Next time you are infront of the computer, copy paste this information
please from both direct plugged to usb and via hub. Believe you do in the
church, not infront of the computer, when we see the output we can conclude
ourself.

I am not at computer right now, sorry, but I checked dmesg while the phone
was plugged to the hub, and dmesg has shown manufacturer of device, so I
believe device is detected properly, it's just MTP that does not work.

can you get the relevant dmesg when plugged directly and plugged to the hub?

it could be hub is not accepting mtp or phone is reporting different id.

The phone charges, it is just that it does not mount. I can even reach it
with adb and push and pull files

It is about trying to narrow the problem. If it is hub related or software
or something else. without exact information no one will be able to provide
solution
If you can tell the phone not to charge while plugged, this could be
equivalent test.

Basically it is not an option for me, because I need to use this USB hub,
it is an external audio USB Interface that gives rather high quality audio
to me, and it has 3 USB ports. Not interested in any other USB hubs.

Seems like I will connect my phone directly to USB in motherboard.

OK, lets put the question another way around. Have you tried with different
hub?

My experience shows that there are hubs of a better and hubs of a lower
quality. With some hubs something may work with some other may not. I
experienced a similar problem with usb dvbt stick and I don't know what was
the root cause exactly - if power too low or something with the hub.

Yes, Frederic,
My Hub is self-powered, Cable for smartphone looks ok, as long as I use the
same one to connect to PC USB directly and it works. Seems like HUB is
unable to work with MTP device. Also, I cannot try to connect smartphone
with HUB cable becaue they are totally incompatible.

My experience with MTP and a Samsung smartphone is that the usb cable gauge is
critical.

A standard gauge 28 cable is too thin to provide a good power supply to the
phone. The device constantly disconnects until Android gives up claiming that
it could not find a suitable program on the host computer to communicate with.

I tried gauge 24/28 cables. They give a somewhat better result but it is far
from perfect. I suspect the cable is not entirely to blame at this point.

Your hub or its cable could be unable to provide the required power supply to
the smartphone. Is your hub self powered?

Have you tried to connect the smartphone with the hub cable? It may be too
thin for MTP requirements.

The best option I found is to install FX Explorer and upgrade it to the
plus version, which gives me an SMB/FTP/SSH client to directly read my
PCs' filesystems (and direct access to my home fileserver).

It's less of a horror show than having two operating systems trying to
write to the same block device at the same time. Or having to disable
access to the block device from one OS, which can really mess up
applications trying to access it. What happens on your computer if
you are running an application where the binary itself or the data it
needs is on a USB device and you pull the device out? Now imagine
that describing everything you're running.

> I've given up on getting it to work consistently and have installed dropbox

That's essentially what MTP does (only without using an third location
to sync against). Well, probably closer to using FTP to files to/from
the device, only without using TCP/IP. (Oh, just refreshing and
apparently one can run MTP over TCP/IP, though I suspect that
implementations being talked about here are still direct USB
connections.)

Any fancy GUI for navigating file systems should function as well for
an MTP attached device as it would for say, an FTP service.

>From what I've heard, MS had 3rd tier engineers develop MTP, and even
they are a little ashamed of it. But, it's still the primary protocol
out there. So, the idea of MTP is sound, but the particular design,
and the various implementations, well... there is probably room for
improvement. But it's unlikely to happen with anything less than full
industry support.

My experience has been that this whole "MTP" thing, instead of just
mounting phones like they used to, as a storage device, has been a real
horror show, I've given up on getting it to work consistently and have
installed dropbox on my phone and desktop to move stuff back and forth,
which also has its headaches and limitations, but is consistent, and
works.. for a while I was just using an ftp client, ANDFTP, to move
stuff back and forth to a directory on my rented VPS in Germany that I
had sshfs mounted here at home, which also worked, but was a little more
klunky, as they say (bit of a kludge?)
