[Bug 373096] [NEW] [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-07 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since I updated to from hardy to jaunty, the behavior of the screen
brightness on battery power is strange. On unplugging, the overall
brightness goes down (expected), but cannot be brought up to the level
without battery power (unexpected). I can still use the hotkeys to
adjust the brightness, but the intervall is in a lower range than on AC
power. Furthermore, with a period of about one minute, the brightness
goes down even further, bringing it the brightness to a level, where it
is impossible to work, even with the brightness set to maximum. In the
dark periods, the minimum setting seems to turn off the backlight
completely, while maximum is a bit brighter, but still unusable. Then
after about a minute it goes back to the brightness of only some levels
below AC power, but usable, after a minute dark again and so on.

A similar behavior is described in two bugs: For one bug 284550.
However, in contrast to that report, I have the problem only when
running on battery power. Additionally, it says in that bug report that
a fix was released in gnome 2.24.4, but I still have the problem working
in gnome 2.26.1. Bug 325789 describes the same behavior also only on
battery power, but it claims that it doesn't occur any more in jaunty.
Therefore, I decided to file a new bug report.

I am working on a Samsung X20 with intel graphics chipset.

btw.: how do I link other bugs?

[Bug 373096] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-07 Thread Uwe Schilling
Actually, it is not always switching to the cyclic mode. This time,
the screen went black right after unplugging, and I could bring it with
the hotkeys to a level at which it was barely usable in a completely
dark room. However, it did not become brighter by itself this time, as
described above. Here is the output of lshal -m during unplugging, using
the hotkeys to see at least a little bit on the screen and replugging.

[Bug 371533] Re: gnome-session not starting after jaunty upgrrade

2009-05-07 Thread ZioNemo
another bunch of tests.

Right after boot I tried a normal gnome session login.
The session did not start at all (screen went blank and the gdm login screen
reappeared).
psax_after-gnome-session-autologout is the ps -ax after this.
.xsession-errors_gnome-session-autologout is taken at this point.
I started a gnome session in the same way and this time I got an apparently
good screen (panels with applets, icons, ...) but absolutely non-functional
(not even refresh after vt switch); only the mouse pointer was working.
I killed the session with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop.
psax_after-gdm_stop is the ps -ax at this point.
notice a lot of zombies and some strangely duplicated tasks.
I tried to start a gnome session once more (after a sudo /etc/init.d/gdm
start, obviously) and this time I got the Your session... error message.
psax_after-gdm_start_and_login_with_error is the ps -ax at this point.
.xsession-errors is taken at this point.
I then rebooted and used the terminal-login+manual-gnome-session to get to a
somewhat working status and write this.
This status is *not* fully functional and I see in the terminal whwe I started
gnome-session things like:

(firefox:3902): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Could
not open network socket.
** (update-notifier:3837): DEBUG: /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check returned 0
(security: 0)
** (update-notifier:3837): DEBUG: crashreport_check

** (gnome-terminal:4011): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session
manager: Could not open network socket

Completely reinstalling this Laptop is (unfortunately) not an option.
I will try to install KDE and see if that works better (I do not like KDE,
but...).

All this started when I upgraded to Jaunty.
I might have done a ad error doing so.

[Bug 337780] Re: cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system

2009-05-07 Thread Eric Brasseur
The problem is not with the Gnome frequency scaling applet. I used the
cpufreq-selector command and it doesn't change the frequency either. I
managed to get some reaction yet, by switching the ACPI daemon and
related on and off quickly. Then, sometimes, for a few seconds, the
frequency will decrease as was requested. Then it will rise back to
maximum a few seconds later.

I monitored the frequency change with this dumb loop, that shows a time
increase to perform the inner loop:

  while : ; do time { for (( b=0 ; b1 ; b++ )) ; do b=$b ; done } ;
echo $a ; done

Just in case, I removed the Gnome applet... this didn't change anything
to the problem.

By the way, the cpufreq-selector takes seconds to react. And doesn't
change the frequency.

To me this is a major bug:

- My battery autonomy has decreased below what I need to do my job.

- I'm working in libraries. The fan switching on and off to cool the
highclocked CPU is disturbing for me and for people around me. I'm
writing this comment in the local cafeteria because I don't dare go to
the library with this faulty laptop.

- My CPU radiator is accumulating dust.

I'm using a HP dv6000 laptop with Intel processor; dv6415eb to be
precise.

[Bug 373136] [NEW] Terminal crashes when UTF-8 is removed as character encoding

2009-05-07 Thread thoughtbox
Public bug reported:

E.g. when choosing Western ISO-8859-1 and then removing the default
Unicode UTF-8, sometimes GNOME Terminal crashes (bringing with it all
apps that have been started from within the terminal).

This bug also existed in 8.10; I am currently running 9.04.

The bug is not consistent -- usually it happens if the terminal has been
running for a while with UTF-8 and I remember to change to 8859-1 and
then remember that I want to actually remove UTF-8 as a choice (I still
haven't managed :-).

[Bug 373170] [NEW] Easier filter creation

2009-05-07 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Currently to create a filter you have two way:
1. Edit - Message Filters;
2. right-click on a message and select Create Rule From Message - Filter
based on .*

However when you have to create too many filters it is an hard thing to do and
it takes too much time.
A better way to do that may be this:
1. say that you need to create a filter to move certain mails in an another
folder;
2. move the mails to that folder;
3. in the future mails with similar subject, content or headers will be moved
automatically in this folder, like Bogofilter or SpamAssassin do.

[Bug 372189] Re: file-roller waits 25 seconds before opening create archive... dialog

2009-05-07 Thread nicolas cornette
I also have a 25 seconds delay when I'm running file-roller manually
through command line :

$ file-roller --add ./PDF/

there is no disk load during the operation, and the PDF directory is
empty... I don't know what is causing the delay in file-roller because
it doesn't display any message.

I also have this delay with this command (I don't know if it can help) :
$evolution mailto:?attach=file:///home/nic/Bureau/ODRHTCMAGIC.pdf;
running both file-roller evolution directly (without argument) is OK, delay
appears when passing a file . . .

Maybe this bug is not related to file-roller so I'm about to test
more...

[Bug 373202] [NEW] When no photos are displayed, clicking on timeline crashes f-spot

2009-05-07 Thread Martin Schwenke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

In 8.10 (Intrepid), f-spot 0.5.0.3-0ubuntu4 can be made to crash as
follows:

1. Double-click a tag to show only photos with that tag.
2. Select another tag that has no photos in common with the first tag and drag
this tag onto the other tag in the search bar so that only photos with both
tags (i.e. no photos!) are displayed.
3. Click on the timeline.

This seems to reliably crash f-spot.

I'm told that this still happens in 9.04 (Jaunty)

[Bug 337780] Re: cpu frequency scaling monitor does not change frequency in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) alpha 5 on Core 2 system

2009-05-07 Thread Eric Brasseur
Well that was indeed the problem. Once the custom kernel was running,
with the CPU frequency throttling simply and basically turned on, there
was no more problem. The low frequency and power saving governors ran
perfectly.

On the other hand I had no more Wi-Fi. 'Going to try to solve that one
now.

[Bug 373136] Re: Terminal crashes when UTF-8 is removed as character encoding

2009-05-07 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-
file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where
_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 373243] [NEW] The amount of 'Total sent' data wraps around at 4GB

2009-05-07 Thread misiu_mp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

This is related to the closed bug #284423 (the reporting user didnt follow up
the report).

It looks like 'Total sent' (or received) amount of bytes is kept in a 32bit
variable and is wrapped around each ~4GB sent (2^32 bytes).
You will never see total sent larger than 4GB. When the wrap happens you can
see the transfer rate graph go to zero for a moment. Caused probably by using
the wrapped variable in calculating speed (prev = 4GB, new =0 = speed
negative).
Changing the counter to 64bits should be a temporary fix. In the long run some
kind of bignum is needed (or decrease resolution and count the amount of kB
transmitted, or MB, GB).
Leaving it as is makes the counter quite useless especially as you can achieve
gigabit speeds on networks today it deasnt take long to exceed the 4 GB
transmitted data.

This is all speculations as I didn't look at the source, but it seems
quite clear to me.

Happens in all versions of gnome-system-monitor (including the one in
9.04).

[Bug 373250] [NEW] Link to network file creates invalid symlink

2009-05-07 Thread Joril
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 9.04 i386
Nautilus 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2

We have a small intranet with a few Samba shares.. I can browse them
easily with Nautilus, but whenever I try to make a link to a shared file
(to the desktop for example) the resulting symlink is invalid.

ls -l ~/Desktop
shows a symlink such as
shared_file - /shared_file

If I manually create a location launcher by context menu, it works fine
(but then it creates a .desktop file, not a symlink)

[Bug 44989] Re: Doesn't print (large) PDF files

2009-05-07 Thread Till Kamppeter
can you replace your /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops file by the attached
one (do not forget to make the new file executable with chmod 755
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops) and print again. Do your files print all
correctly now, from all applications?

[Bug 373260] [NEW] ~/.Xmodmap does not get loaded

2009-05-07 Thread Akos Ladanyi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

~/.Xmodmap does not get loaded on Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04. The same
.Xmodmap files used to work on Ubuntu 8.10. I guess this is not the same
as Bug #366045 because it appeared in 9.04.

When manually executing 'xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap' the key mappings get loaded
properly.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-05-07 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I have tested the gvfs and nautilus packages in hardy-proposed. Here are the
problems I found (they are essentially the same described some time ago in the
upstream bug report:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485#c57

In virtualbox running ubuntu 8.04.2:

When the machine is not joined to an AD domain (LAB), opening the Network
Servers icon puts me in network:///, showing the Windows Network icon.
Clicking on Windows Network I enter smb:/// but nautilus reports: 0 objects
Inserting manually smb://LAB/ in the location bar I am asked for a password and
after inserting the credentials of a domain user I can access the list of the
machines. Share browsing can be done without problems.

When the machine is joined to an AD domain (LAB) and I login as a local
user the situation is as described above.

When the machine is joined to AD domain (LAB) and I login as a domain
user (with kerberos ticket), opening the Network Servers icon puts me
directly in smb://LAB. Share browsing can be done without problems (but
this was also possible without the patched gvfs).

So, with the proposed packages there are problems in browsing the
Windows Network (smb:///) with machines not joined to an AD domain or in
the absence of kerberos tickets. From the normal user point of view,
this situation is probably worse than before.
