz.se PGP Key ID 6FAB5CD5 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

I was coming to that conclusion myself, but was hoping upon hope that I had just missed something. It also means, I suppose I have to read up on the vagaries of UEFI & installing/running second distros. Debian was straightforward - it even thought to warn me that it wasn't a good idea to overwrite the EFI partitiion :) Old dogs :( Regards Daud2
